Most likely no one has ever pictured mountains with waterfalls and streams running throughout and pine forests with wild horses as inhabitants. Our love for the natural beauty of the area has inspired this issue of Destino in which we want to share an other side of Baja: the mountain range of the Sierra de la Laguna. Read along to learn about this majestic place and the completely different ecosystem that is only about an hour away from Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Los Cabos (or “the capes” in Spanish) is located on the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the State Capital. If you take a look at our Baja Sur map, you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful and the winds are stronger. If you go further north along the Pacific side the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez side. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months. The mountains meet the desert and the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pineoak forests. The main climate of the region is arid to semi-arid; however, there are farming areas where the soil is wet, especially on the Pacific side of the Peninsula.

“The aquarium of the world”

is how Jacques Cousteau described the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this "trap" and either stayed in the warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. Ready to explore?

destinations Cabo San Lucas

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo Arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach (the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area), an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

San José del Cabo

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

The Corridor

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this highway you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, and championship golf courses. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, Nationally Protected coral reef that offers outstanding snorkeling and scuba diving. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and those who just want to get away from it all.

La Paz

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waisthighwater at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

Loreto

Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, Banregio, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the streets or marina will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

Dollars are accepted almost everywhere but you will usually get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate posted.

CASH OR CARD?

Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only establishments. Always ask beforehand and carry cash just in case. Keep in mind your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

GROCERIES

In Cabo San Lucas, Walmart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Walmart, La Comer, Chedraui Selecto or Soriana. Mercado Santa Carmelo or California Ranch Market are good options for specialty foods and dietary restrictions. If you need a quick grab, OXXO stores are reasonably priced convenience stores located all over town.

DRIVING

Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway. The cost varies from $63.00 to $75.00 pesos, depending on your destination. ALTO STOP

IN LOS CABOS BOATING & FISHING

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa Maria Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are many charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos

Located in La Playa just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in

the area with 200 available slips for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

Prepare yourself for an incredible show of nature as you swim side by side with colorful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, sea turtles and more. The Sea of Cortez or the “Aquarium of the World” offers many opportunities to experience incredible underwater wildlife.

SNORKELING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkeling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fishattracting rock. Lover’s Beach

This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkeling in the area. This eightfingered coral reef is about a 1.5hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

Have you ever had a dream about flying like Superman or maybe swimming like a dolphin? Dreams can come true in Cabo! The FlyBoard is a device connected and powered by a personal watercraft, which allows propulsion underwater and in the air. Users are connected to the board by wakeboard boots, under which, water pressure provides thrust. A certified trainer controls the power and height and you control all the movement. Available at Medano Beach or in the Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo.

STAND UP PADDLING

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout while enjoying nature. At Medano Beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.

KITE SURFING

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles. Buggy, ATV, or Jet Ski Rentals There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid Driver’s License. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike, beach cruiser, or joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Just make sure to wear a helmet! Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Cactuslovers may also want to check out the cactus gardens at Wirikuta,

Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, back-country ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Parasailing If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat! Wild Wet Fun Water Park Located about 20 minutes from San José, this water park has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms, a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps water on the bystanders below. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at KM 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends. Sol de Mayo Waterfall Located about an hour and a half away from Los Cabos, the Sol de Mayo Oasis is yet another natural beauty of the Southern Baja California region. The hike leads the adventurous to a majestically beautiful oasis where everyone can swim and even dive into the cool, serene waters. Be sure to pack a lunch, and take plenty of water. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. The cost is $6 US per person to access the easy hike to the clear-water falls.

Baja Sur has been a popular surfing destination since the ‘50s. The East Cape is popular for kite surfing and the Pacific coast has several surf breaks where you will find less crowds. June through November: The summer months are known to be the best as the Southern Hemisphere’s swells send great waves to the Pacific, Cabo San Lucas, San José and the East Cape. December through February: East Cape and Costa Azul are on the flatter side. The Pacific can be good this time of year because it’s exposed to the west swell. March through May: This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

