In this issue we celebrate a magnificent creature that is kind enough to share its waters with us during the months of November through March: The Whale. An encounter with a whale is something magical and it never gets old. Us locals are lucky enough to see whales almost on a daily basis during these months. Some even get to see them from the comfort of their homes! Don't be surprised if you hear someone shout "WHALE!" at any point during your vacation, that means that there is probably one putting on a show right off the shore. We invite you to book a whale watching trip and make sure you keep your eyes peeled since it's quite common to see them, even from your very own hotel room! Also in this issue, we will tell you about the wonderful San José del Cabo Organic Market, that in my opinion, is the perfect place to do something out of the ordinary while visiting Los Cabos. Los Cabos (or “the capes” in Spanish) is located on the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the State Capital. If you take a look at our Baja Sur map, you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful and the winds are stronger. If you go further north along the Pacific side the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez side. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months. The mountains meet the desert and the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pineoak forests. The main climate of the region is arid to semi-arid; however, there are farming areas where the soil is wet, especially on the Pacific side of the Peninsula.

“The aquarium of the world”

is how Jacques Cousteau described the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this "trap" and either stayed in the warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. Ready to explore?

Cabo San Lucas

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo Arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach (the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area), an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

San José del Cabo

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

The Corridor

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this highway you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, and championship golf courses. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, Nationally Protected coral reef that offers outstanding snorkeling and scuba diving. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and those who just want to get away from it all.

La Paz

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waisthighwater at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

Loreto

Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, Banregio, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the streets or marina will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

Dollars are accepted almost everywhere but you will usually get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate posted.

CASH OR CARD?

Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only establishments. Always ask beforehand and carry cash just in case. Keep in mind your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

GROCERIES

In Cabo San Lucas, Walmart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Walmart, La Comer, Chedraui Selecto or Soriana. Mercado Santa Carmelo or California Ranch Market are good options for specialty foods and dietary restrictions. If you need a quick grab, OXXO stores are reasonably priced convenience stores located all over town.

HOW DO I DIAL?

DRIVING

Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway. The cost varies from $63.00 to $75.00 pesos, depending on your destination. ALTO STOP

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa Maria Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are many charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos

Located in La Playa just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in

the area with 200 available slips for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

SNORKELING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkeling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fishattracting rock. This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkeling in the area. This eightfingered coral reef is about a 1.5hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

STAND UP PADDLING

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout while enjoying nature. At Medano Beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.

KITE SURFING

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles.

Lover’s Beach

Have you ever had a dream about flying like Superman or maybe swimming like a dolphin? Dreams can come true in Cabo! The FlyBoard is a device connected and powered by a personal watercraft, which allows propulsion underwater and in the air. Users are connected to the board by wakeboard boots, under which, water pressure provides thrust. A certified trainer controls the power and height and you control all the movement. Available at Medano Beach or in the Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo.

With the desert meeting the Sea of Cortez as a backdrop, there is no doubt why Los Cabos has become a championship golf destination over the years. From Tiger Woods to Nicklaus and Fazio, many of the big names in golf have designed courses on this unique landscape. Many courses offer a reduced rate later in the day during twilight hours. Appropriate golf attire is required on all courses and club rentals are available. Cabo Del Sol Ocean Course - A Jack Nicklaus signature course with six ocean front holes (1.5 miles). Known for its “3 finest finishing holes in golf” the Ocean Course is said to be one of the most difficult yet beautiful courses in the area. 18 holes, 7,075 yards, par 72. Desert Course – Designed by Tom Weiskopf, this course winds through the desert above the Ocean Course and challenges the golfer with risk vs reward type decision-making. www.cabodelsol.com Cabo Real The newly renovated Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed golf course is one of the Corridor’s first championship courses and boasts beautiful views of the Sea of Cortez, elevation changes, and has hosted two PGA Senior Slams. www.questrogolf.com Cabo San Lucas Country Club This course was designed by Roy Dye and is conveniently located outside of Cabo San Lucas and is the only one with views of Land’s End. It has more than 80 bunkers and slightly inclined fairways and one of the longest holes in all of Mexico at 610 yards. www.cabocountry.com Club Campestre San José Make sure you bring your creativity for the greens at Club Campestre, the newest Jack Nicklaus Design in Los Cabos. Just opened in 2016, Rees Jones, the architect and designer of Danzante Bay explains the elevated, island-like 17th hole par 3 “I have no doubt that number 17 will be one of the best holes in the world”. The course winds you through

