Los Cabos

(the capes) is located in the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the Capital of the state. If you take a look at the Baja Sur map you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful and the winds are stronger. If you go further north along the Pacific side the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months. The mountains meet the desert and the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pineoak forests. The main climate of the region is arid to semi-arid; however, there are farming areas where the soil is wet, especially on the Pacific side of the Peninsula.

"The aquarium of the world"

is how Jacques Cousteau described the Sea of Cortez.

It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this "trap" and either stayed in the warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. Ready to explore?

destinations Cabo San Lucas

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach, the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

San José del Cabo

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

The Corridor

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, Nationally Protected coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and those who just want to get away from it all.

La Paz

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

Loreto

Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings.

Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

useful information ATMs The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the street will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both.

Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will get your change in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate.

CASH OR CARD? Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only places. Always ask beforehand and carry cash. Your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

GROCERIES In Cabo San Lucas, Walmart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Walmart and Mega. If you need to grab something quickly, OXXO stores are reasonably priced convenient stores located all over town.

Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway. The cost varies from $63.00 to $75.00 pesos, depending on your destination.

BOATING & FISHING

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate your needs.

What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim.

Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost.

Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day.

THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet.

Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities.

Puerto Los Cabos Located in La Playita just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in the area with 200 available slips 16

for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels.

FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is.

What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost.

It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%.

Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

Prepare yourself for an incredible show of nature as you swim side by side with colourful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, sea turtles and more. The Sea of Cortez or the “Aquarium of the World” offers many opportunities to experience incredible underwater wildlife.

Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, backcountry ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation.

Parasailing If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat!

SNORKELING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkelling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat.

Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports.

Pelican Rock

Buggy, Atv, Or Bike Rentals There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid drivers’ license. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike, beach cruiser, or joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Just make sure to wear a helmet!

Lover’s Beach This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat.

Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers.

Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove.

Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, ropedoff area for swimming at this common tour destination.

Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkelling in the area. This eightfingered coral reef is about a 1.5hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve.

Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown.

Cactus-lovers may also want to check out the nearby cactus gardens Wirikuta, offering a large variety of cacti laid out in an artful outdoor setting.

A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock.

Wet Fun Water Park Located about 20 minutes from San José, this water park has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms, a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps water on the bystanders bellow. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape.

After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at km 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right.

Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends.

Sol de Mayo Waterfall Cascade Located about an hour and a half away from Los Cabos, the Sol de Mayo Oasis is yet another natural beauty of the Southern Baja California region. The hike leads the adventurous to a majestically beautiful oasis where everyone can swim and even dive into the cool, serene waters. Be sure to pack a lunch, and take plenty of water. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. The cost is $6 US per person to access the easy hike to the clear-water falls.

SURFING

Baja Sur has been a popular surfing destination since the ‘50s.

The East Cape is popular for kite surfing and the Pacific coast has several surf breaks where you will find less crowds. See our Baja Sur map and look for this symbol to locate the surf spots mentioned bellow.

Location: Pacific side right before arriving to Todos Santos.

Have you ever had a dream about flying like Superman or maybe swimming like a dolphin? Dreams can come true in Cabo! The FlyBoard is a device connected and powered by a personal watercraft, which allows propulsion underwater and in the air.

Users are connected to the board by wakeboard boots, under which, water pressure provides thrust. A certified trainer controls the power and height and you control all the movement. Available at Medano beach or in the Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo.

STAND UP PADDLING

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout and while enjoying nature. At Medano beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.

KITE SURFING

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles.

SEASONS June through November The summer months are known to be the best as the Southern Hemisphere’s swells send great waves to the Pacific, Cabo San Lucas, San José and the East Cape.

December through February East Cape and Costa Azul are on the flatter side. The Pacific can be good this time of year because it’s exposed to the west swell.

March through May This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

Medano Beach

If you’re looking for the action, this is where it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see.

Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador.

Tips: Be prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No gracias.” Water sports are available such as jet skis, parasailing, flyboarding, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, and more. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

Lover's Beach

Imagine floating in a turquoise bay with pink sand, snorkelling with colorful fish or walking for hundreds of yards in waist-high water, every beach in South Baja offers something unique. Here is a list of the must-see beaches to help you decide which is the one for you or just visit them all!

