Our November issues are usually focused on “Cultural Cabo” because Mexico undeniably has a rich culture, and so does Los Cabos, and during this month we get to celebrate that culture localy with the reopening of the Art Walk in the San Jose Art Gallery District, with the Day of the Dead, and with the Los Cabos Film Festival. In this issue we included an article about the history of Southern Baja and San Jose del Cabo. Read along to learn about San Jose’s past and present (including some pirate stories). In the past few years, the Day of the Dead imagery has seemed to gain popularity in pop-culture, and it feels like you now see catrinas (the dressed-up female skeletons) and calaveritas (the decorated sugar skulls) “everywhere.” With this Mexican tradition spreading wide, I believe it’s important to understand the true meaning of this tradition, therefore more will be understood about the beautiful Mexican culture. Read more about this holiday on page 28 and don’t miss the annual altar contest in San Jose’s main plaza. Los Cabos (or “the capes” in Spanish) is located on the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the State Capital. If you take a look at our Baja Sur map, you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful and the winds are stronger. If you go further north along the Pacific side the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez side. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months. The mountains meet the desert and the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pineoak forests. The main climate of the region is arid to semi-arid; however, there are farming areas where the soil is wet, especially on the Pacific side of the Peninsula.

“The aquarium of the world”

is how Jacques Cousteau described the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this "trap" and either stayed in the warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. Ready to explore?

destinations Cabo San Lucas

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo Arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach (the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area), an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

San José del Cabo

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

The Corridor

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this highway you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, and championship golf courses. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, Nationally Protected coral reef that offers outstanding snorkeling and scuba diving. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and those who just want to get away from it all.

La Paz

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waisthighwater at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

Loreto

Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, Banregio, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the streets or marina will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

Dollars are accepted almost everywhere but you will usually get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate posted.

CASH OR CARD?

Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only establishments. Always ask beforehand and carry cash just in case. Keep in mind your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

GROCERIES

In Cabo San Lucas, Walmart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Walmart, La Comer, Chedraui Selecto or Soriana. Mercado Santa Carmelo or California Ranch Market are good options for specialty foods and dietary restrictions. If you need a quick grab, OXXO stores are reasonably priced convenience stores located all over town.

DRIVING

Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway. The cost varies from $63.00 to $75.00 pesos, depending on your destination. ALTO STOP

THINGS TO DO BOATING & FISHING

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa Maria Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are many charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day.

THE MARINAS

Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos Located in La Playa just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in the area with 200 available slips for

boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels.

FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

Prepare yourself for an incredible show of nature as you swim side by side with colorful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, sea turtles and more. The Sea of Cortez or the “Aquarium of the World” offers many opportunities to experience incredible underwater wildlife.

SNORKELING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkeling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock

A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock.

Lover’s Beach This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, ropedoff area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkeling in the area. This eightfingered coral reef is about a 1.5hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

Buggy, ATV, or Jet Ski Rentals There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid Driver’s License. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike, beach cruiser, or joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Just make sure to wear a helmet! Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Cactus-lovers may also want to check out the cactus gardens at Wirikuta, offering a large variety of cacti laid out in an artful outdoor setting. BAJA 101 Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, backcountry ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation.

FLYBOARDING

Parasailing If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat! Wet Fun Water Park Located about 20 minutes from San José, this water park has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms, a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps water on the bystanders below. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at KM 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends. Sol de Mayo Waterfall Cascade Located about an hour and a half away from Los Cabos, the Sol de Mayo Oasis is yet another natural beauty of the Southern Baja California region. The hike leads the adventurous to a majestically beautiful oasis where everyone can swim and even dive into the cool, serene waters. Be sure to pack a lunch, and take plenty of water. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. The cost is $6 US per person to access the easy hike to the clear-water falls.

SURFING

Baja Sur has been a popular surfing destination since the ‘50s. The East Cape is popular for kite surfing and the Pacific coast has several surf breaks where you will find less crowds. See our Baja Sur map to locate the surf spots mentioned below. SAN PEDRITO Level: Advanced. Direction: Right, left. Location: Pacific side right before arriving to Todos Santos. Have you ever had a dream about flying like Superman or maybe swimming like a dolphin? Dreams can come true in Cabo! The FlyBoard is a device connected and powered by a personal watercraft, which allows propulsion underwater and in the air. Users are connected to the board by wakeboard boots, under which, water pressure provides thrust. A certified trainer controls the power and height and you control all the movement. Available at Medano Beach or in the Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo.