stunning vistas of the Sea of Cortez, as well as the beautiful mountain range of the Sierra’s. Buggy, ATV, or Jet Ski Rentals There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid Driver’s License. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike, beach cruiser, or joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Just make sure to wear a helmet! Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, back-country ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Parasailing If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat! Wild Wet Fun Water Park Located about 20 minutes from San José, this water park has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms, a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps water on the bystanders below. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at KM 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends. Sol de Mayo Waterfall Located about an hour and a half away from Los Cabos, the Sol de Mayo Oasis is yet another natural beauty of the Southern Baja California region. The hike leads the adventurous to a majestically beautiful oasis where everyone can swim and even dive into the cool, serene waters. Be sure to pack a lunch, and take plenty of water. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. The cost is $6 US per person to access the easy hike to the clear-water falls.

Imagine floating in a turquoise bay with coral colored sand, snorkeling with colorful fish or walking for hundreds of yards in waist-high water, every beach in Southern Baja offers something unique. Here is a list of the "must sea" beaches to help you decide which is the one for you or just visit them all!

Lovers Beach Getting there is an adventure in itself, since it is reachable only by boat, kayak or any other water vessel. The easiest way to get there is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Your captain will cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean (Divorce Beach). This side is very dangerous for swimming, so swim on Lover’s Beach side only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. Tips: On occasion there are a few vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services.

Medano If you’re looking for the action, this is where it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by a lot of souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No gracias.” Water sports are available such as jet skis, parasailing, flyboarding, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and more. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

Chileno Chileno Beach is a very popular location for snorkeling and swimming due to its calm waters. You’ll find tide pools at the left end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. Public restrooms and showers are available, as well as a handicap ramp that takes you right to the beach. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near KM 14 of the main highway. Tips: Snorkeling visibility is often better in the early mornings and you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours. Bring snorkeling gear!

Santa Maria Santa Maria is a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkeling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. However, the beach does have brand new bathrooms and palapas. Location: Traveling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.

Palmilla Palmilla Beach is known for its family friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes and the One&Only Hotel. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at KM 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.

Balandra A stunning bay in La Paz (the State's Capital) that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist-high water that is crystal clear. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock.” You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra! Location: A two hour drive from Cabo San Lucas. Once you're in La Paz, follow the main drag along the boardwalk, pass Costa Baja Resort and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed.

Cerritos Cerritos Beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. You can rent a boogie board or surf board or even take a surf lesson. Location: Exit at KM 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Tips: Come prepared with food, drinks and beach gear. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful, so swim with caution.

Baja Sur’s sportfishing is “a gift that keeps on giving” as 2019 settles in. The striped marlin continues to dazzle with double-digit catch and releases up at the Finger Bank, 50-miles north of Baja’s tip on the Pacific Side. There are few places in the world that can deliver this kind of action this time of year for anglers willing to chase the “bite,” regardless of the location. The acres of bait that gather on the Bank are also attracting other exciting exotics to the area. Dorado, along with yellowfin tuna feeding there, offer a larger target for big blue and black marlin weighing upwards of 500 pounds. Joining the crowd are the wahoo with their mouthful of razorsharp teeth that can slice through the heaviest leaders in a heartbeat, adding another formidable degree of difficulty for anglers although their steaks are so tasty they are worth the effort. The fishing closer to Cabo is also good -- not the huge numbers of billfish that are taken up north, but there are striped marlin, dorado, yellowfin tuna and wahoo to be caught for those who are willing to put their time in. There are some roosterfish and jack crevalle, along with sierra close enough inshore to see the hotels while fishing. Another option? The bottom fishing for yellowtail, grouper, pargo and other rockfish. Up at Puerto Los Cabos, at the Gordo Banks, the North Winds are a factor now and will continue sporadically for several months. Yellowfin tuna, dorado and wahoo are all scarce. Best chances are for a yellowfin tuna or two being landed are near the Iman Bank. Many boats have been lucky to catch one with most success using strips of squid and most of the tuna landed were up to 20 pounds. However, anglers have also been using a combination of caballito and some ballyhoo for bait with some success. Occasional dorado are still being seen along with a few wahoo. The more productive action has been for a variety of

