I have very fond memories of my childhood in Cabo San Lucas. Everything was quite different back then, and the entertainment we had was much simpler. The only paved road was the main one and we would ride everywhere in ATVs. The only grocery store and pharmacy in town was Aramburo, and believe it or not, the same Dairy Queen was there. I remember spending long summer days at Chileno or Santa Maria beach, where there were no facilities, no paved roads... no construction. I feel very lucky that I can remember Cabo that way. Cabo has grown, and although my childhood experiences in Los Cabos were magical, it is nice to have some more options these days. Now you have a large amount of activities for families with children of all ages. From adventure and water parks to numerous snorkeling tours and water sport activities, your family will not be bored while vacationing in Los Cabos. VIEW ALL EVENTS IN LOS CABOS

Los Cabos (“the capes” in Spanish) is located on the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the State Capital. If you take a look at the "The Tip of Southern Baja" map on page 12 you can see that the highways and towns form a loop, which you can easily drive in one day. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful, and the winds are stronger and the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez side. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months.

“The aquarium of the world”

is how Jacques Cousteau described the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this "trap" and either stayed in the warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. In Southern Baja, however, it's not just about the ocean, in this naturally magical place the mountains meet the desert and the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pine-oak forests, and you can find wild mushrooms, wild horses and deer. Ready to explore?

Cabo San Lucas

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo Arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach (the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area), an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

San José del Cabo

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

The Corridor

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this highway you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, and championship golf courses. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, Nationally Protected coral reef that offers outstanding snorkeling and scuba diving. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and those who just want to get away from it all.

La Paz

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waisthighwater at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

Loreto

Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

ATMS

Dollars are accepted almost everywhere but you will usually get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate posted.

The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, Banregio, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the streets or marina will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

CASH OR CARD?

Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only establishments. Always ask beforehand and carry cash just in case. Keep in mind your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

GROCERIES

In Cabo San Lucas, Walmart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Walmart, La Comer, Chedraui Selecto or Soriana. Mercado Santa Carmelo or California Ranch Market are good options for specialty foods and dietary restrictions. If you need a quick grab, OXXO stores are reasonably priced convenience stores located all over town.

HOW DO I DIAL?

DRIVING

Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway. The cost varies from $63.00 to $75.00 pesos, depending on your destination. ALTO STOP

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa Maria Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are many charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos

Located in La Playa just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in

the area with 200 available slips for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

Buggy Tours, ATV/UTV Rentas, and Biking There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid Driver’s License. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike and taking a riding excursion, or maybe just a beach cruiser and joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, backcountry UTV and ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are

appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Jet Skis, Parasailing, Banana Boats and more Go to Medano Beach for a day full of fun water activities. There are numerous options along the beach, such as jet skis, banana boat cruises, aquatic bikes, SUP rentals, and more! Or try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat! Water Parks Wild Canyon Adventures has recently opened its brand new water park section, which you can access with your park day pass, a perfect way to spend a full day of fun family activities. Wild Wet Fun Water Park, located about 30 minutes from San José del Cabo, has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms and a pirate ship. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at KM 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. SEASONS June through November: The summer months are known to be the best as the Southern Hemisphere’s swells send great waves to the Pacific, Cabo San Lucas, San José and the East Cape. December through February: East Cape and Costa Azul are on the flatter side. The Pacific can be good this time of year because it’s exposed to the west swell. March through May: This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout while enjoying nature. At Medano Beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.

KITE SURFING SNORKELING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkeling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock. Lover’s Beach

This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkeling in the area. This eight-fingered coral reef is about a 1.5-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles.

