letter from the EDITOR November in Los Cabos is my personal favorite month. The weather is just about perfect, with cooler days, warm evenings and ideal ocean water temperatures. Apart from the weather (which is pretty much perfect year round and us locals tend to get "picky"), I also enjoy November due to all of the cultural happenings in the area, such as the colorful Day of the Dead, the Los Cabos International Film Festival, the Sabor a Cabo Food and Wine Festival (this takes place early December) among other events. This month also marks the start of the Thursday evening San José Art Walk, and farmers markets open back-up after a summer break. Lots to do. I hope you enjoy November in Los Cabos as much as I do! Within the pages of Destino Los Cabos you can find useful information that will help you make the most of your vacation. Our goal is for you to have the best possible experience in Los Cabos. Don't forget that you can find all of our useful information online at: www.DestinoLosCabos.com. Enjoy!

Everything you need to know about Baja Sur

Los Cabos
(the capes) is located in the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the Capital of the state. If you take a look at the Baja Sur map you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful and the winds are stronger. If you go further north along the Pacific side the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months. The mountains meet the desert and the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pineoak forests. The main climate of the region is arid to semi-arid; however, there are farming areas where the soil is wet, especially on the Pacific side of the Peninsula.
"The aquarium of the world"
is how Jacques Cousteau described the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this "trap" and either stayed in the warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. Ready to explore? 6

destinations Cabo San Lucas
This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach, the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.
San José del Cabo
Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.
The Corridor
The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).
Todos Santos
Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.
East Cape
People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, Nationally Protected coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and those who just want to get away from it all.
La Paz
La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.
Loreto
Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

useful information CURRENCY EXCHANGE Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will get your change in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate.
ATMs - The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the street will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.
CASH OR CARD? Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only places. Always ask beforehand and carry cash. Your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.
GROCERIES - In Cabo San Lucas, Wal-Mart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Wal-Mart and Mega. If you just need to grab something quickly, OXXO stores are small, reasonably priced convenient stores located all over town.
HOW DO I DIAL? The local area code is 624 To dial to other countries: 00 + country code (1, 2 or 3 digits) + number From a Mexican land line or cell phone: To a Mexican long distance number: 01 + 3 digit area code + 7 digit number To a Mexican cell phone number: 3 digit area code + 7 digit number To a U.S. phone number: 00 + 1 + 3 digit area code + 7 digit number From your U.S. cell phone: To a Mexican land line or cell phone: 011 52 + 3 digit area code + number To a U.S. phone number: 00 + 1 + 3 digit area code + number Some U.S. cell phone carriers have arrangements with Mexican carriers and when you travel here your cell phone uses their towers. If this is your case, you will have to dial as if you had a Mexican phone. U.S. TOLL FREE NUMBERS (International rates will apply): To a 1 (800): 00 + 1 + 880 + phone number To a 1 (888): 00 + 1 + 881 + phone number To a 1 (877): 00 + 1 + 882 + phone number To a 1 (866): 00 + 1 + 883 + phone number DRIVING Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway. The cost varies from $63.00 to $75.00 pesos, depending on your destination. ALTO STOP

BOATING & FISHING
With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.
SEASONAL FISHING CHART
BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos Located in La Playita just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in the area with 200 available slips 14
www.DestinoLosCabos.com
for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

SNORKELING & SCUBA DIVING

SCUBA DIVING DESTINATIONS Note: travel time is from the Cabo San Lucas marina. Land’s End Intermediate-Advanced - 50’-60’ Five minutes by boat and you can share the water with sea lions and moray eels, with a sunken boat visible in the Falls. The canyon runs from the depths of the Cabo San Lucas bay to within 30 feet of the beach. Pelican Rock Beginners - 25’-80’ This large rock attracts many tropical fish and is only five minutes from shore. Neptune’s Finger Advanced - 80’-100’ A spectacular canyon wall dive. Cabeza de Ballena Beginners - 20’-40’ A 25-minute boat ride leads to a dive through large boulders with many fish. Cabo Pulmo Beginner-Advanced - 30’-100’ A one hour drive east of San José or five minutes by boat and you’ll find the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez. SNORKELING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkelling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock
A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock.
Lover’s Beach This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkelling in the area. This eight-fingered coral reef is about a 1.5-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!
ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES Photo courtesy Wild Canyon
Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, backcountry ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Parasailing If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat!
Buggy, Atv, Or Bike Rentals There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid drivers’ license. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike, beach cruiser, or joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Just make sure to wear a helmet!
Wet Fun Water Park Located about 20 minutes from San José, this water park has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms, a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps water on the bystanders bellow. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at km 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends.
Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Baja Sur has been a popular surfing destination since the ‘50s. The East Cape is popular for kite surfing and the Pacific coast has several surf breaks where you will find less crowds. Available at Medano beach or in the Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo.
STAND UP PADDLING
There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout and while enjoying nature. At Medano beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.
KITE SURFING
This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles. 16

