A wise person once said that the three essentials of happiness are: something to do, someone to love, and something to look forward to. While some might say that this ‘pyramid of bliss’ is an overly simplistic road map to a lifetime of mirth, let us agree that this issue of Destin Magazine is a fine place to start: Something to do: It is said that “the purpose of life is a life of purpose.” How inspiring it is to watch people who know their abilities and strengths, what they are capable of doing, and then focus to accomplish their goals. I invite you to get to know a few of these local individuals who are featured on pages 31, 36, and 40-43. Someone to love: No matter the accomplishments or accolades that one achieves, the innate desire to love, and to be loved, is certainly crucial to one’s contentment, as attested by three Destin couples in “Longtime Love” beginning on page 62. Something to look forward to: There’s nothing quite like sweet anticipation! Whether it’s a well-deserved vacation, an outdoor concert, or fishing with friends, the season’s calendar in Destin is filled with exciting events to please every member of the family.

A SMILING SUCCESS

Operation Smile event raises $3,813

A

As part of its local “Celebration of Smiles” event on April 21, Destinbased photographers, Pure 7 Studios, helped change the lives, and smiles, of more than a dozen children. “We were so overwhelmed with the positive response of all that came out to be photographed, as well as those who privately donated and volunteered,” said Pure 7 Studios co-owner Erica Manthey. “Our goal was to raise enough to cover the expenses of ten complete cleft lip and palate surgeries, and we ended up raising enough for almost sixteen.” Shooting from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the team at Pure 7 Studios photographed 111 people and four bulldogs, raising a total of $3,813, benefitting Operation Smile. “Seeing people come out to support children in Lindsey Bray and Ryan Manthey of need for Pure 7 Studios proudly display the Operation amount raised for Operation Smile. Smile was a beautiful experience,” said Lindsey Bray, associate photographer and studio manager at Pure 7 Studios. Founded in 1982, Operation Smile is a worldwide children’s medical charity dedicated to helping children and young adults born with facial deformities. According to World Health Organization statistics, cleft lips/ palates occur in approximately one out of every 600 to 700 births. Complimentary food, wine, and dessert was graciously provided by Marlin Grill, Jim ’N Nicks, and Sweet for Sirten, as well as floral and linen rentals by Florals By The Sea and RSVP Weddings & Events. With a successful event behind them, the team at Pure 7 Studios is thankful for everyone who helped change the life of a child, one smile at a time. “I enjoyed using my talents to give back to those in need,” said Ryan Manthey, owner of Pure 7 Studios. ABOUT PURE 7 STUDIOS • Founded in Destin by Ryan Manthey in 2007, Pure 7 Studios specializes in wedding and portrait photography that has been described by their clients as nostalgic, romantic, emotional and unique. Annual Celebrity Luncheon Benefits Local Charities One of Destin’s most beloved events, the Annual Bonefish Celebrity Luncheon, was held in the spring for the fifth year in a row. The sold-out springtime event is a partnership between Newman-Dailey Resort Properties and Bonefish Grill in Destin to benefit the American Cancer Society and United Way. “It’s hard to believe that it was five years ago that I pitched the idea to my co-worker, Landra Sanders, and to my boss, Jeanne Dailey, owner of Newman-Dailey Resort Properties. I needed Jeanne to recruit the ‘celebs’ and Landra to help me put it all together,” says Lisa Morgan, Chair of the Event. “At the time, I was the Event Chair for the Destin Relay for Life, and I was determined to find a way to make $10,000 because that was the amount that we were always short of our goal each year. That first year, we made $8,400. The total amount raised at this year’s luncheon was $24,388, breaking last year’s record by more than $4,000!” “I am a huge New Orleans Saints fan, and in September, I had a chance meeting

with Tracy Porter, who was a Saints cornerback at the time. As I approached him for his autograph, he asked where I was from. When I told him Tracy Porter that I was from Destin, he immediately said, ‘I’ve never been there, but I want to go.’ I told him about the Bonefish Luncheon and asked if he would be interested in being involved and he said, ‘Yes, if we can work it out.’ In February, as I was on my way to a funeral for a friend who had lost his battle with cancer, I got the call from his agent saying that Tracy was very interested and wanted to make it happen!” At this year’s luncheon, Porter served as ‘Dessert Chef’ which allowed him to visit each table, have photos made with guests, and to talk about the special desserts available. “He gave it 100% and for that, I will always be a Tracy Porter fan (even though he is now with the Denver Broncos!) He and his

