LOS CABOS & South Baja by Michelle Monroy
Los Cabos (the capes) is in the southern most tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of three main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo and the East Cape. In between you will find smaller towns and points of interest such as Santiago and Miraflores which are located inland at the skirts of the Sierra de la Laguna or Migriño and Pescadero on the Pacific side, in between Cabo San Lucas and Todos Santos.
The Baja Sur Loop If you look at the Baja Sur map you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. There are ongoing road improvements and new highway constructions, so getting from one place to another will only get easier. The new highway from Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos is impressively well done, making it only a 45 minute drive. Cabo San Lucas Also just known as “Cabo,” is a tourist friendly town located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula that’s full of entertainment for every age and liking. You will find the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meeting at land’s end and the beautiful rock formations that create the famous Cabo arch. Cabo San Lucas has the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night. The Corridor A 40 Km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 25 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready to snap some photos of the beautiful beaches and make a roadside stop at the Cabo Real arroyo for a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut). San José del Cabo Walking around San José will be more of a traditional Mexican town experience than Cabo San Lucas. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district. From November through June the popular Art Walk takes place every Thursday evening where the galleries welcome guests sip some wine while they view their exhibits, however, the galleries are open year-roun. San José del Cabo’s historical downtown also offers world-class restaurants from Mexican gourmet cuisine to authentic Thai food. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride and explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species. East Cape People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. 60 miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight
4
fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving and turtle nesting on the beach. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and folks who just want to get away from it all. Todos Santos Located on the Pacific Ocean side, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the Pacific’s breezes. La Paz La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer. *

LOS CABOS 101 There is a variety of things to do in the Los Cabos area. Enjoy the water while snorkelling and fishing or stay dry and play a round of golf or take an ATV tour. Here is a guide to the main activities in San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.
SCUBA DIVING & SNORKELLING This is your chance to experience the underwater life in the Sea of Cortez, also known as the “Aquarium of the World.” Prepare yourself for nature to show off as you swim side by side with colourful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, sea turtles and more. There are a few ways to snorkel in Cabo: book one of the popular snorkel tours, drive to a beach and swim off the shore or charter your own private boat. Tours last around two or three hours and cost around $40.00 dollars per person. If you’re venturing out on your own, stay away from the Pacific side; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. See our map on page 11 and look for this symbol to find these spots. SNORKELLING SPOTS: Pelican Rock This rock attracts many fish and is just an easy five minute boat ride from the Cabo San Lucas Marina. Lover’s Beach Accessible only by water taxi. Be aware that this is a high boat traffic area and it’s not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Cove Santa Maria is a regular destination for snorkel tours. If you choose to drive there, it’s a very easy swim from the shore to the reef on the far right side of the cove. Chileno Bay This bay is also a common destination for snorkelling tours and has a safe roped off area for snorkellers. Cabo Pulmo Cabo Pulmo is a Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape that offers possibly the best snorkelling in the area. To get to this eight fingered coral reef you have take about a 2 hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it’s well worth it. SCUBA DIVING DESTINATIONS Note: travel time is from Cabo San Lucas marina Land’s End Intermediate-Advanced 50’-60’ and just 5 minutes by boat you’re swimming with sea lions and moray eels. Also a sunken boat can be seen in the Falls. Sand Falls Beginners - Advanced 30’-100’ Steep sand banks go down sharply into a canyon filled with tropical fish. A short boat ride from shore, the canyon runs from the depths of the Cabo San Lucas bay to within 30 feet off shore. Pelican Rock Beginners - 25’-80’ Just 5 minute boat trip to this large rock that attracts many tropical fish.
4
Neptune’s Finger Advanced - 80’-100’ Spectacular canyon wall dive. Cabeza de Ballena Beginners - 20’-40’ 25 minute boat ride to dive through large boulders with lots of fish. Santa María Cave Beginners - 20’-40’ - 35 minutes by boat, or dive from the beach. The entrance to Santa Maria canyon has a huge variety of fish who feed right from your hand. Chileno Beginners - 30’-70’ - 35 minute boat ride and a sandy and rocky bottom. PARKING Lots of turtles sited here, tropical fish, night dives. El Gavilán Intermediate/Advanced - 70’-100’ - 35 minutes boat time. Rocky ledge leading into a canyon where groupers and larger fish are often sited. Blow Hole Beginners/Advanced - 30’-70’ - 35 minutes boat ride from San Lucas, or just 10 minutes from Chileno beach. Rocky valleys present a variety of fish. Las Salinas Beginners - 30’-45’ - 1.4 hours by boat from San Lucas, or 1 hour by boat from La Playita. A sunken Japanese fishing boat attracts a large assortment of fish. Gordo Banks Advanced - 110’-120’ - 1 hour boat from La Playita, there is a seamount where you can see marlin, hammerheads, skip jacks and at times huge manta rays. Cabo Pulmo Beginner/Advanced - 30’-100’ - 1 hour drive East of San José on the paved road. 5 minutes by boat you’ll find the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez.

LOS CABOS 101
BOATING & FISHING Calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather...some would argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, the options to fit your needs are endless.
BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate you depending on what you need. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour around the arch, fishing for a couple of hours and a cruise to any of the beautiful bays for swimming. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the main difference between renting a yacht and a fishing boat is the cost.
Fishing Boat Rentals
You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers and pangas are more commonly used. Pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option, but cruisers will fit more people and will be more comfortable if the sea is rough on a windy day.
FISHING
There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue takes place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers an abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate. No matter what your level of fishing experience is, Cabo won’t disappoint you.
What to Expect It’s recommended to make a reservation at least one day before. Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or can be added at an additional cost. The earlier you leave the better; trips usually begin around 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. 15% to 20% of your charter cost is a customary tip for the crew.
Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait you can buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire can also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

SURFING, STAND UP PADDLING & KITE SURFING Cabo has been a popular surfing destination since the ‘50s, but with its rapid growth and the quick and daily flights coming in from California, it has now become a surfer’s paradise. See our map on page 11 and look for this symbol to locate the surf spots.

