It’s been 18 years since Queensland and New South Wales met at the MCG, but this year the ground hosts Game II of the 2015 Holden State of Origin Series, where the long-time rivals will battle it out. Catherine’s Legacy Explore one of the world’s great museums, the Hermitage Museum of St Petersburg, and the legacy of the ruler of Russia’s Golden Age. Melbourne’s Cultural Centrepiece
More than the Masters
Melbourne Winter Masterpieces has been a part of the city’s arts and cultural landscape since 2004, and this year the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) welcomes Masterpieces from the Hermitage: The Legacy of Catherine the Great. More than 400 works from her personal collection will be on display, representing the foundation of the Hermitage’s collection and including outstanding pieces by Rembrandt, Velasquez and more.
Also on show at the NGV International, A Golden Age of China: Qianlong Emperor, 1736–1795, showcases treasures from Beijing’s Palace Museum and tells the story of China’s foremost art collector Qianlong Emperor, the longest living emperor in the country’s history. The exhibition displays paintings, ceremonial weapons, objets d’art and other palace treasures, and reveals the mystery and secrets of imperial life in the Forbidden City.
A prolific acquirer of art of the period, Catherine the Great’s collection reflects the finest art of the 18th century, and includes paintings, drawings, porcelain and other exquisite items. The exhibition design will feature interior furnishings, wallpapers and architectural details directly inspired by the Hermitage’s gallery spaces allowing visitors to feel as though they’re actually viewing the art inside the famous museum.
At The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Shifting Gear: Design, Innovation & the Australian Car displays 23 of the country’s most iconic vehicles as objects of art and design. It celebrates our nation’s proud history of automobile design and engineering, and looks ahead to the future of the Australian car industry.

My Melbourne Dr Ted Gott is the Senior Curator of International Art at National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), and if anyone knows how special this year’s Melbourne Winter Masterpieces, Masterpieces from the Hermitage: The Legacy of Catherine the Great is going to be, it’s him. The National Gallery of Victoria has a long and storied history of presenting ground-breaking exhibitions, and Masterpieces from the Hermitage: The Legacy of Catherine the Great ( July 31– November 8) is as breathtaking as they come. Some 450 outstanding works, paintings and artefacts from the 16th to 18th centuries by artists including Rembrandt, Rubens, Velázquez and Van Dyck will be on display. The exhibition invites visitors into the world of Catherine the Great—Russia’s legendary female leader — and arguably one of the world’s greatest art collections. Dr Ted Gott explores the exhibition.
Just how big a deal is this exhibition for the state of Victoria? It’s an enormous deal. It’s the grandest exhibition from the Hermitage collection in Russia to come to Australia. It is an exhibition that is colossal in ambition and scale, and embraces all sorts of ideas and objects. This show is equal to anything we’ve done so far, and more spectacular than many that have come through before it.
How long has it taken to put together? Negotiations for this show began five to six years ago. The logistics for a show like this are so enormous.
How much time should visitors set aside to do the exhibition justice? I would suggest spending at least one hour exploring it, but I would expect that you could easily pass two hours in the show without blinking an eye before realising the time. Then you can go, have a coffee and come back again!
Dr Gott’s favourites…
And where would you suggest visitors go to get that coffee?
View: Sitting on the Southbank terrace, looking over the river with a drink at sunset.
The coffee from Gallery Kitchen inside the gallery itself is fantastic. I’m not just spruiking; it’s some of the best in Melbourne!
Hideaway: I like to hide away in Reader’s Feast Bookshop in the old George’s building. You can sit, relax and read in an elegant, quiet and beautiful place.
Is there somewhere in the city that you go to look at other art? I love Young & Jackson’s, because I love Chloe. Every once in a while one has to go and pay one’s respects to Chloe. It’s fantastic to have that extraordinary masterpiece of late 19th century French salon paintings in our hotel. It’s a great story, a great painting and a lovely place; a place that I often take visitors for a surprise. Who would expect this masterpiece to be in the local pub?
Restaurant: Indian Tukka on the corner of Wellington Street and Victoria Parade, on the border of East Melbourne and Collingwood. I’ve been going there for 16 years.
Treat: A treat is a trip to the Queen Victoria Market, particularly the cheese shops in the deli. Memory: Rob’s Carousel Restaurant, which was in Albert Park in the 1970s. The centre of the restaurant was set up as a merry-go-round, so if you sat in an outside booth you could watch the restaurant turn. Childhood birthday parties at Luna Park were also always fun. Image (above): Peter Paul Rubens and workshop, Flemish 1577–1640, The Adoration of the Magi c.1620, oil on canvas, 235.0 x 277.5 cm, The State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg (Inv. № ГЭ-494) Acquired, from the auction of Collection Dufresne, Amsterdam, 1770. Kings of the North
If you thought Melbourne had seen enough football over the past year, with the World Cup, AFC Asian Cup and 10th season of the A-League, think again. Three of Europe’s most famous and successful clubs, Manchester City FC, Real Madrid CF and AS Roma, are coming to face off in the International Champions Cup presented by Audi at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
For the first time in 18 years, the MCG hosts Game II of the Holden State of Origin Series. With the Queensland Maroons taking on long-time rivals the New South Wales Blues, there’s no room for team allegiances—this is state versus state. After NSW’s droughtbreaking series win last year, can they make it back-to-back in 2015, or will Queensland wrestle back the crown?
With players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Frank Lampard and Francesco Totti ready to strut their stuff and show Melbourne what they’re made of, this is one of the most significant football events Australia has ever seen and is sure to have the ’G at capacity. The three-way tie begins on 18 July when Real Madrid faces off against Roma. On 21 July Roma plays Manchester City and the event concludes on 24 July when Manchester City takes on Real Madrid.
Corner Hotel Its reputation as a live music venue is unchallenged, but the Corner’s rooftop beer garden is hard to top when you’re after a pre-game beverage. Its proximity to the MCG means that even the fiercest of rival fans are happy to put aside their differences and buy each other a round. 57 Swan Street, Richmond | cornerhotel.com