STAND UP PADDLING

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout while enjoying nature. At Medano Beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.

KITE SURFING

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles.

March through May This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

Lovers Beach Getting there is an adventure in itself, since it is reachable only by boat, kayak or any other water vessel. The easiest way to get there is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Your captain will cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean (Divorce Beach). This side is very dangerous for swimming, so swim on Lover’s Beach side only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. Tips: On occasion there are a few vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services. Medano If you’re looking for the action, this is where it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by a lot of souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No gracias.” Water sports are available such as jet skis, parasailing, flyboarding, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and more. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there. Chileno Chileno Beach is a very popular location for snorkeling and swimming due to its calm waters. You’ll find tide pools at the left end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. Public restrooms and showers are available, as well as a handicap ramp that takes you right to the beach. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near KM 14 of the main highway. Tips: Snorkeling visibility is often better in the mornings and you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours. Bring snorkeling gear!

DISCOVER Santa Maria Santa Maria is a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkeling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. However, the beach does have brand new bathrooms and palapas. Location: Traveling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.

Palmilla Palmilla Beach is known for its family friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes and the One&Only Hotel. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at KM 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.

Cerritos Cerritos Beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. You can rent a boogie board or surf board or even take a surf lesson. Location: Exit at KM 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Tips: Come prepared with food, drinks and beach gear. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful, so swim with caution.

Balandra A stunning bay in La Paz (the State's Capital) that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist-high water that is crystal clear. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock.” You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra! Location: A two hour drive from Cabo San Lucas. Once you're in La Paz, follow the main drag along the boardwalk, pass Costa Baja Resort and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed. Humpback whales have already been on the verge of extinction because of commercial hunting. However, with the hunting ban, the population has slowly grown. This is a great history of successful conservation and whale watching tourism is part of that story. Ecotourism is part of a global trend. It is mainly to respect the whales, in the whale watching, giving space that they need. Therefore, the reproductive season (December to April) is a very important moment because it is when they copulate, breed and educate their calves during the first weeks of their lives. Through the whale watching of humpbacks it is possible to sensitize people in a unique way to the importance of the conservation of the species. If a picture is worth a thousand words, imagine how shocking it is to see these giants swimming side by side from the vessel you are on! During the tour, which lasts about 2.5 hours on average, it is possible to watch a spectacle with acrobatic behavior. It is also possible to see mothers closely with their calves, competitive groups (males

trying to mate with females) and more! Of course, every day at sea is different and everything will depend on your luck and Mother Nature. But

what is guaranteed is that it will be a unique experience in your life. Ecotourism, if practiced in a responsible way, can bring countless

benefits to the conservation of the oceans. Whale watching is estimated to generate two billion US dollars annually, with 13 million people going whale watching each year in more than 110 countries. Whale watching is a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;useâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; of whales that generates far more money than whaling. Some of the advantages of this type of tourism work are: minimum environmental impact; educational character; income for the places where the tours are made; incentive for the hotel and tourism sector; job vacancies; contribution to scientific research and awareness of the population for sustainable development. Despite the advantages, it is necessary that this type of activity is always on constant monitoring, so that there are no disturbances to the animals, bearing in mind that almost always tourism is made in places of reproduction. The whales in Mexico are protected by law. The practice of whale watching is regulated from SEMARNAT and the norms were established to prevent and curb the intentional molestation of whales in Mexican waters.*