If you’re looking for the action, this is where it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No gracias.” Water sports are available such as jet skis, parasailing, flyboarding, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, and more. LOVER’S BEACH
Imagine floating in a turquoise bay with pink sand, snorkelling with colorful fish or walking for hundreds of yards in waist-high water, every beach in South Baja offers something unique. Here is a list of the must-see beaches to help you decide which is the one for you or just visit them all!
M E DANO
Getting there is an adventure in itself, due to the fact that it is reachable only by boat, kayak or stand up paddle board. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Your captain will cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive, you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so swim on Lover’s Beach only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. This beach is accessible only by boat. Tips: There are a couple of vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services. An hour or two should be enough time to explore this natural wonderland.
SANTA MARIA
Santa Maria is a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral-colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This familyfriendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. However, the beach does have brand new bathrooms and palapas. Location: Travelling west from Cabo 20 www.DestinoLosCabos.com SANTA M ARI A
San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.

Chileno is a very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newlyinstalled palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. Public restrooms are available and there are plenty of palapas for shade. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. Tips: If you visit Chileno on a weekend, make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and, if you beat the crowds, you’ll be guaranteed a palapa to yourself for some muchneeded shade. Bring snorkelling gear!
PALMILLA
Palmilla beach is known for its familyfriendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at Km. 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.
COSTA AZUL
If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot you can find it here without driving out of town. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where the Cabo Surf Hotel and Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and stand-up paddle boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer, and in the winter this is a good spot for
snorkelling and swimming. Location: Exit into the arroyo at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge. Tips: Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers.
CERRITOS
Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day, maybe even get a massage on the beach. If you want to be active, you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop. Location: Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area. Tips: Lounge chairs, restrooms, food and drinks are available at The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful on a big day, so swim with caution.
LOS ARBOLITOS Cabo Pulmo
-
Cabo Pulmo is a Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkelling in the area. This eight-fingered coral reef is about a 1.5 hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it. Location: Take Highway 1 towards Los Barriles. Exit towards La Ribera and continue south towards Cabo Pulmo. Pass the small town of Cabo Pulmo and in about 4 km you will find a gate on your right to access Los Arbolitos, this is where you pay the access fee. Tips: There is a small $30.00 pesos fee to access this beach which will allow you to use a fresh water shower and bathrooms. Palapas are available, as well as kayaking equipment rentals. Bring cash!
BALANDRA
A stunning bay that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist high water that is crystal clear with shades of blue turquoise. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock” as well as other interesting rock formations. Pictures just don’t do it justice. You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra! Location: About 30 minutes from the boardwalk in La Paz. Simply follow the main drag along the boardwalk, then through Costa Baja Golf Course and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed. There are palapas, but not a lot. You can rent kayaks and snorkel gear. Everything you need to know about Baja Sur

