Uniquely Melbourne It’s always helpful to get some local insights about the quirks and character that make Melbourne the city it is. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you fit in with the locals. HOOK TURNS Don’t be alarmed. Due to tramlines running down the middle of major city streets, there are some intersections where cars turning right must do so from the left lane. The vehicle remains there until the traffic lights for the road it’s entering turn green, then it carefully executes its turn. This manoeuvre minimises congestion on the roads. Hook turns are rare and not nearly as scary as they sound. »» onlymelbourne.com.au/hook-turns SPORTS PRECINCT During summer it seems all the major sporting events come to town. Here, creative director and proud Melburnian Robert Buckingham shares his favourite local places. RESTAURANT: Lao’s Family Kitchen. As a St Kilda local this is one of my favourites, and I’ve been eating here for the past 10 years. BAR: The Carlton. I love the rooftop and the terrace. As a venue, it’s also continually evolving – there are often exhibitions and, with its different levels, it’s like its own little cultural centre. CAFÉ: I love Gertrude Street Enoteca. It’s got a nice little courtyard, and I really like the people it attracts. It’s an intergenerational melting pot. HIDDEN SECRET: The Grainger Museum, on Royal Parade in the University of Melbourne. It’s dedicated to Percy Grainger, who was a composer, artist and musician. He was one of those quirky characters, alongside Barry Humphries and Leigh Bowery, Melbourne produces only once in a generation. UPCOMING MPAVILION EVENT: Msync is a fullmoon party scheduled for 24 January. It’s sure to be a lot of fun!

Sink Your Teeth In Hungry? Thirsty? Melbourne’s got you covered with restaurants, cafés, pubs and bars everywhere you look. Your mouth and stomach will love you forever. NEW BITES ON THE BLOCK Melbourne’s culinary landscape is shifting all the time, with new restaurants opening regularly. Less than a year old, Chow City is a sleek pan-Asian restaurant that’s sure to have your tastebuds hopping with delight. In a hip, industrial space in always-cool Fitzroy, the folks behind local favourite, Vegie Bar, have opened Transformer. Chef Luke Florence is changing the stereotype of vegetarian and vegan meals, turning out dishes of complexity and flavour that will satisfy even the most committed carnivore. »» Chow City, 287 Exhibition Street chowcity.com.au »» Transformer, 99 Rose Street, Fitzroy transformerfitzroy.com

DINING ON THE GO Want a dining experience that truly reflects Melbourne’s laidback attitude? Track down the food trucks that make their way around the city and inner suburbs. Tasty snack in hand, find a park and eat your meal in the sunshine. Aside from a couple of semi-permanent food truck parks in the northern suburbs of Thornbury and Preston, your best chance to find outlets like Mr Burger, Dos Diablos Mobile Cantina and White Guy Cooks Thai is to visit their websites. »» Mr Burger mrburger.com.au »» Dos Diablos Mobile Cantina dosdiablos.com.au Transformer, Fitzroy

One Melbourne food craze not going anywhere is the previously humble donut. Here’s where some of the best in town can be found.

SHORT STOP
Located at the top end of the city, Short Stop pairs artisanal donuts like Australian honey and sea salt or peanut butter caramel and chocolate with specialty roasted coffee. The results are, predictably, excellent. »» 12 Sutherland Street short-stop.com.au

WAY UP HIGH Another favourite Melbourne pastime is to sit back with a drink at one of the city’s rooftop bars and watch the sun go down over the skyscrapers. Goldilocks Bar has quickly established a reputation as a top spot for cocktails and tasty bar snacks. Enter via Noodle Kingdom and you’ll enjoy table service in a relaxed atmosphere. Rooftop Bar, just next door, is even higher up, and the view and lively atmosphere more than make up for the seven flights of stairs you’ll climb to reach it if you don’t want to queue for the lift. From December to April, the bar is also home to Rooftop Cinema, so check out what films are showing under the stars while you’re in town.
SWEET EVELYN
If you love sweet treats and find yourself in Brunswick, north of the city centre, you’ll kick yourself if you don’t try one of Sweet Evelyn’s delicious donuts or cakes. You can also get breakfast all day. »» 128 Union Street, Brunswick sweetevelyn.com.au

