Los Cabos (“the capes” in Spanish) is located on the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the State Capital. If you take a look at the "The Tip of Southern Baja" map on page 12 you can see that the highways and towns form a loop, which you can easily drive in one day. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful, and the winds are stronger and the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez side. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months.

“The aquarium of the world”

is how Jacques Cousteau described the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this "trap" and either stayed in the warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. In Southern Baja, however, it's not just about the ocean, in this naturally magical place the mountains meet the desert and the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pine-oak forests, and you can find wild mushrooms, wild horses and deer. Ready to explore?

Cabo San Lucas

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo Arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach (the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area), an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

San José del Cabo

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

The Corridor

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this highway you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, and championship golf courses. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, Nationally Protected coral reef that offers outstanding snorkeling and scuba diving. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and those who just want to get away from it all.

La Paz

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waisthighwater at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

Loreto

Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

ATMS

Dollars are accepted almost everywhere but you will usually get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate posted.

The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, Banregio, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the streets or marina will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

CASH OR CARD?

Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only establishments. Always ask beforehand and carry cash just in case. Keep in mind your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

GROCERIES

In Cabo San Lucas, Walmart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Walmart, La Comer, Chedraui Selecto or Soriana. Mercado Santa Carmelo or California Ranch Market are good options for specialty foods and dietary restrictions. If you need a quick grab, OXXO stores are reasonably priced convenience stores located all over town.

HOW DO I DIAL?

DRIVING

Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway. The cost varies from $63.00 to $75.00 pesos, depending on your destination. ALTO STOP

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa Maria Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are many charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos

the area with 200 available slips for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

Buggy Tours, ATV/UTV Rentas, and Biking There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid Driver’s License. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike and taking a riding excursion, or maybe just a beach cruiser and joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, backcountry UTV and ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are

appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Jet Skis, Parasailing, Banana Boats and more Go to Medano Beach for a day full of fun water activities. There are numerous options along the beach, such as jet skis, banana boat cruises, aquatic bikes, SUP rentals, and more! Or try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat! Water Parks Wild Canyon Adventures has recently opened its brand new water park section, which you can access with your park day pass, a perfect way to spend a full day of fun family activities. Wild Wet Fun Water Park, located about 30 minutes from San José del Cabo, has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms and a pirate ship. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at KM 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. SEASONS June through November: The summer months are known to be the best as the Southern Hemisphere’s swells send great waves to the Pacific, Cabo San Lucas, San José and the East Cape. December through February: East Cape and Costa Azul are on the flatter side. The Pacific can be good this time of year because it’s exposed to the west swell. March through May: This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout while enjoying nature. At Medano Beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.

KITE SURFING SNORKELING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkeling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock. Lover’s Beach

This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkeling in the area. This eight-fingered coral reef is about a 1.5-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles.

SU MM ERTI ME G I AN TS A R R I V E This is the time of year when many anglers’ interests shift gear – the BIGS begin to arrive. The blue and black marlin weighing hundreds of pounds cavorting in the waters surrounding Baja’s tip is a spectacle of nature that will be etched in the memories of observers forever -both anglers and non-fishing tourists who never wet a line will have remarkable stories of these giants when they return home. Watching these huge billfish slashing through schools of 20- to 30-pound yellowfin tuna, anglers realize the YFT would be a catch of

a lifetime for them instead of just another meal for the giants. The enormous yellowfin tuna that find their way to the local waters are no less impressive. They are often referred to as “Volkswagens” because of their massive size and shape; the current International Game Fish record is 425-pounds. Adding to their draw are the many tournaments throughout the summer and fall where thousands of dollars are awarded to the angler who catches the heaviest one. In some cases, the winning checks are in the seemingly mythical MILLIONS! Of course, most of you might enjoy spotting one of the monsters, but prefer to pass it by, wanting to catch something a little less ambitious. One that is scrappy and would be a great fresh fish dinner back at your hotel or favorite restaurant. Well, you are in luck! The season of the “Summertime Giants” isn’t limited to giants. There are plenty of “Popular Giants” as well, biting ferociously throughout the water surrounding Baja Sur. At the top of the class is the bizarre looking roosterfish with its unusual rooster- like comb. Before we go any further, this critter has all the attributes of most Baja gamefish -- a battler for sure. This year’s crop is exceeding expectations in both the quality and quantity categories. Biting lures and bait with equally reckless abandon from Baja’s tip all the way up to Loreto. Don’t miss out on this banner year for