agent fell in love with Destin and its people and are already talking with me about exciting things for next year,” Morgan states. Since the event’s first year, $66,000 has been donated to the American Cancer Society, including more than $16,000 this year. The proceeds were shared with United Way with $8,100 presented to their Leaders Edge Program. Morgan expressed her excitement that the luncheon continues to sell out each year. “It’s not just about selling 400 tickets; it’s about the community involvement at the luncheon — from buying the special

desserts or chance drawing tickets to the live auction, which is where we see our increase each year!” Tina Anderson with Prudential Properties at Grand Boulevard worked double duty as a Celebrity Server and as auctioneer. Anderson was there to honor her fiancée who she lost to cancer this year. “Thanks to her, we raised $3,000 with only a couple items at each seating,” Morgan says. Morgan continued, “Each year we try to do something a little different to keep it exciting for those who attend. We choose a theme that our servers and volunteers dress for. All tickets are sold in advance and each year, we’ve sold out. A big thank you to Phil LoRusso, Managing Partner at Bonefish Grill. Without his commitment, none of this would be possible.” This year’s Celebrity Servers included: Brian Haugen - Sr. VP, InvestmentsRaymond James & Associates; Ron Green - President/Founder, Another Broken Egg

of America, Inc., Ken Wampler - Director of Business Development, Newman-Dailey Resort Properties; Linda Christiansen Owner/Publisher, Destin Magazine; Tina Anderson - Owner,Emerald Coast Barber; Jeanne Dailey - Owner/CEO, NewmanDailey Resort Properties; Ronda Davenport - VP, Campaign/ Marketing United Way; Sherry Currow - Broker Associate, Pelican Real Estate & Development; and, Rhonda Glassburn - VP of Finance, United Way. Special recognition goes to Sherry Currow & Lisa Morgan Sherry Currow who was the Top Celebrity

The total tip money collected by the celeb servers was $13,647. Morgan states, “It is my goal to find a cure for cancer. It’s too personal, having taken so many wonderful people from me. I have to keep fighting!”

The Tracy Porter Pick 6 Foundation The next day after the Luncheon, Newman-Dailey Resort Properties hosted an evening Meet & Greet with Tracy Porter which netted $9,000 for his foundation, The Tracy Porter Pick 6 Foundation, which is dedicated to fighting childhood obesity by encouraging young people to get active and stay healthy. Through community partnerships, the Pick 6 Foundation works to provide underprivileged youth with support systems, enrichment and mentoring activities to better themselves through academics and recreation. Move Over, Fraxel!

F

raxel is a very catchy name and even

though it is marketed for pigment removal, in my opinion, it is not the best option for this. As the name suggests, it is a fractional laser which means that it pokes small holes instead of affecting the entire skin. It is kind of like taking a needle and poking many small holes. Anyone can figure out that if there is uneven pigment, you do not need to poke many holes. Some people are forced to do five different painful sessions of fraxel because one session is never enough when you are trying to remove pigment. The net result is excessive cost and pain. When it comes to pigment there are many better, and less expensive, options. One of the basics of laser physics is that when it comes to removing pigment, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is the best option. This is because this type of wavelength is the correct energy to affect pigment. It is virtually painless and dark spots turn darker for a couple of days and

then they flake off! Another option is resurfacing, which means that an outer layer of skin is taken off to allow fresher-looking skin without the pigment abnormalities coming to the surface. Skin peels help with resurfacing and another laser called Pearl helps to get only a thin layer of skin off from the surface. While chemical peels can irritate skin, a laser peel like Pearl gets a very fine layer of skin off without irritating the skin. Besides pigment, IPL technology is also the right wavelength to eliminate redness on the face. Many people have small blood vessels on the skin that make the skin have uneven color and often even have visible blood vessels. IPL can be used to remove these blood vessels. There is another laser called Nd-Yag that also works on blood vessels and can be used to eliminate leg veins. IPL cannot penetrate deep enough for leg veins, but the

