IN T R O D U CT I O N BY T H E E D I TO R We are pleased to present Volume 3 of “International Masters of Photography”. As in the previous two volumes, our goal is to include a broad spectrum of contemporary photographic practices, and for each photographer, to provide within a few pages a comprehensive presentation of their style and aesthetic. focus is not only the maker’s technical know-how but also their unique way of seeing, framing and capturing remarkable moments in time. A great photograph can be captured in just seconds, even accidentally or it can take months or years of meticulous preparation and determination for the perfect timing to come together for that perfect click. It this selection of photographers we have included professionals and hobbyists, all up and coming artists whose work is a pleasure to look at and a gain to collect. Notable in this volume is a special retrospective of the distinguished photographer Ken Heyman. Famous for iconic images in many genres – portraits, documentary photography, and much else, winner of many awards, and with exhibits in such august venues as the New York Museum of Modern Art, and a regular contributor to such publications as Time and Life, Ken has also been a mentor to many younger photographers who have become noted practitioners of the art in present selections from three of his portfolios: celebrities, a collection of his personal favorites, mostly documentary photography which he considers to be his best work, and “hipshots” a collection of photos he made without even looking through the lens, which is a true tour de force. As with all volumes in this series, every image was individually selected and purposefully placed to create a curated memoir of modern photography from around the world. With the turn of moment in time, here, on this wonderful planet we all call home. -Thomas Tunberg Master Editor

in photography in high school. Later, during his student days at Columbia College - which were interrupted by a two-year stint in the army - his skill as a photographer grew, but still regarded photography as no more than a hobby. Then two events in college helped to direct him toward his career in photography. First, he sent off selections of his work to two national photography annuals and was pleased, indeed surprised, when both indicated they were eager to print his pictures. But perhaps more important was his becoming a student of the paper requirement in one of her courses, Mr. Heyman submitted a photographic essay that interested the famous professor. Out of this began a friendship and collaboration that continued for more than twenty years. Columbia in 1956, when she invited him to go with her to take and others where he went alone. Since then, Ken Heyman has photographed in more than sixty countries. These photographs have appeared in major exhibits and in two books co-authored with Margaret Mead: Family (1965) and World Enough (1976). Ken Heyman has done photographic assignments for many magazines, including Life. He has worked for the U.S. Information Agency, photographing Alliance for Progress projects in Latin America, and for several photographic agencies, including the Rapho Guillumette Agency and Magnum. Shows of Ken Heyman’s work have been held at the New York Museum of Modern Art (1963), the Hallmark Gallery (1965), the International Center for Photography in New York City (1976), and the Zabriskie Gallery in Paris (1995). Ken Heyman’s work has brought him a number of awards including “The World Understanding Award,” considered to be one of the top awards in photography. It is given “to honor the photographer whose work has contributed most to a better understanding among the world’s people.” Ken Heyman has done many books in addition to Family and World Enough. His recent works includes twenty-two books for children written by Ann Morris. The multicultural perspective in these ability to sensitively interpret the human condition.

He called and said, “I’m rich, and I want the two of us to go to Havana and I’ll pay for the trip.” My brother heard of this and bet me twenty dollars that I couldn’t photograph Hemingway. I did and I had to swim naked in his pool in order to get his portrait.” - K.H.

“Professionally, I’m a photojournalist--having done 161 assignments for Life, as well as assignments for Look, Time, and The New York Times, etc. Occasionally when I’m asked, I say, “I’m a people Margaret Mead, the well-known anthropologist. Dr. Mead has more shelf space in the Library of Congress than anyone in American History. One book that we did together was called Family. It sold over a quarter million copies and was nominated for a Pulitzer. The problem upon taking that assignment was to photograph the people of the world. In preparation, I pinned a large map of the world to my wall. In it, I would visit all the English speaking countries. As I had speaking countries. I am a large man, at 6’1” and at that time weighed 225lbs. The problem at hand was to work out a system where I would come into a foreign home, and be able to photograph a mother and child or whatever. I soon learned that it was necessary to get out of the capital city in order to get a true photograph of the culture of that country. I’ve also photographed over one hundred celebrities. Andy Warhol painted my bathroom wall for four hundred dollars. And, I did a book called, “The Private World of Leonard Bernstein,” where I joined him and Charlie Chaplin for dinner one evening. All of these experiences taught me a great deal, and I learned that my real objective in photography is to capture the true personality of my subject.” - K.H.

M T MARINE TERLIZZI Marine Terlizzi grew up far from where she was born. “Where?!” is usually the answer she got when she told people she grew up in Bahrain. Her art class at school only had 6 students and trying to develop as an artist in the Middle East wasn’t the easiest of things. Having travelled a lot, she grew up exploring other cultures and considers herself a citizen of the world. pictures of the kids growing up or their many travels, all the walls of her house were covered in photos. Marine had never truly been able to express herself through drawing or writing, but discovering photography opened a whole new world. She loved the sense of power and control when her lens gets locked into place, the weight of the camera, holding her breath and then slowly pressing the shutter button. She has always composed images, long before she even had a camera. Photography to her is not just taking pictures, it’s making pictures. Creating something from scratch and being involved in every aspect of the process is something she strives for. Her intent isn’t to tell a story, but rather plant a seed and let your mind wander...

