GEORGIA PERRY

After running a successful side business selling her own brand of accessories online, designer and illustrator Georgia Perry has opened KIOSK. At this fun and funky store in Fitzroy she sells her own creations and shines a light on other independent designers.

What were you doing before opening KIOSK?

GEORGIA’S PICKS RESTAURANT Supernormal – it’s a

Melbourne institution for sure. CAFE Burnside Coffee – they’re our

neighbours and super rad people. EVENT Melbourne International

Film Festival – I’d watch movies all day if I could. MUST-DO FOR A VISITOR Queen

Victoria Market – hectic and delicious.

I studied graphic design and had been working full time as a designer/ commercial illustrator for eight or nine years. As a bit of a side hustle, I began creating my own products in 2014. I then started selling online, and wholesaling soon after. The Georgia Perry brand is still the biggest part of what we do, and we’re now stocked in about 160 stores globally. How did KIOSK become what it is today? I’d always dreamed of having a physical space where I could showcase the Georgia Perry range, as well as curate all of my favourite things from other designers. One morning I was out on my daily walk, and I noticed this perfect empty shell right at the end of the rainbow on the corner of Smith and Gertrude Streets in Fitzroy. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was going to be my shop.

What inspires your own creations? Inspiration is everywhere for me. The product side of my business has grown very organically and without much planning, but recently I sat down and scheduled collections that are now released three to four times a year. Dreaming up ideas is the most fun; sitting down with a big pile of books, visiting galleries and museums and, of course, travelling are all very important parts of the creative process for me. What do you love most about living in Melbourne? I’ve lived in Melbourne for more than three years, and it still feels like I’m on holiday. There’s always something new to see, somewhere new to eat. I just love the energy of this city.

MEET MATT Matt Bax is an artistbartender hybrid, who’s become a prominent figure on the city’s social scene. He’s also the founder of Bar Americano, one of Melbourne’s tiniest bars. CAREER SO FAR IZ A K AYA D E N

I’m an artist, who turned to bars as a way to keep my painting materials well stocked. I started with Der Raum in 2001, which had some nice international success and led to the opening of Tippling Club in Singapore, Gamsei in Munich and, of course, Bar Americano in Melbourne’s Presgrave Place.

Berlin Bar Where? 16 Corrs Lane What? A cosy bar where one side of the room reflects the opulence of West Berlin, while the other features a grungy, war theme — including bathtubs and bunks — representing East Berlin. Don’t miss? The Die Ziege, which features peaty Talisker 10 Year Old Scotch, Drambuie scotch honey liqueur and toasted sesame seeds. Web? berlinbar.com.au Getting there? Tram number 86 or 96 to stop 7

STORY OF BAR AMERICANO I first discovered real cocktail drinking while living in Munich and travelling in Italy. I’d always thought about opening a tiny bar as a homage to these experiences. Bar Americano is only licensed for 10 people standing, so that means two or three bartenders for every 10 guests. It’s a ridiculous concept, but the customer comes out the winner.

BAR AMERICANO’S MOST-ORDERED COCKTAIL The Negroni. A New York Times writer called it the best he has ever tasted. We also think it’s pretty rad.

MATT’S MELBOURNE PICKS… RESTAURANT Attica. Ben, the owner, is a good mate of mine and a total inspiration. He’s always looking to improve with every day and every dish.

The Experiment — it’s the signature cocktail made by mad scientists and it changes monthly. Web? thecroftinstitute.com.au Getting there? Tram number 86 or 96 to stop 7

OTAO KITCHEN COOKING SCHOOL MORNING From the city, catch any Belgrave or Lilydale Line train to Glenferrie Station. Head towards Axil Coffee Roasters [322 Burwood Road], where you’ll enjoy a delicious breakfast from a menu that balances the tried-and-true breakfast items with more unique eats. You’ll also find arguably some of Melbourne’s best coffee, from a team led by roasting royalty Dave Makin and Zoe Delany.

AFTERNOON After breakfast, meander down to Glenferrie Road and browse through the stores you stumble across. Readings [701 Glenferrie Road] is a popular haunt for bookworms, while Alley Tunes Records [660 Glenferrie Road] has musos covered. You’ll also come across some beautiful homewares stores like Homing Instincts [204 Glenferrie Road], as well as fun gift stores like Blackbird & Fox [673/681 Glenferrie Road]. Stop at Yo-Chi [206 Glenferrie Road] for some frozen yoghurt crowned with your choice of sweets, fruits or muesli from the topping buffet, while watching the commuters of Glenferrie Road pass you by. Then continue moseying through the array of stores on offer.

Brilliant for a weekend getaway with gift vouchers and private and corporate outings available. Otao Kitchen focuses on Asian cooking classes and makes the most of the wealth of local produce from Victoria Street, Richmond, for its Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Indian cooking experiences. Perfect your Melbourne visit by donning an apron and learning a new skill or bolstering your existing cooking talent under the guidance of our Asian chefs. A: T: E: W:

You’ll have a fantastic view of the neighbourhood and can watch the sun go down as you enjoy authentic Italian pizza. Continue the rooftop fun by booking in a movie on the rooftop at Lido Cinemas [675 Glenferrie Road]. Outdoor screenings run through the summer months, providing the perfect way to spend a balmy summer evening. After the flick, head down to Vaporetto [Rear 681 Glenferrie Road] and enjoy a glass of wine in the Venetian-style setting. If you’re visiting on a Friday or Saturday, grab a ticket to the Lido Jazz Room and let the live music entertain you.

With new food crazes popping up daily, it’s easy to overlook Melbourne’s foodie classics. Get reacquainted with these institutions during your next visit.

Tried and True • MELBOURNE’S CLASSICS •

Ezard The flagship venue of gastronomical genius Teage Ezard is tucked away in one of Melbourne’s most happening laneways. After opening in 1999, Ezard still manages to entice foodies from near and far to sample the delicious Asian-influenced cuisine. The seafood at this sleek Melbourne institution is a must-try. 187 Flinders Lane, ezard.com.au

France-Soir

EZARD

Since launching in 1986, France-Soir has become one of Melbourne’s best-loved French restaurants. Regulars love the steak tartare, scallops, crème brulee and, of course, escargot is featured the menu. The atmosphere is intimate, and it’s almost always busy, but it’s all part of what makes this dining experience so great. 11–13 Toorak Road, South Yarra, france-soir.com.au

Pellegrini’s Espresso Bar If you want honest, authentic Italian cuisine, you can’t go past Pellegrini’s. Here, the food really does speak for itself; delicious and generously sized servings of perfectly cooked lasagna and pasta will have you coming back for more. The restaurant itself has remained almost unchanged since it originally opened in the 1950s, giving it old-school charm. 66 Bourke Street

Flower Drum From the rich red carpet to the floral arrangements and crisp white tablecloths, you’ll know as soon as you walk in that this isn’t your run-of-the-mill Chinese restaurant. This lavishness — in addition to the food, of course — is one of the reasons Flower Drum has been one of the city’s best fine-dining experiences since opening in 1975. Expect high-quality Cantonese cuisine. The Peking duck in particular is highly recommended. 17 Market Lane, flowerdrum.melbourne 24
