Los Cabos (or “the capes” in Spanish) is located on the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the State Capital. If you take a look at our Baja Sur map, you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful and the winds are stronger. If you go further north along the Pacific side the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez side. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months. The mountains meet the desert and the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pineoak forests. The main climate of the region is arid to semi-arid; however, there are farming areas where the soil is wet, especially on the Pacific side of the Peninsula.

“The aquarium of the world”

is how Jacques Cousteau described the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this "trap" and either stayed in the warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. Ready to explore?

Cabo San Lucas

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo Arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach (the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area), an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

San José del Cabo

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

The Corridor

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this highway you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, and championship golf courses. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, Nationally Protected coral reef that offers outstanding snorkeling and scuba diving. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and those who just want to get away from it all.

La Paz

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waisthighwater at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

Loreto

Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, Banregio, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the streets or marina will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

Dollars are accepted almost everywhere but you will usually get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate posted.

CASH OR CARD?

Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only establishments. Always ask beforehand and carry cash just in case. Keep in mind your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

GROCERIES

In Cabo San Lucas, Walmart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Walmart, La Comer, Chedraui Selecto or Soriana. Mercado Santa Carmelo or California Ranch Market are good options for specialty foods and dietary restrictions. If you need a quick grab, OXXO stores are reasonably priced convenience stores located all over town.

HOW DO I DIAL?

DRIVING

Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway. The cost varies from $63.00 to $75.00 pesos, depending on your destination. ALTO STOP

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa Maria Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are many charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos

Located in La Playa just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in

the area with 200 available slips for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

SNORKELING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkeling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fishattracting rock. This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkeling in the area. This eightfingered coral reef is about a 1.5hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

STAND UP PADDLING

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout while enjoying nature. At Medano Beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.

KITE SURFING

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles.

Lover’s Beach

Have you ever had a dream about flying like Superman or maybe swimming like a dolphin? Dreams can come true in Cabo! The FlyBoard is a device connected and powered by a personal watercraft, which allows propulsion underwater and in the air. Users are connected to the board by wakeboard boots, under which, water pressure provides thrust. A certified trainer controls the power and height and you control all the movement. Available at Medano Beach or in the Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo.

With the desert meeting the Sea of Cortez as a backdrop, there is no doubt why Los Cabos has become a championship golf destination over the years. From Tiger Woods to Nicklaus and Fazio, many of the big names in golf have designed courses on this unique landscape. Many courses offer a reduced rate later in the day during twilight hours. Appropriate golf attire is required on all courses and club rentals are available. Cabo Del Sol Ocean Course - A Jack Nicklaus signature course with six ocean front holes (1.5 miles). Known for its “3 finest finishing holes in golf” the Ocean Course is said to be one of the most difficult yet beautiful courses in the area. 18 holes, 7,075 yards, par 72. Desert Course – Designed by Tom Weiskopf, this course winds through the desert above the Ocean Course and challenges the golfer with risk vs reward type decision-making. www.cabodelsol.com Cabo Real The newly renovated Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed golf course is one of the Corridor’s first championship courses and boasts beautiful views of the Sea of Cortez, elevation changes, and has hosted two PGA Senior Slams. www.questrogolf.com Cabo San Lucas Country Club This course was designed by Roy Dye and is conveniently located outside of Cabo San Lucas and is the only one with views of Land’s End. The course winds you through

stunning vistas of the Sea of Cortez, as well as the beautiful mountain range of the Sierra’s. Buggy Tours, ATV/UTV Rentas, and Biking There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fastpaced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid Driver’s License. If pedalpowered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike and taking a riding excursion, or maybe just a beach cruiser and joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Cactuslovers may also want to check out the cactus gardens at Wirikuta,

Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, back-country UTV and ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Jet Skis, Parasailing, Banana Boats and more Go to Medano Beach for a day full of fun water activities. There are numerous options along the beach, such as jet skis, banana boat cruises, aquatic bikes, SUP rentals, and more! Or try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat! Water Parks Wild Canyon Adventures has recently opened its brand new water park section, which you can access with your park day pass, a perfect way to spend a full day of fun family activities. Wild Wet Fun Water Park, located about 30 minutes from San José del Cabo, has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms and a pirate ship. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at KM 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. Turtle Releases Every year, from June through December several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends. Sol de Mayo Waterfall Located about an hour and a half away from Los Cabos, the Sol de Mayo Oasis is yet another natural beauty of the Southern Baja California region. The hike leads the adventurous to a majestically beautiful oasis where everyone can swim and even dive into the cool, serene waters. Be sure to pack a lunch, and take plenty of water. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. The cost is $6 US per person to access the easy hike to the clear-water falls.

