Festival of Fun

This autumn, it’s all about great food, creative fashion and spectacular sporting events.

Share Your Melbourne Moment

Feed Your Curiosity

It’s one of the biggest events of its type in the world and this year’s Melbourne Food and Wine Festival presented by Bank of Melbourne (16–25 March) focuses on community. Bank of Melbourne World’s Longest Lunch (16 March) heads west, where diners will feast at a 500-metre-long table on the banks of the Maribyrnong River at Footscray. On the same day, the Regional World’s Longest Lunches take place at Port Fairy and the Winton Wetlands. Chefs Matt Stone and Jo Barrett will run House of Food and Wine Hotel from Lindrum Hotel, where a highlight will be a series of zero-footprint dinners. There are plenty more events, including: River Graze (16–18 March) for strolling and sample bites, beers and wines along the Yarra River; Crawl ’n’ Bite (19–21 March), where guests visit three venues to sample a signature dish; and the ever-popular twocourse lunch with drink for $40 at venues across Victoria for Restaurant Express. w mfwf.com.au

There’s always something new on Melbourne’s dining scene. Brunetti has opened its latest outpost in Flinders Lane. Tuck into freshly fired pizza, Italian pastries and an Aperol spritz in the architectdesigned space. Chef Joe Grbac has launched Saxe, a sophisticated two-storey French diner, with bar downstairs and more formal eatery on the first floor. Another newcomer is Diesel Bar, where you’ll find a chic, all-day New York-style bar and eatery on the ground floor and a nightclub upstairs. w brunetti.com.au w saxe.com.au w dieselbar.melbourne

Here’s Cheers

Craft beer has stormed the scene, with microbreweries and specialty bars popping up across Victoria. Good Beer Week (11–20 May) celebrates the makers and their beverages, with more than 300 events taking place throughout the state. Take part in delicious degustations, masterclasses, parties and the huge GABS Beer, Cider & Food Festival (18–20 May). w goodbeerweek.com.au

Welcome to Melbourne

Siglo

He’s the star behind the stove and part owner of two of the hottest tables in town, Coda and Tonka. Both are located on what Adam D’Sylva calls “the Golden Mile”, a strip along Flinders Lane he always directs visitors to Melbourne towards. “There and to Little Vietnam along Victoria Street in Richmond and to markets like the one at South Melbourne,” he says. “Melbourne is a truly eclectic and world-class city. We have so much culture and diversity, coupled with great produce and talent.” At this year’s Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, Adam is one of the chefs preparing the World’s Longest Lunch at Footscray. “Sitting down for lunch with 1700 people along one long table is very special,” he says. “It’s a great day with so much atmosphere and a spectacular setting.” Here are some of Adam’s favourite places:

Cafe

I have my morning coffee in the courtyard at Trunk Diner, as it’s a such beautiful setting and the coffee is great, too.

Bar

You’re always guaranteed a good night on the terrace at Siglo, with that beautiful view over Parliament House.

Shop

That’s Amore is out of the city, but a must for any cheese lover. It’s an amazing deli that makes its own fresh cheeses. Don’t leave without trying the warm ricotta.

Hidden Gem

My favourite Chinese restaurant is Pacific BBQ House in Richmond. I hope I can still get in next time after giving away my secret!

Moomba

Melbourne’s Own Festival

A much-loved staple on the Melbourne events calendar, Moomba (9–12 March) returns to the banks of the Yarra River. The festival attracts more than one million people to enjoy its bustling carnival and family-friendly program of free entertainment, events and activities. Highlights include the Moomba Parade (12 March) — with its artistic, communityinspired floats — and the wacky Birdman Rally (11 March), when people dressed in costumes attempt to ‘fly’ across the water. Moomba also showcases the talents of local performers and the hospitality of Melbourne’s restaurants and shops. The Moomba Masters’ world-class watersports, and the pro scoot, skate and BMX competitions are also favourites in this sports-mad city. Sixty-four years on, Moomba is wise with age, steeped in tradition, but undoubtedly young at heart — just like the city it calls home. w moomba.melbourne.vic.gov.au

See the Wizard

Follow the yellow brick road to the Regent Theatre to see a favourite tale on the stage. The Wizard of Oz (from 15 May) in its musical form will captivate the whole family. As Dorothy goes over the rainbow you’ll see her make friends in the most unlikely places. This new production by Andrew Lloyd Webber even has new songs for those who’ve seen the show before. w wizardofozthemusical.com

