TOURISM MALAYSIA GAINS MOMENTUM IN CHINA The year-long charter agreement between Tourism Malaysia and Hubei Wanda New Airlines Travel Services based in Wuhan, marks a symbolic new stage of the Malaysia-China tourism recovery plan following the disappearance of flight MH370, as smiling Chinese tourists arrive in the masses at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. “The Wuhan-Kuala Lumpur charter flight route is a major development to regain our footing in the China market,” says Chairman of Tourism Malaysia YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Ng Yen Yen. Until recently, Tourism Malaysia had suspended its advertising and promotions in China during the critical weeks of the MH370 investigation. YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Ng adds that constant personal contact was maintained with China partners, engaging with them and communicating with them, so as to uphold the relations that were built over the years. To reassure its partners of Malaysia’s commitment to tourism promotions, Tourism Malaysia started a series of familiarisation trips for CEOs of major tour operators in China. Using Malaysia Airlines services, the participants experienced tourism products such as Penang, Royal Belum Rainforest, Perhentian Island, Redang Island, Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur. They were also introduced to new tourism products such as Fly and Drive, cycling tourism and ecotourism. By then, Tourism Malaysia’s promotional efforts had been destinationmalaysia

shifted to second and third-tier cities in China. Among the positive outcomes of the effort was the agreement for Hubei Wanda New Airlines Travel Services to offer thrice-weekly Wuhan-Kuala Lumpur charter services for the duration of one year. Discussions are also underway for Air China to resume its direct flights from Beijing to Kuala Lumpur. YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Ng says, “The turning point to our promotional efforts came when YAB Prime Minister of Malaysia visited China in late May. His visit was essential to further strengthen government and tourism relations between the two countries at a critical juncture.” Tourism Malaysia has since gone into full promotion gear in China by organising FIT (Free Independent Tourist) seminars in Xian, Wuhan, Chengdu and Xiamen; supporting the Malaysia Inbound Tourism Association (MITA) with their B2B seminar with China travel agencies; and organising familiarisation trips to Malaysia for C-trip travel agents in Shanghai. Tourism Malaysia is also working with AirAsia and AirAsia X on a tactical campaign in the second half of the year to promote Malaysia among the family, couples and singles segments.

SOARING TOURIST ARRIVALS IN MALAYSIA Tourism Malaysia’s aggressive promotional efforts in line with the celebration of Visit Malaysia Year 2014 yielded encouraging tourism performances. Malaysia welcomed a total of 7.09 million (7,091,433) tourists for the first quarter of 2014, registering a hike of 10% compared to 6.45 million (6,449,398) tourists for the same period last year. The top 10 tourist generating markets to Malaysia from January to March 2014 were Singapore (3,548,301), Indonesia (676,328), China (520,466), Thailand (333,131), Brunei (296,119), India (172,899), Australia (156,662), Japan (149859), the Philippines (144,932), and the United Kingdom (125,814). The ASEAN region continued to be the largest contributor of tourist arrivals with 72.1% share (5.1 million) of Malaysia’s total arrivals. Among ASEAN countries, Vietnam registered the highest growth of 30.1%, followed by Thailand (+20.9%), Cambodia (+12.6%), the Philippines (+10.3%) and Singapore (+10.2%). The medium-haul markets contributed 20.1% or 1.4 million tourists to Malaysia’s total arrivals. Countries that registered double-digit growth were South Korea (+37.1%), Saudi Arabia (+21.4%), Australia (+19.2%), New Zealand (+14.6%) and India (+11.2%). A total of 0.5 million tourists or 7.9% of Malaysia’s total arrivals were contributed by the long-haul markets. The markets that posted double-digit growth were Russia (25.3%), Italy (18.3%), France (17.5%), Germany (15%), USA (12%), the Netherlands (11.8%) and Canada (10.4%).

