Harry’s Finally Here Following enormous success on the West End and Broadway, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will make its way to Melbourne’s Princess Theatre from 16 January. Picking up where the final Harry Potter book left off, this stage play sees our favourite wizard in the year 2017, happily married to Ginny Weasley and sending Albus, their son, off for his first year at Hogwarts. A time-travelling adventure ensues that will delight wizards and witches, young and old. This story is so expansive it’s experienced in two parts, seen as either a matinee and an evening performance or two evening performances on consecutive nights. harrypottertheplay.com/au

Deon St.Mor, Drumplings Founder What do design, cosmetics and dumplings have in common? Deon St.Mor — the man behind Drumplings, MOR Cosmetics and D1 homewares — says there’s a lot, actually. Drumplings

+6 Drumplings Ever wondered what a cheeseburger dumpling might taste like? Here’s your chance. This colourful eatery serves up boundarypushing dumplings like truffle mushroom, fish n’ chips and chicken laksa varieties. They’ll have you wanting more. Where 227–229 Bourke Street, Melbourne Getting there Tram route 86 or 96 to stop 6 Web drumplings.com

Career So Far It all kicked off when I decided to study industrial design at RMIT University, which allowed me to design across many industries. My first brand was a multidisciplinary design practice, incorporating fashion, graphic design and interior design. After the consultancy, I launched my first homewares brand D1, then my beauty brand MOR Cosmetics. I’m currently exploring the hospitality industry.

Story of Drumplings Drumplings came about as I have always been curious about products that connect consumers emotionally through design. Building a dumpling speaks to this. Adding each ingredient in a dumpling is similar to building a cosmetics product. They both have to be designed from the inside to the outside.

Favourite Dumpling I love each dumpling for its own simple characteristics. For example, the truffle mushroom is aromatic and has a beautiful texture. I really like the cheeseburger because of how much it tastes like a cheeseburger; it’s become our most famous dumpling. But if I had to pick, today my favourite is the mac and cheese dumpling.

From food to events, culture to nature, the suburbs of Melbourne’s west have much more than you’d expect. All that’s missing is you. The Arts Scene

Take a Taste

Get your dose of culture by paying a visit to Bowery Theatre [309C Main Road East, St Albans]. Named after the late Leigh Bowery, who was born in Sunshine but became influential on the London arts scene in the 80s and 90s, the theatre offers a robust calendar of exhibitions, performances and workshops. The west is also home to awe-inspiring public artworks. Head to Sunshine’s main street to find John Kelly’s Man Lifting Cow sculpture [296–298 Hampshire Road, Sunshine] or, if street art is more your style, explore the streets of both Sunshine and St Albans to delve deeper into the emerging street-art scene.

The west side is a multicultural melting pot, which means that when it comes to food, you can pick almost any cuisine and find it. In St Albans, Sunshine and Deer Park you can feast on dishes from Southeast Asia — think Filipino, Malaysian and Vietnamese — as well as flavours from the Middle East and Africa. Head to Keilor Village [Old Calder Highway, Keilor] for an atmosphere that’s reminiscent of a quaint country town, but with a number of outlets serving up big city flavours. Or visit Eat Street at Watergardens Shopping Centre [399 Melton Highway, Taylors Lakes] to refuel before a shopping session.

Outdoor Adventure One of the west’s biggest natural drawcards is Brimbank Park [Keilor Park Drive, Keilor East]. With the Maribyrnong River running through it, bike trails to explore, picnic areas for relaxing and play spaces for the kids, it’s the perfect location for a fun family day. For something out of the ordinary, check out Organ Pipes National Park [Organ Pipes Road, Keilor North]. It features a set of basalt columns formed by the cooling and cracking of molten lava. You might even spot some kangaroos!

What to Do Williamstown Beach is the perfect place to get a dose of vitamin sea. Bring a beach towel, some sunscreen and a good book then set yourself up for a couple of hours relaxing in the sun. Or get those limbs moving by taking a walk along the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail and enjoy the waterside views with the CBD in the background. Be sure to make a pitstop at the perfectly manicured Williamstown Botanic Gardens [corner Giffard and Osborne Streets, Williamstown]. If shopping is more your style, head to Nelson Place where you’ll find art and craft store Pick Up Stitches [141 Nelson Place] and homewares store Memez [153 Nelson Place]. Turn the corner onto Ferguson Street and you’ll find gift store Poppi Williams [21 Ferguson Street], shoe emporium Cinori [13/11–19 Ferguson Street] and more.

