LOS CABOS & SOUTH BAJA by Michelle Monroy
Los Cabos (the capes) is in the southern most tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of three main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo and the East Cape. In between, along the coast as well as inland, you will find smaller towns and points of interest such as Santiago and Miraflores. THE BAJA SUR LOOP If you look at the Baja Sur map you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. There are ongoing road improvements and new highway constructions, so getting from one place to another will only get easier. The new highway from Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos is impressively well done, making it only 45 minutes away. Cabo San Lucas Also just known as “Cabo”, is a tourist friendly town located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula that’s full of entertainment for every age and liking. You will find the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meeting at land’s end and the beautiful rock formations that create the famous Cabo arch. Cabo San Lucas has the liveliest beach
in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

The Corridor A 40 Km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 25 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready to snap some photos of the beautiful beaches and make a roadside stop at the Cabo Real arroyo for a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).
La Paz La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.
San José del Cabo Walking around San José will be more of a traditional Mexican town experience than Cabo San Lucas. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district. From November through June the popular “Art Walk” takes place every Thursday evening where the galleries welcome guests to view their exhibits, sip wine and dine at one of the five star restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride and explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.
East Cape People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. 60 miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers and folks who just want to get away from it all. *

This is your chance to experience the underwater life in the Sea of Cortez, also known as the “Aquarium of the World”. Prepare yourself for nature to show off as you swim side by side with colourful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, turtles and more. There are a few ways to snorkel in Cabo: book one of the popular snorkel tours, drive to a beach and swim off the shore or charter your own private boat. Tours last around two or three hours and cost around $40.00 dollars per person. If you’re venturing out on your own, stay away from the Pacific side; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports.
SNORKELLING SPOTS Pelican Rock This rock attracts many fish and is just an easy five minute boat ride from the Cabo San Lucas Marina. Lover’s Beach Accessible only by water taxi. Be aware that this is a high boat traffic area and it’s not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Cove Santa Maria is a regular destination for snorkel tours. If you choose to drive there, it’s a very easy swim from the shore to the reef. Chileno Bay This bay is also a common destination for snorkelling tours and has a safe roped off area for snorkellers. Cabo Pulmo Cabo Pulmo is a Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape that offers possibly the best snorkelling in the area. To get to this eight fingered coral reef you have take about a 2 hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it’s well worth it.

Note: travel time is from Cabo San Lucas marina Land’s End Intermediate-Advanced 50’-60’ and just 5 minutes by boat you’re swimming with sea lions and moray eels. Also a sunken boat can be seen in the Falls. Sand Falls Beginners - Advanced 30’-100’ Steep sand banks go down sharply into a canyon filled with tropical fish. A short boat ride from shore, the canyon runs from the depths of the Cabo San Lucas bay to within 30 feet off shore. Pelican Rock Beginners - 25’-80’ Just 5 minute boat trip to this large rock that attracts many tropical fish. Neptune’s Finger Advanced - 80’-100’ Spectacular canyon wall dive. Cabeza de Ballena Beginners - 20’-40’ 25 minute boat ride to dive through large boulders with lots of fish.

Santa María Cave Beginners - 20’-40’ - 35 minutes by boat, or dive from the beach. The entrance to Santa Maria canyon has a huge variety of fish who feed right from your hand. Chileno Beginners - 30’-70’ - 35 minute boat ride and a sandy and rocky bottom. PARKING Lots of turtles sited here, tropical fish, night dives. El Gavilán Intermediate/Advanced - 70’-100’ - 35 minutes boat time. Rocky ledge leading into a canyon where groupers and larger fish are often sited. Blow Hole Beginners/Advanced - 30’-70’ - 35 minutes boat ride from San Lucas, or just 10 minutes from Chileno beach. Rocky valleys present a variety of fish. Las Salinas Beginners - 30’-45’ - 1.4 hours by boat from San Lucas, or 1 hour by boat from La Playita. A sunken Japanese fishing boat attracts a large assortment of fish. Gordo Banks Advanced - 110’-120’ - 1 hour boat from La Playita, there is a seamount where you can see marlin, hammerheads, skip jacks and at times huge manta rays. Cabo Pulmo Beginner/Advanced - 30’-100’ - 1 hour drive East of San José on the paved road. 5 minutes by boat you’ll find the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez.

BOATING & FISHING Calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather...some would argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, the options to fit your needs are endless.
BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate you depending on what you need. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour around the arch, fishing for a couple of hours and a cruise to any of the beautiful bays for swimming. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the main difference between renting a yacht and a fishing boat is the cost.
Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers and pangas are more commonly used. Pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option, but cruisers will fit more people and be more comfortable if the sea is rough. When booking with a fishing boat operator, make sure they include proper safety equipment such as; life jackets, GPS, VHF radio and shark repellent!