ALL THAT'S FISHY FROM LAND'S END TO LA PAZ

While seasonal transitions are dreaded in many parts of the world, here in Baja Sur they are a welcome event. They bring big fish and more fish along with throngs of world-class anglers to take part in the extraordinary game of sportfishing. At the tip of Baja, Los Cabos is now offering an impressive selection of species. Offshore on the “Finger Bank,” 50-miles north on the Pacific side, billfish (striped, black, and blue marlin and sailfish) are so thick that double-digit releases are not uncommon. They offer a remarkable opportunity for anglers to experience the kind of billfishing that will remain etched in their memories for a lifetime. Another giant in both the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific now that fall has arrived are yellowfin tuna from football-size all the way up to cow-size beasts that can exceed 300-pounds. They also offer an extraordinary test to both experienced and amateur anglers willing to accept the challenge. Both of the above are targets of tournaments held in Cabo San Lucas that draw thousands of participants this time of year. Even if you are not interested in participating, the weighins are usually open to the public on the malecón. The excitement and spectacle are exciting and the people-watching is great. If you are looking for a little less challenge and a lot more fun, there are plenty of choices. Closer to shore, the smaller yellowfin tuna from 10- to 50pounds are dominating the catches from the tip to La Paz as what some locals are calling the best tuna bite in many years continues. East Cape, Las Arenas and La Paz are producing limits! Wahoo, a skinny fish with a mouthful of teeth, are usually an incidental catch. However, they are showing up in the

catch reports frequently. Usually caught trolling, they are one of the fastest fish in the ocean and they can reach up to 60 miles per hour. Plus, wahoo steaks are considered some of the tastiest by far. Although a few are being caught at Cabo, the likelihood improves farther up in the Sea of Cortez from San Jose all the way north to Muertos Bay inside of Isla Cerralvo. At both East Cape and Muertos Bay, huge dog-tooth snapper (cubera) and pargo up to 50-pounds are being caught in shallow water, along with big mullet snapper (pargo liso) that are normally only around when the cooler water is here in the springtime. There have also been incredible numbers of delicious big pompano and cabrilla. All these fish are excellent table fare that your hotel or favorite restaurant can prepare for you in a variety of ways. Roosterfish weighing from a few pounds up to 50 pounds are being caught and released as well close to shore. In fact, some folks prefer to chase

them on foot from the beaches in front of their hotel or from a more remote beach using a flyrod or spinning gear with lures. There are several companies that offer guided trips ... a great way to spend a morning on local beaches at either East Cape or Cabo San Lucas. While the roosters are the target for many, there are also jack crevalle, the aforementioned pargo and snapper, as well as other odds and ends of fish that can be found in shallow water along the shore. Not to be overlooked is Loreto which, even though this is considered the slow season, is producing eye-popping results for the visiting and local anglers. There are still plenty of smaller dorado with an occasional larger bull showing up. A bit farther offshore there are also yellowfin tuna along with some striped marlin, sailfish and a few blue marlin. Regardless of where you are staying in Baja Sur, now is a prime time for a variety of species that will test your sportfishing prowess as well as to catch for a fresh fish dinner or two.

On a sad note: Baja hotel pioneer Jesus "Chuy" Valdez, 75, died from an apparent heart attack September 22. The entrepreneur, along with his wife and sons, worked hard to build his vision and monument, Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort, considered by many the “Jewel of the East Cape,” with its cascade of rooms spilling down to the beach, along with a fleet of sport fishing cruisers and pangas. A fearless leader in the sportfishing community, he fought valiantly to protect the fisheries in Baja for future generations. Beloved husband to Imelda, father to Esaul, Axel and Felipe, and grandfather to many, Chuy was a legendary hotelier, fishing enthusiast, and an ardent conservationist. he flight into San José del Cabo is one of the most beautiful experiences. I love looking down and seeing the beautiful land and sea. I try to spot places like Cabo Pulmo bay on the shoreline, and also my home in San José del Cabo and other buildings too. The first time I drove past San José on the way to my destination in Cabo San Lucas, it caught my eye. It looked so peaceful, and the bright blue ocean views from the highway literally took my breathe away. I moved to San José del Cabo one month after that unforgettable day. At this moment, I live in downtown San José and I really love it, so let me list for you some fun facts about enchanting San José del Cabo. And I really hope you visit it during your vacation.

A little bit of history: The first inhabitants in the area of San José del Cabo were the Pericues from about 3,000 to 11,000 years ago, with some estimates of even 40,000 years ago.

