MELBOURNE in Winter
Official Visitor Guide Melbourne Winter Masterpieces – Degas: A New Vision
MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER Melbourne lights up in winter – kindled by world-class arts and cultural experiences and major sporting events. Among the key events making Melbourne the destination is the return of arch enemy England who take on the Wallabies in a Rugby Union Test match at AAMI Park in June, with soccer fans at Etihad Stadium later that month to see the Socceroos play Greece. Feel the roar as some of Europe’s best – Juventus FC, Tottenham Hotspur and Atlético de Madrid – meet home-town heroes Melbourne Victory FC in the International Champions Cup at the MCG in July. Melbourne Winter Masterpieces sees the beautiful work of Edgar Degas on display from 24 June until 18 September, while across town, Jurassic World: The Exhibition goers will get closer to dinosaurs than ever before. Uniquely Melbourne Melbourne is a one-of-a-kind city with some quirks that are occasionally hard for a visitor to fathom. Here are all the tips and tricks, so you’ll know exactly what the locals are talking about. KEEP YOUR CUP Disposable coffee cups are harmful to the environment, so dine in and enjoy a break. Made in a range of funky colours, they make a perfect take-home souvenir. »» keepcup.com ON TRACK Exploring the city? THE TAN Melbourne has a number of beautiful green spaces, and the Tan is a 3.8km running track that winds its way through some of the best. Popular day and night with locals and visitors, it follows the Yarra River and circles King’s Domain and the Royal Botanic Gardens. The lap record – 10 minutes and 12 seconds – was set by long-distance runner Craig Mottram in 2004. Good luck beating that! »» onlymelbourne.com.au/tan-track AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL If you hear Melburnians talking about Pies and Demons in the same sentence, do not be alarmed. AMINA LEE JEWELLERY & ACCESSORIES DESIGNER
D
esigner Amina Lee and her twin sister Nadia run the jewellery and accessories label Aminalee. In 2011, they began trading at the Queen Victoria Market and soon after settled into a permanent location on String Bean Alley. Now, with winter arriving, they’ll be part of the QVM Night Market, which takes place each Wednesday evening between June and August.
CAFÉ: The Cornershop at Yarraville is beautiful little café, with a relaxed atmosphere and honest, wholesome food. It’s my favourite breakfast spot.
“I’d have to say the food and being surrounded by the amazing aromas from around the world,” says Amina, when asked why she loves working at the Night Market. “There’s nothing like it in Melbourne. It’s special on nights when it’s cold, but the atmosphere is alive and you’ve got a hot beverage to keep you warm while you’re watching amazing live talent and street performers.”
COFFEE: The first thing you’ll notice at Market Espresso in the Queen Victoria Market is the amazing number of people who come here. The coffee is always great and the staff are super friendly.
We asked Amina about some of her other favourite Melbourne places.
RESTAURANT: It would have to be Yong Green Food on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy. The vegetarian and vegan food is richly flavoured and the raw desserts are incredible!
SHOP: I love secondhand bookshops, especially because they are becoming a rarity these days. Already Read Bookshop in Fitzroy is jam-packed from floor to ceiling. I love spending an hour or two there and I’ve always walked out with something I am super excited to get stuck into. EVENT: Second only to the QVM Night Markets is the Melbourne International Film Festival. It’s a chance to visit the heart of the city and enjoy screenings of both local and international cinema. TREAT: A strawberry deluxe waffle from The Waffle Club in String Bean Alley. It’s no surprise that almost everyone notices the smell while they’re shopping here. »» For more information on Aminalee, visit: aminalee.com.au

AFTERNOON DELIGHT Forget about lunch and instead enjoy the sweetest way to spend an afternoon: partaking in high tea. At the Hotel Windsor, they’ve been serving dainty sandwiches, scones and cream and delectable pastries for more than 130 years. Also delightfully traditional is the spread at Hopetoun Tea Rooms, where savouries, sweets and fruit are presented on a three-tiered stand. More contemporary is newcomer Bibelot. Apart from displaying decadent pastries, this European-inspired dessert bar also has a beautiful high tea salon, decked out with emerald-hued banquettes and armchairs. It’s a little different from most English-style high teas, with cured meats, French cheeses and pâté, served alongside miniature versions of gateaux. »» The Hotel Windsor, 111 Spring Street thehotelwindsor.com.au »» Hopetoun Tea Rooms, Shop 1 & 2, Block Arcade, 282 Collins Street hopetountearooms.com.au »» Bibelot, 285–287 Coventry Street South Melbourne bibelot.com.au Bibelot, South Melbourne
Belle's Hot Chicken, Fitzroy
THE AMERICAN WAY Melbourne is having a moment. Everyone seems to have fallen in love with barbecue ribs, fried chicken and US-style burgers. At Meatmother, the best locally sourced meat is smoked over native hardwood chips. Order pulled pork with braised beans, Wagyu brisket with burnt eggplant and, of course, mac and cheese. Nashville’s finest fried bird is served in Fitzroy at Belle’s Hot Chicken. Choose the heat level of your wings or dark meat (drumstick and thighs), but beware: Really ***** Hot is just that. Tuck into burgers, hotdogs, fries and milkshakes, surrounded by retro video-gamethemed decor, at 8bit. The loaded fries – with cheese sauce, bacon, pickles, grilled onions and jalapeños – are epic. »» Meatmother, 167 Swan Street, Richmond meatmother.com.au »» Belle’s Hot Chicken, 150 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy belleshotchicken.com »» 8bit, 231 Swanston Street eat8bit.com.au Image (above & bottom right): Josie Withers Photography

For those looking to impress, the intimate Everleigh is the place to be. It’s table service only, and every element, from juicing fruit to carving ice, is performed to order. Classics like fizzes and sours make up the short list, or you could leave decisions in the morethan-capable hands of the bar staff.
DELHI STREETS Pani puri (crispy, spicy cracker balls), samosas and chicken tikka are just some of the popular choices at this colourful, casual diner.
Its big sister Chin Chin restaurant upstairs seems to have a constant line of hungry diners waiting to get in, but those in the know head down the laneway to enter Go Go Bar. Seasonally inspired cocktails and tasty Thai snacks are the order of the day in this cool, dimly lit den.

