Los Cabos (“the capes” in Spanish) is located on the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the State Capital. If you take a look at the "The Tip of Southern Baja" map on page 12 you can see that the highways and towns form a loop, which you can easily drive in one day. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful, and the winds are stronger and the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez side. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months.

“The aquarium of the world”

is how Jacques Cousteau described the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this "trap" and either stayed in the warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez.

In Southern Baja, however, it's not just about the ocean, in this naturally magical place the mountains meet the desert and the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pine-oak forests, and you can find wild mushrooms, wild horses and deer.

Cabo San Lucas

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking.

The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo Arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach (the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area), an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

San José del Cabo

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

The Corridor

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this highway you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, and championship golf courses. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, Nationally Protected coral reef that offers outstanding snorkeling and scuba diving. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and those who just want to get away from it all.

La Paz

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists.

La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waisthighwater at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

Loreto

Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

ATMS

Dollars are accepted almost everywhere but you will usually get your change back in pesos.

The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate posted.

The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, Banregio, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the streets or marina will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

CASH OR CARD?

Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only establishments.

Always ask beforehand and carry cash just in case. Keep in mind your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

GROCERIES

In Cabo San Lucas, Walmart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Walmart, La Comer, Chedraui Selecto or Soriana. Mercado Santa Carmelo or California Ranch Market are good options for specialty foods and dietary restrictions.

If you need a quick grab, OXXO stores are reasonably priced convenience stores located all over town.

HOW DO I DIAL?

DRIVING

Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway. The cost varies from $63.00 to $75.00 pesos, depending on your destination.

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa Maria Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are many charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost.

Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day.

THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities.

Located in La Playa just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in

the area with 200 available slips for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels.

FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is.

What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%.

Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

Buggy Tours, ATV/UTV Rentas, and Biking There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid Driver’s License. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike and taking a riding excursion, or maybe just a beach cruiser and joining a guided bicycle tour of town.

Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve.

Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown.

Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, backcountry UTV and ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are

appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation.

Jet Skis, Parasailing, Banana Boats and more Go to Medano Beach for a day full of fun water activities. There are numerous options along the beach, such as jet skis, banana boat cruises, aquatic bikes, SUP rentals, and more! Water Parks Wild Canyon Adventures has recently opened its brand new water park section, which you can access with your park day pass, a perfect way to spend a full day of fun family activities. Wild Wet Fun Water Park, located about 30 minutes from San José del Cabo, has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms and a pirate ship. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at KM 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right.

The hike leads the adventurous to a majestically beautiful oasis where everyone can swim and even dive into the cool, serene waters. Be sure to pack a lunch, and take plenty of water.

There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. The cost is $6 US per person to access the easy hike to the clear-water falls.

SEASONS June through November: The summer months are known to be the best as the Southern Hemisphere’s swells send great waves to the Pacific, Cabo San Lucas, San José and the East Cape.

December through February: East Cape and Costa Azul are on the flatter side. The Pacific can be good this time of year because it’s exposed to the west swell.

March through May: This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout while enjoying nature.

At Medano Beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.

KITE SURFING SNORKELING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkeling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports.

Pelican Rock A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock.

Lover’s Beach

This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers.

Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove.

Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination.

Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkeling in the area. This eight-fingered coral reef is about a 1.5-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles.

The Los Cabos Big Game Charter Boat Classic, an angler event sponsored by Los Cabos Tourism Board, guaranteed $40,000 plus in cash purse prizes.

According to tournament director Dan Jacobs, “They had over 450 registered anglers from throughout the U.S., Canada, UK, Australia fish on more than 100 charter boats from San Jose and Cabo. The anglers stayed at some 60 properties in Cabo during the week. It's great to see the anglers, families, and friends booking the charter boats and resorts so that they can experience a big game tournament without any entry fees required.”

No point reviewing all the fantastic fishing we had in 2019. Like last month’s holidays – all of that is old news as we peer into the future of 2020.

Welcome to our alternative sportfishing universe with a variety of fishing challenges, ranging from first-timers to seasoned veterans offering memorable catches of billfish, tuna, wahoo, and roosterfish, that will become some of those “memorable moments” to be cherished for a lifetime.