- They had a different language than any other aboriginal people in Mexico. - Skull morphology and recent genetic studies suggest the Pericues are related to ancient populations of southern Asia, Australia, and the South Pacific Rim. - A similar skull configuration is also found at Lagoa Santa in Brazil and in the Patagonia. - They were taller and stronger than the average indigenous Mexican people. - They were divers and had complex marine technology, using wooden rafts and double paddles. - Their diet was fish, shellfish and marine mammals from the Gulf of California and also land foods like deer, small animals, wild seeds, pitaya, agave, and wild plums. - The Pericues smoked tobacco but didn't drink alcohol. - They made wooden arches, stone arrows, nets, spears, harpoons and fishhooks. - They lived in caves and rock shelters. They had fire and made stone and woven palm containers and baskets. - The men were nude and mostly painted, and the women covered their bodies with a skirts and cloaks, and both sexes had long hair.

- Violence, including homicide, went unpunished. - Some practiced monogamy, but most were polygamists. - Wives were slaves and property. - The shaman was a key part of the community. They used herbs, tobacco juice and burning coal to heal the wounded and the sick. - In 1730, Jesuit Padre Nicholas Tamaral founded the Mission in San José del Cabo as there was a need for a permanent Spanish settlement at the tip of the cape because there were many pirates in the area to capture Spanish and French galleons that were traveling from the Philippines to Acapulco. - Padre Tamaral and the Pericues had problems when he pronounced an injunction against Polygamy. And when Tamaral punished a Pericu Shaman for violating the anti-polygamy law, the Pericues rebelled and burned the San José and Santiago missions in October 1734, and Padre Tamaral was killed in the famous rebellion. - That is when San José del Cabo was founded to serve the dual purpose of protecting the people from insurgent Pericues and pirates. - By 1767, all the Pericues had died from European diseases or war with the Spanish. San José del Cabo remained an important Spanish military outpost until the mid-19th century when San José was turned over to Mexico. - There were pirates in San José del Cabo from 1578-1750 approximately. They were English and Dutch that between Cabo San Lucas bay and San José's Estuary were looking for Spanish galleons to loot. - The Manila galleons getting water in Aguada Segura and other boats getting pearls near La Paz were their main victims. - The pirates had good relationships with the Pericues and received food and gifts from them. - Famous pirate Francis Drake was known for inaugurating the "Pirates in San José del Cabo" era. - One of the most successful and famous pirates in San José del Cabo was Thomas Cavendish who was known for assaulting the Spanish galleon Santa Anna where 200 Spaniards lost their lives. He took 122,000 gold pesos, jewels, pearls, spices, wines and ship's supplies, leaving on board more than a million pesos worth of goods.

Today: - Since the 1970's, FONATUR (National Foundation for Tourism Development) has made several tourist development projects along San José del Cabo's shoreline. - San José del Cabo is the administrative head or municipality of Los Cabos County, in Baja California Sur. - Many U.S and Canadian citizens make it their second home or live and work here. - San José offers the freshest fish and seafood, but some traditional foods of the town are machaca burritos which are prepared with shredded beef, onion, tomato and chili peppers wrapped in flour tortilla, queso fresco (fresh cheese) and mango jelly made at local ranches. - The traditional beverages are Damiana Liqueur and Damiana tea. Damiana is a small local bush that has aphrodisiac and stress reliever properties. - San José del Cabo has a big celebration called

Fiestas de Marzo that span for a week because March 19th is Saint Joseph Day. On the morning of the 19th a parade is held in the streets of the Historic District. - The famous San José estuary spans a large area of the city. There are more than 100 species of birds that inhabit the estuary, plus turtles, fish and a few marine mammals. Bird watching is amazing here. - The San José del Cabo town hall is one of San José del Cabo's historical landmarks. The building has San José government offices and the Mayor's office. - San José del Cabo's main square is officially called Plaza Mijares. Jose Antonio Mijares was a Mexican Lieutenant that fought bravely in the Mexican-American war and in a battle in San José del Cabo in 1847. He is considered a Mexican hero. - In the neighboring streets of Plaza Mijares in downtown San José del Cabo, every year from November to June, every Thursday night the famous and magical Art Walk takes place, where the art galleries, bars, restaurants, and shops invite you to have a memorable time. This art district is wonderful! - Just a couple blocks away from downtown is the also famous San José Organic Market which runs from November to May on Saturday mornings. The most amazing foods and things can be found! - Fiesta de la Musica also happens in downtown San José every year in the month of June. Dozens of stages and hundreds of acts put on a unique festival. - San José Jazz Weekend is every February in Plaza del Pescador on the hotel corridor of the town. - Also on the hotel corridor is part of the new bike path (ciclovia) which also runs on the main Transpeninsular highway and parallel to the estuary too. There is a small dirt access to the estuary on part of the path. - The Ironman triathlon takes place in Cabo every year and part of its course runs through San José del Cabo. - San José is a surfing community as well. Locals enjoy riding waves at the numerous surf breaks around. And in the summer San José hosts the Los Cabos Open of Surf which is an official event and takes place in the awesome Zippers wave at Cost Azul beach. So as you can see San José del Cabo is a pretty cool place. Try to come visit if you are in Cabo. A SOULFUL MEXICAN TRADITION