Baja Sur has been a popular surfing destination since the ‘50s. The East Cape is popular for kite surfing and the Pacific coast has several surf breaks where you will find less crowds. March through May: This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

The world news seems to be reverberating around sub-zero freezing temperatures in the Eastern United States, along with freezing temperatures and snow on the northern states along the West Coast, with torrential rains and near-freezing temperatures on the southernmost areas of California – all is attributed to an unusual condition called the “Polar Vortex” which has created a double-whammy affecting both coasts of the United States. Here in Baja Sur, the best we can do is keep fishing with a double hookup out in front of the Cabo Falso Lighthouse. It appears the strong currents that are sweeping down the Pacific side from the West Coast of the U.S. are cooling and as the warmer sea temps recede, the large schools of striped marlin keep moving farther south, closer to Baja’s tip. The fishing nearer to Cabo San Lucas is also good -- not the huge numbers of billfish that are being taken up north at the Finger Bank, but striped marlin, dorado, yellowfin tuna and wahoo just waiting to be caught for those who are willing to put in the time. This month, instead of a run of over two hours up the coast, it’s a short distance ... out of the Marina around the corner and 30 minutes later you may find yourself hooked to the catch of a lifetime -- a dorado, yellowfin tuna or wahoo! Just a few miles inside of the Lighthouse, there have been a spot of roosterfish with comb-like dorsal

fins waiting to spice up your fish photo album before you release it back into the ocean. Plus, you might also find yellowtail, sierra or bottom fish such as rockfish, grouper and pargo. There is a variety of bait available at Puerto Los Cabos, although the favored sardina seem to be among the missing and that may have something to do with the recent slow fishing. However, there are some bright spots! A few nice-sized yellowfin -- several in the 100-pound class -- have been found mostly on the Gordo Banks or farther outside some 30- to 40-miles traveling with porpoise schools. Oddly enough, there have also been a few unseasonable sailfish along with some striped marlin up inside the Sea of Cortez, as well as a few wahoo landed in the La Fortuna area, with squid and chihuil being the main bait used, although only an occasional dorado was seen in the mix. More triggerfish and small snapper were spotted, but few cabrilla or amberjack. There were a smaller-sized roosterfish, sierra, and miscellaneous snapper found closer to shore, along with an infrequent stray dorado. Streaky, off-color, cold currents from the north have managed to slow the fishing at East Cape. There were reports of a dozen fleet boats departing one morning and only one boat returning that afternoon with a marlin flag fluttering from the outrigger. The tin boat anglers in their small aluminum boats, by staying closer to shore have been catching yellowtail, sierra mackerel, white bonito and other inshore species before hightailing it back toward shore as the North Wind line chases them home. Sierra, roosterfish and skipjack are the fish being caught on the surface closer to shore. And around the rocky points that dot the shoreline,

fishing the bottom can produce cabrilla, grouper, snapper and other reef fish ... any and all are great table fare! Windy conditions at La Paz and Muertos Bay, normal for this time of year, have been giving visiting anglers pause most days; when the wind subsides, a few of the more courageous anglers have been pleasantly surprised with the results! They’ve found some unexpected warm-water action as a handful of dorado have been popping up. Nothing huge, but it’s surprising to find dorado in the dead of winter, and for first-timers, hooking a 10- to 15-pound leaping dorado is a thrill longremembered. Rounding out their catches, especially on light tackle, with jack crevalle, plenty of fat bonito and cabrilla over the rocks, provided anglers with large numbers of fish stories to tell and retell at dinner. Of course, farther up in the Sea of Cortez, Loreto also had a similar period of varied weather with "varied" results in their fish boxes. Yellowtail and an assortment of bottomfish are being caught off Carmen Island's north tip from the Lobo to the "50 Spot." Along the coastline there were decent results with a combination of live bait (sardina) and trolled, diving hard-bait. The weather should settle down and the usual routine will put half the boats back out at Carmen, but the remainder will be spread out to at least half a dozen other possibilities. Both mackerel and sardina are available for these live bait adventures. The iron and downrigger crowd has yet to swing most fishermen to those techniques ... so far. However, many of the Loreto boats will still be out whale watching, leaving few seeking the 30-pound yellowtail. *

