Although the trees (or cactus?) don't change colors down here, we feel the fall season come along with some exciting cultural events. Mexico celebrates the colorful Day of the Dead, the Art Walk season in San José del Cabo begins, the San José Organic Market opens-up again, and we celebrate the anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. Los Cabos (“the capes” in Spanish) is located on the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the State Capital. If you take a look at the "The Tip of Southern Baja" map on page 12 you can see that the highways and towns form a loop, which you can easily drive in one day. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful, and the winds are stronger and the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez side. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months.

“The aquarium of the world”

is how Jacques Cousteau described the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this "trap" and either stayed in the warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. In Southern Baja, however, it's not just about the ocean, in this naturally magical place the mountains meet the desert and the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pine-oak forests, and you can find wild mushrooms, wild horses and deer. Ready to explore?

Cabo San Lucas

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo Arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach (the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area), an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

San José del Cabo

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

The Corridor

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this highway you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, and championship golf courses. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, Nationally Protected coral reef that offers outstanding snorkeling and scuba diving. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and those who just want to get away from it all.

La Paz

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waisthighwater at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

Loreto

Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

ATMS

Dollars are accepted almost everywhere but you will usually get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate posted.

The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, Banregio, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the streets or marina will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

CASH OR CARD?

Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only establishments. Always ask beforehand and carry cash just in case. Keep in mind your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

GROCERIES

In Cabo San Lucas, Walmart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Walmart, La Comer, Chedraui Selecto or Soriana. Mercado Santa Carmelo or California Ranch Market are good options for specialty foods and dietary restrictions. If you need a quick grab, OXXO stores are reasonably priced convenience stores located all over town.

HOW DO I DIAL?

DRIVING

Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway. The cost varies from $63.00 to $75.00 pesos, depending on your destination. ALTO STOP

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa Maria Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are many charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos

Located in La Playa just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in

the area with 200 available slips for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

Buggy Tours, ATV/UTV Rentas, and Biking There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid Driver’s License. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike and taking a riding excursion, or maybe just a beach cruiser and joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, backcountry UTV and ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are

appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Jet Skis, Parasailing, Banana Boats and more Go to Medano Beach for a day full of fun water activities. There are numerous options along the beach, such as jet skis, banana boat cruises, aquatic bikes, SUP rentals, and more! Or try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat! Water Parks Wild Canyon Adventures has recently opened its brand new water park section, which you can access with your park day pass, a perfect way to spend a full day of fun family activities. Wild Wet Fun Water Park, located about 30 minutes from San José del Cabo, has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms and a pirate ship. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at KM 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. SEASONS June through November: The summer months are known to be the best as the Southern Hemisphere’s swells send great waves to the Pacific, Cabo San Lucas, San José and the East Cape. December through February: East Cape and Costa Azul are on the flatter side. The Pacific can be good this time of year because it’s exposed to the west swell. March through May: This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout while enjoying nature. At Medano Beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.

KITE SURFING SNORKELING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkeling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock. Lover’s Beach

This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkeling in the area. This eight-fingered coral reef is about a 1.5-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles.

It’s now two-thirds of the way through the Cabo fall tournament season with Thanksgiving just over a month away. Anglers have a lot to be thankful for with the big billfish, tuna, and even a few trophy-sized dorado that have been scarce for most of this year. For the record, an angler’s perception of “big” varies depending on the home waters. Down here, it takes a yellowfin tuna weighing nearly 300 pounds to raise eyebrows; a blue or black marlin has to double that. Admittedly, many are more interested in the much smaller fish. The trophy-sized dorado in most tournaments must meet a minimum of 30 pounds. There are many smaller than that which are perfect for dinner prepared at your favorite local restaurant. Dorado, by the way, are considered sportfish and cannot be sold commercially. So, if you want fresh dorado, you must catch it! Another fish that is abundant right now is the smaller yellowfin tuna that can be served in a variety of ways, from raw to deep-fried.

