Los Cabos (“the capes” in Spanish) is located on the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the State Capital. If you take a look at the "The Tip of Southern Baja" map on page 12 you can see that the highways and towns form a loop, which you can easily drive in one day. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful, and the winds are stronger and the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez side. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months.

“The aquarium of the world”

is how Jacques Cousteau described the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this "trap" and either stayed in the warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. In Southern Baja, however, it's not just about the ocean, in this naturally magical place the mountains meet the desert and the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pine-oak forests, and you can find wild mushrooms, wild horses and deer. Ready to explore?

Cabo San Lucas

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo Arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach (the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area), an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

San José del Cabo

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

The Corridor

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this highway you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, and championship golf courses. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, Nationally Protected coral reef that offers outstanding snorkeling and scuba diving. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and those who just want to get away from it all.

La Paz

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waisthighwater at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

Loreto

Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

ATMS

Dollars are accepted almost everywhere but you will usually get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate posted.

The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, Banregio, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the streets or marina will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

CASH OR CARD?

Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only establishments. Always ask beforehand and carry cash just in case. Keep in mind your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

GROCERIES

In Cabo San Lucas, Walmart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Walmart, La Comer, Chedraui Selecto or Soriana. Mercado Santa Carmelo or California Ranch Market are good options for specialty foods and dietary restrictions. If you need a quick grab, OXXO stores are reasonably priced convenience stores located all over town.

HOW DO I DIAL?

DRIVING

Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway. The cost varies from $63.00 to $75.00 pesos, depending on your destination. ALTO STOP

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa Maria Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are many charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos

Located in La Playa just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in

the area with 200 available slips for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

Buggy Tours, ATV/UTV Rentas, and Biking There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid Driver’s License. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike and taking a riding excursion, or maybe just a beach cruiser and joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at KM 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. March through May: This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout while enjoying nature. At Medano Beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.

KITE SURFING SNORKELING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkeling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock. Lover’s Beach

This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkeling in the area. This eight-fingered coral reef is about a 1.5-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles.

The 2019 Big Money/Big Fish tournaments are over, but there were some exciting highlights. Turnout for all of this year’s events – in late October and early November – had excellent team numbers, as well as some exceptional payouts. A Bisbee Black and Blue tournament record of $4,584,450 was paid out to the top eight team winners. Three teams received daily payouts of over $1 million per day. Day 1, Paul Beaullieu, aboard the Wild Hooker, landed a 466-pound black marlin earning his team $1.75 million. Day 2, Team True Grit’s owner, Jim Putman, brought a 498-pound black marlin to the scale for $1.29 million and Day 3, Team Tranquilo, angler Bill Pino caught the largest blue marlin landed during the three days at 577 pounds worth an impressive $1.41 million for the team. In early November, the Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot paid out over $1,000,000 to teams catching the largest yellowfin tuna, wahoo or dorado. Los Cabos resident John Domanic, Team Sirena, weighed in the third-largest yellowfin tuna ever caught in the event’s 21-year history earning his team $420,235 – the highest amount ever paid out in the event for a single tuna. With most boats heading out on the Pacific side where a few VW-size yellowfin tuna lurked, as evidenced by those brought to the scale during the WON Tuna Tournament that yielded 30 tuna over 100 pounds with 12 of those exceeding 200 pounds. Most people come to the Los Cabos area to avoid the looming cold winter back home, and are probably interested in fishing, so our area is a welcome fishing paradise wrapped in what many would consider springlike weather. Here in Cabo, the striped marlin are frolicking a few miles offshore around Land’s End to the north on the Pacific side in front of Cabo Falso. Mixed in are dorado, yellowfin, roosterfish, jack crevalle, and even a few sierra. That’s a catch list to envy! The landlubbers who prefer fishing the beaches with sand between their toes may find themselves dragging a nice-sized dorado or an occasional roosterfish or sierra to the shore when the surf lays down a bit. Or, for those who head north into the Sea of Cortez to fish, the highlight has been on the wahoo found near Vinorama, most of which were landed on slowtrolled bait, mainly caballito. Numbers have been limited, but they are more common than dorado, tuna, or any other gamefish being found. The wahoo have been mostly in the 20- to 35-pound class, with the largest being 43-pounds.

