It’s hard to believe sometimes, the power of octane. Folks said getting the F-35 on our winter cover issue would be all but impossible. Some people it seems are just oblivious to the lure of petrol. Just a few short months ago we were discussing features for our Spring issue when Motorfest’s own Libertine introduced the idea of taking a road trip to Birmingham to cover Confederate Cycles.

Now it seems we’ve really started something. When local business development leaders caught wind of the Motorfest article, they couldn’t help themselves to start a court’n Confederate after reading the Libertine’s gushing account of this good old fashion, American made motorcycle company. Who knows, before long we may just have to be printing up some “MADE IN DESTIN, USA” stickers. - Frank Berte

JETSET A WORD FROM THE EDITOR

The C-130 above is the back up carrier support for the Blue Angels. It’s not the normal painted version, Fat Albert, off getting cleaned at the time of the shoot, but it strikes me. In the hands of the talented men and women who operate, support and pull maneuvers in this flying ox cart, it matters little in what instrument they find themselves - what it comes down to is how they dance. Turns out they can pull a U’ie with this beast in a clean 4000 ft circle. Landing in a combat situation the 130 can execute a cork-screw drop in, from a cruising altitude to a tiny safe landing zone in just a few delicate turns. 10 motorfestmagazine.com FALL 2012

LIFE IN THE FAST LANE By Frank Berte

When we lost Tommy Shelton last month it made me stop and think. His life was fascinating, it burned bright like a brilliant star and left a glow that seems to have touched so many. He truely lived his life in the fast lane. Our lives would never have been what

they are today if it wasn’t for him. While researching a story on the Blue Angels I was given the opportunity to fly with the Team RC Stunt crew. They’re basically the opening band for the Angels. From the back seat of the heavily modified, 1200lbs, 5.3 liter air cooled 4 banger, I experienced 2G and neggative G. There’s no everyday experience that is the equivalent of hurtling towards the earth faster than gravity. Fighter pilots get it. Drag racers get it. I feel Tommy got it. He lived it everyday. So what then or better yet who are the Jet Set. It’s not the brand of pants you wear or the kind of car you drive. It’s how you live your life. It’s how you roll the dice you’re given. Anyone can be alive but you need a spark to truly live. Motorfest is about that spark. Life will get you to the prom, it’s up to you to dance.

tribute toTommyShelton DESTIN, Florida — One of Destin’s own died in a speedboat accident near Crab Island Saturday August 11, 2012. When Tommy passed away, we knew immediately what direction this issue had to take. Putting together the front cover of the magazine was about honoring a man who touched the lives of every one in Destin. Still hard to believe he’s gone, but we have no doubt that Tommy’s memory will live on through his family, friends, and through his larger than life personality.

On August 2nd , the day of this Motorfest Magazine front cover photo shoot I learned a lot from Tommy, about grace, balance, flow and the love of life. Through his trenchant wisdom (not, perhaps, a quality he would claim, but one he had in abundance) he made a real and concrete difference in my life. The Motorfest staff will miss him very much, and we are grateful to have had the opportunity to work with him and know him and his family. - Team Motorfest

People have goals and dreams; not everyone gets to accomplish them, one person who has is Mike, he is Magic. Serving nine long years as a Military Policeman in the U.S.Army, fighting for our country in Operation Iraqi Freedom, he came back to emerald waters a changed man. Then he knocked around at different jobs, as many people do. Mike and I went to the 2009 Thunder Beach Fall Rally together, and came across an eye-popping Pacific Blue Denim Harley at one of the vendors. Mike bought the 2007 FLHX Street Glide, bone stock. A few months later in January, 2010, Mike

attended WyoTech in Daytona Beach and within nine months graduated, one of the top students. His biggest rush he got out of school: “Learning to do something new and enjoyable while making new friends that come from the same background and have the same mind-set.” Shortly after returning to Northwest Florida, he was employed at a local, independent bike shop. Something was still missing; he wanted to be a Harley technician, that’s why he went to school. After a year and a half at the local shop, Mike received a phone call from the owner of Heritage Cycles in Fort Walton Beach offering him a position. After a grueling five seconds of fore thought,

MAGICMECH 4 THE LOVE OF AByWRENCH Brittan Motors

© SnapShotinTimePhotography@yahoo.com he accepted the offer and started four days later. What does he love about working at Heritage Cycles? “Learning new things every day; I tell people if you’re not learning something new all the time, you’re doing something wrong. I am constantly doing whatever it takes to learn more and to better myself, to be valuable to my employer. And it lets the customer know that a qualified technician is working on their motorcycle and doing it right. Also, looking around the shop and seeing nothing but Harley Davidson around me is a bonus. We have a good crew working in the service department; I enjoy working alongside every one of them. We help each other out and they have been there for me numerous times when I had a question or needed assistance. I definitely see good things working there.”

Since he bought it, Mike has upgraded many things on his bike changing the stock bars to 16 inch black powder coated bars along with the floor boards. Basically, anything he could, at this point, is powder coated black. The bike also has an aftermarket H.I.D. headlight from BadDad Custom Motorcycle Finishes based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Slowly, the upgrading continues. As Mike says, “They are always a work in progress; you are never completely satisfied.” Everything chrome will be powder coated black. Mike also plans to upgrade the engine from the stock 96 motor to a 103 stage 4 kit. He plans on adding extended saddle bags and a rear fender from BadDad. This bike is not going anywhere but Mike does plan on building a Pan Head Bobber from the frame up one day!

turbo diesel-powered

Cessna Skylane TAKING SPEED TO THE SKYS Responding to concerns that Avgas is growing more expensive and harder to find in some parts of the world, Cessna used AirVenture to unveil a Jet A-powered version of its Skylane. The turbocharged diesel Skylane uses a 230-horsepower Safran engine that burns 11 gallons per hour in cruise flight. Not only is Jet A often more than a dollar less per gallon than Avgas, but the diesel Skylane will burn 30 to 40 percent less fuel than the conventional Skylane. The new diesel Skylane will start deliver-

ies sometime after March 2013, at which time it2012 will replace the Summer 4.28.12 Issue # Avgas-powered Skylane. It is priced at $515,000, including the Garmin G1000 glass cockpit. The new Skylane is the first singleengine piston plane to be available with a diesel engine, Cessna said, though similar engines have been available on small twins like the Diamond TwinStar for several years. Cessna said the new Skylane will cruise at 155 knots and have a range of more than 1,000 miles.

