LOS CABOS & SOUTH BAJA by Michelle Monroy
Los Cabos (the capes) is in the southern most tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of three main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo and the East Cape. In between, along the coast as well as inland, you will find smaller towns and points of interest such as Santiago and Miraflores. THE BAJA SUR LOOP If you look at the Baja Sur map you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. There are ongoing road improvements and new highway constructions, so getting from one place to another will only get easier. The new highway from Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos is impressively well done, making it only 45 minutes away. Cabo San Lucas
Also just known as “Cabo”, is a tourist friendly town located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula that’s full of entertainment for every age and liking. You will find the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meeting at land’s end and the beautiful rock formations that create the famous Cabo arch. Cabo San Lucas has the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night. The Corridor A 40 Km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 25 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera
ready to snap some photos of the beautiful beaches and make a roadside stop at the Cabo Real arroyo for a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut). San José del Cabo Walking around San José will be more of a traditional Mexican town experience than Cabo San Lucas. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district. From November through June the popular “Art Walk” takes place every Thursday evening where the galleries welcome guests to view their exhibits, sip wine and dine at one of the five star restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride and explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.
and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer. East Cape People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. 60 miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers and folks who just want to get away from it all. *
Todos Santos Located on the Pacific Ocean side, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the Pacific’s breezes. La Paz La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours www.DestinoMagazine.com | OCTOBER 2013

activities SCUBA DIVING & SNORKELLING
This is your chance to experience the underwater life in the Sea of Cortez, also known as the “Aquarium of the World”. Prepare yourself for nature to show off as you swim side by side with colourful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, turtles and more. There are a few ways to snorkel in Cabo: book one of the popular snorkel tours, drive to a beach and swim off the shore or charter your own private boat. Tours last around two or three hours and cost around $40.00 dollars per person. If you’re venturing out on your own, stay away from the Pacific side; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports.
SNORKELLING SPOTS Pelican Rock This rock attracts many fish and is just an easy five minute boat ride from the Cabo San Lucas Marina. Lover’s Beach Accessible only by water taxi. Be aware that this is a high boat traffic area and it’s not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Cove Santa Maria is a regular destination for snorkel tours. If you choose to drive there, it’s a very easy swim from the shore to the reef. Chileno Bay This bay is also a common destination for snorkelling tours and has a safe roped off area for snorkellers. Cabo Pulmo Cabo Pulmo is a Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape that offers possibly the best snorkelling in the area. To get to this eight fingered coral reef you have take about a 2 hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it’s well worth it.

BOATING & FISHING Calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather...some would argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, the options to fit your needs are endless.
BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate you depending on what you need. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour around the arch, fishing for a couple of hours and a cruise to any of the beautiful bays for swimming. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the main difference between renting a yacht and a fishing boat is the cost.
Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers and pangas are more commonly used. Pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option, but cruisers will fit more people and be more comfortable if the sea is rough. When booking with a fishing boat operator, make sure they include proper safety equipment such as; life jackets, GPS, VHF radio and shark repellent!
FISHING
There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black &

Sport fishing flags commonly seen in Los Cabos:
Blue - takes place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers an abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate. No matter what your level of fishing experience is, Cabo won’t disappoint you.
What to Expect It’s recommended to make a reservation at least one day before. Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or can be added at an additional cost. The earlier you leave the better; trips usually begin around 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. 15% to 20% of your charter cost is a customary tip for the crew.
Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait you can buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire can also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

Tips:
Santa Maria Most people come to Los Cabos for a beach vacation and this area happens to have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. From floating in a turquoise bay with pink sand to riding some epic waves, each one offers something unique. Here is a list of the mustsee beaches to help you decide which one is your dream beach.
Cabo San Lucas MEDANO BEACH
This is where the action is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2 mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and family friendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. All water sports and activities are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the spot to do it. Its stunning view of land’s end and the vast entertainment options makes it a must-see. In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. You can walk through the east side

of the marina or access it via Avenida del Pescador street. Get prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, the only thing you can do is say “No Gracias.” Prices don’t vary too much from one water sports rental place to another; just talk to someone and break out those negotiation skills. Make a trip to Lover’s Beach while you’re there.
Tips:
Getting there is an adventure in itself due to the fact that it’s only reachable by boat or kayak. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Prices are around $15.00 per person. Ask your captain to cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves that you will instantly want to go explore. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll now find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so only swim on Lover’s Beach. Land’s End beside the famous arch. Only accessible by boat. There are a couple of vendors that offer beers and water but you won’t find any other services. A good idea is to spend the day at Medano Beach and take an hour or two to go to Lover’s Beach; this should be enough time to explore and enjoy this natural wonderland.
Location: Tips:
Along the Corridor Las Viudas (The Widows) beach is not visible from the road and is possibly the most private beach you will find on this list. What makes it unique are the rock formations that create small pools and coves where you can have a private and peaceful beach day. This beach is swimmable with caution, but if you find your own pool you can avoid the waves. Turn right at Km. 12.5 of the

Lover’s Beach
Las Viudas
A stunning horseshoe cove with coral coloured sand and an abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family friendly beach is relatively secluded, therefore you rarely run into beach vendors. Follow the sign that reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. No services and hardly any shade. You can rent umbrellas on the beach, but if you happen to have one bring it anyway. Bring snorkelling gear!
Chileno
A very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newly installed palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs for excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. This is the only beach with public rest rooms and it has plenty of palapas for shade. Follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. If you visit Chileno on a weekend make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and if you beat the crowds you’ll be guaranteed a palapa for that much needed shade. Bring Snorkelling gear!