Blue - takes place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers an abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate. No matter what your level of fishing experience is, Cabo won’t disappoint you.
What to Expect It’s recommended to make a reservation at least one day before. Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or can be added at an additional cost. The earlier you leave the better; trips usually begin around 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. 15% to 20% of your charter cost is a customary tip for the crew.
Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait you can buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire can also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

GOLFING With the desert meeting the Sea of Cortez as a backdrop, there is no doubt why Los Cabos has become a championship golf destination over the years. From Nicklaus to Fazio, many of the big names in golf have designed courses in this unique landscape. Green fees vary based on the membership status of the golfer, time of day, season of the year and other factors. Many courses also offer a reduced rate later in the day during twilight hours. Appropriate golf attire is required on all courses and club rental prices range from $35 to $ 65.
Cabo San Lucas Country Club This course was designed by Roy Dye and is conveniently located outside of Cabo San Lucas and is the only one with views of Land’s End. Most people come to Los Cabos for a beach vacation and this area happens to have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. From floating in a turquoise bay with pink sand to riding some epic waves, each one offers something unique. Here is a list of the must-see beaches to help you decide which one is your dream beach.
Cabo San Lucas
Along the Corridor Las Viudas
Las Viudas (The Widows) beach is not visible from the road and is possibly the most private beach you will find on this list. What makes it unique are the rock formations that create small pools and coves where you can have a private and peaceful beach day. This beach is swimmable with caution, but if you find your own pool you can avoid the waves. Turn right at Km. 12.5 of the corridor and follow the dirt road down to the beach. There is a sign that reads “Las Viudas” but keep your eyes peeled because the entrance sneaks up on you. You won’t find any services or vendors so bring all your beach essentials with you.

Santa Maria A stunning horseshoe cove with coral coloured sand and an abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family friendly beach is relatively secluded, therefore you rarely run into beach vendors. Follow the sign that reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. No services and hardly any shade. You can rent umbrellas on the beach, but if you happen to have one bring it anyway. Bring snorkelling gear!

Chileno
A very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newly installed palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs for excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. This is the only beach with public rest rooms and it has plenty of palapas for shade. Follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. If you visit Chileno on a weekend make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and if you beat the crowds you’ll be guaranteed a palapa for that much needed shade. MEDANO BEACH
This is where the action is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2 mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and family friendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. All water sports and activities are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the spot to do it. Its stunning view of land’s end and the vast entertainment options makes it a mustsee. In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. You can walk through the east side of the marina or access it via Avenida del Pescador street. Get prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, the only thing you can do is say “No Gracias.” Prices don’t vary too much from one water sports rental place to another; just talk to someone and break out those negotiation skills. Make a trip to Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

Lover’s Beach
Getting there is an adventure in itself due to the fact that it’s only reachable by boat or kayak. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Prices are around $15.00 per person. Ask your captain to cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves that you will instantly want to go explore. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll now find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so only swim on Lover’s Beach. Land’s End beside the famous arch. Only accessible by boat. There are a couple of vendors that offer beers and water but you won’t find any other services. A good idea is to spend the day at Medano Beach and take an hour or two to go to Lover’s Beach; this should be enough time to explore and enjoy this natural wonderland.

Palmilla
Isla Coronado
Palmilla is known for its family friendly calm waters and mile long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Take the Palmilla ramp exit at KM 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa or bring your own umbrella. No services available.

Costa Azul
A wildlife reserve where visitors may anchor, snorkel, scuba and camp. The panga ride usually includes a cruise around the island where it’s very common to see sea lions, seals and even sea otters. The only swimmable beach on the island has pristine white sand and shallow crystal clear turquoise water, which creates ideal snorkelling conditions. Coronado Island is the ideal place for an adventure or to simply immerse yourself in nature and relax. About 7 miles or 30 minutes (on boat) northeast of Loreto. To get to Coronado Island you must take a boat or a panga. You will find pangas in Loreto’s Marina that you can hire to take you. The best option is to ask your concierge to arrange this for you. There are no services or restaurants on the beach. There are several large palapas with tables and benches and also an eco-restroom. Bring hiking shoes if you plan to explore the area. Bring Snorkelling gear!

If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot that doesn’t require driving out of town... this is it. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where Cabo Surf Hotel and Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and SUP boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer and in the winter it’s a good spot for snorkelling and swimming. Exit at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge. Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers.

