GHEORGHE VIRTOSU Self-taught artist, Gheorghe Virtosu comes from the Republic of Moldova. Ranging from gritty and painterly to poetical and ethereal, the characters in Gheorghe Virtosu’s paintings are free spirits of nature caught in a game of multiculturalism and plural voices which join in together to produce divine harmonies of colour and meaning. These paintings are like nothing we have seen before: dressed up in hooded cloaks, equipped with weapons which look like magical devices and displaying a puzzling other-worldly demeanour, the characters tell us nothing about themselves, and everything about the universe they belong to. But they are very sparing with who they are letting in: unequivocally, they invite the audience to actively engage with art on more than one levels and lead the way to first-hand experiencing aesthetic knowledge, sensorial and intuitive perception. Gheorghe Virtosu’s art is a vibrant living manifestation of the world around. H T T P S : / / W W W. V I RTO S U A RT. C O M C O P Y R I G H T @ V I RTO S U A RT. Introduction This is the third volume in our new series Important World Artists, following the critical acclaim that the first two volumes met with. This volume presents the work of 79 outstanding artists, each of whom is at the height of their creative power. Almost all media are represented here – painting, drawing, mixed media, sculpture, installations, photography, digital art and more. And as usual in our books, almost every region of the world is represented. We believe that this volume, as our previous ones, will constitute an invaluable sourcebook for curators, art consultants, gallery directors, interior designers, other art professionals, and also educators and students, as well as for art lovers everywhere. Like our previous books, this publication also should constitute a bright addition to the mosaic-chronical of contemporary art worldwide, which we are creating and expanding with each successive volume of our books. Sponsors The artist Tero Isokääntä is sponsored by COST-EFFICIENT MATERIAL DRYING WITH NEW TECHNOLOGY Many materials are left unused because processing them while wet is not possible, drying them is not profitable or the material cannot be handled with traditional technologies. We have developed a new cost- efficient, scalable and mobile drying technology called ModHeat. With ModHeat, we dry value out of even the most difficult materials. SFTec was founded in 2013 as a spin-off company from the University of Oulu. The idea for our main product ModHeat stems from the metallurgical industries’ need for more cost-efficient material dryer. The solutions before were either too large and expensive or too small and inefficient. Founded: 2013 Website: sftec.fi Contact: Jani Isokääntä jani.isokaanta@sftec.fi +358 (0)40 834 8088

Jeanette has exhibited through the hospitality and services industries – annually holding art shows together with vintage car shows. After moving to the Dandenong Ranges to live on100 acres in a National Park she has painted plein air, portraiture, still-life and then abstract expressionism. She has supported the Rotary Club and managed the Gembrook Market. Jeanette changed direction in 2002 to build Gembrook Cottages with a boutique shop - perfect for artwork. Jeanette Adams is an awarded artist, who with likeminded artists wanting to lift the profile of Contemporary Art in their area, formed South Eastern Contemporary Art Network in 2013 where she became an inaugural committee member. “Latest work is the 100-acre cool climate mountain ash National Park where I live using a visual language of shapes, colors and lines with white to symbolize purity. Most things that could be interpreted as traditional are removed – this blurs the line between realism and imagination. The approach is relaxed and intuitive rather than analytical- believing in mark making to express and respond in a personal way to what I see. The viewer can use their experience to see within the forest this can make the artwork interesting even subjective.”

NELL BEDNARZ Texas, USA Lubbock, Texas native Nell Bednarz explores influences of nature, the Christian faith, and Texas’ cultural heritage on our lives, emphasizing an Expressionistic Narrative style. Bednarz began working as a child on the O’Briant family farm with her father, Jack O’Briant. Her mother, photographer Wilma Nell Garnett (O’Briant) Little, introduced her to art as a child, as did her school art teachers at the local schools. The materials she uses for fine art jewelry and paintings are a natural extension of her life, as close to the land as the metals, stones, chalks, and pigments she uses. Nell Bednarz celebrates 50 years as an artist this year by participating in national and regional pastel exhibitions. She was selected for the 2017 MUSA International Art Space Exhibition Woman’s Essence 2017 in Paris, an exhibition for international women artists, and nominated for Woman’s Art Prize 2017 by Europe Art Awards. That award year honored Berthe Morisot, the famous American Impressionist in 19th century France. Bednarz’ painting Butterfly Dance, Circa 1920 continued on to the WE Contemporary 2017 exhibition in Rome, Italy. Her artwork may be found in private collections in North America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, and Europe, as well as in print in the 2014 publication International Contemporary Masters, Vol.8. Nell Bednarz has been a member of the 2017 and 2018 Winter Faculty of Rockport Center for the Arts in Rockport, Texas. The artist’s fine art designs are shown in the following galleries: events and exhibitions for the Pastel Society of Southeast Texas; Rockport Center for the Arts of Rockport, Texas; and her website.

Born in Zurich in 1946 Monika Casutt completed a Degree in Psychology and then worked for several years as a Psychologist. In 1986 she moved with her family to Tuscany, where her artistic work began with clay. Ancient cultures are a source of inspiration for Casutt, and she feels a strong inward attachment to them. They repeatedly impress her all over again with their archaic power, their simplicity and their connection to a deeper reality. Monika Casutt has been living in Switzerland again since 2007. Her most recent exhibition was in the context of the 2017 Venice Biennale.