one of the most popular of all gamefish in Baja -- but with one word of advice: Release them! They have no food value at all, which accounts for the increasing number being tagged by many of the local fleets with tags being distributed by GrayFishTag Research. The list of the tasty species is extensive, and only the quantity varies from location to location. Right now, inshore has still been producing good catches for sierra mackerel that are usually considered a winter fish. It is a perfect candidate for ceviche, a Mexican favorite. That’s just one of the many fish being reported by most fleets as summer settles in. Quantity and size will vary in each area. Up at East Cape (Los Barriles) the yellowfin tuna are mostly smaller football-sized fish to a few of the larger variety. Regardless of size, they are great eating. Sashimi, broiled, baked or fried are just a few of the different way they can be prepared. Other popular species that are being caught occasionally are wahoo, though not in big numbers. There are several reasons, first and foremost, they have an impressive mouthful of sharp teeth and are often one of those mystery bites where all that’s left is a piece of the leader. If the crew is at the top of their game, they will have at least one wahooprepared lure in the pattern rigged with wire. FYI: if you happen to catch one, their steaks are one of the most sought-after fresh fish in Baja Sur. Then there are the recent arrivals of the larger dorado, or is it that the dinks are growing up? Being caught are limited numbers from Loreto to the tip, which underscores that it is worth mentioning: Release the small dorado and hold out for the ones that are larger than 10-pounds. Another good eating surface fish that has settled in for the summer are the white bonito, sometimes called “kawa-kawa” in Hawaii. The reefs and rocky pinnacles are producing an impressive list including snapper and cabrilla along with some late season yellowtail and trophy sized Almaco jacks. Throughout the summer into the fall, if you happen to come across a crowd gathered at one of the many scales scattered around the Cabo San Lucas Malecon or on the beaches at Muertos, La Paz or Loreto, you might spend a pleasant afternoon watching the weigh-in festivities some of the big game sportfishing tournaments being held. They are open to the public, and it’s a fun way to be part of the celebration!*

The Sea of Cortez is one of the best places in the world to watch whales and dolphins. Famously called “the world’s aquarium” by oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, the Sea of Cortez is one of the most biologically diverse bodies of water on Earth. The ocean habitat supports superpods of more than 1,000 dolphins, schools of jumping mobula rays, and colonies of sea lions along the coastline. The false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens) is a large member of the dolphin family found in tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate waters worldwide. The name reflects a similarity with the shape of killer whale skulls, but the two species are not closely related genetically. They are often referred to as 'blackfish'. False killer whales are identifiable by their rounded heads, small dorsal fin, and dark gray bodies. They are most closely related to Risso's dolphins and pilot whales, rather than killer whales as their name suggests. Playful and active, these animals are fast swimmers and can frequently be seen surfing the bow waves of vessels. They are highly social, forming strong, lasting bonds and friendships. These spirited dolphins tend to swim energetically in groups of 10 to 40 dolphins, jumping out of the water, performing flips and generally mucking about together. Sometimes they will join with other pods to form superpods of hundreds of individuals. False killer whales mostly eat fish and squid but sometimes they go for other marine mammals, such as smaller dolphins or even humpback and sperm whales, although scientists aren’t sure if they eat them or just kill them to get rid of the competition for food. They eat bigger fish than many other dolphin species, with an appetite for tuna and mahi-mahi, and can consume up to five percent of their own body weight every day. Feeding isn’t a solitary pursuit. They will hunt together and share food between pod members and have even been known to offer food to human divers and snorkelers. These amazing animals were sighted in Cabo San Lucas in June. A pod of about 15 animals were swimming 500 meters from shore. They are extremely vocal and loud. It was possible to hear them talking underwater from the boat. Although no serious conservation concerns exist for the false killer whale, some populations have been, and still are, deliberately hunted. They are also captured for the oceanarium trade and, like many cetaceans, there are incidental deaths associated with the fishing industry. *