With the desert meeting the Sea of Cortez as a backdrop, there is no doubt why Los Cabos has become a championship golf destination over the years. From Tiger Woods to Nicklaus and Fazio, many of the big names in golf have designed courses on this unique landscape. Many courses offer a reduced rate later in the day during twilight hours. Appropriate golf attire is required on all courses and club rentals are available. Cabo Del Sol Ocean Course - A Jack Nicklaus signature course with six ocean front holes (1.5 miles). Known for its “3 finest finishing holes in golf” the Ocean Course is said to be one of the most difficult yet beautiful courses in the area. 18 holes, 7,075 yards, par 72. While many parts of the United States and other countries are buffeted with extreme winter conditions, most of Baja Sur’s visitors who are arriving this month have fantasized about the bright Baja sun and are eager to bask in the Baja activities that are only available in the summer back home. And they won’t be disappointed! Locals who are accustomed to the good fishing offered here year ‘round have been even more astonished by the quality and quantity of offshore, inshore and beach catches recently. Visiting first-time, casual and seasoned anglers all seem to agree. Much to the delight of those who prefer to avoid rocking around in a boat, the recent results of fishing from shore on Baja beaches have been remarkable! All the way from the Pacific side up to Todos Santos, heads are shaking, and tongues are wagging as dorado, snapper and even an occasional quality-sized roosterfish or two are being taken from the beach. On the Sea of Cortez side from San Jose to Los Barriles in East Cape, the beaches are offering similar results. As both fly and spinning rod-equipped anglers prowl the beaches with little or no surf to speak of, they are catching more of the same as the Pacific side plus sierra, pompano and ladyfish (that fight like a smallish tarpon). Those fishing in boats close to shore are also enjoying more of the same plus dorado, small yellowfin tuna, sierra, jack crevalle and bonito on the surface. When the surface action slows, the strategy changes and a variety of lures along with live or dead bait, are dropped down to the pinnacles -- think underwater mountains -- where an entirely different array of fish lurk, most of which are great table fare. Even the wahoo have been a regular on the catch list; with their long, speedy runs, they are always a popular addition and great eating. Crossing the line between inshore and offshore are the extraordinary monster yellowfin tuna being encountered at

various banks -- now think underwater plateaus -- where various baitfish congregate, in turn attracting not only the huge tuna but also the even grander black and blue marlin that are much larger than the striped marlin found in the same areas. On one of the plateaus, the “Finger Bank,” located over 50-miles north of “Lands End” on the Pacific side, the sardina gather and the stripers along with dorado and even more yellowfin tuna congregate to gorge on them; locals agree that this is one of the best striper shows in several years on this bank. This is easily confirmed by the number of blue flags attached to many of the sport fisher’s outriggers in the Cabo San Lucas Harbor. Double-digit catch and releases are not uncommon and in some cases as many as 60+ billfish are released by experienced crews. Up in the other direction to the north in the Sea of Cortez, the seasonal north winds are always a factor this time of year and they impact the fishing somewhat. No worries, however. Usually the winds back off after a few days, or they remain offshore in the morning allowing for a few hours of fishing before they reach shore. Winter is on the mind of the East Cape anglers with the arrival of sierra and north winds -- always a sure sign of a change in season. Still many fall species are in the neighborhood. The trick is picking the right day to fish. This is a conflicted community with about 50% fisherfolk and 50% wind surfers, which basically means half will always be satisfied with the weather. Muertos Bay is a good example of where inshore fishing can be great for bonito, big jack crevalle, pargo, cabrilla and sierra when the wind backs off. During the last lull, the wahoo showed up catching some anglers off guard as the toothy wahoo sliced and diced, not only the baitfish but the monofilament lines of anglers who hadn’t changed over to wire leaders for the sierra. It was more of the same at La Paz Bay as north winds dictated the days for anglers to either fish or explore the city. Farther north at Loreto there were still cabrilla and some early-arriving yellowtail down deep, plus sierra signaling the transition from fall to winter. Yet the dorado and the bonito continued to bite and probably will until the sea temps fall. Welcome to our sport fishing world, where fantasy merges with fact. Effects of plastic in our oceans b y N i k l as Manger, projec t lead er and g u i de at C abo Tre k In the past week fishermen found a washed-up sperm whale on the coast of Indonesia, with more than 6 kilos of plastic in its stomach. The parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s conservation academy found more than 1,000 assorted pieces of plastic including flip-flops, bottles, bags and 115 drinking cups. Unfortunately, this not a unique case and it happens to more and more marine animals, especially whales and dolphins. Every year more than 10 million tons of plastic enter the oceans and endanger around 700 different species. Today plastic is used for almost everything, so through bad disposal and washing of plastic textiles plastic finds its way through rivers and lakes. This way thousands of plastic bags, cups and other single use items end up in our oceans. The problem is that plastic is not bio degradable and takes years to fall into smaller parts (micro-plastic). For example, a plastic cub takes 500 years to dissolve. Most of the marine animals canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t distinguish plastic from its normal food. In zooplankton, for example, it corresponds with the concentration of tiny plastic particles in the water because their feeding appendages are designed to handle particles of a certain size. If the particle falls into this size range it must be food. This leads to animals hurting their digestive systems and even starving to death, even though their stomach is full. The problem doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop there. If small fish, crabs and shrimps eat plastic and get eaten by bigger fish, the micro plastic is given from animal to animal until even we humans consume it. In the current development, there will be more plastic particles in the ocean than fish until 2050. We as consumers have a massive impact on these outcomes. There needs to be a change of mind and everyone must take part in it, especially people on their vacation, when consumption is at its highest. Companies such as Cabo Trek are starting various projects to reduce single use plastic like water bottles and snack-packages on their tours and start offering ecofriendly options. Here is a list of the "must sea" beaches to help you decide which is the one for you or just visit them all!