Hellenic Hotel, Williamstown

Where to Eat The choices are endless in Williamstown, with many eateries offering top-notch tucker, some with views over the water. If you’re after brunch, you can find dishes like apple crumble French toast and potato croquettes with eggs, bacon and spinach at General Food Co [117 Nelson Place]. For a lunch you can enjoy sitting on the beach, order fish and chips or a burger from Kiosk by d’Asporto [94–98 Esplanade]. Staying for dinner? Enjoy excellent Greek fare just like yia yia would make at George Calombaris’ Hellenic Hotel [28 Ferguson Street]. Anyone with a sweet tooth should take a seat at Chocolate Dip [177 Nelson Place], where desserts from cake to churros are the specialty.

Alexis van Maanen

EVITA Jeff Busby

Siglo Tess Kelly

Alexis’ Tips Bar Any rooftop bar, especially Siglo. I love having a glass of wine with a view. Restaurant Sister of Soul is a vegan restaurant on Acland Street in St Kilda. It offers so many different cuisines and options. EVITA Jeff Busby

One of EVITA’s leading ladies chats to us about landing a dream role, working with Tina Arena, and her favourite things to do in Melbourne. Since graduating high school at the end of 2017, Alexis van Maanen has accomplished what many performers her age are just starting to work towards. She landed a principal role with the hit musical EVITA, which, backing up a successful season at Sydney Opera House, is making its way to Arts Centre Melbourne from 5 December. “I was sent the EVITA audition brief by my agent, and I had been called to audition for the role of the Mistress,” Alexis explains. “I did the audition and got a callback. On the second last day of year 12 my agent called me to say, ‘This time next year you will be standing on the EVITA stage.’ And here I am!”

22

melbourne now+ Summer 2019

Performing opposite ARIA Hall of Fame inductee Tina Arena, Alexis is rubbing shoulders with some of the industry’s best. “Tina is the definition of professional. She is so calm and collected. I am in awe of her voice, her acting and her performance. I am very grateful to be in this cast alongside her.” Outside of performing, when she’s not honing her German and Chinese language skills, Alexis keeps abreast of international relations and politics. When she’s home in Melbourne enjoying some time out though, it’s all about enjoying life’s little pleasures. “Melbourne is home to me, and I love its vibe. If it is a warm day, I might head to Brighton or St Kilda for some beach time. Or I’ll head out to one of Melbourne’s great brunch spots.”

Nature spot The Royal Botanic Gardens is such a great place for a run or to have a picnic. Place to indulge I love yoghurt and Yo-Chi has so many different flavours of frozen yoghurt and toppings. You can go nuts! Event White Night is always so interactive and has lots of different things going on. Hidden gem Vintage Bazaar is a must-see on Chapel Street. It’s a massive vintage store, with lots of hidden gems inside.

For the Foodies

Family Fun

Over 15 days, fans can experience the sounds of some of the best homegrown and international acts at the AO Live Stage at Birrarung Marr. Last summer saw the likes of Jimmy Barnes, Client Liaison, Tina Arena and Rudimental take the stage.

The Australian Open wouldn’t be a true Melbourne event if it didn’t showcase the top-notch food this city is renowned for. Enjoy a pre- or post-game meal prepared by the talented teams at Rockpool and Nobu, or if it’s a quick bite between matches you’re after, try some of the tasty Cantonese cuisine served up by Beijing Betty, created by the folks behind the much-loved Hanoi Hannah and Tokyo Tina. There will be 15 eateries for you to choose from, including Mamasita, Hellenic Republic and Biggie Smalls — don’t be surprised if you’re back for a second serve.

There’s plenty to keep the littlest tennis fans entertained during the January school holidays. The AO Ballpark will be back and bigger than ever, with a Super Soaker play zone (including a 12-metre waterslide), climbing walls, stage shows, ANZ Tennis Hot Shots and plenty more.

This summer, the AO Live Stage will light up with another stellar line-up, including a free charity concert for beyondblue on Sunday 13 January. Visit the Australian Open website for more information.