Nd-Yag penetrates deeper and can deliver more energy. When it comes to tightening skin, the idea of poking deep holes is a good one, but Fraxel actually uses too little energy to do this job. There are other lasers that are ablative that are better for this. The Pearl and Pearl Fusion lasers do a better job of using fractionated technology to tighten skin. In my clinic, we are passionate about optimizing health and we are one of the only clinics that use bio-identical hormones to help optimize body functioning. We have numerous patients who feel better and have lost weight by adjusting their hormones. We also provide numerous options for weight loss. There are different things like HCG, lipotropic injections, phentermine and Topamax that can be used for weight loss. But it is important to find the right thing for the right person. Being board certified in Internal Medicine, I am able to help people find the best options given their health conditions and medication lists. We also take insurance for medical care. Besides helping to optimize health, we can now help people optimize their looks. We have IPL, Nd-Yag and other lasers that help with numerous conditions such as excessive pigment or redness, leg veins, foot fungus. We are able to use different prescription-strength formulations to help people look better, too. If you need help with any of these conditions, feel free to call us at (850) 424-7320. b Voted Destin Magazine’s “Best in Destin - Women’s Wellness”, Dr. Bawa is a board certified Internal Medicine Physician and he enjoys helping people lose weight and be more healthy. This season’s Fashion is all about bright colors and bold prints. The top 2012 fashion trends for women include bright neons, vivid lip colors, statement-making necklaces, dip dye hair looks, sheer pieces and much more.

6. Crochet & Lace are sexy and romantic touches to your wardrobe — lace trim, lace embellishment, lace overlay and sparkly lace.

Designers this season are utilizing heavenly fabrics — light as a cloud — and putting out some wonderful heaveninspired designs. Soft and feminine dresses, and blouses, to make you feel like a bit of an angel.

7. Handbags – The biggest trend in handbags this season — short-strapped, oversized handbags or totally oversized clutches. Another big trend in handbags that was evident on this spring’s runways — lots of shiny hardware. Python messenger bags, schoolbag styles, embellished totes, metallic bling bags, fringed bags, and smaller-sized shoulder bags.

8. Dresses – Leather, A-line swing, oneshoulder, drop-waist, strapless, fringe detail, ornate embroideries, embellished necklines, sequined dresses and cocktail dresses —this season’s dresses and skirts will remain must haves. Fashion designers have given us all kind of fun fashions that will offer wonderful vivid prints, stripes, and geometric prints — not to mention some great new takes on animal prints. The main theme is somewhat tailored and classic, but with a touch of bold and edgy.

9. Jewelry – Stay classic with pearls —especially pearl/ leather combos, wrap bracelets, delicate stackable bracelets, bold cuffs, and colorful acrylic bangles and necklaces.

This season’s jewelry is all about making a big statement, be it with a necklace, a bangle, or an oh-so-big cocktail ring. From ethnic beading, to exotic stones, to avantgarde pieces, the one thing that’s constant: it must be big, bold, and colorful — with lots of emphasis on natural colors. Materials like stone and wood are so ‘in’ this season in jewelry. The natural feels are organic and botanicallooking beads is a big trend, especially in pendants.

10. Belts – Double wrapped belts, thicker belts, studded, and lots of color.

All these trends are found at Destin’s fashion leader, Today’s Boutique. Today’s Boutique has been dressing the women of the Emerald Coast in the latest styles since 1981. Today’s has developed their own look and appeal with clothes that are modern, edgy and perfect for the Emerald Coast’s cosmopolitan resort lifestyle as well as anywhere. Awarded Best Women’s clothing for over 10 years, Today’s Boutique caters to women of all ages. Located in the heart of Destin.

In addition to summer trends, the Silver Sands Shopping Insiders also shared the top five trends they’re obsessing over for the fall.

TOP 5 fall 2012 1. BURGUNDY (aka the new black). The color of fall 2012. 2. COZY + GLAM Cozy knits were all over the fall runways. Mix them with glam skirts and pants for a stylish, and comfy, combo. 3. MILITARY INSPIRED This season’s take on the trend is far from masculine thanks to glam fabrics and body conscious silhouettes. 4. LAYERED FLORAL PRINTS Floral prints are here to stay for another season. Rock this trend from head-to-toe or just pick one key piece to embrace the trend. 5. FUR TOUCHES This trend popped up on runways from New York to Paris, so it’s essential to add a fur-trimmed something to fall wardrobes (we love the faux-fur versions.)

BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING TIPS FROM SILVER SANDS The sun is about to set on summer vacation and the time has arrived for students to head back to school. Parents may view shopping for new clothes with their children as a stressful and overwhelming activity but it doesn’t have to be. Here are 10 tips from the shopping insiders at Silver Sands Factory Stores to ensure you have an efficient and fun back to school shopping experience. 1. Go through current clothes Before you head to the stores and purchase all new clothes, go through your child’s wardrobe and have them try on everything to make sure it still fits. It might be time consuming but it will prevent you from buying items your child already has enough of and you’ll know exactly what they need. Also, get rid of anything your child no longer likes or wears. Sell the clothes at a yard sale or donate to charity.

2. Make a list The most effective strategy for tackling back to school shopping is to make a list of all the items you need. You can create a list on your cell phone or go for the classic approach with pen and paper. The New York Times named Evernote one of the “Top 10 Must-Have Apps” and it’s perfect for staying organized and creating to-do lists on the go. Divide it into specific sections, such as tops, pants and shoes and be sure to cross off items after you buy them. Stick to your list and don’t get distracted by unnecessary items. Being organized and prepared ahead of time will make the experience go a lot faster. 3. Know what stores you need to shop at Before you set off, figure out what specific stores carry the items you need. Knowing exactly what store to buy dresses or jeans at, for example, will save you time because you won’t be wandering around in random stores. This is especially useful for parents whose children are required to wear a uniform to school. Uniform essentials such as button downs, khakis and belts can be purchased at a variety of stores including Brooks Brothers Factory Store, Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger and Polo Ralph Lauren Factory Store. 4. Set up a budget Just like making a list, calculating a budget is an organizational step that is crucial for a smooth shopping experience. Settle on an amount that you can spend on back to school shopping and stick to it. Keep a running account of how much you’ve spent so you’ll know how much you have left. Like the list, you can use your cell phone or paper. This will keep you from overspending and being shocked when you look at your receipts. 5. Take advantage of the sales tax holiday This year’s sales tax holiday starts on Friday, August 3 at 12:01 a.m. and ends on Sunday, August 5 at 11:59 p.m. During this event, no Florida sales tax will be collected on sales of clothing, footwear, and certain accessories selling for $75 or less per item, or on certain school supplies selling for $15 or less per item. For more detailed information and a list of all tax-exempt items visit the Florida Department of Revenue’s website at dor.myflorida.com.

6. Search for sales A great place to search for sales is the Sunday edition of your local newspaper. Many stores advertise their back to school sales and offer additional coupons, for example Silver Sands includes 20% off coupons to a variety of stores during the tax free weekend. Websites for shopping centers also feature sales pages and VIP Clubs that list the current savings and exclusive online coupons. 7. Comfort is key Kids will be kids and that means they’ll play at recess, get messy with arts and crafts and chow down at lunch. Don’t buy really expensive clothing made of easily stained or ruined material for school. You want your child to feel comfortable in their clothing while doing a number of activities. Have your child try on all items of clothing and walk around to make sure it feels and looks good. 8. Stock up on staples and buy basics It’s important to have a strong foundation when building a wardrobe. Solid colored tee shirts and long sleeve tees can match with any type or colored bottoms. Jeans are a must because they go with absolutely everything. Plain shorts also go well with many different tops and can be worn nearly year round in the warm Florida weather. Unadorned items can be easily mixed and matched to quickly create an assortment of outfits. Make sure your child has at least one pair of sneakers and one pair of sandals for their basic shoes. Basics are easy to find at an array of stores including Carter’s, The Children’s Place Outlet, Gap Outlet, Gymboree Outlet and OshKosh B’Gosh. 9. Add some trends After you’ve acquired your child’s basic clothing, you can start to add in more fashionable pieces and accessories. Classic trends for girls include patterns such as stripes, polka dots and flowers. Sports themed style is always a hit with young boys. Hartstrings, Nike Factory Store and Under Armour all feature sporty apparel for boys. Bright colors are popular with both genders because they’re fun and youthful. Some upcoming fall trends include ruffles and detachable collars for girls and camouflage print for boys. These trends and more can be found at crewcuts, Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH and Janie and Jack Outlet. 10. Show off style Just because children are young doesn’t mean they don’t have their own personal style. Let your child express themselves and show off their uniqueness by allowing them to help pick out their own clothes. Whether your child’s style is more sporty or preppy or they lean more towards quirky or classic looks, let them wear what makes them happy and what they feel the best in. If you follow these tips, your shopping experience will be a breeze and your children will be excited to head back to school and show off their stylish new looks. b

