As I've seen Cabo grow at an impressive rate in the past few years I have noticed that Cabo now attracts all types of travelers, but I must say that possibly the most common type of groups I see are wedding parties (and bachelor/bachelorette parties, of course!). Los Cabos (“the capes” in Spanish) is located on the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the State Capital. If you take a look at the "The Tip of Southern Baja" map on page 12 you can see that the highways and towns form a loop, which you can easily drive in one day. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful, and the winds are stronger and the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez side. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months.

“The aquarium of the world”

is how Jacques Cousteau described the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this "trap" and either stayed in the warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. In Southern Baja, however, it's not just about the ocean, in this naturally magical place the mountains meet the desert and the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pine-oak forests, and you can find wild mushrooms, wild horses and deer. Ready to explore?

Cabo San Lucas

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo Arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach (the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area), an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

San José del Cabo

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

The Corridor

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this highway you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, and championship golf courses. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, Nationally Protected coral reef that offers outstanding snorkeling and scuba diving. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and those who just want to get away from it all.

La Paz

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waisthighwater at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

Loreto

Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

ATMs

Dollars are accepted almost everywhere but you will usually get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate posted.

The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, Banregio, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the streets or marina will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

CASH OR CARD?

Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only establishments. Always ask beforehand and carry cash just in case. Keep in mind your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

GROCERIES

In Cabo San Lucas, Walmart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Walmart, La Comer, Chedraui Selecto or Soriana. Mercado Santa Carmelo or California Ranch Market are good options for specialty foods and dietary restrictions. If you need a quick grab, OXXO stores are reasonably priced convenience stores located all over town.

HOW DO I DIAL?

DRIVING

Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway. The cost varies from $63.00 to $75.00 pesos, depending on your destination. ALTO STOP

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa Maria Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are many charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos

Located in La Playa just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in

the area with 200 available slips for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

From Tiger Woods to Nicklaus and Fazio, many of the big names in golf have designed courses on this unique landscape. Many courses offer a reduced rate later in the day during twilight hours. Appropriate golf attire is required on all courses and club rentals are available. Cabo Del Sol Ocean Course - A Jack Nicklaus signature course with six ocean front holes (1.5 miles). Known for its “3 finest finishing holes in golf” the Ocean Course is said to be one of the most difficult yet beautiful courses in the area. 18 holes, 7,075 yards, par 72. Desert Course – Designed by Tom Weiskopf, this course winds through the desert above the Ocean Course and challenges the golfer with risk vs reward type decision-making. www.cabodelsol.com Cabo Real The newly renovated Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed golf course is one of the Corridor’s first championship courses and boasts beautiful views of the Sea of Cortez, elevation changes, and has hosted two PGA Senior Slams. www.questrogolf.com Cabo San Lucas Country Club This course was designed by Roy Dye and is conveniently located outside of Cabo San Lucas and is the only one with views of Land’s End. have no doubt that number 17 will be one of the best holes in the world”. The course winds you through stunning vistas of the Sea of Cortez, as well as the beautiful mountain range of the Sierra’s. It’s not uncommon to be playing while whales breach in the Pacific Ocean or fish jump out of the water. Buggy Tours, ATV/UTV Rentas, and Biking There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid Driver’s License. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike and taking a riding excursion, or maybe just a beach cruiser and joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, backcountry UTV and ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are

appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Jet Skis, Parasailing, Banana Boats and more Go to Medano Beach for a day full of fun water activities. There are numerous options along the beach, such as jet skis, banana boat cruises, aquatic bikes, SUP rentals, and more! Water Parks Wild Canyon Adventures has recently opened its brand new water park section, which you can access with your park day pass, a perfect way to spend a full day of fun family activities. Wild Wet Fun Water Park, located about 30 minutes from San José del Cabo, has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms and a pirate ship. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at KM 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. KITE SURFING

SNORKELING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkeling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock. Lover’s Beach

This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkeling in the area. This eight-fingered coral reef is about a 1.5-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles.