SURF SEASONS
June through November The summer months are known to be the best as the Southern Hemisphere’s swells send great waves to the Pacific, Cabo San Lucas, San José and the East Cape. December through February East Cape and Costa Azul are on the flatter side. The Pacific can be good this time of year because it’s exposed to the west swell. March through May This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.
STAND UP PADDLING
There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just your paddle and your board. Stand up paddling is growing to be more popular each year and is available all around Los Cabos. It’s a great way to see marine life, get a great workout in and enjoy nature. In Médano beach you can rent boards in several locations and paddle along the rocks of Land’s End to make your way to Lover’s Beach and The Arch. Companies like Cabo SUP and SUP Mexico offer not only paddling lessons but also a fantastic yoga class on the board while floating in the water. Tips! • Your feet should be parallel, about hip-width distance apart, centred between the board rails (edges). • Keep toes pointed forward, knees bent and your back straight. • Balance with your hips and core. Keep your arms straight and twist from your torso as you paddle. Think of using your torso to paddle rather than your arms. You have more strength in those abdominal muscles than in your arms. • Your gaze should be level at the horizon. Avoid staring at your feet. • If you’re paddling on the right, your right hand is lower and on the paddle shaft. Your top left hand is on the top of the grip. The elbow (angle) of the paddle faces away from you. • Plant the paddle by pushing the blade all the way under the surface, pull it back to your ankle, then out of the water. To go in a reasonably straight line, paddle about 4 or 5 strokes on one side, then switch to the other. When you switch sides, you’ll reverse hand positions. • When you fall aim yourself to the side, so that you fall into the water and not onto the board. Falling onto the board can cause an injury.
KITE SURFING
This sport is popular mainly in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (northeast side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kiteboarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Look for El Norte winds, a thermal wind building early in the morning and keeping up all day long.

LOS CABOS 101
Most people come to Los Cabos for a beach vacation and this area happens to have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. From floating in a turquoise bay with pink sand to riding some epic waves, each one offers something unique. Here is a list of the mustsee beaches to help you decide which one is your dream beach.
Cabo San Lucas Medano Beach
This is where the action is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2 mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and family friendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. All water sports and activities are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the spot to do it. Its stunning view of land’s end and the vast entertainment options makes it a must-see. In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. You can walk through the east side of the marina or access it via Avenida del Pescador street. Get prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, the only thing you can do is say “No Gracias.” Prices don’t vary too much from one water sports rental place to another; just talk to someone and break out those negotiation skills. Make a trip to Lover’s Beach while you’re there.
Location: Tips:
Lover’s Beach
Getting there is an adventure in itself due to the fact that it’s only reachable by boat or kayak. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Prices are around $15.00 per person. Ask your captain to cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves that you will instantly want to go explore. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll now find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so only swim on Lover’s Beach. Land’s End beside the famous arch. Only accessible by boat. There are a couple of vendors that offer beers and water but you won’t find any other services. A good idea is to spend the day at Medano Beach and take an hour or two to go to Lover’s Beach; this should be enough time to explore and enjoy this natural wonderland.
Location: Tips:
Along the Corridor
San Jose del Cabo
Las Viudas
Palmilla
Las Viudas (The Widows) beach is not visible from the road and is possibly the most private beach you will find on this list. What makes it unique are the rock formations that create small pools and coves where you can have a private and peaceful beach day. This beach is swimmable with caution, but if you find your own pool you can avoid the waves. Turn right at Km. 12.5 of the corridor and follow the dirt road down to the beach. There is a sign that reads “Las Viudas” but keep your eyes peeled because the entrance sneaks up on you. You won’t find any services or vendors so bring all your beach essentials with you.
Location: Tips:
Santa Maria A stunning horseshoe cove with coral coloured sand and an abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family friendly beach is relatively secluded, therefore you rarely run into beach vendors. Follow the sign that reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. No services and hardly any shade. You can rent umbrellas on the beach, but if you happen to have one bring it anyway. Bring snorkelling gear!
Palmilla is known for its family friendly calm waters and mile long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Take the Palmilla ramp exit at Km. 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa or bring your own umbrella. No services available.
Location: Tips:
Costa Azul If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot that doesn’t require driving out of town... this is it. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where Cabo Surf Hotel and Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and SUP boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer and in the winter it’s a good spot for snorkelling and swimming.
The amazing Whale watching at The Islands of Loreto, Mexico
Location: Tips:
Chileno
A very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newly installed palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs for excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. This is the only beach with public rest rooms and it has plenty of palapas for shade. Follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. If you visit Chileno on a weekend make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and if you beat the crowds you’ll be guaranteed a palapa for that much needed shade. Bring Snorkelling gear!

Tips:
La Playita
La Playita (the little beach) is a long stretch of beach where you will often find locals fishing from the shore and families with children enjoying the beach-front playground. On the right end of La Playita you will find a ropedoff swimming area just outside the beautiful Puerto Los Cabos 500 slip marina entrance. To the left is the natural open beach where you can swim, skim-board and enjoy a peaceful beach day away from the crowds. Follow the signs to La Playita/ Puerto Los Cabos form Boulevard Mijares in downtown San José del Cabo (across from the fire department). You will find new and well maintained bathrooms, palapas and fishing charters. There are no food services directly on the beach, but there are several casual restaurants in the surrounding area.

A stunning bay that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waste high water that is crystal clear with shades of blue turquoise. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock” as well as other interesting rock formations. You won’t regret it visiting Playa Balandra! About 30 minutes from the boardwalk in La Paz. Simply follow the main drag along the boardwalk, then through Costa Baja Golf Course and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed. There are palapas, but not a lot. You can rent kayaks and snorkel gear.