In the “tough-as-nails” category are the roosterfish, and even the jack crevalle add another dimension to the outstanding inshore or beach action for trophy-sized fish. Up at Puerto Los Cabos, expect a mixed bag. There are black skipjack with some yellowfin mixed in on the Gordo Bank, and some larger yellowfin to 70 pounds. However, as the season winds down, the dorado and wahoo seem to be the dominating species. A new school of dorado moved in outside of Palmilla Point, where limits were the rule for fish in the 10- to 20-pound class. They were striking on a variety of trolled lures as well as bait. However, be aware that inspectors are now regularly checking numbers, so make sure you don’t go over your two-fish limit of dorado. Wahoo are up north of Punta Gorda, and trolling Rapalas produced most strikes; some boats caught up to three as large as 40 pounds. Sea temps are in free-fall at East Cape from the highs last month in the 83- to 84- degree range. Plus, the north winds that have been seasonally absent throughout summer and fall are sporadic now and will become stronger. The dorado and striped marlin bite, with a few larger wahoo, will continue to slow as winds increase as will the roosterfish and pompano that have been consistent biters. The sardina become more difficult for the pangueros to catch.

Up La Paz way, there are two fleets to choose from – the La Paz Fleet or Las Arenas Fleet at Muertos Bay. By this time of the year, the north wind will dictate your choice. Muertos Bay is an hour’s shuttle ride from La Paz. However, it offers more protection from the north winds that are common in the winter, and fishing is often much closer to the launch area. Dorado and perhaps small yellowfin tuna will be the hoped-for surface targets as well as roosterfish, jack crevalle, and perhaps sierra – all result in an excellent ceviche and can be found along the sandy beaches. Other options are fishing along the rocky coastline for cabrilla, grouper, and pargo. If the wind isn’t an issue, the La Paz Fleet offers fishing in La Paz Bay shoreline and around several islands as well as the east coast of the Baja shoreline, with a variety of habitats. There may still be some surface action for dorado. Inbetween the dorado, add a smattering of hardfighting bonito, jack crevalle, a pargo or cabrilla, and too many pesky needlefish rounding out the day. Farther up the coast at Loreto, the waters are cooling down. Air temps are moderate, with minimal humidity. Breezes are coming more from the north and are strengthening as winter closes in. The San Bruno high spot is a go-to area that can provide exciting bottom fishing for some good-sized assorted snapper and some of the biggest triggerfish around. Dorado were working the surface in this same area and filled up the two-fish limit for anyone wanting to keep these smaller dorado. Also, north of town along the coast, cabrilla are munching sardina from Punta Colorado to Mangle, with most fish in the five-pound range. In the same area are big schools of cocinera (a.k.a. “green jack”) which tend to be no bigger than 12- to 14-inches. Try catching a few and using them as live bait on larger hooks where yellowtail, grouper, and perhaps cabrilla or whatever else might be lurking on the bottom. Remember the adage “bigger bait ... bigger fish.” The waters may still be warm and crystal clear. It’s a glorious time to get out and see the islands, bays, and maybe even one of the early arriving whales. While the action around the tip of Baja remains constant this time of year, up into the Sea of Cortez, the north winds are a factor to consider when choosing your fishing days. Many times, early morning to noon is a good time to be on the water. Most operations are willing to take anglers on a half-day trip. *