Unlike early 2018 when the season predictions were glum as the primary baitfish – sardina – had unaccountably taken a powder and dorado – considered to be the holy grail of Baja sportfishing – had followed suit, 2019 began with almost unbridled optimism. Both locals and visitors predicted that 2019 was going to be a season to remember – one that was fueled basically by “good to WOW!” fishing for two species – striped marlin and LARGE roosterfish – while those good-eating table fish – dorado and tuna – weren’t exactly off the charts. Now, with winter and spring in the rearview mirror and with summer looming, knowledgeable locals and visitors who often frequent the area are predicting a spectacular summer followed with a frantic fall tournament season. In Cabo San Lucas, the action has shifted somewhat. With warmer currents moving up into the Sea of Cortez, most of the billfish are following the warmer water. However, even with the move, the billfish release numbers per boat have continued to reach double-digits, and remarkably for the fleet, they often number in the triple digits. As for those targeting roosterfish, they are still catching plenty. The odd thing is the large number of reports of ‘personal bests’ by both seasoned and inexperienced anglers using either conventional, spinning, or fly tackle. For the “I want something I can eat” crowd, the missing tuna have returned! There are plenty of football- to respectable-sized fish along with a few of

those cow-sized monsters showing up occasionally. Even more good news is that there are more trophysized dorado showing as well, and they are mixed in with the “dinks.” So, when you catch a little one, let it go instead of wasting your five-fish limit. Wait for the larger fish. They are out there this year. There are also plenty of inshore pargo, grouper, cabrilla and still a few yellowtail waiting to be caught. At San Jose del Cabo, the season is just catching up as the billfish and tuna filter in as sea temps rise, and water clarity improves. There has also been an increased number of Almaco jacks on the high spots and pinnacles. These are tough customers, providing anglers a battle to remember, as well as a fantastic main course for dinner. Add plenty of roosterfish, from small to exceptionally large, cruising along the beaches. After a slow start, East Cape is hitting on all cylinders now. Boats leaving early from the hotels are often finding billfish only a few miles offshore, which is evidenced by the many photos posted on social media of jumping fish with the shore and hotels in the background. Farther offshore, the porpoise schools are holding yellowfin tuna up to several hundred pounds. Some better-quality dorado are also mixed in. Inshore, both anglers fishing from boats and those preferring to explore the beaches on foot are scoring roosterfish and jack crevalle as well as some chunky pompano to pull on. For the past several months, Muertos Bay

has been on fire for larger roosters on both fly and conventional tackle. Plus, wahoo and tuna have been in the mix as well as an occasional striped marlin that has been showing up around the pangas close to shore. Another bonus is that both at Muertos and north of La Paz, the larger dorado have reappeared; and as in other locations, the key to success is remembering to release the smaller dorado and keep the larger ones for those fresh fish dinners at your hotel or favorite restaurant. The new Marina Puerto Escondido at Loreto had their grand opening in November. At that time, Enrique Salcedo, MPE manager, announced that they would have their first Robert Ross Big Game Fishing Tournament in May. The event attracted 28 local and visiting teams. Yellowtail and dorado were caught, and more than 100 striped marlin were released during what was considered an excellent first-time event! It has already been scheduled for May 15-17, 2020. During the 4th Annual Gran Torneo de Pesca Gastronomico, in conjunction with Seventh Festival Gastronomico de Almeja Chocolata in Loreto on June 1, 43 teams registered and most found the mother lode of yellowtail. Thirty-one teams made it to the scale before the 3:00 pm deadline with yellowtail weighing in the mid-teens to 32-pounds. One cabrilla tipped the scale at 28 pounds. Locals are predicting - or is it hoping - that the few larger dorado caught recently are a good sign the normal summer dorado bite will build from there, and the larger dorado will stick around. Judging from the recent results, it looks as though this is the year Baja fishing will be easy; but on the other hand, to quote some wise person, “A bad day of fishin’ beats a good day of anything else!” And from my viewpoint, “Any day in Baja is a day spent in paradise.” I’ll see you in Baja. *