A wildlife reserve where visitors may anchor, snorkel, scuba and camp. The panga ride usually includes a cruise around the island where it’s very common to see sea lions, seals and even sea otters. The only swimmable beach on the island has pristine white sand and shallow crystal clear turquoise water, which creates ideal snorkelling conditions. Coronado Island is the ideal place for an adventure or to simply immerse yourself in nature and relax. About 7 miles or 30 minutes (on boat) northeast of Loreto. To get to Coronado Island you must take a boat or a panga. You will find pangas in Loreto’s Marina that you can hire to take you. The best option is to ask your concierge to arrange this for you. There are no services or restaurants on the beach. There are several large palapas with tables and benches and also an eco-restroom. Bring hiking shoes if you plan to explore the area. Bring Snorkelling gear!

Useful Tips Driving Renting a car will let you enjoy the freedom of exploring the Los Cabos area without having to depend on taxis. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating to some, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there actually is some organization within the chaos. Here are some tips if you’re behind the wheel: Gas stations - There are two types of gasoline: Magna or verde (green) which is regular and Premium or roja (red). Lleno means full. Tipping the attendant around $10.00 pesos (less than a dollar) is customary.

Money and Currency
Exchange rates - Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will most likely get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate of $12.00 pesos to $1.00 dollar. Cash or Card? - Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted but you often run into cash only places, especially at restaurants, so always or ask before you order and carry cash. ATMs - There are many ATMs all over Cabo. Some only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option of pesos or dollars in one. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing. Try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying more commissions. Commissions on the street ATMs are higher than going to a bank’s ATM.

Live Music By Marilyn Graham
Local Favorites, Norma Sánchez & Howie Clifton of Sexto Sentido When I first came to Mexico, I thought I would have to leave my love of live music and jazz in Seattle, and that I would have to be satisfied with the recorded music I brought with me. (Bye Bye great jazz radio station KPLU of Seattle, except for boxes of recordings). Yet very early on my husband and I discovered a local couple, Howie and N orma , who formed the nucleus of Sex to Sentid o , a group who performed beautiful and eclectic music throughout the local community. And ever since that time Sexto Sentido, alias Norma, Howie and group, have continued to play music that has added to the quality of our lives in Los Cabos. They are a tight trio with a fun repertory of music and a local favourite of many! Norma Sánchez is the lead singer in Sexto Sentido (as well as percussionist) and together with husband Howie Clifton, they have given us the gift of live music long before the current wave of music hit Baja. They now perform a wide variety of Latin, Mexican, Brazilian and Cuban music along with jazz from the USA, music from the Caribbean and in general, salsa and fun dance music. Howie Clifton is the group leader, playing saxophones, keyboards and also singing backup vocals as well as arranging for the group. Norma Sánchez was born in Mexico City but moved as a young girl to Mazatlán and then Mexicali, where she graduated from preparatory school. Norma then returned to Mexico City to the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico (UNAM), where she received her degree in Psychology. She married, had children and also began an interesting career as a teacher, then a newsperson and finally as a musician. Howie Clifton, originally from New York, was the director of an eleven piece salsa band call “Son Ilimitado” (meaning unlimited music), when Norma met him in Morelia Michoacán, and they began to perform Latin jazz and salsa. The group Sexto Sentido - sixth sense - was born shortly after they met and before their move to San Miguel de Allende, then to Puerta Vallarta, and finally in 1994 to Los Cabos. Sexto Sentido began performing in Coral Baja’s Mama Mia’s Restaurant when they first arrived, and from there they spread their wings and have played in all the important music venues of Los Cabos. I interviewed Howie a long while ago about Sexto Sentido and found it interesting what he had to say about their group. “Sexto Sentido has congregated the musical techniques and cultural styles of diverse musicians with widely varying formations and personal histories to forge a common inspiration and a multifaceted performing energy. The long-term proposal of the group…is to cut across a wide array of music, rhythms, and performing techniques in our continent and thusly celebrate the intriguing energies and intentions of our popular cultures through music. Popular signifies the Latin use of música popular – meaning
16
simply: the musics of the people. Sexto Sentido is thoroughly engrossed in the authentic exposition and performance of new world musics and rhythms including el bolero, el son Cubano and cha cha cha, el merengue Dominicano, la plena Puertorriqueña, jazz and blues, Latin jazz fusions, la cumbia, ballenato, and salsa de Colombia, and samba, bossa nova and reggae from Brazil, along with Mexican huapangos and Latin jazz numbers specially arranged for this group.” Sexto Sentido has been through several lives since those early days. Many outstanding musicians have played along with Howie Clifton and Norma Sánchez. Julio de la Cruz of Cuba, Luciano Callado of Brazil, Pedro Pablo of Chili, Javier Oren of Texas, Sebastian Dimarco of Argentina, Sergio Hesting of Mexico, and Diego Ramírez of Mexico. Diego has played with Sexto Sentido previously and this year he is again performing with Sexto Sentido. You can find Howie, Norma and Diego playing every Saturday evening from 9 : 0 0 -12 : 0 0 at Ja zz Ta pa s , P l a z a P esc a dero in San J osé del Ca bo. Currently you can find Howie Clifton performing throughout Los Cabos. Monday he plays solo at D on Sanchez in San José del Cabo, Tuesdays he is part of a quartet playing at Cor a zón de A lc achofa Restaur ant in Cabo San Lucas, Thursdays he again plays solo at F lor a’s Farm, Fridays you can find him at Ruth’s Chris S te a k House in Cabo San Lucas with a quartet, and again Saturdays Sexto Sentido plays at Ja zz Ta pa s, Howie, Norma and Diego Ramírez on keyboard. Also very often you can find Sexto Sentido performing for the F ull M o on Concerts at 7 Se a s Restaur ant in Cabo Surf Hotel. Drop in one of these venues and you are sure to enjoy the music of local favorites, Howie, Norma and Sexto Sentido!