Night Market Favourite

Join the party at Queen Victoria Market. Head to The Night Market (Wednesdays 5pm to 10pm, until 11 April), grab a cold drink and a plate of food then get down and dance to bands belting out tunes. Before you go, make sure you check out the stalls selling a range of cool and quirky local products. w thenightmarket.com.au

Such a Laugh

There’s nothing quite like a good chuckle, and you can have several every night during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (28 March – 22 April). Whether you’re into the biggest names in the industry, such as Aussie favourites like Wil Anderson and Celia Pacquola, or want to support newcomers, there are shows to suit. w comedyfestival.com.au

Fashion Fever

While many fashion events are industry affairs, the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival (1–18 March) is one for the fans. Across the city there are parades, parties and events, all of which are open to anyone who loves to find out what’s hot for the coming season. There is also an Ideas Program that will see a range of inspirational speakers take to the stage. To coincide with International Women’s Day, a morning forum (8 March) about creating a better working world will feature international best-selling author Liane Moriarty and cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr Nikki Stamp. Those interested in influencers (or how to become one) will love the new addition to the Ideas Program, Fashion Talks, focusing on a millennial audience and digital media. w vamff.com.au

Since she launched her label in 2004, Margie Woods has had a singular vision. “To inspire and deliver confidence through a considered and meaningful wardrobe,” she says, and Melbourne is the perfect city in which to do that. “Melbourne’s creative landscape has always been a little more underground, with many pockets of influence all fostering a unique vibe,” she says. At the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival, fans can see Viktoria & Woods’ autumn collection at Premiere Runway 1, sponsored by vogue.com.au. “VAMFF provides designers and emerging artists a platform to celebrate, communicate and collaborate on a broader scale and invites the consumer into our world,” says Margie. Here are some of Margie’s favourite places:

The Forum Theatre Shellie Tonkin

Many of the pieces on display have come from the Arts Centre Melbourne’s extensive collection, and include costumes and memorabilia items from Kylie Minogue, Nick Cave, Paul Kelly, the Skyhooks, AC/DC and many more. Others have been borrowed from collectors. The Vault is conceived thematically, rather than chronologically, and covers contemporary music from the beginnings of rock and roll in the 1950s right through to the current day, with a year-long tribute to 2017 ARIA Hall of Fame recipient Daryl Braithwaite.

The piece she’s most excited about, though, doesn’t come from a big name.

“The Australian Music Vault has been a dream for several decades,” says Janine. “Not just for me, but other figures in the music world, too. It was a dream to tell the “Roland S Howard’s guitar,” she stories of Australia’s music history says. “It’s never been on public in a really engaging way.”

Live Music Venue

Arts Centre Melbourne

The Cultural Hub

For more than 30 years, Arts Centre Melbourne has been a hub for story-telling through world-class theatre, dance, music, art and circus, and has thrilled audiences with a diverse program of local and international productions and exhibitions. Arts Centre Melbourne is much bigger than even most Victorians realise, comprising three venues on both sides of St Kilda Road: The Theatres Building has the impressive State Theatre, Playhouse and intimate Fairfax Studio; Hamer Hall is a premier venue for musical performances, including those by Melbourne Symphony Orchestra; and Sidney Myer Music Bowl is popular for open-air concerts. More than merely a place to see a show, this buzzing cultural precinct is a remarkable tourist attraction in its own right that can be explored and enjoyed in a variety of ways.

Sitting beneath one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks — the magnificent spire — Arts Centre Melbourne is at the heart of Australia’s largest performing arts precinct. More Than Meets the Eye

The Australian Music Vault is a free exhibition open daily showcasing Australian contemporary music. On Sundays (10am to 4pm), local artisans present their unique handmade goods at the Sunday Market on the Arts Centre Melbourne Lawn.

There are plenty of great places to eat and drink. The Barre is perfect for a pre-show wine, meal or late-night drink. For a quick coffee and cake break try Cento and Café Vic. At Hamer Hall, Bombini Buzz is serving micro-roasted Melbourne coffee and ice-cream during the day, morphing into a pre-show and late-night bar. Changing Weather, Changing Hues At 888 Collins, Melbourne’s weather influences the appearance of the building’s facade to create an epic, ever-changing artwork. Take a stroll around the Docklands after dark and you may notice a luminous newcomer. The facade of the 15-storey residential building 888 Collins, located on the corner of Bourke and Collins streets, is covered by 58,000 LED lights embedded into 35 full-height vertical fins flanking the triangular building. After dusk each day, a five-minute interpretative display of the next day’s weather is performed in lights every hour on the hour until midnight. A weather station on the roof of the building links to the Bureau of Meteorology’s weather feed, taking data to create patterns of colour that reflect real-time conditions and a more artistic interpretation of how the weather ‘feels’.

