intro by the editor

I am both proud and humbled to introduce the 9th volume of International Contemporary Masters. What started out nearly a decade ago as a dare, a new concept – to put together from year to year in a single volume the works of over a hundred noteworthy artists from all over the world, to create a chronicle or cross-section of what is happening in art worldwide, simply letting the immense variety and scope speak for itself – has become not only resounding success, but an institution. Perhaps it is useful to restate the rationale behind this effort. We see that really, there are no longer any dominating “schools” in art, nor any center. Art has become amorphous, world-wide, has burst the bounds set by arbiters in the past. So we felt that it is of essential importance to chronicle this, to record not only the work of the famous, but also that of worthy lesser-known artists, to show the immense vitality, range and variety of artistic endeavor in the world today. Despite the immense problems humanity faces today, despite apprehensions about and artists, art continues to thrive, to spread and to show its strength. As publishers, we embrace this. We are not afraid of the new world, rather we embrace it, as we strive to show as much as we can of it from year to year.

We are providing dedicated spaces This is a show which has a difference from other shows around the world, being outspoken. Besides bringing artists and galleries together to present their works to the California art scene, the show focuses on raising awareness about issues like social equality along with raising environmental awareness. These are issues that we feel very strongly about, and we would like to take a stand, even if orientation; civil rights, in other words. Unfortunately, everywhere in the world, this is still a cause and not an established state of affairs that people can afford to take for granted. As for the issue of the environment, our very survival as a species is at stake. Some people might wonder if an art show is an appropriate venue for such statements. My answer is: how could it not be? Art is not mere decoration, although certainly it can have art. World Wide Art Los Angeles will bring a weekend of art and culture to the Greater Los Angeles area. her otherworldly visions in acrylic paints come alive with blooming vibrancy. As she bends reality with her playful use of surrealism, the artist revitalizes the symbols of the past still proudly remembered by inhabitants of the small island on which she resides. Rather than mourn the erosion of this as lighthouses gracefully dip, buildings gently sway, and sailboats indulge in a sunset embrace. In so doing, she creates a sanctuary of simplicity and whimsy, where beauty never fades and magic is tangible.

Later, she returned to art with a renewed vigor as she discovered a more liberated creative vision.

amit bhar Bangalore, India Amit was born in Hooghly Chinsurah (West Bengal) in 1973 and since a very young age, art has been a great passion in his life. His notebooks at with sketches and paintings. The scintillating, pristine, rustic beauty of rural Bengal inspired him to pick up the brush at a very tender age. The clear blue skies, fallen autumn leaves, grazing cattle and the daily life of the village, nestled on the banks of the river Hoogly inspired him. At the age of sixteen while at the Calcutta Govt. Art College, Amit was blessed with the guidance of Shri Paresh Das, a noted artist and gold medallist. Subsequently he gained further insights into art under the famous Subal Jana and Niloy Ghosh, who together enriched his style. He was also inspired by Bikash Bhattacharya and Suhas Roy during his initial period. Amit speaks of his style as “a new semi realistic technique of texturing with the realistic play of light and shade. His latest series on Buddha was inspired from the images of Ajanta paintings and Gandhara sculptures. Amit carefully blends the two forms of ancient Indian art and individualizes his innovative style. The Rajasthan series appearing like the photographic collages captures the glimpses of the puppets and the musicians. It gradually unfolds in the minds the images of the colourful folklore of Rajasthan against the sandy milieu. Amit can capture every subject on his canvas. In a nut shell, his paintings allow the viewer to reexamine the threshold between illusion and reality, between waking and dreaming.

lucie boswell aka artist 37 Los Angeles, California, USA “My art is a range of mediums from abstract painting, assignment photography that I also experiment with in digital, as well as, decorative mixed media art. It is an advantage to work in these multiple mediums as it allows me to explore each medium beyond simple practices with a desire to experiment and invent new ways of creating art and subject matter. In recent years I have created an entire body of abstract paintings by using airbrush paint on canvas that has created a one-of-a-kind style in each piece that creates art that is both unique and detailed in design and form accented the true abstract ambiguity It is my main focus as that can be discovered in my art. From use of color to abstract design, I wish to intrigue my audience and draw them into my subject matter using experimental and alternative technique as to evoke mystery and Angeles art scene from museums to artist organizations giving back to the art world. It is my ongoing desire to continue to evolve and reinvent myself as an artist!