B y T hat Baja Guy - Gar y Graham Local and visiting anglers alike are discovering how dazzling billfishing can be here in Cabo San Lucas. There are still double-digit “catch and releases” for those willing to travel at least 50 miles up the Pacific Coast to the Finger Bank. However, although the numbers of billfish seen are astonishing, they are matched by the fuel bill when the boat returns to the Marina. For those who may be a bit more frugal and willing to catch only a couple, they will find enough just outside the harbor a few miles from the Lighthouse out to the Golden Gate and San Jamie Bank. There inshore and offshore action can be only a mile or two apart. It’s not uncommon for one boat to be hooking billfish while another boat in near the shoreline, is catching roosterfish, jack crevalle, skipjack or even sierra, a popular ingredient for ceviche often served as an appetizer in many local restaurants. Another option are the dorado, located only a few miles farther offshore; then even farther out some yellowfin tuna can be found traveling with the bottlenose porpoise. It’s also a great time to spot

some of the gray or blue whales. The seasonal migration has turned the corner following the schools of bait up into the Sea of Cortez. Stripers are reported being spotted off Palmilla and Punta Gorda and as far east as the Gordo Banks. The fleets are reporting solid counts averaging one to two fish per day, with a few boats still reporting multiple fish for their anglers. The dorado counts have been a bit spotty, but the wahoo counts have been up. Yellowfin tuna numbers were also down a bit, perhaps because of fewer boats targeting the tuna as they were almost 30 to 35 miles out. The wahoo were spotted from west of the Lighthouse to the east off Palmilla. Inshore fishing has improved with nice catches of schools of skipjack, along with the sierra and jacks showing from Solmar to El Arco. Roosterfish have had a good showing in the surf from Solmar around the point to the Lighthouse, as well as in the Palmilla area. Yellowtail are also showing up in the most recent counts. The panga fleet at Puertos Los Cabos had some great action just outside the marina jetty where the sardina has been schooling. The sardina were attracting schools of sierra, jack crevalle, and even roosterfish along the beach stretches. Hopefully, these baitfish will remain in the region for the coming months. Other bait options were caballito, chihuil, ballyhoo and slabs of squid. Local pangas were venturing offshore at the Gordo Banks to the Iman Bank, and some were traveling as far north as Vinorama. The most common catch has been the Eastern Pacific bonito and red snapper (mostly smaller fish, but all good eating), striking on yo-yo jigs and various bait. Some red crabs were starting to be seen at times drifting to the surface which could develop into something if they remain. Occasional amberjack or leopard grouper were highlighting the bottom action but with no yellowtail reported. Offshore yellowfin tuna have become very scarce recently with only a very few hooked, and only a handful caught. Those fish that were weighed in were in the 30- to 70-pound class range. However,

recently a few tuna have been spotted feeding on the surface on the Gordo Banks as well as on the Iman Bank. Dorado scattered after the inshore water changed to an off-colored green; a few anglers were lucky enough to find a handful of 15-pound dorado, however. The striped marlin in this area were also very scattered, though every day there were a few seen. Bait schools are more spread out, so the marlin seem not to be congregating on any hot spot. With the climate continuing to warm up as the spring season approaches, we should start to see more gamefish appearing on local grounds. At East Cape, they are shaking off remnants of cooler and rainy weather as the dreaded north winds howl. There are hints of an early spring. However, with only a few boats out fishing, it makes it difficult to get an idea on the action. So, aside from an excellent snapper bite while bottom fishing on the high spots off Buena Vista, there have been some breezing yellowtail spotted, and the sierra and jack continue to make the beach scene interesting for small boaters. Working up the coast, both Muertos and La Ventana have had "hit- or-miss" fishing. The windsurfers and kiteboarders had fun with the continuing winds, but even on the few fishable days, the anglers who went out found it to be slow, even though they did catch some fish. However, there are some quality fish around that seem like they're just waiting to bust loose as winter pulls away. The coming month looks promising. Early, there were some strong winds, but then they have been dropping back quite a bit. That will hopefully kick the fish up again. Up at Loreto, thirty or more boats were fishing in one area, and all were catching yellowtail averaging 20 pounds. Boiling bait, firecrackers and cabrilla were working the surface with the bigger boys down closer to the rocks. All of the boats were hooking the bigger fish but getting them up off the bottom was almost impossible! The yellowtail bite was closer than many of the traditional spots. La Cholla consists of a string of boulders stretching from Coronado’s southern tip to the northwest corner of Carmen. The bloom of blue whales that recently showed up is still thrilling many boatloads of visitors, making this busy season a success! Big yellowtail and big whales make March a “best month” for Loreto. April conditions are a promise to anglers that there will be an early beginning to the Baja Sur fishing season which as usual will offer a few surprises. *