THE SOCIAL LIFE OF ORCAS by Katia Silva, Marine Biologist and Guide at Cabo Trek

The Orca is a marine mammal. They are often confused for being a whale because of their name ‘killer whale’, but orcas are actually dolphins. In fact, they are the largest member of the dolphin family. Dolphins and whales are closely related. Orcas were given the name ‘killer whale’ by ancient sailors’ observations of groups of orcas hunting and preying on larger whales such as blue whales. Orcas are excellent hunters that have a wide range of prey. Despite their hunting of other animals, free-ranging killer whales have never been reported killing a human being. They are highly social and group-living animals. But it is important to note, social organization and behaviors vary greatly with hunted prey types and ecology. The main stable unit is a matriline, in which the oldest female (referred to as matriarch) is the leader, accompanied by her daughters and sons and their offspring. Orcas can be found in all oceans and occur in family groups called pods. Three types of pods have been described: Resident pods- remain stable over time; Transient pods- dynamic in structure (are constantly changing); Offshore pods- Are seen only in outer coast waters and not much else is known of them. They are highly intelligent predators with complex social interactions. Each population has its own “culture,” closely tied to its food source, hunting style and communication. Orcas attacking a whale shark was once observed in La Paz. In Cabo San Lucas, we can more often see orcas during the mobula rays season. The transient pods like to eat big marine animals. Orcas have been carrying their dead calves, pushing them with their heads, for more than two weeks. The sad spectacle is a prime example, and confirmation, of the complex emotional lives of these sophisticated cetaceans. Tilikum was estimated to be 36 years old and was kept in captivity for 33 years. The beloved animal passed away just few days after the world's oldest orca died in the wild aged 105. Do you dream of seeing orcas in their natural environments? Don’t get sucked into tourist traps in Dolphinariums, where orcas are confined in featureless tanks and forced to perform tricks. Captivity is no place for orcas or for you. The sheer size, incredible strength and startling intelligence of orcas are simply awe-inspiring. Here is a list of the "must sea" beaches to help you decide which is the one for you or just visit them all!

Lovers Beach Getting there is an adventure in itself, since it is reachable only by boat, kayak or any other water vessel. The easiest way to get there is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Your captain will cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean (Divorce Beach). This side is very dangerous for swimming, so swim on Lover’s Beach side only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. Tips: On occasion there are a few vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services.

Medano If you’re looking for the action, this is where it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by a lot of souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No gracias.” Water sports are available such as jet skis, parasailing, flyboarding, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and more. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

Chileno Chileno Beach is a very popular location for snorkeling and swimming due to its calm waters. You’ll find tide pools at the left end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. Public restrooms and showers are available, as well as a handicap ramp that takes you right to the beach. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near KM 14 of the main highway. Tips: Snorkeling visibility is often better in the early mornings and you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours. Bring snorkeling gear!

Santa Maria Santa Maria is a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkeling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. However, the beach does have brand new bathrooms and palapas. Location: Traveling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.

Palmilla Palmilla Beach is known for its family friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes and the One&Only Hotel. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at KM 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.

Balandra A stunning bay in La Paz (the State's Capital) that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist-high water that is crystal clear. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock.” You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra! Location: A two hour drive from Cabo San Lucas. Once you're in La Paz, follow the main drag along the boardwalk, pass Costa Baja Resort and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed.

Cerritos Cerritos Beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. You can rent a boogie board or surf board or even take a surf lesson. Location: Exit at KM 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Tips: Come prepared with food, drinks and beach gear. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful, so swim with caution.

Scuba Diving - book a scuba diving trip to any of

the amazing sites with one of the numerous outstanding scuba operators. Maybe go to the incredible reef at Cabo Pulmo National Marine Reserve Park where there are many different sites at the various coral reef fingers for all levels of experience. The snorkeling is wonderful at La Sirenita beach at the south end of Cabo Pulmo bay too, and at Los Arbolitos beach which is very nearby. Or, check out the many cool dive sites near the Famous Arch like Neptune’s Finger, Pelican Rock and the Sandfalls. You will encounter a lot wildlife on this trip like all kinds of fish and underwater life, plus pelicans, seagulls and other beautiful sea birds; and also near the Arch you will observe the wonderful sea lion colony. Snorkeling - a super fun and easy thing to do, and Cabo has some fantastic beaches where snorkeling is perfect. Some top options are Chileno Reef, Santa Maria Bay, Pelican Rock and of course Cabo Pulmo and La Sirenita beach.

Ocean Kayaking - some of my recommendations would be to do a trip from Medano Bay to Lover’s Beach, from Santa Maria to Chileno Reef, or from Cabo Pulmo Bay to La Sirenita Beach. In the first trip you can also check out the Arch and snorkel at Pelican Rock. In the second trip you can snorkel at both Chileno and Santa Maria.

