After running a successful side business selling her own brand of accessories online, designer and illustrator Georgia Perry has opened KIOSK. At this fun and funky store in Fitzroy she sells her own creations and shines a light on other independent designers.
What were you doing before opening KIOSK?

I studied graphic design and had been working full time as a designer/ commercial illustrator for eight or nine years. As a bit of a side hustle, I began creating my own products in 2014. I then started selling online, and wholesaling soon after. The Georgia Perry brand is still the biggest part of what we do, and we’re now stocked in about 160 stores globally. How did KIOSK become what it is today? I’d always dreamed of having a physical space where I could showcase the Georgia Perry range, as well as curate all of my favourite things from other designers. One morning I was out on my daily walk, and I noticed this perfect empty shell right at the end of the rainbow on the corner of Smith and Gertrude Streets in Fitzroy. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was going to be my shop.
What inspires your own creations? Inspiration is everywhere for me. The product side of my business has grown very organically and without much planning, but recently I sat down and scheduled collections that are now released three to four times a year. Dreaming up ideas is the most fun; sitting down with a big pile of books, visiting galleries and museums and, of course, travelling are all very important parts of the creative process for me. What do you love most about living in Melbourne? I’ve lived in Melbourne for more than three years, and it still feels like I’m on holiday. There’s always something new to see, somewhere new to eat. I just love the energy of this city.

STORY OF BAR AMERICANO I first discovered real cocktail drinking while living in Munich and travelling in Italy. I’d always thought about opening a tiny bar as a homage to these experiences. Bar Americano is only licensed for 10 people standing, so that means two or three bartenders for every 10 guests. It’s a ridiculous concept, but the customer comes out the winner.