40

“Melbourne is known for its tempestuous and changeable weather,” explains artist Bruce Ramus, who worked with developer Lendlease to formulate the display, titled Light House. “We wanted to create an installation that would reflect the environment and beauty of the area, but also reflect some softness that allows people to connect with the space around them.” A pulsing red light across the top of the building indicates a forecast is about to begin, then the weather elements are shown. The background colour represents the temperature being forecast for the next day, followed by relevant weather conditions. It won’t replace the Bureau of

Meteorology website, but it does offer visitors to the Docklands a visually striking attraction that can be seen from as far away as the Bolte Bridge. “My role as an artist in this instance was to reflect the environment and the people who live there,” says Ramus. “We wanted to make it gentle. It is an artwork, not a billboard. I really enjoy seeing people’s faces when they see it light up for the first time.” w victoriaharbour.com.au/ lighthouse w lendlease.com w ramus.com.au

We’re proud to be home to some of Melbourne’s most iconic food stories

76

He came to Australia rich in pastry and café expertise.

GIORGIO ANGELÉ began his training in Rome at the ripe age of 10. In 1956, he came to Australia with the Italian Olympic team as a Pastr y Chef. After working a few years he migrated to Australia permanently and has been involved in the industr y ever since. He later acquired Brunetti where you can still find him in the kitchen baking delicious European-style sweets and desserts. Brunetti is a Melbourne food institution and with expansion across the city and international locations, Melbourne Airport is ver y lucky to have them situated in the newly built T4 Domestic Terminal.

The man behind Vue de monde took cooking classes in a girls school. SHANNON BENNETT was raised in Westmeadows in Melbourne. He attended Penleigh Essendon Grammar School where an opportunity at the local girls school to study Home Economics was too good to pass up. Shannon’s passion for cooking was further realised by trips to Europe where his uncle introduced him to the sophisticated world of restaurants. His Vue de monde restaurant quickly became a Melbourne icon and in 2010 he opened Café Vue at Melbourne International Airport as an option for international travellers. In 2011 he followed this up with Café Vue Express, extending the experience to all travellers. T2, Level 1 Departures.

Sarah and Damien’s Favourites

In The Know

The local legends give us their top picks for places to visit in Footscray:

Restaurant

Vietnamese restaurant Sapa Hills is only about 50 metres up the road. We go there so often and they come here so often, we almost have a food trade agreement.

Bar Tatanja Ross (On Jackson Street)

Sarah Ryan and Damien Shaw Owners, Bad Love Club Footscray is changing fast. City skyscrapers loom nearby and hoardings for developments are a regular sight. No two people are more aware of that than Sarah and Damien. “It’s inevitable really,” says Sarah. “There are people who don’t want Footscray to change because they love it as it is, but you can’t expect an area that’s 10 minutes from the city to not change.” “It’s a wonder it hasn’t happened sooner really,” adds Damien, who’s a lifelong resident of the western suburbs and has lived in Footscray for years. “It’s super diverse and a bit of everything rolled into one. It’s like nowhere else in the world I’ve come across.”

94

Bad Love Club Sensory Lab

When at a careers crossroads, it was only natural the duo would choose the neighbourhood to launch their own business. They wanted to do something different and, 10 months ago, Bad Love Club was born. It’s a quick-serve cafe for jaffles and coffee during the day and a bar serving cocktails, craft beer and baked goods — all Sarah’s handiwork — at night. “We just wanted to be our own bosses and have a bit of creative freedom,” says Damien.

Again, it’s just up the road, but Bar Josephine has great craft beer and it feels as though it’s been there forever, even though it only opened a year ago.

Secret

Not many people know about the Footscray Community Arts Centre, but it’s awesome and there’s always something amazing happening – the gallery shows the work of local artists.

