Los Cabos (or “the capes” in Spanish) is located on the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the State Capital. If you take a look at our Baja Sur map, you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful and the winds are stronger. If you go further north along the Pacific side the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez side. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months. The mountains meet the desert and the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pineoak forests. The main climate of the region is arid to semi-arid; however, there are farming areas where the soil is wet, especially on the Pacific side of the Peninsula.

“The aquarium of the world”

is how Jacques Cousteau described the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this "trap" and either stayed in the warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. Ready to explore?

destinations Cabo San Lucas

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo Arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach (the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area), an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

San José del Cabo

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

The Corridor

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this highway you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, and championship golf courses. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, Nationally Protected coral reef that offers outstanding snorkeling and scuba diving. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and those who just want to get away from it all.

La Paz

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waisthighwater at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

Loreto

Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, Banregio, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the streets or marina will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

Dollars are accepted almost everywhere but you will usually get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate posted.

CASH OR CARD?

Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only establishments. Always ask beforehand and carry cash just in case. Keep in mind your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

GROCERIES

In Cabo San Lucas, Walmart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Walmart, La Comer, Chedraui Selecto or Soriana. Mercado Santa Carmelo or California Ranch Market are good options for specialty foods and dietary restrictions. If you need a quick grab, OXXO stores are reasonably priced convenience stores located all over town.

DRIVING

Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway. The cost varies from $63.00 to $75.00 pesos, depending on your destination. ALTO STOP

IN LOS CABOS BOATING & FISHING

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa Maria Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are many charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos

Located in La Playa just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in

the area with 200 available slips for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

Prepare yourself for an incredible show of nature as you swim side by side with colorful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, sea turtles and more. The Sea of Cortez or the “Aquarium of the World” offers many opportunities to experience incredible underwater wildlife.

SNORKELING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkeling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fishattracting rock. Lover’s Beach

This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkeling in the area. This eightfingered coral reef is about a 1.5hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

Have you ever had a dream about flying like Superman or maybe swimming like a dolphin? Dreams can come true in Cabo! The FlyBoard is a device connected and powered by a personal watercraft, which allows propulsion underwater and in the air. Users are connected to the board by wakeboard boots, under which, water pressure provides thrust. A certified trainer controls the power and height and you control all the movement. Available at Medano Beach or in the Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo.

STAND UP PADDLING

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout while enjoying nature. At Medano Beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.

KITE SURFING

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles. Buggy, ATV, or Jet Ski Rentals There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid Driver’s License. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike, beach cruiser, or joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Just make sure to wear a helmet! Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Cactuslovers may also want to check out the cactus gardens at Wirikuta,

Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, back-country ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Parasailing If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat! Wild Wet Fun Water Park Located about 20 minutes from San José, this water park has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms, a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps water on the bystanders below. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at KM 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends. Sol de Mayo Waterfall Located about an hour and a half away from Los Cabos, the Sol de Mayo Oasis is yet another natural beauty of the Southern Baja California region. The hike leads the adventurous to a majestically beautiful oasis where everyone can swim and even dive into the cool, serene waters. Be sure to pack a lunch, and take plenty of water. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. The cost is $6 US per person to access the easy hike to the clear-water falls.

Baja Sur has been a popular surfing destination since the ‘50s. The East Cape is popular for kite surfing and the Pacific coast has several surf breaks where you will find less crowds. June through November: The summer months are known to be the best as the Southern Hemisphere’s swells send great waves to the Pacific, Cabo San Lucas, San José and the East Cape. December through February: East Cape and Costa Azul are on the flatter side. The Pacific can be good this time of year because it’s exposed to the west swell. March through May: This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

With the desert meeting the Sea of Cortez as a backdrop, there is no doubt why Los Cabos has become a championship golf destination over the years. From Tiger Woods to Nicklaus and Fazio, many of the big names in golf have designed courses on this unique landscape. Many courses offer a reduced rate later in the day during twilight hours. Appropriate golf attire is required on all courses and club rentals are available. Cabo Del Sol Ocean Course - A Jack Nicklaus signature course with six ocean front holes (1.5 miles). Here is a list of the "must sea" beaches to help you decide which is the one for you or just visit them all!