And in the Cabo Pulmo kayaking trip you can snorkel at the previously mentioned amazing Sirenita beach. Your concierge will help you book these adventures with the best operators.

Waterfalls and Hot Springs one of my all-time favorite things to do, is to go to Santiago Oasis town just one hour north from San José del Cabo and drive into the mountains to the famous Fox Canyon waterfalls. There are also relaxing hot springs in the area, so just ask a local resident of Santiago the directions. Horseback Riding - there are really nice places for horseback riding in Cabo, like beach and desert trails. This will be an unforgettable activity you can do with your partner or the whole family too. Turtle Release - an amazing and wonderful activity for the whole family! From July to October you can participate during the nesting season (egg laying) of the turtles, and during the hatching season (turtle releasing) from September to December. These activities take place at many different beaches in Cabo and on the Pacific Side too. A great place to find out about turtle release is ASUPMATOMA, A.C. (Southern Baja California Association for the protection of

the environment and sea turtles of Los Cabos) via email at asupmatoma@hotmail.com or call (624) 143-0269. Throughout 23 seasons of work, ASUPMATOMA has protected around 12,000 olive ridley turtle nests, and released to the sea more than 1,000,000 baby turtles. From July to January they have nightly patrols to protect the nesting turtles and to relocate nests to incubation sites to ensure the largest number of offspring turtles make it to the ocean. In Baja Sur, there are five species of sea turtles: the loggerhead turtle and hawksbill which only visit here to eat, the olive ridley turtle which nests here regularly, and the leatherback turtle and the black turtle which nest here irregularly.

Cruise to the Arch aboard the Pez Gato

Bird Watching in the San José Estuary park near the Holiday Inn Hotel and check out this magical place which there are no words to describe. The perfect time is to go at sunrise, and you will be amazed at all the beautiful birds you can watch. There are a few watch towers and you can go into the palm groves or also walk on the beach side. I recommend first the beach side at sunrise and then go inside the palm trees near the parking lot afterwards.

Ride the Zip Lines at Wild Canyon

Cruise to the Arch and Sea Lion Rock - besides kayaking to the arch, also take a boat trip to these sites for a different perspective. Have some delicious food and drinks with any of the great boat companies that run these awesome trips.

