In Destino Social, we invite you to relive our special cocktail event hosted by Diamante when we unveiled our Golf Edition cover.
“Have the time of your life, we’ll handle the bar”
We're also excited to share a heartwarming article by Christina Galullo. In it, she discusses ways we can help stray dogs and cats in our beloved Cabo San Lucas. It's a topic that touches our hearts deeply, and we hope it inspires you to make a difference in the lives of these furry friends. As we look back on 2023, we want to thank you, our dear readers, for another magical year. 3.- USD VS. PESOS? This is definitely one of the most controversial questions on the site! I am going to give you my personal opinion and response. When you travel to Canada, do you take Japanese Yen? No! Use the currency of the country you are visiting. That said, our hardworking waiters, maids, and service staff will not say no to USD, but remember that many need to stand in long lines to exchange these funds to pesos, and then they are subject to the exchange rate, too. Also, local banks do not accept ripped or torn bills, so please be mindful.
by F i ona Ba rfoo t I’m Fiona, a Cabo resident by way of Toronto and then Vancouver. Cabo was always my preferred travel destination, and it quickly won my heart! When Covid hit, I took the chance to re-evaluate my busy life and decided to quit my job and move closer to the sun, sand, and, of course, tacos! I am fluent in Spanglish and love cooking and hanging out with my three rescue dogs. In my past life, I was actively involved in Philanthropy and organizing gala fundraising events. I love to support local causes and spend Saturday mornings helping to feed and clothe the less fortunate here in my new home of Cabo. You can find me at the beach or one of our fabulous local restaurants when I am not working. In my spare time, I am connecting with the amazing folks on our Facebook page and answering all your questions about “Cabo: everything you need or want to know!” Today, I will discuss the top 5 most asked questions on the Facebook page.
1.- IS CABO SAFE? This is one of the most frequently asked questions. It’s always good to remember that everyone has different experiences when it comes to travel. Many of our members have never left their home country, while some are well-traveled. My answer is always YES: Cabo is safe. Don’t do here what you wouldn’t do at home. Like in any city, you may find it if you go looking for trouble. Get out of your resort and see what Cabo has to offer. Cabo is a very safe destination for both tourists and locals.
2.- CAN I DRINK THE WATER? Everybody is different. I speak to locals who drink the water with no issue, but if you are traveling here and aren’t used to the water, why ruin your vacation with a tummy ache? Most restaurants, resorts, and hotels have a water filtration system, that is also used to make the ice. Your veggies and fruits will be washed in that water, too. If you are sensitive, use bottled water (including for brushing your teeth!).
8
4.- TACOS: THE BEST! Tacos- is there anything better? We get a lot of questions regarding where to go for the best tacos and Mexican food in general. What I love about Cabo is that we have everything from a local taco stand outside the tourist zone to 5-star restaurants, so there is definitely something for everyone and every budget. I love to try new places that are a little off the beaten path and have something authentic. Of course, being so close to the ocean, don’t forget to try fish, octopus, and shrimp tacos. Que rico! You can also take a guided “taco tour” and experience lots of fan favorites.
5.- BEACHES: We get many questions about the beach. I mean, you are here to have your feet in the sand and a drink in your hand, right? Here are my top 3: Medano: busy and fun. It’s a party! Medano Beach is packed with vendors. It’s a swimmable beach, and you have a fabulous selection of restaurants and bars right there. Chairs and umbrellas are available for rent, and you can enjoy beach food and drink service. Cerritos: one of my favorites! Cerritos is a surf beach that is more low-key than Medano and about 40 minutes outside of the tourist center. With limited vendors, it has a chill vibe. There are a handful of bars and restaurants along the beach and a few hotels if you choose to make a weekend of it. Surf’s up! Palmilla: a calm beach frequented by locals and located just beyond the luxurious community of The One & Only Palmilla. Get here early if you want a palapa, or bring your own chairs, umbrella, and cooler. There are limited services for food or bathrooms here—a fantastic spot to watch the sunset.
Congratulations, everyone! We just made it through another blistering summer. My name is Pastor Rick. I’m the founder and pastor of Cabo Beach Church— which is now going on its fourth year. My faith journey started on a beach in Santa Monica, California, decades ago. I was in a hard season of life. I had just filed for bankruptcy on my third tech start-up that never turned the corner to profitability and ran out of financing options, as it was smack in the middle of the 2000 dot-com bubble. Remember that doozy? In the months following my bankruptcy filing, I spent a lot of mornings surfing and walking the beach, wallowing in the doldrums. One ordinary morning, I had come out of the ocean with my board in hand. As I put down my board and picked up my towel, I noticed a woman sitting 20 yards away—alone—in a perfect little bubble of harmony. She just had a glowing peace upon her. As I started my walk home, she said out of