Lovers Beach Getting there is an adventure in itself, since it is reachable only by boat, kayak or any other water vessel. The easiest way to get there is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Your captain will cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean (Divorce Beach). This side is very dangerous for swimming, so swim on Lover’s Beach side only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. Tips: On occasion there are a few vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services. Medano If you’re looking for the action, this is where it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by a lot of souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No gracias.” Water sports are available such as jet skis, parasailing, flyboarding, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and more. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there. Chileno Chileno Beach is a very popular location for snorkeling and swimming due to its calm waters. You’ll find tide pools at the left end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. Public restrooms and showers are available, as well as a handicap ramp that takes you right to the beach. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near KM 14 of the main highway. Tips: Snorkeling visibility is often better in the mornings and you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours. Bring snorkeling gear!

DISCOVER Santa Maria Santa Maria is a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkeling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. However, the beach does have brand new bathrooms and palapas. Location: Traveling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.

Palmilla Palmilla Beach is known for its family friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes and the One&Only Hotel. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at KM 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.

Cerritos Cerritos Beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. You can rent a boogie board or surf board or even take a surf lesson. Location: Exit at KM 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Tips: Come prepared with food, drinks and beach gear. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful, so swim with caution.

Balandra A stunning bay in La Paz (the State's Capital) that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist-high water that is crystal clear. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock.” You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra! Location: A two hour drive from Cabo San Lucas. Once you're in La Paz, follow the main drag along the boardwalk, pass Costa Baja Resort and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed. couple of months ago I began my article by mentioning how amazed I am every time I fly into Los Cabos and see the beautiful contrast of the sandy brown desert landscape with the electric blues of the Sea of Cortez. But on that occasion, I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t say anything about the impressive mountain range that rises parallel to the shoreline all throughout southern Baja. This is the magnificent Sierra La Laguna. I have hiked it many times, but only twice I did long hikes. Once going up the Pacific side of the mountains and another time hiking up the eastern side of the range facing the Sea of Cortez. In the future I am really looking forward to planning and doing a multi-day expedition to the summit valleys, for maybe four or five days. One day hiking up, a few days camping at the top and one day hiking down. So, in this issue I would like to point out all I know and have learned about these incredible mountains, and also some tips for you if you decide to explore this area sometime.

The Baja Peninsula has three other major mountain ranges, the Sierra Juarez, the Sierra de San Pedro Martir, and the Sierra de la Giganta. Being all part of the Pacific Crest, which includes U.S. National Parks like Denali and Yosemite. The Sierra La Laguna is the southernmost range of the Crest system. The mountains provide home for many animals and plant life. Some places have cacti, palms and pine trees that grow side by side with cold pools and little waterfalls next to huge granite boulders. The reserve is a very popular place for studies and research. Every year the local schools and universities do expeditions to the summit. The Sierra La Laguna, was formerly an island in prehistoric times, and was created about ten million years ago. The name Sierra la Laguna is due to the fact that before