Bendigo

Born when the gold rush came to this part of Victoria in the 1850s, Bendigo remains an impressive city, its wide streets lined with grand Victorian buildings. At Bendigo Art Gallery, see Marimekko: Design Icon 1951 – 2018 (3 March – 11 June), which traces the meteoric rise of this Finnish textile and fashion company with its bold, instantly recognisable designs. Jump on board the vintage Talking Tram to acquaint yourself with some of the town’s landmarks then make your way to The Woodhouse for char-grilled steaks or woodfired pizzas. w bendigotourism.com

Her job involves telling the story of democracy in our country, which began during the Eureka Rebellion in 1854, and one of the museum’s most important artefacts is the Eureka flag. “Every time I look at the flag I love it more,” says Cash. “As I contemplate its relevance and powerful symbolism, its meaning deepens and evolves. It also represents a remarkable tale of survival.” Here are some of Cash’s favourite places:

Enterprise Rent-A-Car will have you sorted with a comfortable and safe car that’s the right size for your travel party (think little and zippy or large and luxurious). Vehicle pick-up and drop-off is available at Melbourne Airport and in the city (Little Collins Street). w enterpriserentacar.com.au

Taxis

Taxis can be hired off the street, from designated taxi ranks or by phone/online bookings. There are taxi ranks all over the CBD (refer to the Melbourne City map on the inside back cover), including four safe-city taxi ranks for late-night travellers. Taxi fares vary based on distance, location and time of travel. You can use the taxi fare estimator on the Taxi Services Commission’s website to obtain an approximate cost. Between 10pm and 5pm, Victorian taxi drivers are allowed to ask for an upfront deposit for the trip fare. Melbourne’s major taxi companies are 13 CABS and Silvertop Taxis. Uber is another way to get around Melbourne. Download the Uber app on your smartphone then book a driver. Driving

Around Town Road Rules

Traffic laws in Victoria may be different to those in your home city. Below are some of the major traffic rules that apply in Victoria to keep road users safe and ensure traffic flows efficiently. ++ Drivers are required to carry a licence at all times. International Driver Licences are acceptable for up to three months, however you will require a Victorian Drivers Licence after this period. ++ Australians drive on the left-hand side of the road, which can be initially disconcerting for visitors used to driving on the right. ++ Drivers and passengers are required to wear seatbelts. Infants must be restrained in baby capsules and small children in an appropriate booster seat.

++ Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol carries serious penalties. In Australia, you are not permitted to drive a car if your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is 0.05 or higher. If you hold a probationary or provisional driver’s licence, your blood alcohol level must be zero at all times.

Traffic Near Trams

Cars share the roads with trams on many streets within Melbourne. With these trams come some important rules about driving near them: ++ Tram lanes are designated by a tram lane sign (that may indicate hours of operation) and continuous yellow line. You must not drive in a tram lane during the times it is operational, except for up to 50 metres before turning, so long as you do not obstruct the progress of a tram. ++ You may only overtake a tram on the left. ++ Do not drive past the rear of a tram stopped at a tram stop (where there is no safety zone, dividing strip or traffic island). ++ You must stop level with the rear of the tram and wait for people to get on and off. The tram doors must be closed again before proceeding.

Bicycle Lanes

Bicycle lanes are indicated by a bicycle lane sign and a continuous or broken white line. You must not drive in a bicycle lane during the times it is operational, except for up to 50 metres before turning or when parking.

Some particular driving manoeuvres that are used in Melbourne are described below.

Hook Turns

Due to tramlines running down the middle of major city streets, there are some intersections where cars turning right need to do so from the left lane. The vehicle remains there until the traffic lights for the road it’s entering turn green, then carefully executes its turn. See the website below for a short video demonstration of how to perform a hook turn. w onlymelbourne.com.au

U-turns

To perform a U-turn, a driver makes a 180-degree turn to head back in the direction from which they came. The simple rule to remember is drivers performing U-turns are required to give way to other vehicles and pedestrians. In Victoria, drivers are allowed to make U-turns at intersections with or without traffic signals and at breaks in the median unless there is a ‘No U-turn’ sign. Visit the VicRoads website For more information about Victoria’s road laws and guidelines for appropriate child restraints. w vicroads.vic.gov.au

131

Useful Information

++ Speed limits are clearly marked (generally 50km/h or 60 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h on open roads) and police operate speed safety cameras across Victoria.

Driving is an efficient way to get around during your time in Melbourne, but read on to familiarise yourself with our road rules before taking to the street.