Summer Nights

Luna Park, St Kilda

St Kilda Beach

Acland Street, St Kilda

St Kilda Pier

When the balmy summer evenings roll around, Melbourne’s southside is the place for an evening adventure. The best part? Getting there and back is easy. Hop on a route 16 tram bound for Melbourne’s summer hot spot, St Kilda Beach. When you see the conspicuous entry to Luna Park [18 Lower Esplanade, St Kilda] – Mr Moon’s giant mouth – it will be time to hop off the tram. Take advantage of Luna Park’s extended summer hours and $2 entry-only ticket (don’t worry, it can be upgraded to a ride ticket at any time). Enjoy taking your mates on at a few carnival games or, if you’re with your loved one, head to the Scenic Railway for some stunning sunset views over Port Phillip Bay. When you’re done with the Luna Park fun, take a short stroll over to the aptly named Big Mouth [168 Acland Street, St Kilda]. Here you can enjoy crumbed barramundi tacos, southern fried chicken burgers or a classic parma. Pair your meal with your favourite ale or wine and enjoy the beats pumping through this sleek yet relaxed restaurant. 24

melbourne now+ Summer 2019

Your next stop is for dessert. Make a beeline towards Brighton Road to hop on a route 67 tram that will take you to Elsternwick. Hop off when you reach Glenhuntly Road, then take a short stroll to Will’s Batch Ice Cream [300 Glen Huntly Road, Elsternwick]. Made daily in small batches, you’ll find an impressive array of flavours at this ice cream and gelato emporium — and with unusual options like blueberry lemonade or lavender, it’s certainly not your typical gelateria. Keen to kick on? Do it in style by taking a short stroll up to Antique Bar [218 Glen Huntly Road, Elsternwick]. It exudes oldworld glamour, so take a seat on one of the luxe Victorian lounges and cheers with your craft beer or boutique wine.

No matter how late your evening escapade goes, Night Network will get you back to your hotel in the city with ease. When you’re ready to call it a night, hop back on a route 67 tram or on a train from Elsternwick Station — both run all night long on weekends thanks to Night Network.

There’s an app for that…

Remember to download the PTV App to help plan your adventure. You can easily plan your journey to and from the southside and access real-time information at the touch of a button. For more information, visit the website below. ptv.vic.gov.au

Weekend Brunching

+1 Dumbo

It’s our favourite weekend meal and Melbourne’s cafes have stepped up to their plates to deliver brunches of distinction.

It’s a little hard to believe this light and modern cafe was once a milk bar, but when you’re presented with your brunch you’ll feel like a kid in a candy store. Looking at the menu, it’s hard to ignore the Nutella pannacotta, which comes with house-made salted caramel doughnuts. If you’re in the mood for something savoury, the truffled mushrooms with spinach, walnuts and goat cheese will have you equally as chuffed with your meal. +2 Pillar of Salt This recently opened Richmond brunch spot rapidly rose up the ranks to become a local favourite. The decor is swish and the food delish, with healthy options like the black porridge of black rice, organic rolled oats, caramelised banana, toasted coconut, blueberry, chia compote and more. For something heartier go for the Greek board, a breakfast that combines scrambled eggs with Greek flavours, including tzatziki and saganaki. Team your brunch with an Indonesian iced coffee, made with condensed milk, and you’ll leave grinning.

+4 Light Years

The powerhouse team behind brunch-time hot spots including Tinker in Northcote, Penta in Elsternwick and Legacy in Camberwell has brought us another winner frequented by many an influencer. Go for the chilli scrambled eggs to kick-start your day or the renowned Golden Gay Time pannacotta. The aroma of Inglewood coffee fills this industrial-chic cafe making it hard not to order a latte or flat white with your meal. It’s decked out with slick marble fittings and its floor-to-ceiling windows let in plenty of natural light, but it’s the Asian influences added to classic brunch dishes that gives Light Years its edge. The miso scrambled eggs are a must-try and come with soy roasted mushrooms, seaweed, nori, spring onion, charred corn and milk bread sticks. Avo lovers should go for the Pixel avocado on sourdough — additions of chilli air-dried cabbage and kale, edamame hummus, pickled radish and nori give it a point of difference. If you appreciate excellent design, this Fitzroy market will have you captivated. Each weekend from 11am to 5pm, you’ll find homewares, furniture, art and wearable art. Speak directly to the artisans who’ve crafted the unique pieces you might take home and be inspired by their creations. If you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, many offer commission works so you can get precisely what you’re after.

This seaside market is as free-spirited and varied as St Kilda itself and attracts an eclectic mix of stallholders each Sunday. Wander the market’s aisles and see what treasures you find. Test out homemade body products made fresh each week by family business Food For Your Skin. Or pick up a playful piece of jewellery made of Monopoly or Scrabble pieces from the Robotica Factory stall. It’s the perfect place to find a unique Christmas gift for your loved ones.

Experience the spirit of a regional craft market in the heart of the city at this Sunday market held on the lawn of Arts Centre Melbourne. The arts precinct creates the perfect backdrop for the carefully curated range of stallholders selling everything from photography to flaky pastries.