We caught an impressive Paparazzi shoot of the Real Hooks Band at Grand Blvd in Sand Destin Fl. Driving a 2012 convertible Maserati luxury sports car. The Real Hooks (the family and band name) have been a family forever. They began to “jam” with each other at a very early age. It wasn’t until 2009, at Kyle’s suggestion, that the 4 Hooks Siblings decided to officially become a band. What started as 4 brothers and sisters goofing around has now evolved into The Real Hooks we know today. They got their first opportunity to play a few songs live as the featured entertainment at the Miss American Coed Pageant held in the Grand Ballroom in front of 500+ fans at the Hilton at Disney. They immediately booked their first Full Live Show as the opening act for Allstar Weekend of Disney’s Hollywood Records. HANG IN THERE LIKE HAIR IN A BISCUIT. SEC DOMINATION

MOTORFEST NEWS GERMAN ACTRESS FRENCH RACE

BOLD PREDICTIONS FOR THE 2012 SEASON By Brad Bradford

As a former college football coach at the University of Alabama and the University of Louisville, the summer and upcoming fall and football season brings excitement to those of us who live in SEC country. The 2012 season is expected to see major changes with the addition of Missouri and Texas A&M to the family. Both can expect a rude awakening. The 2011 season proved once again that the best two teams, LSU and Alabama played for all the marbles and the best team dominated in New Orleans. The SEC continues to be the dominate conference with the remaining conferences playing for the silver medal. WHY IS THE SEC THE DOMINATE CONFERENCE? As the former recruiting coordinator at the University of Alabama, I can answer this with one word: recruiting. The lifeblood of a football team is recruiting. It is no longer a five month affair but is now done on a daily basis, year round. The coaches in the SEC do it better than anyone. When Nick Saban, Les Miles, or Steve Spurrier come to a high school, it is a big deal. The on-campus camps give the staffs an advance chance to get a better evaluation on the kids. The more times that a staff can get a recruit, his family and his high school coach on campus, the better the odds are of getting that recruit. The facilities which include the stadium, weight room, and the academic support help influence a high school recruit’s decision. If a recruiter wants to visit with a high school coach in the south, you can usually find him in

MCQUEEN

MACHINE

Steve McQueen’S 911 sells AT $1.3m Famed supporting star of the greatest racing movie of all time, Le Mans, changed hands recently to the tune of one and a half million dollars at RM’s annual sale at Monterey. It also turned the odometer as company’s 200th million-dollar-plus auctioned car. Sold originally for a hair over 8,000 bucks, this wonderful example of first generation 911 power claims a top speed of 145 mph and runs a healthy 180 bhp. McQueen reportedly loved this little car, driving the crew around the French countryside for beer and other assundries. He brought the car home to California and kept it with his full collection for a short time. The second owner held the car for over 34 years.

The McQueen Machine came complete with an AM/FM radio, leather, and electric sunroof, tinted windows and ice cold air conditioning for those warm California summers. The most epic scene from Le Mans including the 911 has to be at the very beginning where car and driver are involved in a trippy dream state run along public roads that are closed once a year for the big race. In those brief frames Steve’s dialog is minimal while the 911’s engine seems to speak to every straight, curve and dip. Then there are the long awkward pauses where he just stares into his Tag Heuer like he sees the solution to all life’s problems, the Porsche then seems to be the answer. A well bought classic.

the field house all day working on football related activities. If you want to visit with a high school coach in Illinois, come back after 3:00 p.m. after he finishes teaching his 5 English classes. Some states outside of the SEC map don’t even have high school spring training. The size and speed of the defensive front 7 of SEC teams forces other teams to adjust their game plan which further allows SEC teams to win and win big. FALL 2012 motorfestmagazine.com

MOTORFEST NEWS

WILL MISSOURI AND TEXAS A&M CHANGE THE SEC? Very little. Texas A&M will probably fare better in the long run since they already play a more physical SEC style brand of football. High school football in Texas and the state’s population will allow it to compete better in this league. The only problem with A&M is that it has to compete in the already brutal SEC West while Mizzou gets to play in the now watered down East. Missouri’s wide open offense will be difficult to defend but its offensive line is the exact same size as Alabama’s linebackers were last year. They will have to recruit bigger and faster on defense to compete on a weekly basis. There is a huge difference in playing LSU, Alabama, Florida and Arkansas as opposed to Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and Colorado on a weekly basis. HOW WILL THE SEC EAST PLAY OUT? 1. Georgia 2. Florida 3. South Carolina 4. Missouri 5. Vanderbilt 6. Tennessee 7. Kentucky. Georgia will win it by default as they did last year because of the schedule. Will Muschamp at Florida will surprise some people because of his work ethic and recruiting advantage in the big state of Florida. South Carolina will miss Ellis Johnson as its defensive coordinator who took the head coaching job at Southern Miss. His defense kept the Gamecock’s in all the games last year. Look at Steve Spurrier’s great teams at Florida and they always had a dominating defense which allowed him to take more chances on offense. HOW WILL THE SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME PLAY OUT? Alabama will once again dominate Georgia in Atlanta, 28-3. Kirby Smart, the Tide’s defensive coordinator knows the Bulldogs and their offensive schemes better than anyone. Alabama has the most depth in the league due to top recruiting classes for the last 5 years, its weight program and the “process” that Nick Saban has implemented. HOW WILL THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME PLAY OUT IN MIAMI? Alabama

will play Southern Cal in Miami. Nick Saban is familiar with Lane Kiffin, the Trojan’s head coach. Lane’s dad, Monte is the defensive coordinator and one of the best in the business. Alabama’s tough schedule will benefit the Tide in this game. The first half will be close but Alabama will win 21-17.