RICHMOND DONE RIGHT
The London Tavern With a beer garden nearly big enough to play a footy game in, the London is an institution when it comes to that all-important pre-game beer. A great selection of drinks, an even better food menu and a congenial atmosphere combine to make it a great spot to meet. 238 Lennox Street, Richmond | thelondon.net.au Meatmother American BBQ joints have been popping up all over Melbourne, but one of the pioneers was Meatmother. The name gives a fair indication of the cuisine on offer, but a closer inspection of the menu reveals glorious sides and an unbeatable bacon sour cocktail. 167 Swan Street, Richmond | meatmother.com.au Feast of Merit Different from anything else on Swan Street, Feast of Merit is a communal dining house offering delicious seasonal produce, with an emphasis on local, ethical and sustainable ingredients. Giving Middle Easterninspired cuisine a Melbourne twist works — just follow the crowds. 117 Swan Street, Richmond | feastofmerit.com Noir There’s something timelessly classic about French food in Melbourne. Noir is the perfect example —a restaurant that doesn’t try too hard to be fancy, but succeeds in creating a warm ambience, perfect for a more intimate post-game celebration. 175 Swan Street, Richmond | noirrestaurant.com.au
Aussie Rules, OK? Melbourne’s sporting lifeblood is AFL, and the 2015 Toyota AFL Premiership Season is in full swing. With matches being played every weekend at the MCG and Etihad Stadium, footy has never been this big. Watch as Melbourne’s 10 teams throw everything on the line as they inch closer to season’s end and the 2015 Finals Series.

Strictly Ballroom the Musical
The Stage is Set
Melbourne’s year-round calendar of musical theatre — comedy, drama and classic family favourites —continues to light up stages across the city. All Aboard! After a stellar run on Broadway, comedy classic and nautical favourite Anything Goes visits Melbourne for the first time at the Princess Theatre. Over the years, Cole Porter’s 1930s musical hit has captivated millions with its delightfully ridiculous story of hijinks on the high seas, and this reworking has already won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival and Choreography. A hilarious tale of topsy-turvy relationships, mistaken identities and foiled plots, Anything Goes is also a showcase for some of Porter’s best-loved songs, including ‘You’re The Top’, ‘I Get A Kick Out Of You’ and ‘Anything Goes’. Catch this production, starring Todd McKenney, Caroline O’Connor and Gerry Connolly, before it sets sail.
Strictly Sensational Well into its extended season, Strictly Ballroom the Musical has literally had audiences dancing in the aisles during its run at Her Majesty’s Theatre. Recapturing the magic of the classic Aussie film Strictly Ballroom, this Baz Luhrmann-directed musical once again takes audiences behind the scenes of the competitive dance circuit to witness the blossoming of true love. This joyous production features classic songs from the film, including ‘Love is in the Air’ and ‘Time After Time’, as well as new tunes by Eddie Perfect and Sia. Become absorbed in a world of dance, competition and passion for a strictly limited time.
King of the Jungle Since wowing a generation of families as an animated film in 1994, The Lion King has gone on to become one of the most successful theatre productions ever staged. In fact, between the film and the musical, The Lion King is the top-earning title in box-office history. Now is your chance to see it in Melbourne, and relive this amazing tale once again. Be transported to the Serengeti Plains and follow Simba, the wide-eyed lion cub, on an epic journey to fulfil his destiny as King of the Pridelands. Of course, no production of The Lion King would be complete without unforgettable songs like ‘Circle of Life’, ‘Hakuna Matata’ and the Academy Award-winning ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight?’. THEATRE HOTSPOTS It’s just a quick walk from Melbourne’s major theatres to some of the city’s best dining options. The European An establishment entrenched in Melbourne’s haute cuisine scene, the European is next door to the Princess Theatre and perfect for that post-show culinary experience. Drawing on an entire continent for menu inspiration, its view of Parliament House is nearly as impressive as the food itself. 161 Spring Street | theeuropean.com.au Ombra Inspired by the salumerie of Italy, Ombra focuses on delivering the highest quality cured meats paired with an enviable array of drinks. It’s a worthy destination when you’re searching for a tasty treat or a hearty four- or six-course sharing meal, and is just strolling distance from Her Majesty’s and Princess Theatres. 76 Bourke Street | ombrabar.com.au Chin Chin The Southeast Asian menu spin — modelled on the famous hawker markets — and bustling dining room have given Chin Chin a reputation as a top spot for a great night out. Order some spicy dishes to share, pair with an Australian wine or one of the signature cocktails, and you’ll quickly discover why Chin Chin has become a Melbourne institution. 125 Flinders Lane | chinchinrestaurant.com.au Bomba Just around the corner from Her Majesty’s Theatre, you can imagine you’ve journeyed to a Spanish workers’ café, albeit a smart one. Bomba is all about simple plates of tapas bursting with flavour, with the added bonus of well-priced wines and an excellent range of sherry and vermouth. There’s also a rooftop bar if the weather is behaving. 103 Lonsdale Street | bombabar.com.au Image (right): Roberto Seba