Whale watching is the human activity of encountering whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. The species originally responsible for the development of whale watching was the gray whale. They have a hump and a ridge of sharp bumps along their backs, instead of a dorsal fin. They are a type of baleen whale, which means they filter food from the water through special bristly structures in their mouths. Gray whales stay close to shore and feed in shallow water. They travel 10,000-12,000 miles round trip every year between their winter calving lagoons in the warm waters of Mexico and their summer feeding grounds in the cold Arctic seas. Gray whales are often covered with parasites and other organisms that make their snouts and backs look like a crusty ocean rock. An encounter with a friendly whale is a remarkable experience in Baja California Sur. In many cases a calf visit a tourist skiff with its mother. Tourists pet o rub the whales, and in many cases the whales rub against or lifts the skiff partially out of the water. The presence of one friendly may attract others, so at times tourist skiffs are surrounded by up to twenty curious animals. Althought researchers have noted both gray whale food resources and feeding behavior in the lagoons in Mexico and along the coastal migratory corridor, these areas are not important to the nutritional needs of the population. These whales were once the target of extensive hunting, and by early in the 20th century they were in serious danger of extinction. Nearly hunted to extinction in the past, these gentle giants have made a dramatic comeback. Friendly and engaging, they are often intrigued with humans, swimming right up to our open boats. We may see mothers "showing off" their babies, and our small groups can frequently interact with them at close range. The whales entertain us with breaching and spy- hopping, and we sometimes observe mating behavior as well. When you come with us to Mexico to see them, you'll be forever spoiled for whale watching, because it doesn't get any better than this! Today gray whales are protected by international law, and their numbers have grown. The Eastern North Pacific gray whale population was removed from the endangered species list. Nature enthusiasts shouldn't miss the opportunity to see the majestic gray whale in its natural habitat, off the coast of Mexico.*

Imagine floating in a turquoise bay with coral colored sand, snorkeling with colorful fish or walking for hundreds of yards in waist-high water, every beach in Southern Baja offers something unique. Here is a list of the "must sea" beaches to help you decide which is the one for you or just visit them all!

Lovers Beach Getting there is an adventure in itself, since it is reachable only by boat, kayak or any other water vessel. The easiest way to get there is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Your captain will cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean (Divorce Beach). This side is very dangerous for swimming, so swim on Lover’s Beach side only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. Tips: On occasion there are a few vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services.

Medano If you’re looking for the action, this is where it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by a lot of souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No gracias.” Water sports are available such as jet skis, parasailing, flyboarding, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and more. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

Chileno Chileno Beach is a very popular location for snorkeling and swimming due to its calm waters. You’ll find tide pools at the left end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. Public restrooms and showers are available, as well as a handicap ramp that takes you right to the beach. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near KM 14 of the main highway. Tips: Snorkeling visibility is often better in the early mornings and you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours. Bring snorkeling gear!

Santa Maria Santa Maria is a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkeling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. However, the beach does have brand new bathrooms and palapas. Location: Traveling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.