Offshore on the Pacific side, the full spectrum of species seems to be in play. For the billfish “junkies,” there are still a few sailfish along with the larger blue marlin on the hunt from Cabo Falso to the outer banks farther north. Don’t be surprised if your group stumbles into numbers of striped marlin frantically chasing the fleeing baitfish on the surface eager to inhale those big lures that are being trolled off the stern.

Then there are the yellowfin tuna ranging in sizes from football to several hundred pounds lurking beneath the giant schools of frolicking porpoise looking for an easy meal. The wahoo, one of the faster saltwater fish capable of speeds nearing 50-mph are still in the neighborhood and adding to the excitement.

For those who prefer to stay closer to shore, there

are the exotic, strange-looking roosterfish, joined by colorful dorado, as well as the hard-fighting jack crevalle. Don’t be surprised if there are a few sierra with a mouthful of teeth in the mix.

Heading up into the Sea of Cortez at Puerto Los Cabos, the yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and dorado are scattered on the Gordo Banks, Cardon, La Fortuna, and off Punta Gorda. Live bait is working best, especially the chihuil when available; they are like candy for wahoo. The Gordo Banks are producing yellowfin tuna over 200-pounds, with even larger fish lost in the area. Strips of squid, small skipjack, chihuil, and caballito have also been working.

Dorado are mixed in as well, but are scattered.

It sounds as though there was some roosterfish action farther offshore while trolling for dorado and wahoo – nice-sized fish to 30 pounds. Also, a couple of yellowtail, one was an impressive 38-pounds, and there was a 70-pound Almaco jack, taken while chunk fishing for tuna on the Gordo Banks.

Billfish are limited off San Jose del Cabo, a scattering of striped marlin and a couple of small blues.

Up at East Cape, seasonal north winds are dominating the fishing. In between blows, there are still dorado just 10 miles offshore near the series of shark buoys. In the same area, there are both striped and blue marlin, sailfish, and even an occasional spearfish. “The water is still warm, and the fish are still biting,” volunteered one local captain.

Up at Las Arenas on the south side of Cerralvo Island near La Paz, anglers have found a few giant

yellowfin tuna plus a shot at wahoo early mornings before the winds pick up.

Same story in La Paz – the best bet is either to fish only in the early mornings before the telltale wind line appears to the north or, try to fish the calm days in between the windy days. Most of the fishing is inshore for jack crevalle, snapper, and cabrilla, although some larger pargo were reportedly lost.

Bonito schools can either be problematic or a lot of fun, depending on your point of view.

There are still some small schools of dorado running around with most fish in the 10- to 15-pound class.

When winds are down, there’s some excellent action with bait on light tackle for some better grade of tuna in the 40- to 80-pound range that can be fierce battles on smaller line that gets them to bite.

Rapalas, like the darker, deep-runners, also picked up some wahoo.

Loreto’s wintertime yellows play “hide and seek” on different high spots both north and south of town and around the islands. There are fewer fish at each of the dozen popular spots. The 25-pound yellowtail are a rare addition to the pinto bass, orange snapper, and the few grouper and cabrilla that are deep enough to ignore the wind.

If it's not a hot bite, expect to see more boats searching the many rock piles for next week’s “go-to” yellowtail action. *

The brave journey of gray whales to mexican waters

Every winter, hundreds of Pacific gray whales return to their traditional breeding and birthing grounds in sheltered Magdalena Bay on Mexico’s Baja Peninsula.

Their migration from Alaska's Bering Sea to the warm waters of Baja's Pacific lagoons is the longest mammal migration on Earth. Nearly hunted to extinction in the past, these gentle giants have made a dramatic comeback. Friendly and engaging, they are often intrigued with humans, swimming right up to our open boats.

After 8 years the young gray whales will reach sexual maturity and can begin mating and reproducing.

Calves can swim as soon as they are born, can double their weight in about three months, and double their length in about two years.

A female will give birth only once in two years, usually to a single calf after a 12-month gestation period. Most gray whales are born in the lagoons of Baja California, and as with all cetaceans, the young are born underwater and are able to swim immediately. The calves depend on a diet of rich milk for at least six months.