Surfing is one of the perfect ways to cool off and refresh from the high temperatures, and for me surfing is one the coolest things to do. Besides cooling off from the hot sand and sun and having a lot of fun, surfing makes your body, mind and soul feel renewed. We have great spots to learn with amazing surf schools and instructors, and radical waves too for the experienced surfer. The Costa Azul area in Cabo is where you want to go to get some surf lessons and also rent a board, and Cerritos beach is the place on the Pacific side to try surfing for the first time. So get away from the heat by catching some cool waves this vacation. Another fantastic way to cool off from the hot weather is to check out the cold pools, waterfalls and streams nearby Santiago town. This area is about 35 minutes north of the San Jose del Cabo airport within the Sierra La Laguna reserve, and its cold pools and waterfalls are absolutely magical. Have lunch there and enjoy a very different experience from the beaches of Cabo. Here within DESTINO Magazine, in the maps section you will find the town of Santiago. safely. One of the main attractions is a bucket that spills 1,000 liters of water in waterfall form helping keep the pool water more cool. You can also enjoy laying out in the sun in the lounge chair area and order from the restaurant. Wagoona also has water slides and a fountain. The other cool thing about Wagoona is that you can visit their Animal Kingdom and sanctuary where all the animals there were rescued and taken care of. You can also cross the famous Canyon Bridge which is the longest vehicle and pedestrian wooden bridge in the world. Maybe also try zip lining which for sure is an out of water adventure that when soaring through the air will cool you down too. I highly recommended you to check out all the experiences at Wild Canyon and Wagoona Splash Island this summer. Last month I wrote a piece on mangos and how it is mango season right now in Cabo, and I left out a couple delicious things that can be made from mangos and cool you off! One is mango water, which is the easiest thing to make. You just have to fill a blender with mango pulp, add ice and water and blend. To make it a bit sweeter you can add bee honey. This is the perfect drink to refresh on these hot days. Another delicious meal with mango that I forgot to mention in the previous issue, is mango with pumpkin seeds. For me this is a great surf food. During mango season, I usually have it before a surf session and it is perfect to have good energy and fuel, and not feel too heavy on the stomach. All I do is slice the mango and pour a lot of seeds on top, and then scoop it with a spoon. Mmm! It is a unique and tasty combination. One last suggestion to cool off this summer vacation is to take a day trip to the Todos Santos area on the Pacific Ocean side. This area is known to have a micro climate which is created by the breezes of the Pacific Ocean and the high mountains of the Sierra La Laguna mountain range which for about a 30-mile distance come very close to the coast. This creates a lot of cool mist which is one of the factors why the area is great for agriculture. The climate varies but it can be 10 degrees Fahrenheit lower than Cabo and San Jose. Check out Pescadero town and Cerritos beach when visiting this area too. Ask about the fantastic farm-to-table restaurants in the area, as Pescadero is known for its wonderful organic farms. Lovers Beach Getting there is an adventure in itself, since it is reachable only by boat, kayak or any other water vessel. The easiest way to get there is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Your captain will cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean (Divorce Beach). This side is very dangerous for swimming, so swim on Lover’s Beach side only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. Tips: On occasion there are a few vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services.

Medano If you’re looking for the action, this is where it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by a lot of souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No gracias.” Water sports are available such as jet skis, parasailing, flyboarding, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and more. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

Chileno Chileno Beach is a very popular location for snorkeling and swimming due to its calm waters. You’ll find tide pools at the left end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. Public restrooms and showers are available, as well as a handicap ramp that takes you right to the beach. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near KM 14 of the main highway. Tips: Snorkeling visibility is often better in the early mornings and you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours. Bring snorkeling gear!

Santa Maria Santa Maria is a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkeling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. However, the beach does have brand new bathrooms and palapas. Location: Traveling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.

Palmilla Palmilla Beach is known for its family friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes and the One&Only Hotel. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at KM 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available.

Balandra A stunning bay in La Paz (the State's Capital) that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist-high water that is crystal clear. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock.” You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra! Location: A two hour drive from Cabo San Lucas. Once you're in La Paz, follow the main drag along the boardwalk, pass Costa Baja Resort and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed.

Cerritos Cerritos Beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. You can rent a boogie board or surf board or even take a surf lesson. Location: Exit at KM 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Tips: Come prepared with food, drinks and beach gear. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful, so swim with caution.

