With five years of training under reigning Iron Chef Tadamichi Ota in Osaka, he fully appreciates the importance of cooking from the heart and serving each meal with warmth and sincerity.

The food at Sasagawa is designed to impress. Chef Sasagawa’s skills lie not only in his cooking techniques but also in the impeccable display of his creations. Dishes here are beautifully presented in immaculate detail, making each meal an edible work of art. The menu is exceptional as each item is crafted using a different cooking method. For sashimi, fresh seafood of the day has been especially flown in from Japan, comprising snapper, tuna belly, prawns and salmon. The third course is Wagyu beef simmered with daikon radish and pumpkin. House special chawanmushi makes up the next course, followed by deep-fried ebi and vegetable tempura. The gastronomic offerings end with a grand finale of individually steamed salmon rice garnished with salmon roe, accompanied by miso soup and seaweed pickles. For dessert, there’s the enticing choice of vanilla, black sesame or green tea ice cream or yuzu sorbet.

7 of Kuala Lumpur WONDROUS SIGHTS

Photo: Shutterstock

Kuala Lumpur is rated as an alpha world city, a city of global appeal. It is renowned for its landmark buildings, well-developed city planning, arts and culture scene and world-class education system. If this is your first time in Kuala Lumpur, and you don’t want to miss the best gems it has to offer, then we recommend the seven wonders of Kuala Lumpur.

Wonder #1 The Old Colonial District of Kuala Lumpur is in the vicinity of Independence Square (popularly known as Dataran Merdeka or Merdeka Square). Here, on 31 August 1957, Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, lowered the Union Jack and hoisted the Malayan flag to proclaim the country’s independence. The 95 metre-high flagpole was once the tallest in the world prior to 1980. Today, with flags billowing in the wind, it is still a magnificent landmark. Surrounding buildings are designed in Moorish architectural styles with unique Corinthian columns capped with Mughal domes. At Merdeka Square, the Kuala Lumpur

City Gallery and the Tourist Information Centre are housed in a heritage building which showcases comprehensive historical facts of the city’s past, and provides updates on its present and future. This tourist hot spot features a quaint gift shop stocked with unique memorabilia and the world-famous Arch’s Made in Malaysia wood veneer gifts. Admission to the gallery is free. Bicycles can also be rented here at a very reasonable rate.

Wonder #2 The National Mosque or Masjid Negara is a sacred place for Muslims to perform their prayers. Built in 1965, the building is highly recognizable through its 73 metre-high minaret. The mosque can accommodate up to 15,000 worshippers at one time. The interior is dominated by the high-ceilinged main prayer hall and the large windows which let in natural light. Robes are given to tourists to cover their head and body as a mark of respect during mosque tours.

KLANG VALLEY

Wonder #3

KLANG VALLEY

Batu Caves is one of the more well-known sights of Kuala Lumpur. Batu Caves is a limestone hill with a series of caves located at the top of a hill which lies in the northern portion of Kuala Lumpur. It is also the site for the Hindu temple of Lord Murugan, one of the main deities worshipped by the South Indians. At the site, there is a 42.7 metre-high figure of Lord Murugan, the tallest figure of its kind in the world. Next to it are the 272 flights of stairs that lead to the main caves. As you walk up, herds of monkeys can be seen, seemingly unafraid of humans. Batu Caves is also the final stop for the mystical annual Thaipusam festival where devotees come pierced with huge carriages and sharp impediments in homage for favours granted to them by their God.

40

Wonder #4 The National Monument is a towering sculpture of soldiers, one of whom is holding the national flag. The monument was set up to commemorate the dead who fought in World War II and during the Malayan Emergency, a guerrilla war between the Commonwealth armed forces and the military arm of the Malayan Communist Party from 1948 to 1960. The seven bronze figures symbolize leadership, suffering, unity, vigilance, strength, courage and sacrifice. A cenotaph nearby commemorates those who fought in both World Wars and the National Emergency, with their names inscribed on it. The inscription reads: “To Our Glorious Dead (1914–1918), (1939–1945) and the Emergency (1948–1960)”.

Wonder #5 Thean Hou Temple is one of the largest Chinese temples in the city. Its eye-catching architecture makes it a veritable attraction. It is advisable to hire a taxi to reach this destination but the gorgeous scenery is worth every penny! Little India in Brickfields is the perfect place to learn about Hindu culture and explore the colourful shops selling all types of goods, textiles and prayer items.

KLANG VALLEY

41

Wonder #6 Royal Selangor Visitor Centre is the place to go to gain a wealth of knowledge about pewter craft, origins and processes. The interactive tour provides fascinating information on how pewter (alloy of tin, copper and antimony) is made. Innumerable elaborate pieces are also displayed. You may even have a go at making your own customised pewter collectibles.