structure species — the most common being the Eastern Pacific bonito, ranging up to 10 pounds, and they strike various lures as well as bait; there’s also red snapper (huachinango), glass eye snapper, baqueta, triggerfish, ocean whitefish, yellow snapper, flag cabrilla and trigger fish. Farther up the coast at East Cape, wind surfers are taking advantage of the persistent north winds that are common this time of year. More mornings than not, windsurfers and anglers stand shoulder-to-shoulder at sunup to decide which group will have the most fun on the water. If it’s windy, the windsurfers prevail. No wind? The fishermen reign supreme, heading out until a wind line appears on the horizon. The catches can be remarkable. There are still a few billfish farther offshore along with dorado, yellowfin tuna and maybe even wahoo. Closer to shore, sierra, roosterfish and skipjack are the fish caught on the surface. Around the rocky points that dot the shoreline, fishing the bottom can produce cabrilla, grouper, snapper and other reef fish. All are great table fare. Muertos Bay is producing some nicer-grade tuna, schoolie dorado, and even a few wahoo. The tuna were surprising up to 30 pounds. Dorado have been smallish with most hovering around 10 pounds, but nice size for the fisherman just looking for some action, especially first timers. Plus there are a good number of tough bonito to give them a tussle. Inshore, the usual species of snapper, jack crevalle, sierra and an occasional big cabrilla round out the catch. In Loreto, typical winter conditions have persisted with a few days lost to windy conditions. However, the sea temps are still warm ensuring that the dorado will remain around for a bit longer until the temps drop allowing anglers to score on live bait (sardina) along the coast in most areas when the winds back off. Shallow-water yellowtail are also on the “hit or miss” menu for those people soaking live bait along the coast. No news from the yellowtail spots that are farther offshore; the upcoming north winds will be the determining factor for those destinations. If the luck of the great winter fishing holds, there should be a super winter bottom- fishing season for yellowtail, pargo and baqueta to put on ice in the coming weeks. Hopefully the summer of 2019 will have this past year's 12-inch dorado returning as 40-pounders! *

e are in the peak months of the whale season here in Baja and for me whales hold a very special place in my heart, because when I visited here for the first time I was walking down the beach at Medano bay and a Gray Whale approached the shoreline and swam next to the beach as I ran trying to keep up with it. It lasted for a few hundred yards and finally it dove deep and left my sight, but not my heart. I knew then I had to call Cabo home. In my years here I’ve had a few other wonderful sightings of whales on boats, kayaks or from the beach. So in this issue of DESTINO Magazine I want to tell you some general facts about whales, and also encourage you to plan a day this vacation for some whale watching.

Whales belong to the order Cetacea, which includes whales, dolphins and porpoises. The word whale comes from the Old English word whael. The closest living relative to whales is the hippopotamus. They diverged about 40 million years ago. Whales are either toothed (Odontoceti) or have baleen (Mysticeti). Toothed whales feed mostly on fish, squid, other whales and marine mammals, and baleen whales mostly on plankton, small fish and crustaceans. A baleen is a comb-like fringe on the upper jaw of the whale used to filter food. Whales are mammals, they produce milk, are warm blooded, have lungs for breathing and some even have small hairs. Whales have a blowhole which they use to breathe, baleen whales have two and toothed whales have one. They have flippers and tail fins called flukes that they use to propel themselves through the water. Most species of whales have a dorsal fin on their back. The toothed whales are the Sperm Whale, the Pygmy Sperm Whale and the Beaked Whales. The baleen whales are the Humpback Whale, Gray Whale, Common Minke Whale, Southern Minke Whale, Bowhead Whale, North Atlantic Right Whale, North Pacific Right Whale, Southern Right Whale, Pygmy Right Whale, Fin Whale, Sei Whale, Bryde’s Whale, Omura’s Whale, Eden’s Whale, and the Blue Whale. The Sperm Whale is the largest toothed predator on Earth. The famous book Moby Dick tells the story of a Sperm Whale and a fisherman. The Blue Whale, a baleen whale, is the largest whale of all. The Blue Whales are the largest animals to have ever lived on Earth. The Fin Whale is the second largest animal on Earth. Indigenous people of the Arctic have traditionally used