At East Cape (Los Barriles), the weather is changing as the north winds of winter begin to make their presence known. Savvy locals attempt to pick the inbetween days when the dreaded winds back off early in the morning. They stay close to shore and hope for a late-season wahoo or larger dorado. Then, the tinboaters slide into the calmer water and troll the sandy beaches in search of sierra or if lucky, a left-over smallish dorado or two … all the while looking over their shoulder for a wind line approaching from offshore. There are blustery days, but there are beautiful days, too. The problem is no one is fishing! Snowbirds have started to descend on La Paz to enjoy the sunshine and the new malecon, but the off-season has begun, and not many are fishing because the winds are sporadic. However, some folks go out, and on the days it isn’t bumpy, there are fish to be caught. Most surprising have been the big tuna hung on the south side of Cerralvo Island. Go figure. Everyone leaves, the fishermen are gone, and the big tuna show. These are tough critters ranging from 60- to 100-pounds, and though there weren’t many, those that do bite, only bite lighter line, which raises the bar when a powerful tuna crunches the bait. These fish demand 3- to 4-hours of backbreaking battle to get them to the boat. There’s still some decent dorado running around – 10- to 15-pounds or so, enough to keep it interesting. Mix in some bonito, jack crevalle, a few pargo and snapper, the occasional little roosterfish, and it could be a fun day. Traveling farther up to Loreto, the north winds seem to be more consistent, putting a dampener on the waning winter fishing. Oddly enough, there are still a few dorado to be found at Coronado Island.

The first day of the Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot, Team Sirena, with local owner John Domanic landed this 345-pound yellowfin tuna – the third-largest ever caught in the 21-year history of the event.

While the commercial hand line fishermen are working "Lobo" and landing yellowtail consistently, it and the nearby rock piles are the centers of the coolweather fishing attention. When the fish are biting at Lobo, the boats will spread out to the "50" Spot and any of the ten other bumps in between. Pargo, cabrilla, and baqueta are candidates for fillets for the cooler in this same area. For several weeks, many boats have been fishing the shoreline of Danzante. The bite was good enough to draw interest away from the small dorado still lurking offshore. The Danzante zone was boiling over with roosterfish and cabrilla pushing the bait schools to the surface where the birds did their divebomb routine. Sierra have begun chasing the schools of sardina out of Honeymoon Cove around the north point of Danzante. There are ample “Fishy” spots along the shores of Baja Sur to bend an angler’s rod and put a smile on their faces as the colder weather back home becomes just a faded memory for the moment. *

Humpback Whales Are Back!

Worldwide, whale watching as a tourist industry may generate more than $1 billion a year. There will always be an element of mystery about whales since they do appear at the surface for a few seconds. Knowing the basic statistics about a humpback whale does little to prepare you for the surprise and awe of seeing a 16 meter, 40 ton mammal all but completely lift itself out of the water then crash back into the sea sending spray 10 meters into the air. When a whale surfaces, the simple act of exhaling results in a ‘blow’ of spray and air that shoots up to four meters in the air as it empties 90 percent of the contents of its lungs in less than a second. The whale’s lung capacity is about the same volume as a small car. Then, when it breathes in and dives, it can stay submerged for up to 30 minutes. Humpback whales are one of the most exuberant of all whale species, and are celebrated for their energetic antics and haunting ‘songs’. During migration, male humpback whales often ‘sing’ complex, lengthy and distinctive songs to communicate their presence to females to entice them to mate. They use syllables and rhyming phrases with a complex sequence that can last for a few moments or for hours. The ‘songs’ change subtly each year and different humpback populations have different songs. Unlike humans, whales don't exhale to produce sound, nor do they have vocal cords. Humpbacks have a larynx-like structure in their throats. While the reason whales sing isn't clear, scientists believe males sing to attract females and challenge males. The song may also be used to find food or to herd fish. At one time, the humpback whale was brought to the brink of extinction by the whaling industry. Today, the species has partially recovered and has a conservation status of "least concern" on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. While the humpback population numbers of around 80,000 put it at minimal risk for extinction, the animals remain at risk from illegal whaling, garbage, noise pollution, collisions with ships, and death from entanglement with fishing gear. Humpback whale numbers continue to increase. The species is curious and approachable, making humpbacks the mainstay of the whale tourism industry. They are already in Los Cabos again, welcome to another exciting season! *

Lovers Beach Getting there is an adventure in itself, since it is reachable only by boat, kayak or any other water vessel. The easiest way to get there is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Your captain will cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean (Divorce Beach). This side is very dangerous for swimming, so swim on Lover’s Beach side only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. Tips: On occasion there are a few vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services.