ROGER THIS

KNOW BEFORE YOU FLY Most of us learn to use the word “Roger” early in our aviation careers. It means we heard what the other person said. So what happens when there’s a problem on the airfield, we tell the controller that we need to do something and they say “Roger?” A C-210 received clearance to taxi across Runway 1/19. En-route, the C-210 pilot advised that the aircraft just blew a tire. The pilot asks to exit the aircraft to inspect the wheel. The Tower authorized the pilot’s request. At this time, a C-172 reported inbound with a request for full stop landings or touch and go’s on Runway 1. The Tower cleared the C172 as requested. (Que runway incursion) The C-210 pilot came back on the frequency stating the wheel had come apart. The C210 pilot said if he moved the aircraft it would do damage and requested to go to an FBO. (Getting to the FBO would require a runway crossing.) The Tower responded “roger.” The pilot responded, “Thank you very much.” The Tower then observed two men walking towards the runway. The Tower told the inbound C-172 to go around and enter right traffic for Runway 5. It appears that when the pilot made his request to go to the FBO, he expected the Tower to give him a “Yes” or a “No”, when presented with a simple, “Roger,” he forgot his early training -and started hiking! Remember that crossing any runway, whether in an airplane, a vehicle, or on foot, always requires a specific authorization from ATC.

Don’t squat with your spurs on! Off the beaten path, The Outpost at Black Creek has become a regular run for bikers around the Florida Panhandle. I pulled into the Outpost. Bikers wear leather because they know average cagers would just as soon run them down as look at ‘em, they have to be intimidating. Their chrome glistened in the sun as I sauntered out of my 2012 Honda Civic and started snapping these photos. The band was belting out rockin’ tunes. Suddenly they stopped. Rusty, the drummer screamed out “If you don’t know him, that dude taking pictures is Alabama Charlie from Motorfest Magazine.” All eyes were on me. I was nervous, till my country instincts kicked in. People are all the same, so just in case you find yourself out of sorts I thought I’d share a little wisdom with you... The Biker Code: You don’t need decorated words to make your point. Nope. Say it plain. Save some breath for breathin’. Don’t interfere with something that ain’t botherin’ you. If you find yourself in a hole, stop diggin’. Never grumble. If you’re ridin’ ahead of the herd, look back to make sure they’re still there. It doesn’t matter how long the ride is, it’s how well you ride it. Always drink upstream from the herd. Never kick a fresh turd on a hot day. When you get up in the morning put on your Stetson. Don’t worry about biting off more than you can chew. Your mouth is probably a whole lot bigger than you think. When it comes to cussin don’t swallow your tongue; use both barrels and air out your lungs. Don’t get mad at somebody who knows more than you do. It ain’t their fault. Talk low, talk slow, don’t say too much. You ain’t learin’ nothin’ if your mouth is a-jawin’. If you want to forget all your troubles, take a walk in a brand-new pair of boots. The wildest critters live in the city! Trust everybody in the game, but always cut the cards. The quickest way to double your money is to fold it over and put it back in your pocket. Don’t let so much reality into your life that there’s no room left for dreamin’. Makin’ it in life is kinda like bustin’ broncs: you’re gonna get thrown a lot. The simple secret is to keep gettin’ back on. Go after life as if it’s something that’s got to be roped in a hurry before it gets away. Never miss a chance to rest your horse. Don’t squat with your spurs on!

PAPAS GOT W BAT E N D N A R B A

TMO A B Atomic Batteries to Power, Turbines to Speed! By Jeffrey Osborn If you are anywhere near or over fifty years old these words likely trigger some very strong memories from your childhood. I remember vividly as a kid of seven or eight years old that all of the neighborhood kids would be playing in the street on early evenings on Tuesday or Wednesday. That was until someone’s mother would yell out the front door to the group of kids, Batman’s on in a few minutes! With this announcement the street would clear, at least for the next 30 minutes. While for many people the stars of the show were Adam West and Burt ward, not to mention the endless parade of celebrity guest villains, for even young motor heads the Batmobile was the star hands down. 24 motorfestmagazine.com FALL 2012

! ZOOM

The story of the 1966 Batmobile is an interesting journey from late fifties show car to being featured in a major motion picture and finally becoming a automotive legend through its own physical transformation. The Batmobile actually sprang from the creative mind of William “Bill” Schmidt who in the early 1950s was the manager of the Lincoln styling department of the Ford Motor Company. Bill wanted to create a very futuristic show car and so the process began in 1952 with original drawing beings submitted for what would become the Lincoln Futura. In 1953 the 3/8 scale model in clay was created followed by a full size plaster model in 1954. After gaining corporate approvals a full set of plans were produced along with a chassis and running gear and the famous Italian design house of Ghia was asked to build the body. Three months later in late 1954 the car was completed and shipped back to the USA where on January 5, 1955 the car was debuted to the media. Over the next year the Futura appeared in many auto shows around the US and after it completed its tour it went into

ZIP! storage until 1959 when the producers of the film “It Started With A Kiss” staring Debbie Reynolds and Glenn Ford brought the car back into the public eye. The car of course never made it into production, as is so often the case with show cars. As time went on the design and styling of car became out of step with current trends and the car ended up in the hands of the famous King of the Customs, George Barris. The car sat on George’s lot for some time in storage until the producers of the Batman television show, William Dozer, came calling asking about a car for their new series based on the comic book Batman. The issue was that

the production of the series was to start in three weeks as it debuted as a mid season replacement series. George realized that he would have to use and exiting car and he had the foresight to remember the Futura. Over the next three weeks George and his team transformed the now forgotten Future into a legend. As the series progressed, the Barris team constructed three additional copies for promotional purposes. As the series ended its run the number 1 car that was the Futura continued to tour in various auto shows with some modifications and in recent years found a home at the Peterson Museum in Los Angeles. The other three

copies over time began to find their way into private hands where they remain at present. As most of us aged, grew up and started to make a little money, most gear heads have a car, “the one that got away” or was not obtainable and the Batmobile certainly is well in that category. This secret demand started an underground industry of sorts, as when opportunities appeared enterprising business people were able to pull molds from one of the three copies and some kits started to appear in the marketplace. While all of this was going on a famed auto body artist named Marty Martino had asked Ford for permission to FALL 2012 motorfestmagazine.com

