Los Cabos (“the capes” in Spanish) is located on the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the State Capital. If you take a look at the "The Tip of Southern Baja" map on page 12 you can see that the highways and towns form a loop, which you can easily drive in one day. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful, and the winds are stronger and the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez side. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months.

“The aquarium of the world”
is how Jacques Cousteau described the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this "trap" and either stayed in the warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. In Southern Baja, however, it's not just about the ocean, in this naturally magical place the mountains meet the desert and the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pine-oak forests, and you can find wild mushrooms, wild horses and deer. Ready to explore?

Cabo San Lucas
This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo Arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach (the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area), an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.
San José del Cabo
Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.
The Corridor
The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this highway you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, and championship golf courses. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).
Todos Santos
Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.
East Cape
People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, Nationally Protected coral reef that offers outstanding snorkeling and scuba diving. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and those who just want to get away from it all.
La Paz
La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waisthighwater at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.
Loreto
Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

ATMS
Dollars are accepted almost everywhere but you will usually get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate posted.
The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, Banregio, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the streets or marina will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.
CASH OR CARD?
Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only establishments. Always ask beforehand and carry cash just in case. Keep in mind your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.
GROCERIES
In Cabo San Lucas, Walmart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Walmart, La Comer, Chedraui Selecto or Soriana. Mercado Santa Carmelo or California Ranch Market are good options for specialty foods and dietary restrictions. If you need a quick grab, OXXO stores are reasonably priced convenience stores located all over town.
HOW DO I DIAL?
DRIVING
Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway. The cost varies from $63.00 to $75.00 pesos, depending on your destination. ALTO STOP

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa Maria Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are many charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos
Located in La Playa just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in

the area with 200 available slips for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

Buggy Tours, ATV/UTV Rentas, and Biking There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid Driver’s License. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike and taking a riding excursion, or maybe just a beach cruiser and joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, backcountry UTV and ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are
appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Jet Skis, Parasailing, Banana Boats and more Go to Medano Beach for a day full of fun water activities. There are numerous options along the beach, such as jet skis, banana boat cruises, aquatic bikes, SUP rentals, and more! Or try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat! Water Parks Wild Canyon Adventures has recently opened its brand new water park section, which you can access with your park day pass, a perfect way to spend a full day of fun family activities. Wild Wet Fun Water Park, located about 30 minutes from San José del Cabo, has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms and a pirate ship. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at KM 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. Turtle Releases Every year, from June through December several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends. Sol de Mayo Waterfall Located about an hour and a half away from Los Cabos, the Sol de Mayo Oasis is yet another natural beauty of the Southern Baja California region. The hike leads the adventurous to a majestically beautiful oasis where everyone can swim and even dive into the cool, serene waters. Be sure to pack a lunch, and take plenty of water. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. The cost is $6 US per person to access the easy hike to the clear-water falls.

SEASONS June through November: The summer months are known to be the best as the Southern Hemisphere’s swells send great waves to the Pacific, Cabo San Lucas, San José and the East Cape. December through February: East Cape and Costa Azul are on the flatter side. The Pacific can be good this time of year because it’s exposed to the west swell. March through May: This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.
There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout while enjoying nature. At Medano Beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.
KITE SURFING SNORKELING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkeling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock. Lover’s Beach
This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkeling in the area. This eight-fingered coral reef is about a 1.5-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!
This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles.

For a unique vantage point of Cabo San Lucas, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views while tethered firmly to a speedboat. Trips last around 15 minutes. You can find this activity on Medano beach.