nowhere, “Have you ever read this book?” Holding it up, I read the cover: “Prayer of Jabez” by Dr Wilkinson. In short, the book’s premise is to unleash the power of prayer by asking God for something continuously for a month while repeating the prayer of Jabez. Priscilla—the woman on the beach— handed it to me, saying she was simply “paying it forward” after her miracle.
Eventually, my path led to a Bible-based seminary program. After that, I received a calling—my first assignment from God—to co-pastor a church in one of Cabo’s poorest colonies. I realize now that I wasn’t there to teach anyone but to learn from people who were truly dependent on God for everything. It was indeed the best internship for a young pastor. I learned and witnessed genuine humility and faith every day.
beautiful church. A beach church in Cabo feels so perfect.
I read the book front to back that day, and I began thinking about my old dream and what had propelled me to work like a raving maniac for the last decade: a desire to eventually move to a small surf town in Mexico. (I grew up listening to James Taylor, by the way!) Long story short, I found that beach paradise I had prayed for within two years—and 23 years later, I’m still here.
During Covid, as all the churches had been shut down by government ordinances, I felt led to go down to the beach and start a Sunday service that would provide ample social distancing. With the city’s blessing, we brought some umbrellas and a small speaker system, and presto: we had ourselves a fine little beach church.
I still pinch myself that this spiritual journey started early in Santa Monica when I began asking God to live in a beach paradise—and believing in the power of prayer.
My faith journey continued to grow— albeit with long hiatuses and plenty of misadventures, which I know now were all part of God’s plan to help me find a real relationship with him and stand tall above the weeds of religiosity.
We’re gathering at Las Viudas Beach on Sundays at 10 a.m. almost four years later. The old speakers that played recorded music were replaced by live music and many more umbrellas along the way. I couldn’t have dreamed of pastoring a more
Our congregation is a mixture of spiritual seekers and mature believers, young and old, but the common denominator is that everyone is so authentic and genuinely grateful. It’s like the ocean air comes in and washes away stuffy stereotypes, judgment, and condemnation every Sunday.
Thank you for allowing me to share my story with you. I hope you join us on a Sunday morning. I promise you it will be a unique and fun experience and perhaps a place for you to learn and grow in your faith.

