MELBOURNE

No matter what you’re looking for, Melbourne offers something for everyone this summer. Summer in Melbourne is all about the tennis and, with it, a line-up of other blockbuster sporting events. The 2016 Sailing World Cup Final and Commonwealth Bank Boxing Day Test are just some of the exciting events that make this city the sporting capital of Australia. Of course Melbourne’s list of incredible sporting events would not be complete without the Australian Open Tennis Championships, which sees the world's best players descend on to Melbourne Park. The cultural capital also welcomes the exclusive and much anticipated opening of The Book of Mormon, the John Olsen: The You Beaut Country exhibition at NGV, and the return of White Night Melbourne. Melbourne has something for everyone and the best of everything this summer.

INTERNATIONAL ACTION

It’s one of the biggest events on the summer calendar, and all the drama of the Australian Open will peak around Melbourne Park over the final two weeks of January. But while names like Djokovic, Tomic, Kerber and Williams will once again take top billing on the court, off it there’s set to be just as much excitement.

Before the tennis players arrive in town, Melbourne has another summer sporting passion to indulge. Spending a day or two at the Commonwealth Bank Boxing Day Test is the perfect way to end 2016. With Pakistan having comprehensively beaten Australia earlier this year, expect Melbourne’s Pakistani population to be out in force and an electric atmosphere to engulf the MCG.

The Australian Open Festival at Birrarung Marr is the perfect place to play before heading into the tennis, or if you’re coming to Melbourne for a few days, it’s a familyfriendly destination in its own right. Some of Melbourne’s most-loved restaurants – Mamasita, Huxtaburger and Gelato Messina among them – will be serving up their best dishes, while the kids will have a blast at The Ballpark, a new mini theme park. What’s more, you’ll be one of the first to walk over the new Tanderrum Bridge, a pedestrian overpass joining Birrarung Marr and Melbourne Park, scheduled for completion in time for the tennis. Who knows? You might be there to witness the inauguration of the next big tennis thing. Australian Open Tennis Championships 16–29 January, Melbourne Park, Olympic Boulevard, event.ausopen.com

If you prefer a little more saltwater with your sport, the 2016 Sailing World Cup Final returns to Melbourne for the final leg of year. t’s going to be oh so wrong. The Book of Mormon is one of the world’s most successful – and certainly one of the funniest – musical productions of recent years. It tells the story of two Mormon missionaries sent to a remote Ugandan village to spread their religious message. The locals, though, are more worried about AIDS, famine and oppression. Sound like a comedy? Maybe not, until you remember that two of the show’s writers, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, are the comedic geniuses behind South Park. They’ve teamed up with Robert Lopez, best known for writing the Academy Awardwinning song ‘Let It Go’ from the movie Frozen. The Book of Mormon is set for its Australian premiere at the Princess Theatre from 18 January. Leave your inhibitions – and your political correctness – at the door.

For something more refined, John Olsen: The You Beaut Country celebrates the life, work and legacy of arguably Australia’s greatest living artist. The 88-year-old’s inspiring oeuvre, spanning his entire career, is on display at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia. The exhibition features photography, ceramics, tapestries and video, but the highlights are Olsen’s expansive paintings of Lake Eyre that fill one of the final galleries. Melbourne’s been lucky enough to see his work in its laneways before, and now will gain even more access to the street artist's work in a huge show. The Art of Banksy is a collection of over 80 original pieces by the secretive artist curated by his former agent, Steve Lazarides. More than a dozen other Melbourne street artists will contribute works on the walls of the exhibition, and the on-site bar and food trucks will keep you well fed.

ARE WE ON THE AIR? This summer, State Library of Victoria celebrates the 40-year history of the southern hemisphere’s largest community radio station, Triple R, in a huge exhibition. We had a quick chat with curator Angela Bailey. What does Triple R mean to you? To me Triple R is a constant reliable source of listening that has a spirit that I keep coming back for. The passion and commitment of the staff and broadcasters are testament to its rich history and longevity as an independent voice in Melbourne.