Who's that whale? by A nna Sanc hez, Marine Biologist at Cabo Tre k Every year from 15th December to 15th of April, many tourists all over the world come to Cabo San Lucas to assist the spectacular event of watching the humpback whales in their natural environment. Whale watching platforms can be a fantastic tool not just to enjoy wildlife, also to collect a large amount of scientific data for research. One of the techniques to study those whales is through the photoidentification of the individuals. This consists of obtaining a photograph of the underside of the humpbackâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fluke. This presents a coloration pattern which varies from completely white to completely black, that together with its border, provide the whale with unique characteristics distinctive for each adult individual (as fingerprints in humans). Once those flukes are compared and animals re-sighted, this provides useful information that allows scientist to know more about their population numbers, behaviours, migration patterns, birth rates and much more. The photo-identification of Los Cabos humpback whales is being done and this is one of the reasons why we have an extent knowledge about the whales that are visiting us every year. What is known so far is that the humpback whales that are seen in Cabo during the whale

watching trips, come from northern waters. What photoidentification showed so far is that usually those whales are returning year after year to the same feeding ground. There is an example of a humpback whale seen for the first time in Cabo this year (20th of December) that has been seen in Monterey Bay (California) since 2009 for several years, corroborating this fact. Other sightings also have shown that the whales do not have this much fidelity for the mating and birthing area as Cabo San Lucas is. There are not much re-sighted individuals from one year to the other. Some of the whales seen in Cabo one season, next year are usually seen on a different birthing and mating area. This is the case of the whale called CRC-17037 by www.happywhale.com global database. This individual has been seen for the first time in Cabo this season (December 2018) but two seasons ago was seen in the mating/birthing area of Puerto Vallarta (January 2017). This shows that whale watching activity is not just a way to have fun enjoying wildlife, it is also a very powerful tool to increase the knowledge about the whales surrounding our waters with the aim to preserve them. *

Imagine floating in a turquoise bay with coral colored sand, snorkeling with colorful fish or walking for hundreds of yards in waist-high water, every beach in Southern Baja offers something unique. Here is a list of the "must sea" beaches to help you decide which is the one for you or just visit them all!

Lovers Beach Getting there is an adventure in itself, since it is reachable only by boat, kayak or any other water vessel. The easiest way to get there is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Your captain will cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean (Divorce Beach). This side is very dangerous for swimming, so swim on Lover’s Beach side only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. Tips: On occasion there are a few vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services.

Medano If you’re looking for the action, this is where it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by a lot of souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No gracias.” Water sports are available such as jet skis, parasailing, flyboarding, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and more. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

Chileno Chileno Beach is a very popular location for snorkeling and swimming due to its calm waters. You’ll find tide pools at the left end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. Public restrooms and showers are available, as well as a handicap ramp that takes you right to the beach. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near KM 14 of the main highway. Tips: Snorkeling visibility is often better in the early mornings and you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours. Bring snorkeling gear!

Santa Maria Santa Maria is a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkeling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. However, the beach does have brand new bathrooms and palapas. Location: Traveling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.

Palmilla Palmilla Beach is known for its family friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes and the One&Only Hotel. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at KM 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.

Balandra A stunning bay in La Paz (the State's Capital) that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist-high water that is crystal clear. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock.” You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra! Location: A two hour drive from Cabo San Lucas. Once you're in La Paz, follow the main drag along the boardwalk, pass Costa Baja Resort and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed.

Cerritos Cerritos Beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. You can rent a boogie board or surf board or even take a surf lesson. Location: Exit at KM 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Tips: Come prepared with food, drinks and beach gear. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful, so swim with caution.