They are weaned the following summer at seven to eight months, though young whales will often stay with their mothers for an additional one or two years.

In terms of lifespan, a healthy gray whale is estimated to an average lifespan of 50 – 70 years. Gray whales prefer to stay close to shore. As a result, they are one of the more recognizable whale species. They are bottom feeders and hunt for their prey by swimming to the bottom of the ocean, turning on their side, and scooping up sediment from the sea floor.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) declared last season’s whale die-off an “unusual mortality event,” a designation that triggers greater scrutiny and allocation of more resources to determine the cause. Many have little body fat, leading experts to suspect the die-off is caused by declining food sources in the dramatically warming waters of the northern Bering Sea and Chukchi Sea off Alaska.

International bans on commercial whaling in the 1930s and ’40s helped the species recover. With the population again recovered, there are now about 27,000 North Pacific grays, which is close to their historic population.

We are hoping that the whales will come back healthy this year and come to visit us in Mexican waters to give birth to their adorable playful babies. *

Lovers Beach Getting there is an adventure in itself, since it is reachable only by boat, kayak or any other water vessel. The easiest way to get there is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Your captain will cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities.

Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean (Divorce Beach). This side is very dangerous for swimming, so swim on Lover’s Beach side only.

Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch.

Tips: On occasion there are a few vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services.

Medano If you’re looking for the action, this is where it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see.

Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador.

Tips: Be prepared to be approached by a lot of souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No gracias.” Water sports are available such as jet skis, parasailing, flyboarding, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and more.

Chileno Chileno Beach is a very popular location for snorkeling and swimming due to its calm waters. You’ll find tide pools at the left end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. Public restrooms and showers are available, as well as a handicap ramp that takes you right to the beach.

Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near KM 14 of the main highway.

Tips: Snorkeling visibility is often better in the early mornings and you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours. Bring snorkeling gear!

DISCOVER

Santa Maria Santa Maria is a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkeling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. However, the beach does have brand new bathrooms and palapas.

Location: Traveling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area.

Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.

Palmilla Palmilla Beach is known for its family friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes and the One&Only Hotel.

Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis.

Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at KM 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel.

Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available.

Balandra A stunning bay in La Paz (the State's Capital) that will take your breath away.

You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist-high water that is crystal clear.

Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock.” You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra!

Location: A two hour drive from Cabo San Lucas. Once you're in La Paz, follow the main drag along the boardwalk, pass Costa Baja Resort and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach.

Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed.

Cerritos Cerritos Beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. You can rent a boogie board or surf board or even take a surf lesson.

Location: Exit at KM 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway.

Watch the markers and look for the signs.

Tips: Come prepared with food, drinks and beach gear. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful, so swim with caution.

ADVENTURES IN LA PAZ

a Paz is the capital city of Baja California Sur and it is located 81 kilometers (50 miles) north of the town of Todos Santos and 202 kilometers (126 miles) north of Cabo San Lucas. The history of La Paz is very vast but one interesting fact is that the first European to arrive in La Paz was Spaniard Fortún Ximénes in 1533 and that he thought that he had found an island. La Paz is a bay on the Sea of Cortez, also called the Gulf of California.

In 2005, UNESCO declared 244 islands and protected areas of the Sea of Cortez a World Heritage Site. There are hundreds of species of fish, including the gracious whale shark, and more than 25 species of marine mammals, like playful dolphins in this sea. It is a breeding ground for sea lions, marine turtles, and whales; there are approximately 9 whale species, 22 dolphin species, and 5 turtle species. It is also home to 30% of the world’s marine mammals, and 39% of the world’s fish species. Plus about 4,848 species of macroinvertebrates and 626 forms of macro algae are also found here. The Sea of Cortez has about 900 islands, providing nesting and habitats for hundreds of resident and migratory birds, and most of the islands are uninhabited. The Sea of Cortez was called the World’s Aquarium by the famous oceanographer Jacques Cousteau.