DESTINO: What makes 2017, a special year for Sabor a Cabo? Mr. Turquie: Mr. Turquie: This year, we will offer different things, like distributing participant restaurants in different zones, all designed with ambience and live music from start to end, when we will all enjoy the stellar final concert. Also, people will find less tables and more cocktail booths, lounge style areas, and more, to invite comfort. DESTINO: Tell us about the stellar program of this year? Mr. Turquie: Mr. Turquie: We are still deciding who will be the star of this year’s concert. We are looking to present somebody that is relevant and attractive to the local community, nationals and foreigners, as much as all tourists, and the North American expat community that lives in Los Cabos. The event is happening December 9th, beginning at 5:00pm MT, and ending before midnight. The concert usually begins around 10:00pm MT. The participants include more than 50 restaurants and 25 wineries, presenting their oenologists and owners. THE CHERRY ON TOP As if the promise of spending your Cabo day enjoying the art of degustation - tasting innovative and delicious Mexican gourmet dishes and regional Baja wines, listening to music in a most relaxing and fun ambiance, between Cabo moguls, mega stars, friends and lovers - was not enough to inspire you to attend, here is the cherry on top. Sabor a Cabo is Los Cabos offering to you. Every restaurant participates with an amazing display of their signature recipes, and chefs have the opportunity to serve more than 3,000 attendees. Everyone, except for the star band and those dedicated to the stage and production efforts, donates their produce and products, along with their time, in service of your enjoyment. Entrance costs from $100 to $300 US dollars per ticket, and includes all food and drinks for the night, and the concert. A percentage of the money gathered through tickets sales, is estimated before the closing of the event. This percentage will be donated to each of the beneficiaries, like it is done every year! You’ll be happy to know that this money has provided for ambulances, fire trucks, and needed equipment. This year, the venue owners’ foundation that supports local families affected by recent natural disasters, will be included.
¡Buen provecho! Want to learn some Spanish for such a special day? “Gracias por los alimentos que vamos a compartir y gracias a los que los prepararon con amor para nosotros.” May Sabor a Cabo bring you happiness! i Everything you need to know about Baja Sur

EX-PAT CHRONICLES
"bioluminescence occurs here during the summer months, just not all the time." I step into the sand, a light show erupting beneath my foot, and consider how fortunate I am. Paddleboards in the water, we head out into the bay, five of us coasting upon a dark ocean. Each paddle sends trails of underwater fireworks floating beside the boards. Diving into the warm black sea, we emerge covered in sparkling light. We glide up the coast, the beauty, and history of the land beside us, the crosses of Rancho Las Cruces watching over from above. i
The Rich History Of Rancho Las Cruces a one-lane road snaking through hills of dry foliage and fifteen- foot tall cactuses. In front of me, black pavement winds through the beige countryside heading out towards the Sea Of Cortez. The contrast in colors; green plants, brown hills, blue sky, and white clouds, causes me to stop and stare. I'm 20 miles southeast of La Paz, but here, the world is uninhabited and wild. Pavement turns to dirt as I approach the coast. The road narrows and washboards shake the car's frame. I dodge a group of cows grazing against the roadside, and two wild donkey’s scatter as I drive around a corner too fast. I pass through one security gate, and then another, before arriving at the hotel’s property line. Rancho Las Cruces is massive and remote, home to 10,000 total acres and 7 miles of private, pristine coastline. I slow down to process the beauty, hoping the tranquility of untouched nature will settle upon my busy mind. Out in the Sea of Cortez, I see an idyllic island on the horizon. It’s the Island of Cerralvo, known to the Spanish Conquistadors as the Island of Pearls, and catching sight of it reminds me of this land’s historic past. However, in the Baja, time can feel deceiving. At first glance, not much has changed in the five hundred years since Hernan Cortez landed on this very coast. Opposite the ocean, mountains rise upwards into the sky. The peaks are bold and steep, a rugged balance to the seas calming tides. The name of this range is traced back to the landing of Cortez in 1535. Believing he had discovered an island, the famous conquistador planted three crosses, baptized the land, and named it Santa Cruz. This rich history comes full circle as I approach the heart of Rancho Las Cruces. There, atop a large hill, at the meeting point of sand and sea, are replicas of the three crosses. I continue towards check-in, under the shadow of the crosses, passing haciendas with white walls and red roofs. There’s a private beach leading to turquoise water, and on the sand sits lounge chairs, volleyball nets, sea kayaks and paddleboards. Upon arrival, I’m invited to dine at the restaurant for lunch. It’s situated on the southern end of the resort, offering picturesque views of the sea. I sit inside to escape the heat, eating underneath a painting of a Spanish general, above an ornate, antique chest. I consume more food than necessary and drink a jalapeno Margarita. Outside in the courtyard, I watch guests enjoying a dip under the mid-day sun. I drop my bags at the room, located in the newest building on the property. The house has a modern design, with high ceilings, large wooden doors, a central living room, and a plethora of windows to take in the jaw-dropping views. Plush rooms connect from side doors to the house’s main attraction, a pool overlooking the sea. I take a dip and then proceed to nap in a shaded lawn chair. Near sunset, my better half arrives along with a few other friends, one of which is our host for the night. We have dinner under the stars and shoot a few games of pool before heading out to the private beach. It’s dark as we pull paddleboards down through the sand, and the ocean is overcast and misty. Closer to the water we begin to see it - the white-blue flickers of light. "This is normal," says our friend, 26