M E DANO

Getting there is an adventure in itself, due to the fact that it is reachable only by boat, kayak or stand up paddle board. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Your captain will cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive, you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so swim on Lover’s Beach only.

Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. This beach is accessible only by boat.

Tips: There are a couple of vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services. An hour or two should be enough time to explore this natural wonderland.

Santa Maria

Santa Maria is a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral-colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This familyfriendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. However, the beach does have brand new bathrooms and palapas.

Location:

Travelling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area.

Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.

Chileno

Chileno is a very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newly-installed palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. Public restrooms are available and there are plenty of palapas for shade.

Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway.

Tips: If you visit Chileno on a weekend, make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and, if you beat the crowds, you’ll be guaranteed a palapa to yourself for some much-needed shade. Bring snorkelling gear!

Palmilla

Palmilla beach is known for its family-friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach.

Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis.

Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at Km. 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel.

Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.

Costa Azul

If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot you can find it here without driving out of town. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the

DISCOVER restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where the Cabo Surf Hotel and Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and stand-up paddle boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer, and in the winter this is a good spot for snorkelling and swimming.

Location: Exit into the arroyo at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge.

Tips: Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers.

Cerritos

Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. If you want to be active, you can rent a boogie board or surf board or even take a surf lesson with one of the surf schools located on the beach.

Location: Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area.

Tips: Since there is no public restaurant or other facilities on the beach come prepared for a with food, drinks and beach gear The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful on a big day, so swim with caution.

Balandra

A stunning bay that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist high water that is crystal clear with shades of blue turquoise. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock” as well as other interesting rock formations. Pictures just don’t do it justice. You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra!

Location: About 30 minutes from the boardwalk in La Paz. Simply follow the main drag along the boardwalk, then through Costa Baja Golf Course and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach.

Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed. There are palapas, but not a lot. You can rent kayaks and snorkel gear. i

Environmental education is a well-established discipline that emphasizes the relationship between humans and the natural environment, ways to conserve it, preserve it, and manage its resources properly. It should be a subject inserted in classrooms or even indoors, very early on.

With the world becoming more globalized, with society so violent, and with the accelerated growth of cities that replace green spaces with concrete, it has been decreasing the child's direct contact with all elements of nature. In this paradigm, every day that passes children have spaces increasingly restricted to contact with the elements of the environment.

Then children are being forced to stay locked at home with the use of technologies as a source of leisure, which most of the time leads to them not knowing what the environment is or the problems they face.

A harmonious and ethical relationship between the human being and his environment and having the conservation and improvement of environmental conditions as a theme, can be developed from childhood to adulthood through formal and informal education.

Finally, environmental education in childhood awakens the child's awareness of preservation and citizenship. The child begins to understand, from an early age, that he must care for, preserve, and that the future depends on the balance between human and nature and the rational use of natural resources.

In the search to awaken individual and collective concern for environmental issues, guaranteeing access to information in adequate language, contributing to the development of a critical awareness, and stimulating the confrontation of environmental and social issues, Cabo Trek had the initiative of promoting activities of environmental education for kids entitled "Humpback Whale: Knowing to Preserve," in an interdisciplinary and experienced way and after the presentation, they all had the experience of seeing whales in their natural environment.

The objective of this activity is to sensitize children for marine conservation and promote the dissemination of scientific knowledge about marine life, with emphasis on humpback whales. In addition to promoting the incentive to a practical change of attitude, the development of new habits towards the use of natural resources promotes reflection on the ethical responsibility of our species and the planet as a whole. As a result, helping society achieve a sustainable environment will ensure life on this planet. i

ALL THAT'S FISHY From Land's End to La Paz

M O N T H LY F I SH I N G R E P O RT by Gar y Gra ham Jacques Cousteau referred to the Sea of Cortez which separates Baja from the mainland as “the world's aquarium.” It has almost 3,000 marine species, including over 900 species of fish and a third of the world's marine mammals. So far, there isn’t a better time than the present to showcase Cousteau’s astute observation.