Medano If you’re looking for the action, this is where it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by a lot of souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No gracias.” Water sports are available such as jet skis, parasailing, flyboarding, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and more. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

Chileno Chileno Beach is a very popular location for snorkeling and swimming due to its calm waters. You’ll find tide pools at the left end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. Public restrooms and showers are available, as well as a handicap ramp that takes you right to the beach. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near KM 14 of the main highway. Tips: Snorkeling visibility is often better in the early mornings and you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours. Bring snorkeling gear!

Santa Maria Santa Maria is a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkeling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. However, the beach does have brand new bathrooms and palapas. Location: Traveling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.

Palmilla Palmilla Beach is known for its family friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes and the One&Only Hotel. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at KM 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available.

Balandra A stunning bay in La Paz (the State's Capital) that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist-high water that is crystal clear. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock.” You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra! Location: A two hour drive from Cabo San Lucas. Once you're in La Paz, follow the main drag along the boardwalk, pass Costa Baja Resort and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed.

Cerritos Cerritos Beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. You can rent a boogie board or surf board or even take a surf lesson. Location: Exit at KM 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Tips: Come prepared with food, drinks and beach gear. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful, so swim with caution.

What is your favorite route to run in Los Cabos? I really like trails! One of my favorites routes is on the hills in the Tezal area in Cabo San Lucas. The trail starts behind Costco (for specific directions call Running Tours Los Cabos) and the cool part about it is that you can do as many miles as you like. To get to the top you most run around 2 miles from the starting point, there you can decide to come back down or keep going all the way for 9 more miles! On the way up you will hear lots of different species of birds, this is the real Cabo feeling because you are surrounded by one hundred year-old cactus and beautiful trees that you only see here in the Baja Sur. When you get to the top you will see the most amazing view of the Cabo bay and the arch, just as beautiful at sunrise or sunset. I love that contact with nature and how it makes you feel grateful for being there and for being able to RUN!

How long have you been in Los Cabos? I moved to Cabo in 2012 to pursue my dream of living by the beach and working in health and wellness.

What inspired you to start a health food business? I worked with ModuVated from 2012-2015. I have always been involved/interested in everything having to do with being and eating healthy and working with ModuVated helped me see how many avenues of health and wellness there are. The meal prep concept came after my daughter was born in 2015. I was a new mom with so many responsibilities and I really didn’t have the time nor energy to be cooking dinner overnight for my whole family. While my daughter napped on Sundays, I would spend that time making easy meals and salads for the week that we could just reheat on the spot. Friends that would come over loved the look and feel of an organised fridge, and more so all the money we were saving each month by not throwing away food! I was inspired to grow the concept little by and little, and 2 years later its become my full time passion. Tell us about Sano Plate. Sano Plate is a labor of love. Food is so personal and it’s always so cool to me that I get to cook for people for a living. We strive to use all local ingredients and meats, and our goal is to always support

and promote our community when we can. This year, we’ve been able to expand and open the restaurant side of the business. We’re located at the Los Cabos Organic Farmer’s Market in Pedregal. It’s been a great addition to the meal prep business, as people who aren’t ready to commit to the meal plans can still come get healthy meals and juices week long. We have also launched our website, where folks can just go online to choose the meal plan or a la carte meals and get it all delivered directly to their homes! Eating healthy on vacation is not easy, what would recommend to our readers that want to stay healthy while visiting Los Cabos? Come to Sano Plate! –laughs– just kidding. It’s always a struggle to eat clean while vacationing, especially in this paradise where chips and beer are around every corner. But this is what I try to do when I travel: 1. Stay hydrated - By drinking water throughout the day, you are allowing your body and metabolism to function efficiently and keep you balanced. 2. Watch the salt - When eating out, try to season your food with fresh ingredients like lime or fresh herbs. Take the salt shaker off the table. 3. Swap your carbs - Dip carrots, bell peppers or cucumber into your guacamole or salsas. I find this still allows you to savour the good fats without filling up on empty calories. 4. Drink smarter - Go for the light beer, ask for skinny margaritas with NO salt, cut your tequila or vodka with mineral water and just a SPLASH of juice. This avoids all the nasty sugar and calories that causing bloating and hangovers.