a Mexic
With 16 million dogs roaming the neighborhoods, amounting to 70 percent fixing a dog for the reasonable donation of 28 dollars interrupts a reproduction
of all dogs surveyed, Mexico takes the top spot in Latin America for the most significant number of stray dogs. No exception is Los Cabos, where the municipal health directorate estimates an astonishing 500 thousand dogs and cats living in the streets. No, we’re not kidding. Half a million homeless pets are a problem that boils down to the well-known three I’s of domestic animal overpopulation: ignorance, irresponsibility, and inconsiderateness.
Allowing uncontrolled reproduction, which generates the abandonment and suffering of puppies and kittens, is the first cause of animal abuse, which, beyond being inhumane, represents a horrible cultural and moral trait that affects Los Cabos as a society and a world-class tourist destination. If you love Cabo and advocate for animal welfare, keep reading; there is something you can do. Better late than never, the government has recently created a committee to enforce the animal protection law. Sterilization clinics have been intensified, and schools have started to run educational programs on the good treatment of animals. It’s essential to mention that, for much longer, local animal rescue groups have been working to save as many doggies and kitties as possible, provide medical care, and find adoptive families for them. They’re both dedicated volunteers and legally established shelters and nonprofit no-profit institutions whose primary goal is to reduce overpopulation through low-cost and even free spay and neuter campaigns. All rescuers rely on donations from friends and relatives but are usually at capacity, short on funds, and in desperate need of support. Undoubtedly, a growing part of the local community is sensitive and solidary to the cause. A great example is PET Los Cabos, founded by Aida Trujillo and Evaristo Castro, who, with decades of experience in animal welfare, recognized the importance of addressing the root issue by educating their community about responsible pet ownership and the significance of spaying/neutering. This is only one of many examples of locals taking action. However, vacationers and snowbirds can do their bit to help a Mexican perrito or gatito, too! Here are the ABCs for animal lovers that Laurie Saunders and I have compiled together. Laurie, now a full-time Cabo resident for five years, has extensive experience helping local organizations. Her journey began when she first visited, coming down from New Hampshire on vacation. She has curated a list of “small acts of kindness” that can significantly change lives.
Attend fundraising events. Ask your concierge, grab local magazines (Destino, your number one!), or stay tuned on social media to learn about golf tournaments, fancy dinners, concerts, fashion shows, or any event with a cause. Not in the mood for a hectic evening? Donate to shelters or finance free spay and neuter campaigns. Even one single surgery counts tremendously. Consider this:
12
chain of exponential growth that starts with an average of 16 puppies in one year, jumps to 128 in two years, and 512 in three years. Cats’ figures are also impressive: the small number of 12 newborns in one year inflates to 376 in three years. To break this endless chain, private and public institutions run sterilization clinics every month. Imagine a crew of vets and volunteers working on Sundays from dawn to dusk, spurred by the only goal of preventing painful lives by fixing as many cats and dogs as they can afford. You have no idea how amazing these people are! They are true angels. Would you like to become one yourself? Perhaps be one with wings!
Be a flight angel. To further provide medical care to their rescued or surrendered
pets, these organizations try to find them foster homes and adoptive families, if not here, in the US or Canada. There are partnerships between shelters at the international level for rehoming rescue street animals and giving them a second chance. When your vacation is over, you might take one (or more) of these lucky pets on the plane with you. All the paperwork and costs are taken care of by the organization. The dog or cat is delivered to the airport, and someone will pick it up upon arrival at the destination. The traveler has nothing to pay for; just check in the furry friend with the rest of the family. “One year, I took 44 dogs to the States,” says Saunders, who also collects the crates used for transportation and flies them back with medical supplies, accessories, collars, leashes, etc. Transporting these goods is also a way to help the cause, as several visitors already do. How can you volunteer to be a flight angel? It’s as easy as pie. You can contact the institutions directly (see the bottom of the article) or through a Facebook group named Cabo Pet Escorts (link below), where shelters list their needs, and travelers willing to help can post their flight details and wait for a call.
Care for a doggie if you can. Are you snowbirds with property? Are you on vacation in a pet-friendly residence? Make a puppy happy. Consider fostering a dog for the time you are here. When you socialize with the animal, its behavior changes for the better. It regains trust in people and gets ready to live with a family. Even one or two weeks in a foster home can make a difference and facilitate adoption. If this kind of help is not feasible, consider donating money or supplies. You can always visit a shelter. You can take the dogs for a walk or cuddle with the kittens. Giving a little love to these domestic animals, even though you can’t provide a home for them, can make a significant difference. After all, these animals are without a place to call home. In word but not deed, they are homeless. Stand up for the pets that nobody pats. Every little bit counts. As Saunders says, “A little bit goes a long way.” SCAN THIS TO HELP

10 THINGS LORETO IS KNOWN FOR
SCAN HERE!
Loreto Mexico is one of the country’s best kept secrets. While it’s grown in popularity, the city still maintains its small-town charm, local culture, and tranquil beauty that make it the ideal escape to paradise, but if you’ve never heard of this destination, you may be wondering “What is Loreto Mexico known for?” The city is known for its rich traditions and heritage, and its natural beauty attracts travelers from all over the world. When you visit Loreto, be sure to experience these 11 things that make it a unique place to visit in Mexico.

Prehistoric Sites
Loreto Bay National Marine Park
In the mountains around Loreto Mexico, you can still find traces of prehistoric tribes who called the area home over 7,500 years ago. Hike out to La Pinguica to discover ancient cave paintings, which, thanks to being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are still visible today.

Kayaking
Paddleboarding
Loreto Mexico was named the second best place in the world for kayaking, and with smooth waters and natural beauty, it’s no surprise that kayaking is one of the most popular things to do in Loreto. It’ll give you a good cardio and muscular workout, and when you’re done, you can hop in the water to cool off. Head out with a snorkel, and you’ll be able to explore life under the sea along the way.
If you’re hoping to paddleboard on vacation, the smooth waters and protection of the Loreto Bay National Water make this the ideal destination, and it has been internationally recognized as one of the best places to paddleboard. Whether you’re new to the sport or have been paddling for years, you’ll find it invigorating and relaxing to paddleboard surrounded by the tranquil beauty of the Sea of Cortez.