n the past few years, Day of the Dead imagery has seemed to gain popularity in pop-culture, such as the iconic catrinas (female skeletons) and calaveritas (decorated sugar skulls). With the representation of this Mexican tradition spreading wide, it is important to understand the true meaning of this tradition, therefore understanding more about the colorful Mexican culture. This spiritual celebration brings families together, where they join at their loved one’s resting place in the cemetery. The families bring offerings of food and beverage, precious objects, and photos of the deceased. Families gather, sometimes for the entire night, by their loved one’s grave to share food and drinks, play music, and recount stories of their beloved.

Pan de muerto (bread of the dead) is a type of sweet roll traditionally baked during the weeks leading up to the Day of the aDead. It is said that the shapes resembling bones represent the lost one and the ball on top is a tear drop to represent the sorrow. The bones are placed in a circle to represent the circle of life

An example of a Día de los Muertos ofrenda (altar) in which family members place the favorite items of their deceased loved ones. The cempasúchil (sem-pah-soo-cheel) flower is used as a decoration in the Day of the Dead festivities. Its warm and bright color brings life to the commemorative ofrendas.

dates back over 40 years. Baja has always been her home, and a place we loved spending time together, so I jumped at the opportunity to move to my life and real estate business to Los Cabos. I moved here over seven years ago and it was the best decision of my life. JB: What does your typical day look like? BH: As anyone in real estate can attest, my schedule changes day by day. Typically I'm in the office in the mornings and out with clients and at appointments during the day. If I'm lucky, I’ll occasionally hit the golf course with clients in the afternoons. JB: Where do most of your clients come from? What do you think it is about Los Cabos that attracts more people every year? BH: The majority of my clients are from Southern California, which is great because I’m a San Diego native. My clients are attracted to the vibe in Cabo, the spectacular homes and the beautiful contrast of desert, mountains and seas. It’s so easy to hop on a plane from SoCal to Los Cabos, and my clients love having a weekend getaway in paradise to share with family and friends. JB: Favorite way to spend time when not working? BH: When I'm not working, my favorite thing to do is take my little boat to Balandra Bay or the island of Espiritu Santo, both of which are fun day trips off the coast of La Paz. There’s nothing better than cruising the turquoise waters in search of deserted white sand beaches with a few close friends. We like to explore, find a place to have a picnic on the water, play card games and listen to good tunes. In my opinion, that's a perfect Baja afternoon. JB: Favorite city in Baja to visit besides Los Cabos? Why? BH: My favorite city in Baja besides Cabo is Loreto. It's a small town on the Sea of Cortez with rich history and authentic Mexican charm. There are dozens of islands off the coast of Loreto, which makes for great ocean activities like diving, snorkeling and boating. JB: What’s one thing about you that everyone knows? BH: I love to travel and explore Baja. I'm happiest when there is no cell reception and I’m cruising down dirt roads on the way to a new adventure. Baja allows residents a chance to do something out of the ordinary every weekend, and I love living here because of that. JB: What would you tell anyone coming to Los Cabos? BH: If you’ve never been to Los Cabos, my biggest suggestion is to GET OUT OF THE RESORT and EXPLORE! Sure, relaxing poolside is enjoyable, but there is so much to see and experience beyond the gates of your hotel. JB: What has living in Los Cabos taught you about life? JV: Los Cabos has taught me more about what’s important in my life. I’ve learned that you must balance hard work with time for exploration and opportunities to connect with nature. I’ve learned a life without long commutes and a traditional 9-5 is way more my speed. Día De Los Muertos