ES B E VA N B . S I E G E L Evan Siegel was born in 1948 in New York City and presently lives in Newport Coast, California. He began his study of photography in high school and has taken a number of intensive workshops with prominent photographers such as Greg Gorman and Lindsay Adler. He taught photographic technique in Washington DC, has had several solo exhibitions in Chapel Hill, NC and the Washington DC area, and participated in several group exhibitions. He is a member of PPA, Professional Photographers of California, and ASMP. “My approach to landscape, wildlife and nature fashion captures, involves a careful assessment of lighting, form and angles to create a series of images that are both pleasing and emblematic of the mood of the subject and setting. I use Leica S, Canon 1DX and Sony A7R equipment, favor longer lenses for living subjects, and medium wide angle lenses for landscapes. The use of shadow and highlight, as well as my intent to minimally manipulate digital raw images in Lightroom (and, rarely, Photoshop) are important. - E. B. S.

M ANN Y R ICO Manny Rico became one of the most sought after photographers on the professional tennis circuit and his vibrant images of Broadway icons while working for theatre and dance photographer He has had the privilege to photograph Broadway legends Bob Fosse, Lena Horne and Angela Lansbury, as well as brilliant choreographers such as Pina Bausch, Robert Battle and Paul Sanasardo. “As a photographer, my eyes compose the image before I take the photograph. The craft of photography has enabled me, not only, to become a story teller but also to live through the stories as they unfold before me. Currently working on wedding photography in exotic locales such as India, Thailand and numerous locations in Southeast Asia, I have garnered praise for the compositions that honor tradition, culture and the human spirit as it unfolds in the celebration of marriage. All these worlds— fashion, dance, tennis and weddings have allowed me to see humanity in all its astonishing splendor and grace. And that is what has made the difference to me as an artist.” - M. R.

AS ANNE SCHLUETER Los Angeles based artist, Anne Schlueter has garnered international recognition, receiving the 2015 Sandro Boticelli award for excellence in art/photography in Florence, Italy. Recent group exhibitions include Landscapes, Seascapes, Skyscapes in Laguna Beach, the Worldwide Art LA International Art Fair in Los Angeles, the International Art Festival in New York, the 2015 International Masters exhibition at the Southern Nevada Museum of Fine art in Las Vegas, and the Roma Piazza del Popolo: From Caravaggio To Modern Days, Museum Complex at the Sale del Bramante, Rome, Italy. Anne’s work has been published in Contemporary Art of Excellence 2015, Internationale Kunst Heute 2015 and International Masters of Photography 2.
Anne was an exhibitor at Photo Independent 2015, an international exposition of contemporary photography held at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood, California. She presented a new body of work called ‘Water Works’,extreme close-ups of pastel-colored ice, water and mud that morph into strangely sensual, intergalactic, geological surveys. Anne recently debuted her new book, Water Works, a hand-crafted, leather-bound, limited edition of 25. The book showcases signed, numbered, removable prints of all nine images in her Water Works series. This excerpt from the Curatorial Statement to her book is perhaps the best description of Anne’s work:
“Anne Schlueter’s abstract photographs are deceptively seductive. The best images simultaneously evoke both the micro and macro worlds from vastly different vantage points. Whether that is deep inside the minute structures of a pool of bluish ice, or from an omnipotent spaceship, looking down on an alien landscape. This duality of both meta-world and unearthly evocation is the fascination of so many of Schlueter’s photographs. Far out and far, far away could easily be the subtitle of this artist’s exhibition. Many of these photographs act like blueprints of creation, where Schlueter’s terrene begs to be cloned and endlessly replicated to create new worlds; both worldly and otherworld at the same time. Her sweet palette of blues and sea foam greens vibrate out from their pastel simplicity into mysterious,

“My photographic experience has been an effort to produce a graphic narrative of life. By reducing our world into black and white, my photograph becomes an abstraction of reality. This storyboard, an image of our natural environment, serves to evoke an emotional insight into my personal feelings about nature and life. Even though the viewer may have never seen this part of life before or seen it displayed in this manner, the natural world can bring a greater understanding of us and our human journey. My guide throughout this work has been the images made by those photographic masters who forged the way. The beautiful tonality of Ansel Adams, the visual stories of Paul Strand and Minor White and the forms of Edward Weston have been my primary tutors.
photography become secondary as I reveal this account of what had existed, how it has changed and how it has affected other natural events. The subject has begun the tale, the image captures but a small time segment and the viewer completes the visual process. Encapsulating these changes, I offer a glimpse of life’s struggle and triumph; a deeper feeling for our human experience in two dimensions bounded by a white frame. These photographs then become a symbolic and graphic narrative of our experience.” - S. A. I N T E R N AT I O N A L M A S T E R S O F P H O T O G R A P H Y V O L . 3

During his career he has travelled all over the world on a variety of commissions, his work has appeared in many books and he has received numerous industry awards, including, from the Association of Photographers awards London, Gold, Silver & Merits for his landscapes, exteriors and people photography. He was awarded Best photographer in the Association of Photographers Open Awards 2013 for his Detroit project.
2. “My approach to photography has always been a simple one, I photograph what interests and excites me visually, I want the something to the viewer. On any personal trip shooting landscape completely in the location while I’m away. I try not to think about anything else back home, just concentrate on looking for pictures. Getting lost and immersing myself in a location, means I gain a more complete understanding of my subject, which helps me to illustrate it as effectively as I can.” - R. B.