San Jose del Cabo Palmilla
Palmilla is known for its family friendly calm waters and mile long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Take the Palmilla ramp exit at KM 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel.

Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa or bring your own umbrella. No services available.
Costa Azul If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot that doesn’t require driving out of town... this is it. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where Cabo Surf Hotel and Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and SUP boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer and in the winter it’s a good spot for snorkelling and swimming. Exit at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge. Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers.
Location: Tips:
La Playita
La Playita (the little beach) is a long stretch of beach where you will often find locals fishing from the shore and families with children enjoying the beach-front playground. On the right end of La Playita you will find a roped-off swimming area just outside the beautiful Puerto Los Cabos 500 slip marina entrance. To the left is the natural open beach where you can swim, skim-board and enjoy a peaceful beach day away from the crowds. Follow the signs to La Playita/Puerto Los Cabos form Boulevard Mijares in downtown San José del Cabo (across from the fire department). You will find new and well maintained bathrooms, palapas and fishing charters. There are no food services directly on the beach, but there are several casual restaurants in the surrounding area.
Location: Tips:
On the Pacific Cerritos
Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day on the beach or if you want to be active you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop. Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas
Location:
- Todos Santos highway. Watch the markers as there is no sign. Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area. Lounge chairs, restrooms, food and drinks are available at The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant.
Tips:
La Paz Balandra
A stunning bay that will take your breath away. The water level is shallow - you can walk back and forth in the bay and I think it only was about waist high - maybe more. The water is crystal clear with shades of blue turquoise. The sun glistens on the waters surface and make it twinkle. You won’t regret it visiting Playa Balandra! About 30 minutes from the boardwalk in La Paz. Simply follow the main drag along the boardwalk, then through Costa Baja Golf Course and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed. There are palapas, but not a lot. You can rent kayaks and snorkel gear.
Location:
Tips:
Loreto Isla Coronado
A wildlife reserve where visitors may anchor, snorkel, scuba and camp. The panga ride usually includes a cruise around the island where it’s very common to see sea lions, seals and even sea otters. The only swimmable beach on the island has pristine white sand and shallow crystal clear turquoise water, which creates ideal snorkelling conditions. Coronado Island is the ideal place for an adventure or to simply immerse yourself in nature and relax. About 7 miles or 30 minutes (on boat) northeast of Loreto. To get to Coronado Island you must take a boat or a panga. You will find pangas in Loreto’s Marina that you can hire to take you. The best option is to ask your concierge to arrange this for you. There are no services or restaurants on the beach. There are several large palapas with tables and benches and also an eco-restroom. Bring hiking shoes if you plan to explore the area. Bring Snorkelling gear!

At the Cabo Comedy Festival “Nothing shows a man’s character more than what he laughs at.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
...And The Giant of Comedy Award goes to… Budd Friedman! (Standing ovation) The man who hit upon the idea that was to become the Improvisation, the father of the Comedy Club, continues to bring stand-up comedy into the hearts and minds of everyone. This legendary businessman, producer and actor, has spent his entire adult life immersed in comedy, he created the concept of the stand-up comedy club, and helped develop such major comedic talents as Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, Jimmy Fallon, Judd Apatow, Ray Romano, Larry David, Richard Lewis, Bill Maher, Bette Midler, Lily Tomlin and on and on. To celebrate the Improv’s 50th anniversary, EPIX and Comedy Central are producing a one-hour special celebrating this very rare feat. The show will air December 6 for the first time, and it will feature (among others) Jimmy Fallon and Jerry Seinfeld talking together; Richard Lewis and Larry David chatting, arguing and fighting with each other; and interviews with Bill Maher, Jay Leno, Kathy Griffin, the entire Wayans family, Russell Brand and more. This year, the Cabo Comedy Festival is celebrated in his honour. Ladies and Gentlemen... Bud Friedman! Based on your experience, what makes laughter so important? What transformational energy you witness in people when you make them laugh? As has often been said, laughter is the best medicine. And I am living proof of that adage. For fifty years, I have been involved with stand-up comedy at the Improv and it has kept me young, vital and still interested in the art form. I have seen people walk into the Improv over the years, dragging their derrières behind them, and walking out two hours later slapping each other on the back and sharing another laugh or two in recalling what they heard in the showroom. What is the best advise you’ve heard? The best advice I ever heard was spoken to my class at CCNY when General David Sarnoff, founder of NBC, lectured our class and told us to “aim high and avoid mediocrity.”
If a 10 year old came to you, not knowing who you are, how would you respond this question: Who are you? I am a man who has spent his entire adult life immersed in comedy, who created the concept of the stand-up comedy club, and helped develop such major comedic talents as Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, Jimmy Fallon, Judd Apatow, Ray Romano, Larry David, Richard Lewis, Bill Maher, Bette Midler, Lily Tomlin and on and on… I am happily wed to my muse and partner, Alixandria Friedman, for the past thirty-two and a half years. Together we have four children and five wonderful grandchildren. And the latter part is as important to me as everything that came before that in the form of the Improv… Life is transient, everything changing, we all arise and pass away. How does Budd Friedman want to be remembered? … and that is how I wish to be remembered. How many times have you visited Los Cabos? What makes you love our town? This will be my fourth time to Los Cabos. It is a paradise surrounded by water and it is a place I never tire of visiting with my lovely wife Alixandria. We first came to Cabo when the Twin Dolphins was the only hotel on the peninsula, and we are delighted to see the growth in resorts and still the untouched natural beauty of the area. We hope that this Cabo Comedy Festival will be the first of many, many more to come. Make us laugh, tell us a joke. I leave the joke telling to the professionals … that’s why I’m so successful as a club owner.*

