WHO IS AARDMAN?

CLAYMATION

MORE AT ACMI

One of Britain’s biggest creative exports, Aardman was founded in the seventies by two teenagers, Peter Lord and David Sproxton. From humble beginnings testing out animation techniques in their kitchen, Lord and Sproxton are now leading one of the most successful – and visually recognisable – animation studios in the world.

Claymations, as the name suggests, are made from plasticine or clay, with each movement skillfully moulded and captured frame by frame using the stopmotion technique. This intricate and timeconsuming process means films can take years to complete. Not only does Aardman have this down to a fine art, but the studio is also recognised for its unparalleled ability to convey a character’s emotions and personality through clay-moulded facial expressions and body language.

After experiencing the enchantment of Aardman, take a broader look at the past, present and future of the moving image at the free Screen Worlds exhibition.

With franchises including Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and Chicken Run to its name, the studio has claimed four Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature Film for Wallace and Gromit’s feature debut, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.

THE EXHIBITION The exhibition will feature more than 350 items from the studio including concept drawings, models and storyboards, as well as set pieces like the flying machine from Chicken Run and the tall ship from The Pirates! Band of Misfits, which stands at an impressive five metres tall. Additionally, visitors to the exhibition can enjoy film screenings, workshops and education programs. The likes of Paris and Frankfurt have previously played host to this exhibition, but its stop in Melbourne will see additional artworks from Aardman’s forthcoming feature film Early Man.

Both teams will be bringing out their big guns, with gold medal-winning Neymar Jr of Brazil and Argentina’s fivetime FIFA Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi both set to play. If you can’t get enough of soccer, the good news is just four days later Brazil will return to the MCG for a clash against our beloved Socceroos. Charlie Carrington Experiencing different cuisines is arguably one of the best parts of travel. One Melbourne restaurateur has figured out a way to bring a rotation of international fare to this foodie city. Meet Charlie Carrington, 23-year-old head chef and owner of Atlas Dining.

THE CONCEPT OF ATLAS DINING IS SIMPLE BUT UNIQUE.

How did you discover your love of cooking?

Charlie researches and travels to a select destination,

My grandmother’s sister was an amazing pastry cook. Whenever I ate her food, I just couldn’t believe something could be so delicious. From there I became very interested in chefs, especially people like Gordon Ramsay, who I still admire.

experiences its food and cooking techniques first hand, then brings his learnings back to the Atlas Dining kitchen. Every four months a new menu is introduced, inspired by a different destination, providing guests with an everchanging but delicious dining experience. This season the menu is Korean and at $65 for six courses, this is one Melbourne restaurant you won’t want to miss.

How did the Atlas Dining concept come to be? I did an eight-month overseas trip and for six of those months I worked for free at different places in South America, North America and Europe. The experience of learning in a different country and cooking a different cuisine every month is something that I wanted to keep going.

What do you love most about Melbourne’s foodie scene? I really like that, in Melbourne, restaurants can cook their own way and have their own service style. There’s no real rulebook here, or if there is a rulebook, there are young people in the industry saying ‘I’m not listening to those rules’ and just doing their own thing.

CHARLIE'S PICKS RESTAURANT Dainty Sichuan [176 Toorak Road, South Yarra].

The fish-flavoured eggplant is absolutely unforgettable. BAR I love going to the Alps Wine Shop and Bar

[64 Commercial Road, Prahran]. I know a lot of our guests have pre-drinks there and I can see why. FREE THING TO DO I’m always into walking through markets,

like the Queen Vic Market [Corner Elizabeth & Victoria Streets] or Prahran Market [63 Commercial Road, Prahran], and checking out what’s new there.