Lovers Beach Getting there is an adventure in itself, since it is reachable only by boat, kayak or any other water vessel. The easiest way to get there is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Your captain will cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean (Divorce Beach). This side is very dangerous for swimming, so swim on Lover’s Beach side only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. Tips: On occasion there are a few vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services. Medano If you’re looking for the action, this is where it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by a lot of souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No gracias.” Water sports are available such as jet skis, parasailing, flyboarding, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and more. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there. Chileno Chileno Beach is a very popular location for snorkeling and swimming due to its calm waters. You’ll find tide pools at the left end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. Public restrooms and showers are available, as well as a handicap ramp that takes you right to the beach. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near KM 14 of the main highway. Tips: Snorkeling visibility is often better in the mornings and you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours. Bring snorkeling gear!

DISCOVER Santa Maria Santa Maria is a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkeling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. However, the beach does have brand new bathrooms and palapas. Location: Traveling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.

Palmilla Palmilla Beach is known for its family friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes and the One&Only Hotel. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at KM 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.

Cerritos Cerritos Beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. You can rent a boogie board or surf board or even take a surf lesson. Location: Exit at KM 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Tips: Come prepared with food, drinks and beach gear. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful, so swim with caution.

Balandra A stunning bay in La Paz (the State's Capital) that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist-high water that is crystal clear. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock.” You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra! Location: A two hour drive from Cabo San Lucas. Once you're in La Paz, follow the main drag along the boardwalk, pass Costa Baja Resort and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed. t’s 8:30 a.m. and I am sitting on top of the world gazing out at a bird’s eye view of Cabo San Lucas and the glittering expanse of ocean that stretches around me. The city is tranquil and the cruise ship docked in the bay hasn’t begun shuttling it’s eager occupants to shore. A fresh breeze carries the sound of waves breaking on the beach below and the sun is mild and low in the sky. It’s truly another beautiful morning in paradise. Cabo is a city that is known for it’s ultra fun day parties and wild night life, but I believe the most under-appreciated and under-utilized time to enjoy Cabo is in the morning. The ocean is calmer, the temperatures are lower and the light of the sunrise makes the colors of the surrounding landscape all the more vivid. Now I realize that even morning people and dedicated fitness enthusiasts most likely look forward to their vacation time to sleep in, but that is what makes this part of the day so special, it’s crowd free. While many are still sleeping off their tequila and tacos, the early morning explorer has access to some really amazing activities good for the body and soul. After living here for just over a year, I have narrowed down my top three activity favorites for embracing nature and staying fit in perfect synchronicity. The first begins back at my bird’s eye view from the top of one of my favorite hikes in the area, Mt. Solmar. Coming from Colorado I use the term “mountain” lightly, however it’s the highest point of the peninsula that extends to the Arch. Though relatively short, the last portion

is steep and sure to make you break a sweat before the summit. The trailhead to this hike is found on the furthest “arch side” of the marina directly across from the naval base. If you use google maps, it is labeled “dog park”. This is because the trailhead is located on a private piece of land owned by Cabo’s very own local dog whisperer Enrique, who is typically there to let you through the gate 8 AM - 5 PM. For this courtesy a small tip is encouraged, but these tips go to help Enrique cover the expenses of his pack of rescue dogs. There are two possible routes up the mountain marked by orange and yellow flags each denoting difficulty. The orange route will take you up the front of Mt. Solmar and is the more challenging trail, while the yellow route guides you up the easier gradual slope of the northern edge. Either option leads you through a wide variety of beautiful wildflowers and other indigenous plants, however the focal part of this hike is the breathtaking view from the top. It is 360 degrees of visual bliss guaranteed to make an impressive addition to any Instagram account. My next activity suggestion embraces the glittering turquoise waters that surround Cabo and gives you unique access to it’s most well known feature, Land’s End Arch. Before moving to Cabo I purchased a paddle board and when I’m not hiking to the clouds, you can find me embracing my inner Moana out on the ocean. I typically paddle a loop starting from Medano Beach, traversing across the mouth of the marina to the base of Mt. Solmar, and following the peninsula up to