What are some of your favourite pieces that will make up the exhibition? Some of the quirky merchandise that Triple R has created over the years for its various themed Radiothons are probably some of my favourite pieces – like the vacuum-packed powdered Astronaut ice-cream that was made for the 2010 ‘Make Contact’ Radiothon. Also the range of promotional posters from 1977 to today highlights its laconic sense of style and playfulness.

Libraries have reputations as places that are meant to be quiet: Do you expect music and radio fans to stay hushed while they view the exhibition? Music and sound will definitely be evident in the space and we are not expecting the audience needs to stay quiet. Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to experience visual and sound in a number of different ways throughout the exhibition from media generated from 1976 to today. ON AIR: 40 years of 3RRR runs until 29 January in the Keith Murdoch Gallery, State Library of Victoria, 328 Swanston Street

Festival Spirit W H ITE N I G HT M E LB O U R N E Robert Blackburn

Melbourne in summer is the home to some of the biggest festivals of the year. If you’re looking for a visit with a difference, base your trip around one of these events. YEAR OF THE ROOSTER

A REASON TO STAY OUT

The Chinese New Year Festival (27 January–12 February) returns in 2017 and Melbourne is set for one of the biggest parties of the year. From Chinatown to Docklands and throughout the city centre there will be music, dancing, eating and merriment over the two-week festival.

Australia’s biggest one-night extravanganza of music, visual arts, dance and performance, White Night Melbourne (18 February) will return for the fifth time in 2017.

One of the best parts about being in Melbourne for Chinese New Year is the fact that you never know what you’ll see next. Popular attractions like Eureka Skydeck 88 and Queen Victoria Market host events, while roving performers spring up where you least expect them. Fireworks, food markets and children’s events all play a part in the biggest multicultural event in town. C H I N E S E N E W Y E A R FE S TI VA L

The streets of Melbourne will be awash with colour and sound all night long and there’ll be more spectacular events than ever before taking over the streets, laneways and gardens. Plus, the city’s biggest attractions, including the ACMI, National Gallery of Victoria, State Library of Victoria, Royal Exhibition Building and, of course, Federation Square, will be hives of activity. Melbourne’s Christmas Festival is – surprise, surprise – happening throughout December again. If you’re in town with the kids in tow, a detour to Christmas Square is a must.

For the Dapper Gentleman

From 25 November until 25 December the area usually known as City Square – along Swanston Street between Collins Street and Flinders Lane – becomes Christmas Square, a wondrous place filled with exciting activities for young and old alike. Open from 10am to 1 1pm each day of the festival, the square will, host Santa Claus, who'll provide snap judgements on how worthy your kids are of their dream present. This year, projections will be cast upon the Town Hall and Federation Square every 30 minutes between 9pm and 10.20pm each night (30 November–25 December), there are more places than ever to join in the festive spirit. For the Music Tragic Independent record stores are experiencing a resurgence in Melbourne. One of the oldest, Polyester Records, has been trading since 1981 with strong links to the local music scene and plenty of in-store performances as well. 387 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, polyesterrecords.com

For the Sweet Tooth One of the stars of Melbourne’s dessert scene is Darren Purchese of Burch & Purchese Sweet Studio. You might want to store the chocolate, mandarin and salted caramel cake in the fridge rather than under the Christmas tree though.

Daria Gavrilova Australia’s second-highest ranked female tennis player, Daria Gavrilova hasn’t always called Melbourne home. But with a local boyfriend and another Australian Open to look forward to, we’ll claim her as a local.

“ Tennis was something I loved to do from when I first started as a little kid,” 22-year old Gavrilova says. “I have so many great memories of travelling playing junior tournaments and meeting other players from all over the world.” Daria grew up in Russia and although she only moved to Melbourne in 2012, it did not take long for the city to feel like home. Living in the bayside suburb of Middle Park, the restaurants and shopping of the area makes it instantly appealing to a young professional athlete. Of course, there’s plenty of training to do as well. “My training weeks are very full with little time for socialising,” she says. “ I usually practise on court for 3-4 hours a day in addition to doing weights and running. There is also massage and work with my physio. The days are long but I usually have one day off a week just to relax and get ready for the week ahead.” In the lead-up to the Australian Open, all eyes will be on Melbourne Park and the Aussies in the middle of the action. “There is way more attention on me during the Australian Open but I enjoy it and so far have played well in that environment.” We’ll be right behind her as she goes around again in 2017.