La Playita
La Playita (the little beach) is a long stretch of beach where you will often find locals fishing from the shore and families with children enjoying the beach-front playground. On the right end of La Playita you will find a roped-off swimming area just outside the beautiful Puerto Los Cabos 500 slip marina entrance. To the left is the natural open beach where you can swim, skim-board and enjoy a peaceful beach day away from the crowds. Follow the signs to La Playita/Puerto Los Cabos form Boulevard Mijares in downtown San José del Cabo (across from the fire department). You will find new and well maintained bathrooms, palapas and fishing charters. There are no food services directly on the beach, but there are several casual restaurants in the surrounding area.

Lover’s Beach
On the Pacific Cerritos
Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day on the beach or if you want to be active you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop. Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas - Todos Santos highway. Watch the markers as there is no sign. Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area. Lounge chairs, restrooms, food and drinks are available at The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant.

La Paz Balandra
A stunning bay that will take your breath away. The water level is shallow - you can walk back and forth in the bay and I think it only was about waist high - maybe more. The water is crystal clear with shades of blue turquoise. The sun glistens on the waters surface and make it twinkle. You won’t regret it visiting Playa Balandra! About 30 minutes from the boardwalk in La Paz. Simply follow the main drag along the boardwalk, then through Costa Baja Golf Course and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. Chef Manuel De Luca As executive chef, Manuel De Luca directs the majority of the Sheraton Hacienda del Mar’s culinary programs, including one of its Five Star Diamond Award-winning restaurants, De Cortez Mezquite Grill. In his gourmet creations he incorporates aspects of French, Japanese, Argentine and Mexican cuisine and is passionate about using the highest quality ingredients. Signature dishes include the Foie Gras served on sweet and spiced toast, accompanied by apple chutney and any of their excellent meat cuts grilled over Mezquite embers. Here is his favourite recipe!
Receta: Bizcocho Genovés de oliva y espárragos trufados
Recipe: Egg in olive oil genoise and truffled asparagus
Para la masa: - 320 gramos de harina - 8 Huevos - 400 mililitros de aceite de oliva - 200 gramos de azúcar - 50 gramos de polvo para hornear - 100 mililitros de leche - Una pizca de sal Mezclar los secos, luego agregar la leche, el aceite de oliva y los huevos. Colocar la mezcla en un molde y hornear durante 18 minutos a 180° Celcius. Una vez fría cortar y hacer un hueco de forma tal que nos quede una especie de taza. Reservar.
For the dough: - 320 grams flour - 8 Eggs - 400 millilitres olive oil - 200 grams sugar - 50 grams baking powder - 100 millilitres of milk - A pinch of salt Mix the dry ingredients, proceed to add the milk, olive oil and eggs. Place the mixture in a mold and bake for 18 minutes at 180° Celsius. Allow to cool and cut a hole in the center to simulate a cup. Set aside.
Para la ensalada: Limpiar espárragos, blanquearlos y cortar finamente. Preparar una ensalada con brotes de cilantro, mostaza, rúcula y betabel. Agregar perejil, eneldo y cebollin picado. Mezclar la ensalada con los espárragos y aderezar con aceite de trufas y unas gotas de vinagre de sidra. Sal y pimienta recién molida. Realizar un huevo poche o escalfado y reservar sobre un paño húmedo. Al momento de servir: Colocar la ensalada en el interior de la “taza” de masa de genoise. Colocar encima el huevo y decorar con un poco mas de ensalada. Rociar con un poco de aceite de trufa, pimienta de molinillo y servir. Opcional: agregar al plato unas gotas de reducción de vino tinto.

For the salad: Clean asparagus, bleach and finely chop. Prepare a salad with cilantro sprouts, mustard , arugula and beets. Add parsley, dill and chives. Mix salad with asparagus and drizzle with truffle oil and a few drops of cider vinegar. Add salt and freshly ground pepper. Prepare a poached egg and set aside on a damp cloth. To serve: Place the salad inside the genoise “cup.” Place the egg on top and garnish with a more salad. Drizzle with a little truffle oil, ground pepper and serve. Optional: add to plate a few drops of red wine reduction.