SWIMMING WITH WHALE SHARKS by Alex Navarro
• To swim with whale sharks, it is recommended to know how to use a mask, snorkel and fins, and be a good swimmer. • Good swimmers as young as 8 year old kids and people up to 85 years can enjoy this amazing experience. • Sunblock is allowed only if it is reef-safe. • Underwater cameras are permitted, but with no flashes or lights. Use of drones is prohibited. • Those who don't want to swim can buy a special ticket and enjoy seeing the whale shark from the boat. • Take a sporty swimsuit, a wind breaker, a change of clothes and towel, and expect your shoes to get wet. For phones bring a waterproof bag or ziplock bag. • If you are in La Paz a tour can cost about $70 USD which will include water and sodas, snorkel gear, wetsuit, boat ride, insurance, taxes, and shark conservation bracelet. • You can book a private boat tour for up to 6 people for about $400 USD. • Most tours running out from Los Cabos to La Paz are about $200 USD per person and take about 2 hours of drive time each way. • There are luxurious tours on large boats that can cost over $300 usd per person including transportation, and amenities like chef on board, lounge chairs, etc; and small support boats for approaching and swimming with the whale sharks. • The boat part of a whale shark seeing tour
lasts usually about 2.5 to 3.5 hours. • Tours can be cancelled due to weather or governmental regulations. Once approved into the whale shark feeding zone, it takes approximately from fifteen minutes to an hour to find whale sharks. • The government restricts the number of swimmers in the water with a single whale shark to six. The time limit in the whale shark feeding zone is 2 hours per each group of six swimmers. • Life jackets must be worn at all times • People with respiratory problems, limited mobility, neck or back problems and pregnant mothers are not allowed. • When the captain or crew spots a whale shark, you will be told when to jump in the water. You will jump in the whale shark´s path and swim along with it. Some sessions can be one to three minutes long or longer. Many times you will see them feeding too. • The whale sharks´ nickname is the "gentle giants". This is some basic information I researched on whale sharks and swimming with them. Now I am really very excited about hopefully doing it this season. Maybe I will do a multi day trip and check out Isla Espiritu Santo and Balandra Beach too. These are two great spots near la Paz on my to do list of Baja Adventures. I hope you have great vacation here in Cabo and if you feel like doing something really adventurous and get out of town, maybe swimming with the whale sharks will be the unforgettable choice! *

Welcome to Baja, it is great that you are here during the month of October because it is the beginning of the whale shark season near La Paz. The season ends around May. Going swimming with whale sharks is something I have wanted to do for a long time. My son went with his school last April and they had a wonderful time. There are many great excursions and tours to go see the whale sharks so let me tell you all I have found about these trips and also all I have learned about the whale shark in general: • The whale shark´s scientific name is Rhincodon typus, it is the largest species of fish and they live in all of the world´s tropical seas. • They can weigh up to 20,000 pounds, be over 62 feet long and live over one hundred years. • A whale shark can have over 300 eggs. • They are filter feeders feeding mostly on plankton, krill, and small fish and shrimp. • Whale shark´s mouths can be 5 feet wide and has hundreds of tiny teeth, and 20 filter pads. • A juvenile whale shark can eat up to 50 pounds per day • Their tough dark grey skin has light grey or white spots and stripes which are different in all whale sharks, and they have a white belly. • Touching the whale sharks is prohibited and swimmers must stay approximately 9 feet away from the body and 12 feet away from the tail. • With an average swim speed of 3 mph and their enormous mouths and hundreds of teeth, whale sharks are no danger to swimmers as they are very gentle.

