Los Cabos

(the capes) is located in the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the Capital of the state. If you take a look at the Baja Sur map you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful and the winds are stronger. If you go further north along the Pacific side the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months. The mountains meet the desert and the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pineoak forests. The main climate of the region is arid to semi-arid; however, there are farming areas where the soil is wet, especially on the Pacific side of the Peninsula.

"The aquarium of the world"

is how Jacques Cousteau described the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this "trap" and either stayed in the warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. Ready to explore? 10

destinations Cabo San Lucas

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach, the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

San José del Cabo

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

The Corridor

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, Nationally Protected coral reef that offers outstanding snorkeling and scuba diving. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and those who just want to get away from it all.

La Paz

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist-highwater at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

Loreto

Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

useful information ATMs The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the street will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate.

CASH OR CARD?

Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only places. Always ask beforehand and carry cash. Your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

GROCERIES In Cabo San Lucas, Walmart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Walmart, Mega or Soriana. If you need a quick grab, OXXO stores are reasonably priced convenient stores located all over town.

DRIVING

Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway. The cost varies from $63.00 to $75.00 pesos, depending on your destination. ALTO STOP

BOATING & FISHING

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day.

THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos Located in La Playita just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in the area with 200 available slips 12

for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels.

FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

Prepare yourself for an incredible show of nature as you swim side by side with colorful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, sea turtles and more. The Sea of Cortez or the “Aquarium of the World” offers many opportunities to experience incredible underwater wildlife.

SNORKELING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkeling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock.

Lover’s Beach This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, ropedoff area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkeling in the area. This eightfingered coral reef is about a 1.5hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

Buggy, ATV, Or Bike Rentals There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid drivers’ license. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike, beach cruiser, or joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Just make sure to wear a helmet! Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Cactus-lovers may also want to check out the cactus gardens at Wirikuta, offering a large variety of cacti laid out in an artful outdoor setting. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SOUTHERN BAJA

BAJA 101 Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, backcountry ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation.

FLYBOARDING

Parasailing If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat! Wet Fun Water Park Located about 20 minutes from San José, this water park has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms, a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps water on the bystanders below. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at km 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends. Sol de Mayo Waterfall Cascade Located about an hour and a half away from Los Cabos, the Sol de Mayo Oasis is yet another natural beauty of the Southern Baja California region. The hike leads the adventurous to a majestically beautiful oasis where everyone can swim and even dive into the cool, serene waters. Be sure to pack a lunch, and take plenty of water. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. The cost is $6 US per person to access the easy hike to the clear-water falls.

SURFING

Baja Sur has been a popular surfing destination since the ‘50s. The East Cape is popular for kite surfing and the Pacific coast has several surf breaks where you will find less crowds. See our Baja Sur map and look for this symbol to locate the surf spots mentioned below. SAN PEDRITO Level: Advanced. Direction: Right, left. Location: Pacific side right before arriving to Todos Santos. Have you ever had a dream about flying like Superman or maybe swimming like a dolphin? Dreams can come true in Cabo! The FlyBoard is a device connected and powered by a personal watercraft, which allows propulsion underwater and in the air. Users are connected to the board by wakeboard boots, under which, water pressure provides thrust. A certified trainer controls the power and height and you control all the movement. Available at Medano beach or in the Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo.

STAND UP PADDLING

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout while enjoying nature. At Medano beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.

KITE SURFING

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles.

December through February East Cape and Costa Azul are on the flatter side. The Pacific can be good this time of year because it’s exposed to the west swell. March through May This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

Lover's Beach

Getting there is an adventure in itself, since it is reachable only by boat, kayak or any other water vessel. The easiest way to get there is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Your captain will cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean (Divorce Beach). This side is very dangerous for swimming, so swim on Lover’s Beach side only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. Tips: On occasion there are a few vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services.

Medano

Imagine floating in a turquoise bay with coral colored sand, snorkeling with colorful fish or walking for hundreds of yards in waist-high water, every beach in Southern Baja offers something unique. Here is a list of the "must sea" beaches to help you decide which is the one for you or just visit them all!

If you’re looking for the action, this is where it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No gracias.” Water sports are available such as jet skis, parasailing, flyboarding, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, and more. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

Chileno

Chileno Beach is a very popular location for snorkeling and swimming due to it's calm waters. You’ll find tide pools at the left end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. Public restrooms and showers are available, as well as a handicap ramp that takes you right to the beach. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. Tips: Snorkeling visibility is often better in the mornings and you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours. Bring snorkeling gear!

