fashion. With writing classes and business events, as well as The Festival Plaza (14–19 March), located outside the Melbourne Museum, it also offers an opportunity for those interested in a career in fashion to learn about industry trends. For something completely different, book a seat at the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival. This is the festival’s 25th year, and will coincide with the city hosting The World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards. There’s no better time of year to splurge on a meal with family, friends or that special someone, and with participating restaurants found all over the city and suburbs, you can join in no matter where you’re staying during your time in Melbourne. If you’d prefer a different way of digging in, don’t miss the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show. Across the verdant lawns of Carlton Gardens and throughout the regal Royal Exhibition Building, professional gardeners, landscapers, architects and industry leaders will be on hand to teach and inspire you. If all you want to do during your trip to Melbourne is laugh so hard you might burst, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival is arguably the year’s cultural highlight. Day three No trip to Melbourne is complete without some retail therapy, and there’s no bigger shopping destination than Chadstone. A visit is easy, with a free shuttle bus leaving Federation Square regularly for the suburban megamall, and there are enough big names and boutiques to keep you occupied for days. Make sure you check out the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre, set to open this April. Return to the city and, before heading to your apartment, pop by the Screen Worlds exhibition at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), which explores the rich history of Australia’s television, film and gaming industry. / MEET DAISY The inaugural AFL Women’s competition kicked off earlier this year, bringing many trail-blazers to the forefront of Melbourne’s sporting agenda. Leading the way is Melbourne Demons captain Daisy Pearce, who took some time out from training to chat with Melbourne Now about life in and outside of football. How long have you lived in Melbourne? I moved here in 2002, so 15 years. I grew up in Bright in north-eastern Victoria. I’ve moved around a little bit, usually on the north side of the city, and I live in Parkville now. What do you love most about living in Melbourne? At any time of the year there are always major sporting events. It just brings Melbourne to life and really brings out the best in our city. And the coffee! We’re spoilt for coffee. What are your interests outside of football? I play a fair bit of golf, which I’ve gotten into over the past three or four years. I also love cooking and food. Winning the inaugural AFL Women’s Premiership would be an amazing feat, for yourself, your team and for the city of Melbourne. How can fans support the team in its journey? We’d love as many people as possible to come down and watch a game – if not at the venue, then by tuning in on TV and embracing this new competition. To support the Melbourne Demons specifically, we’ve got some really cool merchandise that says ‘Melbourne’ on it. If you’re visiting the city it’s a good souvenir of your time here.
Daisy’s tips RESTAURANT Eureka 89. I remember the first time I went – I just couldn’t believe the view was real.
CAFE Code Black in Brunswick. It’s tough competition, but I reckon it’s got the best coffee in Melbourne.
VIEW Looking up the Yarra River towards the sports precinct from Princes Bridge. It just represents what Melbourne is all about.

VINCENT celebrated He is one of the most well-known artists of any era, and now Melbourne celebrates the work of Vincent van Gogh in a worldpremiere exhibition. Vincent van Gogh had a profound love for the seasons, believing they represented the circle of life. It’s a theme explored in Van Gogh and the Seasons, 2017’s first instalment of the hugely successful Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series. More than 40 paintings and 25 drawings, many of which have never travelled to Australia before, will be presented within
themes devoted to each of the four seasons, including the abundance of spring and the deprivation of winter. Travel to some of the most important places in van Gogh’s life, including the Dutch region of Brabant, where he was born in 1853 and lived for much of his early life; Arles, where the artist experienced his definitive period of creativity; Saint-Rémy de Provence, where he was treated for mental illness; and Auvers-sur-Oise, where van Gogh committed suicide in 1890. Adam
MURPHY
“I’m just excited to have friends and family come and see the show,” Adam Murphy says down the line from Sydney. “Melbourne audiences are going to love it. The fact that it’s at Her Majesty’s Theatre, which is the perfect theatre for this show, means it’s going to be quite intimate.”
Adam Murphy’s Melbourne RESTAURANT There’s a place in Eltham called Small Plates. It’s a tapas, wine bar-type place. The food’s beautiful, the atmosphere’s lovely and it’s just down the road from where I live. VIEW I think if you’re in a hot air balloon over the city, that’s the best way of soaking it all in.
SHOPPING Rather than going to a big shopping
Despite not being quite in the target demographic when Aladdin was released in cinemas in 1992 – “I was in my 20s and was probably watching Pulp Fiction instead” – Murphy recognises the story’s endurance. “I remember seeing it, possibly on DVD, and realising that it wasn’t just a kids’ film. The themes and story are quite classic, boy-meets-girl type things”.
centre, I prefer exploring the laneways and finding new, boutique-y shops.
Murphy plays Jafar, the epitome of a Disney villain, in the show. “I’m very sinister and plotting and scheming the whole way through. I’m enjoying it because I get booed at the end. I’ve never been booed before. There’s kind of a mix of boos and applause; there’s an appreciation aspect to it, but also ‘we must boo the villain’.”
of clichéd, but even if you’re not a football fan, to sit – or stand – at the MCG and watch a game is pretty special.

MUST-DO ACTIVITY Dinner and a show is definitely a must-do. Especially if the show is Aladdin at Her Majesty’s Theatre!
Deen van Meer
“It’s such a fun thing to do.” And so begins Aladdin star Adam Murphy’s conversation with Melbourne Now’s Dylan Stewart. The Melbourne local plays the evil Jafar, but when it comes to talking about his hometown, he’s far from the villain he appears to be on stage.