ECO Advent “Live simply that others may simply live.” - Mohandas K. Gandhi Protected Areas Conservation: The National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) requires that all visitors to federally protected lands and waters purchase a park pass. For visitors on group expeditions, you will receive a Conservation Passport for $25. This passport was created to raise funds for the continued protection of the shorelines, inlets, and beaches that make this area so extraordinary to visit. The passport allows you to visit Mexico’s Protected Areas as many times as you wish for an entire year. For visitors on day trips, the daily fee of $10 per person is required to enter federally protected areas.
The respected philosopher Plato, founder of the first institution of higher learning in the Western world, believed that “this world is indeed a living being endowed with a soul and intelligence...a single visible living entity containing all other living entities, which by their nature are all related.” Twenty four Centuries later, American author, conservationist and activist, Terry Tempest Williams, states in front of the Senate Subcommittee on Forest & Public Lands Management that “Wildness reminds us what it means to be human, what we are connected to rather than what we are separate from. To be whole. To be complete.” True is that when you find yourself before natural beauty, such as the beauty you see here, a sense of awe vibrates through your whole body and a realization happens. In a Baja moment all the possibilities of a natural lifestyle awaken in you a spirit of adventure, inviting you to experience activities such as kayaking, whale watching, eco-camping, sailing, or wildlife cruising, paddling or surfing, hiking or swimming, all which make Baja Sur a world’s favourite eco-adventure. Wonderful habitats such as Isla Espíritu Santo and Laguna San Ignacio give you the chance to connect with the natural world in unique ways. For a relaxing vacation, you can eco-camp and watch the whales, or paddle on a coastal kayaking expedition. Also, plenty of opportunities are available to participate in ongoing conservation research studies with local wildlife and marine biologists and naturalist. Baja connoisseurs such as our oldest and most environmentally responsible adventure travel expedition operator, Baja Expeditions, will make your eco travel worthwhile. For those who prefer to stay closer to town, the option to have a Cabo adventure team guide you, is a very good idea. High Tide Sea Expeditions is a passionate lover of adventure travel and eco-tourism, you can learn to surf, paddle, snorkel, visit beautiful secret beaches, hike our desert canyons, or take a guided tour through our Sacred Geometry Eco-park Wirikuta. For the more contemplative adventurers, you will want to visit places such as Rancho Carisuva, an eco-adventure company based in Playa Migriño just 8 miles north of Cabo San Lucas. Carisuva Ranch is a typical Baja Californian ranch with 43 horses, a fresh water well, farm animals like goats, chickens, friendly donkeys and cows as well and a traditionally built desert hut (Baja California Style), where you get to enjoy a sunset horseback riding, or a fun hiking burro, all through private trails that run along the desert lunges, virgin pacific beaches, and amazing ocean side cliffs. If your timing is in synch with planetary cycles, you and your kids could enjoy their full moon horse back adventure and listen to an astronomy lover talk about our constellations and the wonders of our Cosmos! Eco is short for ecology, the science of studying the earth, the environment. The prefix eco- means environment or habitat. Eco friendly refers to goods, services, processes or people deemed to do minimal harm to the environment. To allow the local families who care about our ecology to serve you is the most eco friendly way to experience any land you visit, but we understand also those who enjoy adventure as a more personal experience and choose to explore the territory without help. For you, the thermal Springs offer a great relaxing and therapeutic outdoor spa experience. El Chorro is a thermal hot spring near the small village of Agua Caliente. It is nestled in the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range, a biosphere set aside and protected by the Mexican government. Here, warm water bubbles up from beneath the ground as cool water drizzles down the sides of the mountains. Other springs are close by and you get to swim and hike. There is a 20 pesos entrance fee per person. Make sure to bring snacks, maps and water. Another nature’s hot tub adventure is at the Santa Rita Hot Spring, close to the small village of San Jorge. Drive to Agua Caliente and look for a sign directing you to the small village of San Jorge which is about 15 minutes north. After

you cross the Agua Caliente and San Jorge arroyos, proceed up a hill which takes you into the village of San Jorge. Continue on until you come to a left hand turn in the road which will take you to the Santa Rita Hot Spring located in Canyon San Jorge. A member of the local Ejido will take your entrance fee. A rock climb will take you to a small pool of warm water. The tranquil setting of the Santa Rita Hot Spring will give you a sense of retreat in nature bliss. Cascada Sol de Mayo is a beautiful Ecological Ranch . A family hiking experience that ends in a refreshing fresh water cascade rendezvous. They also have cabins where you can spend the night, a small eco zoo display and a rustic restaurant where to enjoy the local family cuisine where guests applaud the lobster tacos. This is a lovely place about 9 km outside of the charming small town of Santiago in the foothills of the Sierra Laguna. From Santiago to the entrance it’s a 20 minute drive on dirt roads. It’s a short hike to view the waterfall from high above. You can continue toward the right to other lakes and a much longer hike or take the steps in the boulders which allow you to hike down to the palms surrounding the base of the waterfall. May your Eco-adventure be full of joy, full of happiness, full of harmony.*
OUTDOOR ADVICE
Kayak Tour - Photo courtesy of High Tide Expeditions
1. For sun burns, my advice is good old aloe (sábila). Ask any local resident where you may find a sábila plant, which grow all over Baja. Cut a piece and apply the pulp right on your skin. This is very relieving and very effective in treating the sun burn. Just Magic! 2. If the waves look big and are crashing strong on the beach, walk far from the shoreline, especially if you are not a good swimmer. 3. If you are going to be doing something adventurous by yourself , make sure you tell somebody your plans. 4. For spider bites, some natural honey on the wound works great. If the reaction to the bite gets too inflamed or hurts too much go to a doctor or hospital. 5. For scorpion stings see a doctor, for rattle snakes go straight to a hospital, and for mosquito bites, just smile and maybe just feel good about feeding a little creature. I hope these tips are helpful and wish you a safe and unforgettable Baja vacation.

