Autumn leaves in Melbourne? You better be-leaf it!
Fitzroy Gardens
Finding a tranquil garden to admire autumn leaves in Melbourne is easier than you think. While Royal Botanic Gardens [Birdwood Avenue, Melbourne] is a wonderful place to visit at any time of year, during autumn it’s spectacular. With more than 6,000 tree species calling it home, including towering English elms, the vivid autumnal colours are bound to impress. For a relaxing start to your day, take a stroll through in the morning — it opens at 7.30am — and see the leaves as the morning sunlight starts to hit. After you’ve explored, head to The Terrace [Alexandra Avenue & Anderson Streer, South Yarra] and treat yourself to freshly baked scones and a cup of tea while taking in the spectacular view over the gardens and Ornamental Lake. On the other side of town, you’ll find the stunning Carlton Gardens [1–111 Carlton Street, Carlton], home to two ornamental lakes, three fountains, the heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building and, not to forget, a tapestry of trees in both Australian and European varieties. Perhaps the kind it’s most known for is the Moreton Bay fig, with its root system snaking out over the ground below thick, sprawling branches. For a spectacular sight, stand at the end of the pathway looking up towards the Royal Exhibition Building. Trees line either side of the path and their arching branches pop against the building in the background. For a garden that showcases the juxtaposition of Melbourne’s CBD to natural, picturesque scenes, Fitzroy Gardens [Wellington Parade, East Melbourne] is the place. With the city buildings looming just beyond the historic treetops, you’ll get a sense of just how much Melbourne has evolved. Meander the pathways of this Victorian-era garden lined with beautiful elms. Come autumn, the sprawling lawns are sprinkled with leaves in almost every shade of orange, showcasing the change in season. If you have the little ones in tow, be sure to stop by the model Tudor village.
lowers A Festival of F If you’re a green thumb — or aspiring to be one — make sure to time your next Melbourne visit with the colourful Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show on at the Carlton Gardens and Royal Exhibition Building from 27 to 31 March. In addition to viewing weird and wonderful plants from around the world, you can hear from gardening experts on the mainstage, enjoy a decadent high tea and browse the range of local art for sale. Don’t forget to check out the Show Gardens, where some of the country’s best landscape designers showcase their skills. melbflowershow.com.au

Werribee River
11am

5pm
Take a trip to the African savannah by starting your day at the much-loved Werribee Open Range Zoo. Make a beeline towards the safari station. Here, you’ll be chauffeured around the 200 hectares that mirror the natural environments of the animals that call this zoo home. You could see zebras, camels, giraffes or ostrich grazing around right outside the safari vehicle. Next, meander down to say hello to the gorillas, lions and hippos.
Take a post-lunch stroll and head for Werribee Park Heritage and Farmyard Orchard, about a seven-minute walk from Werribee Mansion. This orchard dates back to the 1870s and has been lovingly restored by a local community group. If you’re lucky, there may be a fruit tasting or fruit grafting event running. Otherwise, explore the orchard and reflect on what farm life once was.
Why call it a day now? With the Werribee Park Mansion Hotel and Spa closeby, plus many more exciting outdoor experiences waiting to be discovered when you wake up — the National Equestrian Centre, Werribee Park Golf Club and Shadowfax Winery — it’s time to check in so the adventures can continue.
1pm
You’re within minutes of the Werribee River, so head down to its banks and admire the natural wonders. Sit back, relax and take in the breath-taking views at the K Road Cliffs. Otherwise, take the crew for a bushwalk and see what diverse birdlife you can spot along the way.
A short drive away you’ll find the historic Werribee Mansion and its gardens — a picturesque spot for a family picnic. Roll out a rug and unpack your lunch while the kids run wild on the lush expanse of lawn. Enjoy taking in the perfectly manicured gardens and the grandeur of the Italianate-style mansion. If you’re curious about what’s inside, admission is around $10 for adults and $8 for kids. Don’t forget to take a look at the onsite sculpture park, too. 10

Enjoy the selfdeprecating stories Cal shares, as well as her hilarious analysis of life’s awkward situations and unanswered questions.
Arj Barker #2 We Need to Talk 9–21 April There aren’t many people who you’d happily listen to complain. Nor are there many people who can start a show by poking fun at the city they’re performing in. Somehow, Arj does it while keeping his audience in hysterics. You’ll be in fits of laughter as he shares qualms about humanity, delivered with signature monotone style and dry humour. See him at the Athenaeum Theatre.