La Paz has amazing sunsets and a calm ambiance, and it has a very pretty Malecón (boardwalk) with many sculptures, benches and food spots. From Cabo the easiest way to La Paz is to take Highway 1 to Todos Santos, then go around Todos Santos via the bypass road and then continue on to La Paz. It is under 2 hours driving from Cabo.

Vacationing in Los Cabos, one may be tempted to do nothing more than decompress poolside with a margarita at arm’s length — and another on the way once that’s gone. Others, however, may want to look beyond the cape’s enticements and explore Baja California Sur further. La Paz, the state capital of 250,000, is the perfect destination for such an expedition.

The vibe of this laid-back coastal city is found in its name, which translates as “The Peace”. Not nearly as touristic as Los Cabos, one can find the “real Mexico” in the town’s historic center, its restaurants and in the genial attitude of locals, known fittingly as paceños (peaceful ones).

Just north of the city on the Pichilingue Peninsula, it’s not unusual to find oneself alone – or nearly so – on a pristine beach with waters so blue and clear, friends back home will enviably mistake social media photos of La Paz’s playas for the Caribbean.

For those who seek adventure, the island of Isla Espiritu Santo and its surrounding atolls are an aquatic sportsman’s paradise. Jacques Cousteau himself referred to the waters off Espiritu Santo as the “world’s aquarium”.

Finally, there are enough casual and fine dining options here to satisfy even the most particular gastronome. Fresh seafood is the name of the game in La Paz and the catch of the day is on the menu nearly everywhere.

Itinerary 1: CULTURAL TOUR Unsuccessfully colonized by Hernán Cortés in the 16th century, La Paz was eventually settled in the 18th and briefly became the capital of all of Baja California in 1829. Much of the town’s history and culture can be absorbed via a leisurely stroll around the town center and malecón. Begin at Plaza Constitución, the city’s zocalo. The town square is dominated by the Misión de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, founded by Jesuit Missionaries in 1720.

The postcard-perfect coastline along the Pichilingue Peninsula is a mecca for beach goers. Wide sandy banks and calm, glistening waters tempt during arid La Paz’s typically warm sunny days. Most visitors start at Playa Balandra, an impossibly aquamarine bay surrounded by desert hills. Paddle boards and kayaks can be rented to explore the coves and mangroves in this shallow bay.

While stunning, Playa Pichilingue or La Paz’s largest beach, Playa Tecolote, are vastly more swimmable than Balandra. Additionally, both have restaurants and other services.

Visitors pull up a table in the sand at Playa Pichilingue’s La Luna Bruja restaurant and order buckets of cold cervezas and fish prepared zarandeado style. At Playa Tecolote, two restaurants entice — Restaurant Bar Tecolote and the smaller La Palapa Azul. The drill for this itinerary is “Swim, eat, repeat.”

Itinerary 3: LOOKING FOR ADVENTURE For those wanting to channel their “inner Hemingway”, this is the place. Fishermen can book charters with local outfitters such as Tailhunter International. For those who prefer to swim with, not eat, sea life, the opportunity to snorkel or dive with docile whale sharks with tour company Baja Expeditions can be a life-changing experience.

An adventurer’s highlight are the islands offshore of La Paz known collectively by the largest, Isla Espiritu Santo. Join a small group of like-minded adventurers on a single day panga trip to the islands with Espiritu and Baja Tours. After exploring the archipelago and enjoying lunch on a deserted beach, the tour culminates with an opportunity to snorkel with a resident sea lion colony.

Itinerary 4: GASTRO TOUR With its location on the Sea of Cortez and proximity to the Pacific, La Paz is one of the best places for seafood in Mexico. Local farms supply vegetables, fruit and meat.

For a taste, start with a morning jaunt to Mercado Madero. Then visit one of the city’s casual mariscos joints for lunch — locals flock to Mariscos El Molinito on the malecón or Mariscos La Güera north of town. At La Güera, the molcajetes (hardened lava bowls) contain generously portioned morsels of shrimp, octopus, clams and other oceanic delights.