Many anglers are drawn by the behemoth billfish and yellowfin tuna that frequent the waters surrounding Baja’s tip nearly year-round and this year they won’t be disappointed; the yellowfin tuna, sometimes nicknamed “cows” because of their remarkable weight exceeding 200 pounds, are being caught on a regular basis.

And equally good news for the anglers looking for billfish is the quantity being hooked, as some fleet boats return with numerous red triangular flags flapping from the outriggers signifying double-digit scores of striped marlin having been released.

Adding to the excitement are the many other exotics that are also in the neighborhood now. After a long-time absence, schools of dorado are being found not only beneath almost anything floating but also in the open water trolling. One tip to remember is when there is a bite, reel that fish to the boat but don’t remove it from the water for a few minutes as often others in the school will follow the first dorado to the boat. Usually most of the larger yellowfin tuna are caught with specialized techniques such as dangling either lures or live bait from a kite. Smaller yellows will bite the same lures as the dorado and striped marlin.

Inside, closer to shore, where the sprawling hotels that dot “Land’s End” are clearly visible, there are several different species to be caught. The bizarre-looking roosterfish with alternating dark gray and white stripes along their body, topped with an unusual dorsal fin resembling a rooster’s comb, are always a popular target. Regardless of their looks, they are tough customers that force the angler to pull hard to bring them to the side of the boat before releasing them. They are oily red flesh and not good to eat. Usually in the same area are other great fighting fish, “jack crevalle” which are also a ‘release’ candidate.

The sierra mackerel with their sharp teeth are difficult to catch but are at the top of many visitor’s favorite eating list. They are great in ceviche or grilled and most restaurants in town will be happy to prepare them for you and your group.

Another close-to-shore option is bottom fishing around some of the underwater pinnacles (think ‘underwater mountains’). Grouper and red snapper along with amberjack and yellowtail, are likely candidates and are tasty prospects. They are usually fished on the bottom with heavy sinkers and live/dead bait or lures. Expect a battle if you hook one as they have earned the reputation of being tough adversaries that don’t give up easily.

Up farther into the Sea of Cortez, most of the larger yellowfin (the cows) are being caught on the Gordo Banks. Anglers confirm there are many more bites than fish landed which is understandable considering their huge size.

At the East Cape, outside of La Ribera Marina, there are also smaller yellowfin, dorado and ample striped marlin. Of course, this high up into the Sea you can expect some intermittent north winds which can either prevent boats from going out or shorten the fishing day.

Then at Muertos Bay, outside of La Paz, there is Isla Cerralvo. The fishing here is not unlike East Cape with north winds always being a consideration. Basically, here it’s scratchy mixed-bag type of fishing. Inshore, there’s snapper, bonito, pargo, seabass and good schools of jack crevalle.

There should be more sierra around, but so far, they haven’t been consistent. The best quality found in the area has been some firecracker 10-pound yellowtail and some surprising 20-pound class tuna in Muertos Bay, plus a few free- swimming wahoo that have been spotted.

All in all, the year has begun with nice cool 80-degree weather, along with clear skies and an extraordinary variety of fish to chase! i

Spring time is upon us, a time for adventure and enjoying the outdoors. This time of year Cabo is buzzing with happy energy everywhere you go. So this vacation, run through these recommendations and have fun outside discovering as many of these different facets of iconic Cabo.

Well, without doubt you have to check out the famous arch at Land’s End in Cabo San Lucas and go back home with your own pictures and videos of this beautiful land formation that represents us worldwide. Do it in the way that attracts you most, there are many choices to choose from to embark in this adventure. For example, renting a jet ski at Medano bay, or booking a boat trip that cruises past the arch and onto the Pacific side to observe the whales or towards the Sea of Cortez for some snorkeling at one of the beautiful bays. If you love sea kayaking, or want to try it out for the first time, rent a kayak at Medano bay or hire an adventure operator for a guided tour to the amazing arch. Banana boats, flyboards, jet packs, flybikes, and more, are available along Medano Beach.

One of the most popular natural tourist draws in the Baja is the high number of whales which migrate here each year. These spectacular animals can be seen spouting and breaching from the beach or hotel rooms, but whale-watching boat tours offer a real up-close experience.