by yeye May the force be with you! Who does not love George Lucas’s epic Star Wars franchise, which has earned well over $5 billion in worldwide revenue from all six films. It is no secret that the film industry is one important ruler of our consciousness. A powerful pandora box that opens every time a story is enacted before mankind, the film industry is. Movies are to men, what stars are to the Universe, tales of time. Baja International Film Festival had its first edition last year, here in Los Cabos. Tributes applauding the great were given to Edward Norton, Melissa Leo, Diego Luna, Virginia Madsen, Matt Dillon, Nicholas Echevarría, and Michael Apted. Awarded as the best were Los Mejores Temas, NO, El Alcalde, La Revolución de los Alcatraces, First Position, Yuban Yasib, and Luminaris. It was a success. Those who place importance in fame and popularity had the opportunity to mingle with famous actors and filmmakers, well known musicians entertained the evenings, and the travellers visiting Los Cabos joined the celebration in delight, ate our food and tasted our spirits. The parties were fun and anybody that is somebody was present. Los Cabos natural glamour served as perfect scenography for the festival. A success, indeed, but one must agree that what makes this festival important is the real creative energy that unites to promote films that are risky, reflective and inspiring to the international audience. One year later, on November 13th, 2013 Baja International Film Festival presents their second edition. This year, everything is special, they completely renewed the program, and a new team experienced in film is behind the project. Independent film makers, with films that can travel and find an international audience, who are independently funded, are the invitee. The festival showcases Mexican, Canadian and American films and keeps in mind that the European industry is looking to pick up titles for their countries, the programmers and film directors from Europe who are coming are a key element for projects to be internationalized. In 2013 edition, no short films have been accepted, this year documentary and fiction compete against each other equally; though some might consider this controversial, this same rule applies in the Cannes Official selection. The reason? “We live in a time where documentary and fiction genres share many of their film tools. Documentaries are fictionalized, or vice-versa. It is not fair to keep separating them, they are allowed to compete against each other. “ - said Alonso Aguilar-Castillo, the festival director. Here, read it again: documentary and fiction compete against each other, equally. The BIFF 2013 edition offers activities directed to the industry with the intention to make available all the necessary elements to motivate dialogue, reflexion and
analysis between the film industry in Canada, Mexico and United States. BIFF 2013 brings together prominent members of the film industry from these three countries, to assist producers, directors, sales agents, distributors and active members of the film industry, in finding new and better opportunities for the development of their projects. Three discussion panels focused on the use of new technologies and presentations of successful cases in Digital Distribution, Television and New Platforms, and Case Study are presented. A Sales Agent Workshop is open. In Work in Progress Six Mexican films in post-production stage and needing support for their completion, are presented to accredited professionals in the BIFF’s industry area, i.e. producers, distributors, sales agents, service companies, support funds and representatives of national and international festivals. Additionally they compete for both the single cash prize awarded by the Baja International Film Festival, Los Cabos, as well as for the acquisition of rights award offered by Moviecity. Honoring one of the greatest filmmakers of Mexico, the Baja International Film Festival, Los Cabos, created the Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund to support seven Mexican feature film projects, fiction or documentary, at development and script stage, as well as two Mexican feature film projects, fiction or documentary in post-production stage. Through their digital video library, the industry participants may access and view the Festival’s Official Selection films on their computers and / or mobile devices. The Baja Film Festival chooses Los Cabos again because they believe it is a place you can’t afford to miss, part of a different reality; a fantastic world. A world where listening to the song of a humpback while watching it is not only imagination, or where diving in black coral reefs might be the day you live to end in style, dropping by the festival and enjoying a hand-picked film program. To help you enjoy your time in Baja, the festival organizers suggest tourist activities such as filming the Sea of Cortez, whose islands have been declared UNESCO World Heritage sites, exploring local flavours and pair them with Baja wines, going to a spa, visiting San Jose del Cabo’s Estuary, or going to Cabo Pulmo to visit the coral reefs. BIFF recommends the Frailes Beach, the Biosphere Reserve of Sierra de la Laguna and a road trip to the Miraflores towns. They invite you to not miss the San Francisco mountains a little further out, and also to visit the cave paintings made by early humans that populated the Americas where, if you stay until dusk, you might spot some eagles flying in the sky. Then their advice is to continue on to the oasis of San Ignacio, a Jesuit settlement, and discover its colonial architecture. In short, relax, you are here. Hyped this fall as, ‘’Cabo’s Most Glamorous