Carl resumed painting on a full time basis in 1999, exhibiting widely on a national level. Mastering a variety of styles, Carl Clark’s paintings are owned by clients in the US and Canada.

The original concepts are reduced to the essential elements which convey a sense of place and time . The images are in strong composition and abstractions of color, to express feelings evoked from these places . My style varies from abstract to realistic and covers a wide range of present. The acrylic medium allows for a more fanciful interpretation of the subject . One of the joys of painting is to evoke some emotion, a memory of a time , a place, or a celebration of color.

pablo fernández márquez Mexico City / New York City “I was born into a family of artists and art is a vital element on how I interact and understand the world. Each piece is different for me, it is a new adventure, a process of discovery and in each case, the important thing is what the viewer can get out of the work, particularly on an emotional and spiritual level. Yet there are certain me, the sensuality of the work and the way in which art can transform objects into becoming parallels of the miraculous, giving new and active meaning to what we see. Sometimes this is felt in the senses, sometimes in the mind, but it is always there.”

Robert W. Firestone was born in 1930 in Brooklyn, New York. In 1946, at the age of 16, he enrolled at the University of Syracuse and in 1951 graduated from the University of Berkley. After which he began to paint and immediately revealed, along with his interest in psychology, a strong and persistent passion for art. During this period, he executed a series of landscapes seen in the course of his travels, as well as, while treating patients at the limits of emotional suffering, he completed numerous portraits of friends, patients and colleagues in a style which can Working on his Ph.D, which he obtained in 1957, his attention was attracted by the theories of Sigmund Freud and Otto Rank on one hand, while on the other, the life and work of the great artists Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gaugin. He has over the years published numerous articles and books on his psychoanalytical theories, forming the “conviction of the importance of the individual and his personal liberty, associated with a deep comprehension of the human condition”. Finally, he realized another of his great passions, the sea, in which he found he could most naturally live in the ideal condition of freedom. In the early ‘70’s, Firestone and a group of his friends bought the “Vltava”, an 80-foot schooner, and thus began many long voyages which continue even today. With his family and friends he has searched for a life full of coherence with the values of integrity, honesty and generosity. His activity as a theorist in psychotherapy and his intense expressive research has lead him in recent years to dominate masterfully the language of digital artistry. All of the inspiring motives of his creative work derive from his own human and professional experiences, as is evident in the cycles of works he has completed over the last ten years. In early 2000, he began to exhibit his work in international galleries and museums, as well as in public and private collections.

shelia granger malone Madison, Mississippi, USA “People have often asked for my artistic statement, so here it is: If I have created twoor three-dimensional works of art and they communicate with my viewers, I am happy. Hopefully, my works can speak for themselves. Whatever messages the viewers receive from my works, those are the right messages for them. There are no wrong or right messages as long as there is some form of communication being experienced. As long as my art stimulates the mental, spiritual or tactile receptors of a viewer, I My works focus on bright, gestural impressions of nature and objects. A liberal sense of Impressionistic colors, shapes and forms are displayed throughout my recent works. I try to project artistic sensitivity in each individual piece. My underlying goal is to project a provocative union between reality and imaginative expressions. I want to engage the viewer into a visual and spiritual conversation. I also include subliminal symbols and information that may stimulate an ongoing relationship between my works and the viewers. My images are extensions of my Mississippian and Southern environments. I create many of my pieces in my studio, using photographed locations.

I didn’t set out to be an environmental artist or to become a social commentator, but as my portfolio developed and people started to comment on my works, the aforementioned descriptions started to emerge from my subconscious into my conscious thoughts. My work tends to focus on personal experience, the evolution of God’s creations (mostly people), and their spiritual journeys. Most of my works are inspired by my persistent desire to share my heritage with my children, and to give them “roots”. Some of my more recent subject matters are about people’s daily routines and their comments on human nature. that I see, feel and experience. The artists that I most admire are Monet, Seurat, Roy Farmer and Wonda Hendrix. Based on my belief that art is meant to be an intricate part of one’s daily life, I’ve immersed myself and my family into an environment saturated with artistic expressions. Through Art I have the means to relax, relate and release. Now, my hands can’t seem to stop talking. Enjoy the conversation!”