MALAYSIA, THE PERFECT FAMILY GETAWAY Last year Malaysia won the title for Best Family Destination at the Lonely Planet Travel Awards held in Mumbai. Malaysia was one of the shortlisted nominees by an expert panel that was chosen by winners as the prime destination for family travels. Whether it may be shopping, adventures, theme parks or even golf, Malaysia can cater to the preferences of every member of a family. The Director of Tourism Malaysia India Manoharan Periasamy who received the award on behalf of Malaysia said the award was a significant recognition of Malaysia’s accomplishment in promoting the country as one of the leading family destinations in the Southeast Asia region. “The rapid development of various theme parks and children entertainment centres in Malaysia such as Legoland, Puteri Harbour Family Theme Park, Kidzania, and i-City, to name a few, is a testament to the fact,” he said.

The Art of Silat

MARTIAL ART IS NOT DEAD. WE LOOK INTO ITS PLACE IN OUR MODERN SOCIETY AND HOW IT IMPACTS OUR LIVES. Professor, Doctor, Ajarn, Pendita, Grandmaster, Maha Guru. These are some of the honorifics used to address martial artist, Dr. Jak Othman. He is the man behind Bladetech at Jak Othman’s Kickboxing & Martial Arts Studio (JOKMAS). Hailing from an ancestry of pendekar, Dr. Othman’s training goes as far back as his childhood. “As a child, it was very difficult in a context where you’d be bullied but you can’t fight back” he said. “It was very difficult times with a lot of restraint.”

HERITAGE

Dr. Othman’s knowledge and skill in the disciplines he had acquired over the years is as dense, thoroughly and turbulent as history owes it. His ancestry was the stuff of legends. The silat discipline he holds till date relates to a clan called the Harimau Berantai, which derived its fame from the ferocity of the Javanese Pendekar known as the ‘pious tiger’ who fought the Dutch in Indonesia during the 1700s. “By the time I hit my 20s, I had the privilege of studying under the direct teaching of my aunt, Maha Guru Srikandi Hajah Ramintan Samingon,” Dr. Othman explains. “This was the time when I accumulated my knowledge in the weaponry commonly found in silat.” Dr. Othman is also one of the few martial artist that retain the knowledge on the art of silat Tomoi, prominently practiced on the east coast of Malaysia, which he had acquired in his teenage years under the tutelage of Ajarn Baka, a Thai fighter. Till date, Dr. Othman’s prominence remains strong even in the UK as many regard him as the father of British and Irish Silat. But herein lays the question of the practicality of martial arts in the urban society. “Outside the gym, in terms of a fight it’s a 50/50 chance of efficacy” he reveals, “But when it comes to fitness and more importantly self-defense, it is significantly relevant. I had one of my students hospitalize an offender in the past.” Recreation is commodity whose demand has grown exponentially as cities in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. While some citizens would have probably settled on predominant options such as badminton or cycling, there are others who would prefer something that steps out of the lines of convention and into things like JOKMAS. Martial art has a stem that reaches towards varied roots that provides extended and more personal appeals. There’s not only ethnicity, but there is scientific, cultural and historical drives behind the practice of silat, muay thai and blade combat that provides a channel of education and honor that can satiate any curious souls. “The discipline (kickboxing) here is presented as a means of protection of oneself from physical harm externally and internally. Our programs range from general fitness to rape prevention. Everyone has their place here.” “I rebranded the muay thai in my gym for the lifestyle we can observe around us today” says Dr. Othman when asked about his teaching methods. “Progression is only natural but I make it a point that they hit as hard from the day they begin.” Every kick delivered and every jab thrown can be heard from meters away as the echoes of sand bags and shields resonate through the halls of the gym and down the staircase. “When the muay