What to Do Since it's surrounded by the boutique suburbs of Prahran and Armadale, you might be surprised to uncover Windsor’s bohemian side. Running parallel to Chapel Street you’ll find the much smaller Artists Lane, otherwise known as Aerosol Alley. Its walls are covered in incredible street art murals, with everything from vivid cartoons to intricate portraits impressing those who find it. Have your phone ready for some Insta-worthy snaps. Vintage fashion lovers can find many treasures hidden inside Windsor’s thrift shops. For a curated selection of second-hand styles that give the vintage stores of San Francisco and NYC a run for their money, head to Shag [130 Chapel Street, Windsor]. Here you’ll find daring pieces with unique silhouettes and plenty of colour. Vintage Sole [153 Chapel Street, Windsor] is another great store that is so sleek and organised it makes trawling through the racks to find what you’re looking for easy. Here, the men's collection is equally as impressive as the womenswear. Mr Miyagi
Where to Eat and Drink Start your day at Mr Mister [161 Chapel Street, Windsor], where excellent coffee and top-notch produce come together to make for delicious breakfasts and lunches. Go for the Mr Benedict of braised beef brisket, red cabbage sauerkraut, béarnaise, sourdough and poached eggs. For a meal later in the day, head to Mr Miyagi [99 Chapel Street, Windsor], open for dinner every day, and for lunch Friday through Sunday. Here, Japanese cuisine meets the creativity for which Melbourne dining is known. Order a few items to share from its grazing menu — like salmon nori tacos or shiitake dumplings — and pair them with a salted watermelon martini.
Artists Lane
Still have room for dessert? Head to Pidapipo [85 Chapel Street, Windsor] and choose from a captivating array of flavours. Our pick is the blood plum gelato, but you can’t go wrong with classic chocolate. If a liquid dessert is what you’re craving, the cocktails at The Woods of Windsor [108 Chapel Street, Windsor], with its old-school ambience, will impress.

Liam Ganley Angus & Bon owner 22
melbourne now+ Autumn 2019
The Standard Hotel
Liam’s Melbourne Picks Restaurant It’s a tie between Stokehouse and MoVida. Stokehouse is a Melbourne institution. The food is always amazing, the setting is breath-taking and the sunsets even better! MoVida is a favourite of mine because I love the casual vibe, fast pace and the beautiful tapas. Plus you get a real taste for Melbourne culture as it’s located at Hosier Lane. Cafe Entrecote in South Yarra. This is my local cafe. It’s a French-style bistro, with a beautiful light-filled Victorian terrace overlooking the Royal Botanic Gardens. Angus & Bon
For an Irishman who'd never worked in a bar or restaurant before opening his first Melbourne eatery, Liam Ganley has done pretty well for himself. And food and drink lovers of Melbourne are glad he’s around. A construction project manager in Ireland turned gastronomic guru in Melbourne, Liam is the man behind some of St Kilda’s best-loved hot spots — Freddie Wimpoles and The Fifth Province. Early last year, he expanded to Prahran with Angus & Bon, a swanky steakhouse that took up residence at the old Prahran Post Office. “I’ve always liked Greville Street — it has a real European feel," says Liam. "I frequently go down there for a beer. AC/DC played one of their first Melbourne shows at Greville Street’s now closed Station Hotel in January 1975. In tribute, Angus & Bon is named after the band’s guitarist Angus Young and late lead singer Bon Scott.” What sets Angus and Bon apart? It’s incredible steaks (that come without the hefty price tag), as well as the casual yet sophisticated atmosphere.
“Our steaks are cooked on our custom-built wood grill. We use ironbark — a dense wood that produces high heat. You get a unique smoky flavour that you simply can’t get cooking over gas. The interior was designed by Wendy Bergman of Bergman & Co Design Studio. Angus & Bon has a look and feel that you’d expect to find in an old New York steakhouse.”
Bar Leonards House of Love in South Yarra. It’s essentially a little house with a bar and feels like a ski lodge. It has a pool table, huge beer garden and the best fried chicken and burgers in town! View Sunsets at St Kilda Beach are spectacular. Free thing to do I love to go for a run around The Tan. Hidden gem The Standard Hotel in Fitzroy is a proper old Aussie pub, full of locals. They have local beers on tap and great pub grub. The Tan
When Liam isn’t running the show at Angus & Bon, he’s either checking out what’s happening in other bars and restaurants around Melbourne or exploring the rest of the city’s offerings. “I love the parks and beaches, the hospitality scene and the sport. The lifestyle in general is great in Melbourne.” Angus & Bon 168 Greville Street, Prahran

Competition is fierce, but this place might serve some of the city’s best pizza. Order the arancini balls to start and a couple of your favourite pizzas to share. For dessert go for the caramelised blood orange pannacotta in a dark chocolate shell, with citrus salad, crispy orange sponge cake and mint. It’ll have you wanting more.
Featuring producers from Tasmania, including King Island and Flinders Island, the contemporary Australian menu here is Bass Strait bliss. Order some oysters to start, then go for the King Island grassfed beef cheek or Scottsdale pork scotch fillet. Waterfront views along Southbank Promenade make it a winner when the sun is shining.
Enjoy a taste of Argentina at this modern yet enigmatic Southbank restaurant. Asado translates to barbecue, and that’s what this place does best. The empanadas and skirt steak are popular choices, but for something different, try the cordero, pasture-fed lamb rump spiced with coriander and chipotle.