If you are into fun, excitement, money, and sportfishing, you picked the right month to be here. Beginning Oct. 13 and for the next 30 days, Cabo San Lucas will be the undisputed center of the universe for BIG MONEY/BIG FISH tournaments. More than $6,550,925 cash is at stake. All of the events are based out of the IGY Marina, and the weigh-ins of the monster billfish, tuna, dorado, and wahoo take place at different scales. One only has to look for the crowds of spectators to find where the weigh-ins will occur. Many have public registrations with vender booths on the malecon surrounding the marina. Both Bisbee tournaments will be held in front of the Puerto Paraiso Shopping Mall entrance. The Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot has theirs in front of the Hotel Tesoro. 19th Bonnier Los Cabos Billfish Tournament Oct. 13-17: $642,300
19th Bisbee Los Cabos Offshore Tournament Oct. 17-20: $1,165,000 29th Bisbee Black and Blue Tournament Oct. 22-26: $3,693,625 2nd Pelagic Rockstar Tuna Tournament Nov. 1-3: $150,000 21st Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot Tournament Nov. 6-9: $900,000 Total $6,550,925 Judging from the number of black and blue marlin being released recently, plus the cowsized yellowfin tuna weighing over 200-pounds brought to the scale, and the ample number of dorado and wahoo being caught, the weigh-ins should be entertaining. It goes without saying, this 30-day period is a good time to be in Cabo to fish. For the inshore gang, the smaller yellowfin tuna, skipjack, roosterfish, and even jack crevalle all add another dimension to the outstanding beach action for trophy-sized fish. Up in the Sea of Cortez at Loreto, in spite of a little rain, the smaller dorado are dominating the catches – along with limits of reds, pinto bass, and firecracker yellowtail – plus a few smaller roosterfish along the shore. At La Paz, if dorado were the target species, the fall fishing has kicked in. Typical of this time of year, the dorado can be found in numerous areas around Cerralvo Island, Espirito Santo Island, Punta Perico, Punta Mejia, and Bahia Muertos, as well as localized spots like the floating buoys. The dorado are mostly up to 15 pounds, with lots of smaller ones getting released. There are a few larger fish up to 30 pounds also being hooked. Fishing can be a daily pick-pick-pick with only a fish-or-two here and there. Or, it might be pandemonium if you hit a school, and the fish crash the boat with every rod getting bent simultaneously in a wild melee of jumping and fighting fish! Not much in the way of tuna now, but that could be because the dorado are so easy to find and the tuna are either fast moving, or it takes full focus to chase them down or to find a spot, especially when the boats around you are all hooked up on dorado! Of greater interest are the big dogtooth/ cubera snapper that have shown up in the shallows outside of Bahia Muertos. Using whole
bonito or needlefish as bait for these toothy armored beasts has them biting almost every day, although it takes an enormous effort and a lot of luck to pull one out of their rocky hiding places. Perhaps only one per day is getting back to the beach for the big photo session. These fish have been 40 to 50 pounds or more, and one that weighed 68 pounds on the scale at the beach was just a few pounds short of the IGFA world record. Additional species lately included roosterfish, jack crevalle, big bonito, sierra, pargo, snapper, pompano, amberjack, and rainbow runner. East Cape has transitioned from late summer to early fall quite nicely with sea temps holding steady at 85 to 88-degrees. The yellowfin tuna are still in the neighborhood, with some as large as 100 pounds. There are plenty of dorado spread out through the area with limits not being uncommon. Wahoo are few and far between now, while bill fishing continues to be extraordinary, blue and black marlin, mixed with the striped marlin, along with a few sailfish are being found in the warm water. Closer to shore, big pargo, pompano, and Almaco jack have been taken off the bottom, and there are plenty of large roosterfish along the beaches in both directions. At Puerto Los Cabos, the mainstay remains dorado and yellowfin tuna, an occasional wahoo, a limited mix of bottom species and some scattered billfish action. Significant boat pressure on these same grounds, combined with large concentrations of natural food sources, has caused the yellowfin tuna to be finicky. Best chances for the tuna were with sardina and strips of squid; a few also were striking on larger baitfish. Catches ranged from one to over five tuna per boat, weighing up to 70 pounds. Dorado were found a bit closer to shore than the yellowfin; however, there are still scads of very small-sized dorado, with a lower percentage of keeper-sized fish in the mix. Sardina for bait was the best bet, but also trolling hoochies and feathers, as well as drift fishing with strips of squid worked. Bottom fishing highlights included a few monster Almaco jacks to 95-pounds. A scattering of pargo, pompano, and triggerfish rounded out the bottom action. A few smallersized roosterfish were caught trolling inshore stretches near the local marina. Marlin anglers were limited, as more anglers were now targeting the tuna; though a couple of black marlin hook-ups were reported; some big fish ended up being lost after hours of battle. Some smaller-sized blue and striped marlin were also reported daily in limited quantity.*