GEORGETA CONSTANTINESCU Vienna, Austria From the very beginning, Georgeta Constantinescu’s painting explored her unique relationship with space; space in the sense of the universe. She seeks to establish new mobile perspectives that will make this space expand progressively until it becomes a different world. A mixture of spontaneity; quick gestures, and extreme meticulousness building images by successive layers of material. The result is quite impressive. Often her works can be seen in all directions. There is neither left nor right, neither up nor down, the layers are overlapping one over the other in order to bring from the background to the foreground a canvas with vibrant colors, full of meaning and life.

Andrea Cook plays with texture, pattern, and repetition to create unity in each unique piece. Employing her imagination and inner light she creates a connection with the viewer. Born and raised in Dallas, TX, Andrea received a lot of encouragement to follow her dreams: “My first childhood classes were drawing, watercolor, and ceramics. I continued art through high school, where I enjoyed metals, ceramics, and printmaking. My desire was to make one-of-a-kind, original art,” she explains, “I went on to attend UT El Paso, where I fell in love with sculpture. I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Sculpture and Painting.”

“Art is the tool that I use to shape my thoughts and emotions. It is about much more than merely creating works of art. To me, artistic creation is a form of meditation, through which I pursue and achieve one of my main aims in life: to constantly evolve and become a better human being. The peace, joy and balance that I experience this way, are part of the rewards. Making art is a great source of pleasure and satisfaction.

JANA FLETCHMAN Manchester, UK Born in 1969 in Russia, Jana Fletchman moved to Estonia in 1986 and then to England in 2013. She began drawing at the age of 3 years old dreaming of one day becoming an artist. Fletchman studied Floral Design in Estonia and entered a few international competitions as a florist with some success. She worked with pencils, acrylics, and painting on silk and also created wearable art (i.e., batik and felted scarves & hats). “It was quite a successful and incredibly interesting experience” as she describes, but Jana always felt that she was not exactly where she wanted to be until she finally got there when she discovered wool painting and fell in love with it.

“I am a self-taught artist working with wool fibers. With respect and appreciation, I create a life for the material I work with. It helps me to establish a special, warm and touching relationship with wool. I feel an incredible energy exchange between my soul and the spirit of wool. Wool as a natural product lives and breathes, it is capable of transmitting color, depth, and warmth of a living thing, but demands passion, intellectual rigor and solid technique to create an original and unique work.”

Raphael Gindt became a self-employed artist at the age of 19 and has always been passionate about Street Art in all its forms. The artist, born in 1993, is mostly known for his creative way of using and mixing various styles and techniques. While most of his pieces are very expressive, others take up a rather surrealist look. Gindt is known for his deep and spectacular large-scale murals as well as for his more delicate glass sculptures. He applies paint onto various surfaces by dripping, splashing and spreading it with a palette knife.

Be it on a brick wall or a glass panel; he always manages to convey strong emotions to the viewer. Especially when using glass, he plays around with light reflection to emphasize the expressiveness of his paintings. Each portrait he makes represents people from a particular phase of his life. Alongside his personal creations, Raphael Gindt is also devoted to transmitting his know-how to the younger generation. This is why in 2016, he founded two non-profit organizations that promote artistic education (Street Art Culture A.S.B.L. and Urbano Limits a.s.b.l.).

“Visual reality is an ever-shifting, highly individualized experience. In any given moment, what we see reflects both our inner state and a synthesis of outer qualities—light, color, movement, space. My exploration in dimensional photographic art represents an attempt to recreate the perceptual experience, with its dynamic nature and hidden complexities. In my patented process, I use photographic constructions, a single, often abstracted image is layered over itself on clear acrylic surfaces and superimposed on a subtle grid. The resulting visual phenomenon infuses the image with a sense of dimensionality and fluidity affected by such changes as the angle of viewing and light. Yet perceptual mechanics are only part of the equation. Equally essential are universal principles of design that produce qualities we perceive as beauty. This is my aim: to skillfully combine technology and aesthetics in a way that expands the viewer’s experience of photographic art.”

TERO ISOKÄÄNTÄ Finland Born in Kalajoki a small city in Finland in 1982, Tero Isokääntä was doodling with pens before he could even walk. They would joke with his artist mother that he started painting when he was still in her belly! Creating his first oil painting when he was four years old, Tero has been a painter since the age of 16. For almost 10 years he used oil colors exclusively, but wanting work faster he turned to acrylics. He has recently returned to oils.

When he was learning Glass, he did a lot of reading about Native Americans, the world’s different religions, spiritual knowledge, and philosophy. As a result, his work reflects a kind of mystical presence. Due to no access to equipment needed for glass work, Tero continued to paint and fuse what he had learned to his two-dimensional works.

A pacifist and war resister, Tero Isokääntä refused all options and was sentenced to 6 months in prison. That experience still enriches his life and his art because of the different life views and life stories he was introduced to. Due to this experience, Tero thinks more about what he wants to say to people with his art and what kind of energy he wants to bring in to this world.