Shark Conservation in the Gulf of CaliforniA by International Community Foundation

When you think about scuba diving in the beautiful waters of the Gulf of California, you imagine swimming alongside an abundance of marine life: adorable sea turtles, colorful parrot fish, playful sea lions, and you hope you get the chance to see a shark. The shark populations in the GOC have declined in the last 30 years due to heavy exploitation by fisheries. The absence of sharks is a clear sign of an unstable and unsustainable ecosystem. Thankfully, the Gulf has many non-profit organizations working diligently to protect its biodiversity. One of those incredible organizations is Pelagios Kakunjá. They have been crucial in the protection and conservation of sharks in the GOC and beyond. Pelagios focuses on the research of shark species in order to generate information for regional management and the implementation of conservation strategies. Most recently, their technical information was instrumental for the creation of the Revillagigedo National Park (approximately 240 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas). Pelagios Kakunja has been key to establishing no-take zones for the effective protection of sharks. Consider donating to Pelagios Kakunja so they can continue collecting the necessary data to create new marine reserves and expand existing ones in the Gulf of California. *

Inside the entrance to Punta Ballena lies a curvy driveway lined with palm trees and foliage, directing your party to the opening of Toro’s phenomenal layout. With a cigar bar, indoor outdoor seating, and a beautiful ocean view, there isn’t a bad seat in the house. With a 4.5-star rating on TripAdvisor, Toro Latin Kitchen & Bar combines local Mexican cuisine, seafood, sushi and Peruvian flare to inspire the kitchen from appetizer to dessert. Richard Sandoval, a critically acclaimed chef and restaurateur has been deemed the “father of modern Mexican cuisine;” it’s proven daily as Toro requires reservations for six out of seven nights of the week. The combination of Pan Latin cuisine combines freshness and robust flavors that bring tourists, locals, businessmen and celebrities all together under the same roof for fine dining. Starting the meal with the freshly-made guacamole topped with baby sea scallops will have the table fighting for the last friend plantain or tortilla chip to clean the bowl. Anything from the Ceviche bar will lighten the mood as daily-caught sea dwellers are prepared with organic juices and the sushi rolls with fresh rice that holds it all together. Crispy soft crab tacos are a great table filler to precursor the meal but if one thing is going to hit your table when you visit Toro, it is the Dry Fideo Northern Mexico Style Octopus dish. Topped with Mexican adobo chorizo, the smell of the spice will rip from the kitchen to your table as the meal is prepared. Crema fresca, a light green sauce and Peruvian criolla sauce allows for the saltiness to subside and lets the freshness erupt when combined onto one fork. ummertime in Cabo; the restaurants are packed, beaches are full and the heat is coming down faster than the tourists. Beating the summer temperature waves can serve as a task, but a few of our favorite places to stop and cool down are just a few miles away. A trip into town while on the hunt for something chilly should lead you straight to a local smoothie/juice bar, El Dengue. Blending fruit, nuts, juice and ice has never seemed so artistic until you view the mountains of fresh fruit that line the shelves on the walls. Cold juices like the Corazón, mix solely the nectars that come from smashing, mashing and straining the fruits. Whereas the smoothies all have a splash of milk added while blending to give it a bit more body. The L.A. is a smoothie combo of peaches, strawberries, assorted nuts and fresh ice that will make all 55 Pesos completely worth it. A dip in the ocean while deciding where to head next is always an option when the heat is just that much. Ocean breeze can’t always save us in Cabo so stop by Medano Beach for some fun, water and maybe even a bit of freshlysliced mango from one of the vendors and their carts! Just off the main drag, across from McDonalds, sits Cantaritos. A small tequila/mezcal bar that is run by Raul, his wife and their tiny companion bardog Coco. Raul makes one of the meanest mix-drinks we’ve ever had, so a

