The Power of Art: A Reflection of Soul & Time

Art is one of the most profound and enduring aspects of human culture, transcending time, geography, and individual experience. It reflects our collective and personal identities, tells stories, and explores human emotion. Whether we create, admire, or collect art, we engage with something greater than ourselves—something that enriches our lives, deepens our understanding, and provides a sense of continuity in an everchanging world.

For those who create, art is self-expression and discovery. Through painting, sculpture, photography, music, or other forms, artists give shape to their inner worlds. The creative process fosters critical thinking, resilience, and communication beyond words. Even when difficult, making art is deeply fulfilling and speaks to something universal in the human experience.

Engaging with art is just as meaningful. Art inspires, challenges, and connects us across cultures and histories. A painting, sculpture, or photograph can transport us, evoke wonder, and expand our perspective. Collecting art extends this engagement, transforming spaces into reflections of our values and aspirations. More than acquiring objects, collecting preserves ideas, cultural heritage, and personal stories, ensuring art remains a vital part of our lives.

Ultimately, art adds meaning to our existence. It challenges and inspires us, offering beauty, solace, and insight. Whether creating, admiring, or collecting, art allows us to engage with the essence of humanity in a deeply personal yet universal way.

I feel incredibly grateful that in our family, art has not only been a passion but a way of life. As artists, publishers, and gallerists with over 40 years in the field, we have had the privilege of working closely with creators and collectors, forging connections that transcend the business of art. It is a joy to witness the impact of art and to be part of a world where creativity and expression hold lasting value.

Thank you for inviting me to write this preface for such an inspiring anthology of select modern artists. Your dedication and passion over the past year in curating this collection are evident on every page. It is a testament to the power of art and the profound connections it fosters, and I am honored to be a part of it.

CHARLOTTE SZYNSKIE United States of America

Born in Salida, Colorado, Charlotte Szynskie currently resides in Denver, where her studio serves as a sanctuary for her artistic pursuits. Her early passion for art led her to enroll in every available art class during her middle and high school years. At 17, she completed her first figurative sculpture—a portrait of her father. Despite this early inclination, Charlotte pursued a career in electrical engineering, culminating in a distinguished 33-year tenure, including 28 years as the proprietor of a successful consulting firm. Upon retiring in 2011, she reignited her passion for sculpture, embarking on a transformative journey.

Charlotte undertook a three-year intensive study at the Art Students League of Denver, honing her skills under the mentorship of master sculptors. Her dedication and rapid development in the art form have drawn favorable comparisons to seasoned masters. Her sculptures have been showcased in esteemed venues, including the Amsterdam-Whitney Gallery in New York City, and have earned accolades such as the 2024 Sculptor of the Year Award from Artavita/World Wide Art Books and the Best in Show award in 2022 at the Loveland Library Galleria. Private collectors have also commissioned multiple pieces, underscoring the profound impact of her work.

Charlotte’s meticulous study of human anatomy enables her to craft realistic human figures, capturing strong likenesses, particularly in life-size portraiture. Her ability to depict gravity-defying moments and the fluidity of the human form exemplifies her artistic vision. Transitioning from engineering to art has been a source of immense joy for Charlotte, allowing her to embrace a balanced approach to life. She reflects on the challenges of mastering high-level figurative sculpture, noting the contrast between the formulaic nature of engineering and the intuitive process of art. For Charlotte, sculpting is a magical endeavor, transforming clay into lifelike representations that elicit profound emotional responses. Her passion is evident in each piece, capturing the beauty, strength, and emotion of the human experience.

“Art is a silent language to communicate with people and society without a word, as well as an introspective, soothing personal experience. I love the process of being in a Zen state and exploring a fictional sphere. To me painting is a door to an infinite imaginary world with indeterminate shapes, colors, forms or rules. I usually just go with the flow, letting nature drive me through a new experience. My current works are a metaphor between past and future, between reality and illusion. I want my paintings to be subject to individual interpretation and to each viewer’s own feelings.”

CAROLYN ROGERS

“In my artwork, I capture the simple beauty in everyday life, the commonplace or ordinary scenes in the environment. These images offer us rare moments of solitude, time to slow down and observe the world around us, and to enjoy quiet beauty and serenity. A photograph captures a portion of this beauty and tranquility, offering viewers quiet moments of reflection. Some of my favorite places to photograph are close to home, along city streets and nature trails.

I use water and light as beautiful threads that draw the eye in, providing an opportunity to examine nature and the built environment. The quality of light is of paramount importance, defining the textures and forms in nature and patterns of light and shadow. A strong sense of design is also important in these images.

I use the platinum/palladium printing process to capture a softer, painterly effect, evoking late 19th-century idyllic landscapes and lending a poetic quality to the images. The platinum/ palladium process, a timehonored method, also renders a rich tonal scale and permanence to the images. It is a time-intensive, handmade process—from coating the paper with varying mixtures of the platinum/palladium solution to exposing the negatives to sunlight and contact printing the image. Each platinum/ palladium print is a unique, vintage-quality print.”

MARÍA ARACELI SCHETTINI BAUBETA

My inspiration comes from a real event. Jimena represents a woman. She has left. She is very young. She sees the light. She is light. Where she leans, there is light. The light comes towards her. She is on her way to the light. There are colors all around her. She is waiting.

The inspiration for this work is based on the individual’s passage from what they believe to be real to the unknown. Death.

Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1952 and nationalized Italian, Araceli Schettini is a lawyer, appraiser, and public auctioneer with a parallel career as a visual artist and educator. She is a professor of decorative arts, having graduated from the Mabel Blanco Argentine Conservatory of Arts. She teaches painting at the Atelier del Parque Studio in Montevideo, Uruguay

Schettini’s work spans various styles, including impressionism, expressionism, abstraction, and conceptual art, evolving through critical and modernist phases. Her art, described as being created “with the heart,” reflects her deep study of classical masters and her humanist, emotional approach.

Exhibiting for over a decade, her works have been shown in Uruguay, Italy, and the USA. In 2022, she was named “Cultural Citizen of Uruguay” and received the International Merit Award for Culture in 2023.

“Rest and Play” is based on a woman; my model, whom I love, and whose body I draw and adjust based on an inspiration from Paul Gauguin. She has a rounded body, and her soft-colored clothes contrast with her red hat. It is avant-garde. I appeal to sensitivity through a concrete image in the foreground, on planes of colors that in the work are horizontal to each other, and she, immersed in geometric lines, observes the game of seven children from her family who are in the second and third planes.