BAJA 101

Santa Maria

Santa Maria is a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. However, the beach does have brand new bathrooms and palapas. Location: Travelling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.

Palmilla

Palmilla beach is known for its family friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes and the One&Only Hotel. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at Km. 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.

Cerritos

Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. You can rent a boogie board or surf board or even take a surf lesson. Location: Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Tips: Come prepared with food, drinks and beach gear. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful, so swim with caution.

Balandra

A stunning bay in La Paz (the State's Capital) that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist-high water that is crystal clear. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock.” You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra! Location: A two hour drive from Cabo San Lucas. Once you're in La Paz, follow the main drag along the boardwalk, pass Costa Baja Resort and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. ello again, I am so happy that we are in the middle of summertime and that you are here in Los Cabos vacationing during this wonderful month of August, which is one of my favorite months for many reasons. First, I was born in August and throughout my life I was usually vacationing during this month due to the summer break from school, so it was always fun times with no homework or many schedules. Now I love it because it is when we have the surf season here in Los Cabos. Of course August can also be extremely hot, so surfing is one of the perfect ways to cool off and refresh from the high temperatures. And not only that, surfing also refreshes your whole self. After surfing you feel your soul renewed in some way. So if you have never surfed before, maybe this summer in Cabo is the right time. We have great spots to learn and amazing surf schools and instructors. The Costa Azul area in Cabo is where you want to go to get some surf lessons and also renting a board. Anyone you ask can recommend you a great option, so get away from the heat by catching some waves this vacation. Another fantastic way to cool off from the hot weather is to check out the cold pools and streams in Miraflores. This little town is about 35 minutes north of the San Jose del Cabo airport and its cold pools are absolutely magical. Bring a lunch and enjoy a very different experience from the beaches of Cabo. Here within DESTINO Magazine, in the

maps section you will find it just south of Santiago town. When you arrive in Miraflores, just ask a local resident where the "pozas" are, which means pools, and they will give you directions. For me, a great way to enjoy the hot summer here in Cabo is to take a sunset stroll in downtown San Jose del Cabo. The city has just remodeled the main plaza and it turned out very nice. There are many benches to sit down and relax, as well as many different shops, restaurants and art galleries to have a very good time. Back in the water, snorkeling has got to be an all-time favorite activity to refresh from the hot sun and sand. I highly recommend you try it out this visit. We have some amazing snorkeling spots with many species of tropical colorful fish and fascinating coral formations. Some top sites are Neptune's finger in Cabo San Lucas, Santa Maria bay and Chileno reef on the Cabo corridor, and La Sirenita beach in Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park. If you are into scuba diving, that may be the ultimate way to keep cool underwater and have a fun time. Not to mention the outstanding scuba companies and unimaginable scuba sites that we have here in southern Baja. Can't forget to mention Wet Fun waterpark in CaduaĂąo town as another perfect alternative to do a great family activity this trip that goes perfect with the hot Cabo summer sun. This recreational water park is also only about 25 minutes past the

airport and has great water slides and swimming pools. There is much shade all around and a restaurant too. I have been there many times for my son's birthday and we always have a fabulous time. Any sunset boat tour in Cabo will also be the right choice to do an activity during these hot summer days. There are many options to choose from, some have great dining and drinking, and others offer wonderful night shows and themed performances. But the most amazing thing is that you go past the famous arch which is very beautiful and unforgettable. This is the perfect activity to make your vacation absolutely memorable as either the clear stargazing or the passing moon will make the short voyage even more spectacular. Furthermore, for me to handle the extremely hot days, I like eating and drinking very refreshing things. One of my favorite dishes is really cold fish ceviche. If you have never tried ceviche, you have to. It is a very traditional meal all over Latin America and here in Mexico we love it. It is basically diced fish cooked in lemon juice and then mixed with diced veggies. There are many different recipes, but any that is served to you will be most likely wonderful, as long as it served quite chilled. So imagine a big bowl of delicious ceviche and a huge mango smoothie on the side. Or of course an extremely cold beer! Last month I wrote a piece on mangos and how it is mango season right now in Cabo, and I left out a