the picture perfect Arch. Again the best time to begin this experience is between 7 and 8 AM. This is to ensure that you make it to the Arch before the traffic of water taxis and others boats begins to get heavy typically around 10 am. Along the way there’s a good chance you will spot some of the vast variety of aquatic life that reside here. I have frequently seen seals, colorful fish and once a school of rays leaping out of the water that was comical to witness. Whenever I have guests in town, I always take them to Cabo SUP for their paddle board rentals. Located at my favorite restaurant, SUR Beach House, you can rent paddle boards, kayaks, and their most uncommon addition- paddlebikes. Rental reservations can be easily made online at www.cabosup.com. Included in your rental is a basic beach instruction offered by one of their exceptional staff. I have given you a light overview of my route to the Arch, but to truly get the most out of this experience, I would recommend opting for the guided tour. To balance my “natural cardio” days, my third activity incorporates more traditional workout options, but still set against the unique backdrop of this area. To spice up my typically self-guided workout circuits I turn to Cabo’s newest rising star, personal trainer Jessie Ashley. Recently I joined her for one of her sunrise workouts at Ventanas Del Mar. What I love about Jessie is the way she can tailor each workout to push you closer to your fitness goals, but in a way that’s fun and challenging at the same time. Over the course

of an hour she guided me through a circuit style workout while the sunrise gradually revealed yet another magical ocean view of Cabo. Jessie is also a certified yoga instructor. Her style is vinyasa flow, but in addition she teaches various other styles of yoga such as restorative and yin. The best part about Jessie is she can come to you. In the spirit of keeping your workout singular to the area, I would suggest a private sunrise yoga session on the beach. Environmental education emphasizes the teaching of the holistic nature of the environment through interdisciplinary and problemsolving approaches. This has to start as early in education as possible. Primary school is the natural place to introduce children to environmental education, since at this level they instinctively have a holistic view of the environment; they have not yet been trained to compartmentalize their learning into separate subjects as they will have to do in secondary and higher education. Environmental education connects us to the world and raises awareness of issues impacting the environment upon which we all depend, as well as actions we can take to improve and sustain it. With all of the recent talk about protecting the oceans, there is increasing momentum to learn what we can do to help from our coastal and inland communities. People are rallying together to end practices that are devastating to the environment; despite all of the conservation laws that are on the books, there are still practices that are used which damage the oceans and destroy fisheries. The four major oceans on the planet are home to diverse and distinctive ocean creatures. These animals are not simply just the usual fish or whales we know, but also cephalopods, crustaceans, plants, and even birds. Some of these creatures are on the brink of extinction and many are endangered due to negative human impacts on the marine environment. In order for the abundant and extremely valuable resource of the ocean to be around for future generations, it is important we make sure that we are taking actions that are sustainable and do not allow for bad practices that continue to negatively affect the oceans. Humpback whales are animals that visit the waters of Baja California Sur every year to have their babies. They are a great species to work on environmental education with children. Although giants in size, they are fragile to the impacts we cause on the planet. Thus presentations in schools, followed by a practical class in the field with observation of these animals will continue being realized this season.*

ALL THAT'S FISHY FROM LORETO TO LAND'S END

For the many decades since it was discovered, Cabo San Lucas has been held in high esteem by the international sportfishing community. That community continues to find ways to improve its remarkable fishery. Recently, the overall winner of the 20th Annual Los Cabos Billfish Tournament was Team Sea Angel, scoring 1,700 points. Sea Angel did not weigh in any fish, but instead, they released 28 striped and one blue marlin, which allowed them to hold onto the top spots in the Overall Team Division and the Overall Release Points Jackpot – plus, they won the Day Two Release Points Jackpot. According to Tracy Ehrenberg of Pisces Fleet fame, what most people fail to understand is that this is the first time in the history of the LCBT that the winning team won without killing a fish! The Team Sea Angel, Capt. Billy Chase “BC” Angel, Andrea Angel, Greg Angel, Austin Angel, Chase Travers, Fico Ortega and Juan Carlos Buenes, earned $113,500 for their efforts as well as an invitation to the 2019 Offshore World Championship in Costa Rica. Not to be outdone, The Los Cabos Offshore Tournament took its place in the International Big Game-Big Money Tournaments becoming the eighth in the world to offer a total dollar jackpot of