recreate the Futura given the original had been made into the Batmobile. Ford responded with photographs, drawings and actively supported the project. However this project never got beyond the finished body on a rolling chassis stage and it fell into disrepair. In 2004 this car appeared on eBay as the “Futura in the Woods”. Not being a copy of one of the four existing Batmobiles but rather a recreation of the original Futura brought certain advantages that could jump-start anyone wanting to build a Batmobile. Enter Mark Racop who when he saw the

add could not believe his eyes or his luck and after a few tense days of checking eBay frequently he had won the car for $2,125. As the car arrived Mark could see that his first job was preservation and then restoration before moving to the conversion from Futura to a Batmobile. As Mark moved through this process people began to hear about this chap in Logansport Indiana who was actually building a full size replica and maybe, just maybe, if he liked you, you might be able to pry one of these legends out of the shop. Others also started making replicas but Mark had a jump on them due to his having an ac-

curate model to work from, not just a set of molds, and the build quality was clearly the difference. As orders began to happen the Batmobile builders community had to be careful in their marketing, referring to their products as “modified Lincoln Futuras” and avoiding the “B” word at all costs to avoid unpleasant letters from the Lawyers from DC Comics. However like all successful business visibility can bring challenges and DC Comics went after all of the replica builders with cease and desist letters. As Mark continued to work on his orders and his lawyers worked the issues the powers at be saw an opportunity and in 2010 Fiberglass Freaks was given to date the only official DC Comics license to build official 1966 Batmobile replicas. So if you still have the kid in you, remembering tying one of your mother’s sheets around your neck as your cape, now you can complete the experience in all of its glory. The build time is about 12 to 14 months and yes there is a backlog as Mark limits himself to just eight cars per year. Oh and if you are interested in other 1960s type of transportation vehicles Mark is always looking at new ways to fill the need. I would advise you to stay tuned, same Bat Channel, same Bat Time!

MARS LIFE CURIOUS SEARCHING FOR LIFE ON 55,907,000 MI of OPEN ROAD By Frank Berte For millions of years man has looked up at the heavens and wondered what else is out there, are we alone? Standing on the edge of this endless expanse of spacetime mankind is only presently dipping it’s big toe in the ocean of our universe. Baby steps, a teacher once told me, baby steps is where we are right now... And where we are right now is the Mars Curiosity rover. A rolling, car sized, purpose built science lab, it’s primary goal is to explore the deep crevasses on the foot hills of a massive Marian mountain, Mount Sharp rising 3 miles (5 kilometers) from the center of

1. 2.

Mars’ huge Gale Crater. Within these dusty cracks Curiosity is looking for traces of water and within that water life. NASA’s latest contribution to the Martian landscape, landed at 10:32 p.m. Aug. 5, PDT, (1:32 on Aug. 6, EDT) near the foot of the great mountain. Landing there was no easy feat. After making to the near proximity of the red planet the rover just drops right in. Thick on the top and thin at the surface, the atmosphere posed an interesting problem to the scientists. The shell of curiosity needed to be hard and heat

resistant to get it through the upper levels, the weight of the large rover meant the whole module needed to take a very specific path. Everything needed to come off perfect with absolutely no human control toland on the surface safely. Light and therefore electronic communications take roughly 8 minutes to make the trip from the Earth to Mars. This meant that the Mohawk wearing crew at JPL had no way to control Curiosity once it was within striking distance of the surface and here’s exactly how that went down: 1. The outside of the protective shell fires off small weights to unstablize

the craft and allow it to be directed with 2. micro rockets to sort of fly the saucer through the thicker gasses and get the rover where it needed to go. 3. The largest parachute ever used in space deploys for a short time until 4. it releases and the sky crane takes over suspending the rover with a cable with which it lowers the rover down onto the surface as its wheels deploy. The second touchdown occurs the sky crane cable pops off and flys away a safe distance as to not kick up dust on the delicate Curiosity. All of this happens with no human hands, millions of minute calculations are made solely by the onboard computers...

Parking is a non-issue with unmanned flight. Special thanks to NASA, HQ in Washington, DC. They held a special viewing of the landing I attended it gave me a great window into our facinating space program. As financial cuts bite at their heals they are constantly finding new ways to make their program tighter, leaner and more productive...

MARS LIFECURIOUS Now safely landed on the Mars surface, Curiosity employs a sophisticated nuclear powered 6 wheel drive system to get around. Looking for those precious H2O molecules is time consuming business.

Curiosity carries 10 science instruments with a total mass 15 times as large as the science payloads on the Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity. Some of the tools are the first of their kind on Mars, such as a laser-firing instrument for checking rocks’ elemental composition from a distance. Later in the mission, the rover will use a drill and scoop at the end of its robotic arm to gather soil and powdered samples of rock interiors, then sieve and parcel out these samples into analytical laboratory instruments inside the rover.

To handle this science toolkit, Curiosity is twice as long and five times as heavy as Spirit or Opportunity. The Gale Crater landing site places the rover within driving distance to layers of the crater’s interior mountain. Observations from orbit have identified clay and sulfate minerals in the lower layers, indicating a wet history. Now for the 64 million dollar question, is there or better yet was there life on Mars? When we look into the vastness of space its obvious we are not alone. Mars is right in the perfect place to have once cradled life forms of its own. Proof though, would be an amazing discovery, proving without a shadow of a doubt in our wonderfully unique solar system life is possible beyond our own world.

THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT PART ONE By RAP

This series is for all of you fast drivers in reader-land. You know who you are. You speed not to get to the wedding on time, not to get to work on time, not even to get your pregnant girl friend to the hospital on time (though that’s the best excuse to the cop who stops you); you drive fast for the pleasure of becoming one with the machine versus the road, traffic merely an impediment to this purpose. Fast driving is intoxicating, exhilarating, addictive and, for some, necessary. Never try to explain speed to someone one who doesn’t speed (“You drive like a maniac”- no, maniacs are not as intense or concentrated); any attempt to rationalize to them would be as futile as having a functioning government before the end of the year. My purpose is to help you go as fast as you can as safely as you can. I am living proof that it can be done. 32 motorfestmagazine.com FALL 2012

You should be, at this point, wondering what I bring to the table besides having survived all this “fast driving”? I do have the addiction and my past includes: • Road Raced motorcycles at places like Virginia International Raceway and Nelson Ledges Ohio (not terribly successful but it certainly honed my skills) • Participated in Motorcycle Enduroes (just like automobile rallies but without roads and minus two wheels) • Downhill skied fast after mastering the sport (clocked at 76mph on the Snowmass speed course near Aspen) • Owned a succession of fast cars (among them an ’85 Corolla GTS, a Subaru WRX and a Subaru WRX/STi-too many letters but a ton of speed)

I believe the experience I have gained from the many miles of fast driving might be helpful to those who want to continue driving “con gusto” or those just beginning to become addicted. In this first article I will address the two essential pieces of equipment-the car and the driver. Experience is the best teacher. The longer you survive driving fast, the better you become at it. The tool you use to achieve this goal is up to you but if your preference is pick-ups, vans or SUV’s you start with a severe handicap; these are ill-handling, top-heavy vehicles (unless severely modified) whose utilitarian uses preclude any fast driving. They also block vision when someone driving fast in a car is trying to gain “situational awareness” by looking FALL 2012 motorfestmagazine.com

THE VIEWS PRESENTED HERE ARE those of the author. Please follow all posted signs & drive safely

THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT ahead, down the road. In an old gaming term they are “blocking terrain”. Starting with vehicles, the ranks of sporting street cars has swelled. The choices are too numerous to include here but as I have grown older (not necessarily wiser) the helpfulness of AWD has become apparent. The vehicle is dictated by what one can afford; if a Bugatti is in your price range then you can probably attend any number of driving schools given at race tracks (those guys generally advise not to speed on the road-what fun is that?). In reality, any car can be driven fast; some just do it in a less life-threatening fashion than others. I believe that most new speed merchants spend their money on the wrong things. Power is nice but generally comes at a price both to the pocketbook and reliability. 450 horsepower on a dyno is nice but if, as generally seems to happen, the car is constantly in need of tinkering and tuning, your driving time suffers. 200-250 reliable, factory generated horsepower is generally enough for the type of driving to which we are addicted. I always look at the 0-60mph time; 5-8 seconds is a good parameter for the type of street performance one needs. As has always been the case, the power-toweight ratio is the key to speed (just ask Lotus). More power, less weight, more speeda simple equation. I’m not suggesting you rip out the stereo, air-conditioning and the back seats but that does remove a considerable amount of weight; your call. Instead of more performance parts (like cop-attracting, noisy exhaust systems or fussy computer chips that your “buddy” can install; these most likely will detract from performance), put your money in the best tires you can buy for your wheel size. The truly fast driver could care less about the wear factor as long as the tires are “sticky” as hell. Expect to replace tires at the 15000 to 20000 mile mark. The han-

34 motorfestmagazine.com FALL 2012

dling enhancement of good rubber is priceless. Any number of places sell high-performance tires and most will include customer reviews. Less horsepower delivered to outstanding rubber trumps tons of horsepower delivered to mediocre all-season anomalies. Routine maintenance of the vehicle is anything but routine- it is essential. The easiest piece of the maintenance schedule is frequent oil and filter changes. 3000 miles is the magic number for doing this; change the oil, clean the engine. This improves the reliability and longevity of your car and your ability to drive fast as often as possible. The best light bulbs you can buy also enhance your driving fast longevity. Fast driving at night is thrilling but you’ve got to see where you’re going as clearly as possible. A neglected area of the

36

motorfestmagazine.com FALL 2012

speed equation are the windshield wipers; be sure they are fresh and can do the job at speeds of 100 plus (rain and snow just add an extra challenge to speeding; embrace bad weather or, to paraphrase Chevy Chase, “BE the raindrop!”). The most important piece of equipment in the vehicle is the driver. The attitude, attention to surroundings and seriousness one puts behind the wheel are critical. I have a few rules for speeding which I will share; these are only my observations and suggestions; if driving 90mph on the sidewalk is your preference then read no further. Maxim number one is to drive and only drive. Drive seriously, passionately and with concentration. I’ve been in several accidents and know from experience how little time it takes to go from “nice car” to “gee, what the hell happened?” It is fine to be listening to music as you crank through your back road

race course but adjusting or playing with your music as you do this is distracting and can kill you. This is assuming you still have a stereo/radio or, perhaps, you tossed it (see above). Cell-phoning, texting, 4Ging, make-upping, nose-picking anything distracting from the business of going as fast as possible removes you from the speeding fraternity. To misquote Descartes, “Cogito Ergo Speed”- I think, therefore I speed. Another personal rule is to never drive at a breath-taking pace with passengers in the car, again assuming you haven’t tossed all the other seats (see above). Passengers add weight, add to the distraction factor and also add to the toll on your conscience if you do manage to lose control. You can go fast with others in the car but not speed; not the type of speeding I’m writing about. Always use the turn signals for lanec h a n ge s ;

that lever to the left of the steering wheel is your only way of communicating to others on the road your intentions. I realize it’s a little hypocritical to suggest that signaling before zipping by somebody at a hundred is not necessary but it always makes me feel better when the only rule I am breaking is speeding (okay, I also pass on the right). Tail-gating or crowding the vehicle in front is also not recommended. Remember, it’s not the speed that going to hurt you; it’s the sudden stop in the back-end of the car in front of you that is painful. In addition, it will

THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT

almost certainly be your fault and the ensuing ticket cost and insurance increases aren’t worth it (once more, this is experience speaking). I generally find limited access highways not to be a great place for honing your driving skills; anyplace that an eighteen wheeler can do 90mph plus is not challenging enough to teach you anything. Besides, you will stand out and be instant trooper-

bait. Back-roads are the best. Find your favorite twisty roads and drive the hell out of them. The more you drive, the better you become, the faster you go. You might have noticed I’ve not said a word about “racing” anyone; you aren’t. You are racing against yourself, always trying to push the envelope. If you made a certain corner at 60mph, maybe