Palmilla Palmilla Beach is known for its family friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes and the One&Only Hotel. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at KM 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.

Balandra A stunning bay in La Paz (the State's Capital) that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist-high water that is crystal clear. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock.” You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra! Location: A two hour drive from Cabo San Lucas. Once you're in La Paz, follow the main drag along the boardwalk, pass Costa Baja Resort and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed.

Cerritos Cerritos Beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. You can rent a boogie board or surf board or even take a surf lesson. Location: Exit at KM 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Tips: Come prepared with food, drinks and beach gear. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful, so swim with caution.

You can rest assured that you’ll be bringing your wedding guests somewhere safe. While in town, you should exercise the same safety practices that you would at home, or in any other town. For example, don’t accept drinks from strangers, use the buddy system when out at night, especially when drinking, don’t leave your drink unattended, and don’t carry large amounts of cash on you. Aside from these general safety standards of travel, Cabo is a place that you can feel safe and secure. That said, with the many activities like boating, jet skiing, diving, paddle boarding, surfing, and fly boarding available, it’s strongly advised to be extra careful of you and others while in the water. Even swimming in certain places can be dangerous. Ask a local where the best swim spots are before you hop in. And definitely, definitely apply sunblock!

Make sure you arrive with enough time before your treatment so you can enjoy the many other amenities that the wet areas have to offer, such as jet massaging beds inside the pools, several water pressure features, a sauna and steam room, hot and cold jacuzzis, an outdoor sun room, and thermal beds where you can lay and get lost in the reflections of light on the walls and ceiling that bounce off the water. The treatment: Velo de Novia (Bridal Veil) - The goal of this treatment is to leave you glowing for the BIG DAY. It begins with an energy cleansing ritual and a feet exfoliation with Himalayan salt, rose petals and jasmine, then followed by a full body exfoliation made of organic coconut, rose petals and sea salt. The mix is sprinkled on your body with a Lomi Lomi technique, and the feeling of the granules falling on your skin is incredibly soothing. After the exfoliation, you're covered in a warm body wrap and are given an Ayurvedic face massage and after a scalp massage with amethyst oil. You are then invited rinse off in the in-room shower, followed by a massage – which incorporates hot stones – given with a shea butter, coconut and cucumber mask. Sailing - Head out from Cabo San Lucas Marina or Puerto Los Cabos Marina and enjoy a wonderful day sailing where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. Some stops for snorkeling at Santa Maria Bay or Chileno Reef will be the perfect addition to your sailing adventure. Fishing - As you know, the fishing here in Cabo is amazing. One of the cool things about fishing trips is that you can check out the famous Cabo Arch on your way. This activity has got to be one of the best for a few reasons. First, you get to go out deep into nature in the beautiful ocean waters while enjoying a wonderful time with your loved ones on a nice boat and having some refreshing beverages and delicious food. And by the end of the day you have probably caught a fish to have some fresh sashimi or a great fish plate for diner. Atvs - Go off roading into Baja’s canyons and sand trails. Just a few minutes from Cabo San Lucas or San Jose de Cabo are many Atv and buggy opera-

tors that run the most exhilarating tours. All kinds of terrain can be encountered so it is a great way to go into Baja’s wonderful nature with your fiancé, family and friends. Jet skiing - Checking out the Arch is something that everybody has to do while visiting Cabo. So renting a jet ski at Medano Bay might be your ideal way to do it, and the most fun too. Zip lining is surely also one of the best ways to check out Baja’s desert landscapes. There are many operators to choose from that offer magical and safe adventures. Snorkeling has got to be one of the all time favorite activities to refresh from the hot sun and sand, and have fun with family and friends. I highly recommend you try it out. We have some amazing snorkeling spots with many species of tropical colorful fish and fascinating coral formations. Some top sites are Neptune's finger in Cabo San Lucas, Santa Maria bay and Chileno reef in the Cabo corridor, and La Sirenita beach in Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park. If you are into scuba diving, that may be for sure the ultimate way to enjoy Cabo´s seas and have a fun time with you’re future husband or wife. Waterfalls and hot springs - Santiago Oasis town is just an hour north from San Jose del Cabo and the famous Fox Canyon waterfalls are just 20 minutes from there. There are also relaxing hot springs in the area, so just ask a local resident of Santiago for directions. This is the perfect outing to do something very different during this special time in Cabo. Sunrise at the Estuary - A wonderful experience