Whale sharks, the largest fish in the world, are actually a harmless filter-feeding species of shark. Only 3 species of sharks are filter feeders including whale sharks, basking sharks, and megamouth sharks. Despite their enormous size, the average whale shark is typically 32 feet long and weighs 20,000 lbs. Whale sharks eat by straining small organisms like plankton, schooling fish, and squid from the water. A whale shark can have up to 3,000 teeth at once and between 300 and 350 rows of teeth. They have a streamlined body with a flattened, broad head. The whale shark occurs in approximately 124 countries worldwide. Whale sharks may be one of the longest living animals in the world, with an estimated lifespan of over 100 years. They are oceanic and coastal, tropical to warmtemperate pelagic sharks. The whale shark is generally encountered close to, or at the surface. It is often seen far offshore, but also comes close inshore and sometimes enters lagoons of coral atolls. Baja California Sur is one of the few places in the world you can swim with whale sharks in shallow waters and close to the port. Every October whale sharks travel in large numbers to the Sea of Cortez, at La Paz Bay. Sometimes divers have been surprised while diving in the Protected Area Flora and Fauna of Cabo San Lucas and have amazing encounters with these animals. They are gentle giants and have been listed as vulnerable by the IUCN. Despite protection by the government, the species faces various threats such as becoming bycatch when caught by local fishermen and getting stranded. The lack of knowledge about whale sharks' ecology also hinders conservation efforts. They face a negative impact from humans through irresponsible tourism practices, fishing, as well as injuries from boating and ocean recreation. In traditional Chinese medicine, whale shark parts including their fins are often used, which is one of their biggest threats. Climate change has impacted many species in the world, and whale sharks are no exception. The changing climates lead to a loss in their prey species, and the development of coastal regions creates marine pollution which takes away large portions of their habitat. The whale shark season in La Paz is from October to April. You can support the conservation of this species. On your next trip to Baja California Sur, try swimming side by side with this wonderful animal and you will experience one of the most overwhelming experiences of your lifetime!*

Lovers Beach Getting there is an adventure in itself, since it is reachable only by boat, kayak or any other water vessel. The easiest way to get there is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Your captain will cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean (Divorce Beach). This side is very dangerous for swimming, so swim on Lover’s Beach side only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. Tips: On occasion there are a few vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services.

Medano If you’re looking for the action, this is where it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by a lot of souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No gracias.” Water sports are available such as jet skis, parasailing, flyboarding, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and more. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

Chileno Chileno Beach is a very popular location for snorkeling and swimming due to its calm waters. You’ll find tide pools at the left end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. Public restrooms and showers are available, as well as a handicap ramp that takes you right to the beach. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near KM 14 of the main highway. Tips: Snorkeling visibility is often better in the early mornings and you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours. Bring snorkeling gear!

Santa Maria Santa Maria is a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkeling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. However, the beach does have brand new bathrooms and palapas. Location: Traveling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.

Palmilla Palmilla Beach is known for its family friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes and the One&Only Hotel. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at KM 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available.

Balandra A stunning bay in La Paz (the State's Capital) that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist-high water that is crystal clear. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock.” You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra! Location: A two hour drive from Cabo San Lucas. Once you're in La Paz, follow the main drag along the boardwalk, pass Costa Baja Resort and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed.

Cerritos Cerritos Beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. You can rent a boogie board or surf board or even take a surf lesson. Location: Exit at KM 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Tips: Come prepared with food, drinks and beach gear. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful, so swim with caution.

Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) takes place on November 2nd and is a celebration of loved who are no longer with us, and are honored by creating incredibly intricate altars in their memory. The Day of the Dead imagery has seemed to gain popularity in the past years, such as the iconic catrinas (female skeletons) and calaveritas (decorated sugar skulls), and the popular Disney/Pixar movie Coco brought this colorful point of view about death to an entire new audience. With the representation of this Mexican tradition spreading wide, it is important to understand the true meaning of it. This spiritual celebration brings families together,  where  they  join  at  their  loved one’s resting place in the  cemetery. The  families create an altar with offerings of food  and beverages, precious objects, and photos of the deceased. Each altar is unique in its own way based on each family’s beliefs and celebrations, but traditionally it can include cempasúchil (sem-pah-soo-cheel) flowers, veladoras (candles), religious artifacts, incense, and the traditional pan de muerto (bread of the dead). Families gather, sometimes for the  entire  night, by their loved one’s grave to share food and  drinks,  play  music, and  recount stories  of  their  beloved. The celebration is not only to honor the departed, but also to call forth their spirits to visit those left behind. The food and drink offerings are meant to entice the spirits, and the music, flowers, incense, and stories to please them and bring them joy. THURSDAY ART WALK IN SAN JOSÉ DEL CABO by Sabrina Lear