Martha exhibits and sells her work internationally. Currently, her painting “Brassia Orchids Dancing II” is on exhibit from July 8-31 at the Broadway Gallery N.Y.C. and in the Fall, 2014 issue of the NY Arts magazine. Other exhibits: the 2013 Power of Perception 2013 Limited Expressions International Contemporary Masters, Vol. 5 exhibit at the Southern Museum of Fine art in Las Vegas, NE. In addition, Martha’s work has been selected by national juried exhibitions. Including, the Blossoms II-Art of Flowers national touring exhibition to Disney Master 1995 International Colored Pencil Society’s annual exhibition. Greiner’s body of art work is multimedia with a wide range of subject matter. Including the lost drawing method the Old Masters used by drawing with metals as her medium. Art critics have described her work as, “There is an understated incandescence to the images that is both contemporary and classic all at once. Her works related so strongly to the very concept of perception; your style places you in an artistic realm that is somehow dream-like, almost surreal, yet not quite there, as if some ghostly memory from a far-away place; yet somehow entirely familiar a vision that resonates with the viewer long after viewing”.

jack jasper “My art is relational. I have always been fascinated by creation myths and I perceive the universe as having evolved from one catastrophic event. From one point, everything emerges, with the best scenarios trying to rush to completion. I’m drawn to experimenting with combinations of elements, sometimes alluding to air, underlying sexuality, unfolding as a shimmering becoming—a synchronicity between disparate elements. My theory of art and life is dialectical. From the one point of creation, all contradictions arise. My art tries to reconcile this.”

yuni ko Ontario, Canada “My passion for art started in my early teens, and was further enhanced when my family moved from Korea to Vancouver, Canada. I studied art in France and Canada and my work evolved into my own vision. Growing up in West Vancouver, surrounded by trees, mountains and the environment and its abundant beauty. I explored and painted the Canadian landscape in a realistic style. My parents are adventurous and passionate about travelling and they gave me opportunities to see the world and experience different cultures, societies, and art. My current artwork is focused inward, on my feelings rather than on my studies of nature and other subjects. When I paint, I feel more in touch with my emotions, which led to my painting series called The Flow.

Dream II Mixed media on canvas 22 x 20 in. or 56 x 51 cm

The Flow represents the transitional movement of feelings and experiences throughout my life: joy, love, sorrow, courage, fear, pain, accidents, diseases, death, friendships, family, faith and hope. cannot stop or control this movement; we recognize and adapt as we live it. All of us face challenges with weakness of our mind, body and spirit. If we are fortunate, new opportunities arise to liberate us. We begin again. This is the gift of life - to

Listening Mixed media on canvas 32 x 20 in. or 81 x 51 cm

Contrasting shades and textures characterize The Flow paintings. Dark shades symbolize the struggles of life and the light shades contain a sense of hope - the potential path to a more positive future. Metallic colors represent my identity. My father spent over 30 years in the metal business. His research lab inspired me to use metallic colors, and they symbolize a positive energy that an artist’s emotions can be personalized through the heart of each viewer. This is my intention with The Flow.. Trying Mixed media on canvas 8 x 16 in. or 20 x 40 cm

Here nature blends patterns and colors in tidemarks, layers of earth and microscopic land forms. The bottom of canvas expressing a soulful, ethereal sense of design, color and paint application. Raised in the country, close to nature but not people. I have closely observed earth’s formations. Now, years later, these impressions make their way into my art. Microscopic images come from my own photographs or sketches and expanded 1000% using mediums of oil encaustic, acrylic paint, string and gold leaf. It is my hope that my paintings express both dramatic and serene sensibilities and create a visual meditation on environmental beauty. noushin ourmazd Noushin Ourmazd was born in a small urban province of Iran in the 1950s. Her upbringing saw her and her family relocating all across the country, as per the demands of her father’s career. By her late teens, her fascination for the arts was born, in particular painting and photography. She began nurturing this talent for the visual arts under the supervision of her mother, an avid painter. Noushin’s body of work is a product of her life story, the stories of her people and the identity combat in society. She quests the unknown and looks for the light within the shadows. She is interested in the way we become part of a society and establish identity, while taking the emphasis society has caused people confusion and a loss of identity. Her recent work embodies stories that their environments, where they are more relent. She is curious what lay behind their eyes, who they are and who they desire to be. She would like to acquire an awareness of Iranian families in their intimate surrounding, even though feeling more secure, but still with a trace of confusion in their eyes. She describes “ in us, the essence of human ability in adaptation for survival”. Her choice of subject comes from a place of intuition and is fuelled by a vigorous desire to partake in the stories that unfold in society. Some of her images are about people’s daily routines and their intimate environments. Left: Motory Below: Khastegy Opposite Page: Three Men All images: Color digital photograph

