LOS CABOS & SOUTH BAJA

By Michelle Monroy

This corner of the world will create a lifetime of memories. Los Cabos (the capes) is in the southern most tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of

Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo and the East Cape. In between, along

three main areas:

the coast as well as inland, you will find smaller towns and points of interest such as Santiago and Miraflores.

The Baja Sur Loop If you look at the Baja Sur map you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. There are ongoing road improvements and new highway constructions, so getting from one place to another will only get easier. The new highway from Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos is impressively well done, making it only 45 minutes away.

The Corridor

A 40 Km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 25 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready to snap some photos of the beautiful beaches and make a roadside stop at the Cabo Real arroyo for a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

San José del Cabo

Walking around San José will be more of a traditional Mexican town experience than Cabo San Lucas. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district. From November through June the popular “Art Walk” takes place every Thursday evening where the galleries welcome guests to view their exhibits, sip wine and dine at one of the five star restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride and explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the Pacific’s breezes.

La Paz

Cabo San Lucas

Also just known as “Cabo”, is a tourist friendly town located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula that’s full of entertainment for every age and liking. You will find the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meeting at land’s end and the beautiful rock formations that create the famous Cabo arch. Cabo San Lucas has the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. 60 miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers and folks who just want to get away from it all.

A BIT OF HISTORY Mother Nature’s own fish trap - Eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of fish varieties and mammals found their way into this “trap” and either stayed in its warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool bottom of the two mile deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. Fast forwarding to the 1730s, it is said that Nicholas Tamaral, a Spanish Padre, was sent to where San José del Cabo now stands to found a Catholic Mission. Baja didn’t welcome him as well as it did the marine species; the mission was burned by the Pericú Indians, the native inhabitants of this area. San José went on to become a commercial trade centre in the 1800s and many of the buildings you now see as stores, galleries and restaurants were built during these years. In the early 1900s, stories say that a group of fishermen made their way down and built their palapas on Medano Beach beside a fresh water lagoon near the present Club Cascadas. Not long after, word around the World spread and fishing villages and hunting lodges were built to accommodate Baja’s explorers.

activities SCUBA DIVING & SNORKELLING

This is your chance to experience the underwater life in the Sea of Cortez, also known as the “Aquarium of the World”. Prepare yourself for nature to show off as you swim side by side with colourful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, turtles and more. There are a few ways to snorkel in Cabo: book one of the popular snorkel tours, drive to a beach and swim off the shore or charter your own private boat. Tours last around two or three hours and cost around $40.00 dollars per person. If you’re venturing out on your own, stay away from the Pacific side; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports.

SNORKELLING SPOTS Pelican Rock This rock attracts many fish and is just an easy five minute boat ride from the Cabo San Lucas Marina. Lover’s Beach Accessible only by water taxi. Be aware that this is a high boat traffic area and it’s not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Cove Santa Maria is a regular destination for snorkel tours. If you choose to drive there, it’s a very easy swim from the shore to the reef. Chileno Bay This bay is also a common destination for snorkelling tours and has a safe roped off area for snorkellers. Cabo Pulmo Cabo Pulmo is a Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape that offers possibly the best snorkelling in the area. To get to this eight fingered coral reef you have take about a 2 hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it’s well worth it.

Santa María Cave Beginners - 20’-40’ - 35 minutes by boat, or dive from the beach. The entrance to Santa Maria canyon has a huge variety of fish who feed right from your hand. Chileno Beginners - 30’-70’ - 35 minute boat ride and a sandy and rocky bottom. PARKING Lots of turtles sited here, tropical fish, night dives. El Gavilán Intermediate/Advanced - 70’-100’ - 35 minutes boat time. Rocky ledge leading into a canyon where groupers and larger fish are often sited. Blow Hole Beginners/Advanced - 30’-70’ - 35 minutes boat ride from San Lucas, or just 10 minutes from Chileno beach. Rocky valleys present a variety of fish. Las Salinas Beginners - 30’-45’ - 1.4 hours by boat from San Lucas, or 1 hour by boat from La Playita. A sunken Japanese fishing boat attracts a large assortment of fish. Gordo Banks Advanced - 110’-120’ - 1 hour boat from La Playita, there is a seamount where you can see marlin, hammerheads, skip jacks and at times huge manta rays. Cabo Pulmo Beginner/Advanced - 30’-100’ - 1 hour drive East of San José on the paved road. 5 minutes by boat you’ll find the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez.