The waters of Baja California Sur provide some of the richest biological grounds in Mexico. Sea turtles once occurred in large numbers, feeding on abundant algae, sea grasses and invertebrates. The coastline is impressively varied but can be generally characterized as a mosaic of shallow lagoons or esteros, and rocky headlands interspersing long, wide sandy beaches on the Pacific coast, and a rocky coastline interspersed with short narrow beaches and small bays on the Gulf of California coast. Los Cabos has wide array of sandy beaches suitable for sea turtle nesting. This diversity of environments combined with the large range of physical factors (temperatures range from 50°F C to 90°F), along with the nutrient rich waters, have allowed all five Pacific sea turtle species to flourish along this coast. Sea turtles are very old organisms. They have lived on the Earth for more than 220 million years. They even managed to survive weather changes that killed the dinosaurs. Male sea turtles spend their entire lives at sea, but females return to the same beaches they were born on, once every two years or so, to lay eggs. Female sea turtles return to where they were hatched to lay eggs if they survive. Only 1 in 1,000 baby sea turtles survive to adulthood. Turtles lay eggs in the holes in the sand. These nests are not easily recognized because the turtle covers them with an additional layer of sand. Depending on the species, each nest contains between 60-200 eggs. They hatch at night and are guided by the bright horizon over the ocean. Sex is determined by the temperature of the sand. Warm temperatures tend to produce more female hatchlings, whereas cooler temperature result in males. For the past 20 years, researchers have been studying the sea turtles in Los Cabos. This monitoring provides important information to support protection of these animals. Out of 7 known species of sea turtles, 6 are critically endangered. Sadly, the fact is that they face many dangers: accidental capture and entanglement in fishing gear, the loss of nesting and feeding sites to coastal development, crushing nests by cars on the beaches, lighting near the shore, poaching, ocean pollution and global warming. They are also threatened by turtle egg poaching, consumption and souvenirs. You can get involved in caring for these beautiful creatures by assisting in hatcheries, maintaining clean beaches, and helping with marine conservation so they can live and breed in a safe environment. For wildlife lovers, this will be an experience you’ll never forget. *

Lovers Beach Getting there is an adventure in itself, since it is reachable only by boat, kayak or any other water vessel. The easiest way to get there is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Your captain will cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean (Divorce Beach). This side is very dangerous for swimming, so swim on Lover’s Beach side only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. Tips: On occasion there are a few vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services.
Medano If you’re looking for the action, this is where it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by a lot of souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No gracias.” Water sports are available such as jet skis, parasailing, flyboarding, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and more. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

Chileno Chileno Beach is a very popular location for snorkeling and swimming due to its calm waters. You’ll find tide pools at the left end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. Public restrooms and showers are available, as well as a handicap ramp that takes you right to the beach. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near KM 14 of the main highway. Tips: Snorkeling visibility is often better in the early mornings and you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours. Bring snorkeling gear!

Santa Maria Santa Maria is a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkeling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. However, the beach does have brand new bathrooms and palapas. Location: Traveling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.
Palmilla Palmilla Beach is known for its family friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes and the One&Only Hotel. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at KM 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available.
Balandra A stunning bay in La Paz (the State's Capital) that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist-high water that is crystal clear. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock.” You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra! Location: A two hour drive from Cabo San Lucas. Once you're in La Paz, follow the main drag along the boardwalk, pass Costa Baja Resort and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed.

Cerritos Cerritos Beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. You can rent a boogie board or surf board or even take a surf lesson. Location: Exit at KM 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Tips: Come prepared with food, drinks and beach gear. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful, so swim with caution.

It’s hard to think about Cabo San Lucas and not think of the multi-platinum musician, songwriter and entrepreneur, Sammy Hagar. Raised in Fontana, California, Hagar had his musical beginnings in San Francisco and the Bay Area in 1967 and continues to constantly tour and play music. With multiple restaurants and bars, spirit brands, platinum albums, hundreds of sold out concert appearances and an autobiography under his belt, he still finds time to visit his beloved Cabo and continues to celebrate his birthday at Cabo Wabo Cantina every October.