thai session is up, students clean up and make way for the silat session.” Don’t be so surprised if you find veteran practitioners like Guru Ed Chards coming up for silat practice or Guru Scott McQuaid in Bladetech. In addition, the acclaim of Dr. Othman’s gym has yet to be triumped, with multiple kick and punch records in the Malaysia Book of Records that have yet to be broken after many years. “Nobody has thus far, dared to challenge us”, Dr. Othman jokingly says. There is a strong standard and culture that is held in the gym. “Out there, we are on our own but in here, we’re like a family.” Presently, Dr. Othman is also involved in an international collaboration with Asia Pacific Open University as a lecturer in martial arts and member of senate. “Presently we offer diplomas and degrees in both Kickboxing and Bladetech. “In each course, students will be endowed with a wealth of knowledge from sports science, business along with a plethora of electives” says Dr. Othman. “Martial art is something that can become mainstream. It helps improve a person both physically and mentally. It expands further into commerce and creates greater prospects for any discerning practitioner, enthusiast or novice.” Jak Othman’s Kickboxing & Martial Arts Studio (JOKMAS) is open every day except Sundays and public holidays from 6pm to 10pm with Silat classes only on Wednesday and Friday nights at 8pm to 10pm. New members will receive a pair of gloves, hand wraps, a t-shirt and a pair of pants. destinationmalaysia

Thrilling Adventure Awaits A trip to Legoland is like a taking a Bonneville ride down memory lane. It’s both thrilling and nostalgic to see your favourite bricks supersized into an actual theme park and hotel. The fun begins as soon as you enter the lobby with moats of over 100,000 bricks around pillars.

V

arious models are hung from the ceiling adding a dynamic ambience to the overall experience. Lego exhibits are displayed both in glass cases and in life sizes and they can be found littered across the entire premise, even in the restaurant. The Legoland Resort in Johor is Asia’s very first, with over 70 different rides, slides and other attractions. These attractions are all contained in one location with three different entities; the Theme Park, the Water Park, and the Hotel. The Theme Park is divided into seven themed areas with thrilling rides, Lego workshops and of course the Minilands. The Minilands takes some of the most interesting landscapes, countries and landmarks and recreates them as miniatures using Lego bricks. In August 2014, Legoland observed the addition of Star Wars Miniland into their already destinationmalaysia

Besides the Miniland, the Theme Park consists of five other components; Lego Kingdom, Imagination, Land of Adventure, Lego Technic and Lego City. The Kingdom and a medieval settings houses several must-see attractions. The Dragon is a roller coaster that has all the twist and turns for thrill seekers. There is also a stage where there are shows held daily and of course, a Royal Joust that puts children on medieval Lego horses. Imagination, otherwise, the Build and Test Centres, are for those who enjoy experimenting and building and inventions can be tested on various platforms. There is also an Observation Tower that lifts a thousand visitors every hour to a vantage point 41m above the ground for a panoramic view of the park. Lego Studios is a 4D movie adventure that seats up to 500 people at a given time. The Land of Adventure has a little something for laser tag fans called the Lost Kingdoms. Kids looking for a thrill can be brought to the Beetle Bounce with a pleasant surprise. Thrill seekers will also be interested in Lego Technic which houses

yet another brilliant roller coaster called Project X that’s ridden with tight corners and a wave surf called the Aquazone Wave Racers. Finally, we have Lego City where children are allowed to take the wheel. There is the Driving School that allows first-hand experience of real-life traffic rules. Speeds go up to 6km/h and children are in complete control of their own vehicles. There’s also the shipyard that can produce fun for parents as well. The Water Park in Legoland, Johor is the biggest in the world with over 20 unique rides that has all the works; slides waves, wade, pools and water-play structures. One of their signature rides is called Built-A-Raft River where kids could build their own raft using soft bricks and then float down the river. And there’s just as many Lego models to go around and snap photos. Rest assured, there are also private lockers for guest to store their belongings when enjoying the Water Park, as well as a Private Cabanas that can be rented by guests who want a shaded space of their own. Each Cabana is accompanied by complementary towels, drinks and a host to assist with food orders. There are 249 rooms in the Lego Hotel with three different themes; Pirate, Kingdom and Adventure, with the Pirate themed rooms being deluxe rooms and Kingdoms being exclusive suites. All rooms come with a king-sized bed for the adults and a sleeping area for up to three children, with the typical favourites like bunk beds and pull-out trundle beds. The hotel is equipped with a plethora of facilities including a retail outlet, public prayer rooms, handicap friendly guestrooms, luggage storage and free Wi-Fi for guests. The park is open all year round with standard operating hours of 10am to 6pm for the theme parks. Options for passes includes 1-day tickets, 2-day tickets as well as attractive annual passes. There are two types of annual passes priced attractively and would provide unlimited access to theme parks all year round.

