Style Sessions Prepare for the buzz as Melbourne launches into three months of fashion, art and of course racing. From unique rooftop bars to the action at the racetrack, there is no place better to be.

Race Daze Something magical happens in Melbourne as spring brings warm days and the much anticipated Spring Racing Carnival (22 September – 25 November).

With 50 days of racing action on the calendar it is time to prepare for all the frocks, fillies, fascinators and the thoroughbreds. The BMW Caulfield Cup (18 October) is filled with glamour and style, and is followed closely by the Manikato Stakes Night Race (24 October) and Sportingbet Cox Plate (25 October) both at Moonee Valley Racecourse. Then the most anticipated week on the racing calendar arrives as the Melbourne Cup Carnival (1-8 November) thrills crowds from across the country at Flemington Racecourse.

Holy Grail With four fashion-fuelled racedays to look forward to, the Melbourne Cup Carnival is the highlight of the racing season. Flemington Racecourse plays host to the much anticipated meets, with groundskeepers nurturing around 12,000 fragrant roses in time to bloom for the main event. Kicking off with the always glamorous AAMI Victoria Derby Day (1 November) – one of the most pre-eminent racedays on the calendar, it is followed closely by the jewel on the crown of the Spring Racing program, the renowned Emirates Melbourne Cup Day (4 November). What started as a small day in 1861 – only attended by 4,000 people – is now one of the country’s most discussed and anticipated sporting events, with well over 120 countries and up to 700 million people around the world tuning in to watch 'the race that stops the nation™’. However, the action doesn’t stop with the Cup – the carnival continues with the opulent Crown Oaks Day (6 November), where fashion is the focus and champagne the drink of choice. Rounding off the week is the family friendly Emirates Stakes Day (8 November), which sees Flemington filled with picnic rugs, plus children's games and entertainment.

The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) will be the only venue to catch the amazing The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk (17 October – 8 February). The exhibition will feature more than 140 superbly crafted garments, in addition to photographs, sketches, stage costumes, excerpts from runway shows, film, television, concerts and dance performances, all created by internationally renowned designer Jean Paul Gaultier.

The 2014 Melbourne Spring Fashion Week (30 August – 7 September) offers a rich tapestry of events and experiences designed to celebrate all the colour, excitement and talent that Melbourne's fashion scene has to offer.

The exhibition will feature pieces ranging from the first dress created by the designer in 1971, to his latest haute couture and ready-to-wear collections – including costumes worn by Kylie Minogue and Beyoncé, plus dresses worn

by Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett. The NGV will be the only venue in Australia to show this remarkable and unconventional exhibition dedicated to the ground-breaking French couturier, making it a must for any fashionista or couture lover.

Festival Focus For art lovers, there is something magical about being in the city when Melbourne Festival (10-26 October) – one of the world’s major multi-arts festivals, takes over Melbourne’s theatres, galleries and performance venues.

Tell us about The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk.

The exhibition is a spectacular overview of Gaultier’s oeuvre, featuring the first dress created by the designer in 1971, his latest haute couture and ready-towear collections, costumes worn by Kylie Minogue and Beyoncé and haute couture dresses worn by the likes of Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Sarah Jessica Parker. All in all 140 superbly crafted garments are on show, in addition to photographs, sketches, stage costumes, excerpts from runway shows, film, television, concerts and dance performances. Above all, this will be a unique chance to see iconic pieces like Madonna’s corsets from the 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour and some of the most imaginative couture garments ever.

Jean Paul Gaultier has had a long history in fashion, why do you think he has made such an impact?

Broadly speaking, Gaultier has literally reshaped the vocabulary of fashion by recasting time-honoured classics into a new light, whether the bra, the stripe, the trench coat or skirts for men. But it’s more his attitude that has been so inspiring. In Gaultier’s world, everyone has their own sense of beauty and clothes have no gender, race or creed.

What can visitors expect from this Australian first exhibition?

From the very start the visitor will be immersed into a kind of ‘underworld’ of Gaultier’s inspirations appropriately named The Odyssey. This space is filled with fantastical Virgins, Mermaids and Sailors winking, murmuring, singing and talking, not to mention a mannequin of the man himself introducing the exhibition. Each room presents yet another experience. With nearly 40 years in fashion and a manic sense of creativity, there will be a lot of stories to tell.

What are your standouts of the exhibition?

The corsets are incredible; nobody does them better or takes them to a completely new level quite like Gaultier. Then the couture pieces, like when the beading mimics torn flesh or feathered stripes. But I have to say Gaultier’s couture tailoring is quite special, for me they channel the essence of the Parisienne.

What are your favourite pre and post exhibition haunts?

Well, this is a great opportunity to plug the NGV’s series of Friday Nights.

Almost every Friday night while the exhibition is on, there will be DJ’s, entertainment, food and drink.

Family Outing From Denmark’s Hans Christian Andersen, to puppets and a trip on the high seas, this is a season of family friendly art and theatre at Arts Centre Melbourne that is set to impress every member of the family.