KLANG VALLEY

Wonder #7 The National Palace, also known as Istana Negara, was once the official residence of the King of Malaysia, before the establishment of the current official palace located along Jalan Duta. It is designated as the Royal Museum and contains an enviable collection of royal artefacts and priceless collections. Admission to the museum is absolutely free.

Meet the Five Most Epic Tribes in Sabah AN ENLIGHTENING EXCURSION INTO MARI MARI CULTURAL VILLAGE

Expect to discover the unexpected at Mari Mari Cultural Village. That being said, one thing is certain: you will be sure of a warm welcome! Incidentally, the word mari translates to “come” in the Malay language. This is a hint in itself, an indication that warmth and hospitality is in plentiful supply in Sabah, home to more than 30 indigenous ethnic groups. Mari Mari Cultural Village is a one-of-a-kind cultural hub that presents you with one of the best experiences this second largest state in Malaysia has to offer — an in-depth exploration of the fascinating traditional homes, customs, daily routines and way of life of the top five tribes in Sabah. It’s a totally different world out here! Entering Mari Mari Cultural Village is almost like stepping back in time and voyaging through a magical land steeped in tremendous mysteries and wonderful secrets. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to witness a headhunter sinking his blade into the flesh of a slithering snake or even see the residents casually munching on the juicy ulat butod, like the Oompa-Loompas in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Situated in a rainforest setting about 30 minutes from Kota Kinabalu, the village is a gateway to diversity. Guests are to walk in a single file, following an elected leader who in turn is shown the way by a designated guide. At the entrance, as you are on the threshold of your journey, take the opportunity to study the map which displays the dwelling places of the five largest ethnic communities in Sabah: the Kadazan-Dusun, the Rungus, the Lundayeh, the Bajau and the Murut.

KADAZAN-DUSUN The Rice Farmer

Dusun would remove the ladder usually placed at the tangkob to protect the grains from theft. In ancient times, those caught stealing would have their heads chopped off as punishment! Inside a Rumah Dusun or Walai Silia, the bamboo house of the tribe, you will find three rooms belonging to the grandparents, parents and unmarried female members of the family. At night, the ladies will stow the detachable stairs connecting their room to the lower floor for protection. The Kadazan-Dusun people are also famous for their rice wines. They will teach you the two ways of making rice wine, via fermentation and distillation. Watch how they mix sugar, water and rice to produce the traditional wine known as lihing.

Linapak is a popular dish cooked in bamboo and banana leaf. Taste this scrumptious delicacy that’s got just the right mix of meat, spices and salt.

RUNGUS The Longhouse Resident The first time you step inside a Rungus house, be prepared to be impressed by the 150-foot-long structure. Most Rungus longhouses consist of 80 rooms. Imagine a house with the same amount of space in the city today. It would probably be the grandest, costliest mansion in town! A Rungus house is a communal residence, which explains its size and length. One house is dedicated to an entire village with the village chief’s room at the centre. One room is allocated to each family and every family has its own role, which is evident from the working space given to them in front of their rooms. The Rungus people are skilled honey makers. It’s interesting how they produce honey using only bamboo as tools! Another unforgettable invention is the somtoton, their version of a trumpet.

SABAH & SARAWAK

The first traditional house belongs to the Kadazan-Dusun, the largest indigenous group in Sabah. The Kadazan-Dusun are zealous workers, devoted to their paddy fields. This is where you’ll get a first-hand tutorial on how rice is processed. Watch how the Kadazan-Dusun thresh the paddy using hamparan for harvesting. It’s amazing how even in the olden days the villagers had already devised an ingenious storage solution for their precious rice. The fruits of their labour were safely stored in a special storage space or hut called the tangkob for half a year. No one was allowed near the tangkob. At night, for extra precaution, the Kadazan-

LUNDAYEH The Hunters and Fishermen The Lundayeh hunters and fishermen are one of the former headhunting tribes found near Kalimantan and Sarawak. Do not panic! Only fear them when you’ve committed a wrongdoing. The Lundayeh clan is known for leaving marks on ropes, stones and trees when they are out hunting. The Lundayeh use blowpipes as their weapons. You can easily identify a Lundayeh by the handmade ropes they carry and their

distinctive handmade vest made from the bark of the Timbagan tree. The Lundayeh house will make your blood run cold! Their past reputation as the headhunters of Sabah is evident in their practice of collecting the heads of their enemies and displaying these as trophies. In these modern times, the gruesome collections are only used to scare enemies away. In comparison to other ethnic groups, the Lundayeh house is simple, featuring only two rooms for the parents downstairs and the single ladies upstairs. The men sleep on the lower floor in the open space as they are the guardians of the house. The roof of the Lundayeh house serves many practical purposes. It provides a useful vantage point to survey the surrounding areas for foes. In warm weather, the special features of the roof provide ventilation, functioning like a natural air conditioner and cooling the interior of the house.