SCUBA DIVING DESTINATIONS Note: travel time is from Cabo San Lucas marina Land’s End Intermediate-Advanced 50’-60’ and just 5 minutes by boat you’re swimming with sea lions and moray eels. Also a sunken boat can be seen in the Falls. Sand Falls Beginners - Advanced 30’-100’ Steep sand banks go down sharply into a canyon filled with tropical fish. A short boat ride from shore, the canyon runs from the depths of the Cabo San Lucas bay to within 30 feet off shore. BOATING & FISHING

Puerto Los Cabos Marina

Calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather... some would argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, the options to fit your needs are endless.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate you depending on what you need. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour around the arch, fishing for a couple of hours and a cruise to any of the beautiful bays for swimming. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the main difference between renting a yacht and a fishing boat is the cost.

Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers and pangas are more commonly used. Pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option, but cruisers will fit more people and be more comfortable if the sea is rough. When booking with a fishing boat operator, make sure they include proper safety equipment such as; life jackets, GPS, VHF radio and shark repellent!

FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - takes place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers an abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate. No matter what your level of fishing experience is, Cabo won’t disappoint you.

6

What to Expect It’s recommended to make a reservation at least one day before. Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or can be added at an additional cost. The earlier you leave the better; trips usually begin around 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. 15% to 20% of your charter cost is a customary tip for the crew.

Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait you can buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire can also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

TRAVEL

Most people come to Los Cabos for a beach vacation and this area happens to have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. From floating in a turquoise bay with pink sand to riding some epic waves, each one offers something unique. Here is a list of the mustsee beaches to help you decide which one is your dream beach.

By Michelle Monroy

Medano Beach This is where the action is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2 mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and family friendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. All water sports and activities are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the spot to do it. Its stunning view of land’s end and the vast entertainment options makes it a must-see. In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. You can walk through the east side of the marina or access it via Avenida del Pescador street. Get prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, the only thing you can do is say “No Gracias.” • Prices don’t vary too much from one water sports rental place to another; just talk to someone and break out those negotiation skills. • Make a trip to Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

Location: Tips:

Lover’s Beach Getting to here is an adventure in itself due to the fact that it’s only reachable by boat or kayak. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Prices are around $15.00 per person. Ask your captain to cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves that you will instantly want to go explore. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll now find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so only swim on Lover’s Beach. Land’s End beside the famous arch. Only accessible by boat. There are a couple of vendors that offer beers and water but you won’t find any other services. • A good idea is to spend the day at Medano Beach and take an hour or two to go to Lover’s Beach; this should be enough time to explore and enjoy this natural wonderland.

Location: Tips:

Las Viudas Las Viudas (The Widows) beach is not visible from the road and is possibly the most private beach you will find on this list. What makes it unique are the rock formations that create small pools and coves where you can have a private and peaceful beach day. This beach is swimmable with caution, but if you find your own pool you can avoid the waves. Turn right at Km. 12.5 of the corridor and follow the dirt road down to the beach. There is a sign that reads “Las Viudas” but keep your eyes peeled because the entrance sneaks up on you. You won’t find any services or vendors so bring all your beach essentials with you.

Location:

stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family friendly beach is relatively secluded, therefore you rarely run into beach vendors. Follow the sign that reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. No services and hardly any shade. You can rent umbrellas on the beach, but if you happen to have one bring it anyway. • Bring snorkelling gear!

Location: Tips:

Chileno A very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newly installed palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs for excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. This is the only beach with public rest rooms and it has plenty of palapas for shade. Follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. If you visit Chileno on a weekend make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and if you beat the crowds you’ll be guaranteed a palapa for that much needed shade. • Bring Snorkelling gear!

