What’s so FUNNY? One of the world’s premier comedy jamborees, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, is back and sure to have everyone rolling in the aisles. Melbourne Now’s Dylan Stewart tells us why this is quite possibly Melbourne’s favourite time of year.
You can sense it as you walk towards the Melbourne Town Hall, on the corner of bustling Swanston and Collins Streets. The autumn weather encourages a couple of late-afternoon drinks and a quick bite to eat in nearby Chinatown, before the giant chalkboard outside the Town Hall’s main entrance reveals the night’s real menu. Sure, you might already have tickets to one of this year’s headliners (think locals Wil Anderson, Judith Lucy and Sammy J & Randy, or internationals like Ross Noble, Rich Hall or David O’Doherty), but, if not, this is where your night begins. Catch an early show by Utopia’s Celia Pacquola, followed by another rising queen of Australian comedy, Mel Buttle, before Alex Williamson strips you of whatever morals you still possess with his politically incorrect brand of humour. Alternatively, pick a name you’ve never heard before from the board or take your cue from one of the comedians handing out flyers, and support the next generation of local comedy.

Everyone involved, from the performers to the audiences members, is in a great mood, and with laughter emanating from bars, pubs and theatres across Melbourne, you’ll want to come back to do it all again the next night – and probably the night after that, too.

Tom Ballard One of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s biggest stars chats to Melbourne Now about his show, Melbourne’s comedy scene and a few of his favourite things to do in town.
“ Melbourne is quite simply the home of Australian comedy,” Tom Ballard says from his Fitzroy North home, where he’s squirreled away for a day of writing jokes for this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Ballard is performing two shows at this year’s festival, starting with his stand-up performance, The World Keeps Happening. “I’ve also been given a grant to create a show that’s a little bit off the beaten track. I’m preparing a comedy lecture on Australia’s immigration policies called Boundless Plains to Share, where I’ll cover things like detention centres, boat people and all that kind of comedy gold.” During the festival, you’ll find comedians performing practically every night of the week. “There’s an older guard,” Ballard explains. “People like Judith Lucy, Denise Scott, Lawrence Mooney, Greg Fleet and Tony Martin, who are legends and huge figures in the game. Plus Dave O’Neil, who’s probably the most Melbourne dude you can get. “ Then there’s this entire new generation – people like Tommy Dassalo, Karl Chandler and Bart Freebairn. You’ve got venues like Spleen Bar [41 Bourke Street] on Mondays, Crab Lab [16 Corrs Lane] on Wednesdays, and open mic nights all over the place.”
To read the full interview with Tom Ballard, visit: melbnow.com.au/tomballard
TOM’S TIPS: BAR: I love Rooftop Bar [252 Swanston Street], which, to me, screams Melbourne. I always think of summer drinks on that rooftop whenever I think of a nice time. I also love Spleen Bar [41 Bourke Street] for the comedy, the friendships and the random weirdos who turn up. RESTAURANT: Hellenic Republic [434 Lygon Street, Brunswick
East] is where I once had the best thing I’ve ever eaten in my entire life, but it’s Melbourne, right? Take a random bet and walk in anywhere – chances are it’ll be good. VIEW: You can go up and around the side of Hamer Hall
[100 St Kilda Road] and end up on this incredible balcony that looks across the Yarra River to the city, the MCG and St Paul’s Cathedral. HIDDEN SECRET: Being based in Fitzroy North, I’m very close to Merri Creek. Walking around there is beautiful. You walk through bushland and easily forget that you’re in a city of four million people.

S I N G I N ' I N TH E R A I N
Theatre-lovers of all ages, from school kids to senior citizens, can get tickets for a show they’ll adore over the coming months. Three huge musicals are all hitting Melbourne stages soon and are sure to wow audiences. Creative genius Tim Minchin has adapted Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book to bring us Matilda the Musical, while heartthrob Adam Garcia steps into Gene Kelly’s famous dancing shoes to revisit the 1959 film Singin’ in the Rain. Then the hills come alive as The Sound of Music inspires you to ‘Climb Ev’ry Mountain’ and reminds you just what comes after ‘Do-Re-Mi’.