At 18 years old I had a photo shoot for my birthday and from that day on photography became my second love. I studied art and photography while attending the College of Staten Island and graduated in June of 2017 with a Bachelors in Art: Concentration Photography. “I was born in Luxembourg on the 2nd of September, 1960. Since my early years of high school, my passion for mathematics and figurative compositions has led me to develop my art with the technique of embroidery. At first, I embroidered my jumpers with designs of my own creation. Then, at the end of my schooling, I started producing geometric figures and experimented with the half cross-stitch technique, playing with vibrant color tones. Since 2010, I have been creating paintings with art and design computer programs. The knowledge of these software packages has allowed the creation of canvases with colors and shapes that were not possible with the half crossstitch technique. The ability to use digital art tools allows me to develop my art more and more.

ELISA MORERA Nebraska, USA “I grew up and spent most of my life in Costa Rica. My dream of painting began when I was almost seven years old in school when we had to paint the Book of Life. The book was a written record of important daily events which we had to illustrate with our paintings. My work always had positive comments from the teacher. Later as a young woman, I studied for many years with five Art Masters of painting. From these wonderful Costa Rican teachers, I learned to distill an essence of their knowledge which I translated into my own style.

My human figures are created primarily from a feeling about a subject, and then I apply my style which stretches from expressionism to Dali-like surrealism. Children inspire me, especially sad children that adults have produced pain in their soul, who are lost and waiting to be found to become superheroes to give us a direction to make a better world.

NGUYEN THAN Saigon,Vietnam “Mine is an art in which the past, the present and the future mingle together. I was born in North Vietnam and grew up in South Vietnam. I dearly love things such as the mountainranges at my mother’s native place, the oxen, the pitiful little birds, the women, so simple in their countryside dress, standing or sitting anywhere in my paintings (representing the fading and dim memories of a past childhood). My growing up in South Vietnam, during a sad and lasting war, is being represented by wandering and solitary horses (images of dead heroes), nude women looking into nothingness (the past war), fish and the immense blue sea (the Vietnamese who have absurdly died on the sea...), the arrows, the white dots to show my journey toward the future. Those are love songs materialized by unending colors and forms in my paintings.

ALINE POUGET France Aline Pouget was born in France and from a very young age, her passion led her to create mesmerizing watercolor landscape paintings. Later, Aline’s work focused on space and color. After some enriching time, she turned to painting; first using watercolors, then oil on canvas, which is still the technique she uses to date. Aline’s first wave of painting emphasizes her love for the wonders of nature symbolized through colorful and bright landscapes. Her second wave depicts space and the meandering paths of the cosmos. Her work reflects her passion for both colors and the endless, infinite universe around us.

PATRICIA QUEIRUGA Cordoba, Argentina “The motivation to begin to create and translate with colors, textures and different materials on canvas or paper or painting, arises from an inner search for expression different from my emotions. I always try to communicate something to the expectant; all the colors, shapes, different types of materials, etc. are to carry a message, understanding that not all people tune the same frequency. I like to express messages of vitality, energy, joy, respect. I found in my work that I can channel my communication that is why at the beginning of 2017 I began calling myself artworker because it is a term with which I identify and gives me a sense of freedom. With some artistic movements such as Expressionism, Cubism, I feel at ease, but it is in my essence to investigate and use different techniques. I think exploring gives us a wealth of knowledge that can be reflected in the work of art. I wish the expectant to get my message with the full conviction that art is also a language of communication.

Russian/Danish artist, Natalia Rose studied Philology at Moscow State University and Copenhagen University and she would have likely chosen writing as her art form. She has worked with the written and spoken word prior to moving her focus to creating visual art. Her paintings are intense and vivid, with strong lines and color schemes. They carry a semiotic component with a broad scale of historical art references that are sure to amuse the avid viewer. Natalia was born in Russia, and the Russian inspiration is apparent in her works. The influence of abstract expressionism is also clear. Several of her paintings can seem unfinished. The suppression of detail is a conscious decision of hers. With this dimension, the viewer is invited to create interpretations. Natalia Rose lives in Copenhagen, Denmark, for the last 37 years. GHEORGHE VIRTOSU Chisinau, Moldova
Connection Of Civilizations Oil on canvas 133 x 130 x 3 cm
Abandoned Oil on canvas 133 x 146 x 3 cm
Ranging from gritty and painterly, to poetical and ethereal, the characters in Gheorghe Virtosu’s paintings are free spirits of nature caught in a game of multiculturalism and plural voices which join in together to produce divine harmonies of colour and meaning. These paintings are like nothing we have seen before: dressed up in hooded cloaks, equipped with weapons which look like magical devices and displaying a puzzling other-worldly demeanour, the characters tell us nothing about themselves, and everything about the universe they belong to. But they are exceedingly sparing with who they are letting in: unequivocally, they invite the audience to actively engage with art at more than one level and lead the way to first-hand experiencing aesthetic knowledge, sensorial and intuitive perception. Gheorghe Virtosu’s art is a vibrant living manifestation of the world around. Crown Holder Oil on canvas 136 x 131 x 3 cm