So that is a bit of general information about whales, but here in Baja we are lucky to receive each year the beautiful Gray Whales, therefore I would like to list some cool facts about them. Some basic facts about Gray Whales: • • •

They migrate to Baja every year and their round-trip journey can be around 20,000 kilometers. It takes them from five to eight weeks to reach their breeding sites. There are two groups of Pacific Gray Whales, the east and west groups. The Gray Whale spends a few months in the lagoons of Baja mating and giving birth. Some spots are San Ignacio lagoon, Ojo de Liebre and Magdalena Bay. The migration begins around October and finishes about April. They choose these sites due to their warm and calm waters. Tourism is very popular at these spots despite the sometimes cold weather of whale watching. They usually travel in groups of two or three at a speed of about three to five miles per hour, and submerge for about five minutes at a time, or for 15 minutes or longer to feed. Gray Whales can be 15 meters long and weigh 35 tons. They are baleen whales and reach maturity at about eight or nine years old. And the females give birth to one calf about every two years. Newborns can be five meters long and weigh 1,000 kilograms.

This past January 4th was registered the first birth of a baby Gray Whale in Laguna Ojo de Liebre, very near Mulege. One of the main bays or lagoons where mother whales give birth as mentioned above. The baby whale was seen by many tourists and locals and had an approximate weight of 600 kilograms. It is the first birth of an estimated total of more than 1,000 births that are expected from January to March at this spot. And there are more than 120 births expected at Laguna San Ignacio. The baby whales will consume over 200 liters of their mother’s milk per day in order to gain enough weight to make the trip back to the northern sea. I hope you are excited to make this vacation unforgettable by planning some whale watching, either by booking a whale watching tour on a boat in the day time passing by the famous Arch, or hire an adventure outfitter and do a kayaking and snorkeling trip in the Santa Maria bay and Chileno Reef area. Also, maybe rent a car and drive out to the Pacific side and try to observe them from the wonderful beaches there like Cerritos Beach, and top it off with a wonderful sunset viewing. the meat, blubber, baleen, and oil of baleen whales. The life spans of whales can be from 25 to 110 years, but some Bowhead Whales live over 200 years. A Blue Whale can weigh over 150,000 kilograms and be more than 25 meters in length. Gestation period in whales can be from 9 to 18 months and the calf can stay with the mother for up to one year or more. Males usually mate with multiple females every year, but females only mate every two to three years. Calves are regularly born in the spring and summer months. The Humpback Whale is one of the most recognizable due to the large hump on its dorsal fin. The heart of a Blue Whale can weigh as much as 350 kilograms or be the size of a small car. Some whales like the Beaked Whales and Sperm Whales can dive two to three kilometers deep for up to two hours or more. A Humpback Whale’s lungs can hold about 5,000 liters of air. The Sperm Whale also has the largest brain of all animals, weighing up to 10 kilograms. The Bowhead Whale has the most blubber of all whales, some have up to three feet of thickness. And their baleen plates can reach five meters in length. The blubber in whales serves as an energy reserve and insulation. Most whales, especially baleen whales, migrate long distances from their cold-water feeding grounds to warmwater breeding grounds each year. The longest confirmed migration is made by the Humpback Whales that feed in the Antarctic waters and swim north to breed off Colombia and Panama. Some whales can travel as fast as 20 knots per hour. Whales can jump high, or breach, out of the water. Whales also thrust their tails out of the water and slap the water's surface. They also communicate with each other using lyrical sounds and these sounds can be heard for many miles. Humpback Whales and Blue Whales can travel thousands of miles without feeding. Sperm Whales make the loudest sounds. They have been recorded making a noise at 230 decibels. The most complex and beautiful songs that include recognizable sequences of squeaks, grunts, and other sounds are from the male Humpback Whales. The songs have the largest range of frequencies used by whales, ranging from 20-9,000h. Whales are known to teach, learn, cooperate, scheme, and grieve. It is thought that whales sleep with one half of their brain resting while the other half keeps them from drowning and aware of predators.

