beachbag Okaloosa Schools Celebrate Change for Children Okaloosa County schools recently celebrated the success of their Change for Children campaign with a pizza party at the Niceville Community Center. The schools raise money for Children in Crisis (CIC) throughout the year by collecting change in classrooms, hosting bake sales and having talent shows. The Florida Fidelis Tau Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa (ADK) hosted the end-of-year event to celebrate the success and generosity of these students. ADK President Mary Jane Ross said, “It was wonderful to see more than 180 children at the pizza celebration. We were thrilled to have 27 schools participate in this year’s campaign and that these students know that their change will make a change in children’s lives.” At the celebration, Florosa Elementary School’s choir performed three songs for the group. Choctawhatchee High School’s Ashley Meyers sang “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus. Dr. Judy Manning, CIC Operations Director, spoke to the group about the hope they give to the children of CIC.

Ken Hair, President - Children in Crisis, presents the trophy to the winning high school, Choctawhatchee High School. Also at the event was Dr. Alexis Tibbetts, Okaloosa County Superintendent of Schools, who encouraged the generosity of the schoolchildren and congratulated the impact they have on their community at such a young age. Tibbetts said, “Okaloosa County School students are proud to support Children in Crisis. Every child in our school district is aware of the neglect and abuse that some children suffer. It is the goal of the Change for Children campaign to make life better for each and every child who lives at the Children’s Neighborhood. We join the dedicated employees, donors and volunteers of Children in Crisis in caring for foster children. This campaign is just another example of the altruism that is demonstrated in our community and schools by our committed parents and

students. Thank you, Children in Crisis Neighborhood, for making our community a better place to live, work, grow and learn.” The community support for this campaign is great. In addition to ADK, Helen Back Café, Bay Area Awards, Wachovia, and Flowers & Gifts by Vivian all contributed significantly. Each year, the Change for Children campaign is one of the most successful fundraisers for Children in Crisis. At the celebration, the most profitable schools in each of four categories were announced. Choctawhatchee won the high school division. Destin Middle School raised the most of any junior high. Edge earned first place among elementary schools. Lewis School won the K-12 division. beachbag The Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa Celebrates Grand Opening of New Barefoot’s Beachside Bar & Grill Summer is in full swing at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa – Northwest Florida’s largest full-service beachfront resort hotel – following a $6.5 million hotel-wide renovation project. In April, the iconic Destin hotel officially unveiled its new beachside restaurant, Barefoot’s Beachside Bar & Grill, in front of approximately 200 local community partners and media. The opening of the new Barefoot’s – which has been a Hilton Sandestin Beach guest favorite since it was first opened in 1985 – is particularly special, following the deck fire that completely destroyed it in October 2010. Within six months, the Hilton Sandestin Beach was able to not only bring it back just in time for spring, but do so better than ever, with a stunning new view of the sugar-white sand and emerald-green water of the Gulf. “The hotel-wide investment is not only a testament to our staff’s unwavering commitment to quality but also to our dedication to continuing to enhance guests’ experience,” said Gary Brielmayer, General Manager. “Their feedback, needs and wants were taken into consideration during the rebuild, every step of the way.” Take in a Stunning New View The new Barefoot’s beachside restaurant boasts obstructed views of the Gulf from beachside and poolside seating areas with umbrellas, as well as a modernistic bar featuring flat-screen TVs and gas heating for use in the cooler winter months. The new restaurant’s menu remains true to the items that made it a Hilton Sandestin Beach guest favorite for so many years, featuring mouth-watering

Sinfonia’s 5th: A Symphony of Music and the Arts

SINFONIA PHOTOS BY: Michael Cage, Lori Eckert, Kay Phelan, Teri Voyles

Sinfonia Gulf Coast closed its fifth anniversary season with a bang…literally! The fireworks finale of the Memorial Day pops at Alys Beach brought closure to what was a stellar year of not only incredible music, but renowned guest artists, dancers and the auction of violins from the six-month long run of ArtStrings: A Painted Violin Exhibit. Highlights of the concert season included the traditional Orchestral Holiday featuring the Canterbury Brass, a toe-tappin’ Irish jig of a performance in March with instrumental ensemble Mithril and the season gala in February with the return of violinist Nick Kendall and composer Chris Brubeck, son of jazz legend Dave Brubeck. The Southeast U.S. premiere of Chris’ concerto for violin, Spontaneous Combustion, which was written for Mr. Kendall, brought the sold-out crowd to three thunderous standing ovations. The first half of the performance was enhanced by members of the Northwest Florida Ballet dancing live to the orchestra