Surfing - you can’t go home without doing some surfing in Baja. Here within DESTINO Magazine you can find a list of the local surf breaks. All of them are amazing and range in different types of waves. But for learning to surf, the top beaches are Cerritos Beach on the Pacific Side, and Acapulquito Beach in San José del Cabo. Sailing - head out from Cabo San Lucas Marina or Puerto Los Cabos Marina and enjoy a wonderful day of sailing where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. Some stops for snorkeling at Santa Maria Bay or Chileno Reef are the perfect addition to your sailing adventure. Fishing - as you know, the fishing here in Cabo is amazing. It’s always cool to check out the Arch on your way out to sea. Maybe go out with the whole family or maybe just with the boys. Jet Skiing - renting some jet skis at Medano Bay is also a fun and adventurous way to check out the Arch and sea lions. ATV’s - go off roading with your loved ones into Baja’s canyons and sand trails. Just a few minutes from Cabo San Lucas or San José de Cabo are many ATV and buggy operators that run the most exhilarating tours. All kinds of terrain can be encountered, so it’s a great way to enjoy Baja’s wonderful nature. There are also some operators that run Motocross and Enduro trips too. Zip Lining - for sure one of the best ways to check out Baja’s desert landscapes. There are many operators to choose from, but any of them offer magical and safe adventures. The kids will love it! Parasailing - checking out the Arch while parasailing has got be one of the coolest ways to do it. I would definitely recommend it. There are also tandem rides so you can go up with a family member or couple. Bungee - This vacation is the perfect time for bungee jumping and Cabo’s landscapes will make it even more unforgettable. Also, hammocks, maracas, balero toys, yoyos, Mexican flutes, tequila shot glasses, palm sombreros, Mexican revolution sombrero or Zapata sombrero, sombrero vaquero or cowboy hat, guitars from Paracho, Michoacan, damiana tea and liquor, and traditional Mexican sweets like dulce de mango, guayaba and papaya. There is art and decorations from sea snails, molcajetes or stone salsa grinders, woven baskets, carved wood figurines from Palo fierro wood, Mexican table cloths, all types of clothes and dresses like women blouses called blusa San Antonino, blusa tehuacan, blusa de pajaro, blusa roccoco and blusa tehuana (all from Oaxaca), and Huipil yalala, vestido (dress) San Antonino, vestido halter de telar and pabellones (mosquito bed nets) also from Oaxaca. From Chiapas, vestido de flores and blusa de tres tiras (three stripe blouse) and caminos de mesa which are table center cloths. Within the Art District zone is also the main downtown plaza called Plaza Mijares. Here you will find the church, and in the plaza square many local artists show their works. This is a beautiful area with many benches and trees. Some kids ride bicycles and you see a lot of smiles. At the far end, the tall flagpole with the large Mexican flag stands proud in the square. Around the corner in the same plaza you will spot the clock tower and the statues of some important men of Baja including Manuel Mijares who was a war hero, and from whom the plaza gets its name. Typical Mexican Market - also in San José just a few blocks from the Art District, is the wonderful Municipal Market where during the hours of 7am to 5pm you will find many amazing things. Like fresh seafood and fish, vegetables, ranch cheeses, fresh tortillas, local bee honey, sea salt, piloncillo (raw sugar cane molasses), ranch meats, poultry and regional organic eggs. example, they have the magical piedra pomez (pumice) that is very good for many things like exfoliating and abrasive cleaning, and even in the construction of thermal walls. This famous factory is a very entertaining, interesting, and fun place to visit with the whole family. You can find many accessories, gifts, home decorations like vases, kitchen items, tableware, cups and more, made of artisan hand blow glass. They have over 25 years’ experience manufacturing hand blown glass. You can watch the artisans blow glass, which is a fascinating technique. A multi-sector collaboration is getting to the heart of the matter. For the past five years local Baja California Sur (BCS) nonprofits Corazon del Niño and Amigos de los Niños have joined forces with stateof-the-art H+ Hospital to run a campaign known as “Unidos de Corazón,” which