Location: Tips:

Palmilla Palmilla is known for its family friendly calm waters and mile long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis.

La Playita La Playita (the little beach) is a long stretch of beach where you will often find locals fishing from the shore and families with children enjoying the beach-front playground. On the right end of La Playita you will find a roped-off swimming area just outside the beautiful Puerto Los Cabos 500 slip marina entrance. To the left is the natural open beach where you can swim, skim-board and enjoy a peaceful beach day away from the crowds. Follow the signs to La Playita/Puerto Los Cabos form Boulevard Mijares in downtown San José del Cabo (across from the fire department). You will find new and well maintained bathrooms, palapas and fishing charters. • There are no food services directly on the beach, but there are several casual restaurants in the surrounding area.

Location: Tips:

Cerrit os Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day on the beach or if you want to be active you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop. Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas - Todos Santos highway. Watch the markers as there is no sign. Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area. Lounge chairs, restrooms, food and drinks are available at The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant.

MUSIC JUNE’S MUSICAL EVENTS IN LOS CABOS By Marilyn Graham Los Cabos had many exciting musical choices in June! On the 21st, the F iesta de L a Music a L os Ca bos took place in San José del Cabo, in which many new musicians, and some well established ones, performed. The music was enjoyed by many and hopefully this brief success will take the festival to the next level and attract the best musicians in town. On June 22nd a beach party took place at Costa Azul as part of the 2 013 L os Cabos Open of Surf. The musical line-up consisted of S teel P ul se , Red Not Chili P eppers , Ro otsterford Band , L os Músicos de J osé , Tim L ang and the P ost Surf Crew and more. The same weekend was the musical performance of CATS in the Pabellon Cultural de Cabo San Lucas as well as El Rey L eon ( The L ion K ing) the preceding weekend. A Full Moon Dinner Concert under the Super Moon took place with the Howie Clif ton Ja zz Quartet at 7 Seas Restaurant. The month ended beautifully with the 5th A nnual Concert of the L os C a bos Youth Orchestr a at the San José del Cabo zócalo on the 28th and in the outdoor theatre of Cabo San Lucas’ Pabellon Cultural. They began both nights with the children’s orchestra, 20 young students who are part of the sobresalientes or musically gifted students program of Los Cabos. They performed two delightful pieces, ending with Old McDonald. This was followed by the Youth Orchestra’s performance of Carmen Suite No. 1 by Georges Bizet; Danzón No. 2 by Mexican composer Arturo Márquez (my personal evening favorite); Huapango de Moncayo, by another Mexican composer, Jose Pablo Moncayo; an Andrew Lloyd Weber medley; and ending with some Leroy Anderson favorites.

Contact us for your music events or to add your live music schedule to our list: contactdestino@gmail.com or call 142-4949/ 105-9700

The Los Cabos Youth Orchestra is part of a musical program developed by Professor Alfredo Franco, a professional violinist with two degrees in conducting from Conaculta in Guadalajara. The goal of the patronage is to bring free music a l educ ation to children in L os Ca bos , a s well a s to provide an open space for families to en joy free concerts and cl a ssic a l music . They also provide musical instruments to those kids that are interested in learning but don’t have the means to buy one of their own. Currently there are almost 80 students involved, 20 of them in the gifted program. We thank Professor Alfredo Franco, the patronage and all the dedicated students for the lovely performances! SCUBA DIVING by yeye

Self Contained Underwater Breathing, SCUBA diving requires you use an apparatus to breathe underwater. Yes, scuba divers carry their own source of breathing gas (SCUBA Tank), hence the f r e e d o m t o b r e a t h e is ruled by the same natural laws than life in land is; deep calm breaths will empty your mind of thoughts, the less thinking the more present you are, and being present relaxes you and slows you down enough to appreciate fully this wonderful Universe.