impressive collection of displays. The display was launched in conjunction with the 2nd anniversary of the resort, with over 2000 Lego models built from approximately 1.5 million bricks. Each model is recreated to a scale of 1:20 by a team of 100 people from across the world and is animated, requiring just a touch of a button to bring them to life. Each cluster in Miniland is a tribute to different cities across Asia including Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Singapore. For example, there is the Petronas Twin Towers that stands 10 meters tall and its made out of half a million bricks.

Volunteer While On Holiday Text by: Lira Jamaluddin Photo: Juara Turtle Project destinationmalaysia

If spending two weeks on an island sipping coconut juice and swimming in the crystal clear waters of Malaysia isn’t enough excitement for your holiday. Visit the Juara Turtle Project in Tioman where they offer a holiday stay while you can be a volunteer in Turtle conservation. This holiday requires some real work, so get ready to help out. We spoke to the experts at The Juara Turtle Project to get an insight into what goes on at Juara Turtle Project.

SOUTH SIDE

bit about them. The Juara turtle project is run by a foreigner, a Malaysian director and a marine biologist. The project was started by non-scientists as a conservation effort, and not for scientific study.

1. Tell us a little bit about the efforts Juara Tutle Project is taking in the conservation of turtles? We talk with visitors and volunteers here. We speak to the state government and departments like Marine Parks and Fisheries, local government and the community members to try and educate, coordinate and inform them about turtle issues and their needs. 2. Who are the people behind the Juara Turtle project? Tell us a little

21

5. What experience/education will volunteers leave with after spending some time at the Juara Turtle Project volunteering? It depends on the individual. Some people learn a lot about responsibility and how to take care of what they do, how it affects other people and the world around them. Volunteers learn about the turtles and about the methods we use to help them.

3. How do you become a volunteer for the Juara Turtle project? Is there a minimum age? To volunteer check out more information on our website and get in touch with us. The minimum age we accept is 16, but they must be accompanied by a friend, unless they are 18 years and above. Families of all ages are welcome. 4. What type of volunteers usually visit the Juara Turtle Project? Tourists and people with specific interested in turtles.

HOW TO GET THERE Bus Take a bus to Mersing. You must use the bus terminal with buses going to Mersing, Johor or Tioman. From Mersing take the ferry to Kg. Tekek in Tioman (ferry times are approx 7am, 11am, 2pm, 4pm). When you arrive in Tioman via ferry, get off at the Tekek stop. From Kg Tekek, get a taxi or walk to Kg. Juara and the Turtle Project. Taxi cost is about RM70, or RM30 per person. Let us know when you are arriving and we can help to arrange a taxi, or may be in Kg. Tekek ourselves.

WHAT TO EXPECT

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Turtles nest here starting in March and April, peaking in June, July August, and then finished by November. Research about Sea turtle conservation before you come here so you can be familiar with the conservation issues sea turtles face here on Tioman and world-wide. JTP is different than a hostel, as they have activities and work which they expect you want to get involved in. However JTP is different than an all-inclusive program, as they don’t plan activities for your whole day- They need your help. JTP has a minimum stay requirement of 4 nights; otherwise the time is not enough to be very useful.

The project facility and volunteering program is free and open. There are lots of work to do, but take your time to get comfortable with the location, materials and methods before trying to save all the sea turtle. When you arrive you will have an orientation that explains almost everything about the project and your time here.