An even grander experience can be found just north in the city of La Paz. Here, guests can charter a tour for the chance to snorkel among migrating whale sharks – gentle, plankton-eating giants which are the world’s largest known species of fish. Cabo San Lucas also has a variety of booze cruises from which to select, ranging from just going out for a tour with open bar to having, lunch, breakfast and other activities like snorkeling, sunset tours and pirate shows.

While at Medano bay, I would recommend you have some lunch at one of the many delicious beachfront restaurants. This is a very popular thing to do in Cabo, and like checking out the arch, it's a must do. This is also a must do activity if you want to be in the middle of the beach action Cabo style. There is a lot to see and observe on the crowded beach to later tell funny and entertaining stories to your friends. Of course, if your here for a more relaxing vacation, this might not be for you! In which case, you can reserve a table for dinner at one of the breathtaking ocean view or beachfront palapa-terrace restaurants all throughout Cabo’s prestigious hotels.

Speaking of food, downtown San Jose del Cabo and the Cabo San Lucas strip and marina are also wonderful for outdoor dining. One great option is Thursday nights in San Jose when the very popular Art Walk takes place. The scene is magical and enchanting. Imagine having a great dish with your loved ones from one of the second story balconies in this charming art district.

Still speaking of food! If on this vacation you plan to do some cooking yourself, get some of your ingredients at the municipal market in San Jose de Cabo. There are many regional fresh items to choose from. The other great places to buy delicious food to prepare is at the numerous organic markets that take place throughout the week days all over Los Cabos and one of my favorite ones is the famous Mercado Organico of San Jose del Cabo which just celebrated its 15th anniversary and sets up every Saturday from November to May. Also countless organic delicatessens are sprouted throughout Cabo and there you can find the coolest healthy stuff, and not just food from the local farms, but soaps and other natural beauty products made locally as well.

Now that we are talking about shopping, another great activity is to do some outdoor shopping or just window shopping at the streets in San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo or Todos Santos. You will find the most amazing Mexican crafts and clothes, but not just that, there is art presented all over, which makes walking the streets very entertaining. Sometimes when I'm walking around Cabo I feel like I am in a magical theme park with all the people enjoying themselves, both locals and visitors doing their thing.

It is a wonderful vibe!

OUT & ABOUT Talking about good vibes, surfing is amazing all over Cabo. You can find waves all year. If you’ve never done it, this is the place to learn. Amazing instructors will get you up and surfing in your first lesson. The best places for lessons are the beaches in Costa Azul, such as Acapulquito and Pescaditos, and on the Pacific side, Cerritos beach is the place to go. For experienced surfers, there are numerous breaks all around. Cruise over to page 18 to find a great list.

So you’ve been all day in the sun, why not get a massage right on the beach under a palapa right after sipping your refreshing drink or beer. Now, after a day of surfing and relaxing you are ready for some nightlife. The Cabo San Lucas downtown party strip is very fun to do some bar hopping and the coolest thing is that you can stay outdoors throughout the night if you wish.

Most restaurants, bars and clubs have terraces and patios under the sky and the music is great all around. What a great vacation dancing under the stars!

After all the dancing, your feet will be in need of some soothing. You could opt for putting your feet in the sand all morning, or get really adventurous and explore the healing hot springs in Santa Rita ranch in Santiago town. Either book a trip with an outfitter or rent a car and discover them yourselves by asking any local in Santiago how to get there. There, you can sink your feet in the soothing hot thermal waters and also jump in the cold waters of the stream that runs beside. It is perfect for revitalizing after that crazy and fun night out.

Well, so far if you have checked out the arch, seen some whales, snorkeled a bit, caught a wave, dined outside, got a massage, basked in hot springs, danced a lot, and bought some gifts for others and some souvenirs for yourself, your vacation is going great! But if you still have some days left, here are some recommendations to keep the vibe outside: On a windy day, how about doing some sailing or on really calm day some scuba diving would be perfect. Scuba diving excursions are a popular draw in Los Cabos. Need to get certified? You can do that, too! Several local companies offer PADI certification courses designed for visitors who are short on time. Guests can often receive a limited certification and be diving in as little as two days.