diagnoses and treats cases of congenital heart defects in children from throughout the state. This incredible initiative has already provided life-saving treatments to 70 children, addressing a serious backlog to addressing these conditions in BCS. Evidence shows that when a child with a heart defect grows up without treatment, their conditions gets more complicated until reaching a point when it is not possible to correct, and early death becomes inevitable. Thus making it critical to get to these patients as early as possible. In order to identify suspected cases, a questionnaire is distributed to families of primary school children in all major cities across the state. Then a team made up of pediatricians, nurses, and program staff go on a “heart journey” to evaluate the children with a

suspected problem and determine who requires further diagnosis. Next, a team of specialists in pediatric cardiology ultrasound diagnosis visit to complete the process. These teams consist of some of the best pediatric cardiologists in Mexico, many from the National Institute of Cardiology in Mexico City, offering pro bono services. Patients identified in the “heart journey” are scheduled for open heart surgery, catheterization or ablation procedures in the final stage of the program, a heart clinic held at H+ Hospital in Los Cabos. The hospital provides qualified medical staff, advanced technology, operating rooms, and hospital rooms free of charge to the patients (equivalent to $133,000)! Corazón de Niño commits to $55,000 for each clinic to cover operating expenses, physicians’ travel, and food and lodging for the families of the patients. Amigos de los Niños covers $45,000 of the cost for medical devices and surgical supplies. This year Unidos de Corazon will carry out its 5th clinic, and expects to provide highly specialized cardiac treatments to 20 additional patients. In the late 19th Century, gray whales were hunted to the point of near extinction. The have used lagoons in Baja California Sur for centuries, for both mating and birthing. The lagoons are remote and provide a protected area for the gray whale to reproduce. In March, they start to prepare for the long journey back to the Arctic. Tourists from all over the world come to the Baja lagoons so they can take part in a miracle â&#x20AC;&#x201C; touching fully grown gray whales and their calves. A truly mind-boggling experience, these whales are so friendly. They come up to the boats and roll over on their backs so people can scratch their great stomachs. Their discovery means more than 73 grey whales have been found beached and dead on U.S. and Mexico this year, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Grey whales are currently migrating from their wintering waters near Mexico along the coast up to Alaska, and as they've travelled along their route, more and more carcasses have been washing up on beaches. Dead whales recently examined by the NOAA have been found to be malnourished and emaciated. Grey whales feed on small crustaceans that live in sediment on the ocean floor, which brings them closer to shore than other types of whales. Their proximity to land means they are more likely to wash ashore and for their deaths to be noted. This year were found many skinny whale sightings in comparation with previous years and a weird behavior of going inside the marinas and searching for food. Researchers are taking qualitative data out from well-photographed whales as an indicator of their body condition to analyze this critical situation. It looks like they didn't get enough food last summer and they are just not able to make it all the way to Alaska. There is no direct evidence yet, but it's particularly concerning with the changes in the Arctic ecosystem. Anomalous oceanic conditions have contributed to shifting food sources and cascading extinctions caused by over-fishing, climate change and pollution. The whales can grow up to 45-feet long and weigh as much as 90,000 pounds. They were once in danger of extinction. The population has grown to about 26,000 and they were taken off the Endangered Species List in 1994. Mexico is the only place in the world that this species reproduces and has the docile and curious behavior of approaching the boats. Whales are an indicator species for the health of the oceans. It is necessary to take care of the health of our oceans in order to guarantee future generations the privilege of coexisting with these animals.*