ithin the last decade Cabo San Lucas has transformed from the “sleepy little fishing village” at the tip of the Baja peninsula to a luxury vacation destination that attracts global attention every month of the year. Spring Break in Cabo has a different definition to everyone; however the speed of Cabos evolution has progressed past the hay days of partying on Medano Beach. Whales breaching, fish swimming, drinks pouring, music playing and the sun shining; options along each coastline makes for any type of trip to be had. As the spring break crowd usually comes with a “party” connotation, spots like Omnia Day Club, Squid Roe and Mango Deck will never go out of style. Numerous hip-hop artists have performed live at Squid Roe during their “Spring Break Edition” events, leaving downtown awake past 2am on a much more frequent basis that our earlier winter months. Omnia, which is tucked into the back corner of the Vidanta property in San Jose de Cabo, is a one-of-a-kind experience you’ll find cultivating college kids and party-goes alike for a day-long festival of drinks and club music while in the pool. Pushing to please the younger crowd is a theme that areas of business are following down here, but fear of Cabo becoming “too big” can be shunned simply by the geographic limitations of the area. With only so much space and receding coastlines, undeveloped and unpurchased beachfront property is a thing of the past. Cabo’s demographical shift, making a move towards big-money clients, has been forcefully imposed as companies like Amazon and

EBay have had their hands in the purchasing and development of properties in very recent years. With over 20 golf courses, and an almost identical number of private vs. commercial aircraft landings each day, this west coast/celebrity playground has undoubtedly surpassed all other “South of the border” vacation options. High-end culinary and lodging options are popping up every month, but the taco carts and smoothie bars have no signs of leaving the area any time soon. The blend of luxury and cultural grit is what adds a unique flare of attraction to lure travelers from across the world to this remote stretch of beach-front land. Thursday evenings spent at the Art Walk in San Jose will provide a much more relaxed atmosphere during the Spring Break months. On a weekly basis you will find restaurants open with luring dinner specials, street performers for entertainment and local artists displaying their newest levels of creativity while the scent of cinnamon-sugar churros fills the square. The San Jose Organic Market has a gathering of nearly 100 vendors selling baked goods and homemade tamales every Saturday until 1 pm. Although there won’t be any jungle juice poured at these events, both shut down during the hotter summer months later in the year. Capitalizing on timing will get you out of the club scene and back to a relaxing trip of culture and fun for half the day. Aquatic attractions have always been a major draw for Cabo’s fan base. As the most abundant area for water-dwelling species in North America, touching the sea is practically a must when coming for a week (or more) of fun. Whale shark activity is at its’ peak in La

Cabo’s downtown nightlife hasn’t made its way there yet. With names like J. W. Marriott and Ritz Carlton starting projects on the way to this part of our area, we can only assume the quainter spots will show signs of major growth in the very near future. Up the West coast from Cabo sit a few little towns that line the way to the Baja’s capital of La Paz. Cerritos beach, a local favorite, is one of the few spots in the area that allows for 24/7 access to rolling waves, with no rocks to tamper the enjoyment. Boogie boards for rent and local surfers teaching lessons, this is one of our favorite places for a true “beach day” to be had. A bit further you will find Pescadero, home to Baja Beans (who provides some of the best coffee on this side of the border) and Carlito’s Place (featured in on pg. 32). The last stop before the longest leg of a trek to La Paz brings you to Todos Santos. With structures still standing from its origination in 1723, the location that lays claim to the famous “Hotel California” has art, jewelry and leather vendors galore. With fresh food in abundance, foodies alike never leave hungry as it features Jazzamango, a top 10 acclaimed restaurant in the Baja that presents farm-to-table at an all new level for this little oasis town. Multitudes of Airbnb and VRBO options line the area; fresh meat and produce markets will have your head spinning with options for the perfect dinner on your table each evening. Before heading out make sure to take a pit-stop at Todos Santos Brewing, an Australian owned and operated taproom manned by Liz (one of the owners), serving up some classic bar food favorites like soft pretzels with cheese sauce and hand-cut

fries. Dishing out nearly 20 homemade smallbatch brews on tap at a time, co-owner and brew-master Ted will provide his opinion for those unable to make a decision on the spot. Growlers full of your favorite choice from a flight of 6 taste-sized beers is an absolute must as you head off of the handmade streets and back on the highway. Moving from a population of only 400 in the early 2000s to nearly 6,500 strong in 2019, Todos Santos and its surrounding areas are feeling the expansion on the southernmost tip of the Baja as well. Cabo San Lucas will continue to be a North American spring break tradition for as long as the sun keeps shining here and the snow keeps falling there in March and April. Growth throughout the Baja California Sur has brought many new and unforeseen opportunities to fruition as our “sleepy little fishing village” has transformed to one of the most affluent marinas in the world and the vacation metropolis we see today. Whether you’re here for a week or here for the month, everyone escaping the cold of winter will agree, there’s no better time to vacation than now, and no place better to do it than Cabo. *

