Introduction
he second volume of Important World Artists features 72 uniquely gifted artists from all over the world, and presents works in all the media of the visual fine arts that can be presented on a printed page: painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, 2-and 3-dimensional mixed media, photography, digital art, prints and lithography. For each artist, we tried to create an individual presentation, however brief, that will provide an insight into their practice, career and unique character. At the same time, we kept in mind the overall goal of creating a beautiful anthology of art, presenting the widest possible range of contemporary practices, thus creating a reference of high quality contemporary art from all over the world, for collectors, galleries, art consultants, interior designers, architects and other professionals concerned with fine art. Also our books together constitute a syllabus which can be used for educational purposes, for the study of contemporary fine art, and in fact they are increasingly being used by educational institutions in many parts of the world. Ilse Ortiz de Manzanares Managua, Nicaragua
e live in a remarkable time when deeply hidden spiritual knowledge & practices are being discovered through Quantum Physics. In addition, great Spiritual Traditions around the world are making public much of their formerly secret knowledge, including in recent years the Mayan, Nahuas, Incas and many other ancient cultures that are the caretakers of our birthright: our shared human legacy of accumulated spiritual wisdom. Perhaps the most fundamental— and essential — part of this spiritual knowledge is to know the actual patterns, the energy blueprints, which everything in creation is based on. Everything is based on a specific pattern; knowing that pattern unlocks the ability to make full practical use of it. This is true whether speaking of patterns of higher spiritual realities, psychological and behavior patterns, energetic patterns, or actual structures manifested in the physical world and represented through art. My art proposal recycles ancient symbols to build the metaphors of our contemporary culture. In ancient Central American societies, as in European,Tibetan, Jewish and Muslim societies, it was a fact that the essence of creation is not Matter. These inner spiritual initiation teachings of over a dozen great world traditions identified the specific Sacred Geometry forms as symbols of this knowledge that nowadays Quantum Physics and Technology just discovered as the matrix of everything.
Every form is a symbol of knowledge, an important medium through which spiritual information conveyed. The simultaneous perception of the holomovement present in quantum physics that Prehispanic sculpture established many centuries ago, as well as many other ancient cultures, is the main theme of my sculptural work. The simultaneous perception of several possible positions and drawdowns at 90 and 180 degrees, are constant in my sculptures constituting forms consistent with the theory that postulates holomovement in contemporary physics. My journey in art has been long and continuous. I held over sixty-five group shows and 16 solo shows, in Nicaragua and abroad. I have participated in diverse Art Fairs, from which is worthwhile mentioning Art Basel-Miami, SOFA Chicago, Espace Expression Gallery in Miami, Fundación CURSOL in Alicante, Spain; International Contemporary Artist, by International Contemporary Art Books. I have appeared in International Contemporary Art Books, Entre Siglos, by Fundación RozasBotrán in Guatemala; Open Studio Magazine, Boston; I also have been the recipient of numerous awards, among which is worthwhile mentioning the First Prize at the Exhibition of Women Artists in Taipei, China, in 1999. In 1977 I won the distinction awarded by the famous Latin American critic Marta Traba, at the International Xerox Art Exhibition. In 1975 I was awarded the First Prize in the Jubilee Exhibition of Columbus Day, sponsored by the Embassy of Spain and the Institute of Hispanic Culture in Nicaragua.Today, I continue my art journey with the same intention with which it began, discovering in the unvalued spaces of our culture the opportunities to reflect on it. - Ilse Ortiz de Manzares

CHAOS AND THREAD (C.A.T.)
Auckland, New Zealand.
Throughout her life, C.A.T. has been creating and exploring her artistic side. From illustration, design, abstract painting, and stitching, she demonstrates an exploration of a variety of mediums and processes. C.A.T.’s background was based in illustration, however, she has now evolved her practice into pure abstraction, driving her need for self-expression without the constraints of reality. C.A.T. is interested in visually exploring the inner rooms of our mind that hold our darkest meditations – bound and locked away – eternally protected. The concept that shadow energies exist internally and provide a natural contrast between light and dark, influence C.A.T.s’ work. C.A.T. creates out of her studio in New Zealand. Living close to both the beach, native bush and the city, provides C.A.T. with the necessary juxtaposition of relaxation and excitement. Music plays an important part in her creative process evoking moods and emotions while developing work in her studio.

“In my work, I am attempting to express the happier more playful side of surrealism. I refer to my work as “Abstract Surrealism.” Each painting has its own evolution. My concern is in creating a unified composition of color and form which allows maximum participation of the viewer in the artwork. Since the form does not represent an image that the viewer can immediately recognize and label, they are allowed to look inward to themselves to create with their own imaginations whatever their current mood moves them to create. My work falls somewhat in line with AUTOMATISM, a method of painting (or writing) used by surrealists, that depends on the re-emergence of subconscious images.” - T. G.