You first visited Cabo in the late 70s and you’ve been a witness to what was then a quiet fishing town transform into today’s internationally renowned travel destination. What are your feelings about the growth in Los Cabos? Yes there have been quite a few growth spurts in Cabo since I first came down in the late 70s (1978) but nothing like we’ve experienced over the last few years. I remember when Hotel Finisterra and Hotel Solmar were the only things on that beach-that was the first big one. Then another growth spurt came in pretty strong on what is called the Corridor with Las Ventanas, the Melía, The Westin, Hilton etc. After the last big hurricane (Odile), they started building hotels side-by-side from San José del Cabo all the way down to downtown Cabo San Lucas. It’s still a beautiful place with miles and miles of perfect beautiful uncrowded beaches, my only concerns are the water and pollution from the amount of people coming to the delicate environment and infrastructure of the Peninsula. I know most people would say “it’s good for business,” but in the long run, it may not be good for anyone. There are plenty of rooms and a lot of them are empty. I hope it slows down. What has been your favorite thing about owning Cabo Wabo throughout all these years? My favorite thing about having the Cabo Wabo is that it’s right in the backyard of my favorite vacation destination! When I want to go downtown, I just call Jorge at the Cabo Wabo, my long time friend, co-owner/ manager and say ‘I’m coming down tonight.’ Then I can just go there and have the time of my life-- starting with a great authentic Mexican meal with some of the best margaritas anywhere, then jumping up on stage with the house band that knows a few dozen of my songs, making a club full of surprised people very happy, and then I get to go home and sleep in my own bed and wake up on the beach! It doesn’t get any better than that. It changed my life years ago and it gets better every year!
After 28 yearly birthday celebrations in Cabo, 2019 being number 29, what is one of your favorite Birthday Bash moments? My favorite birthday bash moment could never be narrowed down to just one! I’ve had so many great guests, so many great times but maybe in the Top 10 most fun I’ve ever had on stage at the Cabo Wabo birthday bash would be the year Kenny Chesney surprised me with his whole band and played for three hours and 40 minutes -- that night might’ve been my biggest surprise birthday present ever! The Wabos are back in Cabo for this b-day bash, which makes this is a special year, anything else exciting that Redheads can look forward to for this 2019 birthday bash [without ruining any surprises]? Oh yeah the Wabos reunion is going to be a hoot! We’re going to play deep Sammy Hagar tracks that don’t get played from my band The Circle or Chickenfoot. Michael Anthony is going to join us and will do a Los Tres Gusanos set at least one night and on the two off-nights (October 10 and 12th) the band The Bullet Boys will play one night and Roger Kline and The Peacemakers are playing on the 12th and God knows who else is going to show up! I don’t even ask anymore, I don’t invite anyone anymore, I just like walking into my dressing room and see who’s gonna walk through the door next, jump on stage and just go for it. I think that makes the best party -- when you plan too much things can go wrong. When there’s no plan, then nothing is disappointing... it’s all good.

Let's talk about Santo Pure Mezquila - in May of this year Santo Fino Blanco was introduced as the second spirit of the Los Santo family, a partnership between you and Chef and Restaurateur Guy Fieri. How did this spirit venture and partnership come about? When I sold Cabo Wabo tequila (not the restaurants) I really missed seeing my tequila on shelves in bars, liquor stores, supermarkets and restaurants. For me it was kind of like hearing your song on the radio or seeing it being played on TV -- it is a very surreal experience -- and financially, life-changing. The success of Cabo Wabo tequila wasn’t even a dream! I missed owning it. So first because of a non-compete clause, I made Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum which I still have and it’s doing well -- but I love my tequila and wanted to make the world’s best tequila again. First, a group including my partner Marco Monroy and I wanted to do something different, so we invented the mezquila. Then, my dear friend Guy Fieri wanted to be a partner and said “I want to make tequila,” so now we’ve made Santo
Blanco, and I think it’s the world’s finest Blanco tequila ever made! Too many secrets to go into it, but I’ve learned a lot about making tequila over the years, and the first thing is never compromise or cut corners on the quality. After that, with the right distiller and the best agave available it’s pretty simple.