As Jacques Cousteau once said, "The Sea of Cortez is the world’s aquarium" because of all the marine wonders that can be found in there. First: the astonishing coral reefs, followed by all kinds of colorful fish, mobula rays, sharks and sea turtles. Mexico is also home to 49 species of marine mammals, including, among others eight species of whales. One of the most recognizable and well studied is Megaptera novaeangliae – The Humpback whale. Furthermore, it is one of the best species to observe during whale watching tours. Baja California Sur has the biggest Humpback whale population in the Pacific Ocean. The estimations are that around 10,000 of this magnificent species can be found in Mexican waters during the breeding season, which is between mid-December until mid-April.

These whales migrate here every year all the way from Northern California, Washington, Canada and even Alaska to mate and give birth in warmer waters. It is essential especially for the baby whales, because they do not have enough fat to survive in cold northern waters. Humpbacks can cover the distance of 25,000 kilometers every year, which is one of the longest mammals’ migrations known. Moreover, Humpback whales are famous for the sound they create, as their songs are known to be among the most complex vocalizations in the animal kingdom. Each song consists of several sounds and different tones, with varying amplitude and frequency. Usually the singing lasts 10-20 minutes; however, humpback whales have been observed singing for almost 24 hours with only short breaks for breathing. That is why it is possible to hear the whales with the hydrophone, which is a truly breathtaking experience. As Mexico is a breeding ground, we can admire many different behavioral activities, which cannot be seen in feeding areas further north. You can see Humpbacks slapping their tails, fins and even breaching out of the water. This kind of activity is unique, and typical for this specific species, which makes a Humpback watching spectacular show.

ello everyone, welcome to Cabo! You are arriving at the perfect time! The weather is so nice this time of year that it invites us to be outdoors most of the day. One of my favorite outdoor activities in Los Cabos is the Organic Market in San José del Cabo. It started 16 years ago and has been taking place in the current beautiful location for about 10 years. It is only a few blocks from downtown San José, in the outskirts. Here in DESTINO Magazine you can find it easily within the maps section in the top part (northernmost) of the San José del Cabo map. It happens every Saturday from 9am to 3pm from November to May. I really recommend you visit with your friends, family and loved ones. It is a magical atmosphere that will nourish and sooth your senses. Let me tell you all I can about what you might find there or experience if you decide to check it out. There are games for the kids like knockerball and trampoline, and painting tables too. You will also find face painting. The massage stations under the pretty trees that give shade are very popular. Early in the morning you can partake in yoga or tai chi, at no cost. The market has no entry charge either, and there is ample parking with hospitable attendants. There are also portable outdoor bathrooms available. Within the market grass field there are many tents and trees for shade. The market is great for eating. You will find many delicious things. Like quesadillas, sopes, tostadas, chilaquiles, fresh juices and fruit waters, ceviche, veggie burgers, pizzas, empanadas (turnovers), kombucha in many exotic flavors, chocolate chip cookies, croissants, grain breads, burritos, bagels, baguettes, an amazing zucchini bread, brownies, cinnamon rolls, unique and delicious frozen popsicles, ice cream, key lime pie, traditional Mexican sweets, coffee, waffles, hot dogs and veggie