The Lundayeh are hunters and fishermen. The tribe is found near Kalimantan and Sarawak.

BAJAU The Cowboys and Sea Gypsies

MURUT The Headhunters

The second largest clan and a Muslim community, the Bajau people settle in large, beautiful and colourful houses. They are the wealthiest among the tribes as they make a living from trading. There are two types of Bajau traders: the sea gypsies and the carters.

Although this is the last pit stop before the end of the tour, guests are to remain in their position in one straight line and watch as their group leader is greeted and confronted by one of the Murut communities’ village chief. If your leader misses any of the group members or forgets the exact number of people in the group, be prepared for serious consequences! All the commotion is just for show, of course. The Murut have long renounced their headhunting custom but their legacy as fearless, aggressive warriors remains.

A popular snack from the Bajau group is kuih jala, which they make using wooden sticks that form a triangular shape in coconut oil. Triangle represents unity, a very important value in Bajau society. If you’re missing your beauty sleep, they have the perfect traditional remedy for you. The Bajau extract juice from ginger and pandan leaves to alleviate insomnia. Similar to other parts of Malaysia, a Bajau house also showcases a pelamin or dais during weddings, a centre stage for the bride and groom. The kalintangan, also known as gamelan, is played as background music.

The Murut clan’s weapon of choice is the blowpipe, which they skillfully use when hunting. Visitors will get to test their skills with the help of the Murut experts. Be careful, poison produced from wild plants or frogs is applied at the tip of the dart! Upon entering the Murut house, an old lady will sprinkle daun tirai herbs on you for blessings. The longhouse is similar to the Rungus tribe and is inhabited by a whole village. The best performances are saved for last. The Murut tribe will entertain you with their aerial gymnastics! Join them in the lansaran game, where five players jump up high to reach a tail hung from the roof. In the past, the man who gets the tail wins a buffalo but today the winner receives a cash prize. Join in as the tribes perform Sabah’s most famous traditional dances for you. A word of advice: do not miss your step as you take part in the highly entertaining bamboo dance. The rhythms are undeniably fast so timing is of the essence!

Sepilok:

Bringing Out the Jungle Animal in You

Remember the adventure stories by Edgar Rice Burroughs? What if Tarzan was orphaned in Sepilok, Sabah, instead of the jungles of West Africa? What if he’s reared by orangutans instead of the fictional Mangani great apes? That ought to get your imagination going! Well, let it run wild, we say! Destination Malaysia takes you on a journey through the wonderful world of Sepilok, where the lords of the jungle are apes and bears, and humans can play a starring role in their survival. When you visit the orangutan rehabilitatiaon centre, make your way to the Open Nursery. Brace yourself for some cuteness overload as you witness the antics of the baby orangutans! But do take time to learn more about the serious threats facing orangutan populations in the wild. It’s harrowing to think that the vulnerable creatures you see before you have lost their mothers to the illegal pet trade. Did you know that 760 orangutans had been admitted to Sepilok since the centre’s establishment in 1964? It’s time for us to give these arboreal primates a fighting chance! The Open Nursery has many functions and features: JUNGLE GYM The baby orangutans learn to climb and swing, important skills for these tree dwellers to master. PLAY CAGE It’s play date time! The baby orangutans get to meet and mingle, and just play together! What are you waiting for? Snap some photos, share some love with these gentle, highly intelligent “people of the forest”, and learn a thing or two about the conservation of this endangered species. Up next are the Bornean sun bears. Their plight is another story. Turn the page for a precious glimpse into their past, present and future… destinationmalaysia

The Tale of the Bornean Sun Bear A STORY CRYING TO BE TOLD At the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC), every bear has a story. These animals have experienced being tormented at least once in their life. Poachers steal sun bear cubs from their mother, cruelly snatching them from their rainforest habitat. Sun bears are exploited for traditional remedies that are not even clinically proven. The sun bear is the world’s smallest bear species. There’s a high demand for it in the pet trade. People tend to focus on the sun bears’ cute physical appearance and overlook the fact that these adorable creatures are facing a serious risk of extinction. What one fails to realize is that sun bears suffer profoundly when forcibly removed from their natural environment. These endearing teddy bear lookalikes need to be protected! Luckily, they are given a new lease of life at the BSBCC, a true refuge for rescued sun bears. Here, the bears have a chance for a better existence. “I am like their surrogate mother,” says Mr Wong Siew Te, the centre’s founder. “The baby bears are fully dependent on their mothers and cannot survive on their own.” He has assumed the role of “Papa Bear” to the orphaned bear cubs, a responsibility he does not take lightly.