“B a j a C al i f o r ni a S u r has become a very important international SCUBA Diving destination with divers from, not only USA or Canada, but also Asia, Middle East, Western and Eastern Europe and all Latin America and of course Mexico.” - says Ricardo Tamaño, General Manager of Cabo Pulmo Beach Resort who organises tours with transportation, lunch and in water activities, running from C a b o S a n

“Holding your breath is something you never ever want to do.” -- Navy SEAL’s diving instructor, Lieutenant Mike White.

Diving is a pretty safe activity with very low accidents rate, fact that relates more to the practice than anything else; when Diver Steve Summers was asked “Aren’t you afraid of sharks?” He said “With all these re-breathers on board there will be lots of space in the trip back!” This shows that character is of a s i m p l e n a t u r e for experienced divers - they love life and enjoy the silence made of underwater sounds, and they share the wisdom that comes from knowing that civilization ends at the waterline, here all enter the food chain and not always at the top. Scuba diving makes the humble, gives perspective and is pure adventure and fun. SCUBA Diving has become o n e o f t h e m o s t p o p ul a r a c t i v i t i e s i n t h e w a t e r in the last 30 years, with

more millions of certified SCUBA Divers around the world. Certification agencies as PADI, SSI, NAUI, CMAS, all part of the World Recreational Scuba Training Council (WRSTC) are recognized and accepted in most of the SCUBA Diving destinations such as Los Cabos, and the

Council is dedicated to the worldwide safety of the recreational diving public.

L o s C a b o s coast offers great spots for scuba diving and snorkel. Two of the most popular dives include Cabo Pulmo and Sand Falls. The u n d e r s e a S a n d Fall s were discovered by Jacques Cousteau off the tip of Land’s End in Cabo San Lucas, a cascading fall of sand dropping 1,200 feet. A 90 foot deep water dive glimpse of some of the tropical sand larger fish. The National Marine Reserve of C a b o Pul m o in the East Cape shallow water dives display colourful fish on a live coral reef, one of the most incredible Marine Protected Areas around the world, considered one of the top 10 sites to dive.

T I P S: Equalizing: If you’re already in the water and find you can’t equalize, go up a couple of feet at a time (slowly!) pinching your nose and trying to blow air out through your nostrils -GENTLY- as you continuously exhale. Keep ascending slowly while trying to clear. If you can’t do it, or feel pressure and pain in your ears, abort the dive. Never try and tough it out--you will destroy your eardrums, literally. Use a scuba gear bag: BCD, skins, wet-suit, mask/fins/snorkel, spare parts, regulator, camera, keep your equipment stowed away under the seat--NEVER clutter the deck. That is a dead giveaway for a rookie. Assemble and check all of your gear on the way to the site, NOT once you arrive. The idea is to be ready to jump in well before the boat is over the site. Keep your mouth shut and ears opened during the site brief. Conditions change from minute to minute, including current direction and speed, water temperature, and what you might see there. Scuba diving, as well as mostly everything, is better experienced having a good sense of your surroundings at all times, including other people. A w a r e n e s s , organization and a little common sense will get you far, but to succeed the main thing to remember is still most ancient advice: St ay c al m.*

Cabo Pulmo by yeye

Tranquil and remote. In 2005, Unesco declared 244 islands and coastal areas in the Sea of Cortez, a World Heritage Site. Cabo Pulmo is on the southeastern tip of the Baja Peninsula where the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet.

THE L ARGEST CORAL REEF IN THE GULF OF CALIFORNIA

Cabo Pulmo is one of the only three living coral reefs in North America and it is the only coral reef in the eastern Pacific, from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. Its natural resources are divinity in all directions. Mexican, blue, green and peaceful, this village sustains itself and inspires all who settle here to honour life with a simple lifestyle. The town has around 250 residents, all living off the grid. Solar power and generators provide electricity. Water comes from a well or is trucked in. The local grocery store, a couple of dive shops and a few palapa style restaurants regularly open and are the commercial spots in the area. Travellers come here to dive into the clear transparent water characteristic of a healthy reef, to see manta rays or the occasional whale shark, brightly coloured fish, turtles, moray eels, pelagic game fish like tuna and marlin. Estimated to be twenty five thousand years old, Cabo Pulmo reef is formed by four coral barriers in parallel direction and it is around 4 kilometres long. It offers 60 to 70 feet of visibility all the time, and it is common to see the bottom from the surface.