Day of the Dead (or in Spanish Día de los Muertos), is a holiday celebrated throughout Mexico. Unlike other popular celebrations, this multi-day holiday focuses on family and friends gathering to remember and pray for friends and family who have passed away. This meeting is to help support their spiritual journey. Families will go to cemeteries to be with the souls of the departed and build private altars with photos, memorabilia and favorite food and beverages of their lost loved ones. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: SANCHO'S HAVE YOU BEEN TO SANCHO’S? WHERE IS SANCHO’S? WHAT IS SANCHO’S? Sancho’s is a Sports Bar & Grill, and overall lively little place located on the Cabo San Lucas Marina between docks K & L. The idea of Sancho’s came from the two owners who happen to be two gals from Texas with a passion for sports, music, tacos, tequila and Jägermeister. They both fell in love with Cabo San Lucas and Baja California Sur, and eventually decided to go all in and open a bar of their own. It wasn’t a completely random idea; they actually have experience to make both sides of the business work. Margo has been slinging drinks and managing bars for the last 15 years, the last 5 being here in Cabo San Lucas. Coco got plenty of restaurant and bar experience in college before moving into business accounting, which she has been doing for the last 12 years. Sancho’s is known for a few things. First and foremost, Sancho’s is a bar. The drinks are strong, the beer is cold, the music is on point, and the only thing allowed on TV is sports and music videos. They have great drink specials every day of the week, and a special $1 shot of churro flavored tequila when you check-in on Facebook. Sancho’s has food too. The most popular item on the menu is THE PINK TACO. Yes, it is truly a hot pink, double decker taco with their special seasoned ground beef, refried beans, lettuce, and nacho cheese. Every Saturday, Sancho’s prepares the Cajun Shrimp Boil, which consists of a pound of Cajun boiled, peel and eat shrimp, two pieces of corn, two potatoes, two pieces of Texas sausage, rice, drawn butter and a special pink sauce. It’s served from 10am until 10pm, unless it’s sold out. Reservations are suggested for Saturdays from October through April. Sancho’s just celebrated their 2 Year Anniversary in October. In two short years, they have gone from six food menu items to over 50 food items, including breakfast too. They even have occasional food specials of Sloppy Joes, Gumbo, Frito Chili Pies, Broccoli Cheese Soup, Shrimp Etouffee and others throughout the year. Sancho’s is becoming one of the favorite stops for both locals and tourists. Stop by, grab a drink, have a pink taco (watch out for the hot sauce), and enjoy one of the best views on the marina!

BAJA SUMMER FEST 2018 – On Sunday, September 30, three of Cabo’s most beloved local bars came together for this once a year event at Jungle Bar Pescadero! Jungle Bar Cabo, Cabo Blue Bar and Sancho’s brought bartenders and cooks from their downtown Cabo locations for a day of live music, yummy food, cold drinks, cool merchandise and good vibes! La Flaka Band, Jenelle Aubade, Blues Band MX and Liiroi Douglass all performed during this one day musical lineup. Vendor booths included Cabo Skulls, Ayla Jewelry, Jewelry by In Lak’ech Yoga, Meg San Fellipo, Cabo Premier Real Estate, Julie Overman and Shaka’s. SONGWRITERS IN PARADISE – The 2nd Annual Songwriters in Paradise (also known as SIP CABO) came to Cabo on October 3-6. Patrick Davis, the founder of SIP CABO explained, "Our 2nd Annual Songwriters in Paradise Cabo at The Bahia Hotel, SUR Beach House & Bar Esquina was an incredible success with 13 world class songwriters, 100's of music fans & 4 nights of music at 3 incredible locations! WORLD CARE 2018 – World Care 2018 by the Global Altruism Foundation featured performances by rising music star Ciera MacKenzie and songwriter Cody Webb, with a special performance by multi-platinum guitarist Kenny Olson. The event took place on November 5-7 at the Grand Fiesta Americana Los Cabos. Other World Care 2018 events included yoga classes by Gaby de la Rosa, an art experience by Yandi Monardo, food by Executive Chef Gerardo Rivera and music mashups by Ricky J and local drummer Giuseppe Spargo.