He further developed his technique by following courses in the atelier of Clara Miedema in Rotterdam. He has had exhibitions in the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, France, the USA and Germany. “The main theme of my work is industrial and cultural heritage. Sources of inspiration for my paintings are abandoned and often ruinous buildings. I record these often before demolition by photographs and sketches. Use of color and use of light make my paintings special events. Dark sadness is changing into light and warmth. Regularly I add characters into my paintings who provide another or an extra dimension to the image. The tension in their relationship is sometimes nearly tangible. Besides the oil paint for the top layers, I mostly use acrylic paint as ground-color or priming. In several paintings, I used gold foil, acrylic modeling and glazing gel.

HOW MY MOTHER BECAME AN ARTIST By Johannes R. Kratz - 5th Grader School Assignment My mother came from a family of six children. The members of her mother’s family were all interested in Paintings and Calligraphy. One of her uncles was famous for his calligraphy in Canton, China. As a child my mother did not know she would become a painter, but she liked art and drew very well. She drew so well that her art teacher sent her to represent her school in a competition, where she won second prize. She was shy and did not tell her parents how good she was. Her parents only knew that she was a good student and did not worry much about her. Her two younger brothers went to the same school as my mother. Her art teacher told her brothers how good my mother was. They then told her parents. But they still didn’t really care.

One day my mother’s uncle saw my mother draw. He was very surprised. He was so impressed that he told my mother’s mother how well my mother could draw human hands. Only then was she sent to study watercolors with a private tutor. She won a scholarship to come to the United States and go to college. She liked biology, mathematics and art, so she had a hard time choosing what she wanted to be. She decided to become an artist. She went to school free, because she was on honor roll. She became a professor, but now is a full time painter.

MANFRED LOIMER Innsbruck, Austria
Manfred Loimer, born in 1946, lived in Innsbruck since 1972 as a freelance painter. He worked at various positions including for convert agencies, as a freelance cultural editorial manager at local newspapers, he taught Drawing at the Anatomical Institute with Prof. Krautgasser. Loimer participate in courses at the painting school of Innsbruck and was a member of the Association for the Promotion of Contemporary Art, Gallery Club of the Encounter and more. Loimer, defined by his pictorial technique and his essence as a Mannerist, creatively dwells in an antagonism between an emotional contingency and his own brains’ thought apparatus, which manifests in his images variably in conceptual constructs or within the subconscious, sustained by an unpredictable vigor. It is this antagonism which accounts for the liveliness and the aesthetic appeal of Loimers’ paintings. The color, form, line and person of the artist - his personal handwriting - enter into an interdisciplinary power play, a whole is created and then melting away again, a unique unfathomable world becomes known to the viewer in these pictures. As a material for his generously powerful painting, Loimer mainly chooses human beings - nobody specific, anybody . In this way, his images turn into allegories overcoming the profane Dasein. Frequently, Loimer composed small poems to his pictures.

Since 2010, Karl W. Lu has created his most recent and ongoing art series – “The Origin Series” which visualized Lu’s understanding, view, and intuitions about the origin of universe, life, and art with his unique and fluent abstract ink brush strokes. In fact, it reflects Lu’s broad and deep interests in science, philosophy, and art. He started to draw when he was only a boy of three years of age, he learnt fine arts systematically through his school years at a Class of Fine Arts of Hangzhou Children’s Palace where he also met a group of gifted students in visual arts, most of them later studied at China Academy of Art and other universities in the fields of art, design, and architecture. Lu and some of his classmates then became leading figures of the significant “85 New Art Movement’ in 1980s, China. Besides art, Lu was also good at science and enrolled at a top Class of Science of the top ranked high school in Hangzhou soon after the end of Cultural Revolution in late 1970s; when he started to question the world philosophically. Although he studied civil engineering & building design in early 1980s, he engaged himself more into philosophy. He also did a psychology course at China Academy of Science in mid 1980s, when he worked as an engineer. “All my interests in science, philosophy, and art …. all come together into my artworks”, as Lu always said.

“ I grew up and spent most of my life in Costa Rica. My dream of painting began when I was almost seven years old in school when we had to paint the Book of Life. The book was a written record of important daily events which we had to illustrate with our paintings. My work always had positive comments from the teacher. Later as a young woman I studied for many years with five Art Masters of painting. From these wonderful Costa Rican teachers I learnt to distill an essence of their knowledge which I translated into my own style.

Finally I try to create a dream in my art work which I express through the dimensions of color, shadows and feelings with the reward of seeing expressions of delight amongst some of the spectators. En Lin Qing likes to keep it simple and goes by En. Born in Japan, he packed his bags and flew to America to attend college and found himself surrounded by the abundant beauty of the Blue Ridge and Appalachian mountains. Metropolitan areas such as Washington, D.C. also caught his attention with its urbanization. His smartphone camera morphed into an artistic tool in his hands. As En’s photography skills developed, so did his desire to create the quality of work. He consequently upgraded to shoot with an EOS 7D and now works with an EOS 5D Mark III. “When you see my art,” En says, “I want you to free your mind of any particular disposition. Maybe you are aware of your deepest feelings. Maybe the feeling is intense. Maybe it feels quiet. Maybe you feel like a feather in a hurricane.”