In recent years Los Cabos has become an important destination for national and international travelers thanks to its combination of perfect weather, spectacular vistas and sunsets as well as, of course, its gastronomy. Thanks to the Sea of Cortez, or the world’s aquarium according to Jacques Cousteau, Los Cabos has the added advantage that allows us, the chefs, to offer fresh high-quality seafood and produce which, when meticulously plated and accompanied by each individual’s creative touch, transcend frontiers. Until recently, Mexicans have typically discarded Los Cabos as a foreign tourist haven, whose best restaurant practices seemed to focus heavily on satisfying the palates of foreigners. This resulted in raw ingredients being imported into Cabo and practically zero local harvesting.
Today, we’re experiencing a veritable restaurant rejuvenation as we are focused on fresh, locally sourced organic produce. We are reinventing the older restaurants with fresher, locally sourced and organic products, as well as opening new restaurants with that same focus, giving vegetables, the local foods, and the ecology a fundamental importance. Combining this exciting new communityfocused trend with a recent surge of new restaurants throughout Los Cabos, there has been a fundamental shift towards local ecological sustainability. Thanks to the ever-growing influence of social media, and these subtle changes in practices within the local restaurant community, Los Cabos is rapidly trending as a premier gastronomy destination.
The Evolution of Travel Trends Recent travel trend studies for 2020 conducted by Booking.com show more than 55% of world- wide travelers are seeking eco-friendly, sustainable travel experiences (a factor which was not important for the majority of people polled last year). Additionally, 70% of the world’s travelers are more inclined to choose a destination by its environmental stance.

What Does This Tell Us? The growth trend that we are experiencing, both as a destination and statewide, invites us to promote the use of local food sources, ¨farm to table¨ where the food comes from the restaurant’s own fields like we do at Acre, responsible fishing that respects protected breeding grounds, and seasonality among others. This allows the food consumed in Los Cabos to be fresher, natural, and consequently, of better quality. This has captivated visitors and positioned us as an ideal destination to enjoy fine food. Because we are a beach destination, our gastronomical objective is to offer a quality guarantee, which combined with the incredible kitchens of well recognized chefs like Enrique Olvera, Jean George Vongerichten, Richard Sandoval, Martin Berasategui, among others, permit us to grow and be cutting edge in Mexico´s gastronomic scene; in terms of innovation, responsibility and sustainability.
And we don’t stop at fishing and local harvesting; we are also home to Acre Dogs, a dog sanctuary, where we have already re-homed over rescue 115 dogs. Environmental conservation and caring for the environment, as well as the responsible use without harm of its resources, are a priority for the government, and also for the travelers who look for an experience that not only doesn’t affect the environment, but rather, one that protects it.
At Acre, we are part of the movement where community and sustainability are pillars. Inspired by continuous learning and knowing the constant need for high-quality products for high-end kitchens, Ezequiel Hernández of the high-end fish distributor JA MAT' and I developed a fishing technique called Shuketzu, which strengthens the concept of a sustainable kitchen and allows us to have impeccable fish. Shuketzu is born from a Japanese technique called Ikejime and came about from a constant mutual search for restaurants and suppliers with a vision of excellence. Currently both Acre and I have supported JA MAT' in its training courses for local fishermen to strive for excellence by practicing this technique, which consists of provoking cerebral death of the fish to avoid needless suffering, and in bleeding out the fish before it’s placed in a “snow” ice bath. This process creates a series of benefits in a chain reaction: the fishermen get paid more because the fishing is only done with hooks, the fish population is better balanced–instead of looking for specific types of fish, you keep whatever the sea delivered that day, Acre Baja gets the best fish in the Los Cabos area serving only sashimi-quality fish, and JA MAT' fulfills its mission to train the participants to practice social and environmental responsibility. Small ideas are like snowballs that expand and can come to benefit everyone.