If this is something you are interested in let JTP know before you come so you can start to developing your ideas together. If you are a short-term volunteer here (few days to a few weeks) then you can just help us out in whatever is needed to get done on a daily basis. In addition to the conservation work this can include: taking care of the resident blind Green turtle, keeping facilities clean, gardening, maintenance, construction, giving turtle talks to the general public, and more. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW JTP cannot guarantee Sea Turtles. If you want to easily see and photograph turtles it is advise for your to go snorkeling, scuba diving, or to the aquarium. At JTP, you can help here and possibly see a turtle, but maybe after 30 years of hard work the natural population will rejuvenate and we can all just go stand by the beach to watch the turtles. JTP love turtles where they are, and love to leave them alone. Conservation is about protecting nature and its various ecosystems, to give it the opportunity to live and grow (evolve) on its own. Conservation has nothing to do with people seeing animals and plants, but seeing these things is a wonderful side effect of conservation.

The Bario Highlands

A TICKET TO TRANQUILITY

Miri

Bario

B

liss is the heart of Bario. It is a secluded location just east of Miri and behind the Mulu forest, a perfect place to get away from it all and live life. You won’t find internet reception here, except for a telecenter near the airport, electricity is scarce, there’s only one convenience store that doubles as a bar and pool parlor and none of the conventions of cities will be found here such as restaurants, retail stores and ATMs. This is as far as getting cutoff from the world as you can get without smothering yourself. But on a different perspective, this may very well be your annual vacation and the most wholesome experience you can get. destinationmalaysia

So how would you survive this ‘ordeal’ and what is there to do in a place where you’re not staring at one of four different screens? Here’s how you can make the most of one of the best places to escape the bedlam of the urban lifestyle. A LOFTY GETAWAY There are plenty of homestays and guesthouse in Bario but the best one has to be the Ngimat Ayu Homestay. It is a family run homestay five bedrooms that can accommodate up to 9 people. The owner, Scott, is the man in charge of keeping the place together and getting you to wherever you need. There is a little garden in his homestay that has almost everything you’d want to cook in the kitchen. “The weather here is fitting enough. We grow our own rosemary, dill and parsley among other things. We just started planting potatoes and they’re coming along nicely”, he said. There’s no air conditioning, no water heaters and no fans here. At night, you might need a jacket when you are out on the patio and you will be snuggled up in the comforter by the time you get to bed. The rate is RM95 per head per night, with breakfast, lunches and dinners inclusive. There will be an additional charge for a personal guide. “Some of our guests have decided against a guide in the past but we highly recommend one. Our people know the forest well and will be able to get you to wherever you need. The last incident we heard from a neighboring manager only saw his guest a week later, they were lost in the forest,” Scott explains. There are also packaged deals for people coming in groups. Bario is an advantageous place to explore with friends and family and it is highly recommend having at least a partner when visiting. Transport destinationmalaysia

options will either be on foot or on a four-wheel drive and the day starts as early as 6.15am and ends by 6.30pm by which would perceptibly be nautical twilight. DISCOVER THE LINEAGE The tours will take you to some of the oldest and more recent longhouses in Bario. Here you will discover how the Kelabit people go about their daily lives. In one of the longhouse you will notice portraits of people hung on the walls both old and new. One of the guides had mentioned, “The Kelabit people are highly literate and many have accomplished many things be it academically or professionally.” You just might find a portrait of Idris Jala when he was a little chap here. And these longhouses are not identical. Some are build differently from others. One may have the kitchens in the front, the rooms in-between and the communal hall at the back and the other may integrate both the communal hall and kitchen and put the rooms on the other side. And here, you will discover the philosophies of each Kelabit home and how the communal life is carried out. There are stocks of firewood in each kitchen and stocks of water in containers. One of the guides had mentioned, “Food is prepared very naturally here and water pressure may be low so usage is very conservative.” Wait till you taste it, its revolutionary. In the past, Kelabit men would get earrings or stretch their ears and women would get tattoos. There is plenty to learn about the Kelabit people destinationmalaysia