kurt steinle Raeren-Eynatten, Belgium “It is important to me that my models can unfold themselves in front of the camera, show me their emotions, sometimes it works, sometimes not. By taking photographs I try to show emotions, I let people act freely in front of the camera. I’m trying to create just a good atmosphere. I walk through the less well-known neighbourhoods of large cities, mainly Paris, observe and sometimes I take pictures.” Kurt Steinle, lives in a 17th century farm in Belgium. His photography is as much technical as it is emotional and expresses a romance and aura of a different time.

Painting has helped me out of depression and has given me the possibility to create my own world. With my constant work and discipline I created my personal style. rachel tribble Palm City, Florida, USA Rachel Tribble’s award-winning artwork has captured the attention of a worldwide audience from corporations to private collectors. Her inspiring dream-like motifs demonstrate her unique talent and experiments in color and light. Originally from Manhattan, Rachel’s combined love of music, costume design and stage lighting took her into the world of nightclubs, where she minimally experimented with performance while working as a jewelry designer. In the early 90’s Rachel moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, Here, she expanded her professional horizons into dark and sometimes controversial music and art performance pieces, included multi-media installations within rock’n’roll nightclubs and rave productions. The depth of the Minnesota winters allowed her to contemplate silence and cold, and her work took on an ever more social and environmental issues and transmitting them through the work. Taking a hiatus from her life as a professional artist, in the mid 90’s Rachel shifted her focus. Living and working within the Native American community she entered upon an ever more inspiring journey deeper into the natural world. In 2003, she returned to her traditional training as a painter. Inspired by the mystical worlds of the Aninshenabe and Lakota people, she set forth on a journey of color and light that would her work as an artist and how she develops meditation and ambient spaces for her private environment design projects.

Dream II Oil pastel on linen 40 x 30 in. or 102 x 76 cm

Rachel’s work has been featured in art books such as the International Contemporary Masters Vol. V and VI and national magazines, including Florida Design, Better Homes and Gardens, Garden Design, Coastal Living, and many others, as well as gifted to nominees of the Academy Awards, the Emmy Awards, and the MTV Movie Awards. Rachel Tribble currently lives in South Florida where she continues to dedicate her work to peacefulness in the world and the celebration of the Earth, Sky, and the multi-dimensional universes.

Working primarily in abstract painting with mixed media, Mikaela’s works are tactile and speak a three dimensional language with clear but very diverse concepts. Her series“Circles” highlights the peculiarity of life: in spite of how incomprehensible it may appear at times, it always seems to make perfect sense at other points. Her series “Women of Marrakech”, is a tribute to the beautiful, colourful women hidden by force by a niquab (the black, full face-covering the veil poses when interacting with nonveiled women such as the artist herself.

6.

“As an artist I have the privilege but also the challenge to evoke certain emotions within people. As a very tactile person, I struggle with the ’Do not touch’ -rule in the art world; sometimes one needs to touch something to understand it better. My works are therefore distinctly tactile so that even when not touching, it brings the observer closer to feeling them.” 4. “For years I lived on the Southeast Florida coast where my wife Lynn and I studied and photographed the reefs and wrecks from West Palm Beach to Fort Lauderdale. We did most of our diving on a stunning reef line from Boynton Beach south to Delray Beach. We also frequented the Upper Florida Keys, with its famous wrecks and pristine reefs. We make annual pilgrimages to “blue water” destinations. In the past those trips have taken us to locations in the Bahamas including the alluring blue holes at the Cay Sal Banks, the Exuma Cays, and the Northwest Bahamas area that includes Cat Cay, Port Lucaya and Bimini. We have also visited the Cayman Islands and the spectacular Bloody Bay Wall. In April, 2007, I spent several days diving on the famous “Nuclear Fleet,” at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The coral reef and oceanscape photographs you’ll see here are from those locations. When I relocated to Denver Colorado in 2009, landscape photography became an exciting and challenging new area of study for me.”