Paz during Spring Break; chartered daytrips to go snorkeling with them and the resident sea lions is a great mid-week adventure that is just a short drive away. With the Bisbee’s set annually in October, companies like Pez Gato capitalize on the open waters this time of year to provide all-inclusive snorkeling trips, sunset cruises and whale watching expeditions. All boats through Pez Gato are available for private charters and leave directly out of the Cabo San Lucas Marina. Jet skis, parasails and paddleboards are not for the faint of heart. It’s rare that an hour goes by where beach-goers aren’t enticed by vendors to spice up their day. With options lined across Medano beach, a voyage to Lovers beach is just a twelve minute glassbottom boat ride away. If you come to Cabo but don’t see the famous Arch (Los Arcos), did you really even come at all? Although completely surrounded by water, land dwellers have no fear of boredom. The peak levels of dopamine begin at bungee jumping and skydiving; a bit extreme for most of us but incredible experiences nonetheless as you free fall for over 1 minute before gliding down to land softly among Medano beach. Adventure parks with rappelling and zip-lining are great morning or afternoon activities while hikes up all of the surrounding Sierra de la Laguna mountain ranges will keep the heartrate pumping in the best weather of the year. Not-too-hot, paired with low humidity and a slight breeze keeps the insects to minimum while your tan gets evened by the poolside. Waterparks located in Caduaño, Wild Canyon, San Jose and Cabo offer a happy-medium for the younger crowds joining us during the winter season. Dune buggies and Razors can be taken for a guided afternoon in the great canyons and ancient riverbed canals of the Baja. Camel and horseback riding tours on the beach provide a more relaxing experience while providing the same views as the motorized options (and a bit less covered in dust). A trip to the East Cape will make you feel like you’re in prehistoric times; with no Oxxo for miles, Los Barriles is roughly a two hour drive from Cabo San Lucas. Kitesurfing, ATV trips and scuba diving set the tone for embracing the beauty of the Baja in its finest natural form. Whether you like to conquer the elements above or below the water, you are forced to spend time on yourself on the Gulf side of the BCS because the hustle of

The first week of April 2019, Los Cabos will be buzzing with internationally renowned artists and patrons of the art, in town to experience the phenomenal Gala de Danza dance performance. For the sixth consecutive year, Gala de Danza will bring a rich cultural and artistic experience for the events on April 4-6 at Viceroy Los Cabos in San Jose del Cabo. Since the summer of 2013, Gala de Danza has brought together artists from around the world to help enrich the lives of young dancers and the community. Under the leadership of Gala de Danza founder and former ballerina Christina Lyon, dancers, choreographers and musicians from 20 different countries, have shared their talents in Los Cabos, and continue to return each year for this worldclass performing arts experience. Some of this year’s talented performers include Derek Hough (Emmy Award Winning choreographer, Dancing with the Stars), Sammy Hagar (Grammy Award Winner & Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Legend), David Lomelí (Placido Domingo's protégé and gifted tenor), Jorge Viladoms (concert pianist and GQ's Musician of the Year), Josie Walsh (Artistic Director of BalletRED and Joffrey Ballet School Los Angeles & San Francisco), Misty Copeland (principal with American Ballet Theatre), Ekaterina Kondaurova (principal with Mariinsky Ballet), Daniel Ulbricht (principal with New York City Ballet), Yulia Zagoruychenko & Riccardo Cocchi (Six-Time World Latin Ballroom Champions) and Youth America Grand Prix finalists, just to name a few. The Gala is not only intended to thrill ticket-holders who attend the events at Viceroy Los Cabo, but throughout the year Gala de Danza is dedicated to improving the