there existed a lagoon in the summit valley and it was a sacred place for the Guaycura people where they held ceremonies in the summer months to adore their god Guaymongo. The Guaycuras were a peaceful tribe of hunter gatherers. The men were naked and the women wore skirts. It is said that when the Spaniards arrived, the Guaycuras made canals in the summit and drained the lagoon. The region is a mix of rugged mountains, steep canyons, valleys and large dry plains and area receives an average of about forty inches of rain per year. The flora and fauna include oak and pine trees, mesquite and palo fierro, and mammals like deer, coyotes, hares, pumas, foxes, doves, vultures, hawks, and eagles, plus 40 species of reptiles and hundreds of species of insects. Many of the summits in the Sierra reach the height of 5,000 to 7,000 feet with the sea level just a few miles away. This magnificent area is sparsely inhabited, attracting mainly hikers, mountain bikers and naturalists. The mountain range walls are full of granite and many other rocks, so the sightseeing is amazing and if you are into geology you will love it. The Sierra is located within the La Paz Municipality and Los Cabos Municipality. The core area of the biosphere is centered on the higherelevation oak-pine forests, while the transition area includes the communities of Todos Santos, El Pescadero, El Triunfo, San Antonio, San Bartolo, Buena Vista, Los Barriles, Las Cuevas, Santiago and Miraflores. The Sierra de la Laguna receives more rainfall than any other part of the peninsula. The heavy rains are from July to October. November through May is the most popular time for hiking. FACTS • On the 6th of June in 1994 UNESCO established the 11,600 hectares of this mountain range a biosphere reserve. • The surface area of the reserve is 277,832 Mexican hectares. • The Picacho de la Laguna is the highest peak (2,161 meters), and it is the highest point in the State of Baja California Sur. • There are more than 900 plant species. About 20% of them are endemic to the Baja peninsula. • The Sierra de la Laguna is home to about 224 species of plants. • The highest elevations of the Sierra La Laguna have pineoak forests. • There are tropical dry forests at about 2,600 feet. • At about 950 feet starts the Sonoran Desert landscape and goes down to the coast. • The Tropic of Cancer runs directly across the Cape and the Sierra La Laguna at 23.5 degrees latitude. • The biosphere reserve is the main source of water for 67% of the people in the state. • The area has about 700 endemic species of vegetables. • 289 species of birds exist in the reserve. 111 are resident and the rest are migratory. 41 are endemic. • Of the 47 species of mammals in the reserve, 40 are endemic to Baja. • The reserve has 7 great canyons.

HIKING There are many miles of undeveloped land and hidden trails throughout these mountains to explore. As I mentioned, The Sierra de la Laguna can be approached either from the East Cape (Sea of Cortez side) or from the West (Pacific Ocean side). To hike the summit the preferred way is from the western side of the Sierra starting from La Burrera ranch near Todos Santos. This is a faster but steeper route than from the east side. From the east side there are a few access points into the Sierra like Cañon San Dionísio from Santiago, Cañon San Bernardo from Miraflores, and Cañon San Pablo from Caduaño. Most hikes are in various types of trails, canyons, and cow paths that wind through the mountains. Depending on the level of the experience you want, you can tailor your adventure or tour. You can hike down the opposite way you went up when hiking the summit. At the highest point you are able to see the Pacific Ocean on one side, and the Gulf of California/Sea of Cortez on the other. Many hikes can start near Santiago, a one hour drive from San José del Cabo. Santiago town is called Santiago de los Coras. It is almost exactly on the Tropic of Cancer. In the town you'll find the Mission of Santiago de Los Coras, founded in 1721. Padre Napoli founded the Mission. There are many streams and waterfalls in the area, and there are many cold pools throughout the hikes to enjoy a swim and great for cooling down. You must have good balancing techniques when hiking across boulders along the streams. You can hike partly on streams barefoot, but be careful because the sand can be sharp and hot. Wear great hiking shoes or good

trail sneakers. Take plenty of water and hats or scarves for sun protection. It is great to get off the beach once in a while and explore the mountains as you have the best of both worlds here. Your hotel concierge can easily help you in booking a tour or expedition to the Sierra. There are many companies that run day tours to the famous waterfall in CaĂąon de la Zorra and the hot springs in Santa Rita, both near Santiago, and both with fairly easy 15-minute hikes or less. Also, online you can find the best operator for overnight camping expeditions to the summit of the Sierra La Laguna. They lead guided treks throughout the Sierra with a range of day trips, excursions and overnight expeditions. You can camp where you wish. Be responsible, pack out your trash, don't contaminate the water, and leave no trace. Take many pictures and memories. If you drive the highway through the Sierra you will find San Bartolo town. It is a great spot to enjoy traditional guava, pitahaya and mango sweets, turnovers and fruit preserves. Also in the drive you will encounter Miraflores where you will find beautiful hand-made leather items. So as you can see, the Sierra La Laguna is a magical place to be explored for sure someday. My son is going with his school on a 3-day camping trip there next February, and hopefully I will go soon also. Since 2010 there has been Children’s Libraries in La Paz, Baja California Sur, specifically designed and created for children from 1- 12 years to fall in love with reading. Currently there are 5 free Abrapalabra Children's Libraries located in strategic places throughout the city. The goal of Abrapalabra is to make books available to children and to share them as a source of inspiration and fun. Helping to change the misconception that they are boring and compulsory, which is often the impression children get from their school work. At Abrapalabra, kids will always find original, interesting, attractive, and inviting stories for reflection. Their goal is that children improve their reading comprehension through creative manual activities that make their imagination fly. Every afternoon from 2:00 to 6:00pm, from Monday to Friday and on Saturday mornings, they have storytellers and librarians who overflow with creativity and inspiration to offer to their young readers. In addition to the books, Abrapalabra also offers Robotics and reading comprehension workshops with Lego Education teaching materials. WHERE DO THE LOCALS EAT? / ¿DÓnde comen los locales? Latitude 22+ Roadhouse by Jake Snook