WHAT WOULD I DO? on my vacation in Cabo by Alex Navarro, local outdoor adventure expert This month I would like to share some top choices of things I would choose to do if I was vacationing here. For starters, a cold “Chelada”, that is a cold beer in a beer mug with ice cubes, squeezed lime and sea salt on the mug’s rim. Different versions exist like the “Michelada” which adds crushed peppers to the salt on the rim, and pepper and spice sauces to the beer. And some others like the “Clamato” which adds oyster juice to the beer and even has oysters inside, and some even have cooked shrimp on the mug rim. Amazing! Later, some ceviche tostadas are a must. Either fish ceviche or shrimp ceviche, or one of each, or even a mixed tostada of the two. Ceviche is quite popular all over Mexico and South America. It is basically diced seafood marinated and cooked in lime juice, mixed with fresh diced veggies like tomatoes, onions, chili peppers, and sometimes cucumber or even mango, and placed on top of a tostada, which is a baked or fried corn tortilla. This is one of the freshest dishes you can have here. Then, of course I would have a fresh raw fish sashimi at any of the sushi spots all over Cabo, and also find fresh clams in their shells at a seafood restaurant or even a sidewalk cart that serves them. I think a Cabo experience is about a kind of balance of your many sides, like your party side, your relaxing side and nurturing side, and your outdoors adventure side and many more for sure. So, I would definitely spend my energy a bit on all three of those sides. Like maybe a little day partying at Medano Beach which just goes off every day! Any establishment on that beach is a sure bet. Plus, for sure all night partying at the popular and iconic Cabo San Lucas party strip which offers innumerable bars and dance clubs to literally party the night away. In San Jose del Cabo, on Friday and Saturday the must go spot for some pre-party drinks, food and funky house music is called “District”, and the best place for electronic music is also in San Jose and is called “Mixology”, a must visit if you are into that kind of music. For all other kinds of music like classic rock, hip hop, top 40, reggaeton, R&B, 80’s, 90’s, Latin, etc., the scene at the Cabo San Lucas party strip I mentioned before is the spot to be. After getting my party dose in, it is now time for some relaxation. I probably don’t even have to mention all this about relaxation because most all of you are going to do this anyway, but I don’t want you to forget, so let’s go over some ideas. Obviously, a full-body massage anywhere and any style, and spending endless beach time under a thatched “palapa” shade, with snacks like a ceviche tostada and plenty of cold drinks like a “Chelada”, would be just perfect! Some swimming in the ocean or in the pool to loosen up my body would fit nicely in my plans as well. Furthermore, some fish tacos or an early dinner at any of the world class restaurants throughout Cabo would be the optimum choice right before an early bedtime, enjoying my comfy and fresh hotel room. This plan has a particular objective in mind, to be up early the next morning feeling fresh and renewed before a full day of outdoor adventures. Beginning with an early beach jog with some great stretching and maybe even a little beach yoga. If the waves are good, head out to the surf break and get some rides. Of course, eat a delicious breakfast and later in the day a reviving lunch after the surf session. Maybe, that evening or the next morning, check out the hot springs and waterfalls near Santiago Town, just one hour from Cabo, and experience a mix of relaxation and adventure in nature. Keeping in mind that there might not be good waves such days, I would swap activities. Instead of surfing, going snorkeling or scuba diving, or maybe sailing or renting ATV’s, or going on the many extreme and fun zip lines all around. The options are pretty much limitless here in Cabo to really enjoy your time in all kinds of ways. Here within the magazine you will surely find many great ideas to pack your vacation with memorable and adventurous times. So, thanks again for visiting us and I am sure this season will offer the most amazing times for all of you, our fantastic visitors, and also for us locals who are lucky to call Cabo home and are very happy to host you. i 27