couple delicious things that can be made from mangos. One is mango water, which is the easiest thing to make. You just have to fill a blender with mango pulp, add ice and water and blend. To make it a bit sweeter you can add bee honey. This is the perfect drink to refresh on these hot days. Another delicious meal with mango that I forgot to mention in the previous issue, is oatmeal with mango. For me this is a great surf food. I usually have it before a surf session and it is perfect for me to be able to have good energy and fuel and not feel too heavy on my stomach. I like to add some seeds, like chia seeds to the oatmeal and also some sliced bananas to get a little more power. Finally, maybe one last suggestion to cool off this summer vacation is to take a day trip to the Todos Santos area on the Pacific Ocean side. This area is known to have a micro climate which is created by the breezes of the Pacific Ocean and the high mountains of the Sierra La Laguna mountain range which for about a 30-mile distance come very close to the coast. This creates a lot of cool mist which is one of the factors why the area is great for agriculture. The climate varies but it can be 10 degrees Fahrenheit lower than Cabo regularly. Check out Pescadero town and Cerritos beach when visiting this area too. Cerritos is a wonderful beach and is also one of the great spots to learn how to surf here in Baja Sur. Surf's up! Cool down!

From Land's End to La Paz M O N T H LY F I S H I N G R E P O R T by Gar y Graham It was early July and there had already been sixth named storms! Along with some rain which is always welcomed in moderation. And although there has been little impact thus far, the accompanying winds have stirred up the seas surrounding the tip, causing off-color conditions and lower-than-normal sea temps that create some challenges. The larger blue and black marlin have yet to appear in any quantity. However, the striped marlin that usually seem less prevalent are still around in impressive numbers. They’ve been joined by their “cousins,” the alwaysentertaining sailfish, and even a few swordfish which are seldom seen in any quantity. The smaller yellowfin tuna, sometime referred to as “footballs”, have dominated recent catches but the larger variety reaching several hundred pounds or more, are a rarity. Since they are always considered a prize catch, local anglers are expecting, or hoping, they will arrive in greater numbers soon. Bait supplies of caballito, mullet and some sardina are available in most areas. Up on the Gordo Banks off Puerto Los Cabos, there has been sporadic bait fish schooling. Some days there are plenty to be found, and some days not as many. Anglers using yo-yo jigs have found fishing for red snapper (huachinango) from good to excellent. Only a few smaller-sized dorado have been seen recently. The yellowfin tuna action was found from 15- to 30-miles offshore and was associated with fast- traveling porpoise. However, the spotty action has dictated searching for tuna averaging from 12- to 18-pounds. In the East Cape area, summer is in full swing with lots of good-sized yellowfin, a consistent billfish bite, big roosters, some big wahoo, improved dorado fishing and unbelievable bottom fishing for big pargo and amberjack. Lots of caballito and plentiful big sardina are available here daily. Here, there are also lots of sails mixed with stripers along with a few blues and black marlin beginning to arrive. You’ll find them off La Ribera, spread over a wide area. Many nice yellowfin from 20- to 50-pounds are being caught close inside from the lighthouse south; most are being taken within a 1/2 mile of the beach on live sardina and caballito. The tuna are also outside under the porpoise taking Hoochies and cedar plugs. Additionally, some big bruisers to 85 pounds are being caught north off Punta Pescadero. Plus a few of the 40- to 65-pound wahoo are being caught on local private and hotel boats. The dorado bite is improving with some nice bulls and many smaller dorado.

All anglers who are targeting roosterfish released at least one over 40 pounds daily. They were chasing feeding fish off the lighthouse and most local beaches. Bottom fishing is producing large pargo to 30 pounds mixed with amberjack to 55 pounds! Almost all anglers fishing the bottom are scoring both species. So far, Cerralvo Island has produced the most consistent catches of largersized yellowfin. Back nearer the launch area at Muertos Bay and around on the Los Arenas beaches, the roosterfish action has continued to be epic with 50+ pounders being caught frequently. Around La Paz, the fish are schoolsized dorado. In the rocks, there are lots of snapper, big pargo and cabrilla and even some holdover, cooler-water yellowtail. Loads of fish are lost in the rocks, but you could easily have 10 to 30 biters a day and even if you lost most of them, you still would have an ice chest full of at least a dozen different species of fish. Up at Loreto, the larger dorado around some of the outer islands have created quite a buzz with some of the fish in the 35- to 50-pound class being landed. Another prized catch has been some of the larger amberjack caught around the rocky outcroppings along the shore of the Sea of Cortez and islands. Regardless of what you are targeting, summer is one of our most exciting times to try your hand at fishing. Plus, during the hot summer, the breezes on the water offer a great way to cool off.