for couples is to visit the San Jose del Cabo estuary to see the sunrise and walk the beach all the way to the mouth of the estuary. The sea will be to your right and the estuary to your left as you face the rising sun. The estuary has a series of mystical calm water channels that are flanked by tall palm trees, and the early morning flight of the birds makes this place a true paradise. Pelicans, ducks, geese, ospreys and many other bird species can be seen enjoying their habitat. Horseback riding - Also great for couples. There are really nice places for horseback riding here, like the beach and desert trails. Sunset boat - There are many options to choose from, some have great dining and drinking, and others offer wonderful night shows and themed performances. But the most amazing thing is that you go past the famous arch which is very beautiful and unforgettable. This is the perfect activity to make your wedding vacation absolutely memorable, especially this time of year in which you might see the last grey whales that are heading north on their way back home. So those are some fun ideas to have an adventurous time during your very special stay in Cabo, but finally I would like to deeply recommend you try to visit the popular Art Walk on Thursdays and the Organic Market on Saturdays, both in San Jose del Cabo; as they are very special events and a great way to spend quality time with your loved ones. The Hangman Surf & Tacos aka El Ahorcado

The ever-famous concept of a protein source that is transported by a tortilla has stood ground as the dominant cultural food staple of the Mexican nation since time began. As you can probably imagine, as locals, we know where to go when it comes to getting the best tacos (for the best price) in town. Starting at 6pm, El Ahorcado is pumping out live music, hot tacos and cold pineapple mix drinks, causing them to quickly become a local’s favorite, since 2013. Trekking from Cabo San Lucas deep into San Jose Del Cabo via highway is more than worth it for this culinary experience. Off of the main highway, near Walmart, a metal framed structure with a hanging man illuminated by a decorative stoplight lets you know you’re in the right place. Upon arrival, you’re greeted by the warm smell of the kitchen and live acoustic music