THE WHALE SHARKS OF LA PAZ: SOME NEW RULES by L aura Ty r rel l, PA DI I D C St af f inst r uc tor and d ive guid e at C ab o Trek The largest shark in the ocean on record is 40 feet. This record belongs to the majestic whale shark. A generous population of these enormous fish live 15 minutes away from the marina in La Paz. However, fishermen, divers, and those that live on the water will swear they have seen 50-60 footers gliding by on the surface. The bay acts as a catchment area of microscopic sea creatures blown by the north winds and eventually getting stuck in the curvature of the bay. That’s why the sharks are here; this forms the base of their diet. This gentle giant has no teeth and uses filters to feed in much the same way as a whale. The name ‘whale shark’ is partly attributed to this fact but the name also comes from the animal’s sheer size in the water. And guess what? You can swim with them. Over the past few years, an abundance of tour operators have enjoyed taking tourists from all over the peninsula to see this awesome animal. Demand is high as this is one of the few places on Earth where sightings are pretty much 90% guaranteed at the right time of year. Fleets of boats leave in droves from shore, arriving only 15 minutes later, once the first shark is found. Keen tourists don their snorkel gear and get ready to jump in and swim towards the shark as the boat captain expertly places them in the water. As a tour guide myself, I’m pleased to report that most tour operators are respectful of the sharks and don’t harass the animals or put too many people in the water at once. But, there are the odd few. Those with their own boats travelling in from any unregulated embarkation points are just one example. Many people don’t pay for an official tour where the tour guide will brief you specifically on good in-water behaviors and how to treat the animal. For this reason, now all tour guides and captains must train in a 4-day course, the waters will be policed and boat licenses checked more than they ever have been before. Positive stuff if the agencies responsible keep their promises. New regulations include staying 10 feet (3 meters) distance away from the shark’s head, no more than 7 people in the water with one shark at a time and no touching the animal. Some regulations are up for debate. For example, there is talk that the boats will be allocated a specific section of water by GPS and will only have chance to swim with one shark. The whale shark’s main ‘predator’ are humans. In the bay of La Paz most sharks have some kind of propeller mark or other man-made injury and it is very good to see the authorities taking charge for the sake of the sharks. Make sure when you go to see the whale sharks you choose a responsible tour operator with a proper license to guide you: it makes a huge difference in your experience. i

s folks at home in the U.S. are reaching for their winter coats while making plans for Thanksgiving, here in Los Cabos, residents are preparing for two of their busiest months. Farther up the coast in East Cape and La Paz, anglers are expecting the arrival of the annual North Winds that can alter sportfishing dramatically. Speaking of La Paz and East Cape, according to locals, both areas are currently enjoying epic yellowfin tuna fishing, as well as a good dorado bite. In addition, there is still a sprinkling of wahoo around. Many credit the recent flurry of fishing activity to the return of sardina, a favored live bait that has been among the missing for several years. Up at Los Arenas/Muertos Bay, they have been congregating conveniently near the panga launch ramp, literally drawing small tuna, roosterfish and dorado as close as a couple of football fields from shore. At East Cape, similar action can be found from shore for jack crevalle and roosterfish that are cavorting from bait school to bait school. Farther offshore, yellowfin tuna from football-size to over 100 pounds are teaching unsuspecting anglers how tough they can be. At Puerto Los Cabos, the popular Gordo Bank offshore is beginning to produce some of the larger tuna that usually appear this time of year, along with some of the larger dorado (mixed with smaller ones that should be released). Both larger black marlin and blue marlin have begun to appear in good numbers ... a surefire confirmation that fall has arrived. Good news for the many visitors drawn here every year by the area’s reputation of having some of the best billfish action found anywhere in the world. The action is so close to the IGY Marina that half-day billfish trips are a possibility. Underscoring the sportfishing prospects usually expected during Nov. are two popular events that set new attendance and catch records for several years in a row: Last year (2016), the WON/Yamaha Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot had a record breaking year with huge fish, number of teams (168 -- 25 more than 2015), and cash payouts ($749,500 to five teams). In its 19th year this year, the event on Nov. 1- 4 is poised to be even bigger. Registration on the 1st and weigh-ins on the 2nd - 3rd beginning at 3 p.m. take place in front of the Tesoro on the Malecon. Spectators are always welcome to attend as all the huge yellowfin tuna, wahoo and dorado are weighed. More information: http://www. loscabostunajackpot.com/ The 5th Annual Los Cabos Big Game Charter Boat Classic, Nov. 14 -17 is unique because it’s the only free-entry fishing tournament on the Baja California Peninsula. It’s designed for visiting anglers who are fishing on local fleet boats in Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo and East Cape. There are junior angler awards, lady angler awards and billfish release prizes. An angler event, it offers $40,000 in cash purse, plus prizes. Awards will be for the adult angler(s) 18 years of age and older catching the three largest tuna, wahoo and dorado each day, with $10,000 awarded each day. Individuals can choose to fish one or all days of the tournament. More info: www.loscabostournaments.com/los-cabos-big-gamecharter-boat-classic Spectators and anglers alike will be treated with the opportunity to view or catch some spectacular giant tuna. Over the years, the WON/Yamaha Los Cabos Tuna Jackpots have had yellowfin tuna up to 383 pounds brought to the scale. Los Cabos Big Game Charter Boat Classic also invites the public to observe their weigh-ins at all three locations, which accounts for the large crowds that gather during the weigh-in for both events. Sorry we can’t offer winter coats and stuff ... the best we at Los Cabos can offer now is some of the most extraordinary fishing on the planet! i