Los Cabos is naturally beautiful. If you were to recommend to our readers a special place to meditate and practice yoga, where would it be? I really enjoy going to Cabo Bello beach during the week. Also Pedregal beach during the week is a nice option, you can walk all the way to the left and usually there’s no one in between the rocks, which create a perfect atmosphere to put your feet in the sand, observe and hear the ocean and simply be. We live in a world of constant “doing”. It is so necessary to find time to simply be, connect with yourself and the nature around you. Taking a really deep breath and staying with it can be so helpful in becoming present to see all the beautiful little things Los Cabos has to offer.

The earliest turtles date from the Middle Jurassic period and are more ancient than snakes or crocodilians. By counting the rings formed and stacked on the shells it is possible to estimate aproximately the age of a turtle. The largest living turtles are the leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea), which can be 6.6 feet in length and weigh 2,000 pounds. The largest ever known turtle was Archelon ischyros from the Late Cretaceous period and was up to 15 feet long. The smallest turtle is the speckled padloper tortoise of South Africa which is 3.1 inches in length. Turtles have bony or cartilaginous shells that act as a shield. The upper shell is called the carapace and the lower shell is called the plastron. Depending on the species the color of shells may vary from brown, black, or olive green; to red, orange, yellow, or also grey markings, spots, lines and markings. Turtles are cold-blooded and are classified as amniotes like other species of reptiles, birds, and mammals that live in or around water, which means they breathe air and do not lay eggs underwater. The main difference between a turtle and a tortoise is that a turtle may be limited to only aquatic species, and a tortoise usually refers to any land-dwelling, non-swimming "chelonian" (turtle). Tortoises have heavy shells, in contrast, aquatic turtles have light shells to avoid sinking, and for swimming faster and with more agility. The vertebrae of turtles have an S-shaped curve to allow for neck retraction back into the shell. And depending on how they retract their necks into their shells, turtles are divided into two groups: the suborder Pleurodira retracts the neck to the side and anterior to the shoulders, and the suborder Cryptodira retracts the neck straight back, between the shoulders. Turtles have strong jaws and rigid beaks to cut and chew food. Carnivorous turtles have sharp ridges for slicing through their prey, and herbivorous turtles have serrated ridges to cut through plants. Turtles can´t stick out their tongues to catch food. Sea turtles usually feed on jellyfish, sponges, and other soft sea foods. All sea turtles breathe air and must surface at regular intervals to refill their lungs. Terrestrial tortoises have short, sturdy feet. Amphibious turtles have feet that are webbed. Sea turtles have flippers instead of feet.

Turtles have color vision and exceptional night vision. Turtles make sounds when communicating. Some vocalizations serve to create group cohesion when migrating. Tortoises are vocal when courting and mating. Turtles lay eggs that are soft and leathery. In some species, temperature determines whether an egg develops into a male or a female. Eggs are put in holes dug in the mud or sand and then they are covered and left to incubate. A sea turtle’s nest may contain up to 200 eggs. Depending on the species, eggs will take about 50 to 100 days to hatch. When hatching, the baby turtles (hatchlings) emerge from their shell and head towards the sea. During their crawl to the ocean they can be eaten by birds, crabs, raccoons, dogs or other predators, and more risks await them at sea. One of a thousand baby turtles will reach adulthood. Turtles reach sexual maturity at different ages. Some at a few years old, others reach sexual maturity at 50 years old. Sea Turtles live most of their lives at sea and mate at sea too. Females return to the precise location where they were born to lay their eggs. It is thought that they use the Earth’s magnetic field as a means of navigation. Males, on the contrary, never set foot on land again after being born. Sea turtles land on the beaches of Mexico between June and November each year. In the Pacific Coast they mainly arrive in Mazatlan, Costalegre, Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo, Oaxaca and Baja California Sur (San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas); and in the Atlantic Coast in Yucatan (Akumal and Rio Lagartos). Mexico is considered as the country of sea turtles. Seven species of turtles reproduce here: Green turtle (Chelonia mydas), Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), Leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), Black turtle (Chelonia agassizi), Olive Ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), and Kemp's Ridley turtle (Lepidochelys kempii). The only one that does not nest in Mexico is the Australian Kikila turtle (Chelonia depressa).