LIVE Simply To be sophisticated has always been one of the most popular wishes. It is in the definition of the concept of sophistication where genuine simplicity arises as the most elemental quality of true luxury. Adorning the self has played a key role in the evolution of culture, and civilization after civilization has given meaning to our acquisitive craving for material things, as the main characteristic to define who we are. Still, it is natural beauty what keeps transcending as the extraordinaire, and those who understand with clarity that less is more are the ones who keep influencing entire eras and who are remembered in time as the greatest leaders of humanity. Albert Einstein used to say about simplicity that “If you can’t explain it to a six year old, you don’t understand it yourself.” He also said that to him “possessions, outward success, publicity, luxury - have always been contemptible.” He believed that “a simple and unassuming manner of life is best for everyone, best for both the body and the mind.” One of the world’s greatest novelists, Count Leo Tolstoy, said “there is no greatness where there is not simplicity, goodness, and truth;” and leading transcendentalist writer Henry David Thoreau, when discussing that our life is frittered away by detail, advised “simplify, simplify.” One of the most admired minds in history, Leonardo Da Vinci, was convinced that “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication,” and master Lao Tzu’s teachings include to embrace simplicity and have few desires. The East Cape in Baja Sur presents an almost virgin territory where options to live close to nature and away from the consumer demanding buzz give you the opportunity to reflect about what simplicity really is. Communities such as Laguna Hills, Zacatitos, or Cabo Pulmo are perfect examples of how sustainability principles can be applied to real live and make of simple living a life of comfort, honouring nature as the muse of inspiration for a peaceful lifestyle full of adventure. Jesus, Buddha, Mahoma, Socrates, Babaji, all admired for their greatness, accentuated the importance of a simple life in observation of the Self as one of the most successful tools to achieve real happiness. What is simple to others might not be what simple means to you, but we can all agree that what is simple to you is what really matters, if you are to lead the world towards greatness. Live simply.*
Yoga ~ Sun Salutation Sunshine in Los Cabos is a given. Here, almost every day of the year, at least 350, are expected to have the most shinny rays of our Solar System. The sun is to us the energy of life, our planet Earth rotates around it. Sri Yukteswar Giri, student of Lahiri Mahasaya and teacher of Paramahansa Yogananda (the latter brought yoga to the West) teaches us that “we learn from Oriental astronomy that the sun, with its planets and their moons take some star for its dual and revolves round it in about 24,000 years of our earth- a celestial phenomenon which causes the backward movement of the equinoctial points around the zodiac. The sun also has another motion by which it revolves round a grand center called Vishnunabhi, which is the seat of the creative power, Brahma, the universal magnetism. Brahma regulates dharma, the mental virtue of the internal world. When the sun in its revolution round its dual comes to the place nearest to this grand center, the seat of Brahma (an event which takes place when the Autumnal Equinox comes to the first point of Aries), dharma, the mental virtue, becomes so much developed that man can easily comprehend all, even the mysteries of Spirit. After 12,000 years, when the sun goes to the place in its orbit which is farthest from Brahma, the grand center (an event which takes place when the Autumnal Equinox is on the first point of Libra), dharma, the mental virtue, comes to such a reduced state that man cannot grasp anything beyond the gross material creation. Again, in the same manner, when the sun in its course of revolution begins to advance toward the place nearest to the grand center, dharma, the mental virtue, begins to develop; this growth is gradually completed in another 12,000 years. Each of these periods of 12,000 years brings a complete change, both externally in the material world, and internally in the intellectual or electric world, and is called one of the Daiva Yugas or Electric Couple. Thus, in a period of 24,000 years, the sun completes the revolution around its dual and finishes one electric cycle consisting of 12,000 years in an ascending arc and 12,000 years in a descending arc. Development of dharma, the mental virtue, is but gradual and is divided into four different stages in a period of 12,000 years. Kali Yuga: The human intellect cannot comprehend anything beyond the gross material of this ever-changing creation, the external world. Dwapara Yuga: The human intellect can then comprehend the fine matters or electricities and their attributes which are the creating principles of the external world. Treta Yuga: The human intellect becomes able to comprehend the divine magnetism, the source of all electrical forces on which the creation depends for its existence. Satya Yuga: The human intellect can comprehend all, even God the Spirit beyond this visible world.” We are in 314 Dwapara (A.D. 2014), the next Treta Yuga will start in A.D. 4099. Whether you do Surya Namaskara as your Beach Asana, or simply like to meditate at sunrise and sunset, a salutation to the sun is a yogi’s way of honouring the most adventurous human journey...Life.*

HEALTHY LIVING
Beauty ~ Inner glow
Organic ~ Coffee
Meditation is the practice of beautiful. It keeps you young, peaceful, healthy and develops in you a sense of harmony that only a reflection of the Universe in each of us can bring. The several techniques used for meditation are all great tools to calm the mind and clear it from agitation, some use mantra, some use visualization, some use prayer, some use imagination, some use music and dance, some use a nice walk, and they all work to some benefit. It is Vipassana meditation, the technique taught by the Buddha, the one technique that works at the root level of the mind, not only calming the mind but also purifying it from negativity, allowing the meditator to free himself from ignorance, craving and aversion, the causes of human suffering. It is true that stress and negative feelings and thoughts can make our actions and our words harmful. Vipassana meditation observes the breath and body sensations to free the mind from negativity, it is not sectarian since the breath is universal; its practice is not a religious practice but an exercise of the mind. It works on everyone because the defilements that affect us are the same for everyone: it is not Christian anger, or Buddhist anger, or Muslim anger, or Catholic anger; Anger is anger and it affects us all in the same harmful ways, no religion involved. When we focus our mind to observe our breath to purify the mind at the root level, we see things as they are, and they are impermanent. When we understand clearly that everything is always changing, and we observe it without attaching or rejecting the moment we are in, we give ourselves the opportunity to feel real happiness, real peace, real harmony. Through the practice of meditation, we develop an inner glow, we harmonize and empower the magnetism in us that attracts all that we think. It is simple, when we feel happy, we are beautiful. This is true not because I say so, or the great teachers have said so, but because you experience it yourself.*
Mexico is a coffee growing country, in fact is one of the largest coffee-producing countries in the world, and the largest producer of organic coffee, close to half a million small farmers and their families rely on the crop for their economic survival. The model and success of Mexican Coffee co-operatives and civic organization has laid the groundwork for some of the most compelling social movements in the world. Almost the whole world has tasted organic fair trade coffee from Chiapas, Oaxaca or Veracruz.