Each Thursday evening from November through June, the streets of historic San José del Cabo’s vibrant Art District come alive with color and creativity. Hidden behind the church off of Plaza Mijares (the main square) Obregon Street is closed to traffic from 5 to 9 p.m. for Art Walk. Visit the many galleries and enjoy a glass of complementary wine or spirits while taking in the warm and friendly atmosphere. Safe for families, it’s a chance to meet artists, attend new exhibits and experience a very special side of Los Cabos that many visitors may miss. Art Walk was created by the Gallery District Association to attract art lovers and tourists to the area. Members are recognizable by distinctive plaques posted on each gallery. Exhibiting genres from paintings and sculpture to ceramics, folk art, photography and jewelry, it’s easy to fall in love with a favorite piece. Along with the 14 member galleries are many shops with notable local artists and artisans. The Art District is compact and easy to walk. From Plaza Mijares, cross the street to the church and turn right. You’ll first find an eclectic mix of established Mexican artists at the Patricia Mendoza Gallery on the corner of Calle Obregon. Further on to the left, view contemporary art from Spain’s Basque artist Enrique Bascón. A few doors away, Corsica’s museum quality fine art and sculptures are from renowned Mexican Masters and upcoming talents. Desértica’s eclectic contemporary collection, and exquisite Paquime pottery from Chihuahua State at Mata Ortiz are next, bringing you to Calle Morelos. Turn left for some of Baja’s top contemporary and abstract artists at Leah Porter’s Casa Dahlia, a few doors up. Back on Obregon at the corner of Morelos, El Armario’s Mexican folk art and an al fresco coffee shop has been in the ‘hood since 2002. Continuing up Obregon, Muvezi’s African Shona sculptures and artwork. Close by, Ivan Guaderrama’s contemporary Christian paintings and sculptures focus on expressions of love, faith, and music through the themes of angels, hearts and abstracts. Next door, Old Town’s Gallery’s seasoned artists capture the color, culture and light of Baja California Sur with paintings in realistic genres. At Calle Guerrero, turn left for artist Ida Victoria Gustafson’s two-story, high-end gallery with a colorful and eclectic collection of original art and sculpture from North American and Mexican artists, as well as a custom frame studio. If you’re driving from Cabo San Lucas or the Corridor, plan to park on Calle Centenario, the boulevard that runs behind the downtown area. For easiest access, park close to the foot of Morelos Street (look for El Encanto Suites on the corner) and walk from there. You’ll immediately be drawn into a charming and festive atmosphere. Stop at Plaza Paulina to visit Julian Garcia’s “Arte” for paintings and distinctive sculptures in bronze, steel and stone. The international abstract painter and sculptor, Frank Arnold, is around the corner on Comonfort, facing Centenario. Plan to arrive early for Art Walk and stay for dinner. The Art District boasts some of Los Cabos’ finest restaurants and many feature live music. Popular spots are La Dolce at the back of the main square, Jazmin’s, H Restaurant, La Lupita, Petit Masala and Baja Brewing. The Art District can be very busy Thursday nights and reservations are strongly recommended. If you miss out on Art Walk, visit the Art District any time, most galleries and shops are open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. or thereabouts. H+ Hospital is one of Los Cabos’ newest hospitals. With a vision to expand access to quality care in the community, H+ has partnered with the International Community Foundation (ICF) and other local nonprofit partner organizations to create the Give+ Campaign. U.S. and Mexican donors, who are passionate about improving health and quality of life for all residents in Southern Baja, can support H+ Hospital and local groups to identify and provide care to individuals from the most vulnerable communities in the region. Through this campaign, the hospital provides reduced rates on essential lab work and testing, probono services for special needs cases, and participates in coordinating medical care campaigns. In 2017, thanks to the generosity of supporters of the Give+ Campaign, two very critical medical campaigns, Jornada Unidos de Corizon, we conducted. At the start of the year, H+ Hospital joined forces with the nonprofit organization Corazón de Niño (which identifies children in BCS in need of heart surgery), and their team of generous doctors, staff, and volunteers, were able to save the lives of 14 children. Cecy, Leslie, Kimberly, Blanca, Marisela, Juan Diego, Yerit, Emiliano, Lupita, Luis Eduardo, Daniela, Victor, Ruth and Emiliano were all born with a congenital heart disease, and thanks to this collaboration, they can now live normal lives. In June, the second round of children’s heart surgeries took place. Once again, the team of doctors, Corazon de Niños, H+, Amigos de los Niños, and the all-important volunteers came together to provide critical medical care for 41 young people, including lifesaving surgeries for 21 BCS kids whose families lack the financial resources to pay for these complicated procedures. Additionally, through the Give+ campaign, local nonprofit Red Autismo has accessed reduced rates for lab work and diagnostic testing, enabling them to better serve children with autism and their families in Los Cabos, BCS. Support for the Give+ Campaign was featured in two internationally recognized community events this year, the Los Cabos Open of Surf and the Mexican Tennis Open- Los Cabos. Both events featured special Live Auctions to raise funds for the Give+ Campaign. Four of the children who received heart surgeries in the 2nd Jornada participated in the Tennis Open “Kids Day” activities and played with the Pros! Providing a brighter future through much needed medical care is the goal. With continued support to Give+ more medical services and campaigns can be organized and performed for the well-being of those most in need. If you would like to know more about this important Give+ Campaign and about making a U.S. tax deductible donation, please contact Alana Ortez, ICF’s Senior Program Officer, Health- alana@icfdn.org. i