Perched atop of the hill behind Costco at kilometer 4.5 on Transpeninsular Highway #1 in Cabo San Lucas sits one of the homes of locals, gringos and ex-pats of the Cabo community. The original home of all the “No Bad Days” car decals in town, Latitude 22+ Roadhouse has been serving up home-cooked American favorites, accompanied by live music and a “welcome home” feeling of hospitality for years. Owner Mike Grzanich decided to move locations on March 3, 2004 to provide excess seating for their daily goers and to acquire more space for wacky décor. With hundreds of license plates and business cards splattered across the walls, the nautical themed building has insideoutside seating and a monstrous bar viewing both Medano beach and the famous Los Arcos of our beloved home. From corned beef hash with two eggs and hash browns for breakfast to Jumbo BBQ Beef Ribs and Croatian Prime Rib for dinner, the Roadhouse menu can accompany almost anyone looking to fill their carnivorous void at any time of day. Open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., closed Tuesdays, with seating for 120, this place has been providing good food and friendly service as a minimum standard for enough time to gain the attention of TripAdvisor as #12 on the list of Cabo favorite places for nightlife and bar atmosphere. Large portions at affordable prices is the name-ofthe-game at the roadhouse. The menu ranges from around $5-$8 USD for burgers and fries or an appetizer, to about $9-$12 USD for entrees like their famous chicken fried steak (this is also including the ridiculous prime rib that is cooked all day long to provide for the regulars each night). A one-of-a-kind spot in Cabo with a million dollar view, Latitude 22+ Roadhouse is a staple of the Cabo San Lucas community that won’t be leaving anytime soon. Señora Celerina, the famous flower lady of Cabo, has been selling flowers in downtown Cabo for many years. Any Cabo local or frequent visitor is sure to recognize her. Sadly, Celerina lost her husband in late 2018 after 33 years of marriage. After hearing the news, the community came together to set up cash donation boxes at Tanga Tanga, Sancho’s, Cabo Cantina, Hooligans, and Solomon’s Landing to help Celerina pay for funeral expenses and care for her 6 children. El evento permitió la clasificación Paula a los Juegos Panamericanos de Lima, Perú, en el 2019, los cuales son el preparativo para Tokio 2020. “No ha sido un proceso fácil, ya que tuve que bajar de categoría y para ello fue necesario acudir a un equipo multidisciplinario para que no hubiera afectaciones. Vamos bien y lo más importante ahora es recuperar los puntos de ranking que tenía en la categoría anterior, entre los mejores 50 del mundo,” explicó a @BCSnoticias.

The event allowed Paula to classify for the Pan American Games of Lima, Peru, in 2019, which are the preparation for Tokyo 2020. "It has not been an easy process, since I had to go down a category, and for that it was necessary to go into a multidisciplinary team so that there would be no impact. We are doing well and the most important thing now is to recover the ranking points that I had in the previous category, among the 50 best in the world," she explained to @BCSnoticias.