listen or play music, sunset. Living rhythms to the sound of Nature. The surrounding bay shelters the reef and keeps the water temperatures consistently between 70 and 85 degrees until the end of October, balancing the environment for coral growth. In Cabo Pulmo you’ll meet friendly people, eat good food, drink cold beer, and witness one of the world’s most beautiful natural aquariums just offshore; life at Cabo Pulmo National Marine park is protected from hunting, still those who love fishing are allowed to catch big fish like cabrilla, dorado and grouper just outside its boundaries.

In 1995 the Mexican government made Cabo Pulmo a national marine park, banning fishing. Between 1999 and 2009, the fish population grew by 463 percent, the biggest such increase ever measured in any marine reserve in the world.

This secret paradise is accessible only via a dirt road that runs along the southeastern shore of the peninsula. You can drive from Cabo San Lucas (2 hours) or from San José del Cabo (1:30 hs) with any type of car. Take Mexico 1 toward the East Cape, you’ll come into pueblo Miraflores, followed by Santiago and its nearby hot springs. Keep going on into La Ribera and the junction with the road to Cabo Pulmo. The last 16 miles are unpaved roads.

Eco-tourism and sustainable development keep Cabo Pulmo a place of simplicities. Sunrise, walk by the beach, kayak, snorkel, dive, hike, swim, mountain bike, meditate, drink a beer, friendly converse,

Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park is a 27.5-square-mile ecosystem with at least 226 fish species. Scuba diving here is the romance of those who look for underwater adventure.

20

Known for its sea lion colony and schools of tropical fish, it is the green turtle one important endangered species that find refuge in Cabo Pulmo. Local restaurants offer tasty traditional Mexican food, great fish, shrimp tacos and cold beer. El Caballero and Tito’s seem to be favourites, but remember you are in México; most likely food will be delicious everywhere. On the edge of the reef, this village on the Tropic of Cancer lies just 60 miles from Los Cabos. Cabo Pulmo bay is an fantastic place for snorkellers and beginning divers with much of the reef accessible from shore. The more advanced and experienced divers, with most dives between 30-70 feet, get to swim in an extraordinary dimension here on Earth. Underwater love. Pulmo in Esperanto and Latin means Lung, and Cabo means Cape, besides literally translating as Lung Cape, for those travelling troubadours in a journey towards the Self Cabo Pulmo with no doubt invites them to breathe free and sing Argentinian Alejandro Lerner’s classic...y todo a pulmón... todo a pulmón.*

Mexican Amber Art: A Natural time capsule by yeye

The enchanting beauty of the land and the properties that keep it healthy are inspiration to humans. As travellers through the Universe, our green planet Earth is home to many stories we have told each other to preserve its wisdom and help future generations recognize the cycles of growth and decline, with the hope that evolution naturally enlightens our consciousness until ultimate truth finds us.

with insect inclusions to the University of California. Blom owned a large house in San Cristobal de las Casas (Chiapas) that functioned as a cultural and artistic centre with rooms for visitors. From here, scientists set off for Simojovel in a jeep with Blom as leader of the expedition. In this expedition stratigraphic mapping was undertaken and Amber with inclusions was obtained (also a new species of stingless bee was discovered.)

Mexican Amber is one of those beautiful qualities

Resin first hardens into a substance called copal and chunks of copal get buried in soil and sediments. Over

of nature that have existed through out time with an specific function, to protect from disease and the attacks from wood insects. Amber is fossilized resin with antiseptic properties that once exuded from the bark of an ancient long extinct tree. As it exuded as stalactites dripping down the trunk of the tree, the resin entombed flora and fauna, hence this amber with inclusions is a natural capsule capturing a moment in time from millions of years ago.