Expand Your Mind Book tickets to world-class productions or get down to an up-and-coming local band. Whatever your idea of culture may be, there’s a theatre, gallery or club to please. ON THE STAGE Big shows and small, international companies and productions from groups closer to home – for those who love theatre and performing arts, Melbourne is a cultural magnet. One of the world’s most innovative dance troupes, Nederlands Dans Theater, is returning to Arts Centre Melbourne for a short season (22–25 June). For anyone who loves acrobatics and opera, the new show Il Ritorno (The Return) from the Circa Ensemble is sure to please (Arts Centre Melbourne, 17–20 August). The Melbourne Theatre Company’s winter season includes David Hare’s contemporary classic Skylight (18 June–23 July) and the adaptation of Craig Silvey’s novel Jasper Jones (1 August–9 September). »» Arts Centre Melbourne, 100 St Kilda Road artscentremelbourne.com.au »» Circa circa.org.au »» Melbourne Theatre Company mtc.com.au Image (below): Roberto Seba

MELBOURNE’S AMAZING ARCHITECTURE From the outside they look spectacular, but many of Melbourne’s landmark buildings can also be visited and toured. The Old Treasury Building is considered one of the finest 19th century buildings in the country, and there are exhibits and exhibitions on show in many of its rooms, including the old gold vaults. Just up the road, Parliament House is open to the public during sittings, and there’s the chance to go behind the scenes during its public and architecture tours. Impressive is the only word you can use to describe the domed reading room at the State Library of Victoria, which opened in 1854. As well as books, the library holds a huge collection of artefacts often shown in its galleries. »» Old Treasury Building, 20 Spring Street oldtreasurybuilding.org.au »» Parliament House, Cnr Spring & Bourke Streets parliament.vic.gov.au »» State Library of Victoria, 328 Swanston Street slv.vic.gov.au

SOUND ADVICE Whether you’re into jazz or indie rock, Melbourne is the place to listen up. Considered the music capital of Australia, there are venues big and small hosting gigs every night of the week. The sister venue to New York’s famous Birdland, Bird’s Basement, opened earlier this year and features the best in contemporary and traditional jazz from all over the world. Rock and roll is usually the feature act at the Corner Hotel, but for great acoustics and edgier bands and DJs head to Howler, a cool indoor-outdoor bar at the back of a car park in Brunswick. »» Bird’s Basement, 11 Singers Lane birdsbasement.com »» Corner Hotel, 57 Swan Street, Richmond cornerhotel.com »» Howler, 7–11 Dawson Street, Brunswick h-w-l-r.com Image (top, left): Cameron Murray

Everything, from the bread to the gelato, is made in house each day, and there’s even a rooftop bar for a relaxing pre-dinner drink. There’s no excuse for not eating well at Hawthorn Common. WEST SEE & DO Look into the night sky during the day, learn how to build and run a city and try your skills as a soccer goalkeeper at Scienceworks. This interactive museum is as fun as it is educational. When the sun goes down, join Lantern Ghost Tours’ creepy Ghosts of the Old City tour around Williamstown. You’ll visit abandoned morgues and forgotten cemeteries while learning about drunken sailors and convicts in Victoria’s most historic seaport. Bookings are essential.

EAT & DRINK Get a taste of Texas at Up In Smoke. Plenty of classics – pulled pork, beef ribs, hot wings – come out of the huge smoker and there are plenty of craft beers on tap. English pastry chef Matt Forbes has plied his trade at such big-name international restaurants as The Waterside Inn and Noma, but his latest venture is a suburban café. Cobb Lane serves up delectable donuts and pastries but the seasonal menu with the likes of a British breakfast of black pudding, bacon and scotch egg are top notch, too.

At ski resorts like Falls Creek, Mount Hotham and Mt Buller, there’s plenty of snow for skiers and boarders. BALLARAT The history of Victoria starts in this area, where thousands of people flocked during the 1850s to seek their fortune. These days, the gold-rush era is captured at Sovereign Hill, while the importance of the town in the development of democracy in Australia is celebrated at M.A.D.E, the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka. It is your ticket to travel on Melbourne’s public transport network, and regional train services across Victoria, from Melbourne to Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong, Traralgon and Seymour, as well as local bus services around these centres. If you are travelling beyond the myki-enabled area you’ll need to purchase a V/Line paper ticket. You can also ride the iconic W-class free City Circle Tram (number 35) that will take you on a historic tour of Melbourne’s CBD, complete with automated commentary. ENJOY REGIONAL VICTORIA For convenient and comfortable services to regional Victoria, hop on a V/Line train or coach. Simply make your way to V/Line’s passenger hub at Southern Cross Station and someone there will be happy to help you plan your next getaway. If you’re not familiar with driving in Victoria, make sure you review these road rules: • In Australia, cars travel on the left of the road. • Speed is in km/h, not m/h, and speeding is illegal. Heavy fines are imposed if you are caught above the limit by police or speed cameras. • Seat belts are compulsory in front and back seats. Children must be harnessed in a safety restraint. • When turning right at an intersection you must always give way to vehicles travelling left and any pedestrians crossing the road. • Drivers are required to carry a licence at all times. International driver licences are acceptable for up to three months, however you will require a Victorian license after this period. Image (left): udeyismail / Shutterstock