Pan de muerto (bread of the dead) is a type of sweet roll traditionally baked during the weeks leading up to the Day of the Dead. It is said that the shapes resembling bones represent those who we’ve lost and the ball on top is a tear drop to represent the sorrow. The bones are placed in a circle to represent the circle of life. TRY IT! You can find Pan de Muerto at most grocery stores such as Walmart and Mega or go to a local bakery.

Each Thursday evening from November through June, the streets of historic San José del Cabo’s vibrant Gallery Art District come alive with color and creativity. Hidden behind the church off of Plaza Mijares (the main square) Obregón Street is closed to traffic from 5 to 9 pm. on Thursdays for Art Walk. Visit the many galleries and enjoy a glass of complementary wine or spirits while taking in the warm and friendly atmosphere. Ideal for families, it’s a chance to meet artists, attend new exhibits and experience a very special side of Los Cabos that many visitors may miss. Art Walk was created by the Gallery District Association to attract art lovers and tourists to the area. Members are recognizable by distinctive plaques posted on each gallery. Exhibiting genres from paintings and sculpture to ceramics, folk art, photography and jewelry, it’s easy to fall in love with a favorite piece. If you’re driving from Cabo San Lucas or the Corridor, plan to park on Calle Centenario, the boulevard that runs behind the downtown area. For easiest access, park close to the foot of Morelos Street (look for the beautiful hotel El Encanto Suites on the corner) and walk from there. The Mexican Revolution in particular, which is commemorated every year on November 20th, because Gustavo I. Madero declared in the Plan de San Luis Potosí of 1910 (which he wrote in jail), that this would be the day of the revolt and beginning of the revolution. It has been fun to learn many things about the history of my country while writing this, I hope you enjoy reading about it too. So here is a brief explanation of the Mexican Revolution, also known as the Mexican Civil War: After the Mexican Independence in 1810 from the ruling of the Spanish Crown, we had about 70 years of many different events before the famous "Porfiriato", which was the approximately 30 year ruling of Porfirio Diaz. The social and political unrest at the end of this period was what sparked the revolution. Some of the events during that 70-year period after the Mexican Independence and before the "Porfiriato" were the MexicanAmerican War, the Constitution of 1857, the presidency of Benito Juarez, and the Battle of Puebla on "5 de Mayo" where Mexico defeats France. One year later, France defeats Mexico declaring it the "Second Mexican Empire" and gives Maximilian the crown. Maximilian is executed and France withdraws from Mexico. Porfirio Diaz takes part in many of these wars. A couple decades later the "Porfiriato" begins. The Porfirio Díaz rule started in 1876 with the slogan "no re-election." The only presidency that occurred during the "Porfiriato" was that of Manuel González from 1880 to 1884. Porfirio held power continuously from 1884 until 1911 by fixing elections, but giving an illusion of democracy. The "Porfiriato" was known for the promotion of industry and development of infrastructure like roads, railroads, ports, etc., by opening the country to foreign investment, but Díaz suppressed the opposition in order to reassure the foreign companies that their investments were safe. Farmers and peasants both suffered oppression and exploitation. Wealth, political power, and access to education were for elite families known as hacendados who controlled most of the land.