Clean up Dive

by Katia Silva Marine Biologist and Guide at Cabo Trek Marine debris includes any anthropogenic, manufactured, or processed solid material (regardless of size) discarded, disposed of, or abandoned that ends up in the marine environment, and in some instances may also be a vessel for dangerous pollutants that are eventually released into the marine environment. Marine litter may result from activities on land or at sea. Marine litter is a complex cultural and multi-sectoral problem that exacts tremendous ecological, economic, and social costs around the globe. Over 80% of marine pollution comes from land-based activities. From plastic bags to pesticides - most of the waste we produce on land eventually reaches the oceans, either through deliberate dumping or from run-off through drains and rivers. Marine debris or marine litter has long been a problem and threat to marine life. Marine mammals, seabirds and fish die each year from being entangled in or ingesting marine litter. Every year 6.4 million tons of plastic, with all the toxins they contain, pose a threat to sea life and ecosystems. Pieces smaller than 5mm in size are called microplastic. Sources for microplastics in the ocean include cosmetic products, textiles such as fleece jackets, and rubbish washed from land and ships that dump their plastic waste in the ocean (even though it is prohibited). The fishing industry accounts for 10% of marine debris. Nets and fishing gear get lost or are thrown away into the ocean. These "ghost nets" continue trapping fish for many decades. Working together supporting local initiatives such as Zero Waste Los Cabos, Cabo Trek is collaborating with underwater clean ups in Cabo San Lucas. Most of the trash collected until now by divers is plastic. Marine debris is, therefore, part of a broader problem of solid waste management, which affects all coastal and upland communities including inland waterways and is closely linked to the protection and conservation of the marine and coastal environment and sustainable development. A lack of capacity and funding to effectively manage solid waste is common, particularly in developing countries, and contributes to the problem of marine debris. However, pollution is a problem that can no longer be left for future generations to solve. We need to take action now to find and implement solutions. Everyone can do your part and collaborate with simple attitudes to rethink, reduce, reuse, recycle and refuse unnecessary material especially plastic. Another way is to support organizations, companies and brands with environmental responsibility in environmental conservation.

A 1.5-hour drive from Los Cabos, the ideal day trip is a visit to Cañon de la Zorra. It’s a bit of a drive, but after a day of hiking in a protected biosphere and soaking in pools near the base of a waterfall, you’ll realize it’s well worth the effort.

The Rancho Ecologico Sol de Mayo is an isolated place nestled at the base of the canyon. Park your car and say hello to Don Prisciliano and Celeste, the couple whose family has owned the ranch for five generations. For $5 you can access the trail, which takes you up a moderate hike into the canyon. Exploring this unique biosphere, you'll find pools to soak in, waterfalls, a plethora of wildlife, and plant and animal species endemic to the region. It’s a perfect place to bring lunch, relax for the afternoon, and still make it back to Los Cabos by nightfall.

On my last visit to the canyon, my wife and I arrived late afternoon and headed straight for the trail. We hiked past the large waterfall, then trekked up the steep mountainside, intent on working up a sweat after hours in the car. We explored the picturesque foothills, took photos, and then dipped into the pools to cool off. On our way down we climbed a large rock staircase to the base of a pristine waterfall and spent sunset swimming alone.

To get to Cañon de la Zorra, head north from Los Cabos toward the Sierra de la Lagunas and watch as the landscape begins to change. Past the Tropic of Cancer Monument the desert recedes and green trees, cactus and shrubbery overtake the land. Nearing the old colonial town of Santiago, rolling

That night we were the only guests staying at the ranch. Evening in the mountain cabin was quiet and serene. After dinner, we sat upon the roof, and then watched as the stars came out. We left the following morning in a state of Zen, confident that we would return again soon.