WHERE DO THE LOCALS EAT?
When friends, family and clients come to town, the first thing everyone asks (aside from activity recommendations) is Where Do the Locals Eat? The hidden gems of any town I’ve traveled to are usually off the beaten path, and the following four restaurants are no exception. If you are not acquainted with Cabo, I suggest taking a taxi or asking a local for directions because nobody wants to be lost in an unfamiliar city, especially if you don’t speak the language. If you are looking for authentic, delicious local food that won’t break the bank, here are my suggestions:
Restaurant Bar Campestre Campestre has been one of my go-to restaurants, long before I even moved to Cabo. Every time I flew down, Campestre would be on my list of places I MUST eat while I was in town. Fast forward to living full time in Cabo, and I have yet to find better chilaquiles anywhere! If I had to choose just five foods to eat for the rest of my life, Campestre chilaquiles would be on my list. For those who haven’t tried them, chilaquiles are a Mexican comfort food traditionally made with day old tortillas that are cut and fried into crispy chips, then simmered in a red or green sauce and topped with chicken, beef or eggs followed by onion, queso fresco (white cheese), cream and avocado. It’s also rumored to be a fantastic hangover remedy (which has proven to be true after many late nights out in Cabo). The media orden or half portion is more than enough for one person, although I have been known to eat a full order (to the shock and awe of my fellow diners) and feel overly stuffed for the entire day! Aside from chilaquiles, Campestre has a great assortment of breakfast foods, including pancakes, omelets, fruit platters and fresh squeezed juices you can order by the glass or pitcher. Lunch and dinner won’t disappoint either with large portions of traditional Mexican food at very reasonable prices. I love the arrachera, a big serving of beef steak served with rice, beans, tortillas, and guacamole. Don’t be surprised if you show up and see a line out the door, as this place is frequented by almost every local I know. Open Monday – Friday 7:30am – 9:00pm and Sunday 7:30am – 2:00pm. Closed Saturdays. @RestaurantBarCampestreLosCabos 36