Event’’, this year’s 8th annual Dressed to the K9’s Charity Fund Raising Event Festivities will take place Saturday, December 7, 2013, at the posh 10,000 square foot ocean front Villa Marcella Estate; nestled within the affluent grounds of Capella at Pedregal. The popular affair continues to benefit the animals and community served by the Los Cabos Humane Society, which does not receive any funding from the Government of Mexico, and is totally dependent on donated monies to keep their services available to Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. Everything from the decent shelter they provide to sick and lost animals, to their mobile spray and neuter clinics, pet food, shampoo, medical supplies, and dog and cat bedding, are all provided by money generated from this annual Dressed to the K9’s event. If people cannot attend the event, they are asked to please consider making a donation to their Animal Center or through their website, www.loscaboshumanesociety.com. The LGHS provides a pet adoption program and an educational component in local schools aimed at spreading awareness of the city’s pet and stray animal rescue efforts that requires such a fundraising event to keep this vital non-profit organization afloat and firing on all paws and pistons. This year’s Brazilian food and entertainment festival theme, presented by Tracy Dunlop of Lazy Gourmet Events, will feature executive chef Miguel Leon, Brian Solomon (Solomon’s Landing) and executive chef, Silviano Gerardo Orozco. Guests will sample and savor an amazing selection of South American delicacies from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., that include appetizers of Brazilian kibe of croquettes seasoned with cinnamon and mint, and served with lime and tahini dipping sauce. Shrimp marinated in coco milk and spicy Brazilian pri-pri sauce; grilled and served with mango dipping sauce. Brazilian empanadas, stuffed and baked with imported crab and tender hearts of palm, along with shots of creamy feijao preto soup served with fresh avocado. Appetizers will be followed by an impressive antipasto buffet of delicious imported artesanal cheeses and charcuterie meats, date fig compote, slow roasted tomato bruschetta and peperonata, to imported olives and spiced nuts. musical Stories By Marilyn Graham
Now that fall is here, we all meet again and share stories of our summer’s adventures. Musically, I had a wonderful summer that I will briefly share with you. It began for me with a trip to Colonial Mexico , starting in Guadalajara and traveling by bus to Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende and Queretaro. The colorful and lively city of Guanajuato was a hub of activities even in the summer, like dancing to orchestral music in the zócalo while sipping a cappuccino. Next, San Miguel de Allende, was in the middle of a Jazz Festival, so I had the opportunity to see some great shows in Teatro Peralta and listen to lots of fabulous jazz in a restaurant called Tio Luca’s. You might want to plan to visit this lovely colonial city for the International Jazz & Blues Festival. Last on my travels, but certainly not least, I stayed in Queretaro and was treated to wonderful music. First I began the evening with rock ‘n roll by Pila Seca in Teatro Alameda…lots of fun. My favorite music from my travels, however, was Sunday evening in Queretaro’s zócalo; simply marvelous! Talk about a beautiful Mexican tradition, Banda de Musica de Gobierno del Estado performed Tradicional Serenata Dominical, which included two sets of beautiful traditional Mexican music with a plaza packed full of graceful dancers and many onlookers. Boleros, one mambo, but mostly danzons, beautifully performed by the orchestra and thoroughly enjoyed by the huge crowd of locals and a few tourists like myself.
Next on my summer adventures, I happened to be in Seattle, WA where our very own local Cabo musicians Da line J ones and Diego R amirez were visiting while on their five week F reed om Tour in the US. Daline and Diego kicked off their tour, along with Joaquin Gonzalez, at the Jazz Corner in Hilton Head and sold out the club! Next the Duo continued to venues in Washington D.C., the Big Apple with three performances, then on to Southern California for more shows, Palm Springs, Seattle and ending in the Bay Area with a final performance at Silo’s in downtown Napa Valley. The show in Seattle was spectacular, as usual, and a highlight for me was hearing more original songs from their new CD, “Freedom”. It is an amazing work of art/music and if you haven’t heard their new songs, it’s a must to purchase. Lastly, I ended my summer with the tremendous good luck to be in the same city where K eith Jarret t, American pianist and composer, was performing his 30th Anniversary Concert with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette. Simply one of the most beautiful musical experiences of my life! As the Seattle Times critic, Paul de Barros, wrote better than I could ever put to words: “Tuesday night’s performance by Jarrett and his trio at Benaroya Hall surpassed anything I’ve heard in 40 years by this extraordinary pianist…the notes seem to fall like crystals in a snow globe…sometimes probing intensely, or flying over the keys at top speed, a touch of tender melancholy music followed by some lively romps, simply exquisite, Jarrett’s playing had a clarity and lightness, the egolessness he famously strives for….nothing felt forced-there was little gospelish vamping-and he got in and out of his ideas quickly, as if to say, -Well, there it is. Hope you like it-.” And boy did Seattle like it (¡yo también!). Such a fabulous end to a wonderfully musical summer! We look forward to a new musical season.