in Prokofiev’s beloved ballet Romeo & Juliet. Beethoven and Schubert made their own musical appearances in January and the dazzling Mary Wilson of the Supremes gave an exquisite cabaret-style performance at Seagar’s Prime Steaks & Seafood in October. Sinfonia’s innovative membership/donor component, bravo!, had its most successful season to date with events including a fashion show, floral show with the award-winning Kirby Holt, several exciting wine dinners, the fifth year of Charity Gift Wrap at Silver Sands Factory Stores, the first annual bravo! beat 5K run/walk and a six-month exhibit of painted violins at Grand Boulevard Town Center. ArtStrings: A Painted Violin Exhibit included painted violins from local, regional, national and international artists and was displayed in a storefront in Grand Boulevard Town Center from November through April. More than 5,000 32

people viewed the violins before they were auctioned to raise money for the James A. Fuller Memorial Fund for Music Education. “This was a first class endeavor which raised awareness of Sinfonia’s education programs within the schools of Okaloosa and Walton Counties. To date, Sinfonia’s Guest Artists in the Schools and Classical Connections programs have benefited more than 25,000 school children,” stated Sinfonia Music Director Demetrius Fuller. As our region’s only professional symphony orchestra, Sinfonia continues its commitment to entertaining, educating and inspiring the community through imaginative and innovative musical programming.

beachbag Destin Seafood Festival returns to its roots on the Destin Harbor

After years of organizing Destin’s long running Seafood Festival, the Destin Chamber of Commerce announced this past fall that it was time for them to let go of the Seafood Festival. An open call was put out to community stakeholders in the Destin Harbor area. The Destin Charter Boat Association stepped to the plate. All businesses along the Destin Harbor have pledged support and have engaged in planning meetings to discuss venues, timing and details for the 33rd annual Destin Seafood Festival. The event draws over 30,000+ visitors each year. The Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association and the Emerald Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau have also stepped up in a major way to support the festival which has become a highly anticipated tradition for both locals and visitors. Bruce Craul, COO of Emerald Grande at HarborWalk Village, supported efforts to bring the Destin Seafood Festival back to its original dates of the first weekend in October, and return to the original Destin Harbor location, thereby working in harmony with the kick-off of the Destin Fishing Rodeo. In order to achieve this, Craul’s marketing team offered to move their successful HarborFest event, scheduled for that the same date in October 2011 to the spring of 2012 to accommodate the change back to the original dates and location. “We are pleased that the historic Destin Seafood Festival will be back to its original roots on the Destin Harbor,” commented Craul. “A strong relationship will be forged in the upcoming years with the Destin Fishing Rodeo, Destin Charter Boat Association and our Harbor businesses.” Mike Eller, President of the Destin Charter Boat Association explained, “We will place a strong emphasis on maintaining the integrity, traditions and the history of the Seafood Festival, starting with the moving the date back to the first weekend in September to ensure that the Festival is the official kick-off of the Destin Fishing Rodeo.” The business community and the City of Destin have worked together and moved forward to achieve a successful solution to breathe new life into the Destin Seafood Festival. The month of October is the annual Destin Fishing rodeo draws anglers to Destin each year since 1948. The new Destin Seafood Festival 2011 dates will be September 30 - October 2, with a picturesque new linear venue running along the historic Destin Harbor from Dewey Destin’s through HarborWalk Village. Free admission to the Festival. Melissa Steffan is the Festival’s Event Coordinator for the Destin Charter Boat Association. According to a survey published in 2005, 20% of American adults develop anxiety at some time in their life and about half of all Americans are diagnosed with a mood disorder at some time in their lives. Medications are very helpful for severe cases but there are a lot of natural alternatives that are milder and can be used in some situations. Even with medications such as Prozac, Zoloft and the like, the recommendations are to try weaning them off after about six months. At this point, natural alternatives can make it easier to taper and stop these medications. Unfortunately, most physicians are not aware of these alternatives and I also had to go to special conferences to learn the details. Below is a brief description of the some of the natural supplements I have found to be useful in my practice. Be sure to seek advice from a physician in addition to using this information. One of the important things to realize is that hormone levels affect mood in a profound manner. Many women start to have hormonal fluctuations starting even in their 30s and can start to feel bad as a result. Adjusting hormone levels can even help with PMS, heavy menstrual cycles and irritability. Menopause causes huge hormonal fluctuations that can adversely affect mood. Adjusting hormones using

bio-identical hormones can help restore a favorable outlook on life. However, not all physicians understand how to use bioidentical hormones and it is important to find a doctor who can use such natural hormones. Nutrition and vitamin status has an important role to play in mood disorders. Neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine are made from amino acids and supplementing the right amino acids makes it easier for the body to produce the right neurotransmitters to improve mood. Serotonin is made from 5HTP and this is available as a supplement. Taking this supplement helps greatly with mood. Similarly, dopamine is made from tyrosine and taking tyrosine makes a big difference with anxiety and depression. An extract from a flower called St. John’s Wort helps to increase serotonin in ways very similar to medications but is milder. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter in the brain that is made from a natural supplement called choline. Gettitng more choline as a supplement has been shown to help with mood and even energy levels. Besides supplements, there are ways to focus the mind that help improve mood. Prayer and faith have an important role and a strong belief system can be indispensable