65mph should be your next goal. Being polished and smooth while doing excessive speeds is a reward that is immeasurable. I truly believe that life begins at a hundred. The next article will deal with “attitude”. It’s best not to have one but I’ll explain that in the future. Until then “Drive fast; take chances”. - RAP

ROCK & ROLL & THE OPEN ROAD WITH THE MEANSTREET RIDERS By MeanStreet Mary

Move over Rock fans there’s another band on the horizon called the MeanStreet Riders. With songs from the road in the same vein as the Eagles and with classic guitar licks and arrangements in the same bluesy vein as the Doors and Jackson Browne and the Stones the Riders offer something extra‌they actually live their songs straight from the seats of their motorcycles. The Riders stay away from the interstates and stick mostly to the less traveled roads and highways of yesteryear. Highways and towns that have stories to tell and rich Americana based history.

THE STREET

On a rare reprieve from the road the Riders record their motor magic, left to right Eric Lampley, Shannon Wallce, Dowlin Mayfield, Greg Torres, Kevin Lacour.

The group was actually formed from a group of songwriters that both ride motorcycles and write music about their love of the open road its culture and the freedom it brings. The group formed accidentally in the fall of 2008 when the guys were wanting to all simply take a break from day to day life and planned a trip to ride their motorcycles

through the southern United States on their way through the Ga/Tenn mountains to ride one of the most challenging and dangerous roads in the world Highway 129 “ Deals Gap” or as its also known “The Dragon”. The “ Dragon “ is a 11 mile stretch of road with 318 curves on the Tennesee /North Carolina border on US highway 129 and is considered a legendary motorcycle destination for riders around

the world. The weeks ride ended up being a life changing event for the Riders who’s members Mayfield and Wallace penned their first song about riding the “Dragon” and called it “129” Named after that infamous piece of road. The Mean Street Riders debut CD album released to retail September 13, 2011 and stretches across a wide gamete of Americana and

speaks to a culture that sees life, liberty and freedom being challenged more and more everyday in this ever growing rapidly changing world. From the title track “High on the Hog” which is about camaraderie, deep rooted friendship and not being caught up in the status quo to the ballad “Rolling On” which was based on the travels of Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper on their ride filming the movie “Easy Rider” and deals with also getting away from the day to day pressures and the pursuit to simply be free and ride with the wind in your hair like they did so long ago. The song “I’ve had a good ride” is based on their long awaited return to Sturgis Rally, the Badlands and riding through the South Dakota hill. The songs chorus also references real life teachings and not believing everything you hear or read with the line “don’t read all the writing on the wall” and invites you to take life “all in” and enjoy the good times but also take an inner look at the end of the day or your life and ask yourself have you “Had a Good Ride”? The rest of their debut LP is nestled deep in Americana rock, with country overtones and arrangements about family, friends, relationships, roads, trips, towns and how the American dream about freedom and how the pursuit of it seems to be continually challenged and shaped by the media, corporations and government bureaucracy. The group is managed by music industry veteran Bill Dern management out of LosAngeles California. Bill has managed many acts including John Waite from the Baby’s, Bobby Brown, New Edition, Commander Cody and many other acts. Bill met Dowlin Mayfield when he was working at MCA Records in 1986. The bands publicist MeanStreet Mary who has her own fans in excess of 25,000 is also the bands social media director. Mary met the founding members Dowlin Mayfield and Shannon Wallace in 2008 in Daytona Florida and immediately liked their message and agreed to sign on. Since the release of their title album “High on the Hog” and Mary’s involvement the band has amassed over 53,000 fans in 86 countries in 37 languages from their facebook fanpage and over 80,000 fans that have signed up through their website that follow their every move across a country that seems to be obsessed with change and challenging its Citizens freedom. Their debut album has been reviewed by many magazines from US Rider News, Ultimate Motorcycling, Cycle Matters, HD Open Road to Austin Music City , Biker Hotline and many others. World famous Harley Davidson artist David Uhl who’s art is collected from celebrities from Steven Tyler to U2s Bono to Jay Leno has used their music in his art presentations and even went as far as to design the bands logo. The Meanstreet Riders are the subject of a reality show currently being developed by executive producers, Steve Bedell, Burton Taylor and David Teitelbaum. Teitelbaum, who has produced shows for Discovery and A&E, sees tremendous potential in the band. “These guys are the real deal. They have credibility both in the motorcycle community as well in the

SLC SUPER LIGHT CARS

PURSUIT OF PURE SPEED

By Fran Hall

When Superlite Cars SLC was founded by Fran Hall in 2004 his dream was to designed, engineer, and reproduce the look, feel, quality & performance of a LeMans prototype car at a budget price.

As a young man Fran Hall grew up in the pits of the famous track around Isle of Man, England, and he would eventually immerse himself in all of that racing action, eventually trying his hand at Grand Prix-style motorcycle racing himself. The International Isle of Man TT is a motorcycle racing event held on the Isle of Man and was for many years the most prestigious motorcycle race in the world. The event was part of the FIM Motorcycle Grand Prix World Championship. The expertise Fran picked up by being part of the upper levels of racing technology served him well. 1After moving to Detroit, Fran got a job as a development technician for General Motors, working in engine development, including the Ecotec program. He then left GM for GM, or at least their GM Racing division, with an eye on their Indy car program and prototypes destined for Daytona. Thrilling stuff for a guy still in his 30s, but when you have a passion for racing as well as an appreciation for design, then what else are you going to do? When he was 36, Fran decided to pursue his love of both design and racing by creating Race Car Replicas (RCR). 44

motorfestmagazine.com FALL 2012

2012, just nine years later the Superlite routinely dominates cars with much more power, due to the car’s superior aerodynamics, better handling and braking, as well as the ability to get the power it does have down to the wheels. With the popular