El Squid Roe 30 Year Anniversary – In a town where businesses frequently come and go, 30 years is a huge accomplishment! On August 30, El Squid Roe celebrated this big milestone with party and music by guest DJ MAKJ. Cabo’s iconic El Squid Roe opened in 1989, as a laid-back bar and restaurant in what was then a sleepy little fishing town. Food insecurity is a prevalent yet often misunderstood issue. It’s easy for people to assume that food insecurity is synonymous with hunger, but they are two distinct issues: hunger is an immediate and physiological need, while food insecurity represents a lack of access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious foods for an active and healthy lifestyle. In Baja California Sur, about half of households in poor and marginalized communities report insufficient access to adequate food on a weekly basis. The good news is that Baja California Sur Food Security Alliance (BCS-FSA) brings together a diverse group of multisector member organizations and individuals to partner at the local level to create meaningful solutions to this complex issue! With a thorough knowledge of the problem and adequate support, we can help the BCS-FSA give the people of Southern Baja access to affordable, nutritious foods they need to live healthy and fulfilling lives. Since it was founded, the BCS-FSA has taken a number of critical actions against food insecurity in Southern Baja. ICF has supported alliance members to plant community gardens paired with cooking classes and nutrition education at feeding kitchens in at-risk communities, in order to increase access to healthy ingredients. The BCS-FSA also works in tandem with community stakeholders to institute education programs that help community members learn how to garden from an early age. Another key initiative of the alliance is to reduce food waste and rescue locally grown crops that would otherwise be thrown out, often due to strict export standards. To accomplish this, ICF has worked with consultants and members of BCS-FSA to coordinate volunteers and establish a program to collect and distribute fresh produce to the food insecure population in the region. This project really took off in 2018 thanks to a grant from Oregon Tilth’s Social Investment Project. The project was coordinated by Raíz de Fondo Jardines y Educación A.C., in La Paz, working with in-kind donations from local producers, the generosity of local volunteers, and a critical partnership with DIF BCS, a public social welfare institution. Since its inception, the project has grown from a pilot in La Paz to serve those in need throughout BCS, including Los Cabos. The Cabo San Lucas Flora and Fauna Protection Area is a protected area located in Cabo San Lucas. It was created on August 9, 1973 and has an area of 3,996.04 hectares. The purpose of the Reserve is to protect the southern portion of the Gulf of California and conserve the area's resources with emphasis on the multiple species considered endemic or subject to special protection by Mexican legislation, threatened or endangered and those of economic importance Current and potential. Most of the Protected Natural area is in maritime surface (95%). This protected natural area is considered a Natural Heritage by Unesco, within the group "Islands and Protected Natural Areas of the Gulf of California". To ensure the conservation of marine life in the Protected Area there are some established rules that must be respected: - Tour operators must inform tourists about the area of environmental protection and its special conservation, protection and management protocol; It is strictly prohibited: - Throw garbage in the sea; - Use a non-biodegradable protector sunscreen; - Harass, chase, disturb or damage whales in any way, for the whale watching activity must be respected the official Mexican standard NOM-131-SEMARNART-2010; - Feed, disturb, chase, touch, hurt, remove or ride manta rays, live corals, sea lions, as well as any form of marine organisms; - Approach less than 50 meters away from the rocks, specially of the Arch and of the sea lion colony - Fishing activities (Fishing sport and/or commercial) and extraction of marine organisms. - Collect, capture, hunt, chase, retain, extract or appropriate species, derivatives, products or remains of wild, terrestrial or aquatic flora and fauna, for consumption or for sale. The growth of disorderly tourism, without respect for environmental laws and the lack of enforcement to combat illegal activities has generated distorted markets with an over supply of services. This situation represents a threat to natural resources and generates conflicts in the area. The most affected area is observed in the area of the Arch (emblem of the natural area), where various activities take place all year round and without any control (glass bottom boats, private yachts and sport fishing boats) significantly disturbing the sea lion colony and endangering the life of divers in one of the most famous diving spots in Los Cabos called Land’s End. As a strategy to combat environmental crimes and involve natural resources and civil society holders in their surveillance and protection, the Federal Environmental Prosecutor (PROFEPA) forms Participatory Environmental Monitoring Committees (CVAP), organized groups of people committed to the care and defense of the natural resources of their community, who freely express their willingness to participate in surveillance, prevention and reporting activities. They contribute with the environmental authority in the surveillance tasks and are accredited and trained by PROFEPA. This year was created the first Committee in Los Cabos that will work supporting CONANP and PROFEPA, as a legal instrument, to prevent and report illegal activities that may cause environmental damage putting the ecological balance at risk.*