EL GANZO MUSIC Series ... presents By Yeye “Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy.” - Ludwig van Beethoven
Everything in the Universe is vibration. If you understand this principle, you understand the importance of the space and ambiance you choose to spend time in. Los Cabos is a wonderful place, everyone here is fully committed to create an extraordinary moment for you, the traveller, who comes here with a dream of paradise. After all, we are home to some of the favourite resorts and hotels in the world. The new talk of the town has been Hotel El Ganzo Design Boutique, Arts, Live Music, Marina and SPA. The vision? A contemporary castle by the ocean, one could say, where the activities at hand are a sport of leisure, art and wellness. El Ganzo is unique in its concept, they provide you with the exquisite experience of artists and musicians of the times. El Ganzo hotel inspiration is to promote las bellas artes, music, and to serve as a contemporary ‘mecenas’. For an artist a "mecenas" is a dream come true, it is someone who takes care of your every need so you can devote your energy and creativity to your Art. For the community, a "mecenas" represents an era of high cultural and artistic production. The mecenas herself, not only is somebody who enjoys the arts intimately at heart, but also he who chooses to use his wealth to support fine arts with the natural expectation to benefit from this investment through the success of their prodigy. Just think of the Médici family, whose many of their artists are known to this date as the most important representatives of the Renaissance era.
MIDDLE: Door to the Underground Recording Studio BOTTOM: Underground Recording Studio Photos courtesy of El Ganzo
Hotel El Ganzo hosts a cultural program dedicated to the Arts. It is simple trade. The artist is invited to stay at the hotel and be pampered, and the artist in exchange for such hospitality delivers a performance of his or her art which becomes part of El Ganzo's Art collection. Since this edition focuses in Music, we spoke with Mark Rudin, El Ganzo's Music Director,
whose experience as a musician, producer and sound engineer is well directed to coordinate an innovative Music program that translates into El Ganzo Series and El Ganzo Series PRESENTS. The musician in house records at El Ganzo's underground recording studio and also presents a live performance for Los Cabos to enjoy, free of charge. Mark was in the middle of his journey as a singer/songwriter when he was invited to be El Ganzo's music director and studio manager. As a musician with experience in Los Angeles and Nashville, he recognises the great contribution El Ganzo's music program is for Los Cabos Musical scene (where most musicians are devotees to the tourist industry and dedicate their talent to entertain only playing “covers”, paying little attention to their original work) He hopes that the talented artists that visit El Ganzo Hotel from the International, National, and local Music community, inspire the appreciation for musicians original work and its cultural importance. Mark gives example by playing his original music every Thursday at 8:30 PM... Of course, at Hotel El Ganzo. Sooner than later is to be expected a Musical Festival and a CD promoting El Ganzo's Music Collection. Yes, it is scientific fact that we, as everything in the Universe, are vibration and music helps us harmonise with each other. Art is the peaceful path to evolution and freedom, and well freedom, isn’t that why you love it here?*
Celebrating Los Cabos Music By Marilyn Graham
“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” - Plato “I cannot imagine a world without music, it is the language of the Gods.” - Marilyn Graham Let’s take time to celebrate music this month. We are so fortunate to have such an abundance of gifted musicians living and working in Los Cabos. Whether you like ja zz , soul , L atin , sal sa , ro ck , p op, oldies , ne w age , symphonic , or mariachi music , Los Cabos now offers it all.
Sammy H agar, American rock vocalist, guitarist and songwriter, continues to be a Los Cabos icon and plays music at Cabo Wabo several times a year. Brian F lynn is also one of our favorite local rock ‘n rollers, has performed with the likes of Sammy Hagar, Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, The Marshall Tucker Bank, The Drifters, The Platters, and lots more, and you can find him in various venues, recently at Two for the Road. P ur a Vida performs electric rock to a world beat, music for enjoyment and dancing. You do not want to miss P ulp os en Su Tinta , the new version lead by guitarist David F lores. They play pop and rock but are very versatile and can also perform beautiful “flamingo pop fusion”. David performs with J onathan Orozco on keyboards, Hugo N avarro on bass, Luis Cuell ar on drums, Ger a ld o E scober on percussion and K arl a K a ssaneth on vocals. Vocalist Robert Dudley and his group are always fun, especially if you are interested in oldies but goodies, they often perform at Baja Brewery. If you like jazz standards, soul, Latin or pop, Da line J ones is a singer who you do not want to miss. A powerful beautiful voice, she performs with some of Mexico’s top musicians…the remarkably talented Diego R amirez on piano or keyboard with the fabulous drummer J oaquin G onz a lez . Other groups you do not want to miss: Sha lom with a great guitarist Tito Rodriguez, and Edgar Mendes, a gifted pianist and singer who is talented and fun. The 7 Seas offers lovely full moon jazz concerts. Last time I visited, Ivan O ’ Camp o on keyboards, Howie Clif ton on saxophone and Sergio Hesting on drums performed a great evening of jazz standards. Most of the best jazz musicians have performed here at one time or another. And speaking of jazz venues, you really do not want to miss Two for the Road, the only jazz club in San Lucas, with singer K athy Daniel s and pianist M ontana in the Wyndham Hotel area of Cabo San Lucas, local A-15. If you want to listen to some beautiful vocalists, take note of M arcie Ca stro , Luna It zel , Charlene Mignault. Marcie sings and plays piano, often at the Barceló, or other local venues and weddings, her specialty being Brazilian music. She also knows how to get the party going! You can find Luna Itzel, dressed in her Mexican finest, at the Grand Mayan. Luna Itzel has one of the most beautiful and expressive voices on Mexico’s contemporary music scene. Some really fun guys from Cuba, L os T rillizos, they will have you dancing and smiling and having a great time! Also, Alexey Gonzalez from Cuba, son of one of Los Trillizos, he has the voice, the dance moves and the showmanship to add something special to any musical event. Rosalia de Cuba is a Cuban singer who often performs in the Tropicana in San José del Cabo. All of them perform Cuban, jazz, Latin, salsa and fun dance music…take your pick! If you happen to know anything about Andean music you might enjoy listening to saxophonist Hugo M oreno. He has been playing music since 1978 and has performed in Mexico, the United States, Madrid and Barcelona. He has collaborated with musical groups such as “Llamanka”, “Killiwa”, “Kumara”, and “Bossa Two”. So add that to the variety of music available. Now I know I am forgetting someone very important and also, new groups and individuals out there. But I’ll save them for a feature article next time. And in the meantime, go out there and enjoy our incredible music scene!!!*