version too, tamales and even pozole. So, you can see eating there is fantastic! You can also buy many food items to take home such as produce like all kinds of lettuce, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, green beans, oranges, grapefruits, guanabana, honey, hibiscus, peppers, carrots, onions, kale, papaya, radish, etc., and also dried and frozen mango. International Artist Day’s Frank Arnold This past year, Cabo’s own Frank Arnold was selected as the International Artist Day’s Featured Artist. The IAD is a driving force in promoting the arts in communities and social programs around the world. Arnold was selected for this year’s celebration, which occurs every October 25th. Arnold resides and works in San José del Cabo for most of the year. As the height of the art season comes to the Historic Gallery District, the Frank Arnold Gallery continues to draw art lovers from near and far. Arnold opens not only his gallery, which TripAdvisor has ranked the number one San José thing to do, but his home and main working studio is open to the public as well. Every Thursday evening is the Art Walk in the Gallery District. Arnold, his wife Carmen, and “Gallery Dog” Picasso, host an open house to visitors that feels more like an art festival or movie premier, as hundreds of people filter in and out the gallery, home, and studio in the span of one evening. The largest gallery in the district, it is also exclusive to Arnold’s work where his unique abstract/figurative style is displayed in original oil paintings, as well as bronze sculptures he creates in a separate second studio located in Mexico City. There is something for everyone here including signed fine art prints of Arnold’s paintings, posters from his past art shows, and two books by Arnold. His first book, “Frank Arnold Painting and Sculpture,” is in its second printing and tells the story of his life and journey on the way to becoming an internationally celebrated artist, from his earliest memories to the present. His second book, “Your Creative Imagination UNLOCKED,” is a collaborative effort of Arnold with noted depth-psychologist, Dr. Jim Manganiello, exploring methods of self-discovery through abstract art, rediscovering your own creativity to, as Arnold says, “Become who you truly are.” It includes artwork from Arnold, Banksy, Picasso, Rothko, Kandinsky and Twombly. While maintaining his second studio in Mexico City and a third studio and additional gallery space in Central California, Arnold is currently expanding the San José location with the addition of Plaza Frank Arnold, directly across from his gallery. The central focus of the plaza is the heroic scale figure, Alma de Cabo; a bronze sculpture created by Arnold and inspired by the community of San José following Hurricane Odile in 2014. The name translated is “Soul of Cabo”. Arnold’s earlier work is centered on his own life from childhood to present. Each story is told in a personal code devised to be both cathartic and confidential. For the past ten years, his work has come from a deeper mind connection he has found, producing pieces that speak in many voices; some familiar and some unknown, even to Arnold. It is not uncommon for men and women to view his work and become very emotional, some to the point of tears, pouring out feelings and stories from their own lives that have been accessed by his paintings or sculptures. He feels honored and humbled by these reactions to his work and believes that some pieces are not so much an expression of his own experiences, as much as they may hold messages for others to discover. Arnold makes himself as available as possible to the many visitors in his studios and gallery. He is at work in the studio and gallery daily, whether painting, or corresponding with the many visitors who keep in touch from all over the world by email and social media.