Yes, what an interesting universe, such a mathematical use of anatomy. A sport in all the sense of the word. This does illustrate that what makes a course so great a challenge is a complex system, a finely tuned balance of risks and rewards that demands strategic planning of your golf shots. You must think ahead and not just hit the ball down the middle all of the time. The golfer is to be able to apply a precise equilibrium of skill, strength, and strategy. Golf course design must provide the opportunities for this to occur by producing a system of hazards and safe areas that can be managed by all golfers. “The Golden Bear”, regarded as the most accomplished professional golfer of all time winning a total of 18 career major championships, while producing 19 second place and 9 third place finishes in them, over a span of 25 years- is most proud that his performance in the 1978 Open (which was also his most emotional to date) the one he considers as the finest four days of tee-to-green golf he had ever produced, was won at St. Andrews, Nicklaus’ favourite place to play golf. Hence, it makes perfect sense why Los Cabos, Mexico is famous for its premier, award-winning golf courses and has become the number one golf destination in Mexico.

Keeping Loved Ones Alive On The Day Of The Dead

When a loved one dies the grief sets in. Thoughts of things we should have said, and things we wish we hadn’t, weigh heavy in our hearts and on our minds. In our pain, moments missed that we could have spent together visit us as frequently, as do moments shared that brought abundant joy. “Día de los Muertos,” or Day of the Dead, observed annually in Mexico on the 1st and 2nd day of November blends pre-Columbian traditions dedicated to the Aztec goddess Mictecacihuatl with the Catholic custom for honoring All Saints and All Souls days. Celebrated as a National holiday, banks and many businesses close to pay tribute to the deceased and to keep ancestral memories alive. On the first two days of November each year, families flock to cemeteries throughout Mexico bearing flowers, photos and favored foods of deceased friends and family members. Graves, tombs and tombstones are decorated with love, as elaborate picnics including favored foods of the dead are laid out. In some regions of Mexico parades take place in the streets, Mariachi music floats through the air and fireworks are ignited. Cemeteries come to life on the Día de los Muertos as children play among the graves and familial memories are recounted. On Día de los Muertos, elaborate altars are built in public places and private homes throughout the country. The commemorative altars are artistically hewn, crafted from native materials and precious keepsake articles, flowers, candles and in Baja California Sur, often a great deal of sand. The traditional Pan de Muertos or “Bread of the Dead” is baked and eaten during this celebration and can be found adorning altars and grave sites. In Los Cabos, the Municipal Palace in San José del Cabo’s historic downtown area places an altar on display, as do many of the art galleries and restaurants in the region. In Cabo San Lucas families build altars in Plaza Amelia Wilkes. At local schools children bring gifts such as food and photos for constructing altars. At the end of the day, parents visit classrooms to view their children’s handiwork. Every culture has it’s own traditions for handling sorrow over loved ones lost. Some mourn in silence and behind closed doors. For some death is a subject that is not discussed in public. Mexico’s Day of the Dead is a two-day celebration of the lives that came before us as a means for holding the family close and for keeping traditions alive. In this country, as in many others around the world, it is a means for showing love and respect. *

A SIMPLE PAN DE MUERTO RECIPE The Cempasúchil (pronounced sempa-soo-cheel) flower is traditionally used as a decoration in the Día de los Muertos festivities. Its warm and bright color brings to life the commemorative ofrendas (altars).
Pan de Muerto is a type of sweet roll traditionally baked during the weeks leading up to the Día de los Muertos. They are topped with pieces that resemble bones and a ball on top. It is said that the bones represent the lost one and the ball on top is a tear drop to represent sorrow bones are placed in a circle to portray the circle of life.
- 500 g flour - 100 g sugar - Pinch of salt - 12 g yeast - 2 tablespoons orange blossom water - 4 eggs - 100 g melted butter To decorate : - 150 g sugar - 60 g butter, melted PREPARATION:
1. - Stir the flour, sugar, salt and baking powder. Make a crown with that mixture and put the orange blossom water, eggs and melted butter in the centre. Integrate all the ingredients into a soft dough until it doesn’t stick to the surface where you are kneading . 2 . - Cut the dough into 8 portions of 100 g each. Make balls, place them on a greased baking sheet and reserve until doubled in size. 3 . - In the remaining dough portions 45 g separate to form the “bones” and place them on top of each piece in the traditional shape of a cross. Lastly, place a small ball on top. Let it sit for about 15 minutes. 4 . - Bake at 180˚ Celsius for 30 minutes. 5 . - Brush the baked bread with melted butter and sprinkle a generous amount of sugar over it.

Dinorah Domínguez’s art illuminates spaces with the passion of a revolutionary who delights in enlightening feelings and giving us all a beautiful alternative to avoid darkness. Honouring the essence of her art, we could say she is a romantic warrior that delights in giving others power.