By Michelle Monroy It’s hard to think about Cabo San Lucas and not think of the multi-platinum musician, songwriter and entrepreneur, Sammy Hagar. Raised in Fontana, California, Hagar had his musical beginnings in San Francisco and the Bay Area in 1967 and continues to constantly tour and play music. With multiple restaurants and bars, spirit brands, platinum albums, hundreds of sold out concert appearances and an autobiography under his belt, he still finds time to visit his beloved Cabo and continues to celebrate his birthday at Cabo Wabo Cantina every October.
A chat with Sammy... Can you tell Destino Magazine readers about your first trip to Baja and what made you fall in love with Cabo? It was the early 80s and Keith Richards had just gotten married in Cabo San Lucas. I saw a picture in a magazine of an infinity pool going off into the beautiful ocean. You could see the turquoise water, golden sand, cactus and palm trees and I said, where is that? I have to go there, that looks like my dream come true place. I decided to visit in October for my birthday and stayed at the Twin Dolphin hotel. After that, I returned every year for my birthday, which turned into the ongoing birthday bash. It was an October thing, the weather was beautiful, the beaches were fantastic and nobody knew who I was, not one person, so I thought, this is a great hideaway for me. That kept me coming back. You are considered an icon of Los Cabos; when you founded Cabo Wabo back in 1990, did you ever imagine the impact it would have on the sleepy fishing town it used to be? No I did not, I had no idea, and it was not my intention to make it into a popular tourist attraction. My intention was to have a place where I could bring my friends and play music and party with them. MTV did that big special of Cabo Wabo’s grand opening with Van Halen; they gave us three million dollars worth of advertising for the three months leading up to the event and people started talking about it. I wrote a song called Cabo Wabo, that said, “go there once, you’ll be there twice.” The ones that would make it down here told other people back home and I think that’s how it happened, it just exploded. A lot of people say that Cabo isn’t what it used to be and I disagree completely. Cabo, even as built up as it is and as commercialized as it’s gotten, is still one of the greatest destinations in the world. It might even be better than it used to be because now you get things that you didn’t get before, like great culinary experiences. With new Cabo Wabo and Sammy’s Rockin’ Bar & Grill locations, Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum, and your new album titled Sammy Hagar & Friends launched on September 24th 2013, fans are wondering, what is next? Any new ventures planned? --Laughs-- I think that’s enough for now. Right now I’m committed to promoting all those things. I don’t just start and idea and move on to the next one. I start an idea and then I go out and
“...turquoise water, golden sand, cactus and palm trees...my dream come true place” promote it and try to make it successful before I move on to the next thing. I have to get my rum and Sammy’s Rockin’ Beach Bar & Grill up to where Cabo Wabo is before I can jump ship and start another project. The way I promote my spirit brands and restaurants is through my music. I write new music, then I go on tour and play it, I do interviews and I talk about all this. In the long run, it’s all about the music. Hopefully it always will be. What is a regular day in Cabo like for Sammy Hagar? I wake up in the morning, as early as possible, while it’s still cool, I go for a wonderful walk on the beach and swim in the ocean. I come back, have breakfast and coffee outside and just enjoy the beauty of sitting on the beach, I’m telling you, to me, that’s the best seat in the house. I do silly things now and then; I grab my fishing poles and go shore fishing by the rocks. I very seldom catch a fish; I’m a lousy fisherman. Another thing I enjoy is making my own sea salt. When the tide is quiet I take a walk down to the beach to collect some water to make it at home. We actually use my sea salt at the Cabo Wabo restaurant. So, I mess with my salt, I play my guitar for a little bit and I always take a siesta after lunch. In the evenings, I look forward to going to the Cantina (Cabo Wabo) and playing music with the house band or whoever is in town. I have a few tequilas, go to bed, and start all over again. I think that’s the perfect day. => continued
What is your favorite beach in Cabo? I like beaches that have rocks you can climb and tide pools when the tide is low. There’s a beach between Las Ventanas hotel and the old hotel Cabo San Lucas that has some great rocks. The Hilton’s beach is beautiful, but what I really enjoy is the rocky area at the end of that cove. What are your favourite restaurants in Cabo? There are so many great restaurants in Los Cabos, dinning here is at the levels of places like L.A. I really think that the food at Cabo Wabo is underestimated because people think that it’s just a party and rock and roll place, but our restaurant offers fine dining Mexican food. For me it’s perfect because I can call in the afternoon and they will make me anything I want. The Chef and Jorge and all the people involved in the restaurant upstairs are capable of preparing the best food in Cabo. But, I don’t always eat there, so I think for fine dinning you have places like Capella Pedregal that has great high-end food. Niksan has great sushi and I think Chef Larbi at Agua in One&Only Palmilla is one of the best Chefs in Mexico. Flora Farms is great and they are creating a fun drink for me with Sammy’s Beach Rum. My favorite is going to the taco stands off the main drag, you can’t go wrong at those places. The carnitas at Los Michoacanos are the best I’ve ever had. I would eat there every day if I could. After 22 yearly celebrations, 2013 being number 23, what is one of your favorite Birthday Bash moments? I have to say, probably my 60th because, first of all, my mother was still alive and she was there. A lot of friends surprised me and came down without telling me, like Ted Nugent, Toby Keith of course, Chad Smith, and many more. It just seemed like it was a milestone. I don’t think that there’s been one Birthday Bash that isn’t just as great as the one before and I’m looking forward to this year being, once again, the best one ever.*