Melbourne Culture Prepare to expand your mind at some of Melbourne’s most thought-provoking and challenging cultural experiences. A DAY AT THE MUSEUM Spend some time exploring some of Melbourne’s most enticing archives. The Melbourne Museum is an obvious highlight, with a host of permanent exhibitions on show for visitors. Discover how Melbourne evolved over 600 million years, learn about Phar Lap, Australia’s most famous racehorse, and see jaw-dropping dinosaur skeletons. For a different perspective on life in Australia, the Immigration Museum is a must. Focusing on the stories of real people from across the globe who now call Victoria home, the museum re-creates their stories for everyone to explore and enjoy. »» Melbourne Museum 11 Nicholson Street, Carlton museumvictoria.com.au/melbournemuseum »» Immigration Museum, 400 Flinders Street museumvictoria.com.au/immigrationmuseum
The Corner Hotel, Richmond
READY TO ROCK? Historically, summer in Australia sees an army of international musicians tour, and the best of them always end up here in Melbourne. Better than that, though, is the fact that with world-class venues all over the city and spread throughout the suburbs, the local music scene has never been stronger. If you’re looking for a last-minute gig in Melbourne, Cherry Bar and The Tote are renowned for their local rock ’n’ roll offerings. Alternatively, for more highprofile Australian and international acts, try legendary Richmond venue The Corner Hotel or the more intimate Northcote Social Club. »» Cherry Bar, AC/DC Lane cherrybar.com.au »» The Tote Hotel 67-71 Johnston Street, Collingwood thetotehotel.com »» The Corner Hotel, 57 Swan Street, Richmond cornerhotel.com

Look A Little Farther Break free of the city centre and explore more of Melbourne. You’re sure to create memories on your adventures. SOUTH BEACHES… Melbourne has a number of fun, family-friendly beaches, and the majority of them lie along the eastern shore of Port Phillip Bay, south of the city centre. St Kilda Beach is Melbourne’s playground in the summer, and St Kilda Sea Baths plays host to plenty of action, with dining and drinking options for day and night. »» St Kilda Sea Baths, 10/18 Jacka Boulevard, St Kilda stkildaseabaths.com.au …AND BREAKFAST Many of Melbourne’s grandest houses sit in the affluent bayside suburbs, so it’s unsurprising that great cafés are close by to cater for their residents. The Petty Officer, in Albert Park, was a trailblazer when it first arrived in the area in 2012, with its focus on quality coffee and a menu where everything (except the bread) is made on site.

WEST OUTDOORS ACTIVITIES… Melbourne’s west is brimming with life. If the weather calls for a stroll through one of the city’s most peaceful gardens, Werribee Mansion & Park is the place to be. Recline under one of the giant trees, or explore Melbourne’s pastoral history in the heritagelisted mansion. If you’d prefer something a little more adventurous, the 420 hectares of artificial and natural lagoons of Cheetham Wetlands is for you. As you walk the flat, 1.2 kilometre path, look out for migratory birds travelling from as far as Japan and Siberia. It feels a lifetime away from the city skyscrapers.
…AND FAMILY FUN Ask almost any local where you should take your kids and they’ll say Scienceworks. Just a short 15-minute train ride from the city centre, a visit to this interactive museum in the suburb of Spotswood will result in smiles all round. Entry for children 16 years and younger is always free, and it’s especially popular during school holidays. »» Scienceworks Museum 2 Booker Street, Spotswood museumvictoria.com.au/scienceworks