Mr Wong Siew Te Founder of Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre

Mr Wong’s passion in wildlife conservation is clearly demonstrated in his commitment to establish, run and maintain the centre despite initial financial challenges. Currently, BSBCC is home to 35 sun bears. Come and visit them to learn more about sun bears and the essential function they play in the web of life. Each sun bear has a unique, non-identical chest mark pattern. The sun bear can weigh up to 60 kg and grow up to 150 cm in length. Spot its very long tongue which is practical for extracting honey from bee hives and eating insects such as ants and other invertebrates. Discovered in 1835 in the Malay Peninsula, the sun bears carry the Malaysian identity. They are also known as beruang Malaya. Although they are a source of national pride,

it is heartbreaking to see their numbers decreasing due to human activities. Of vital importance is the fact that sun bears are the gardeners of the tropical rainforest. For instance, they assist in seed dispersal, help improve soil quality and protect plant species from termites by consuming them! It’s safe to say that entire ecological communities and the health of the forest depend on these remarkable creatures. The good news is you can play an active role in their survival! At BSBCC, you may adopt a sun bear of your choice and get updates every two months on their well-being. All you have to do is choose a sun bear from the share bear list available on the BSBCC website or brochure. It only costs RM100 to share a bear with others every month. If you’d like to exclusively adopt a

sun bear, check out the “My Bear” section on the website. With your help, the sun bears will get to amuse themselves with enrichment activities provided at the two bear houses here. They will be involved in climbing, sleeping in hammocks and feeding out of a bamboo tube. It takes about a year or two for the sun bears to gain enough confidence to venture out into the forest enclosures. “We recently released our very first bear, Nathalie, into the Tabin Wildlife Reserve,” recalls Mr Wong. “She had been with us for four and a half years.” BSBCC proves that a sad story can still have a happy ending. Are you ready to do your part? To find out how and to learn more about the BSBCC, visit www.bsbcc.org.my.

Among the amazing artefacts displayed here are astrolabes from the 17th century, jugs from the 14th century, lacquered fans from 1883–1994, leaf from the Shahnameh in 1565, beard combs from the 17th–18th century, ceramic dishes and cotton batik. Take a closer look at the images as some may contain manuscripts depicting ancient civilizations. The Architecture Gallery pays tribute to the Islamic community’s devotion to the Muslim place of worship, the mosque. Most importantly, it contains a replica of the Ka’aba in Mecca. Every notable Islamic architectural icon is reproduced in miniature, from the Ka’aba to the more poignant beauty of Central Asian mausoleums dedicated to Timur and Amir Albukhary. A close scrutiny of these miniatures will reveal that Islam does not impose specific designs or architectural guidelines. Instead, each nation has its own way of preserving and displaying Islamic elements. Among the features that are universally maintained are the crescents and the minarets. Certain mosques feature Qur’anic verses on the external walls. The size of the front of the mosque also varies. Mosques in Central Asia often have grand entrances whereas their Middle Eastern counterparts display smaller versions. The oldest fragments of the Qur’an are usually attributed to North Africa or the Middle East, dating back to the 8th century. Significantly, Islamic manuscripts were not only used as reading materials or religious texts but also served other purposes. Some of the manuscripts were acknowledged as communication tools and tomes of philosophy. For instance, books on hadith and prayers, genealogies of the Prophet Muhammad, treatises on Islamic laws, and works on astronomy, mathematics and medicine were important genres. In the Indian Gallery, you can relive the golden days of the Muslim dynasties that ruled Northern India three centuries before the Mughal era (1526–1828). The Mughal dynasty expressed their celebration of beauty and culture through the images of their rulers, courtiers and horses along with an appreciation of fashion and interior designs. It’s fascinating to know that even their daggers are made of jade! destinationmalaysia

In China, Islam was practised in major trading centres such as Xian and Guangdong. You will definitely fall in love with the delicate beauty of Chinese ceramics. In comparison to creations from other countries, the Chinese inventions are standout pieces due to their imaginative use of the colour red, blue and green. The quality is outstanding even though some Arabic inscriptions may be a little difficult to read as they were influenced by Chinese writing styles and characters. Some significant items are the calligraphy scroll from the 20th century, cloisonné enamel incense burner and porcelain rosewater sprinkler from the Kangxi period.

You may have heard of the legendary Sultans, Hang Tuah and other Malay warriors. Come face to face with the weaponries they used! By this, we mean the esteemed keris, the mystical daggers which carry secrets and stories of their own. You’ll be astonished to know that the keris’s distinctive features and

characteristics serve beyond aesthetic or functional purposes. To determine a man’s rank in society, one can examine the wavy patterns engraved on his keris; the more waves the blade had, the more powerful the owner. Gold keris could only be used by the aristocracy while men with no royal blood were given silver keris.