Story story, the Spanish conquistadores tell of Motēcuhzōma Xōcoyōtzin, huey tlatoani to the Mexicas between 1502 - 1520 (an Aztec Emperor), stirring his chocolate with an amber spoon. The immediate thought when we hear Emperor is “Oh, he did it for luxury”, but the wisdom in natural ancient medicinal knowledge suggests to the deeper observer that, if amber has antiseptic qualities to it and the object made of it was a spoon, he probably did it to protect himself from bacteria when he ate. What do you think? In the 1950’s PD Hurd Jr and a group of scientists gathered the most significant collection of Mexican amber, now at the University of California Museum of Berkeley, but Mexican amber became known to the modern world through Frans Blom, an archaeologist and authority on Mayan culture. When Blom, an ex oil surveyor became aware of amber deposits in the Simojovel area of Chiapas, he sent samples

millions of years copal hardens into amber. Any insects or other inclusions that were stuck in the resin are perfectly preserved. Interesting is to notice that copal is still used by a number of indigenous peoples of Mexico and Central America as an incense during sweat lodge ceremonies. Modern shamans use it as ceremonial burn. The mysticism that we give to all which we do not understand may sometimes confuse medicine with magic and many consider its healing properties are of divine nature. Only when we think of how simply divine life in itself is, we can think of it as magical in the most romantic of forms, true is that this resin has natural antiseptic qualities.

YOGA B E A C H

The quality of light in Baja Sur “People follow the brightest path.” Distance in space is measured in light speed, anything travelling faster speaks of electromagnetic principles and subatomic particles; as we understand it we are now here, now there, and everywhere at the same time. We are a solar system. Light is our number one nutrient and has been called the medicine of the future. Through your senses, your body reacts to everything around you, and you either get nourished or drained by the energy that surrounds you. We think of energy as the strength and vitality required for sustained physical, mental or spiritual activity. Light, both natural and artificial lighting - greatly influences the qualit y of your energy. Sunshine, as a source of Vitamin D, has regulatory roles in calcium metabolism (which is vital for normal functioning of the nervous system, as well as for bone growth and maintenance of bone density), immunity, cell proliferation, insulin secretion, and blood pressure. An excessive seclusion from the sun can lead to deficiency, you can obtain adequate amounts through diet, but hey, you are in Los Cabos, sunshine is what we are all about! Dr. John Ott, a pioneer light researcher, used the term “mal illumination” to describe sunlight deficiency and the harmful effects of fluorescent lighting on human’s behaviour, learning abilities and overall health. Excessive levels of artificial light produce annoyance and can adversely affect health, and too little light is associated with depression. These detrimental effects may depend on the spectrum as well as the overall brightness level of light. Ott’s experiments led him to believe that only a full spectrum of natural light (including natural amounts of infra-red and ultra-violet) could promote full health in plants, animals and humans.

Yoga by the beach is one of fun activities Los Cabos has to offer. Weather you choose a private instructor or choose to practice by your own, a true yogi understands the ultimate natural law of change. Change can be a challenging state of mind specially when we travel. People, food, places are unfamiliar and for some of us that might be enough to unsettle our own energy. The best advice in such situations is to be still for as long as you can handle, and to focus on your breath, observing how it flows, as it is, not as you want it. Observing your breath will help you understand how you are feeling as life changes around you. Observe it right now, you will notice if it is fast and short you probably are thinking too much and your muscles are stressed. As soon as you breathe

Full-spectrum light is light that covers the electromagnetic spectrum from infrared to near-ultraviolet, or all wavelengths that are useful to plant or animal life; in particular, sunlight is considered full spectrum, even though the solar spectral distribution reaching Earth changes with time of day, latitude, and atmospheric conditions. Baja Sur is privileged when it comes to solar spectral distribution. Sunshine is one main reason International travellers choose our paradise to rejuvenate. Los Cabos for example, offers around 300 days of sunlight in one year, we are located only miles south from the Tropic of Cancer, at the summer solstice the sun shines directly above us at its zenith, summer days aren’t more summer anywhere else. Travellers, film makers, photographers, health advocates, the young and the old, all love Baja Sur because of the quality of light. True Dumbledore, “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” Be happy, be you, be light.