items such as fruit preserves and smoked fish too. Plus, many other delicious and healthy things. For shopping there is almost anything you can imagine. You can find handmade cardigans, sweaters, pants, dresses, traditional Mexican clothing, hats, leather masks, paintings, sculptures, plants, jewelry of all types and styles with minerals, stones and precious gems. Also incense, oils, soaps, colloidal silver, t-shirts, fossils, quartz, swimming suits, bikinis, swords, cushions, tiles and even mobiles. The market is the perfect place to find that very special souvenir. Other things that go on at the market are language lessons, educational seminars, special performances, musical guests and open mic sometimes too. A couple of weeks ago I was honored to be invited to present a DJ set alongside great local bands and it was a very fun Saturday with many activities like a Spanish class, a nutritional conference for kids and parents, and also like I mentioned above, a yoga class and tai chi lessons. Furthermore and finally, the Organic Market organizers have a very unique mission. They believe in creating a multi-cultural space that provides local organic produce, prepared food, arts and crafts, activities and educational resources for the community and visitors. They try to promote products and services that originate within the community and reflect the things created and produced in the region. They intend the market to be a place where community members can find local products and produce, as well as a space to meet and interact directly. They emphasize the importance of using low impact packaging for all products. And they believe in promoting the arts like dance and music as one of the creative pillars of the market space. I hope I conveyed a great picture of the Organic Market because it is something that words can`t truly describe. That is why I really recommend you plan a very different and memorable daytime Saturday experience during this vacation to the wonderful San José del Cabo Organic Market. Sterlite chairs and plastic card tables covered with condiments; Mariscos Tres Islas has become a well-known gem on the Cabo San Lucas seafood tour. With authentic culture straight from Mazatlan, Tres Islas claims to bring the taste of the mainland to the south of the Baja for locals and tourists alike. Locally sourced seafood is served daily in a palapa-esque setting that is just under a ten minute walk from Puerto Paraiso and the Cabo San Lucas Marina. Tres Islas is the place in town to order seafood tostadas; a crunchy tortilla with a fresh array of fish, shrimp, crab or octopus. The “tostada especial” tends to be the fan favorite, combining crab meat, chunked shrimp and tender octopus all on one crispy vessel. Seasonal specials rotate as peak freshness is key; this being said, the seafood platter is, hands-down, my favorite dish to split with a party of four or more. Fresh rice and steamed vegetables arrive on a plate as the preface; then comes the monster. Eight butterflied garlic shrimp, grilled spicy garlic tilapia filet, six bacon-wrapped & cheese-stuffed imperial shrimp, two lobster tails, two grilled tuna steaks wrapped in bacon and the house famous deep-fried red snapper. Everything, paired with freshly cooked corn tortillas. Not only was it phenomenally prepared, it was served from prep to table in under 15 minutes. With options ranging from a grilled seafood pasta to cheesecovered fish filet with verde sauce, everything on the menu at Tres Islas is made with the same authenticity that gives the establishment its own rustic “familia” environment. The deep-fried red snapper, or the huachinango, is proudly displayed on a poster inside the entrance. If you only make it there one time, it is an absolute must to split snapper tacos and a banana margarita with a partner. This is yet another one of the highly rated spots on TripAdvisor, and we don’t see it taking any steps backwards in the near future. The tostadas are the proverbial go-to for a lunch trip; the bacon & cheese imperial shrimp from the seafood platter were the highlight of my most recent visit. El arroz fresco y las verduras al vapor llegan en un plato como prefacio y despues viene lo demás: ocho camarones al ajo y mantequilla, un filete de tilapia al ajillo picante, seis camarones imperiales envueltos en tocino y rellenos de queso, dos colas de langosta, dos filetes de atún a la parrilla envueltos en tocino y el famoso pargo rojo frito de la casa. Todo, acompañado de tortillas de maíz recién hechas. No solo se preparó fenomenalmente, sino que tardó menos de 15 minutos en servirse. Con opciones que van desde una pasta de mariscos a la parrilla hasta un filete de pescado cubierto de queso con salsa verde, todo lo que se encuentra en el menú de Tres Islas está hecho con la misma autenticidad que le da al establecimiento su propio ambiente rústico de "familia". El pargo rojo frito ó el huachinango se muestran con orgullo en un cartel dentro de la entrada. Si solo visitas el restaurante una vez, es absolutamente necesario compartir los tacos de pargo y una margarita de plátano con tu acompañante. Este es otro de los lugares mejor calificados en TripAdvisor. New Year’s Eve at OMNIA Los Cabos – OMNIA Los Cabos celebrated