If your memory serves you well, a few months back we provided a culinary review of a locals place by the name of Carlito’s Place, an Asian-fusion spot located in a small town up the west coast of the Baja called Pescadero. Although a small fishing village, the flavors that Pescadero brings out are nonetheless, mighty. This month we are going to circle back to the little farm-totable town in order to share one of my personal favorite spots on the entire Baja Peninsula. For nearly 10 years, Baja Beans has been serving single origin Veracruz, Mexico grown, small batch roasted coffee to the patrons of the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula. Their flavors and level of quality has landed them the capability to be sold at organic retail markets and events, directly out of their location in Pescadero and a partnership with one of the most prestigious residence resorts in the entire Cabo San Lucas area. Owners Alec and April Tidey left Vancouver, Mexico in order to start a new chapter of life in Pescadero. Their café was opened and rapidly became one of the most popular places to visit on a Sunday afternoon as they host events for the local community to sell their art, jewelry, clothes and homegrown foods. Even if you don’t “love” coffee, this place has something for you. A couple items on the menu to note that absolutely will blow your socks off are not only coming from the baristas, but also are on display in a glass encasing next to the register. Their three- berry scone, consisting of blueberries, blackberries and raspberries are crumble-apart melt-in-your mouth delicious that will not only have you finishing it before the coffee arrives but will certainly deserve a take-home one as well. Along this same line, the banana scone, topped with one fresh strawberry slice, pairs greatly with any coffee beverage, hot and cold alike. The cappuccinos have a handcrafted picture via the baristas talents of layering hot milk into swans, hearts and leaves. Ask for Alejandro if he is available, the kid has got some serious handcrafting skills! Black coffee and iced coffees as well are packed with robust, earthy flavors that drive the scents into the air, through the courtyard and into the dirt parking lot just outside the gates. Hot foods like quesadillas and nachos, along with daily specials (such as roasted watermelon ceviche, yum!) are also available for purchase. T-shirts and bags of coffee are also there to not only help with marketing, but to represent and share something so original and special that you will want to bring others back in order for them to experience the same level of pleasure and satisfaction. The mango season is upon us, being July and August the strongest months. Every summer there is an abundance of mangos here, so while you are visiting try to get some mangos for yourself and enjoy this amazing fruit. Let me share some great information on mangos. There are over 400 varieties of mango trees on Earth, and estimates of over one thousand if you add all the hybridization varieties. The mango is classified as a juicy stone fruit and belongs to the genus Mangifera Indica which are mainly tropical fruit trees. This genus belongs to the family of flowering plants Anacardiaceae. The mango is indigenous to India where it has been part of their diet for over 4000 years. It is related to the pistachio, cashew and plum trees. The origin of the word Mango comes from its Sanskrit name which is am, which in turn means provisions, and later there was an adaptation of the Tamil name for the mango fruit, mang-kay. Furthermore, in 1498 during the spice trade between Portugal and Kerala in Malaysia, the English word for mango originated from the Malaysian word manna or manga. The mango first spread from India all through Asia and the far east and then arrived in Acapulco, Mexico in 1775 when the Spanish galleons sailed their trade routes from the Philippines. After arriving in the Pacific coast of Mexico, it arrived one hundred years later in the Gulf of Mexico coast at the port of Veracruz coming from the British Antilles. The mango has been called the king of fruits for many reasons. It accounts for over 35% of the worldwide tropical fruit consumption, the tree can grow over 35 meters tall, bear fruit in 4 years, and keep producing for as long as 50 years or more. There are also mango trees that can be 300 to 400 years old and some specimens still bear fruit. Every summer mango trees bear fruit, but some varieties give double crops. It is also the national fruit of India, Pakistan, and the Philippines and the national tree of Bangladesh. It is said that the Mughal emperor Akbar planted over 100,000 thousand mango trees in Darbhanga, India. The goddess Ambika is always depicted sitting under a mango tree as well as the deity Ganesha is represented with a ripe mango in its hand, symbolizing the potential of attaining perfection. As I mentioned, here in Baja we are blessed to have an abundance of mangos in the summertime. Some varieties include Kent, Ataulfo also known as Manila. We also have mango Manzano, Criollo, Machete, Papayo, Petacon and the outstanding Tempranero de Mayo which is ready early in the season and is small to medium size with a very sweet flavor and strong perfumed smell. I like to eat mangos straight from the tree, but there are many recipes that can be made from them. Here in Cabo some of them are: mango turnovers or â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;â&#x20AC;&#x2122;empanadasâ&#x20AC;?, mango daiquiris or margaritas, mango and fish ceviche, mango jam, mango smoothies, mango ice cream or popsicles, coconut shrimp with mango sauce, mango water, dehydrated or sun dried mangos and many others. Make sure you try to get some mangos this vacation and of course buy a lot of dehydrated mangos, as they will make the perfect souvenir snack to take back home or enjoy on the plane flight back. ne of the most traditional ways to bring a family together is through the sharing of food. Food makes us go home for the holidays, travel the globe to find different flavors and stands as an international language that brings cultures together. Cabo San Lucas has a culinary seen that is rare to Mexico. With blends of every side of the earth, any type of cuisine and level of dining can be found when traveling to the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula. Although considered a luxury resort destination, all levels of budgets can enjoy family dining in Cabo. One of our favorite things about the area is the blend of culture and high-end quality; this clearly translates directly into the dining options all at your convenience. The Marina provides livelihood, fresh fish and an astounding amount for restaurants. One of the go-to spots for a fun experience here is Sancho’s. They serve home cooked bar-esque food, with great appetizers and their famous Pink Tacos. A dyed soft tortilla, lined with beans and cheese encases a hard-shell tacos that comes loaded with “the works” and your choice of fish, chicken or beef. Nacho cheese drizzled on top combined with their homemade hot sauce are picturesque to say the least. Legends Sports Bar on the marina provides crispy hot wings, freshlymade salsa-topped nachos and some of the best onion rings in town. While surrounded by big screens to watch your favorite sports teams go at it, families can gather here to feel a little bit like home in a welcoming environment. The Superbowl is just as big in Cabo as it is in the USA, so make sure to reserve a table if you ever decide to stop in Legends for a cold beer and some great gametime snacks. Depending on where you’re staying, it rarely takes very long to get anywhere