ORGANIC Gardening >

Many of our travellers fall in love with our region and decide that having a home here is their best option, something so easy to do in Los Cabos. Do not be surprised if you end up buying a Ranch or farm instead, it happens a lot. Here, the land itself calls for its nurturing and the interest to grow a garden sparks in the heart of the settlers. Everywhere home is, growing your own garden can be the perfect solution against the high cost of organic produce, also to decrease the amount of pesticides you and your family consume, and to help protect the environment from overloading with toxic chemicals, are healthier choices. According to the experts organic gardening isn’t just about what you don’t do, it’s about trying to foster a more holistic, natural ecosystem. Here are 9 tips from gardener and New York Times published author Leslie Land: 1. Prepare the Soil. Nutrients are as important for the land as they are for all beings. 2. Use Good Compost. A properly maintained compost pile shouldn’t smell. But if it does add more dry carbon material (leaves, straw, or sawdust) and turn it more frequently.

22

3. Choose the Right Plants. Choose plants that will be well adjusted to each spot, in terms of light, moisture, drainage and soil quality. 4. Plant Crops in Wide Beds. Grouping reduces weeding and water waste, and helps you target compost and nutrients. 5. Proper Watering. The best time to water plants is usually in the morning. If you water in the evening plants stay damp over night, making them more likely to be damaged by fungal and bacterial diseases. 6. Weeding. It gets you outside in the fresh air and your garden needs it. 7. Protect Plants Without Toxic Pesticides. If your plants are being assaulted by pests, it may be a sign of other problems, make sure they are getting enough light, nutrients and moisture. 8. Harvesting. In general, it’s best to cut produce off with a sharp knife or scissors, versus ripping with your fingers, which can cause more damage to plant tissue. 9. Clean up. Most healthy or expired plants can actually be left in place over winter. You’ll provide some food and habitat for birds and other wildlife, and plant cover can help protect your soil from eroding.

deeply and freely, your shoulders will relax and your mind will empty from worries. What happens is that by observing your breath you are forced to be present, there is no thing more present than the breath. You will see clearly that whatever you are stressing about is either a thing of the past, or an anticipation of the future, which steals you from the experience you are having at this very moment. Life, after all, is made of moments, one by one. For some of us to focus our attention is not an easy task and that is when yoga poses come handy. Regardless of the pose you practice the teaching is happiness. Whatever you do, make sure you are breathing free. Every time you notice you are distracted or in pain, make sure you come back to being breathing free. If you are unhappy and can’t breathe freely, change what you are doing... go to the beach.

SPA Music and Tone for healing The proper ties of sound have been explored for ages. Sacred text refers to sound as the creative power of the Universe. Ancient cultures used it to move matter and it is no secret that modern conflicted countries use it as a weapon to alter mind and energy.

Farmer’s Markets *Fruits, vegetables, organic produce, food, local arts&crafts and music* THE SHOPS AT PALMILLA: Fridays 9am to 1pm LOS CABOS ORGANIC MARKET: Wednesday & Saturdays 8am to 12pm

It is recorded that Gregorian chants and solfeggio frequencies were used to tune the vibration of the listener to specific vibrations to promote harmony. Buddhist Monks study sound as a sacred practice and use bowls to work with energy. In China, the Emperor used to choose a frequency for his Empire period and instruments will tune to that of ficial frequency; the intention was to tune their people to the principles of that frequency. The believe that power ful knowledge is stored in these teachings has inspired musicians around the world to study sound, vibration and its specific ef fects in the human mind, body and spirit; and scientist use it as medicinal therapy. Music is surely the most common sound. We all play a favourite song that makes us feel better, or energizes our morning. Music makes the people get together and cer tainly people will gather with people that listen to the same style of music, they will dress the same, use same hairstyles, an imitate the ways of dancing. Music Therapy is a welcomed medicine in hospitals. Eras and centuries, cultures and countries are identified by the music people hear. What you listen to will directly af fect your mood, your health and your stillness. Tone is comprised of a frequency required to balance your energy and keep your body, mind and spirit in per fect harmony. In the present, 528hz tuning is used to repair DNA. A good Spa will make sure you feel relaxed, and will choose tones and music that promote healing. Silence?... It is golden.