Elaine & Bob Manthey

YEARS MARRIED: 51 years HOW WE MET: Elaine: We met in 8th grade when I moved to Ramona and we went through high school together, and started dating the summer of my Junior year. FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Elaine: He was funny, but his breath smelled like garlic because his family made homemade sausage with lots of garlic in it! Bob: I thought, ‘She is the one for me!’ QUALITIES THAT ATTRACTED YOU TO EACH OTHER: Elaine: He was always lots of fun and good-looking! Bob: She was pretty and intelligent. FAVORITE MEMORIES: We have had some awesome vacations to Europe, Italy, Hawaii and Alaska, but our favorite times were with the family when we went to the lake camping or horseback riding in the Badlands or Yellowstone or to Disney World. SPECIAL TRADITIONS: Making Christmas ornaments and cookies with the kids and having everyone over to our house for Christmas. ADVICE FOR A GOOD MARRIAGE: Elaine: Base your marriage not just on love, but on commitment. Let go of yesterday; you can’t change it. Make the most of today. Bob: Make sure you communicate. FUNNY STORIES THROUGH THE YEARS: Elaine: I woke Bob up one night when I saw an armadillo tearing up our lawn. Of course, he was in his BVDs and I was in my pajamas. We cornered the armadillo and as Bob was bending over, just about to stick the armadillo with a pitchfork, the animal jumped on Bob’s back and ran away. Bob let out a yell and wouldn’t go after him any more! Bob: Once, Elaine got really mad at me because I told her she wasn’t lining up the fence posts the way I wanted her to. She threw her shoe at me. I ducked and she missed. That didn’t help at all, but it sure was funny. FAVORITE SONG: “Must Be Doin’ Somethin’ Right” by Billy Currington PHILOSOPHY FOR A GOOD MARRIAGE: Keep Christ in the center of your marriage. QUOTE: “What Would Jesus Do?”

Kim & JimDettle

YEARS TOGETHER: We met in Vail, Colorado 33 years ago and moved back to Destin together. We were married 31 years ago on January 23, 1981 in Hawaii. HOW WE MET: Jim: I walked into Vail Jewelers where Kim was the manager. I was also in the jewelry business. As the story goes, I ‘checked out Kim’s merchandise’ and the rest is history. VailFest was our first date on top of Vail Mountain at Eagle’s Nest. We were outdoors, under the stars, and we kissed. It was a magical evening. FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Kim: Jim had stunning blue eyes and was very handsome and well dressed. He seemed very confident and he was persistent. Jim: Kim was so beautiful. I knew that I had to get to know her as I couldn’t get her off my mind. I was smitten! QUALITIES THAT ATTRACTED YOU TO EACH OTHER: Kim: Jim was very upbeat and positive, with a great sense of humor. He was also industrious, creative, and was good with business. Jim: Kim was so attractive and had such a bright, shiny personality. She was, and is, the kindest person I have ever known. She

knocked me out and it was love at first sight. FAVORITE MEMORIES: Kim remembers her Hawaiian honeymoon near the Volcano: “One morning, Jim went to the general store and bought all of their Calla Lilies and filled the entire room with buckets of them before I woke up!” Jim remembers their five-year anniversary: “We took a sleigh ride up Vail Mountain to a restaurant with a romantic dinner and, of course, a five-year ring encrusted with diamonds. Perfect!” ADVICE FOR A GOOD MARRIAGE: Kim: Always look for the great qualities in each other and give compliments; we take turns being the boss as we have worked in our business together since before our marriage. Jim: Marry a woman that has more patience, understanding and compassion than you do. Never go to bed mad. (Of course, making up is the best part!) Love her more than your life. FUNNY STORIES THROUGH THE YEARS: We have a million of them. When Kim turned 30, Jim threw a huge surprise party in a ballroom in Sandestin. The theme was “It’s Been a Good Life, Kim” with all 100 guests dressed in black and wearing black-and-white “30” armbands. There were tons of dead roses and tombstones. Wicked fun! FAVORITE SONG: “It’s A Wonderful World” — Louis Armstrong and the “Izzy” Hawaiian version. PHILOSOPHY FOR A GOOD MARRIAGE: Our philosophy is to give more than you expect to receive and never take each other for granted. FAVORITE QUOTE: God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; Courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” ~ Reinhold Niebuhr