Sabor A Cabo Rural – Sabor A Cabo Rural focuses on showing the authentic regional cuisine of the Baja in a family friendly atmosphere. On November 18, more than 250 people descended on Los Tamarindos organic farm-to-table restaurant in the quiet neighborhood of Animas Bajas. The yearly event aims to boost the economy of local farms and restaurants. Guests were invited to spend the day meandering through a field of food and drink booths while watching traditional Mexican dancing and live entertainment on the main stage. Enrique Silva, Event Director and Chef & Owner of Los Tamarindos announced this year’s revenues will be used by the new municipal DIF to improve dining rooms in and around Los Cabos. Grand Opening of Mar del Cabo Boutique Hotel – On December 5,

Mar del Cabo debuted their new boutique hotel located halfway between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. The evening included a cocktail reception and ribbon cutting ceremony, followed by room tours and party with live music on the beach. Formerly Marbella Suites, this is the sixth Velas Resort property, and the only property offering a European plan (not AllInclusive). After a four-million-dollar renovation, Mar del Cabo opened its doors with 46 one- and two-bedroom suites and two penthouses. The property features stylish Mexico inspired decor and includes Encanto Restaurant serving local Baja dishes and coastal Mediterranean favorites, a bar, oceanfront spa and pool, and outdoor spaces to hold private events. Carmina Burana – Carmina Burana is a collection of poems from the 11th-13th century. In 1936, German composer Carl Orf set 24 of these poems to music, including the vastly popular song “O Fortuna.” On November 17, the Rotary Club of Los Cabos brought a selection of Carl Orf’s music to life with more than 100 artists including a live orchestra, singers, and ballet dancers at the Cultural Pavilion in Cabo. Director Karen Lynne, along with soprano Carla Acosta, and baritones Luis Castillo and Daniel Cerón, put on a wonderful performance that captivated the audience and led to multiple standing ovations and encores. The performance benefited SMILES Los Cabos, who provide twice yearly surgical services to children afflicted with facial cleft deformities in and around Los Cabos. For me, this was a very special and nostalgic performance. After 18 years dancing ballet, Carmina Burana remains my favorite piece of music I ever had the opportunity to dance to. @LosCabosRotaryClub

Bazar Navideño – On December 5 and 6, the Koral Shops hosted Bazar Navideño, a festive holiday themed market full of unique Christmas gifts and services. Shop offerings included handmade jewelry, a mix of high fashion and artisan clothing, home décor, handbags, children’s clothing accessories, flavored Mezcal, shoes, makeup, spa services, and more! Ladera San José also had a booth set up to explain their new residential housing project located in Cerro Colorado (behind the Koral Center) with houses starting at $399K and condos starting at $165K. If you missed the event, don’t worry! The Koral Shops are open daily with plenty of brands, products, and services for tourists, businessmen and locals. The Spazmatics – On Saturday, November 17, The Spazmatics from Los Angeles rocked the Koral Center with an energetic and entertaining performance of cover songs from the 1980’s. Band members included “The Kevin” on vocals, “Ruben” on guitar, “Syd Sonic” on drums and “Mr. Wilkinson” on bass. The concept of the band is a throwback to Revenge of the Nerds, and members comically perform wearing neck braces, bowties, suspenders, pocket protectors, taped glasses and a whole lot of plaid. This special presentation was the first time The Spazmatics have come to Los Cabos and was a breath of fresh air for Cabo locals who are accustomed to the same Cabo nightlife and activities for tourists. The event was sponsored by Boardwalk Productions (who bring us the Los Cabos Open of Surf every June), Koral Shops, Koral Center, Koral Concierge, and El Merkado. The Koral Center is a one stop shop for everything including a shopping plaza, a hotel, business center, medical services, concierge agency, children’s area, spa, and a wide variety of dining options. On Día de Los Reyes Magos, Mexican families come together to celebrate the day of the three wise men and cut a traditional “Rosca de Reyes.” Rosca is a circular shaped bread usually topped with candied fruit which contains a small baby figurine somewhere inside. On this day, each person cuts their own slice of rosca and the person who gets the piece with the baby figurine is then expected to host a party on Día de la Candelaria on February 2. You can purchase your own rosca at any local bakery or grocery store.

The Baja Dogs "Mutt Strut" fashion fundraiser is a fashion runway with adorable dogs available for adoption. The event will take place at R Place on KM 15 Carretera al Norte, El Centenario in La Paz on Sunday, January 13, from 4-7pm. The 11th Annual La Ventana Classic Kitesurf is back! This fundraising competition provides scholarships for local kids and includes kite surfing, SUP, mountain biking and more from January 16-20. This year’s LIGA MAC’s Annual fundraiser will be held on Tuesday, February 5. The gala event funds a large portion of LIGA MAC’s Educational Support program. TS Open Studio Tour

Each February, a community of artists opens the doors to their studios, inviting you to explore down rambling dirt roads and discover what’s hidden behind their walls.