USEFUL TIPS Driving Renting a car will let you enjoy the freedom of exploring the Los Cabos area without having to depend on taxis. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating to some, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there actually is some organization within the chaos. Here are some tips if you’re behind the wheel: Road Signage - Most signs are self explanatory, but here are a few that might need interpretation: ARROYO

Parking

Gas stations - There are two types of gasoline: Magna or verde (green) which is regular and Premium or roja (red). Lleno means full. Tipping the attendant around $10.00 pesos (less than a dollar) is customary.

Money and Currency

Exchange rates - Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will most likely get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate of $12.00 pesos to $1.00 dollar. Cash or Card? - Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted but you often run into cash only places, especially at restaurants, so always carry cash or ask before.

ATMs - There are many ATMs all over Cabo. Some only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option of pesos or dollars in one. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing. Try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying more commissions. Commissions on the street ATMs are higher than going to a bank’s ATM.

OWNING REAL ESTATE IN LOS CABOS by Blake Harrington

of residents in Cabo have migrated from the United States and Canada making this place their home. Owning Real Estate is entirely possible and many foreign investors/ buyers have come to the market to pick up on great deals in stable, safe Baja Sur. The basics for foreign investment revolves around the method of purchase available for foreigners, a bank trust called the “Fideicomiso”. The Mexican government realized they needed to make foreign investment available in Mexico and passed the Foreign Investment Act of 1993. Since the Mexican Constitution prohibits foreigners from owning property within 60 miles of the U.S. border, or within 30 miles off the coastline (as Los Cabos is), a secure form of holding title was needed and created with the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994. The “Fideicomiso” is a trust, just like an estate trust in the U.S., which gives the Purchaser all rights of ownership and is the legal equivalent of Deeded Property, as we refer to it in the States. In order to obtain rights of ownership, the Department of Foreign Affairs in Mexico City issues a permit to the Mexican bank of the buyer’s choice, which allows the bank to act as “Purchaser” of the property. Simply put, the bank acts as the “Trustee” for the trust and the Purchaser is the “Beneficiary” of the trust. The trust is not an asset of the bank - the banks only act as the Trustee to hold the trust.

Just like living wills and estate trusts in the U.S., the Mexican bank, or Trustee, takes instruction only from the Beneficiary of the trust. The Beneficiary has the right to use, occupy, lease/rent and possess the property, including the right to build and improve the property as well. The Beneficiary may also sell the property by transferring the rights to another individual. The term of the trust is 50 years, but the trust can be renewed for additional periods of 50 years indefinitely, thus allowing long term control over the property. Another question that is popular is about financing for foreigners. Mortgages are currently available to Mexicans with many of the major national Mexican banks, and the loans are done in pesos. However, currently there is little to no availability for traditional financing through American banking institutions. Some hard money lenders are available, but interest rates can easily be in the double digits. What many buyers are exploring now is “seller financing”. In some cases, seller’s offer financing on their property with specific terms that depend on down-payment, interest rate, and length of financing. This is becoming a more popular trend in Cabo, but it is only offered on a case by case basis and depends entirely on the seller’s willingness to finance a buyer and required terms. The housing market steadily improving over the last 18 months, 2013 shows great promise. I believe we are looking at exciting times to come in Cabo Real Estate as there are new developments building again and great pricing on quality properties all over. Our brokerage has seen a greater number of buyers in the market now compared to in the last few years and market times for listings are starting to decrease, showing a stronger, healthier market. Blake Harrington is a licensed CA Realtor and the Managing Partner of REmexico Real Estate Group with offices in Cabo San Lucas, San José, and Loreto.