Gorgeous Beach
Scuba Diving and Snorkeling
Mission Loreto
Among the Islands of Loreto and in the nationally protected marine zone, you’ll find some of the best sites for scuba diving and snorkeling. The Sea of Cortez was nicknamed “The Aquarium of the World” by the legendary explorer Jacques Cousteau because it’s home to more than 80% of the aquatic species that live in the Pacific Ocean.
5
Every winter, humpback, orca, grey, and blue whales travel 6,000 miles from arctic waters to the warm coast of Mexico to mate and give birth, and the peaceful waters of the Sea of Cortez and the security of the Loreto Bay National Marine Park make this a safe haven for them. If you want to go whale watching in Loreto Mexico, be sure to visit between December and March.
6 Like most other tropical destinations in Mexico, Loreto is known for beautiful sandy beaches, but what makes the city stand apart from others is the secluded tranquility of the coast. Here, you won’t have to compete with other tourists for a spot on the beach or a view of the ocean. With spacious shorelines, Loreto is truly paradise.
16
When you start to research what is Loreto Mexico known for, the nearly 800 square miles of Loreto Bay National Marine Park will quickly pop up. In the 1990s, the community worked to make the waters around the city a federally protected zone, preserving the environment as tourism started to grow. With limited fishing and restrictions on development, Loreto Mexico will continue to be a naturally stunning destination for years to come.
3
In 1697, Mission Loreto was established by Jesuit missionary Juan María de Salvatierra, and it was the first permanent Spanish settlement in the Californias. While Mexico has long been independent from Spain, the church remains in the heart of Loreto, and when you stop by here, you’ll be able to admire the traditional architecture and learn more about Loreto’s history in the museum.
Sport Fishing
Thanks to sustainable regulations, Loreto continues to be renowned for its sport fishing, and every day, you’ll see fishermen hauling in golden mahi mahi and mojarra. Depending on the season, you’ll be able to catch roosterfish, marlin, and sailfin, and after sailing back into the marina, have your catch grilled up for a delicious and satisfying dinner.
TPC Danzante Bay
In the sports world, if you ask “What is Loreto Mexico known for?”, you’ll get one answer: TPC Danzante Bay Golf course. Designed by Rees Jones, TPC Danzante Bay was named the Best Golf Course in Mexico and Latin America by the World Golf Awards. It’s both technically challenging and scenically rewarding, and with the warm Mexico weather, every day is perfect for golfing.

8 Fantastic Traditions That Define Guadalupe-Reyes as the
Mexican Holiday Extravaganza
Guadalupe-Reyes is a Mexican holiday season that stretches from December 12th, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, to January 6th, Three Kings' Day, and it's nothing short of an extravaganza. This festive period is a vibrant blend of Catholic traditions, indigenous customs, and pure holiday cheer. Let's dive into the heart of Guadalupe-Reyes and explore its defining elements:
Our Lady of Guadalupe: It all kicks off on December 12th with the celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico. Festive processions, masses and parades fill the streets as Mexicans honor this significant religious figure.
Nochebuena: On Christmas Eve, or "Nochebuena," families gather for a grand feast, featuring traditional delicacies like tamales, bacalao (salted codfish), and ponche, a hot fruit punch. Following this culinary delight is the "Misa de Gallo," or Midnight Mass.
Midnight Mass: Attending Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve is a cherished tradition, with its spiritually uplifting atmosphere. Postmass, you'll often find fireworks and joyous music, turning the night into a full-blown celebration.
Nativity Scenes: Exquisite nativity scenes, known as "nacimientos," take center stage as decorations. They intricately depict the Holy Family, angels, shepherds, and the Three Wise Men. These scenes adorn homes, churches, and public spaces, adding a touch of magicto the season.
18
Piñatas: Piñatas aren't exclusive to Las Posadas. They make regular appearances at Christmas parties throughout Guadalupe-Reyes, symbolizing the breaking of sin. These colorful, papier-mâché creations are typically filled with candies, fruits, and small toys.
Día
de los Santos Inocentes: On December 28th, a playful twist unfolds, similar to April Fool's Day, as people engage in light-hearted pranks on "Día de los Santos Inocentes," the Day of the Innocent Saints.
Tamales: Guadalupe-Reyes is not complete without indulging in tamales, a beloved Mexican dish made from masa (corn dough) filled with an array of ingredients. Tamales are a must-have during this festive season.
Día de los Reyes: The grand finale of Guadalupe-Reyes is celebrated on January 6th, known as Día de los Reyes or Three Kings' Day. Families come together for a sumptuous feast, and children excitedly welcome the arrival of the "Three Wise Men" who bring them gifts, marking the end of the holiday season.

