STYLE INSPO When in doubt over what to wear, get your headwear right and the rest will follow. The word on the street is that this season is all about colourful turbanstyle headwear like Kate Waterhouse wore last season. Think Cuban-inspired glam. Each race day has a signature flower and those who take part in this tradition do so by wearing buttonholes, corsages or fresh floral headpieces. Pollon has long been regarded as one of the city’s top florists. It’s headed by Nicholas Minton-Connell and, come spring racing time, it’s the place to go. KATES TIPS CAFE There are so many to choose from, but I love A Thousand Blessings in Richmond. It has good coffee and great food. ATTRACTION It’s got to be going to the MCG and watching

Fast forward to now and she has captained both the Melbourne Vixens and the 2017 Australian Fast5 teams. She also debuted with the Australian Diamonds in 2017, once again making the squad this year. Kate now has her sights set on the upcoming Quad Series, that will see our national team and New Zealand’s Silver Ferns bringing the heat to Hisense Arena. “Australia and New Zealand have the biggest rivalry in netball. You always know it’s going to be a tough, close contest.”

SHOP I usually head to Emporium Melbourne for shopping. It’s got everything.

With the 2018 Fast5 Series also on the horizon, Kate agrees the netball world is evolving. “In a sense, Fast5 is netball’s version of Twenty20 cricket,” she says. “The crowd gets into it. People dress up, the music’s loud and there are all the lighting effects. It’s attracting a new audience to our game.”

NETBALL IN MELBOURNE

What does she love about Melbourne? What almost every Melburnian does. “The sporting culture here is massive, and it’s great to be a part of it as both an athlete and a spectator. I also love trying to find the best coffee in Melbourne, so I spend a lot of time checking out cafes.” For the full interview with Kate: melbnow.com.au/kate-moloney

WHAT TO DO

WHERE TO EAT

Not only is Abbotsford Convent rich in history, it’s also become a hub of artistic activity and a popular meeting place. Enjoy relaxing in its beautiful gardens this spring. Wander around the grounds and admire the diverse architecture or sign up to one of the classes, like breadmaking or pottery, hosted on site. The convent is also home to a rotating calendar of markets; check it out on Saturdays for the Melbourne Book Market, the first Saturday of each month for the Vegan Market of Melbourne and the fourth Saturday of each month for the Slow Food Farmers’ Market. Have the littlies in tow? Less than 200 metres away you’ll find the always popular Collingwood Children’s Farm.

Along Victoria Street, you’ll come across the Abbotsford cafe that sent social media into meltdown with its picture-perfect, well, everything. Kitty Burns serves eye-catching brunches alongside mugs topped with some of the slickest coffee art going ’round. Prefer to pay as you feel — who doesn’t? Check out Abbotsford Convent’s vegan restaurant Lentil as Anything, where the menu changes daily. When you finish, pay what you can or what you feel is fair. Love Japanese fare? Head to Shizuku Ramen & Craft Beer where the specialties are in the name. Before heading straight for the ramen, though, acclimatise to the Japanese cuisine with some gyoza.

HOW TO GET THERE With the area serviced by trains, buses and trams, getting to Abbotsford to experience all it has to offer is a cinch. If trams are more your style, take tram route 12 or 109 and hop off wherever you like along Victoria Street. Alternatively, bus routes 200 and 207 will take you along the Johnston Street end.

With names like Salt Bush Billy Tea and Trent from Punchy, you know whatever cocktails you choose at Bad Frankie [141 Greeves Street, Fitzroy] will be full of character. Situated just off Smith Street, this barʼs quirky interior sets a casual yet cool scene, with mason jar lighting hanging from its roof and vintage photographs plastered on its walls. Offering a la carte options, as well as five- or sevencourse tasting menus, make sure you’re hungry to enjoy these elegant dishes. MEX-CELLENT Melbourne

Time for tacos? Frothing for fajitas? Here are our favourite spots for Mexican food in Melbourne.

F O N DA

01 MAMASITA Considered by many as the holy grail of Mexican eateries in Melbourne, this Collins Street classic serves up some of the city’s best. The flavoursome ox tongue taco is worth the trip to the city, as is the sweet corn ice-cream. Where 11 Collins Street Getting there Tram route 11, 12, 48 or 109 to stop 8

02 MESA VERDE Love a good margarita as much as you love a spicy salsa? Get both — and more — from Mesa Verde. With a seemingly endless tequila list, plus a taco range that features a crispy pork belly version, this place is hard to walk past. Where Level 6, Curtin House, 252 Swanston Street Getting there Tram route 86 or 96 to stop 6

03 TOUCHE HOMBRE Not only is this name fun to say, but with its combination of moody industrial vibe injected with pops of colour it’s also a fun place to be. Take on the Mexican fried chicken wings with a passionfruit paloma. Where 233 Lonsdale Street Getting there Tram route 86 or 96 to stop 6

04 FONDA

Josie Withers Photography

At Fonda they say ‘mi casa, su casa’ and you’ll definitely feel welcome here. The funky fit-out and colourful menus scream beachside Cancun, but the good food and vibes will have you feeling as breezy as you would at a mate’s place. Try the pulled pork quesadilla with pineapple salsa, teamed with a Mexican soda, for a tasty, unpretentious meal. Where 31 Flinders Lane Getting there Tram route 35, 70 or 75 to stop 8 F O N DA

This pint-sized taqueria packs a punch with its plates of colourful Mexican food. It serves up seven versions of tacos: beef, fish, pork, chorizo, grilled chicken, crispy chicken and black bean. For something sweet at the end of your meal, order a serve of churros with a choice of chocolate, chilli chocolate or dulce de leche sauce.

For an enigmatic dining experience, head to this hidden eatery below Chinatown. Unlike the neighbouring dumpling houses its menu offers starters, tacos and desserts. There’s also a ‘feed me’ option, with samples of all three. The chilaquiles come with pulled duck or mushrooms and both versions are menu standouts.

It serves up authentic Mexican street eats with a modern twist, so it’s no surprise this place is a hit. It’s loud in more ways than one, with music always booming through its colourful dining spaces. The sopa de tortilla (tortilla soup) is a must-try, and for good reason; it’s a little spicy, a little tangy, a little crunchy and 100 per cent delectable.

The name is Spanish for ‘the taste’ and after tucking into its streetstyle eats you’ll agree — the taste is ace. Enjoy all your Mexican favourites, including tacos, quesadillas and enchiladas, that will put the Old El Paso kit to shame. We recommend the tamales and, of course, the margaritas.