SIDSEL SCHJERVEN Oslo, Norway
Norwegian artist, Sidsel Schjerven was born in Oslo and today lives between there and Berlin, Germany. She paints with both acrylic and oils on canvas and on other materials. Schjerven’s begins by laying the formal composition with color which for her is the most important aspect. Schjerven studied at the Norwegian Institution of the Arts and in 1985 had her first solo show in Oslo. Now, with more than 20 solo shows in her native Norway, France, and Italy she continues to actively exhibit. Through her bold and vivid paintings, Schjerven questions and challenges the world around her. Every painting is an homage to the realm we live in, as both physical and spiritual beings. She is interested in exploring the technical aspects of painting and in expressing a “Joie de Vivre” through her work. The mysterious, the magnitude, the dreams and the moments of bliss as well as the solitude: all of these factors include a search for the holy grail, and sum up the main focus of Schjerven artwork. ▷ My Italian Journey, 1986 Oil on canvas 37 x 49 in. or 94 x 124 cm

My biggest influence comes from my first lessons of History of Art, when I discover Pierre Soulages. The idea of light emerging from nothing seduces. It is like drawing pencil light from nothingness. NICHOLAS H. TEETELLI Manalapan, New Jersey, USA
Glacial Abyss Color digital photograph
Nicholas Teetelli is both a published and international award-winning fine art photographer. He was born in New York City and grew up in lower Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. During the late 1960s, and into the 1970s, the Village was a hotbed of culture and the arts. During this period, Teetelli was introduced to art and photography, developing an interest in what would become his lifelong passion. While he took some photography courses in college, Nicholas Teetelli is primarily self-taught. Spanning the last four decades, he has learned, developed, and honed his skills independently, becoming an avid and serious amateur photographer who has recently turned professional. Although he lived and grew up in New York City, he has spent many summers in the Greek islands and has traveled to many other places in the world. He continues to travel extensively in pursuit of the perfect photographic image. During each journey, with camera in hand, he records much of what he sees, sharing the impression of his mind’s eye through composition, light play, and shape and design. His photographic portfolio is diverse: it includes landscape, architecture, portrait, flora and fauna, underwater, and street photography. He has recently brought his portfolio to the public eye and, in short order, has had more than one hundred of his photographs juried and invited into exhibition at dozens of galleries and museums across the United States, receiving many awards for this work. He has won awards in international competitions in Moscow, London and Tokyo, a featured artist at major art shows at Art San Diego, Spectrum Miami, Artexpo New York, has private gallery placements in Vienna, Austria and Bologna, Italy, as well as being one of the photographers to be featured on Royal Caribbean’s Azamara ships in their Artwave shipboard galleries. He almost exclusively uses Leica cameras and lenses which yield superior results for him. He has recently added a Hasselblad medium format camera to his bag.

STEPHEN WYLER Atlantic Beach, New York, USA
“Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, I’ve always had an innate creative interest in music, art, language, decorating, and design, to name a few. I am very fortunate to have been able to live a childhood dream professionally, for many years. This included travel, and the opportunity to live in Europe, with Italy as my home base. In years to follow, with a strong affinity for Latin Culture, my travels expanded to Brazil, Spain, Portugal, and France to explore the art, music, language, and cuisine of each country. Currently, with more time at my disposal, it’s possible to return to an early passion: Painting. In many of my works, the strong influence of earth tones, vivid colors, and textures, may all be apparent. One may experience a feeling of happiness, curiosity, spirituality, as well as passion. I consider myself a non-objective, emotional artist, constantly exploring various media and color combinations, to evoke a more profound response in the viewer. If I succeed, my mission is complete.”

It is a reflection of the external world, but it is not visible or literal, which makes it mysterious and engaging. The internal world is affected by the external world to some extent. Especially to an introvert, like me. I usually have to adjust my mental balance to keep the mood calm.Well, it is hard to say who is in control. Me or my internal world?

“I was always fascinated and intrigued by the creative process of painting. I am using colors to express human emotions, and I’m using many different techniques to achieve this specific effect. Color is the most important element of my painting. For me, colors are objects that represent human feelings. Some of my paintings explore human desires by downgrading the subjects to almost formless images. In creating abstractions, I usually start with a group or a pattern of colors and work on them to achieve complete order. My work examines the emotional experience and is transformed to colors, patterns, and designs. It has always felt like visual storytelling: stories I can’t tell verbally, narratives that speak to each person in a different way.”