DARIA’S TOP TIPS: RESTAURANT: We always get great service – and delicious

food – at the Railway Club Hotel in Port Melbourne. CAFE: Dundas & Faussett in Albert Park is great during summer;

I love sitting outside and watching the world go by. VIEW: Looking back at the city from the pier at Middle Park Beach. SHOPPING: It’s hard to beat all the options at Emporium

Melbourne in the middle of the city. WALK: We live across the road from the bay, so going for a walk E M P O R I U M M E LB O U R N E

along the water is something we do regularly. FREE THING TO DO: There’s no better way to spend time than by taking a long walk along the beach in the summertime.

While plenty of action happens in the city centre, and the north is where the cool kids hang out, nothing beats a weekend by the bay. We’ve mapped out a couple of cheeky, enjoyable days in St Kilda.

Head south for

summer S T K I LDA B E AC H

Saturday Kick start your day by taking to the water at St Kilda Beach. If you didn’t bring your bathers, simply stroll along the promenade or hire a bike from one of the blue Melbourne Bike Share stands along Fitzroy Street and cruise the foreshore. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, swing into Captain Baxter for the delicious fried fish tacos with spiced avocado and Vietnamese mint, scallop and prawn dumplings with Chinese black vinegar and a peanut butter parfait with raspberry sorbet. You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to dinner in St Kilda, but the recently renovated St. Hotel, with its contemporary European menu, is hard to beat. A sprawling, multi-storeyed venue, its high ceilings and excellent wine list are made for summer evenings. When the night is done you’re not too far from a good night’s rest at Abode by Easystay.

ST KILDA FEST IS COMING! Join about 400,000 other fun lovers and get into live music and a party atmosphere at St Kilda Festival (4–12 February). The full program will be announced in January, so bookmark melbnow.com.au for all the updates. S T. H OTE L

Sunday On Instagram? Chances are you’ve seen shots from Matcha Mylkbar, the newest addition to Melbourne’s vegan food scene. While you might never have gone full veg before, once you tuck into a bowl of dragon fruit, banana, orange, goji berry and chocolate protein granola, or a serving of heirloom tomatoes, fresh avocado, almond fetta, basil and kale pesto on toast, you’ll leave a convert. Before heading off, make sure you stop by the St Kilda Esplanade Market, open from 10am to 5pm every Sunday until April. Pick up a work of art, a t-shirt or a gift for the folks back home. Melbourne Bike Share 19 Fitzroy Street and 80 Fitzroy Street, St Kilda, melbournebikeshare.com.au

Step through the mouth of Mr Moon and soak up the carnival atmosphere of Melbourne’s home of fun. Come and brave the heights of the Great Scenic Railway for a spectacular view of Port Phillip Bay. Try out your dodgem skills, enter the Circus of Screams if you dare, plus enjoy all the spinning, zooming, twirling and shrieking you could possibly want – all summer long.

Melbourne’s Cultural Epicentre With a major festival, free exhibitions and low-cost shows scheduled for the summer months, it will be hard to miss Arts Centre Melbourne if you’re coming to town.

For more than 30 years, Arts Centre Melbourne has sat at the centre of the city’s cultural offering, with world-class theatre, dance, music, art and circus part of an ever-evolving program. These are just a couple of this season’s highlights.

KYLIE ON STAGE The concert outfits of Kylie Minogue are on show as part of the free Kylie on Stage exhibition (until 22 January). From glamorous gowns to over-the-top costumes, the exhibition will showcase the pleasure – and the pain – that comes with wearing creations by some of the world’s most famous designers.

ASIA TOPA The first-ever Asia-Pacific Triennial of Performing Arts will showcase the region’s many cultures and incorporate digital arts, music, design, installation, architecture, contemporary dance and ballet. A must-see is The Music of AR Rahman (16 February) at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, where the superstar’s works, including the music he composed for Slumdog Millionaire, will be performed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and – in a huge coup – feature AR Rahman himself as a special guest.