When it’s overcast, hiking or mountain biking might be the option to get out of the hotel room. On a really sunny day with blue skies, spending all day at the beach playing games with family and friends would be unforgettable.

Anything from bocce ball, to throwing a frisbee or playing volleyball and making sand castles. Spending the day at the beach with your loved ones and beach set up is what Cabo is all about. Very basic but so much fun, just an umbrella, a cooler with great snacks and drinks, some beach toys and a towel is pretty much all you need.

The Baja has a diverse ecosystem and a beauty unique to the area. One example is in the San José estuary, an approximately 125-acre protected region where dozens of species of birds, lizards, and plants can be spotted. You can explore the estuary by foot, horseback, or even by kayak. Horseback and camel safaris are also available at adventure parks, offering knowledgeable guides and memorable experiences. If you still have some energy and time, try one of the local companies that offer amazing activities like zip lining, bungee jumping, waterfall tours and many other kinds of exhilarating adventures. If you're looking for something fast-paced, try an all-terrain vehicle excursion such as four-wheelers, Rhinos, or Xrail buggies. That is what is so great about Cabo. That every day that you leave the doors of your room an endless spectrum of choices to spend a wonderful time enjoying the outdoors is at your reach. Of course, not to forget, one of the things you can’t leave Cabo without doing is going for an old time basic swim in the shoreline. Even for a quick dip, getting bathed in some vitalizing ocean water while receiving the sun rays is so good for the body, soul and mind. You can’t go back home without getting in the ocean’s waters.

Casa Hogar is a privately run charitable organization for Los Cabos kids who are unable to stay in their current living situations. Casa Hogar strives to provide a safe and happy home for adolescent boys and girls by offering a comfortable environment with access to education, physical and emotional care. They receive no government assistance and rely entirely on private donations and funding. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend volunteering or donating to Casa Hogar. the Huichol people, set in the Wirikuta Gardens in San Jose del Cabo. Last month I had a chance to experience this magical journey for myself. Upon arriving and receiving our color-coded wristbands, we were greeted by a performer who explained the mesmerizing evening we were about to enjoy. From there we had our faces traditionally painted, listened to drummers around a campfire, took photos with the cast and entered the Huichol market where we found jewelry, pottery, figurines and clothing, all available for purchase.

There are several options to choose from based on your budget, starting with the ‘Show Only’ option at only $70usd per person. If you would like to come early to enjoy dinner and drinks, you can purchase the ‘Dinner and Show’ package for $135usd per person. This option includes a delicious buffet style Mexican dinner including mole, tamales, chile rellanos, pastor tacos, quesadillas, churros, flan, and more and a 1-hour open bar during dinner. Everything we tried was wonderful and had us wanting to go back for more. For those who want to splurge, there is a ‘VIP Dinner & Show’ option including everything above plus roundtrip transportation, 3.5 hours of open bar and premium front row seating.

After dinner, we found a seat amid the Wirikuta pyramids and the show began. It was difficult not to miss anything with so many eye-catching sights including fire dancers, acrobats, dramatic lighting, and cultural and contemporary dancers in elaborate colorful costumes weaving throughout the stadium. But perhaps our favorite part of the night was as we were leaving the show and had a chance to interact with the performers up close and personal; clapping, singing and dancing freely without any choreography. EAT METATE – Open just four months ago, Metate is the newest restaurant in Cabo that everyone

is raving about. I fell in love with the place immediately upon entering. The space is intimate and well thought out, and the ambiance is romantic and inviting with colorful Mexican accents and black and white films displayed on a large wood pallet screen. I had the opportunity to take a tour with head chef Abraham Tamez and learn a little bit more about the concept behind Metate. “Metate is the dream of my grandmother and I, a Mexican restaurant with a little farm in the back, where you can get herbs and fresh products for the kitchen and bar,” explains Tamez.