From 7 May
THE SOUND OF MUSIC REGENT THEATRE From 13 May
FILM-SPIRATION The three big musicals set to visit Melbourne in autumn, Singin’ in the Rain, Matilda the Musical and The Sound of Music, take many of their cues from some of the most-loved films of all time.
SINGIN' IN THE RAIN Created and released in 1959, the Gene Kelly classic Singin’ in the Rain took its inspiration from Hollywood in the 1920s, when the ‘talkie’ first appeared in cinemas. In fact, many of the film’s songs had already appeared in films throughout the late-1920s and 1930s.
THE SOUND OF MUSIC When The Sound of Music was released at cinemas in 1965, it surpassed Gone With the Wind as the number-one box-office hit of all time. Although originally created as Rodgers and Hammerstein’s final stage collaboration in 1959, the three-hour film adaptation had it all – nuns, music and the snow-capped Austrian Alps.
MATCH THE LYRIC Which musical will you find this line in?
Q1
“ I’m laughing at clouds, so dark up above/The sun’s in my heart and I’m ready for love”
Q2
“ Look at these trophies, see how my trophies gleam in the sunlight, see how they shine/What do you think it took to become English hammer-throwing champion 1969?”
Q3
“ You need someone older and wiser, telling you what to do/I am seventeen going on eighteen, I’ll take care of you”
MATILDA THE MUSICAL Although Roald Dahl’s 1988 book won the Children’s Book Award and has delighted generations of children in the decades since, the 1996 film adaptation was also a huge success. Danny DeVito directed and starred, with acting support by Rhea Perlman, Paul Reubens and child star Mara Wilson, as the setting changed from England to America, and the fun was brought to life on screen.

2pm You don’t have to be a student to eat from one of the cafés inside Union House, and it’s convenient, so why not?

WHY? Geelong is just down the road, my dad is a big fan and I love Jimmy Bartel.
WHY? Rugby was too full-on in Brisbane, but in Melbourne it seems everybody likes the Storm, so I’m on the bandwagon!
WHY? They were the first Melbourne team and I love Kevin Muscat. He was such a bad boy, but he’s a gun of a coach.
WHY? I’ll always back the local team. Although the Rebels have only been around a few years, there’s always a great atmosphere at the games.

CINEMA NOVA In 2015 we revisited one of the biggest movies of all time, Jurassic Park, with the blockbuster Jurassic World. While the humans might have had all the film’s best lines, there was no doubt that the dinosaurs – from the deadly raptors to the terrifying Indominus rex – were the stars. Created by Melbourne's very own Creature Technology Company in collaboration with renowned palaeontologist Jack Horner,
Jurassic World: The Exhibition is no theme park. Sure, you’ll see a life-size animatronic Brachiosaurus and Tyrannosaurus rex, as well as go through the Hammond Creation Lab straight out of the movie, but, since it’s infused with interactive and educational elements, the exhibition will teach your kids something, too. 19 March–9 October, Melbourne Museum, Nicholson Street, Carlton

They call the east end of Collins Street the Paris end of the city. Few might realise, however, how accurate that description is when it comes to Collins Place, a building that shares its distinctive architecture with the glass pyramid of the Louvre in Paris.

Collins Place, on the corner of Collins and Exhibition Streets, represents the perfect convergence of Melbourne’s renowned pillars – culture, art and fashion. You’ll recognise a pervading European élan within the retail precincts of the Place, from the tempting aroma of espresso to the foreign films screening at the Kino Cinemas. Also similar to Europe is the refined environment that allows for a civilised but serious dose of retail therapy. A carefully curated selection of retailers, in airy, open surroundings, offers a refreshingly personalised shopping experience. Unique Australian retailers share space with international brands and Collins Place is home to a number of stores that won’t be found elsewhere in the city. Some of the retailers found at Collins Place are Feathers, Meredith & Moore, Digby’s Boutique, Boxt Jewellery, Jacqui Fernandes, Mimco,
Origen, seed, Herringbone and Rhodes & Beckett. International brands such as Giorgio Armani and Zegna round out the shopping selection and the Great Space on the lower ground level offers the perfect spot to rest between spending sprees. Ride the escalator up to the lobby of the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins, where you can enjoy an exceptional afternoon tea, a glass of wine or a cocktail by the grand piano. A visit to Collins Place is a must for the visitor to Melbourne. A peaceful oasis surrounded by the bustling city, this is the perfect spot for people watching and allows one to see the city at its most stylish. 45 Collins Street (corner of Exhibition Street) collinsplace.com.au facebook.com/collinsplace