In her own words, this artist abandons the daily ordinary activity and surrenders completely to the realm of feelings with the determination to let them flow within the art of illumination. First she follows the form, once in the light, she feels the feeling that will illuminate the experience. Her believe everything has light in it, she gave life to her art in 1994, proposing that all that is needed is to search it and light it, in the same way we need to light feelings and experiences. From a recollection of objects in antiquity markets she exhibit for the first time “Luces del Pasado”. Exhibit that started a series of art shows in Art Galleries in Mexico City and Guadalajara, a journey that would last until 2002, when she entered a period of crisis as a creative of light and stop producing, changing her focus towards the Movie and TV industries, where she learns to appreciate the harmony of form and space. It was Los Cabos, the town that saw her renaissance in 2008, when inspired by the same needs Dinorah collected recycled death nature from the region and combined it with unused objects. Today, it has been 5 years, since Dinorah Dominguez art is exhibit at Casa Dhalia, in San José del Cabo Art District. It is my opinion that to the art lover, experiencing Dinorah Dominguez’s art is like awaking in a dream of light. What is light? - she whispers - It is the moment when you can see where you are, where you are going, and where you come from. *

Tarahumara Indian girls The Tarahumara Indians are a proud, private and quiet people who inhabit the Copper Canyon in Northwestern Mexico. Tarahumaras or Raramuri as they call themselves are Mexico’s second largest Indian group numbering between 50 and 70 thousand. They are known as expert hunters , farmers and runners, Raramuri has been translated to mean runners in their native tongue. They live in caves under overhanging cliffs and in simple wood and stone cabins in the remote canyons of the Sierra Tarahumara, still largely unaffected by modern technologies . By the time I photographed these young girls they had seen me repeatedly for several days and I had bought many of their baskets and some jewellery. They were friendly and open with me and agreed to let me take photos but would NO WAY look into the camera. They believe that the eyes are windows to the soul and that if I took pictures looking into their eyes I would be taking with me some part of there souls. I took a few pictures as well as many of their beautiful and well made baskets which are still, 15 years later, in use in my home today. Walking “Solvitur ambulando” St. Jerome It is solved by walking. Walking clears the mind and gives insight, calming us in the midst of change, and we are always changing. Walking also improves your posture, develops here and now awareness, increase sensory experiences, and can help decrease anxiety and depression by increasing the levels of those feel good endorphins. Walking calibrates your body’s physiological rhythms with the earth’s, which can help improve your sleep and sustain your health. True is that walking gives us life. In Indian cultures walking is a symbol of their search for meaning and guidance, for that matter, existentialism itself promises religious rapture to those who walk the journey. For most of us, a daily walk is an exercise on self alignment, the demands of most urban living like sitting in a chair for long periods or staying “hooked” to our favourite gadget, contradict the very nature of the body. The body’s natural design wants to walk. A morning walk by the beach, a hike in the desert, walking through our towns and cruising their Art walks and marinas, are charming and unique experiences that Los Cabos offers to the traveller. Before golf carts became the easiest way to get around the golf course, most golfers got around by walking. David Fay, former president of the USGA, has written, “We strongly believe that walking is the most enjoyable way to play golf and that the use of carts is detrimental to the game. This negative trend needs to be stopped now before it becomes accepted that riding in a cart is the way to play golf.”
For golfers, walking is a bit more than just a leisurely stroll by the beach. A study done at the Rose Center for Health and Sports Sciences in Denver, CO, concluded that walking nine holes on a hilly course is equivalent to a walk of 2.5 miles, compared to 0.5 miles when using a cart. And that a golfer who walks 36 holes a week is burning around 2,900 calories per week. “Studies have shown that those who burn 2,500 calories a week improve their overall health by lowering their risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer.” Golf conservatives assure that when walking the course, the golfer sees more: He or she takes in what lies ahead of them on the hole, has time to consider options and to think about club and shot selection. Adding to it, they remind us that walking a golf course is a good thing to do for the sake of the course itself - it saves wear-and-tear and damage to sensitive areas, which creates a better golfing environment. Henry David Thoreau used to say that an early-morning walk is a blessing for the whole day. Lao Tzu advised that meandering leads to perfection. Aldous Huxley’s father considered a walk among the mountains as the equivalent of churchgoing, and Friedrich Nietzsch believed that All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking. As you travel through Los Cabos remember Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Scott Mowrer when he wrote that There is nothing like walking to get the feel of a country. A fine landscape is like a piece of music; it must be taken at the right tempo. Even a bicycle goes too fast. *