La Brisa Mariscos & Bar Calling all seafood lovers...La Brisa is going to be your new favorite spot! La Brisa serves the freshest fish, ceviche, mariscos, sushi, sashimi, aguachile, tostadas & more. Their famous ͞Titanic Tostada͟ is a crowd favorite. If raw fish isn’t really your thing, try one of their mouth-watering hamburgers (choices include crispy shrimp, fish, or beef) on a house made bun, served artfully on a wood plank. La Brisa is one of the few places in town serving ice cold artisanal beer along with their full bar menu. There are TV’s for watching your favorite sports games or fights, lots of parking, and anair-conditioned area for the late summer months when dining outdoors gets uncomfortable. Located across from Auto Zone on highway 19 on the way to Todos Santos. Open daily from 11:00am – 11:00pm. @LaBrisaCabo El Pollo De Oro De Los Cabos For slow roasted rotisserie chicken, BBQ ribs and a variety of Mexican dishes, Cabo locals love El Pollo De Oro! They serve generous portions and the prices can’t be beat. Where else can you get a full order of BBQ ribs or roasted chicken (with rice, macaroni salad, tortillas and salsa) for only $140 pesos (roughly $8.24usd)? The full order could easily feed two people, or one if you are super hungry. Not only is the food great, but the service is excellent too! Don’t feel like dining in? El Pollo De Oro has a convenient to go window where you can order, pay and have your food in just minutes. They even have a free dedicated parking lot on Calle 20 De Noviembre. Just remember to get your ticket stamped and tip the lot attendant on your way out. In a City where parking is limited, this lot is a major bonus. Located on Calle
Maria Jimenez Restaurante Mexicano For a true rustic Mexican restaurant experience, Maria Jimenez is a fantastic choice! This family run restaurant features authentic Mexican décor with hand painted plates, colorful artwork and even a wandering mariachi band. The marinated grilled chicken breast is my favorite (and a house specialty), served with black beans, rice and guacamole. But honestly, I’ve never tried anything I didn’t like at Maria Jimenez. Every guest receives a complimentary sopecito to start, which is a small corn patty with butter, sauce, black beans, cream and cheese. Wash it down with a fresh margarita, chips and fire roasted salsa that I could eat by the spoonful. At Maria Jimenez, you will feel like you are splurging without spending a fortune. The staff is very friendly, warm and accommodating. When I had my last birthday here, they even came out singing the traditional Mexican Happy Birthday song and served a special cake my friend had brought for me. Just don’t forget to bring cash, because credit cards are not accepted here. Located three blocks back from Puerto Paraiso Mall. Open daily from 2:00pm – 10:00pm. Closed Mondays. @MariaJimenezCabo

EVENTS NOVEMBER 02 Día de los Muertos
2017 by Ami Doss
Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, is a holiday celebrated throughout all of Mexico. Unlike other popular celebrations, this multi-day holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to remember and pray for friends and family members who have died. This gathering is to help support their spiritual journey. Families will go to cemeteries to be with the souls of the departed and build private altars containing photos, memorabilia and favorite food and beverages of the their lost loved ones. Planning for this holiday will sometimes be made throughout the entire year, including what goods to be offered to the dead. Traditionally toys are brought for the children’s altars, and tequila is brought for the altars of the adults. Calaveras de azucar (small skulls made of sugar) are also popular during this threeday long event. Day of the Dead is not recognized as an official public holiday.

Comedy for Critters
What do you get when you mix Minnesota Nice with Harlem Badass?? A night filled with laughter! For one night only, go to Rita’s Fajitas Bar and Grill to enjoy a rare comedy night in Cabo. The best part is, you will be supporting Cabo Critters in the process. Cabo Critters is an animal rescue group of volunteers working in the communities of Los Cabos to rescue and rehabilitate local animals. Valiantly, the rescue group goes into the communities to help spay and neuter healthy street animals, provides education to families and children about how to care for a pet, and is a leader in the fight against animal cruelty. Cabo Critters is a no kill shelter and not only tries to save every animal they encounter, but to help it know love in its life. The shelter relies heavily on fundraising and donations to continue to provide desperately needed services to these animals. Rita’s Fajitas doors will open at 6pm for the start of the silent auction, as well as cocktails. Buffet (offering chicken, beef, or vegetarian options) will open at 6:30, followed by games and prizes at 7:20. 7:45 is the main event—the Fletch comedy show! After the show, the silent auction will close and raffles will be drawn—including the chance to win a sunset cruise for 6 donated by Rantin N’ Ravin Fishing Charters. Not ready to go home just yet?