accompanies the friendly atmosphere. Seats are taken on wooden backed benches at family-sized tables, where fresh salsas and spiced vegetable toppings line the lumber from end to end as they wait for their entrée dates to arrive. Homemade bean soup is a great precursor as you tour the standard issue menu. It’s pretty simple; every taco can be a quesadilla, but not all quesadillas can be tacos. Any questions that arise can be directed to Julio, our go-to waiter who can explain all aspects of the menu on cue. From grilled steak to poblano peppers & corn (rajas), everything that’s coming from the kitchen in a corn or flour tortilla is nothing but a blend of freshness, seasoning and atmosphere. With old barn equipment, metal signs and miscellaneous knickknacks littering the walls and ceiling as decor, dull scenery is the last thing you need to worry when dining at The Hangman. Guitar chords and bongo drums lightly cover the murmur of the crowd as waiters rush from the kitchen every minute to flip tables as fast as they can. Our groups never fail to start a competition of whom can withstand the most habanero salsa as we wait to place our order. With signature drinks to suppress the heat, handcrafted pineapple and strawberry sparkling sodas are a refreshing addition when salt and spice are the stars of the show. Our favorite cocktail, The Ahorcado (convenient enough?) is either a mezcal or tequila over ice, mixed with simple syrup, soda water, and freshly grilled pineapple. Served with a long spoon to provide aid in reaching the crushed Pina on the floor of the cup will have you ordering round 2 as you fish through the ice for the last one. As per our most recent trip to The Hangman Surf and Tacos, a new menu favorite took gold. One queso fundido cheese plate, topped with any choice of 3 different taco stuffers, provided enough “quesadillas” for two people to be completely content if they were to share it as a meal. Corn tortillas, the Hispanic specialty, were the preference of the crowd as we enjoy melted cheese with flank steak, chorizo, peppers, mushrooms, pork and artichoke melted in. What causes cancer? How do we improve our chances of catching it early and treating it successfully? These are questions that every country is trying to answer. Especially in Mexico where malignant tumors are the third leading cause of death, resulting over 84,000 deaths in 2017. The International Community Foundation (ICF) has been working to improve cancer treatment in Baja California Sur (BCS) for nearly a decade. In 2007, ICF invited representatives from the St. Jude International Outreach Program to explore the development and implementation of a much-needed Pediatric Oncology ward at the public hospital in La Paz. Since that initial visit, a partnership was formed with St. Jude, Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego, UCSD, and several local organizations, and ICF has granted approximately $200,000 to support staff training and needed resources to provide the highest quality of care and services for these young patients and their families. In recent years, local partner organizations in BCS have shared their alarm over official statistics and anecdotal evidence of extremely high cancer rates in the state. But as they dug deeper, they realized what was missing – data. After a few years of research and planning, ICF and local partners, including La Paz-based organization Center for Renewable Energy and Environmental Quality (CERCA) and fellow- funder Los Cabos Children’s Foundation, launched a population-based cancer registry, in order to collect demographic, diagnostic, and treatment information. On January 14, 2019, the BCS Cancer Registry, A.C., now an official Mexican nonprofit organization, signed a collaborative agreement with the state’s Secretary of Health, beginning a formal relationship to ensure consistent access to medical records and the ability to inform public health activities and policy. With high quality data on the size and nature of the cancer problem in the state, medical officials and policymakers can take needed actions to improve early detection and treatment, increase prevention efforts, and study possible causes of cancer in the region. ICF is proud of its role as financial supporter, technical advisor, and thought partner for this important new effort and we look forward to learning more about how to combat cancer in Baja California Sur. REPRESENTATIVE SOUTHERN BAJA PLANTS by Alex Navarro

Hello! Welcome to beautiful Baja Sur, a perfect blend of land and sea. This majestic peninsula is a paradise for nature lovers, so I would like to tell you a little bit about some of most representative plants of Baja Sur. Here they are: Pitaya Dulce (Organ Pipe Cactus) - This very easy to spot cactus is famous for its red, spiny fruits which taste delicious, some say similar to a watermelon. It has many (5-35 aprox.) medium sized branches with about 1 inch spines. The flowers are white tipped with light purple and bloom around June. The fruit ripens at the end of summer, and centuries ago this time of year for the natives was a time of euphoria and no hunger, versus other times of the year that were dificult for these tribes due to little food. Today you can find ice cream and other sweets made from pitaya dulce.

Damiana - This is a legendary shrub that grows in rocky hills and granite ridges of Baja Sur. Its flowers bloom from January to June and are yellow/orange, and its fruit tastes a bit like a fig. It has medicinal and aphrodisiac properties, as a diuretic for diabetes or as a sexual stimulant. It is usually taken in tea form and there is a popular sweet liquor made from Damiana too.

Palma Cocotera (Coconut Palm) - This palm along with the Date Palm are the two most common in Baja Sur. The northern limit where they occur is Mulegé Town and are vast at other spots like the estuaries of San Jose, San Pedrito, La Paz and Loreto. The seeds (coconuts) have rich milk inside them and the shell pulp is also consumed. The leaves are used for construction of roofs called "palapas". There are many food trucks in Cabo that sell coconuts on the side of the road, where they give you the milk to drink and also the pulp to eat and you can add salt, chile and lime. Cardón (Elephant Cactus) - This is the large abundant cactus you typically see in the Baja Sur desert. It can reach heights of over 60 feet and be older than 200 years old. Some trunks can be 5 o 6 feet wide. They have a green stem with spines, that cover its woody skeleton, which performs the function of photosynthesis as they have no leaves. From the trunk many lateral branches come out and they have shallow and extensive roots to absorb superficial water from rains. They conserve a lot of water in their stem to survive long periods of time without water. The Cardón’s flowers are white and bloom around May, and its fruit has a succulent pulp which can be green or red, with many black seeds. The Cardón is the home and provider for many animals and insects such as bats, birds, squirrels, iguanas, bees, moths and butterflies. You can sometimes see the holes of woodpeckers and the nests of hawks on them. It is very similar to the Saguaro cactus of Arizona, but it is usually larger, has more branches, and the branches diverge from the lower part of the trunk.