Joy & Ron Adams

YEARS TOGETHER: Married 22 years HOW WE MET: Ron: We met through a mutual friend while I was performing my Elvis tribute show in Montgomery, Alabama. FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Joy: When I first saw Ron, I thought that he was the most handsome man I had ever seen. But, when I actually met him, his looks were nothing compared to his sweet, kind disposition. Ron: When I met Joy, I thought, ‘Wow! This 35-year-old chick is gorgeous, but I am sure, after enough conversation with her, I will find that I like her less and less, like all the others.’ I was wrong. QUALITIES THAT ATTRACTED YOU TO EACH OTHER: The thing that was different (about our relationship) was the more we got to know each other, the more we liked (and then loved) about each other. We found that we didn’t fight, which was unusual, but refreshing. In 22 years of marriage, in any of our disagreements, neither of us has ever raised our voice. FAVORITE MEMORIES: Ron: We have many memories that are wonderful. One of the best was when I, at 26 years old, showed up at her house on May 23, 1990, after a long-distance call with her the night before, during which I asked, ‘Will you marry me?’ The next day, when I walked up to her door, she said, “You must have woken up at 5:00 a.m. to get down here so early. What are you doing today?” I said, ‘Marrying you!’ The look on her face was priceless, as she must have thought that I might have been ‘just talking’ during the conversation the previous evening. Yes, we went to the courthouse and were married by noon. TRADITIONS, ROUTINES & TIME TOGETHER: We have a lot of holiday traditions centered around family and friends, but our daily routine is as special to us. Each morning we wake up, she first. Then, I wake to a cup of coffee that she has placed beside our bed. While I drink it, she makes breakfast as I watch the news headlines. We then go upstairs to our office until noon, then go to lunch together, after which she rides her horse while I go to the gym. Most every evening, we go out to dinner together. We spend 90% of our time right beside each other. We live our life with each other, although we feel that it still is not enough time together. ADVICE FOR A GOOD MARRIAGE: Joy: The first thing I suggest is to pick the right guy, then love him with all your heart. Never even think of life without him. Understand that people make mistakes and bad decisions, but if you truly love them and they truly love you, then you will work through the mistakes. Always do the right thing, and love him even when he does the wrong things. And, if this doesn’t eventually make him do all the right things, then you did not do the first thing I suggested, which is to pick the right guy! Ron: My advice for a good marriage is ‘to marry Joy’. Seriously, I take very little credit for our happy marriage. I found the most precious, honest, sweet, kind, and loving person that I have ever met… and she wanted me. I am simply thankful. FUNNY STORIES THROUGH THE YEARS: Ron: I had a new Porsche and, one day, Joy came into the house and said, “Go ahead and scream and yell at me, but I just backed into your new car and destroyed the back end of it!” I smiled and said, “That’s OK. You have more money than I do, so fix it, and I will drive your car until it is repaired.” She asked, “Can I ride with you until then?” I replied, “Load up!” We laughed because it gave us a reason to ride around with each other for almost a week. A year or so later, when I had been really busy, she said, “Do I have to wreck your car to get some time with you?” Again, we laughed, and then rode around together for a while as if we had only one car. FAVORITE SONG: Ron: I am an entertainer and have been performing professionally for 27 years. I sing a lot of songs for a lot of people, but there is one song that I sing only to Joy —”The Wonder of You”. PHILOSOPHY FOR A GOOD MARRIAGE: Ron: Years ago, the late Patrick Swayze was in Scottsdale, Arizona where we were showing horses. Because he and his wife, Lisa Neimi, had been married for nearly 30 years, I asked, “Patrick, with you being wealthy, famous, and living in Hollywood, how do you stay married?” He said, “It’s easy, Ron. When you are married to someone you love more than you love yourself, you simply don’t divorce.” I interpreted that to mean that you never quit and you always work on the little things. There is no one on this earth in which I fully trust other than my wife, Joy. She has proven her love for me and she has always stood beside me. She has been my rock. There is nothing more important to me than to make sure she is safe, comfortable, secure, and happy. I do love her more than I do myself, and would gladly step in front of a bullet that had her name on it. She is special and that makes me feel special. I am thankful to the good Lord for allowing me to spend my life with her. b