lives of talented youth in the community through a partnership with local studio Danza Tellez. Known as Danza Que Da Esperanza, this program offers scholarships that include academic and artistic training for talented children from underserved communities in Baja California Sur. This year there are 21 students enrolled. These students receive high-quality dance instruction at Studio Tellez, transportation, meals, academic tutoring, school supplies, and uniforms for both dance and school. Thanks to the vision of Christina Lyon and Lourdes Tellez, these children not only have the opportunity to experience live performing arts by internationally renowned artists – a rarity in Los Cabos; many of them will have the opportunity to perform on stage alongside the ‘super stars’! As each year passes, these young Mexican students have talented peers who have become professional artists to help inspire them. In fact, one of the first students in the Danza Que Da Esperanza program, Andres Zuniga, attended the first Gala performance and courageously stated that he would like to dance in the Gala the next year. This year Andres is dancing in the Gala for the fourth time, as a professional dancer with the New York City Ballet! Every year in this season, many tourists from all over the world come to Cabo to assist to the spectacular event of watching the humpback whales in their natural environment. Whale watching platforms can be a fantastic tool not just to enjoy wildlife, but also to collect scientific data for research. This allows knowing more about the whales, and consequently, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very important tool for their conservation. Even so, whale watching activity has to be done according to good practices, otherwise it can have a negative impact for the whales. Around our waters, evidence of impact on humpback whales and other marine animals such as sea lions and pelicans has been reported. Those animals share their habitat with recreational and commercial activities and show scars caused by entanglements in fishing gear and are at risk to vessel strikes. The whales that are most affected are those close to shore where more fishery efforts takes place. Los Cabos is a birthing and mating area for humpback whales and they are becoming more vulnerable to entanglement in nets. Entanglement can lead to drowning, since trapped animals cannot reach the surface to breathe, laceration and infection caused by heavy ropes biting through the skin, and to starvation because animals towing heavy fishing gear cannot feed effectively. Scientists suggest that over 300,000 marine mammals die annually to fishing entanglement, causing a devastating and long-term conservation impact. This is not the only problem that they face, also, marks of propellers have been seen on sea lions and whales. Cetaceans are capable of reacting to danger quickly, but in certain situations they are less alert, for example when they are sleeping or resting at the surface, feeding, nursing their young or reproducing. When a whale or dolphin is hit by a vessel, they can die instantly or as a consequence from severe injuries that affect their daily life. We have to be extremely careful to not leave fishing gear abandoned in the ocean, reduce vessel speed when they are close to whales and keep a safe distance from them. *

3⁄4 of the way up the West coast highway to Todos Santos from Cabo San Lucas sits Pescadero. A tiny town with huge culinary influences from across the globe. Farm- to-table, luxury acclaimed Baja-grown coffee & organic markets; this pueblito is always a great stop on your way to La Paz. Our trip took us directly into the heart of the town where we found Carlito’s Place, an Asian-inspired seafood bar that is serving oriental favorites to all inhabitants and visitors of the Baja Sur. Since 2008, Carlito himself has been manning the kitchen and grooming his staff to be one of the top competitors in Asian cuisine. His wife, the lead hostess, manages the restaurant as he husband inspires the food. From raw fish & seafood to salt duck, the options on the menu will have alternatives for everyone and their vegetarian friends. Outdoor seating for approximately 50 people leaves for a quaint atmosphere as you are greeted by Taco & King Kong, the resident pups that tower at about 10 inches tall. The seating area has a 360 degree view of the bar, sushi preparation area, and the professional-grade kitchen that Carlito calls home. Uni, commonly known as Sea Urchin, is an oriental delicacy that is either A+ or D-, with very little fluctuation. This being said, Carlito proudly announced to the table upon arrival that Uni was on the special menu that evening. Laid across a raw oyster, the Sea Urchin was flawlessly cleaned and was a great pre-cursor to the meal we had planned. Curried vegetables and the Fried rice special, consisting of chicken, steak, shrimp and Chinese sausage hit the table first. The spice of the vegetables, mixed with the blending flavors of protein laced within the rice was a combo that will cause my return in the near future. The passionfruit and mango margaritas, served in a cactus-esque glass, remind you that your still in Mexico as you enjoy wonton soup that could be sold in any Chinatown across the US and Canada alike. With nothing but great things to say about the establishment, the food is worth the drive. Directional signs and ocean views are you only landmarks while making this trek; we certainly recommend a rental car for tourists looking to explore what the west coast has to offer. None of the restaurants reviewed are ever aware that Destino is attending for research purposes; the results are completely at the mercy of the staff when reviews are collected. ey! Spring Break is here! And if you are reading this, it means you made the right decision because you are here in Los Cabos for some great partying. We all know how popular Cabo San Lucas is for partying and about its reputation worldwide with legendary clubs like Cabo Wabo and so many more. But in this issue, I would like to share a different side of Cabo and tell you all I know about the electronic music scene here. I’ve been DJing since I was young and like most everyone, music has always been magic and medicine for me. I immediately fell in love with electronic beats when I heard them in ’80s pop songs and from groups like Depeche Mode, New Order, and Kraftwerk, and even by Queen's Another One Bites the Dust's kick drum. And then when I went to Europe with my cousin in the ’90s I got captivated by the electronic music scene and music, especially in London and Barcelona, and Greece’s Super Paradise Beach in Mykonos. When I came back it was all I wanted to listen and dance to. And then in 1996 on a wild trip to Miami Beach I bought some vinyl records at Uncle Sam’s Musicafe, came back to Mexico City and played them on my ’80s Technics 1200s turntables. The electronic music scene back then in Mexico City had some awesome bars and clubs and they were always a savior in my search for underground music like house and techno.