2013 Black & Blue Schedule
thrill anglers while delighting spectators The event is fun, the marina echoes with laughter each afternoon as anglers try to top fishing tales; tourists are drawn to the scales. < Eager to be a part of the gaiety and to watch the weigh-in and fireworks.
In 2012 the winning team, “Frantic Pace,” earned a remarkable $2,396,800.

n a town where fishing
tournaments are almost as common as chips and salsa, the Bisbee series does for sportfishing in Cabo what the America’s Cup does for sailing. Held in Cabo San Lucas each October, the two back-to-back events draw eager crowds of curious spectators who gather along the marina walkways to shop, party and be part of the excitement. Music blares, trinkets are thrown to the crowd by staff members atop the scale until a huge fish arrives to be weighed in front of the Puerto Paraiso Entertainment Plaza. Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore Charity Tournament, October 18-20 (two fishing days) is a laid-back affair, providing unique camaraderie with a game-fish format (billfish, tuna and dorado.) It attracted 80 teams with 466 anglers competing for $486,590 in cash prizes in 2012 with 100% of the tournament proceeds donated to local charities. Last year’s beneficiaries were the boys at Casa Hogar, a local orphanage receiving a check for $102,810. Big fish and bigger money draw top teams and crews to compete for millions in Bisbee’s Black & Blue
20
Marlin Tournament, October 2226 (three fishing days.) Last year’s event attracted some 740 anglers aboard 106 boats. The winning team, “Frantic Pace,” earned a remarkable $2,396,800, second only to the 2006’s $3,902,998 to winner “Bad Company,” setting a tournament record as well as the largest amount paid out to a single team in a billfish tournament. Bisbee’s Black & Blue Marlin Tournament was conceived in 1982 by Bob Bisbee while working at Balboa Island in Newport Beach, California, as a sales promotion for his store, Bisbee’s Sportfishing Center. It was an informal competition among friends that attracted a handful of boats with the angler catching the largest black or blue marlin winning $10,000 in prize money. As the small flotilla began its journey from Southern California down the Baja peninsula, Bisbee never dreamed that this friendly competition would grow into a family-run business that would impact the world of big-fish tournaments and still be in existence 33 years later, annually hosting a fleet of boats the size of a small navy in three events, including one at East Cape.