Most Mexicans were landless people working for slave-like wages at the haciendas. The opposition movement and unrest of the people began, and that was the beginning of the Revolution. A number of Mexicans began to organize in opposition to Díaz. In 1905, the Mexican Liberal Party (Partido Liberal de México) formed addressing the problems of the Díaz regime. The PLM were Ricardo Flores Magón and his two brothers, Enrique and Jesús. They, with Luis Cabrera Lobato and Antonio Díaz Soto y Gama collaborated on an antiDiaz publication. They were very important men in the Mexican Revolution for agitating the masses. Shortly before the election of 1920, Francisco I. Madero, a member of one of Mexico's richest families, funded the newspaper "Anti-Reelectionista," in opposition to the continuous re-election of Díaz. In 1910, Francisco I. Madero announced his challenge to Díaz for the presidency under the Anti-Reelectionist Party. Díaz had him jailed before the election, and Díaz was announced the winner. On the 5th of October 1910, Madero wrote from jail the Plan de San Luis Potosí, with its slogan "free suffrage and no reelection" (Sufragio Efectivo, No Re-elección). It declared the Díaz presidency illegal and called for a revolt against Díaz, starting on November 20, 1910. Madero's plan was made to foment popular uprising against Díaz and gain support from the U.S. to be able to defeat Diaz. Many revolutionary movements started due to Madero's Plan de San Luis Potosí. The promises of land reform in Mexico attracted many peasants and rebellions arose from all the working-class Mexicans, along with indigenous natives. Madero also attracted the forces of famous rebels like Pascual Orozco, Pancho Villa, Ricardo Flores Magón, Emiliano Zapata, and Venustiano Carranza, all of which won battles throughout Mexico. With the Federal Army defeated, Diaz began negotiations with the revolutionaries and the talks culminated on the 21st of May 1911 with the Treaty of Ciudad Juárez. The treaty declared that Díaz would abdicate the presidency by the end of May 1911, to be replaced by an interim president, Francisco León de la Barra, until new elections took place. Madero was elected president in a fair election in October 1911, and was inaugurated in November 1911. Díaz left for exile in Paris.

Opposition to Madero then started to form from both the conservatives, who thought he was too liberal, and from former revolutionary rebel leaders who thought he was too conservative. Zapata rebelled against Madero in 1911 because of Madero's lack to implement land reform. Zapata promulgated the Plan de Ayala in November 1911, declaring a rebellion against Madero. He started the guerrilla again in the state of Morelos and fought and won against the Federal Army of Madero. Zapata remained loyal to the Plan de Ayala and stayed in rebellion against every government up until he was assassinated by the orders of future President Venustiano Carranza in 1919. Vicroriano Huerta was a professional soldier who served in the Federal Army under Madero. Huerta changed allegiance from Madero to the rebels and U.S. Ambassador Henry Lane Wilson, who had helped undermine U.S. trust in Madero's presidency. With the support of the U.S., Huerta was to become provisional president of Mexico. Madero and his vice president Pino Suárez were forced to resign in February 1913 and were later assassinated. The counterrevolutionary regime of General Victoriano Huerta came to rule. Huerta was president from February 1913 until July 1914, when he was forced out by revolutionary forces. Mexico then went into a civil war (1914–1915). The