Boxing Day Test

Ashes to Ashes Everyone’s favourite sporting rivalry goes into round two this summer. Earlier in the year it went England’s way, but the Australian cricketers will be looking for revenge on home shores during this Ashes clash. From independent theatre companies performing new works, to internationally recognised dance companies and visual artists, there's something on for everyone, every night of the week. This year sees the return of White Night Melbourne (22 February), a feast of art, performance and live music that takes over city spaces from sunset to dawn. Involving more than 130 artists, Melbourne Now (until 23 March) is the NGV’s most ambitious exhibition to date. The Festive Spirit Melbourne celebrates Christmas in its own way. It begins with the lighting of the Christmas tree in City Square (29 November) accompanied by a free concert and an appearance by Santa. City Square will be renamed Christmas Square and hold festivities throughout the month of December. Hook Turns Don’t be alarmed. Due to tramlines running down the middle of major city streets, there are some intersections where cars turning right must do so from the left lane. The vehicle remains there until the traffic lights for the road it’s entering turn green, then it carefully executes its turn. This manoeuvre minimises congestion on the roads. Ferdydurke was the first bar he entered when he arrived in the middle of the night – all his bags in tow, and it was clearly meant to be as he now works at this popular watering hole. Tell us about Ferdydurke... It’s a special bar for me because it is eclectic, playful and stimulating in style, music, drinks and the people you find there. My theory is that some of that comes from the polish novel which is Ferdy's namesake, Ferdydurke by Witold Gombrowicz, the surrealist 1937 story of a man cast back into youth and immaturity.