Metate takes pride in everything they make, as was evident after watching Chef Tamez circulate the restaurant graciously interacting with his satisfied guests. He describes his menu as “100% Mexican food with touches of different parts of the world like our Chimichurri with grasshoppers.” Some of Metate’s most popular dishes include La Catrina (grilled bone marrow topped with beef cheek in mole verde) and Tlayuda (corn tortilla with black beans, Oaxaca cheese and herbs from the farm). They also make delicious handcrafted cocktails (the margaritas were out of this world) and meats cooked in large pits right on the property. Located on Modelorama road in El Tezal. The body...what a great divine invention! A vehicle of light, a cosmic vessel, a starship.

A magnetic electro-conductor, a smart organism, alive and completely organic. Little we understand about our own bodies, its chemistry, its biology, its neuroscience, its emotional intelligence, its resonance and its musical qualities. Little, I say, because as much as comprehension on the body/mind/soul karma and connection has evolved from the dark ages, the manifestation of our collective consciousness still shows a world of proof that the more we know, the less we understand...or as the famous cultural influencer and greatest wise philosopher Socrates said, “The only true wisdom is in knowing I know nothing.” He loved to dance.

Inside the world of Fine Arts, las Bellas Artes, dance is considered one of the most beautiful body/mind/soul practices. Its study of the body consciousness makes a vast ancestral discipline, in which movement, sensations, breathe and intuition, play the most important roles in manifesting one of the oldest and most universal languages...the language of the soul.

Through discovering its code, we can upgrade our consciousness, to such a degree that even the most tormented mind, if only for a precious moment, can find some peace; or on the other hand, dance can also make the observer lose their mind, and give the dancer total control of it. As a fun clear example of this, observe your mind when you think Nureyev, Anna Pavlova, and Isadora Duncan, then contrast to Madonna, Shakira, Britney or Beyoncé, or your favorite table dancer. Better yet, observe what happens around you next time you decide to really, really, truly dance. As in everything else, it is a matter of consciousness.

Simply put, dance is power. By quieting the mind, it gives you happiness.

Fascinated by the power of dance, Destino focused its attention closer to the world of dance by interviewing arts impresario and dance activist CHRISTINA LYON, who in 2013, founded Gala de Danza in Los Cabos. What follows is the interview she kindly gave to our Destino readers: Who are you?

I am Christina Lyon, GDD Founder and Artistic Director, former dancer with American Ballet Theatre, and guest artist with English National Ballet in London among others. Currently an international talent scouter, dance activist and arts impresario.

What is your intention?

To have not the biggest Gala in the world, simply the best.

What is the story behind Gala de Danza?

In 2013, I started Gala de Danza on behalf of

a beautiful young dancer by the name of Mariana Carrillo. I had been coming to Los Cabos and inquired if there were any local ballet schools in the area. It led me to Danza Téllez and its director the otherworldly Lourdes Téllez. To me, this woman is the Mother Theresa of México. It was Lulu's dedication that inspired me to create Gala de Danza.

What inspired you to make Los Cabos your forum?

I always say that I did not choose Los Cabos, Los Cabos chose me! I was amazed by the level of talent at the school, and the students hunger, desire and passion for dance. One of the things that struck me the most was that none of them had ever seen live performing arts. They had watched videos but nothing live. I scouted Mariana and invited her to train exclusively with me in California. Mariana has performed with Gala de Danza since the first year and has gone on to receive a scholarship to the University of Southern California where she is studying dance under the direction of Jodie Gates and world-renowned choreographer William Forsythe.

What have you learned about Los Cabos, through the experience with Gala de Danza?

Los Cabos is a true paradise. The local community is warm, friendly and has always supported us. I found a niche in the market and our Gala has grown to become one of the best Galas in the world.

What is your calendar of performances for 2018?

We start Thursday, March 15th with “Harp and Horchata,” special preview performances, the cast of GDD 2018, among them William Close and the Earth Harp, sensational youth talents from around the world, and students from USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance with Cabo ́s own Mariana Carrillo.

What is the vision of Gala de Danza in 5 years?

To continue to foster talent, to give the platform to emerging artists to share the stage with renowned stars, to continue collaborations with dancers, musicians, choreographers and have a one-week long music and dance festival.

What is your recipe for happiness?

Dance!