Fishing Destin

T

he Destin Fishing Rodeo began in May of 1948 to bring people to Destin. It worked! Destin shortly became known as a summer tourist destination and “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village”. The Rodeo founders, people such as Howard Marler, Jewel Melvin and Willie Marler, decided that moving the Rodeo to October would lengthen the tourist season another month. Today the 64-year-old Rodeo is held October 1- 31. AWARDS: Destin Fishing Rodeo awards are sponsored in good part by area businesses. Other awards are paid for by the Rodeo through entry fees and merchandise sales. We do not know if the name “Luckiest Fishing Village” came from the size and amount of fish that can be caught off Destin’s shores, or the prizes that were won in those first Rodeos. The winning King Mackerel in the first Rodeo won the angler a new kitchen: a refrigerator, stove, and even the kitchen sink! In 1950, the Rodeo was still awarding kitchen appliances, but the top prize that year was a lot in Destin, complete with survey, title, and insurance! The lot was valued at $500! Wonder what that prize would be worth today?! Of course, not all the prizes could be that grand, for example, the largest Triggerfish in 1951 brought $25.00, a windshield wiper, and 12 cans of beer to the lucky angler. The Rodeo no longer awards kitchen appliances or beer to the winners. As far as the lot in Destin goes… we will be happy to give one away if someone wants to donate it! Today the awards are mostly fine rods

64th Annual

Rodeo

October 1-31, 2012 and reels, fishing trips, weekend stays and everyone’s favorite, cash. RULES: The Rodeo has a Rules Committee that governs all activities related to angler and fish eligibility. In the early days of the Rodeo, there were 20 rules listed on one page. They were general rules covering eligibility of contestants and the types of fish that could be entered. 15 species could be entered in the Rodeo. Today, rules take up five pages in the annually published Rodeo book. There are 75 separate rules covering 33 species in 29 divisions. As future state and federal fishing regulations change, so will the Rodeo rules. PARTICIPATION: Private boats and Charter boats must register to enter the Rodeo at least 24 hours prior to weighing a fish. There is no entry fee for anglers on registered vessels. Shore fishermen can participate by just bringing their catch to the scale. Hundreds of people watch the weigh-ins every day. When a shark or a big grouper or tuna is on the scale, the crowd reaches “standing-room-only” status. The Rodeo has truly become a “spectator sport”. VOLUNTEERS: The Rodeo has always depended on volunteers to make it successful. Volunteer help is the only way the Rodeo has succeeded for 60+ years, and the only way it will continue to succeed. A volunteer Board of Directors that consists mainly of local business people with an interest in fishing runs the Rodeo.

This Board governs all committees and the dayto-day activities of the Rodeo. Volunteers serve as Rodeo judges at the weigh-ins every day in October. Judging requires two people per shift for 31 days (2 shifts per day). The Rodeo also has a merchandise booth that is manned by three volunteers October 1 – 31. Between the two, the Rodeo needs 217 folks to donate 2-5 hours in October. We have over 2,000 available hours of volunteer service. Call the Rodeo office to volunteer, no experience required. RECORD KEEPING: Rodeo entries were kept by hand and calculated by hand until 1991. All entries were logged in a book and verified by the Boat captain, the Rodeo judge, and the Rodeo director. At the end of each day, all of the entries were calculated by division and a daily winner was determined. The Rodeo director stayed after the weigh station closed every evening to calculate the winners, type a daily report, and get it to the newspaper for the next day’s edition. Today, the Rodeo is as high-tech as any business. All catches are entered into a computer program online and are automatically calculated. Anyone with internet access can see who is leading in any category in real-time 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Reports are automatically generated and emailed to the press for publication. As technology advances, the Rodeo will as well. ECONOMIC IMPACT: The Destin Fishing Rodeo has a significant economic impact on Destin. In 2006 an estimated 36,518 anglers from 27 states and 5 countries (13,421 local) participated in the Rodeo. Using TDC calculations of $225.00 per person x 23,097 people (based on anglers alone, not including non-fishing companions); there was $5,196,825.00 revenue into community directly related to the Destin Fishing Rodeo. Anglers provide an estimated $3,831,600 income to the charter boat industry in October. Fuel sales between the two largest fuel providers on the harbor in October is $486,980 in October compared to $119,807 in November – a 75% decrease. The Gross Lodging Income in Destin in October 2006 was $6,216,018 compared to November at $3,723,790, a 42% decrease from October to November. Visit www.destinfishingrodeo.org b