There’s also street food in La Paz, with vendors selling chocolate clams, ceviche and fish tacos. The best of the latter is said to be found at Tacos El Estadio near the center. Get there early — when the fresh fish is gone, so is the cart. For dinner, check out the recently opened Tatanka Baja Fish & Steakhouse from Carlos Valdez, formerly of the town’s famous Buffalo Grill. The chef expertly blends ingredients for ceviches and tostadas and serves hearty dishes of grilled fish and beef. *

9th Annual Caboholics Convention

Each year, Caboholics flock to Cabo to spend a week catching up with old friends, enjoying activities and giving back to the community and local businesses. How do you know if you’re a Caboholic? Their website explains “Most people become aware there is a problem soon after their first trip to Cabo. Upon returning home, they may find it difficult to focus on work, even when they try not to think about Cabo, thoughts and images continue to fill their mind. The Caboholics organize several affordable events throughout the week of the convention including a meet & greet, pool party, boat cruises, bar crawl, cocktail tastings, a ride through town on a fire truck and more! @Caboholics

Trail Run El Sargento 2020

This race with a cause will support youth sports training in the community of El Sargento. Categories include: 5K (Recreational Walk) for $300 pesos, 7K for $400 pesos, 7K x 4 (Mixed Relays) for $1,200 pesos per team, 11K for $400 pesos, or 21K for $450 pesos. The best time for the men's and women's branch of the 21K, and the best time in the 7K X 4 Mixed Relay category will obtain registration and free accommodation for the Duke City Marathon that will be held on October 18, 2020 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. The 8th Edition of the Los Cabos International Film Festival took place on November 13-17 with over $6,000,000 pesos in prize money awarded to the winners. This year the festival featured voices of fabulous women in cinema, highlighting the impact of women in the film industry, using the tagline and hashtag “Mujeres Fantásticas.” This 8th Edition included two days of red carpet galas featuring the films The Irishman and Jojo Rabbit with many stars in attendance including fan favorites Robert De Niro, Yalitza Aparicio, and Eiza González. During the closing ceremony, four very special awards were presented. The tribute to Excellence in Cinematography was awarded to Ellen Kuras, Mexican director Tatiana Huezo and American director Ira Sachs both received Spotlight awards, and the International Star Award went to Eiza González for her contribution to the visibility of Latin talent in the global film industry.

Direct from Nashville at Cachet Beach CLUB Cachet Beach Club at Cabo Villas Beach Resort and Cachet Beach Hotel Los Cabos brought Blazing and Sony Recording Artists Brother Trouble and Hannah Dasher to Cabo San Lucas on December 8 for their “Direct From Nashville” country music concert on the beach!

Brother Trouble is a country music duo with brothers Mark Sutton and Jason Sutton. Living in Nashville, Tennessee, the brothers are regular performers at Nashville hot spot Wildhorse Saloon. They are also past winners of Kenny Chesney's "Next Big Star" and have even opened for Kenney Chesney on tour. Their unique sound and enjoyable lyrics had guests on their feet dancing the night away. Hannah Dasher is a Nashville transplant from Georgia, currently signed to Sony/ATV Nashville and working on her debut album, Heavy. According to her biography: “Hannah recently celebrated her first songwriting cut on Brad Paisley's new Love and War album. The track entitled, "Go To Bed Early”, also features Hannah on background vocals.” Her spunky personality and amazing vocals were a welcome addition to the fun Country evening under the stars.

Sabor a Cabo by American Express Known by local foodies as the “event of the year”, Sabor a Cabo by American Express held their annual International food and wine festival on Saturday, November 30 at Club Campestre in San José del Cabo. The festival gathers more than 3,000 people to taste samples from 60 restaurants, concluding with a spectacular concert. As in previous years, there was an extensive assortment of wines by more than 80 winemakers, tequilas and mezcals, along with traditional cocktails. The entertainers for this year’s event included Spanish signer Ana Torroja, and wildly popular Columbian singer and songwriter Maluma with energetic back up dancers in neon outfits! Sabor a Cabo is one of the most important gastronomic festivals in Mexico. A culinary celebration where local ingredients, chefs, restaurants, wineries and the spectacular location merge into a sophisticated, fun and surprising night in Los Cabos.

Proceeds from this year’s event went to local fire fighters, the Red Cross, and the Los Cabos Children’s Foundation.