San José del Cabo’s Artwalk in the Gallery District

Each Thursday evening from November through June, the streets of historic San José del Cabo’s vibrant Gallery District come alive with color and creativity.

Hidden behind the church off of Plaza Mijares (the main square) Calle Obregon is closed to traffic from 5 to 9 p.m. for Artwalk. Visit the galleries and enjoy a glass of complementary wine or spirits while taking in the warm and inviting atmosphere. Safe for families, it’s a chance to meet artists, attend new exhibits and experience a very special side of Los Cabos. The Gallery District also boasts some of Los Cabos' best restaurants. Consider arriving early and staying for dinner.

Artwalk was created by the Gallery District Association to attract art lovers and tourists to the area. Its members are recognizable by a distinctive circular plaque posted on each gallery. Exhibiting genres from paintings and sculpture to ceramics and folk art, it’s easy to fall in love with a favorite piece.

The Gallery District is compact and easy to walk. From Plaza Mijares, cross the street to the church and turn right. You’ll first find La Sacristia with art, sculptures, fine pottery and ceramics. Established Mexican contemporary artists are at the Patricia Mendoza Gallery on the corner of Calle Hidalgo and Obregon.

Further on to the left, view contemporary art and sculpture from Spain’s Basque artist Enrique Bascón. A few doors away, Corsica’s museum quality fine art and sculptures are from renowned Mexican Masters and upcoming talents.

Desértica’s eclectic contemporary art and collectibles and Mata Ortiz’s exquisite Paquime pottery from Chihuahua State are next, bringing you to Calle Morelos.

Turn left for some of Baja’s top contemporary and abstract art at Leah Porter’s Casa Dahlia (open by appointment only), a few doors up. Back on Obregon at the corner of Morelos there's charming El Armario for Mexican folk art, handicrafts and paintings. Continuing up Obregon is Caravane, a modern interior design center and gallery with a broad range of beautiful objects. Ivan Guaderrama’s gallery of contemporary Christian paintings and sculptures is up the street.

Nearby, the Old Town Gallery’s seasoned artists capture the color, culture and light of Baja California Sur with paintings in realistic genres. At the corner of Calle Guerrero, turn left and walk up to Ida Victoria Gustafson’s striking twostory gallery with a colorful, eclectic collection of original art and sculpture from well known North American and Mexican artists. Don't miss the internationally known abstract painter and sculptor, Frank Arnold, whose eye-catching gallery is on Calle Comonfort, facing Calle Centenario. At the foot of Morelos, stop in at Plaza Paulina for Julian Garcia’s Arte gallery with paintings and distinctive sculptures in bronze, steel and stone.

If you’re driving, park close to Morelos on Calle Centenario, the boulevard that runs behind the Gallery District. For easiest access, park close to Morelos Street and walk in from there. You’ll immediately be drawn into a charming and festive atmosphere. If you miss out on Artwalk, plan to visit the Art District another day. Describe the music scene in Los Cabos.

Los Cabos is a tourist destination so you can find many excellent musicians and artists. There is a great music scene already, but we need even more locations to enjoy the diversity of musical talent here. At Mixology, we bring in many artists from outside Los Cabos to learn from different cultures and broaden our musical horizons.

How do you think the music scene has evolved over time?

Over the 10 years I’ve been living in Cabo, the music scene has evolved a lot. This shows in the fact that we now have international talents playing at places like Mixology Fusion Bar, Blue Marlin Ibiza at ME Cabo, Breathless, El Ganzo and the Thompson Hotel.

I feel grateful that this beautiful city received me with arms wide open.

Why do you think so many artists are drawn to Los Cabos?

It’s a beautiful place with unique landscapes, unexplored beaches, great food, and excellent resorts. Los Cabos also has all the heart and flavors typical of Mexico.

What emotion are you feeling right now? Why? I’m very happy, especially at this moment. I feel grateful that this beautiful city received me with arms wide open. I'm happy to be a part of the growth occurring in Los Cabos, to have good friends with whom I can share my life, and to have pure air to breathe every day. I love this place.

What are you most looking forward to in 2018?

Working with my team at Mixology Fusion Bar to further develop the underground house music scene, and putting Los Cabos on the map as an internationally recognized music destination.