while you’re here so we’ll just leave you with a teaser of what to expect. GO TO THE SOURCE Bario is home to Adan rice, a superior grain that’s highly sought after by health enthusiasts and affluent members of society. The rice is the staple food and trade commodity in Bario and you will find paddy fields everywhere while you’re here. If you’re lucky you will be able to observe how it is done, either planting or harvesting. Another key commodity here would be Bario salt. The journey to a salt spring is part of the adventure and is well worth it if you have never gone jungle trekking before. There are multiple salt springs in the forests of Bario and there are shacks built around next springs with multiple boiling pots to process it. The trek may take between an hour and a half depending on your pace. Bario salt is not as strong as the conventional store bought ones but its mineral content is known to be highly nourishing. Then of course there are the pineapples. While diminutive in size, these pineapples are naturally sweet. Their acidity is not as prominent and has plenty of juice in it. Occasionally the sweetness might be overwhelming and this is easily neutralized with a splash of sweet soy sauce with a pinch of chilies. As absurd as it sounds, it is an experience worth noting. There are wild For more information on the Ngimat Ayu Homestay, call Scott at 013-840 6187

pineapples growing in some parts of the forest and if they are ripe, it’s as easy as pluck, cut and eat. Along the way you could occasionally find wild mangosteens as well. ADMIRE YOUR SURROUNDINGS Bario is very laidback and as the adage goes, “when in Rome, do as the Romans do.” Kick back and loosen up. Take in the sights and appreciate how nature can work wonders when you come back to basics. The dogs and cats here are far friendlier than the ones you would find in cities. They are very approachable and often times more affectionate than they should be. You’ll find the cats here have marginally thicker fur and are fleshy but very lean. This can be attributed to the cold weather as well as the natural state of food sources. And if you go deeper into the forests, you will find even the ants are bigger. A guide had mentioned that the spiked-ants in the forests of Bario can grow beyond 30mm. You will also find plenty of flowers here growing naturally in homes and the forests with very bright colours. Among them there is also a species of orchids. Besides flowers, with the right people, you might discover some of the staple vegetables, herbs and leaves that are eaten locally. There are plenty of plants that can be picked in the forest both for consumption and aromatic purposes. As always, practice caution as some branches can give a serious rash while others could cut you. AUTHENTICALLY ETHNIC If you do get the opportunity, you could visit one of the oldest longhouses with a family whom are descendents of the original Sape players and Kelabit dancers.

asparagus and bamboo that’s grown here and has a far more distinctive taste. Coupled with the Kelabit style of cooking, it is easily one of the more delectable culinary experiences.

Guests are welcomed with a pineapple, with a straw in it, and greeted by the head of the house. Food is then placed on hemp mats and the guests are invited to dine with the Kelabit people. There is a different breed of chives,

You will also be graced with a performance by the local dancers both male and female. Male dancers would just wear a vest whereas female dancers will have a more elaborate outfit. Occasionally you will hear cheering; this is an encouragement between family members. Guests will also be invited to dance with them.

HOW DO WE GET THERE?

WHAT’S IT LIKE THERE?

You can’t go to Bario on a conventional flight. There’s a specific plane that will take you there called the Twin Otter. There’s very limited seating but there are three flights to Bario a day.

The ingredients here are also very natural and fresh as it’s either grown or hunted. Only a few commodities are imported in Bario.

Our team rode with AirAsia from Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2) to Miri Airport in Sarawak. This took approximately two hours and a half. We had booked a prior flight under MASwings from Miri to Bario. So, from Miri Airport, we boarded the Twin Otter heading to Bario. The trip took less than an hour.