turtle wisdom “To be what we are, and to become what we are capable of becoming, is the only end of life.” Robert Louis Stevenson Shaka! Hang Loose. These ancient creatures have been on Earth for around 215 million years, they say. As Esopo tales us, it is not the most talented, beautiful, powerful - and certainly not the fastest - but the most persevering and constant who arrives first to the finish line. Granted, life’s finish line is not where everyone wants to end, first. Which is maybe why to observe a turtle has the quality of a healthy teaching. In another tale, Fu Hsi, the first emperor of China (2852–2737 B.C.) reputed to be the inventor of writing, fishing and trapping, is said to have observed a turtle emerging from the Yellow River. Knowing that true wisdom came from the direct and close observation of nature, he had a sudden realization of the significance of eight symbols he saw on the turtle’s back. He saw how the sets of three solid or broken lines, the trigrams, reflected the movement of energy in life on Earth. This knowledge is recorded in one of the oldest books known as the I Ching The book of Changes. Turtles, like us, can live from ten to a hundred years, and as with us, it depends on the quality of life they live. The environment, the predators, the food they eat, are all important factors, but if we were to observe an inner quality as an example of their endurance, without a doubt it is the quality that we identify most with the turtle. Turtles are notoriously slow movers. In a era of speed like ours, many judge a slow mover to be retarded, useless and dorky, but one might ask why is then that, in many cultures, sea turtles are a symbol of wisdom. Time is health, when is well understood as nonlinear. As with everything, it is all about perspective. Speed and impatience are the character of our times, we expect everything to be available at “this moment”, in a google second, and when somebody says “there is no time” empathy flows in the air. Immediate, fast, accelerated, the first world timing that qualifies time as money has made of time, maybe the most valuable resource of the century, as well as the stress generator behind most unbalances in health. Yes, Doctor’s most common advice to the ill is “take rest” “slow down”. Honouring what makes us different and unique, it is fair to say that what is fast for you might be slow for me, and vice versa, so let’s leave it like this: Slow down enough to be present. In wisdom, to be present might represent 100 years of life, not any kind of life, but a healthy life. That, friends, is turtle wisdom. Hang loose Cabo!* Five species of sea turtle are found along Mexico’s Baja California peninsula; a region that provides both nesting habitat and vital feeding grounds for turtles from as far away as Japan and Indonesia. Each year in June, the shores of Los Cabos become the nesting grounds for four different species of endangered sea turtles – Loggerhead, Black, Leatherback and Olive Ridley. Starting in October, all through May, Eco tourism companies such as seethewild.org offer camps for turtle research, providing you with in-country transportation, camping, guides, activities, and most meals. You can plan 7 days of your itinerary to do some sustainable travel and participate in hands-on research of green turtles with members of the Grupo Tortuguero while camping and kayaking in beautiful Magdalena Bay. Beach Asana
Now. Happiness is in the awareness of what is happening now, with the clear understanding that it is always changing. The past, the future, all combinations of the now. Your now is here, in your breath. Your breath and your mind exist hand in hand, as your thoughts change your breath changes, hence if you observe your breath you learn to know yourself better and by breathing consciously you become master of your own mind. Once this happens, you stop being the victim of your own reactiveness to the world around you and start living a life of equanimity and clear intent. You become the master of yourself. Now, find your breath, stretch a little, close your eyes, listen to yourself, honour how you feel, remember your intention, sit still and let the universe catch up with you . It is in the now when your freedom enjoys space, or your space shows how much freedom you enjoy. You are in Los Cabos, here is the beach, here is the sand, here is a coconut tree behind you, here is sunshine, an escape from worldly matters perhaps but from the Self it is impossible to hide. Here is an opportunity to be present, walk on pristine sand, swim in crystal clear ocean waters, watch the sun rise and the sunset with the awareness of how precious it is to be you. Nobody else has the privilege. Do what you must to feel comfortable in your own skin. A great asana to centre yourself is Tree pose, vriksasana, for obvious reasons, there is nothing more rooted than a tree...here, a palm tree.
Tree pose:
Find your breath. Every movement corresponds to a breath. Standing tall, shift your weight slightly onto the left foot, keeping the inner foot firm to the floor, and bend your right knee. Reach down with your right hand and clasp your right ankle. Draw your right foot up and place the sole against the inner left thigh; if possible, press the right heel into the inner left groin, toes pointing toward the floor. Rest your hands on the top rim of your pelvis. Make sure the pelvis is in a neutral position, with the top rim parallel to the floor. Lengthen your tailbone toward the floor. Firmly press the right foot sole against the inner thigh and resist with the outer left leg. Press your hands together in prayer position. Gaze softly at a fixed point in front of you, find your balance. Are you breathing? Step back to standing tall with an exhalation and repeat for the same length of time with the legs reversed.

