What is authority?

Do we need authority?

Do you think that a person in a position of authority may help us solve our problems?

Many times we decide by ourselves what we want to do. No one tells us to do it.

Many times we do what others say we should do.

Does the mother have the right to tell her daughter to brush her teeth?

Does he have the right to make the other boy give him his food?

Give me your food, or I’ll hit you!

Authority can help us share things in a fair way!

The teacher might say the pupils to use one box of crayons at a time.

Authority can help us protect property!

Our parents and our teachers may say not to write in the books, to protect them from damage.

Authority can help us settle arguments!

When you Play a game You might have a referee. He or she sees that the Players follow the rules. The referee Decides what to do if a player breaks the rules.

Authority can keep us in order!

Our library has rules about using books. Without these rules you couldn’t be able to find the book you want.

Authority can keep us safe. The rules at the swimming pool help to keep you from falling and getting hurt.

We must decide who the persons in position must be. So we vote.