Torote (Elephant Tree) - It can be a 7 foot shrub or an over 25 ft. tall tree. Its resin has a very aromatic smell. There are red and white Torotes and they have very thick trunks and branches. The outer branches are much thinner and the outer layer of bark is peeled off in thin curls of. The small fruits are a favorite of birds, its bark is used for dyeing by locals and the twigs are used for stomach pain tea. Palo de Arco (Trumpet Bush) - It grows very long branches and twigs with yellow trumpet shaped flowers that bloom after the rain. It is usually found on sandy valleys and dry river beds (arroyos). The branches and twigs are bendable and used to make many things like fences, pergolas, furniture and baskets. They are also grown to make natural barriers like fences or walls. It is one of the most colorful plants of the Baja Sur. Choya (Cholla Brincadora) - These are very spiny trees and shrubs that have fleshy spineless fruits. They were called brincadora (jumping) because small sections of the branches detach very easy as their method of reproduction. You can often see them stuck in faces and bodies of cows and donkeys. They have green/red flowers that bloom around May. A person from Baja Sur is called a "choyero". Biznaga (Barrel Cactus) - These can be some of the biggest cacti in the Baja desert. They dont’t have branches but sometimes grow in bunches and branch off at the base. They have very fierce spines, that is why their genus name is ferocactus. Their flowers can be different colors like red, orange, yellow or purple and the fruit is like a berry with thick skin. They are used to make things like biznaga sweet candy (Dulce de biznaga), and were used by indigenous people to cook by removing the pulp and inserting hot stones inside like a pot or oven, as well as using the spines like needles for tattooing. The stem can be eaten for survival purposes due to its high water content. Zalate (Desert Rock fig tree/ wild fig tree) - This is one of the most extreme and beautiful tree in Baja Sur. A seed can grow from a tiny crack on the side of a rocky cliff, and its roots visibly wrap the rock surface making it an amazing tree to observe. The trunks can be massive being several yards wide sometimes, and their thick white branches are smooth with scaly bark and beautiful green leaves. The tiny pear shaped fruits (wild figs/higos silvestres) are not very edible to humans, but many birds and mammals eat them. Thanks a lot for reading Destino Los Cabos and for visiting Cabo. We started our day learning how to make a basic yet tasty margarita. Mini chefs were offered virgin margaritas or jamaica (a non-alcoholic tea made from hibiscus). Next up was classic roasted red salsa that we mixed up in a molcajete. All the ingredients are roasted and prepared before you arrive making it easy to follow along. Red salsa was followed by salsa verde, pico de gallo (aka salsa Mexicana), tropical salsa with pineapple, guacamole, and dessert salsa, all accompanied by bottomless margaritas served by resident Sunset MonaLisa “Intoxicologists”. After we successfully completed our salsas and snacks, staff cleared the dance floor for an introductory salsa dancing lesson. Havana Nights at Nick-San – Nick-San restaurant in Palmilla hosts a Havana Nights themed dinner every Saturday night during high season. For only $700 MXN (roughly $37 USD), guests enjoy a delightful 4-course dinner, a glass of wine, and lively entertainment featuring Cuban singer Rosalia De Cuba, accompanied by a live band, and 7 Latin dancers in a variety of dazzling beaded and ruffled costumes.