BEAUTY Cleanse Swami Sri Yukestewar teaches us in his book “The Holy Science” that experiment proves that a nonirritating diet natural to the vegetarian is, almost without exception, admirably suited to children’s development, both physical and mental. Their minds, understanding, will, the principal faculties, temper, and general disposition are also properly developed. Grains, fruits, vegetables, pure natural milk and pure water openly exposed to air and sun are the best natural food for man. These are easily assimilated. When unnatural foods that are uncongenial with our system enter the stomach, they are not properly assimilated. Mixed with the blood, they accumulate in the excretory and other organs not properly adapted to them. When they cannot find their way out, they subside in tissue crevices by the law of gravitation; and, being fermented, produce diseases, mental and physical, and ultimately lead to premature death. Extraordinary means such as fasting are usually methods used to cleanse the body from these toxins. One day a week, to drink only water with lemon or a natural juice will make you feel energized and beautiful. The more you get in tune with the disciplines of your body the longer you will be able to endure a healthy fast, but fasting is not necessarily the only way to cleanse, by natural living on a nonirritating diet, such as the one above referred to, men gain a calmness of mind which every psychologist knows is the most favourable to mental activity and to a clear understanding, as well as to a judicial way of thinking. Wouldn’t these qualities make a world full of beautiful people?* www.DestinoMagazine.com | OCTOBER 2013

Are you wearing Silver? Silver (AG), is the metal related to the moon. It is a heavy noble metal. Silver is one of the best conductor of thermal and electric energy, therefor it is used a lot in electric and electronic contacts. Silver reflects a 95% of the light it receives and it is the favourite metal of psychics because it promotes clairvoyance and extra-sensorial perception. Silver is said to have many curative qualities, to be refreshing to the skin and protective against negativity. An infinitive of great physical and mystical properties are attributed to this metal, truth is that its history would have other stories to tell if Silver wasn’t appreciated by our taste as a precious metal. Until XVI century, silver was a relatively scarce metal in the “Old World”, with the exception of some exploitations in Spain and Greece. It was until “La Nueva España” found important deposits of silver in cities like Pachuca, Guanajuato o Zacatecas when silver became central to the coffers of the crown. At some point Nueva España was producing such a quantity of silver, it is said that at the beginning of XIX Century coins wedged had a value up to 27 millions pesos. Abundance was such that while Jimmelsfiirt mine in Germany (the most abundant in Sajonia) gave in a common year 10 000 marcs of silver, the richest in Mexico “La Valenciana” gave 360 000. Nueva España’s annual production was 10 times richer than all other mines in Europe. This economic splendour happened mainly because silver was destined to be coins and to serve as money in Nueva España and other countries to which it was exported. Coins were wedged at the Royal House of Money (La Casa de la Moneda), build by the Crown for that sole purpose. Mexican cities (like Guanajuato, Real del Catorce, Zacatecas, Sombrerete, Fresnillo, Guarisamey, Taxco, Bolaños, Real del Monte, Pachuca and Zimapán whose history is deeply related with the mining culture), silversmith craft, commercial routes, the plateros guild, our national history, all are directly affected by the enormous silver exploitation done during the Spanish Colonialism in Mexico. The silversmith’s craft is one of the most significative activities in our history, its extraction as a precious mineral and its importance as an element in the opening of new roads like El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, and even its presence in faraway latitudes through maritime trade, are essential part of the importance silver has in our daily lives today. As you look into the past you can find silver use in liturgical lifestyle, sub aquatic archeology, and its presence is well documented as part of the viceregal gastronomy tasting. Silver is not only important in the art world, but also has played an important role in social and historical aspects such as the organization of the “plateros” guild, silver as a dowry, all which leads us to contemporary silversmith’s craft. Silversmith’s craft (orfebrería) finds an important start in the year of 1880, it was in this period when concrete styles were developed as a response to a nationalist aesthetic with great precolombine accents rooted in aboriginal popular art, styles which ignited an innovative vision in the metallurgical science of beauty