GM LS7 engine, a Ricardo gearbox, Hoosier R6 tires, and an interior, SLC timed at 10.4 in the ¼ mile at 132 MPH. It’s not really a drag car, but an experienced driver, and better setup could no doubt improve on that time. 0-to-60 numbers are in the

3.2 second range, depending on conditions. Top speed is a function of setup and drivetrain, but with enough power, and the right gearing, the car could easily do well over 200 MPH. The Ricardo transaxle is geared quite tall, with a theoretical top speed of

SLC SUPER LIGHT CARS

about 257 MPH, assuming the engine had the power to pull it. The Superlite SLC was designed to be built in your garage, using basic hand tools. You don’t need to do any welding, or machining, or have fancy tools. Experienced builders have built complete cars with paint, a luxurious interior, and the popular LS-series of Chevrolet engines in less than 220 hours. If it’s your first build, or you are adding a lot of custom features, it will almost certainly take longer, but the SLC is probably the fastest car to build, and the easiest and least expensive to build to a high standard, than any other similar-looking car. Building a track car is even easier, as there is a minimal interior, and will often be the least expensive option. These can realistically be built in as little as 200 hours. The Superlite® vehicles have been designed to lead the market in simplifying build requirements & significantly reducing build time. For every buyer, this means a significant reduction in labor costs. The exceptional engineering and comprehensive kits, packed full of quality parts, mean less time spent researching and shopping, and 46 motorfestmagazine.com FALL 2012

less time assembling and building. All with the satisfaction of having a quality product at the end of the build. The Complete Kit is only $43,995, which includes pretty much everything you need to build the car except drive train, tires and battery. You can also buy the car in stages, to smooth out the cost over time, if that makes sense for you. Stages start at only $9995 to begin your own SLC! A completed street car will typically cost around $65,000 for a very nicely finished and painted car, using all new parts and your labor. Buying a used engine and drivetrain will reduce that somewhat. Really all-out builds can cross the $100K barrier, especially if you put a lot of attention on the engine and interior.

MEAL Crab Stuffed Mushrooms

Ingredients • Lenni’s Crab Mix • Mushrooms • Water • Lemon • White Wine • Butter • Paprika • Parsley

By Chef Alabamian Growing up in Alabama meant summers at the coast on a boat and a lot of fast trips from Geneva Alabama to Panama City Florida in my 1968 SS Chevelle. There was always plenty of seafood to eat – shrimp, fish, crab, oysters. Several months ago I meet Mark Foehrkolb at Lenni’s Crab Mix, Inc. office in Destin Florida. Mark the President of Lenni’s offer me their Maryland style crab mix which contains 67% all pasteurized blue crab meat. I like it that Lenni’s Crab mix is made ready to cook straight out of the container without adding any other ingredients and contains 100% handpicked blue crab meat. I now use Lenni’s Crab Mix as a stuffing for fish, shrimp, lobster, and more. Lenni’s crab mix can be prepared by deep frying, baking, sautéed, or grilled.

RECIPE:

Rinse off mushrooms, remove stems and cut a thin slice from bottom of the mushrooms so they sit flat. Toss mushrooms with a little water and lemon juice to keep their color. Remove from water mixture and blot dry with paper towels. Fill mushrooms with Lenni’s Crab Mix, about 1 Tblsp unless using jumbos; then of course a little more crab mix will be needed. Sprinkle with some lemon juice, a little white wine, melted butter, a little paprika and some fresh chopped parsley. Bake at 360 degrees for about 18 mins or until browned on top. Mushrooms to die for.

TRIFECTA The Trinity Effect By Andrew Troyer

The dictionary describes Trinity as “a group of three or a Triad. In yacht sales it’s specifically the Builder, the Broker and the Client. Without this “trinity” there is no deal. I recently had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of William S. Smith III (Billy), Vice President of Trinity Yachts located in Gulfport Mississippi. Trinity Yachts is the largest U.S. based builder of custom and semi-custom yachts from 24 meters to over 60 meters and the soon to be delivered M/Y New Horizon at 73.8 meters (242’). New Horizon is a quad-deck full displacement motor yacht built on a steel hull and aluminum superstructure. Designed by Trinity’ inhouse naval architects New Horizon is the exemplification of Trinity’s abilities to design, engineer and build worldclass super yachts. On a characteristically warm day at the Palm Beach International Boat show in March, Billy and I shared a cold bottle of water while sitting between yachts Cocktails and Carpe Diem II berthed at the super yacht docks. We discussed the state of the industry and what opportunities existed in the super yacht market and I was pleasantly surprised by Billy’s enthusiasm for what Trinity has accomplished, and can provide to the discriminating yachtsman. Coming off a banner year for the company, Trinity currently has six yachts in production from 36 meters to 74 meters not to mention the ten 90’ coastal patrol vessels being built for the Kuwaiti Navy. Mr. Smith believes that Trinity’s market advantage lies in their ability to design and build world-class yachts on the same level as any pedigreed European builder however they can deliver the yacht for 15 to 20% percent less through the cost savings of their non-unionized labor force. Billy also states that their yard’s fairing and painting abilities are superior or equal to any yard in the world and since they maintain close relationships with the best-ofthe-best in terms of design, noise abatement, engineering and electronics, Trinity can provide the same systems and amenities as their European competitors. So let me get this straight; you can build me a world-class yacht, using the industry’s most renowned naval architects, surveyors, attorneys and interior designers, deliver it with superior fit and finish, and you can do it in less time and for less money without compromise. “Well, I am sure our clients would love to save a few million on that build.” I told Billy. “Trinity can save them even more if they are willing to go to contract on yachts we currently have in build” Billy told me and continued “Two of our yachts, hull numbers 52 and 56 were designed, contracted and in the build process when the buyers defaulted. The interior is still open and 54 motorfestmagazine.com FALL 2012

we can redesign it to suit a new client and deliver a 50 to 52 meter aluminum yacht in 18 months. And probably for less than you can buy a used yacht of the same quality. Now that’s a deal”. I told Billy that several United Yacht Sales brokers maintain close personal relationships with individuals capable of owning yachts of this caliber and I would like to orchestrate a field trip of sorts for our brokers. Billy enthusiastically obliged and over the next few weeks we corresponded with details of the trip. In May of this year United brokers Chris Cooke, Juan Morillo, Christopher Cunningham, Neal Morris, Paul MacCormack and Andrew Troyer (Gulf Coast Director of Sales)accompanied United’s Founder and CEO Peter Schmidt to Gulfport Mississippi to meet with Billy Smith and his staff. A trip that will not soon be forgotten.