KITTY CANN
1. As a young child growing up in Western Australia’s rugged Pilbara region, photographer Kitty Cann spent her days climbing over sunburnt boulders and wading through shin-high Spinifex. A keen bushwalker, who was always ready for adventure, Cann developed an early love for nature and landscape photography and (from childhood) never left home without a disposable camera. Since then, Cann has focused on developing her photographic skills and experimenting with different styles to produce powerful images of her surroundings. “Capturing emotion in a still image carries many challenges,” Cann says. “Combining my experience with the drama of nature and the art of creating keeps me motivated.”

“ What is becoming my photographic life adventure, was revitalised when I picked up the book ‘Color Correction, Ernst Haas’ by W. Ewing. The colours, the shapes, the patterns and contrasts were inspirational. I need balance in my life, so I was looking for further inspiration and this came in the form of ‘American Photographs’ by Walker Evans. As much as Haas had brought me colour and ambiguity, Evans brought extreme clarity and tone. I continue on my life adventure studying, learning, and improving my photography. My work here attempts to bring together the vibrancy of Haas and the clarity of Evans, knowing that I have a long road to travel before I become even close to these Masters.” - T. F. .8

“Occasionally I am asked why, if I have devoted my academic career to teaching color design, I print my own work in black and white. I offer the following as an explanation. The only single property of color able to stand by itself is the color’s lightness and/or darkness. The property by itself translates into black, white and grays (technically called values). Values are described in percentages of black, so a 0% value is white and a 100%value, black. (What is referred to as a middle gray is technically a 50% gray). In other words, if the hue were removed from a color the remaining area would appear to be a gray that fell somewhere between white and the relationship between the grays will always remain the same no matter how light or dark the whole print may be.” - P. I became aware that my camera and I have a special connection similar to the one I have with the piano. My awareness of beauty and uniqueness seems to connect with my camera like a fourth eye, able to create pictures outside me in a magical way. Originally from Mexico, Roberta Marroquín currently lives in NYC and has been working since 2010 on a light painting project, “Dans le Noir.” These images derive from the two disparate cultures that coexist in Mexico: modern Christianity and Native beliefs. Roberta arrived in NYC in ICP. In the summer of 2000, she headed to Paris, holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Science from ITESM Monterrey. Roberta received a BFA from Parsons Paris in May of 2005. “As a photographer, my eyes compose the image before I take the photograph. The craft of photography has enabled me to become a story teller and to live through the stories as they unfold before us. Currently working on wedding photography in exotic locales like India, Thailand and other locations in Southeast Asia, I have garnered praise for the compositions that honor tradition, culture and the human spirit as it unfolds in the celebration of marriage. All these worlds —fashion, dance, tennis and weddings have allowed me to see humanity in all its astonishing splendor and grace. And this is what has made the difference to me as an artist. - M. R.

.2 “My work has stemmed from an interest in monochrome landscape photography, spatial relationships and minimalism. I am fascinated by the magnitude of space, scale, perspective and the way light falls on the landscape. Objects and places that are not noticeable, even Long exposures strip away distractions through the symphony of movement and time. The viewer’s attention is directed to the still elements, dominant within this unending motion. Finished photographs are the result of meticulous attention to detail, combining research into locations with the sensitive technique of long exposure photography. As the shutter is held open for a period of time, the scene in front of the lens continuously replaces itself upon the digital sensor. The layers of motion otherwise indistinguishable to the eye become apparent.” - J. S.

“The magic of photography has intrigued me since I was a child. I grew up in a small town near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The hills and valleys and wildlife of the area instilled in me a love of nature and my wanderlust has always kept me searching for new vistas to experience. In taking photographs I try to compose shots that one could get lost in – as though one were looking through a window or into a kaleidoscope. My hope is that people may appreciate my views of the beauty of nature as well as the beauty that man can create.” - E. S. 1. Bushkill Falls Digitally processed color digital photograph 2. “Landscape Photography is tough. You’re dependent upon the weather; it’s ever changing light. Many parameters change constantly and yet that’s exactly why Landscape Photography is so interesting to me. It is my passion that drives me every time again, to take the effort to go ask here is, what is it that I am looking at? It’s beautiful, it’s colorful, but I wonder what is it? When you ask yourself these questions, I as a photographer have achieved my goal. You should be puzzled, even when it’s only for that brief moment. The next thing is aesthetics, without it, the picture is not worth looking at. It is an essential part of my creation. I will take the opportunity to highlight certain parts of the landscape, but never unnaturally. The natural landscape is beautiful already; it is to be left unspoiled.” - R. T.