in a time of crisis. Focusing on positive thoughts helps to produce the right neurotransmitters in the brain allowing for a better outlook on life. For example, when trying to decide whether to go exercise, it is better to think of how exercise will make one feel so much better and that positive thought will motivate one to undertake exercise. On the other hand, focusing on exercise as a chore will only lead to procrastination and bad feelings. When doing chores, break up all tasks into smaller tasks and the accomplishment of finishing a task, even if it is small, produces satisfaction. This positive stimulus helps motivates us towards finishing bigger tasks. When cleaning the house, clean one small area at a time and the satisfaction of finishing that small task will make it easier to do other tasks. These days, there are machines that provide “bio-feedback” in that they sense the electrical signals of the body and give out subtle electrical signals that help our body feel better. Bio-feedback is a newer, milder way to improve mood without medications. This might seem like a lot, so be sure to seek advice from a physician who understands how to use supplements and natural alternatives to help with mood. b

TRAVEL From the Emerald Coast to the Entertainment Capital of the World

V by Linda Christiansen

Visions conjured by most people at the mere mention of Las Vegas are quite different than the city that I have come to know and love. While living in Destin is certainly a dream come true, a trip to this popular city provides the occasional change of pace for me. Whether enjoying the sun and sand of the Emerald Coast, or the shows and shopping in the ‘Entertainment Capital of the World’, my philosophy is ‘wherever you go, there you are.’ Last year, after I returned from my third trip to Vegas in the same number of years, and knowing that my visits to what some call Sin City did not include anything similar to scenes from The Hangover, my mother hinted, “I would love to go there with you someday, but you’re always so busy.” Literally, within hours of relaying to her my first available week, she had booked the lodging for our first grown-up vacation together — time together that we will remember forever! Our noontime arrival in Las Vegas allowed ample opportunity to show her around The Strip before our week-long fully packed itinerary began. Our first destination was Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at Luxor Hotel & Casino, where the epic story of the “ship of dreams” is revived. Viewed by more than 20 million people worldwide, the Exhibition is among the highest attended in history. As we moved through the galleries, we experienced the important historical event, disaster and passenger stories in chronological order: from the construction yards, to her maiden voyage, the fated sinking, to modern day recovery efforts. The exhibit is designed to make one feel as if you are a passenger with the excitement of that April day. We stepped into the authentically re-created first and third class cabins, strolled through the Promenade Deck and stopped

for a breathtaking glance at the social hub of Titanic — the Grand Staircase. As we literally felt the temperature drop, we learned details of the sinking, touched an ‘iceberg’ and read theories of the tragic tale. Unique to the Exhibition are more than 20 never-before-seen artifacts including gaming chips, passenger personal papers, and decorative sections from the staircase, as well as the ‘Big Piece’ (see photo on page 57). The at-your-own-pace experience was the perfect way to begin a whirlwind week of some of the city’s best entertainment. Next on our list was the highly anticipated show, The Mentalist, at the prestigious V Theater at Planet Hollywood Casino. Gerry McCambridge is The Mentalist and the creative force and inspiration behind the hit TV show “The Mentalist”. He has been amazing audiences for more than 30 years in television, Broadway, and now as a Vegas headliner. We were mesmerized as he seemed to read the minds of selected audience members. My mother and I had the opportunity to participate in one of the acts where Gerry predicted a phone number that I randomly chose from the Las Vegas telephone directory. After the show, we met with Gerry and I would add “Nicest Guy in Vegas” to

Marking the arrival at our destination at the famous welcome sign in Las Vegas. Fun fact: When the lights from the sign are replaced, the old lights are offered as a commemorative souvenir at www.OfficialLasVegasLight. com and a portion of the proceeds from the sales are donated to local charities. his many other awards which include “Best Bargain Show in all of Las Vegas” and “Top 10 Absolutely Have To See” shows in Las Vegas. His nightly Las Vegas show is now approaching its 6th year and his 1,350+ performances makes him the longest running and most successful Mentalist show in Las Vegas history. A once-in-a-lifetime adventure and, certainly, a highlight of our trip was the fourand-one-half-hour “Dream Catcher Sunset” Tour of the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas via Maverick Helicopters! Offering VIP-level service from various departure locations including Las Vegas, South Las Vegas Valley, and the Grand Canyon, Maverick Helicopters has the highest level of safety and service in the industry, the newest and most advanced fleet in the world, and more than 15 years experience. Our ultimate sunset tour began with a flight out of Las Vegas to Hidden