stop here to chill a little is worth it. Mixing all fresh fruit juices that hand squeezed by Raul himself, some Squirt soda and either tequila or mezcal, this combo is a homerun time after time at Cantaritos. Served in a “cantarito”, a small firehardened clay vessel with a huge straw and salt on the rim, this rendition of a margarita entertains no competitors. Fresh ceviche on a hot summer day is no stranger in Mexico; whether its spicy, mild or sweet a seafood cocktail from Gardenias or Tres Islas will have you relaxed in your chair no matter the climate. Gardenias is also home to one of the best Pina Coladas in town; since there is no chance of “getting caught in the rain” in Cabo, kick back with a bowl of crispy-juicy pescado and tostada while crushing a drink under the sanctitude of some ceiling fans. A trip to San José to beat the heat will allow you to surpass the cocos fríos stand at the cabo azul point. Catch some rare ocean breeze while overlooking the surfers down by Zippers as you sip the water from an ice-cold coconut through a straw. A great place to stop and stretch the legs while enjoying a view. Further in San José, Omnia Day Club is always serving fresh drinks and killer beats as they party in all types of weather. The Vidanta property is known for its array of styles all in one place and Casa Calavera, their Mexican restaurant onsite, does not miss the boat. Freshly made guacamole with house-made chips, topped with stone crab is the perfect combo with one of their artisanal margaritas from the bar. Although a bit pricey, this place will provide ambiance, shade, great service and a feeling of relaxation that makes the summer’s heat subside. A day-trip for snorkeling and some jungle juice on any of Pez Gato’s sea adventures can help cut the temperature as the water soaks your skill while searching the earths floor and reefs for sea creatures. A sunset cruise and some hors d’oeuvres keep the rays out of your eyes and lets the cool salty air of the evening take over for a bit of tranquility as the sun subsides. One of the best ways to end a summer evening is with fresh veggies and fish. Koi Sushi, located in the Walmart shopping center can provide both, at great prices and easily accessible, the seafood salad here is a go-to when avoiding summers heatwaves. A mound of fresh lettuce and greens, topped with freshly carved tuna, salmon and the catch-of-the-day will have chopsticks flying while converging on the dish. Ask for their sushi roll specials as there are a couple options that are no longer displayed on the menu, but still available for order. El Orphano, a non-fried fresh-fish roll topped with diced octopus and a tangy red sauce always makes for a great pairing with the seafood salad as well. San Jose, Todos Santos and Cabo San Lucas all have different and unique ways to keep your mind off of the temperature during these few months of the year. No matter how you choose to avoid the summers heat in Cabo, we can all agree that it’s always better than avoiding chores back at home. *

Coco Bongo Grand Opening – Coco Bongo Show & Disco opened with a bang in downtown Cabo San Lucas on the 4th of July! With locations in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Punta Cana, Coco Bongo is known for offering a one-of-a-kind non-stop party that combines elements of Cirque du Soleil, an over the top Las Vegas show, a Broadway musical, a disco, classic movies, favorite musical artists and more. The Cabo Grand Opening was my first time experiencing a Coco Bongo show, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. It turned out to be one of the most fun nights I’ve had in a long time! Ticket prices include regular open bar and the spectacular mini shows that last throughout the night. Los Cabos Open of Surf Re-Imagined –

After six incredible years of the Los Cabos Open of Surf, Boardwalk Productions and the Los Cabos Tourism Board decided to take a one-year break from the traditional Women’s QS and Pro Jr. events to create and celebrate the unique surf culture in Cabo with a one-weekend surf, fashion, food, and music festival which was held at The Cape Hotel and Monuments Beach on June 21-23. This year’s “Soft Top Soiree” included surfers Josh Kerr, Mitch Coleborn, Sage Erickson, Jhony Corzo, Rob Machado, Blair Conklin, Robert Krulick, Ana Laura Gonzalez, and Anastasia Ashley. The waves did not disappoint this year with Josh Kerr taking home the top spot along with $5,000 USD, while Mitch Coleborn came in second winning $2,000 USD. Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore Tournament

The Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore Fishing Tournament returns to Baja on Thursday, August 1 through Sunday, August 4 outside Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort in Los Barriles. Thursday night is the tournament kick off cocktail party, followed by Friday and Saturday fishing days with the shotgun start at 7am, and fishing lines out of the water by 4pm. The weigh station viewing area is open daily on the beach in front of Buena Vista Beach Resort. The tournament concludes with an awards ceremony on Sunday, August 4. Summer Waves Festival featuring Claptone

Internationally renowned German DJ and music producer duo Claptone comes to our state capitol of La Paz for an electrifying summer festival on Friday, August 2. Specializing in house and tech house music, Claptone is known for their mysterious golden masks with long beaks. While the duo usually does solo performances, they sometimes team up to play together. The lineup also includes Sak Noel, Debris, Momis Alanis, and Aceboy. The event will take place at Marea La Paz at the end of Calle Sinaloa from 5pm to 2am. Firehill Trail Race Night Fest

The best trail race series in Baja California Sur returns for its third and most fun of four races this year. This Night Fest race will take place on August 10, followed by Koral Canyon on October 27. Night Fest is a 5K race starting at 8pm, with a music festival atmosphere and music, food, beer, and a big party at the finishline! East Cape Wahoo Gold Cup

The 3rd Annual East Cape Gold Cup Wahoo Jackpot Tournament will take place on Saturday, August 24 from 7am to 4pm. As in previous years, this one-day tournament will have the same format as the Dorado Shoot Out, except the largest wahoo caught will take home the grand prize of a 2019 Volkswagen Gol and a Suzuki 140hp four stroke engine from Agencia Arjona. There will be over $100,000USD in cash and prizes up for grabs this year!