EAST SHOPPING… The suburbs to the east of the city centre, including South Yarra and Armadale, are at the fore of suburban style. South Yarra’s Chapel Street and High Street in Armadale are home to countless boutiques, where Melbourne’s fashionable set are always seen wearing the latest in designer gear and accessories. For a different type of retail experience, visit Chadstone, the largest shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s dubbed the Fashion Capital, and is just the spot to become completely absorbed in the surrounding glamour, with designer labels alongside more budget-conscious options. There’s a free shuttle bus to and from Federation Square seven times a day – see the website for more details.
…AND ANIMALS One of the most popular family destinations for Melbourne families is the Collingwood Children’s Farm in Abbotsford. Let the kids get up close and personal with a range of farmyard favourites, while you enjoy the on-site Farm Café. On the second Saturday of each month it also welcomes a farmers’ market – one of the most popular in Australia – where you can get all the fresh produce you need for your stay. »» Collingwood Children’s Farm 18 St Heliers Street, Abbotsford farm.org.au

Don’t go past the boutique, family-run and authentic Italian restaurant Seasons Provedore, sure to delight your tastebuds.
…AND MORE FOOD One of the restaurants that put Gertrude Street in Fitzroy on the dining map is Cutler & Co. Housed in an old metalworks factory, it was opened in 2009 with renowned chef Andrew McConnell at the helm. Sovereign Hill The dynamic events, personalities and dramas that helped carve Australia’s rugged history are played out at Sovereign Hill 364 days a year.
S
overeign Hill is a living museum that tells the story of the world’s richest alluvial gold rush.
When you visit, make sure you take a horse-and-coach ride around the town and watch the Redcoat Soldiers march and fire their muskets on the parade ground. Try your hand at panning for real gold (it’s finderskeepers), witness an amazing $150,000 gold pour and ride the tram deep underground for a mine tour adventure. ‘Journey through the Labyrinth of Gold’ takes you deep into the world of 19th-century gold mining. ‘Trapped’ is a dramatic presentation based on Australia’s worst-ever mining disaster, which happened at Creswick, near Ballarat, in 1882, and ‘The Secret Chamber’ is a story about the Chinese diggers who sought their fortunes on the Ballarat goldfields.
Main Street, Sovereign Hill
Make sure you allow time to visit the factories and workshops to see rare trades, such as wheelwrighting and candlemaking, in action. There are also shops, schools and cottages to visit. Your ticket to Sovereign Hill includes a free, secondday visit (conditions apply), and entry to the Gold Museum where you'll discover million dollar gold displays, plus exciting exhibitions. You can also ride the iconic W-class free City Circle Tram (number 35) that will take you on a historic tour of Melbourne’s CBD, complete with automated commentary. If you’re not familiar with driving in Victoria, make sure you review these road rules: • In Australia, cars travel on the left of the road.
Melbourne’s taxis are an easy and convenient way to get around. If you are planning to catch a taxi you can:
1
PRE-BOOK It is recommended that you book a taxi in advance. Consult your local phone directory, search online for taxi operators in your area, or use one of the many apps available.
2
• Speed is in km/h, not m/h, and speeding is illegal. Heavy fines are imposed if you are caught above the limit by police or speed cameras.
USE A TAXI RANK There are many taxi rank locations listed on the Melbourne City Map on page 140.
• Seat belts are compulsory in front and back seats. Children must be harnessed in a safety restraint.
3
• When turning right at an intersection you must always give way to vehicles travelling left and any pedestrians crossing the road. • Drivers are required to carry a licence at all times. International driver licences are acceptable for up to three months, however you will require a Victorian license after this period. Image (left): udeyismail / Shutterstock
HAIL A TAXI You can hail a taxi from a safe location on the side of the road. A taxi is available if its dome is fully lit, otherwise it is already booked. Fares for travelling in a taxi are detailed on the passenger fares sticker inside the taxi. You can also plan ahead by scanning the QR code below to estimate your taxi fare or visit the website below. »» taxi.vic.gov.au/fareestimator Twitter: @taxicommission FIND OUT MORE Scan this QR code to estimate your taxi fare