A staple meat here is either chicken or deer. The deer they serve in Bario is very gamy and it’s lean yet tender. The way the Kelabit serve vegetables here is easy on your teeth. Almost every kind of vegetable is minced besides the ferns. There isn’t a specific flavor that belongs to the Kelabit people; they make everything their own in a way. They can fry chicken with ginger and bamboo shoots but they could also do deer in a more distinct and delectable version of curry. Kelabit people have a highly evolved palate and it’s a taste it to believe it scenario. While it may be different, you’d feel right at home. destinationmalaysia

Harvest Festival in East Malaysia The Harvest festival or locally known as Hari Gawai is one of the major festivals celebrated in Sabah and Sarawak. Taking place from the 30-31st May this year, this festival is particularly celebrated by the indigenous groups of East Malaysia. It is both a religious and social occasion as this festival marks the end of the harvesting season and it is a festival filled with much singing and dancing as they start a new farming season. This major celebration sees those who work in the city return to their village for the annual celebrations. A month prior to Hari Gawai, most of the locals would prepare the tuak or rice wine. This famous, not-to-be-missed concoction is made of glutinous rice collected from the recent harvest mixed with homemade yeast and is left for fermentation. The inside walls of the longhouse may be decorated with "ukir" pictorial murals with tree and

wild animal motifs. The Orang Ulu is famous for their colourful paintings of the tree of life on their house walls and their house posts are elaborately-carved. Some men will get traditional tattoos on their bodies to signify their adventures and experiences with land and marine life motifs in time for the Gawai. Highly decorated shields may be made and displayed near the family room door. Old human skulls obtained during headhunting raids, if still kept, are cleaned and shown for exposition. Heirloom jars may be cleaned for exhibition. Deer horns may be hung on the longhouse posts to hang highly decorated swords and other household items. Although officially it is only a two-day public holiday, the celebration often goes on continuously for over a fortnight. If you have never visited East Malaysia, this is definitely a good time to visit and have a taste of its local culture and be a part of the festivity.

Balung Tea Plantation We speak to Natasha Mohammad, the Marketing Director of Balung Plantation. The plantation and Eco resort located in Balung is about 6000 acres in size. The Plantation started by her grandfather has been in Natasha’s family for decades. We get an insight into her family, and how she spent her time in Balung as a child. Natasha has helped grown the family owned plantation into a recognized brand of locally produced tea products.

Photo: Balung Tea Plantation

1. Did you visit Balung as a child? Yes, I visited Balung as a child since as long as I can remember. Most of the family was overseas when we were growing up, but every holiday we would make it a point to go back to Sabah and visit our grandparents. My grandfather will make it a point to visit Balung with his children and grandchildren. He wanted us to be close to nature, and appreciate the plantation which he built for the family. 2. What are some fond memories of Balung you shared with your family? The plantation is something my grandfather built from nothing, to where Balung is today. He always wanted us to learn and appreciate what he had built and what he was giving us. He wanted us to understand the dynamics of the business and how it works. He didn’t just take us for a visit, but he would make us understand the whole ecosystem of the plantation. One of my fond memories in Balung would be learning to drive a tractor; we were around 10-11 years old me and my cousins. Every day after breakfast at 8am, we will follow our grandfather and do our rounds around the plantation. It will take about two hours to visit the entire plantation, after that we would rest, have lunch and do our own activities. At around 4pm, we would do another round, we will check out the factories, look at the plants and talk to the workers. I remembered that my grandfather would always make us hug the trees, since we were young, then he would say see now you can hug it, in another three years it will be too big and you won’t be able to hug it. He would always teach us in his own way, so that we can feel the growth of the trees as time passes by, because sometimes you can’t remember it, but once you hug it, it stays instilled in your memory. True enough the trees grew over the years, and we can no longer wrap our arms around the trees. This plantation is passed on to the family. That is why my grandfather wanted us to know as much as possible about this plantation because he said that one day it will be yours. destinationmalaysia

3. How much of a role does Balung Plantation play in producing tea products? Balung products are grown, produced, manufactured and packaged in Balung. From the plantation to the factory, it’s only a 5 minutes’ drive apart. Everything is done in Balung. The whole family runs various roles in the plantation, I head the marketing of Balung tea products. We export the tea to China, Japan and the UK. What I am trying to do now is break into the Malaysian market. 4. Tell us about the Balung Eco Resort? The Balung Eco Resort was created by my grandfather; it started off with the family needing a base every time we visited Balung. We needed somewhere comfortable to stay the night. He loved having his family, grandchildren and friends over in Balung. So he built a house there, and then it continued on to an Eco Resort. The architecture of the Resort is very unique; some of the accommodations are built using river rocks which he collected from the nearby rivers. It’s eco-friendly; there is a fish pond, a restaurant and swimming pool made from river water.