Constitutionalist wealthy landowner Venustiano Carranza was the victor in 1915, defeating the revolutionary forces of former Constitutionalist Pancho Villa. Emiliano Zapata was later assassinated in 1919 by agents of President Carranza. The promulgation of the Mexican Constitution of 1917 is considered the end of the armed conflict of the Mexican Revolution. Álvaro Obregón becomes president in 1920 and the period from 1920 to 1940 is considered to still be a phase of the Revolution until the consolidation of the revolution with President Lazaro Cardenas from 1934 to 1940. CASA HOGAR Initially founded as a plan for a refuge for orphans and boys from troubled homes in 1990, Casa Hogar’s facility opened in Cabo San Lucas in early 2008. The Palapa Society of Todos Santos, A.C. is focused on enhancing the lives of the residents and creating the leaders of tomorrow. It all started over 15 years ago with a simple plan to help students with scholarships. This quickly evolved to include providing English classes for local children and adults, and an afterschool Art program as well. Then, with the growing accumulation of books donated by part-time residents and visitors, a bilingual community library was started. With early support from the community The Palapa Society began to thrive. In 2015, a local Todos Santos resident, working with Palapa Society partner ICF, provided a substantial donation to build the new Palapa Learning Center campus. The Campus includes: the Biblioteca Elena Poniatowska community library for adults and children, afterschool program classrooms, and the SEPcertified middle school and high school which offer the best of progressive and innovative learning experiences and a host of extra-curricular clubs from art to leadership and science to soccer. “We had begun our journey embarking on the beautiful 85’ Contessa Yacht in the city of La Paz; only two hours north, by car, of Cabo San Lucas. All in all, in seven days we visited seven islands and spanned nearly 500 km of the waters of the Baja peninsula. The best seven days of all of our lives. An especially unforgettable experience was when a few dolphin greeted us one morning as we woke aboard the 85’ Contessa Yacht at Isla San José. The three of them were curious about the large yacht they found in the bay, and I couldn’t control my curiosity either. Quickly, the crew had a paddle board ready for me and I was off. I paddled towards them and they swam towards me, one swooped quickly under, and the other went around. I saw a little sparkling eye look up at me, and in an instant, a flick of the tail had the dolphin down and away. For two hours, this cat and mouse game continued. Sometimes I sat there in awe, legs dangling on either side of my board with the dolphins poking their heads completely out of the water to get a good look at me. I jumped in the water once the dolphins decided they were bored of me and swam to shore, making it to the entrance of the mangrove system of the island. There, a beach canopy and umbrellas, chairs, a cooler full of drinks and lunch were served and waiting for me, along with our yacht stewardess who had set everything up perfectly. As I took my first steps onto the beach, the stewardess handed me a glass of cold champagne. I sat there with my legs stretched out in front of me; the salt on my face clung to my brows and tickled my lips. The warmth of the sun caressed my skin as I leaned forward and looked down at my toes, which I wiggled through the calmest, most turquoise water I had ever seen. ‘Heaven on Earth’, I said to myself out loud, and then took a sip of my champagne.”