Spa ~ Mexican Papaya Papaya is wonderful. Did you know that Papaya is one of the healthiest fruits you can eat? Did you know that you can dry out papaya seeds and use them as a healthier, better tasting pepper? Papaya is also a great meat tenderizer. There is many health related issues why to consume papaya, but the one that makes papaya popular in spas around the world is its rich content in vitamins C and E and the papain and bromelain protein dissolving enzymes found naturally in it. Papaya gently exfoliate and helps smooth the skin, and it is a natural facial ingredient. Los Cabos is awarded around the world for its first class spa service. Most likely all spas will have papaya treatments available for you. Papaya is always found in Mexico, since Mexico is a papaya grower. Papaya originates from South Mexico and Mid-America.
Still, according to Kevin Knox, author of the book Coffee Basics, travelling around Mexico, you’re most likely to be served instant coffee. Next up the quality ladder is strong drip coffee often made from darkly-roasted beans not deemed fit for export. The dark roast disguises defects, and these coffees are often “finished” by dumping sugar into the roaster at the end of the roast cycle, resulting in an agreeable burnt caramel sweetness. Served with hot milk, this is much better than a typical American diner brew. Harder to find but well worth seeking out (and even more worth making at home) is café de olla, “coffee of the pot,” brewed with the raw brown sugar called piloncillo and laced with stick cinnamon. It is delicious and the best use of most Mexican coffee.
Los Cabos loves good organic coffee and you will find great beans at our
organic farmers’ market, or at Cuesta Rey Shop by Mega, but we are also proud to be home to great baristas who take pride in educating coffee drinkers, and promote the culture of coffee, by providing quality beans to our region. Such is the case of Hesed at Baja Beans, located on km 64 on highway 19- about 45 minutes north of downtown Cabo San Lucas. Hesed will tell you that a good cup of coffee is more than just the jolt of caffeine. There is a lot of culture and science to it, you can learn about the world and about a country through coffee. You can taste the history behind the finished product, from the moment the ground is prepared for the seed to, the growing, harvesting and processing of the beans, to the roasting and blending, and, finally, to the exquisite moment of extraction from a precise grind. The aroma of coffee is probably everyone’s best memory of friendship and family. When you meet Hesed, tell him Destino Magazine loves Baja Beans.*

ART & CULTURE
My Experience with
TRADITIONAL MEXICO
UNHU men and the ART OF STONE by yeye
“There is a widespread assumption today that art must necessarily be international.... But against this trend one finds isolated pockets of resistance, which suggest that good art can (and perhaps must) be a local affair – the product of a particular place and culture.” Roy Guthrie Rock lovers see in rocks what day dreamers see in the clouds, alive forms that mirror the consciousness of the observer. It takes an artist to shape its form in reflection of its inner beauty and transform a stone, which in itself is already a naturally perfect piece of art, into a transcendental signature art design. It takes a village. Stone sculpture is an ar t for which the African nation of Zimbabwe is well known around the world, and Shona Artists are recognized worldwide as the best stone sculptors. The Shona believe that there is an impersonal, omnipotent or principal Creator, called Muwari, Musikavanhu, or a Spirit which creates good and bad. They believe the God Ammon in its union with the earth produced water or Nommo and each succeeding generation of Nommo was a twin or double. Nommo gave everflowing water and thus life to the earth. A succession of Nommo were born and the eighth (Lebe) used water to form the vapor or breath from which speech comes, the man. The verb and water are also the basis of all spiritual and religious force. Perhaps their greatest value lies in the moral effect of both on the individual and on the group or society. Each plays its part, serving ultimately to produce a
good man, one whom the Shona says has Unhu—a man of good behaviour, respectful to others, pleasant and honest. The Shona art of stone is practiced using only hammer, chisel, rasp and finally, varying grades of wet and dry sandpaper. After carving the rough shape of their creation, the sculptor then uses a file to work the shape smoother. Once the piece is sanded to their satisfaction, they will then heat up the sculpture with either a wood fire or a propane blowtorch and apply a clear wax such as Beeswax or a floor polish. As the stone cools, it absorbs the wax through the surface, seals the stone and gives it a clear waterproof finish that brings out the natural colour of the stone. There is no artificial colouring used whatsoever. Once the stone has cooled, the sculptor uses a soft-cloth to buff it to bring out the shine. The ar tist’s spontaneit y and confidence in his skills are key elements in the creative process of a master piece. A high degree of integrit y, never copying and still working entirely by hand, unrestric ted by ex ternally-imposed ideas of what his “ar t” should be, a genuine Shona ar tist vows to the believe that ‘nothing which exists naturally is inanimate’, ever y thing has a spirit and life of its own. May all be blessed with Unhu.*

Mujer Coras This photo was taken in a tiny lost village in the mountains east of Tepic in the western state of Nayarit. The local population is made up of both Huichol and Coras and she was of the Coras peoples. I saw her outside her house and asked if I could take her picture. She didn’t answer that, but instead asked if I would like to drink some tea, I accepted her kind offer and we went into her small house where she had hot water ready, and then asked what I take with my tea. I told her I’d liked Honey -Miel de abejas- if she had some. Oh! She exclaimed, ran out and came back a minute later with a clay pot of dark honey with lots of honey comb and a few dead bees for good measure. I’ve seen this before so got a spoonful without bees and enjoyed the strong herb tea. Her small humble home was a workshop much like mine, and she told me she made and repaired clothes for the local people. I asked again If I could take her picture. Oh no, she said, it’s a mess in here, but then looked at me and asked me to tell her exactly why I wanted to photograph her. I looked her in the eye and said simply because I think you are beautiful. Ha! She exclaimed and threw back a hand in a gesture of dismissal, you should have come here 30 years ago! We had a laugh and she agreed I could take a picture outside near the door. When we finished I thanked her, gave her some money for having been my model , and took my leave. Across the street some local men greeted me and said, so we saw you photographed María. Yes, I said, she was very nice. One of them said, you should have seen her 30 years ago! Raweli Gallery Artist District 624-121-2651 | www.brucehermangallery.com