DISCOVER more than ONE MILLION dollars, said Wayne Bisbee tournament director. “The Bisbee Black & Blue was the first to ever do it back in the ’90s.” Adding, “Seven tournaments throughout the world have since broken through the Million Dollar ceiling.” Bisbee continued, “Only five black and blue marlin were brought to the scale this year out of 150 billfish hooked during the two-day event and not one billfish was brought to the scale that didn’t meet the qualifying weight of 300 pounds – the other 145 billfish were released!” This underscored the contributions made by Bob Bisbee Sr., patriarch of the Bisbee’s Black & Blue Tournament’s phenomena who passed away recently; coincidently his memorial and scattering of ashes were held the day after the event. The final billfish-only tournament, the Bisbee Black & Blue Marlin Tournament, drew 114 teams and a payout of $3,693,625, the second highest total in its history. Angler Charlie Lee and his California-based Team Chinito Bonito on a boat by the same name claimed the tourney title and a cool $3,004,900 on Friday for their 510 pound black marlin brought to the scale on the final day of the three- day event. Looking ahead, on November 2-4, the “The Inaugural Rockstar! Tuna Tournament presented by PELAGIC and the 20th annual WON Tuna Jackpot on Nov. 7-10 both focusing on yellowfin tuna weighing hundreds of pounds, like Charles Workman’s 312-pound monster caught recently aboard the Pisces Sportfishing’s Bill Collector. Later in November, the Los Cabos Big Game Charter Boat Classic, a free visitor-entry tournament is designed to add excitement and competition to their fishing day on a Los Cabos charter boat. DATES: Nov. 13-16. All three November tournaments attract large numbers of teams in search of cash and prizes for their catch of not only yellowfin tuna, but also jackpots of wahoo and dorado. Of course, many are just looking for a day or two of fishing fun, and there’s plenty of that to go around. The huge black and blue marlin are around, but not in large numbers. Striped marlin are thick on the “Finger Bank” where doubledigit releases are not uncommon. The sportfishers often return with many blue fish flags fluttering in the afternoon

breeze, their outriggers often bent to the straining point. Although the ride to areas where the billfish are located can take several hours, inshore, the roosterfish, jack crevalle, sierra mackerel and even an occasional toothy wahoo close to shore are a blast on light tackle as are smaller and much more manageable yellowfin tuna and skipjack. At East Cape, reports of yellowfin, dorado, wahoo, billfish, and roosterfish, all biting, plus excellent bottom fishing; there’s lots of live bait available – sardina, caballito and some mackerel. There are also reports that yellowfin were both inside and outside, with smaller fish from football sized to 40 pounders inside. Under the porpoise, the fish are bigger – to 70 pounds – and were taking cedar plugs, hoochies, squid, and both sardina and caballito. As for dorado, there were lots of smaller schooling fish in the 5- to 10-pound range, mixed with some nice bulls. Lots of wahoo are in close biting on the Rapalas and Marauders; those targeting billfish are getting about one per day. Large pargo with plenty of pompano and sierra are being taken inshore off the bottom as well. The La Paz area was hit-or-miss fishing. Anglers have had to work a lot harder than usual, but everyone caught some. Up at Loreto, there is still warm water and a sprinkling of dorado continue popping up in the fish count. The problem with dorado seems to be finding where they are surfacing on any given day. Some of the fleet fishing farther offshore is still scoring striped marlin catches and releases as well as a few dorado and yellowfin tuna. The rocky points inshore continue to produce cabrilla, various snappers and pargo. Roosterfish and sierra are the best catches along the shorelines with a few toro mixed in. It’s still 85 degrees at mid-day with nights down to 70. Most areas have afternoon winds, but not more than 10 knots and dead calm at sunrise. Visitors can participate or simply be observers at the exciting tournaments offered now. Or they can enjoy an outing and fish for a half or full day in any of Baja Sur’s varied locations. he tourist season has started off with a wonderful vibe and many cool things are going on, and one of them is the famous Art Walk at the San José del Cabo Art District, which runs every Thursday evening from 5pm 9pm between the months of November and June. The Gallery District Association (made up of 12 certified galleries) created, promotes and organizes the Art Walk that has over ten years in existence. It is considered a great and important event because it embraces the spirit of the Baja. It really feels like a small-town celebration or enchanted recreation park. The main associated galleries are Casa Dahlia Gallery, Enrique Bascón Art Gallery, Ivan Guaderrama Art Gallery, Galería de Ida Victoria, Corsica, El Armario, La Sacristia, Old Town Fine Art Gallery, Mata Ortiz Pottery Gallery, Caravane, Arte Gallery, Patricia Mendoza Art Gallery, The Whale's House Jewelry, and don't forget to walk a block to Comonfort street where you will find the unique Frank Arnold Gallery. The local government closes part of the main street of Obregon, as well as part of the side street of Morelos. Other streets participating in the Art Walk are Zaragoza , Hidalgo, Guerrero and Comonfort. All the parking lots and side streets fill up fast, so it is advisable to get there early. The perk of the early bird is the amazing sunset when the Art Walk begins. Downtown San José del Cabo is a safe and clean spot with friendly police and security at the Art Walk. The city square will be decorated with Christmas decorations and the Art Walk streets are filled with lines of lightbulbs. The streets are cobblestone, so it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes. Many people make the Art Walk their pre-dinner activity and make a reservation in a restaurant downtown. Other people make it their after-dinner walk. Any choice is great. There are many delicious restaurants in the area to choose from, and a reservation is suggested due to the crowds on this special evening. There are many outstanding boutique hotels in downtown within the Art Walk that also have excellent restaurants. There are also many food carts or stands with great food choices like tamales, tostadas, churros, popcorn, ice cream, corn on the cob and even fried plantains. Many galleries offer a glass of wine and snacks or hors d'oeuvres. A lot of galleries are examples of Mexican colonial architecture with vibrant colors. Regularly, there are special events such as “artist in attendance,” openings of new galleries and shows of new exhibitions. The galleries offer a vast variety of works from traditional Mexican bead embroidery to traditional Mexican silver jewelry with fire opals, pottery, blown glass, photography, paintings, and sculptures by artists from across Mexico and the world. You will find anything and everything from Huichol art to abstract expressionism, in mediums like bronze, resin, oil, acrylic, and mixed media. Plus, authentic Mexican folk art from many different regions around Mexico. Also ceramic, woodwork, and cast pieces. You will discover works from both internationally