in Cabo San Lucas when you hop in a taxi or use Uber to get around. Most dining establishments can be found on the OpenTable restaurant app, which will allow you to not only make reservations for families and larger groups, but will provide reward points for more dining experiences as well. Downtown Cabo is home to one of the most wholesome, family-owned spots that has been providing freshly cooked chicken, ribs and all the traditional Mexican favorites since 1979. El Pollo de Oro (The Golden Chicken) is located right off of the main street in Cabo San Lucas and is packed all day, every day. The family owned restaurant takes a one month break annually during the summer season and, to the sadness of the town, shuts the restaurant down. Huge portions, monstrous margaritas and a half-a-chicken/half rack of ribs for $8 USD, this place provides that home-away-from-home feeling that every family wants when they sit down to refuel after a fun day of sun, partying and excursions. Alcaravea and Peregrino’s both set the tone with rustic atmosphere and ambiance in downtown Cabo that is unparalleled around the area. Alcaravea provides indoor/outdoor seating and Italtian food that will have you internally debating if you area south of the border or across the Atlantic. The roasted vegetable platter appetizers along with the filet mignon tenderloins in gorgonzola sauce will have forks flying as you fend off family members from stealing pieces of meat. At Peregrinos, good luck getting a table on a weekend night without reservations as every family and their extensions are filling the capacity of the 60 person capacity dining area. With an Italian-ish menu, the smoked octopus is a personal favorite, along with their queso fundido. Anything that comes with their homemade risotto is great to share with your favorite relative. The best way to end an experience here is to order a few Carajillos for the table; make sure to get the first sip because this is a coffee-liqueur mix drink over ice that will most likely not make it in a full loop around the family if being shared. Some other great places to note in the area that are astounding for familydining are Fish Sushi, a raw Japanese experience with fresh fish and great atmosphere. Casa Calavera at Vidanta in San Jose del Cabo combines high-end culinary skills with incredible aesthetics. Chamoya Grill in Cabo with outdoor seating and braised short-ribs that fall off the bone as the plate hits the table. Mariscos Tres Islas, as mentioned by “Where The Locals Eat” in a previous edition of Destino is always primed to throw a couple tables together and pound out fresh seafood tostadas with enough variety for the entire family to pick from. 4th Paellas Festival by Los Cabos Rotary Club – The 4th Paellas Festival took place at the Sheraton Grand Los Cabos, Hacienda del Mar on Saturday, June 8 with more than 500 people in attendance. Teams made up of a head chef, sous chef and host from 16 participating local hotels had 90 minutes to prepare a delicious seafoodbased paella using charcoal, wood, gas, frying pan, pot or casserole. Participants were judged based on cleanliness of their stations, time execution, rice texture, and taste. To keep the competition fair and unbiased, the texture and taste portion of the competition were judged in a blind taste test with judges only having a number corresponding to each paella. This year Destino Los Cabos was honored to have our very own Advertising Executive Ali Lohrman invited as a guest judge! Guests sampled each expertly prepared paella and sipped on wine and cocktails along with a lively salsa dance performance. The event was organized by the Los Cabos Rotary Club and proceeds from tickets sold went to their much deserving Scholarship Program. ME White Party – ME Cabo Hotel held their annual White Party on May 25th at Blue Marlin Ibiza Poolside Beach Club where the dress code is always semi-formal all white attire. The White Party has become the one of the largest and most eagerly anticipated parties of the year for many Cabo locals. Each year the Blue Marlin Ibiza pool is transformed with moody lighting, lively entertainment, a fabulous fireworks show, a photo booth with fun props, and seating for more than 1,000 guests. This year guests danced the night away to music by Brazilian artist Bruno Martini, an international chart-topping DJ with over half a billion plays on Spotify alone. On the evening prior to the event, ME Cabo hosted a lovely evening of signature cocktails, music and art, along with artist Adry del Rocio’s new 3D mural installation inspired by the ocean at their Rose Bar. “Tatei Haramara” meaning “Our Mother Ocean” in Wixarika (Huichol dialect) is part of the new art scene at ME Cabo. Cocktail & Menu Preview with Chef Martín Berasategui – On June 3, Gastro Bar at Paradisus Los Cabos Beach Resort hosted a Cocktail and Menu Preview event with Master Chef Martín Berasategui, who has earned an impressive 10 Michelin stars! The evening included a red carpet and cocktail hour with beautiful live music by Cabo Strings. Following cocktails was a very special one-time only private dinner with Chef Martín Berasategui and 12 talented local and international chefs and oenologists, including Chef Javier Plascencia, Chef Ivan Icra, Enóloga María de Lourdes Martínez, Chef Jorge Alberto Ildefonso, Chef Maribel Alejandra Aldaco, Chef Diego Rubén López, Chef Omar Armas, Chef Pedro Francisco Javier Abascal, Chef Alex Branch, Chef David Hussong, and Chef Marco Carboni.