The Pura Experience
More Than Just a Salon
In 2016, Carmen de la Cruz and Jessica Carrillo brought their vision of holistic beauty to life when they opened their dream salon. Their approach to hair goes beyond mere cutting; it's about crafting individual masterpieces. The Pura experience begins with a deep understanding of their clients' unique hair requirements. Whether it's a classic cut, a bold color transformation, or a revitalizing hair treatment, the skilled professionals at Pura take the time to personalize every service to suit each individual.
At Pura, they uphold a profound belief that a visit to the hair salon should transcend being a mere beauty treatment; it should be an enriching experience that leaves clients feeling revitalized, motivated, and empowered. Their services go beyond the realm of traditional hair care; they offer a transformative journey to help individuals rediscover and embrace their authentic selves.
Pura offers image consultation services that extend beyond just hair. Their image consultants work closely with clients to identify the style and appearance that best suits their personality and lifestyle, ensuring that their hair complements their overall look. They pride themselves for staying at the forefront of the beauty industry, continually introducing new services, ranging from luxurious lash treatments to skillfully crafted lash extensions, as well as professional manicure and pedicure options, among others. Carmen and Jessie’s commitment to innovation doesn't stop at services alone. The team at Pura remains dedicated to honing their skills and expertise through ongoing training. This ensures that they can consistently bring the latest techniques and trends in the beauty world to Los Cabos, offering clients a refreshing and cutting-edge experience every time they visit the salon.
Sustainability Meets Beauty
Tucked away in a special corner of Cabo San Lucas, you will discover Pura - an artisanal hair salon that redefines the art of hairstyling. While there are many salons that focus solely on aesthetics, at Pura, they believe in a holistic approach that combines looking good, feeling good, and caring for the environment. Their dedication to personalized, high-end hair services and sustainable beauty sets them apart. The moment you step into the salon, you'll feel your shoulders relax, and you'll take a deep breath, entering an oasis of beauty.

Pura's dedication to preserving the planet for future generations is unmistakable, and their commitment to sustainability permeates every aspect of the salon. They have embraced a holistic approach to environmental responsibility, starting with their choice of eco-friendly products. Pura exclusively utilizes high-quality, ecoconscious products and brands that prioritize sustainable beauty. This not only enhances the beauty of their clients but also contributes to the collective responsibility of protecting the environment. Their commitment to sustainability extends to their zero-waste efforts. They are committed to minimizing waste by using products responsibly and implementing efficient recycling procedures. This guarantees that the salon maintains the same unspoiled beauty as the natural wonders of Cabo San Lucas, reflecting their mission to blend top-notch services with eco-conscious practices.
Their philosophy is the establishment of trusted relationships with their clients. Pura aspires to cultivate enduring connections, ensuring that every client who walks into the salon feels like they are at home, cared for by dedicated experts who genuinely prioritize their well-being. This commitment fosters an environment permeated by positive energy, warmth, and comfort, allowing clients to unwind, relax, and encounter a rejuvenated sense of self during their visit. Beyond the pursuit of beauty, Pura stands as an advocate for embracing uniqueness, transcendence, and authenticity. Their mission goes beyond conforming to conventional standards; it's about celebrating the individuality of each client. Pura strives to make clients feel distinct, not by fitting them into predefined molds, but by honoring and magnifying their unique essence, ensuring that every visit transcends the ordinary and leaves a lasting impact. When clients step into Pura, they're not just stepping into a salon; they're entering a sanctuary where beauty, wellness, and sustainability harmonize to create an extraordinary experience. Discover the transformation that goes beyond hair – a transformation that celebrates the essence of who you are.