30 THINGS TO DO IN BALUNG • Relax at the mini-waterfalls of the natural riverside spa, get a massage after a day out jungle trekking. • Witness how aromatic oils are distilled from vetiver and patchouli, the base scents for hundreds of perfumes.

• Learn how they cultivate teak and agarwood trees sustainably, so fewer old-growth rainforest trees are cut down. • Go birdwatching in the jungle for a glimpse of wonderful treeswifts, babblers, loras and kingfishers. • Watch how the famous Balung teas are hand-picked, manufactured, and produced for consumers.

5. What activities are there to explore in Balung? It’s back to nature and there are so many activities on offer. You can learn how things are processed, for example you can see how honey is made or you can watch and learn how the workers do rubber tapping on trees. You can follow the process of the tea products from farm to having a cup of tea. You can go fishing, jungle trekking, explore the various species of plants, swim by the river and take in the beautiful scenery. Being in Balung allows you to go back to nature and enjoy the simple things in life. The telephone networks aren’t very good so you will be disconnected from social media, which will force you to communicate with the people and its surroundings. 6. With the recent healthy eating movement, do you think people are more open to trying herbal products? I think recently people are becoming more aware of what they are consuming, and what it does to their body. People want to know if the foods they are consuming are beneficial to their health or not. I think it is easier to market Balung products now than before, because people are now taking a conscious effort to be healthy and try to consume products that are beneficial to their health. Balung products consist of tea, what I’m trying to do is to educate people to drink Balung tea instead of normal tea which brings you no health benefits. It tastes almost the same as normal tea, so you might as well change to Balung tea as there are health benefits. It shouldn’t be a product where people consume only when they have a health issue like bloating. It should be a lifestyle, and consumed daily. We have 3 different types of tea, lemongrass, Misai Kuching and Agarwood tea. 7. How does Balung Plantation give back to the society? In Balung Plantation we have our own community; we have our own mosque, football field and public areas for residents. We also have a building dedicated to the Humana Child Aid Society, which houses a school for the children of the people who work in the plantation, and also serves as a school for those without proper identification and certificates to apply to a school. The Humana Child Aid Society provides basic education to more than 12,000 children in plantations and other remote areas. destinationmalaysia

BALUNG TEAS Balung Plantation produces three types of tea, each with its own unique health benefits. Balung Agarwood Tea or Teh Gaharu (Aquilaria malaccensis) A very rare tea made from the leaves of the famed agarwood tree. Its delicate, sweet flavor makes agarwood tea ideal for sipping after dinner or a special meal. And because it’s caffeine-free, agarwood tea won’t keep you awake at night. • 100% pure and organic herbal tea • Grown using sustainable farming methods • Exotic alternative to traditional herbal teas • Caffeine-free • Mild laxative with no side effects Balung Java Tea or Misai Kucing (Orthosiphon stamineus) Java tea plants are known for their delicate white-andblue blossoms that look like cat’s whiskers. But Balung

Java Tea is made from the leaves, which contain more health-boosting nutrients. • 100% pure and organic herbal tea • Mild diuretic that helps flush away kidney and urinary tract infections • Clean smooth taste • Caffeine-free Balung Lemongrass Tea or Serai Tea (Cymbopogon citratus) Start the day with a cup of refreshing lemongrass tea and you’ll start the day with a smile. • 100% pure and organic herbal tea • Famous for its warming citrus flavor • Exotic alternative to peppermint and camomile teas • Caffeine-free • May aid digestion • Mild diuretic action helps flush out toxins