Día De Los Muertos

Day of the Dead (or in Spanish Día de los Muertos), is a holiday celebrated throughout Mexico. Unlike other popular celebrations, this multi-day holiday focuses on family and friends gathering to remember and pray for friends and family who have passed away. This meeting is to help support their spiritual journey. Families will go to cemeteries to be with the souls of the departed and build private altars with photos, memorabilia and favorite food and beverages of their lost loved ones. Day of the Dead is not recognized as an official public holiday.

It all started in 2016 on a quiet night with nothing to do. Newly minted Mexican resident, Dianna Clarkson was sitting in her Cabo San Lucas home when she declared, “What Cabo needs is a world-class jazz festival.” Eighteen months later, The Life Luxe Jazz Experience Los Cabos was born. “It was love at first sight,” says Clarkson of her adopted home of Los Cabos. “The jazz festival became my passion and a way to mix a music genre I have enjoyed for decades with the hospitality and beauty of my second home.” She and her partner, Terry Powell, sought advice from artists like Branford Marsalis, TS Monk, and production experts on how to produce a world-class concert. As jazz aficionados, however, they knew exactly what they wanted to make their festival stand out. “We’re determined to provide a superior music event and vacation experience that is both luxe and allencompassing,” Clarkson explained. The result is their “Jazz Experience of a Lifetime.” Last year’s inaugural weekend, nestled on the beach at the beautiful Pacifica Resort, featured the artistry of world-class musicians like Gregory Porter, Boney James, Keiko Matsui, and Mindi Abair, just to name a few. The event also held its promise to deliver topnotch music in an upscale destination for the hundreds of jazz enthusiasts in attendance. This year’s lineup includes Grammy nominated and winning arts: Gerald Albright, Alex Bugnon, Raul Midón, Roy Ayres, Average White Band, and Pieces of a Dream. Their success caught the attention of the Los Cabos government, who has named the Life Luxe Jazz Experience as its official annual jazz event, and will host the official 2019 Welcome Reception on the Plaza Mijares in San Jose del Cabo. The LLJ team has parlayed this into Jazzing Around Los Cabos partnerships, providing guests expanded opportunities to enjoy the best of Los Cabos. “In 2018 we concentrated on creating a luxurious atmosphere centered around amazing performances,” explained Powell. “This year, we’ve added a variety of exciting options in addition to the great music.” 2019’s must-do events include: A Dining-in-the-Dark Experience; The Spirit of Jazz Gospel Brunch; Sunset Cruise, featuring Cabos’s own Daline Jones and Diego Ramirez. Also central to the Life Luxe Jazz Experience is community outreach and is an official part of the musical weekend. “We believe that giving back is part of the luxe life, especially here in Los Cabos,” said Clarkson. “An important part of the LLJ mission is to leave a kind and caring foot print in the communities we live and do business.” 2018’s community outreach was Cabo Cares, a medical outreach effort of both locals and international medical support, that served over 300 residents with much needed medical attention and supplies. In 2019, the organization will give back through Cabo Ve (Cabo Sees), a vision outreach effort with local partners of the Lions Club International and volunteer doctors from the U.S. In addition to eye screenings and eyeglass distribution, Life Luxe Jazz plans to donate over 300 eye screening kits to teachers and raise money for local glaucoma and cataract surgeries. A major fundraising effort for Cabo Ve will be Delectable Darkness: A Sensuous Dining-inthe- Dark Experience. This intimate event creates a unique and memorable tasting occasion for blindfolded guests and tells a delicious love story though the creative intermingling of delectable darkness, cuisine, and the classic hits of the late, great jazz legend, Al Jarreau. Delectable Darkness will be held on Thursday, November 10th, 8:00 PM at the Mesquite Restaurant at the Vidanta. Locals are encouraged and welcome to attend this novel experience in support of the Los Cabos’ neediest residents. Space is limited. Tickets: $185 US per person. Sammy Hagar’s 72nd Birthday Bash at Cabo Wabo Cantina

On Thursday, October 3, Tito’s Vodka and Sancho’s hosted a fundraiser benefiting El Ranchito Rescue. There was a very successful raffle and auction, with 100% of the proceeds going directly to El Ranchito. The rescue collected over $2,000 USD at the event while guests sipped on 2x1 Tito’s Vodka cocktails and foot long hot dogs ($1 from every dog also went directly to the rescue). Local pups lounged on Sancho’s dog friendly patio while their humans anxiously hoped to be called as a raffle winner. Prizes included Tito’s Vodka dog toys, leashes, and shirts, along with gift certificates to many local restaurants, a boat cruise, a massage, handmade jewelry and more! As always, Sancho’s filled up their on-site donation box with tons of goodies for local animals in need. El Ranchito is a no-kill facility that cares for sick, abandoned, injured and abused animals in San José del Cabo. They are always in need of dog food, treats, medications, shampoos, cleaning supplies, bleach, soap, towels, sanitizing hand cleaner, paper towels, etc. El Ranchito also strives to educate the public through spay/neuter programs, adopting vs. buying information, and working with free clinics. They have a small and dedicated group of volunteers but are always looking for new helpers. Every year for almost 30 years, Sammy Hagar returns to his beloved Cabo Wabo Cantina, the cantina he built from the ground up and opened in 1990 when Cabo was nothing more than a little fishing village, to celebrate his birthday along with friends, Cabo locals, and fans who fly in from around the world. The multi-day event sells out every year with thousands of tickets sold via an online lottery system (many months in advance) for the chance to win access to the highly coveted tickets. A few of the special guest performers this year included Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell, who surprised fans on night one of the 3-day bash, and Michael Anthony, who is currently the bassist for the rock groups Chickenfoot and the Circle, and previously the bassist and background vocalist for Van Halen.