their first New Year’s Eve party since opening in early 2018 with a special performance by Jermaine Dupri! The night started off with a three-hour open bar for guests who purchased this admissions package at Omnia Main Bar and inside Casa Calavera bar. The bars were never overwhelmed, working together harmoniously, and all bar staff remained constant with at least 2 deep, until open bar ended at midnight. As expected, tables came in later, and by midnight, most tables were ready for the New Year countdown. The countdown was kicked off by Jermaine Dupri followed by an illuminous fireworks demonstration at midnight. The 2-minute show kept everyone’s attention as the bright colors decorated the sky. Jermaine Dupri played high-energy beats mixed with some laid-back classics, and the crowd helped celebrate the beginning of 2019 by singing along to his music. @OMNIALosCabos

Destino Los Cabos Holiday Fun Run – Destino Los Cabos and Running Tours Los Cabos presented the first annual Holiday Fun Run benefiting the children of Los Niños del Capitán on December 16. Participants had the choice of running a 3k, 5k or 8k route and received a commemorative bandana and a medal at the finishline. In lieu of an entry fee, runners were asked to bring an unwrapped toy or cash donations. At the end of the day, we raised over $7,600 pesos and a big box of toys for Los Niños del Capitán! We would like to thank everyone who came out for this year’s event, and a very special shout out to our volunteers and supporters: REmexico Real Estate (office/staging area), Carla Brown with CB Photos (photography), Jaime Llaca with Drone in Cabo (photography and drone video), Oscar Mendoza (drone photos and video), DJ Daniel Romo, DJ Lalo Cornejo, and DJ Francisco (live music), Alex DJ Cabo Events (finish line towers), Alex Navarro (sound equipment), Ciclovia Recreativa Cabo, and all the wonderful volunteers from Los Niños del Capitán for directing our runners. Santa Paws – Eclectic Array at Flora Farms hosted their annual Santa Paws event benefiting local dog rescues on December 16. People and well-behaved pets were invited to have their photos taken with Santa in exchange for donating pet food, toys, bedding, towels, cleaning supplies, etc. Well-known local pups Powder from Coffee Lab and Sparrow from Eclectic Array were in attendance to accept donations and mingle with guests. Several puppies up for adoption from Acre Dogs also stopped by, hoping to find a “furever” home. There was even a fun hand dyed pet bandana workshop. All donations were divided between El Ranchito, Cabo Critters, Baja Safe, Cabo Kittens, Acre Pups, and Casa Sheila. @MyEclecticArray

Casa Amigos Grand Opening – On December 15, Casa Amigos Mexican BBQ and Sports Bar celebrated their Grand Opening in the building formerly occupied by Desperados. It was a packed house on this Saturday evening with a live band and delicious cocktails. The tasty new menu offers starters like Queso Fundido, Nachos, Tuna Tartar, Buffalo Chicken Drums, and Pulled Pork Sliders. Main course options include BBQ Baby Back Ribs, Slow Cooked Brisket, Short Ribs, Cajun Pork Chop, New York Steak, Surf & Turf, Jumbo Shrimp and more! They also have a taco menu with choice of Shrimp or Fish Tempura, Grilled Chicken, Beef or Pork. Although I didn’t have the opportunity to have dinner at the Grand Opening, I cannot wait to go back and try it for myself. The “Let’s Make Magic” event included a five-star gourmet dinner, cocktail reception, live auction and raffle under a “big top” of sparkling lights. Las Ventanas Al Paraiso resident Magician Sterling dazzled guests, along with jugglers, fire dancers, stilt walkers, and more throughout the cirque themed evening. Sarahuaro provides healthy meals to more than 350 kids each day during the school year as well as providing educational programs for impoverished women. The goal of this magical event was to raise $60,000 USD to support the women and children of the Sarahuaro Foundation.

– A lot of Cabo locals look forward to Cabo’s Annual Santa Pub Crawl each year. Organized by the owners of Sancho’s, guests are invited to bar hop in 30-minute increments all over downtown Cabo wearing red and green outfits, Santa hats, and festive accessories. This year’s crawl started at Cabo Blue Bar, followed by Hooliganz Corner Bar, Jungle Bar, Uno Mas? (where the yearly group photo is always taken), Blind Boar Cabo, Caboys Bar and Grill, Wicked Breakfast Pizza Bar, and Tanga Tanga Sports Bar. The final stop of the day was Sancho’s for a Christmas party, drink specials and live music by Robert Lee.

The Todos Santos Open Studio Tour Wine and Cheese Sneak Peek is a special Fundraiser for Children’s Art Programs on Friday, February 8 from 6pm-8pm at the Palapa Learning Center. The Palapa Society of Todos Santos, A.C., founded in 2003, is a multi-cultural non-profit Mexican Civil Association. Their mission is the development and administration of scholarship, educational, and environmental programs for the benefit of local children and their families. Los Cabos Half Marathon

The Los Cabos Half Marathon is a 21K, 10K, 5K and 3K race starting and finishing at Plaza Mijares in Historical Downtown San José del Cabo, on February 10 at 7am. The 10K and 5K routes are totally flat and designed with families in mind, while the half marathon is more challenging and takes runners into Puerto Los Cabos, across the marina and town of Playita, then back the same route close to the San José Estuary and on to the finish line in the main square. Todos Santos Open Studio Tour

Each February, a community of artists opens the doors to their studios, inviting you to explore down rambling dirt roads and discover what is hiding behind their walls. The experience of visiting an artist’s studio is completely different from viewing their work in the formal setting of a gallery. It’s a chance to connect more intimately with the artist, ask questions, discuss observations, see his or her tools of the trade and even gain insights into the artist’s personal working process.