Sea Turtles in Baja: Five species of sea turtles (Hawksbill, Loggerhead, Leatherback, Green Turtle and Olive Ridley) are found along Mexico's Baja California peninsula. Some nest in The East Cape of Los Cabos. The Olive Ridley, also known as the golfina, nests there from June to December. The golfina can grow 26 inches long and weigh 90 pounds. The leatherback, nests there from November through February and can grow to 70 inches long and weigh 1,300 pounds. Turtle release: from July to October you can participate during the nesting season (egg laying) of the turtles in, and during the hatching season (turtle releasing) from September to December. These activities take place at many different beaches of Cabo and on the Pacific Side too. A great place to reach out to find out about participating is ASUPMATOMA, A.C. Throughout 23 seasons of work they have protected around 12,000 olive ridley turtle nests and released to the sea more than 1,000,000 baby turtles. From July to January they have nightly patrols to protect the nesting turtles and to relocate nests to incubation sites to ensure the largest number of offspring turtles make it to the ocean. Final fun fact: many times turtles have 13 patches on their shells, making it a symbolic animal for the 13 moons in a yearly cycle. *

When I tell people that I live in Los Cabos the conversation typically goes this way: the person is extremely surprised, and says something along the lines of "oh wow!,” followed by a “what do you do down here?” or “what brought you here?” However, a common question I also get is “how do you manage to eat healthy here?,” and my answer is always “it's actually VERY easy and accessible!” I assume that this question is rooted from the fact that the concept of Mexican food seems to be unhealthy; refried beans, chips, cheese, fried food, flour tortillas, crema (creme), etc...so if you see it that way the answer is yes, that is not the healthiest diet. The main misconception is that this is the only option for food available in Mexico, this is especially not correct when it comes to food in Baja, where 100% local fresh seafood, fish and organic produce is widely available. As it is commonly known, this area of the World is greatly abundant in fish and seafood, which make very healthy and clean food options. What is not as commonly known is the fact that in the midst of the Los Cabos desert landscape, there are also areas with fertile soil where produce is farmed, making it easy to have locally grown vegetables and fruit on your plate every day. There are a few companies that buy from local farmers and deliver the produce right to your doorstep, and many restaurants pride themselves in offering locally sourced ingredients in their menus.

Here are a few great options to eat local and healthy in Los Cabos: A SIMPLE CATCH OF THE DAY - Fish, fish fish! We are in Los Cabos, which is surrounded by the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean, so there's no doubt why we have a delicious catch of the day option on almost every restaurant menu in Los Cabos. Every place will prepare it differently, and it's usually served with a side of vegetables and rice.

LOCAL SEAFOOD - If you go to any traditional seafood restaurant such as Los Claros, Mariscos Michiacan, El Toro Guero, etc., order a ceviche, fresh clams, scallops, oysters or an aguachile (this one will be spicy!). These dishes are very low in fat and calories, just watch out for all of those chips!

SASHIMI and SUSHI - I always say that the best sushi I've ever had is in Cabo. The sashimi is as fresh as it gets and it's very easy to digest. You will find similar Cabosignature dishes in most sushi places, my personal favorite is the serranito with tuna.

MEXICAN FOOD - Mexican food can be healthy! Try tacos with corn tortilla instead of flour (this is the traditional way to eat tacos anyway), pozole, guacamole, chile relleno without the fried batter, and of course all the seafood without it being fried. These are only a few examples among many delicious and healthy dishes.

Las Posadas is a tradition that has been taking place in Mexico for more than 400 years. These nine days of religious observance start on December 16 through Christmas Eve on December 24. The celebration traditionally began with a candle lit procession with individuals dressed up as Joseph and Mary leading the way. In modern times, Posadas do not always include a processional and can look more like a fiesta with tamales, piñatas, and more. Many businesses in and around Los Cabos will also celebrate and recognize their hardworking staff with a party called a “Christmas Posada.”

Life Luxe Jazz Festival The official jazz festival of Los Cabos returned on November 8-9 at the OMNIA Los Cabos Day Club with a line-up of world-class musicians. The festival was nestled on the breathtaking Sea of Cortez, where guests enjoyed the first-class hospitality of the OMNIA Los Cabos Day Club, and lounging in luxury as they took in the artistic genius of jazz greats like Gerald Albright, Alex Bugnon, Raul Midón, Roy Ayers, Incognito, The Average White Band, Kirk Whalum and many more. The set up was impressive, with an enormous stage and equipment that was shipped down from the United States, along with food and drink stations, a cigar rolling station, festival merchandise and more! On October 23rd-25th, fisherman from around the world headed out at dawn to await the daily shotgun start with dreams of “catching the big one” and winning millions. Daily weigh ins, vendor booths and entertainment can be found along the Cabo marina, in front of Puerto Paraiso Mall.