TODOS SANTOS MUSIC FESTIVAL The Todos Santos Music Festival, created, founded and still spearheaded by REM guitarist, Peter Buck, takes place this January, 2014 over a two week period; From January 16-18 and the following week, January 22-25. The Todos Santos Music Fest is celebrating its third year with added local charities that will benefit once again from some talented musicians coming together in this once tiny, soft whisper of a village. In 2006 the Government of Mexico designated Todos Santos as one of the country’s magical cities. Pueblo Magico is a distinction of utmost economic importance and one that has accelerated the town’s growth and recognition. This national honour has only been given to 30 cities in the Republic of Mexico. The Music Fest will once again take place in what is best known as a sub-tropical oasis overlooking the Pacific Ocean. A small city of cobblestone streets, colonial architecture and home to the famous Hotel California, which remains one of the two major hosts of the international mix of music. The Hotel California is undoubtedly, this coastal oasis’ most famous restaurant and bar, located a short 40 minute drive along the Pacific from Cabo San Lucas. Initially founded as a Mission in 1724, Todos Santos has undergone a radical change from its sugar cane producing origins; becoming a haven for artists, craftsman, travelers, surfers and musicians. The city’s warm climate and friendly hospitality are cause for the much welcomed Music Festival’s charity fundraising efforts that helped The Palapa Society last year with $70,000 US Dollars. The Palapa Society of Todos Santos was founded in 2003, and is a multicultural, non-profit Mexican Civil Association. The Society’s offices are home to the Todos Santos Bilingual Library, the Children’s Library and Reading Room; where after-school English programs and adult language classes are held. Other programs include English classes, swimming safety, college scholarships, and medical expense assistance. Peter Buck’s solo project is the main attraction again this year. Other bands that will perform include The Minus 5, The Dream Syndicate, Drivin’ N Cryin’, Mexico’s rising pop band, Torreblanca, Twin Tones, Sonida Gallo Negro, and Ed Kowalczyk, (Former lead singer of Live). “One of the things I like about Todos Santos is it’s a place where people like to do things. I just got an amazing vibe about the town. Every street I walk down, I like. I like the people, and being from Seattle, I like the weather. I don’t ever want to be cold again. I come down here to recharge. The beaches are great, I
swim. We love snorkeling. Anything that has to do with being out in the sun is nice. Sometimes it can be just to sit out by the pool and drink a beer,” said Peter Buck when discussing his passion for this once sleepy fishing village, adding that. “One of the things I’m trying to do with the Todos Santos Music Festival, as well as raise money for education, is to kind of bring together young Mexican bands, my friends who are generally a little bit older and maybe some young American bands, and try to introduce it so that the whole town can appreciate what’s going on.” Peter Buck and The Todos Santos Music Festival, have added seven new charities this year to their cause; starting with Hogar del Niño, Escuela Pacifica, Albergue Escolar, DIF Municipal, ProPlayas A.C., Amigos de los Animales de Todos Santos (Friends of the Animals of TS), and the local Todos Santos volunteer fire department. From education to fire rescue, all proceeds from the third annual music festival benefits these vital local charities. “It’s just a town I really like,’’ added Buck. ‘’Dirt roads, donkeys in the street; there’s one stoplight that I accidentally blow through every single time I hit it. But it’s got a cool art community; it’s got a good little scene. I got involved in the community, which is something I’ve tried to do since a teenager, and I want to play music there. So I kind figured out a way to do both.’’
By Fernando Rodriguez
the $40,000 bill it cost to hold the extravaganza was covered by Buck himself, while this years 2nd annual version will be underwritten by corporate sponsors of Mexico. “This event was so much fun last year. Good music, friends, great weather,” said Donna Mattson of Silverton, Oregon. “A great event. Last year’s shows were magic!’’ added Mike Brozda, a USC student from California, while Amelia Doyle also commented, “Probably the coolest event of 2013! I encourage everyone to take this chance to see the beauty of Todos Santos; listen to the great music of everyone involved, and get a chance to help out a charity that truly gives a damn and makes a difference.”
Hotel California Schedule January 16-17 - Peter Buck January 18 - The Minus 5 January 22 - Local Music Showcase January 23-24 - Ed Kowalczyk, Drivin’ N Cryin’, Dream Syndicate Town Plaza Schedule January 25 - Drivin’ N Cryin’, Dream Syndicate, Ed Kowalczyk, Twin Tones, Sonido Gallo Negro, Torreblanca
Admission to the Festival is free except for concerts happening at the Hotel California where tickets are priced at $15-$75 USD. A fee that includes a complimentary buffet, beer and margaritas. The only way to guarantee entrance at the Hotel California is to purchase VIP seats. Additional ticket information about this exciting event is available at: www.TodosSantosMusicFestival.com and info@hotelcaliforniabaja.com, or by calling the Hotel California: (011 52) 612-145-0525. “I want to keep it kind of loose and spontaneous and fun, not super professional,’’ said Buck. “When we played at the hotel, which is a smaller venue, it’s more like playing a high school dance, which I enjoy. And then there will be two bigger events--one at the town square--which will be a couple thousand people.” The famed REM musician owns a home in Todos Santos and launched the first Music Fest as a way for him to give back to a community which has endeared itself to him. MARKET UPDATE
By Blake Harrington/REmexico Real Estate
A NEW YEAR BRINGS NEW INVENTORY FOR BUYERS
IMAGINE you live here
by Michelle Geisler Anderson/Dream Homes of Cabo
Beyond the Bridge San José del Cabo’s bridge towards La Playita and Puer to los Cabos has become a “landmark ” when describing the sor t of wonder world that is developing large sec tions of San José East. The bridge connec ts the ar tistic downtown area of San José del Cabo to the adventures of fishing, sur f, of f-road, and world-class golf that continue to become unveiled. Development has remained progressive on the eastern side of Los Cabos’ Municipalit y.
In what seems to be just a blink of the eye, 2013 is behind us and now our fresh start to 2014 has begun! Just like any new start to a new year, there are some things we can all expect…Gym memberships will spike, resolutions will be short-lived, and for us in Cabo, new homes will come on the market. In our seasonal market here in Los Cabos, it is common that Listing Brokers suggest to their clients to bring their new listing active during our high season when the majority of the buyers are in town looking to purchase. Thus, January has brought new listings and new inventory to our market, which is very exciting for buyers. While most of the new inventory and new listings are re-sales, something we are seeing more of is that developers seem to be adjusting to the market and offering more of a variety products at different prices. For example, some of the exclusive private clubs and residential communities have now released new condos and townhomes at more attractive pricing, rather than just $2 Million dollar and up homes as they did in the past. This is great for our market because while many of our clients see the strong future in Los Cabos and Mexico, some wish to start more conservative and invest as the years go on. Being able to offer listings at all different pricing levels is a great service to the buyers we work with at our brokerage. When we first consult with an active buyer, we encourage them to dig into the market statistics and learn about our market and see at what level they feel comfortable investing. Educating our clients on the new inventory, developer offerings, and the different price ranges and amenities that come with them, allows our buyers to purchase with absolute confidence. Our team of agents are heavily involved in the community, attend all open houses and developer events, and are full time Realtors who monitor the movement and sales in our market on a daily basis. This type of commitment is what our clients expect from us, as they should. In 2014, our company and it’s partners and affiliates see a bright future in our market. We have nothing but confidence in “The Baja” and just as we encourage our clients, we are heavily invested in the area and have even opened an office in Loreto to account for the demand in the area. We are truly excited about what the future brings and proud to be a part of it. From all of us at REmexico Real Estate Group, Wishing you and yours a healthy and prosperous 2014!