renowned masters as well as a variety of younger artists who are showing extraordinary talent. You will most likely have the opportunity to meet and talk with gallery owners and the artists themselves about the process of their creations. It is not necessary to be an art expert or collector. The Art Walk has something of interest for everyone. For example, you'll be treated to music and shows on the street. And there are fun toys for kids for sale by legal street vendors too. It is definitely a great cultural experience. It's a general thought that if you are in Cabo, the famous Art Walk on Thursdays is a must. There are many other establishments to explore at the Art Walk too, not just galleries. For example, there are many real estate offices that offer unbelievable properties, and traditional Mexican souvenir shops all around. These souvenir shops have the full range of traditional Mexican products. You will find all types of catrinas, blankets, ponchos, sarapes, Talavera from Puebla, papel de amate, Virgin Mary and Sacred Heart items. Also hammocks, maracas, balero toys, yoyos, Mexican flutes, tequila shot glasses, palm sombreros, Mexican revolution sombreros or Zapata sombreros, sombreros vaquero (cowboy hats), guitars from Paracho, Michoacan, damiana tea and liquor, traditional Mexican sweets like dulce de mango, guayaba and papaya, art and decorations from sea snails, molcajetes (stone salsa grinders), woven baskets, carved wood figurines from Palo Fierro wood, and Mexican tablecloths. You will find all types of clothes and dresses like women blouses called blusa San Antonino, blusa Tehuacán, blusa de Pajaro, blusa Rococo and blusa Tehuana, all from Oaxaca. And Huipil Yalala, vestido (dress) San Antonino, vestido halter de telar and pabellones (mosquito bed nets) also from Oaxaca. From Chiapas, vestido de flores and blusa de tres tiras (three stripe blouse) and caminos de mesa which are center tablecloths. Within the Art Walk zone is also the main downtown plaza called Plaza Mijares. Here you will find the church, and on the plaza square many local artist show their works. This is a beautiful area with many benches and small and large trees. Some kids will ride bicycles and you see a lot of smiles. There are painting tables for children too. At the far end, the tall flag pole with the large Mexican flag stands proud in the square. Around the corner in the same plaza you will spot the clock tower and the statues of some important men of Baja including Manuel Mijares, who was a war hero and from whom the plaza gets its name and honors. You can read all their achievements on the plaques that are under their statues. Just a few blocks from the Art Walk is the wonderful Municipal Market where during the hours of 7 am to 5 pm you will find many amazing things. Like fresh seafood and fish, vegetables, ranch cheeses, fresh tortillas, local bee honey, sea salt, piloncillo (raw sugar cane molasses), ranch meats, poultry and regional organic eggs. And there is also a little store in the corner called Viva Mexico where you will find any traditional Mexican thing you can imagine. For example, they have the magical piedra pomez (pumice) that is very good for many things like exfoliating and abrasive cleaning, and even in the construction of thermal walls. So try to visit this little market sometime if you have an opportunity. Well, I think that can give you a good idea of what to expect when visiting the Art Walk this vacation, and I hope it helps you in planning a memorable evening with your loved ones. *