Now, the teaching of Yoga. Yoga is to still the patterning of consciousness, its practice is the sustained effort to rest in that stillness. A true yogi cultivates discipline, self study, and awareness with the purpose to disarm the causes of suffering; The causes of suffering are not seeing things as they are, our sense of “I”, attachment, aversion, and clinging to life. How do you recognize a true yogi? Against popular misconception, a yogi is not he who is more flexible or stronger. In yoga, nobody cares if you can reach further or if you are able to touch the head to your knees. Yoga does not place importance in what you wear or in the colour of your mat. It is not about how you look, it is about how you feel. A Yogi’s actions, words, and thoughts are never harmful, his speech is noble and truthful, a yogi does not steal, has no sexual misconduct (any harmful action is misconduct), refrains from intoxicants, and a Yogi enjoys freedom from wanting because he understands that not being acquisitive unlocks the real purpose of existence. A yogi or yogini appreciates purity of mind and body; he neutralizes unwholesome thoughts by cultivating wholesome ones, and keeps the body clean with proper diet and cleanliness. The yogi knows these disciplines bring about clarity, happiness, concentration, mastery of the senses, and capacity for selfawareness. A yogi observes his posture, regulates his breath, and directs his concentration to a meditative absorption in order to integrate himself with the Universe. The postures of meditation should embody steadiness and ease. This is what the postures of yoga are, postures of meditation, developed by meditators to keep the body healthy and the mind clear for them to be able to stay longer hours in meditative stillness to see things as they are, with perfect equanimity; To see things as they are and not how I want them to be, I must keep a balanced mind, this means understanding the ultimate law of nature, that nothing is permanent, that we are always changing. That life is transient and all what matters is to become masters of our own mind, for all beings to be happy, and to prepare to receive death peacefully. Where to start? 1. Take a daily silent walk by the beach. 2. Observe your breath, moment by moment. 3. Listen. 3. Always modify your posture to honour how you feel. If you feel pain is a clear signal that you must change what you are doing. 4. Remember your intention. 5. Be your best self, truly. Find real peace, real harmony, real happiness.

Renting a car will let you enjoy the freedom of exploring the Los Cabos area without having to depend on taxis. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating to some, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there actually is some organization within the chaos. Gas stations - There are two types of gasoline: Magna or verde (green) which is regular and Premium or roja (red). Lleno means full. Tipping the attendant around $10.00 pesos (less than a dollar) is customary.
Money and Currency
Exchange rates - Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will most likely get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate of $12.00 pesos to $1.00 dollar. Cash or Card? - Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted but you often run into cash only places, especially at restaurants, so always carry cash or ask before.
ATMs - There are many ATMs all over Cabo. Some only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option of pesos or dollars in one. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing. Try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying more commissions. Commissions on the street ATMs are higher than going to a bank’s ATM.

AND AWAY WE GO...HIGH SEASON’S RETURN BRINGS OPTIMISM TO THE MARKET. In a resort town like Los Cabos, a constant flow of tourists feeds us new life and new business, but mostly on a seasonal basis. As the real estate community braces for the return of the season, hopes of increased business and sales is real amongst the real estate professionals in the area. With the housing market in the States continuing to show signs of rebound and strengthening, the trickle down effect has started to show in Los Cabos and buyers are out to scoop up the remaining great deals from the last few years. What the market usually expects and sees is an influx of inventory beginning in October/ November, when seller’s have decided to list their property in the peak viewing time to attract those buyers in the market. What is common is to see homes listed in the Fall and sales and pending sales increasing as the new year approaches. This trend continues usually through Spring time and as summer approaches, activity starts to slow. Another factor in our market gaining momentum is that there

has been some exciting news and publicity cast on our market. For starters, there is a bill proposed by the Mexican Government, that has already been approved by one of the legislative branches, that would allow foreigners to buy and hold title to real estate as Fee Simple - title in hand. As many know, the current instrument for foreigners buying real estate within 30 miles of the coastline is called the Fideicomiso. In short, the Fideicomiso is a trust that is backed by a financial institution and allows foreigners all the benefits of property ownership. However, with a potential switch over to Fee Simple, this will make the buying/selling process that much easier and the confidence in the buying public should react positively. With some new developments starting to push dirt around again and build, we as real estate agents and Realtors, all seem to agree that our market is on the rebound and exciting times are ahead of us. Our market is at the point where there are still some great deals to be had at all price ranges, yet some consistent sales numbers seem to show that we are a more healthy and steady market than in years past.*

Every so often, Cabo gets big international press exposure and this is another event that impressed viewers around the globe. House Hunters International is a 30 minute reality show that takes the viewer through the experience of buying or renting a home abroad. With mostly American contributors, the program shows both the joys and obstacles that can arise from a move to another country, directly from the perspective of real people. The viewers get a chance to see different parts of the world while being educated on the Real Estate conditions and pricing in the area. House Hunters International has been a big hit since its inception.