Then I arrived to live in Cabo in 1999 and my search for beats began here. I was lucky to find some great places like Blue Room and Aqua Lounge where I had my first residency. Then through the years many wonderful electronic music parties happened in Cabo at many spots like Nikki Beach, Passion Club, Bodyshot, Red Bar, Skyline, El Moro, Mayan Lounge, Freeboard and numerous others. We have had many great festivals, parties and events like Apparitions, AWOL, Cabo Music Fest, Electro Fest, Playa Magica, Desierto Magico, Luna Fest, the memorable Mandarina Fest, and many more too. Also, for many years, very fun outdoor parties like Magik’s famous Full Moon parties and other open air parties like Elevation and Resonance, which I am proud to have produced, have taken place in the amazing beaches, arroyos and mountains of Cabo.

Dance Like Nobody’s Watching, Beatness, Intellichildren, Salt & Pepper, MasBeat and We Are Here Music. If you are into more psy trance and progressive, check the events from Acid Tool. As you can see, we have a healthy electronic music scene that is growing, and we feel very blessed because combined with the beautiful weather and nature of Cabo it makes it very magical. We have been lucky to host innumerable top DJ’s like Paul Oakenfold, Derrick May, Stacey Pullen, Claptone, Lee Foss, Sharam, Roger Sanchez, Phil Weeks, Audiofly, Sharam Jey, Steve Aoki and many many more. And I hope many other great DJ’s that have never been here come someday. Today, Cabos’s electronic music is still growing, and the options are fantastic. Let me tell you about it. There are great spots and parties going on both in San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, as well as La Paz and the Todos Santos area. In Cabo, the go-to places for great electronic music are Cachet Beach Club, especially for their Sunday Funkday, Cock’s Cantina for their Deep Fridays, Mayan Monkey Hostel for their hot weekend pool parties, the newly opened Molly VIP club in the heart of the party strip, the sunny pool parties at Blue Marlin Ibiza, and other new spots are popping-up on a regualar basis. In San José you can’t go home without checking out the lovely Mixology Fusion Bar on Fridays and Saturdays where I had my last residency and will be playing on March 8th. Dalton Gin Bar also has fun house music (except Saturdays), and of course OMNIA is also a cool place to check out where they will have Kaskade for their 1st anniversary. If you are in La Paz, inquire about the Warehouse parties and KraxyBaja Collective. Cabo has great local DJ’s and DJane’s also, too many to list, but any party that you hear about from any local DJ’s will be for sure good times and good music. As well as any event with the top national Mexican DJ’s you don’t want to miss, as we have amazing DJ’s in Mexico, and many are regularly passing by on their tours. The Koral Shops presented Peter Rivera, David Raitt and The Baja Boogie Band for the 2nd time on Saturday, February 9. The upstairs level of El Merkado was packed with patrons clapping and dancing to the rock and roll sounds of the late 60s, 70s and beyond, while enjoying delicious food and drinks from El Merkado vendors. The group came together to perform the hits “I Just Want to Celebrate,” “Born to Wander,” “Get Ready,” “Big Brother,” “Losing You” and more during this fun free public event. Born and raised in Detroit, Peter was the original lead singer and drummer for the band Rare Earth. David is the son of Broadway Star, John Raitt, and the brother of Grammy award winning international artist, Bonnie Raitt and lives part time in Pescadero. L ‘Etape La Paz 2019

The L ‘Etape La Paz 2019 is a cycling race for fans who want to experience the professional cyclists of Le Tour de France. The event takes place on March 30 and 31 on the Malecón in La Paz. The L ‘Etape consists two family friendly cycling routes, a short route (20KM) and a long route (40K), and two more difficult completive routes of either 70KM or 125K.