which took Mexican design to reach an international level of recognition, even in the world of art decó. It is the curators’s opinion, it has been the silversmith skill and the love for tradition the foundation to our modern day production in series, which is based in a constant search for a language associated to what is contemporary, the combination of materials and the effort made to generate the author stamp and simultaneously be competitive with the global market. Silver has been there through viceroyalty, has observed international tendencies during the Modernism, has been part of globalization embracing new technology that helped silversmith’s craft turn towards Industrial design, giving the artist the opportunity to produce in series and even export their creations. USA is home to some of the most important collections of Mexican Silver design. Early in 1931, USA Embassador to Mexico Dwight Morrow remarked to architect and writer William Spratling (Sherwood Anderson and Other Famous Creoles) who had moved to Mexico in 1929, “What a pity, Bill, that of all the thousands of tons of silver sent back from Taxco to the old world over the centuries, that none of this ever stayed here nor was utilized to create an industry or economy for Taxco.” Taxco had been the site of silver mines for centuries, but had never been considered a location where jewellery and objects of silver were designed and made. Subsequently, Spratling hired an experienced goldsmith from Iguala who moved to Taxco and created silver jewellery of Spratling’s design. These earliest designs were based on preColumbian motifs as well as simple themes utilizing rope borders, strap designs and other such basic ideas. New silversmiths were trained through an apprentice system which Spratling established early in the formation of his shop. Those who showed promise worked under the direction of maestros. Over time many of these artisans opened shops of their own – all with Spratling’s support. Most of the men trained at Las Delicias taller who later opened their own shops, such as Antonio Pineda (1919-2009), became very successful designers. During the Second World War, department stores in United States were unable to import merchandise from Europe, and many retail stores purchased luxury goods in Mexico. The craft, the skill and the diversity of the techniques used by the silversmiths has been preserved throughout time, transmitted from generation to generation. Casas plateras such as Tane, whose production has been fundamental to spread the Mexican legacy of silver design, all great exponents respected nationally and internationally who influenced and gestated its trajectory - from workshops such as Platería Mayers, Victor´s, Plata Villa, Los Castillo y Los Ballesteros, to great founding authors of modern Silversmith design, such as Antonio Pineda, Salvador Vaca Terán y William Spratling, are to be remembered in the history of Silver as a living example of the Mexican Silver inspiration.
François Paris is a French Artist from Paris living in San José del Cabo. His art is described as having no plan or premeditation, himself as a free spirit that allows him to let go following the impulse of creation, enjoying the element of surprise. His exhibitors define his universe as a pleasure for the eyes and a wink at your imagination. Francois has had a varied career as a furniture designer, sculptor and painter , and he’s been creating art for locals-in-theknow ever since he has been in Los Cabos. Art is culture, an it is maybe because an artist has no choice but to evolve as its consequence, or maybe because the popular applause is not to be ignored, that Francois has partner with Emmy Award winner artist Jon Teschner (whose work in the fine arts appears in collections worldwide) to open an Art Center with the idea to create a platform for local and international artists of all levels to learn, educate, entertain and sell their work.

Useful Tips Driving Renting a car will let you enjoy the freedom of exploring the Los Cabos area without having to depend on taxis. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating to some, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there actually is some organization within the chaos. Here are some tips if you’re behind the wheel: Road Signage - Most signs are self explanatory, but here are a few that might need interpretation: ARROYO
TOPE
ALTO
Dry riverbed
Speed bump
Stop
NO ESTACIONARSE
ESTACIONAMIENTO
No parking
Parking
Gas stations - There are two types of gasoline: Magna or verde (green) which is regular and Premium or roja (red). Lleno means full. Tipping the attendant around $10.00 pesos (less than a dollar) is customary.
Money and Currency
Exchange rates - Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will most likely get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate of $12.00 pesos to $1.00 dollar. Cash or Card? - Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted but you often run into cash only places, especially at restaurants, so always carry cash or ask before.
ATMs - There are many ATMs all over Cabo. Some only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option of pesos or dollars in one. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing. Try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying more commissions. Commissions on the street ATMs are higher than going to a bank’s ATM.

REAL ESTATE
Los Cabos Real Estate News Real Estate FAQs by Blake Harrington
HGTV’s hit show “House Hunters International” aired in September two episodes featuring Los Cabos.
O
ur beautiful community of Los Cabos was put on a worldwide spotlight last month as HGTV’s hit television series “House Hunters International” aired two episodes that were recently filmed in Cabo. Every so often, Cabo gets big international press exposure and this is another event that impressed viewers around the globe. House Hunters International is a 30 minute reality show that takes the viewer through the experience of buying or renting a home abroad. With mostly American contributors, the program shows both the joys and obstacles that can arise from a move to another country, directly from the perspective of real people. The viewers get a chance to see different parts of the world while being educated on the Real Estate conditions and pricing in the area. House Hunters International has been a big hit since its inception.
Here in Cabo, the two episodes featured local Realtor/Agent Blake Harrington, also Managing Partner of REmexico Real Estate Group. “This is a great opportunity for Los Cabos to be seen on a worldwide media platform like HGTV. Cabo is especially beautiful and attracts all types of Real Estate investors”, Blake explains. “These episodes cast a spotlight on our region and gave viewers a real-life look into the Cabo lifestyle and our Real Estate market. It’s very exciting for everyone!“ The first episode featured Bonnie Chase and Kale Cowell. This young couple is making the move to Cabo from Phoenix and looking for that perfect paradise getaway that can also serve as a full time residence for them and their two dogs. As the episode progressed, you really got a chance to learn about who they are and what they are really looking for in a home in Los Cabos. The second episode featured Antonio and Paris Buchanan. Successful entrepreneurs with a variety of different businesses, the Buchanans love to travel and fell in love with Cabo on their first visit. The episode showed their search for a vacation home to purchase and how their desire to accommodate their big family plays into their selection of the perfect home.
A common question buyers have is about financing for foreigners. Mortgages are currently available to Mexicans with many of the major national Mexican banks, and the loans are done in pesos. However, currently there is little to no availability for traditional financing through American banking institutions. Some hard money lenders are available, but interest rates can easily be in the double digits. What many buyers are exploring now is “seller financing”. In some cases, seller’s offer financing on their property with specific terms that depend on down-payment, interest rate, and length of financing. This is becoming a more popular trend in Cabo, but it is only offered on a case by case basis and depends entirely on the seller’s willingness to finance a buyer and required terms.