iving gives you the opportunity to experience an entirely different world under water. Through diving, whether with scuba gear or not, you are able to interact with marine life and the extraordinary environment they live in. These underwater wonders vary from place to place and are astonishing in their own sense. But in Cabo Pulmo, the underwater world is like no other, flourishing beyond belief with hundreds of sharks, manta rays, endless bodies of fish and the most breathtaking coral reef. Cabo Pulmo is world-renowned for its beauty and biodiverse marine ecosystems and additionally has the only coral reef in the area. Thousands of conscious divers travel there and are instantly humbled by their experience in being in presence of this magnificent underwater world. Although, it is now known for its biological importance, Cabo Pulmo was once on the periphery of vanishing. At one point, threats from over fishing, unsustainable tourism, and mega developments caused damage to this place. Due to the peril of losing the 30

beauty of their home, local residents became vigilant about the risks posing a threat to the health of the coastal waters and reef ecosystem. From this environmental conscious movement, Amigos para la Conservacion de Cabo Pulmo, A.C. (ACCP) was born. ACCP is a small but dynamic organization committed to the conservation of their little corner of the planet. Their vision is focused on continuing to make Cabo Pulmo a sanctuary for its marine and terrestrial life. Their work is based on the importance of involving their community in the conservation efforts to protect the place they call home. Through their efforts they have successfully revived the reef of Cabo Pulmo, which is especially important as this reef is the oldest in the American Pacific and the largest in the Gulf of California, therefore a priority for conservation. In addition to their coral reef restoration, they are the only group in the area also committed to monitoring the quality of coastal waters within and surrounding the Cabo Pulmo National Park – essentially important

when one is recreational diving. Except for ACCP, no other entity has taken on the task of promoting the conservation of their community. Their notable success is due to their commitment to enforce and protect this space. However, challenges are ongoing, as tourism in the region grows and puts new pressures on the reefs and the marine populations, which if not addressed, could seriously impact the progress made. Underwater diving opens one up to life below the water, but without local organizations such as Amigos para la Conservacion de Cabo Pulmo there would be no life below water to explore. PM: I felt it was important to preserve the underwater beauty of the coral reefs and protect the sea life. JB: What is your favorite thing about diving? PM: The freedom you feel underwater and the ability to observe everything that happens under the sea. JB: What's the most exciting fish you've ever seen? PM: An Oar Fish. It looks just like a giant snake. JB: How do you spend an average day? PM: Taking care of my garden, walking on the beach and doing small projects around my house.

PEPE MURRIETA My name is JOSE LUIS MURRIETA ROSAS, but everyone calls me "PEPE." I was born in Xalapa, Veracruz, and went to school at the Panamericana de Hoteleria in Mexico City. After finishing school, I ended up in Cabo in 1984 and then received my PADI Scuba Instructor Certification in Chicago in 1989. STARS & STRIPES TOURNAMENT – The 22nd Annual Stars & Stripes Fishing and Golf Tournament took place June 28 to July 1. The tournament was originally created to honor the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County, but now has expanded to include seven children's charities based in Southern California and Mexico. In addition to scheduled tournament festivities, organizers brought down a team of medical professionals to perform 48 surgeries for local children and adults in need. I had the opportunity to attend the Friday night cocktail reception, silent auction, country themed dinner and concert on the beach featuring The Downtown Band at the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort and was very impressed with all the remarkable things they are able to achieve each year! To date, the tournament has raised more than $30 million for youth charities over the course of its 21-year history including over $3.6 million this year alone! @starsandstripestournament

LADERAS SAN JOSÉ COCKTAIL EVENT – Ladera San José is a new residential housing project located in Cerro Colorado in San José del Cabo (behind the Koral Center). BISBEE’S EAST CAPE OFFSHORE TOURNAMENT

The Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore Fishing Tournament returns on Wednesday August 1 through Friday August 3 outside Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort in Los Barriles. The

shotgun start happens at 7:00am each day and fishing lines must be out of the water by 4:00pm. The weigh station viewing area is open daily on the beach in front of Hotel Buena Vista. Registration begins on Tuesday, July 31, with the distribution of team bags, a Captain’s meeting, and kick-off cocktail party. The tournament concludes with an awards ceremony from 7:00pm to 9:00pm on Saturday, August 4. July 31 is also the last day to enter the tournament. This year the Bisbee family is sadly mourning the loss of Bob Bisbee, who passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 14th in Dallas, Texas. A statement from the Bisbee family explains "Bob was born on March 6, 1933 in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. He moved to California in 1958 where he met and married his wife of 58 years, Aina, in 1960. Orange County was his home for the following decades where much of this time he could always be found at his fuel dock and tackle store on Balboa Island in Newport Harbor. In the mid-60s, this SoCal fishing and boating connection led him to many personal and business ventures in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, which became his favorite place on earth. It is also where he created and maintained the majority of his life-long and numerous friendships.