he youth of Cabo are the window to the future of the area. A Los Cabos non-profit organization, Los Niño’s del Capitan has been providing helpful services to the younger generation and single parents in Cabo San Lucas since it’s foundation in 1999. Many children in Los Cabos are monitored by siblings, family members and even neighbors in some situations. These circumstances are prone to provoke environments of malnutrition, unsafe incidents and abuse. None of these options were acceptable for one woman with a soft heart for kids. With nothing but the best intentions in mind, founder Senora Herminia de Losada Robles began by placing a sign in her restaurant window to attract attention to her cause. Starting with only seven children, all whom of which were abandoned by their mother, Sra. Robles began the care in a vacant house that belong to another foundation in the area. Little did she expect the bestowing of a 5,000 m2 (53,000 sq. ft.) property from Captain Alberto Vargas Aguinaga; thus The Children of the Captain was born. In 2001 a thatched-roof palapa was erected on the donated space and has grown to be the home of over 100 children today. Operation is controlled by both a dedicated group of individuals who share Sra. Robles’s vision, and amazing volunteers. Monetary donations are used to directly impact and improve the lifestyle and upbringing of the children involved. Offered to the community are nursery programs for children ages one to three and pre- school to elementary for ages three to 10. Parenting school for those responsible for the children after hours was added to the programs diversity in 2004. Dental services are provided for all attendees along with classes for sexual education and trade jobs. Kids and broken families in search of a nurturing environment from all over the Mexican Republic are welcomed at Los Niño’s del Capitan. In partner with the Los Cabos Children’s Foundation, the students arrive to the center at 7 o’clock in the morning to eat a provided breakfast. After help with homework and daily computer assignments, they take part in self-esteem boosting activities and physical exercise. After the light outing, they are provided with new homework, a bit of dinner and are picked up by their guardians at 6:30 PM. Individual children can be directly sponsored by an outside source, however, your ability to donate does not simply stop at monetary donations. Sharing your talents in groups through music, arts & crafts or even teaching an English class can be scheduled directly with the organization. The dental and medical clinics on site are open to qualified personnel to contribute their time and abilities to care for the children and adults in the Los Cabos area. Lastly, a day-event like whale watching or viewing a turtle release can be funded to enrich these kids with unforgettable life experiences. The Cabo Tomatillos is a ladies social networking group where members are invited to monthly get-togethers. No kids, no boyfriends… just ladies getting together to have fun and meet new people. This private Facebook group has quickly grown to include more than 300 local women in just over a year. Not to be confused with the Cabo Tomatoes, a group that has been around since 1992. PregUNTAS CON JASON AH: Cuéntanos un poco sobre ti. ¿De donde eres? JK: Soy de San José, California. Comencé a trabajar en un gimnasio cuando tenía 15 años. Descubrí CrossFit en 2006 y decidí abrir mi primer gimnasio en el 2008, después de atender la Universidad. Ese mismo año gané los Juegos CrossFit y todo ha ido creciendo desde entonces. LOCALS ATTEND CROSSFIT SEMINAR Jason Khalipa, founder of NCFIT CrossFit gyms, was at NCFIT Cabo San Lucas on November 3rd to share his knowledge at a Movement Seminar. Jason shared his movement and mindset tips with attendees, and then followed with a community workout including a WOD session where he took one-on-one time with each person to assist in perfecting the moves. Guests also enjoyed snacks and beverages during a 30 minute meet and greet.

Q&A WITH JASON AH: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Where are you from? JK: I'm from San Jose, CA. I first started working at the gym when I was 15. I found CrossFit in 2006 and decided to open our first gym after college in 2008. That same year I won the CrossFit Games and things have grown ever since. We now have 20 locations globally focused on group style training open to the public, we also service corporate fitness centers. AH: In your opinion, why has CrossFit become such a popular sport? JK: When watching the NFL, for example, it becomes challenging to relate to what it feels like to be a player on the field. In CrossFit anyone can do a workout and get an idea of how the athletes are feeling. 90% or more of the fans of CrossFit do it....that’s pretty rare in professional sports. AH: At what age did you take interest in CrossFit? I won the CrossFit Games age 22. AH: Who is your lifestyle mentor and why? JK: I look up to those who are achieving their individual goals while not forgetting about others in the process. Finding your own version of success while maintaining a family and great relationships is the goal. AH: When was your first trip to Los Cabos and what inspired you to open up a gym here? JK: Cabo is a very special place to my family and I. I proposed to my wife here in 2008, celebrated my daughter finishing her chemotherapy treatments here, and I love the people and the food. We took over an existing gym here because of a long friendship we had. One of my friends needed some support so we jumped in and have been helping ever since. It's a great location to have. AH: What are your favorite things to do when you are here in Los Cabos? Favorite restaurants? JK: I love staying at the Resort at Pedregal, they do an excellent job. I love the food in Cabo, especially The Office, Flora Farms and Comal. Spending time with the family and being in the water are my favorite things to do. AH: What has been your greatest accomplishment as an athlete? JK: I represented the USA 3 times in a worldwide CrossFit Competition and I also have taken all 3 podium positions at the CrossFit Games.

DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS AT CASA CALAVERA & OMNIA LOS CABOS – Day of the Dead (or

in Spanish Día de los Muertos), is a holiday celebrated throughout Mexico. Unlike other popular celebrations, this multi-day holiday focuses on family and friends gathering to remember and pray for friends and family who have passed away. In honor of this special day and in celebration of the afterlife, Casa Calavera and OMNIA Los Cabos hosted a festive two-day event on November 1 & 2. At Casa Calavera guests enjoyed a traditional family-style dinner with bottomless margaritas and unlimited domestic beers along with a live mariachi band. The entrance to the restaurant was beautifully decorated with candle lit “ofrendas” (or offerings) in honor of Anthony Bourdain, Avicii, Juan Gabriel, and Joel Robuchon. On Friday OMNIA hosted a special Día de Los Muertos themed “Feel Good Fridays” with special guest DJ Hector! @OMNIALosCabos @CasaCalaveraLosCabos

INFERNO FEST – The summer edition of Inferno Fest took place at Metate on

October 19. The concept was created by Chefs Abraham Tamez and Cesar Pita in collaboration with 14 other local chefs. Event organizer Bea Mejia from All Access Cabo explained, “500 meat lovers gathered to enjoy great food, live music and cocktails at Metate‘s garden.” The event included meat rich food stations with delicacies including crocodile, chorizo, pork and more, and live music with DJ Antonio Floren and DJ Adal. HALLOWEEN AT MIXOLOGY FUSION BAR – Mixology, located in San José del Cabo, was inspired by a 1920’s speakeasy. My friend and I decided to try Mixology on the Saturday before Halloween; the music was excellent, the drinks were delicious, and the dance floor was packed with people in Halloween costumes. Thursday and Friday nights are more chill and focused on cocktails, while Saturdays have more of a nightclub vibe with different musical artists expressing their art each week. But beware…due to the nod to a modern speakeasy, Mixology is not easy to find. We had to ask several locals until we finally found the ornate wood door that leads into the club (there is no sign). This “hidden” aspect of the bar makes Mixology a place of mystery and a favorite among Los Cabos locals. Can’t decide what to drink? Try a Tlacolula. Inspired by an ancient Mexican drink it contains pineapple, tequila and hierbabuena. If you love specialty cocktails with a mix of house and techno music, Mixology is the place for you! @MixologyFusionBar

DAY OF THE DEAD ALTAR COMPETITION AT FLORA FARMS – Flora Farms hosted their 4th

annual Day of the Dead Altar Competition on November 1. The event paired local businesses with local charities for the chance to win cash prizes for the charity with “Most Traditional”, “Most Original”, and “Best Mix of Traditional & Original” altars. Executive Chef Alex Branch explains, “Viva el Vino is our wine dinner series that features Baja and California wineries. The dishes are created by collaborating with both the winery's sommelier and/or enologist. This allows for perfect pairings, accentuating the wines subtleties and underlying notes. The food uses the freshest local ingredients and goes perfectly well with the wine.” So far Herringbone has showcased wines from Bodega El Cielo, Casa Magoni, Casa Baloyan and Roganto. The special menu will change every month depending on the wines offered. I had the opportunity to try Viva El Vino in October. Las Posadas is a tradition that has been taking place in Mexico for more than 400 years. Thease nine days of religious observance start on December 16 through Christmas Eve on December 24. The celebration traditionally began with a candle lit procession with individuals dressed up as Joseph and Mary leading the way. In modern times, Posadas do not always include a processional and can look more like a fiesta with tamales, piñatas, and more. Many businesses in and around Los Cabos will also celebrate and recognize their hardworking staff with a party called a “Christmas Posada.”
