Allmannajuvet. 1. ALLMANNAJUVET In conjunction with the establishment of National Tourist Route Ryfylke, renowned architect Peter Zumthor has designed impressive new facilities by the old Allmannajuvet zinc mines in Sauda: an exhibition gallery to show the mining history in a striking new way, a café and service facility, and parking for visitors. The café, an exciting building with a great view, is open in summer. www.saudaferie.no Architecture in Ryfylke There are other attractions of remarkable design in addition to Allannajuvet. At Sand, the architects Rintala Eggertson Arkitekter AS, have designed the bridge Høsebrua and at Nesflaten, the architect Geir Grung has designed a power station and Energihotellet – all in the functional style.

4. KJERAG Towering to an impressive 1094 metres, Kjerag is the highest peak near the Lysefjord. A trail from Øygardstøl, situated by Lysevegen road far above the village of Lysebotn, takes you to the mountain plateau. The truly daring climb is out onto Kjeragbolten, a boulder wedged into a crack 1000 metres above the fjord. Allow 6 hours for this demanding 10-km hike, which climbs 570 m. Kjerag may also be seen from a boat on the Lysefjord.. Season: June-October

Salmon safari. 3. SALMON SAFARI Float in the current down the river from Mo Laksegard! Don’t be surprised if you suddenly see trout and salmon up close. Through the diving mask you are able to study the wild salmon in their natural element. This is a chance to literally feel the “strong” river on your body. To see wild salmon in their right element, free, you will never forget. You don’t catch the salmon - you swim with them! www.molaks.no

Flørli.

6. FLØRLI 4444 Flørli is a roadless hamlet serviced by four ferries per day in the summer. It lies deep into the spectacular Lysefjord, close to the Kjerag bigwalls. Flørli is popular for its 4444 steps right up the mountain - the longest wooden stairway in the world. It is also known for its hydropower history in the power hall you can visit the exposition and enjoy the summer-open Power Café. You can also stay the night at a hostel or a holiday apartment in Flørli. www.florli.no

The National Tourist Route Ryfylke, which is the main thoroughfare through Ryfylke, runs from Oanes by the famous Lysefjord in the south and ends at Hårå in Røldal in the north. It runs along the roads Rv. 13 and Fv. 520 and is 260 km long in distance. Travelling along this scenic path gives you an ideal opportunity to experiencing the southernmost fjords. The tourist route invites you into Fjord Norway showing you a landscape of varied, striking and lush scenery, where green, tranquil archipelagos and well maintained cultural landscapes are superseded by screes of stone, polished cliffs, fjords and mountains. Whilst driving along the road, you will find places to stop along the way with both stunning natural beauty as well as interesting cultural mementos from ancient times. Experience the past brought to life at Landa prehistoric village and study the prehistoric rock carvings at Solbakk in Strand. Explore Årdal old church and the old Kolbeinstveit farmstead by Suldalsvatnet lake. Count the number of fish swimming at the Salmon Studio in Sandsfossen and feel the spray from Svandalsfossen waterfall near Sauda! You can experience peace and quiet in Ryfylke on a walk in the mountains or sightseeing on the fjord.

Coming from the south, Ryfylke is your first meeting with the fjords. The Lysefjord with Preikestolen and Kjerag are great for hiking, or you can simply enjoy the sights from a boat on the fjord.

Solspeilet. 5. SOLSPEILET - THE NORWEGIAN STONEHENGE On the islet of Klungholmen near Jørpeland village is a stone circle, an artwork by the Norwegian artist named Stian H. Skjæveland. At the centre of the eight-metre circle of 12 standing stones is a towering steel obelisk decorated with symbols, runes and ornaments, many derived from the Oseberg Viking ship. Klungholmen may be visited year round.