Valley and the Valley of Fire, where we saw awe-inspiring views of red rock and sandstone formations, as well as some of the most remote, desolate and fascinating desert landscapes imaginable. Our friendly and professional pilot, Sean Abellana, provided interesting details about the majestic areas as we passed over the Valley of Fire, and headed to the Grand Canyon, where we descended and landed 3,500 feet below the rim in Hualapai Indian Territory. Picnic tables were waiting there as we were served champagne and a light snack as we marveled at our surroundings some 300 feet above the mighty Colorado River. The excitement continued as we flew over Lake Mead, Fortification Hill (an extinct volcano), and Hoover Dam at dusk. As the sun began to set, we hovered over Downtown Las Vegas and passed over the Bellagio, Luxor, Paris and the many megaresorts of the Las Vegas Strip. When in

Vegas, a Maverick helicopter tour is a must! With such an exhilarating experience setting the bar, the evening’s plans certainly answered the expectations for a fabulous night out in Vegas — Viva ELVIS by Cirque du Soleil showing at the stunning Aria Resort & Casino in CityCenter. A tribute to the life and music of Elvis Presley, Viva ELVIS is a harmonious fusion of dance, acrobatics and live music. Nostalgia, modernity and raw emotion provide the backdrop for his immortal voice and the exhilaration and beauty of his music. Created in the image of The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll – powerful, sexy, whimsical, truly unique and larger than life – the show highlights an American icon who transformed popular music and whose image embodies the freedom, excitement and turbulence of his era. Significant moments in his life – intimate, playful and grandiose – blend with the timeless songs that remain

Viva ELVIS: 1) By creating a reinterpretation of the music of Elvis, Cirque du Soleil presents the songs of the King of Rock ’n’ Roll in a contemporary form that evokes the spirit of Elvis in every way; 2) Jailhouse Rock marked the pinnacle of Elvis’ movie career. It’s also the centerpiece of Viva ELVIS. A dramatic, mysterious entrance gives way to a high-octane dance and acrobatic fusion performed to the pulsating beat of the familiar anthem. In a tribute to the original film sequence, the iconic prison set is dramatically updated in a number that flips the world upside down; 3, 4) Le Rêve is a unique entertainment experience with elaborate effects and powerful performances that conjure an imaginary world, at once intensely beautiful and breathtaking. The cast of 92 artists in Le Rêve represents 17 countries. The majority of the performers come from competitive gymnastics, swimming or circus backgrounds. Their past accomplishments include National, World and Olympic competitions. Each member of the cast must become scuba certified before performing in the theater.

5) The Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition showcases the largest piece of the Titanic ever recovered – the ‘Big Piece.’ This 15-ton piece of the ship’s starboard hull was raised 12,500 feet from the ocean floor and took more than 80 years, and two attempts, to surface; 6) The iceberg is composed of 16x9 sheets of metal which operate off a compressor; the ice wall draws the humidity in the air and this moisture freezes to the sheet of metal and it builds into a thick sheet of ice, similar to freezer coils in the first refrigerators. www.DestinMagazine.com

as relevant today as when they first hit the top of the charts. Viva ELVIS focuses on the essential humanity of the one superstar whose name will forever be linked with the history of Las Vegas and the entire world of entertainment: Elvis Presley. I am not sure that we exhaled during this truly magical and memorable show! The next evening’s entertainment included the glorious Le Rêve, where one may “discover a world where dreams swim in the air and dance on water” – literally! Although I had previously seen this beautiful show, I could not resist sharing it with my mother. Presented exclusively at Wynn Las Vegas, Le Rêve offers breathtaking performances in an intimate aqua theater-in-the-round. The show features aerial acrobatics, provocative choreography and artistic athleticism. Live music and elaborate special effects immerse the audience into a world of fantasy, adventure and intrigue. An absolutely jaw-dropping feast for the eyes and mind! Tickets are available at www.wynnlasvegas.com. As our fabulous week in Vegas came to a close, we found ourselves back where we began — at Luxor — in a packed house with Criss Angel, where he, in partnership with Cirque du Soleil, presented CRISS ANGEL Believe, an illusion spectacular. The most watched magician in television history and recently awarded the Magician of the Century, he brought his arsenal of 40 mind-blowing illusions to the stage where we witnessed the most dangerous, exciting, and comedy-filled presentation of unparalleled illusions. We couldn’t believe our eyes! While our Vegas vacation included no showgirls or shot glasses, my mother’s synopsis of the week —“a trip of a lifetime”— made every memory of the journey even sweeter. Wherever you choose to escape from your regular routine, make every moment count. Viva Las Vegas! b