Peter Schmidt stated “I was very impressed how Trinity rolled out the red carpet for us and treated us so professionally.” He continued “We learned a lot about what makes Trinity a world-class yacht builder and why, we, United Yacht Sales should partner with them for the benefit of our clients”. Trinity walked United brokers through the design and engineering phases as-well-as reviewing the contract process and best practices to ensure United’s clients are properly cared for. Mr. Smith stated that “it is extremely important that both the broker and the buyer’s project manager are intricately involved in the process to

TRIFECTA ensure the communication lines are kept open and all parties are aware of any changes or modifications that routinely arise in a build such as this. We want the buyer to feel comfortable through the entire process and return for their next yacht. In fact, most of Trinity’s yachts are purchased by repeat buyers”. A true testament to Trinity’s intrinsic value. Although a true custom yacht builder, Trinity also has the advantage of building semi-custom or “series” yachts that incorporate a proven hull design. Semicustom yachts allow the buyer to still design the layout and interior within the parameters of a pre-designed and tested hull, thereby reducing the time to delivery and the expense of hull testing. With several time-tested designs already in service around the world, the semi-custom is a valuable option for the buyer who wants to rapidly enter the yacht into the charter market and maximize their ROI. A series yacht can save as-much-as a year on delivery. Case in point is aforementioned hulls numbered 52 and 56. Hull 52 is a 51.2 meter (168’) semi-displacement aluminum hulled tri-deck motoryacht. The former Euphoria accommodates an owner’s party of 10 in 5 staterooms with a crew of 10. To date hull 52 is approximately 40% complete with the power plant ready to be installed. Estimated time to completion after contract agreement and ordering of the interior is 18 months. You can view a brochure for Hull 52 at: unitedyacht. com/trinity/euphoria.pdf Hull number 56 is a 50.9 meter (167’) demi-displacement tri-deck motoryacht with interior design and exterior styling by Luiz de Basto of Miami. The yacht will accommodate a party of 10 in 5 suites with an optional 6th suite and operated by a crew of 10. Over the years, many United brokers have been involved in new builds in yachts of different calibers from 50 feet to 50 meters, however rarely is a broker invited to be involved to this level. At Trinity there is no ego or elitist entitlement; just the simple sharing of the unique experience that a rare few are privileged to enjoy in the building of a yacht such as this. And as we departed from our meeting with Trinity Billy Smith can be quoted as saying “Very rarely has a brokerage firm ever asked to come here and see how we build yachts. We really appreciate the interest United has in Trinity and we look forward to a longlasting relationship”. Billy, we look forward to a long-lasting relationship with you too, and as we speak two of our brokers are in talks with clients about a Trinity build.

Now available in Regular and caliente the f-35 A & B: AIF FORCE MARINES f-35 A f-35 B

Pictured here hovering above a floating fortress, the USS WASP, the Marine Corps’ B variant of the F-35 is performing a ship suitability test. This is in preparation for the Marines’ style of taking care of business. The F-35B team is gearing up for the ability to take off from sea and then descend lightly to austere grounds so the Marines can storm the beaches as they are so famed for doing. Remember, when you think “B,” think beach.

A BIT FASTER THAN

LIGHTNING By Frank Berte’

USAF F-35A Maintainers

The F-35 Lightning II combines agility, supersonic fighter speed, and sneaky stealth into the world’s most stylish flying computer. Couple that with advanced sensors and information fusion through onboard systems. Now you have the ability for a pilot to communicate and track the nasty threats lurking about through an information exchange that can go viral if it were likened to a social media exchange. With such situational awareness of the battle conditions and maneuverability in time and space, it is no wonder why the joint strike fighter touts survivability as just one feature of 5th generation technology. 33RD Fighter Wing: it’s full throttle forward for the men and women of the F-35 team at Eglin Air Force Base’s Joint Strike Fighter Integrated Training Center. The team has flown more than 200 training flights, of the Air Force A variant and Marine Corps B variant of the F-35. At first beginning with only two test pilots, the aviators of the Air Force 58th Fighter Squadron and Marine Corps Strike Fighter Training Squadron-501 have since trained up about a dozen instructor pilots. They will become the cadre to teach the U.S. and allied students from around the globe to fly the multi-role aircraft. Meanwhile, the Navy’s VFA-101 squadron situated at Eglin between the Air Force and Marine hangars, is gearing up to receive the F-35C jets later in 2013. The F-35C features enhanced landing gear and is designed to be catapulted from aircraft carriers. But for now, the 19 F-35’s in Eglin’s fleet are actively flying throughout the week at the Emerald Coast and beyond with the assistance of the highly capable maintainer team. As the fleet continues to grow, which now includes a United Kingdom F35B and next month a Dutch F-35A, the maintainers will be busy doing the flight-line hustle to keep the 40 thousand pound thrust class Pratt and Whitney engine of the F-35 rumbling below the pilot’s seat for another successful voyage.

FUNNYNOISES

Bulldog 31

Two Irish guys are fishing. The first guy reels in his line and sees that he’s snagged an old bottle. As he’s taking it off the hook, a genie pops out and promises to grant him one wish. “Turn the lake into beer,” he says. The genie goes “Poof!” and the lake turns into beer. He

says to the other guy, “So what do you think?” The other guy says, “You jerk. Now we’ve got to piss in the boat.” I bought a box of animal crackers and it said on it “Do not eat if seal is broken.” So I opened up the box, and sure enough…

Sent from Somewhere on the outskirts of Portland, Maine we found this most unusual banana in it’s original paint no less. Captured here by our senior stuntman correspondent who promises he’s only ever taken the car on gravel for lobster Sundays “once or twice”.