Puerto Los Cabos Marina | Photo by Dwight Harrington The first notable experience crossing the bridge is the view over the San José Estuary. This natural preserve is a sunlit, palm tree oasis, alive with all types of wildlife watching, kayaking and trails. The bridge’s journey also lends views up along the green golf knolls and hillside peaks where an iron cross sculpture created by artist Gabriel Macotela, designates the helm of the Puerto Los Cabos Marina. The cross is a symbol that offers a welcoming to new and returning boaters and majestically lights the marina in the evening. Arriving to the other side, another monument of a fisherman stands tall establishing the entrance of Puerto Los Cabos. The monumental fisherman proudly raises his big catch of the day in representation of the village fishermen who live and work among the marina in the little town called La Playita. This authentic fishing village offers the freshest fish market at the entrance of the harbor. Pangas come in early to sell their catch mainly to local restaurants, private chefs and locals or visitors who can get there early. The experience here centers around marina views of gently rocking pangas and swaying yachts. Drive through this neighborhood’s dusty streets to experience the no-worries lifestyle and to create your story of the little fishing village. This neighborly resort carries on across the next 2000 acres with the development of Puerto Los Cabos’ luxury planned resort community of residences. The Marina development is a boutique destination filled with the pleasures of nature and Mexican sophistication. Today a Leonora Carrington art walk decorates the marina
sidewalk and acknowledges a selection of artists and their visuals pieces for admiring. It is a perfect place to take a stroll or bicycle ride and to capture your own photos of the developments happening in real estate. El Ganzo is the first boutique hotel resort accommodating visitors to the marina and golf resort. Other tourist activities and services are becoming available along the marina and already generate a day-to-night life for residents and tourists. Further along the road, and beyond the residential security gates, is the popularly referenced Puerto Los Cabos Golf Course. Testimonials about this course and its game are sighted on many golf pages as “a quality golf course,” “an enjoyable experience,” and “playable throughout the year.” The Puerto Los Cabos golf club has public play rates and offer private club memberships to owners. Development of a second course will complete Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus’ composite collaboration, at which time homeowners will enjoy more private club amenities. Looking closely, this residential community of custom homes and lots has grown quickly and has substantially added to the overall growth of San José East. While home sites in this area are constructing, development parcels are being planned. Already established hotel developers, like Secrets and the JW Marriot, have invested in the Puerto Los Cabos Marina and Resort to be the first to meet the demands for hotel rooms, spas and other amenities welcomed in this seemingly fast developing neighborhood. If you do not know the East Cape; well, this is just where the opportunities begin.

design challenges an expert help with anything about living here By Wendy Rains Architectural/Interior Designer Editor of Building In Baja Magazine
When I moved to Baja 12 years ago. Things were done so differently. As third generation in my field, in addition to all the years of construction behind me, nothing prepared me for building my first two homes at the same time. The biggest lesson was not to take even the most basic thing for granted as one would in the US or Canada. Some people prefer to be part of each and every micro decision, while others are completely comfortable turning everything over to someone they trust to stick to the budget, pay the bills, confident they can just show up when it’s finished. So where is a designer’s value? If so much of what we’ve been used to doing is no longer expected of us, why hire us? Answer: Designers turn dreams into realities. We have the wherewithal to avoid mistakes and save our clients money. We see it all through from top to bottom, paying attention to every little detail, from building materials and finishes, down to the soaps placed in the bathrooms.
BAJA Design TIP
Whether designing a home or hotel, construction here still comes with unknown challenges even an experienced foreign designer couldn’t possibly imagine. We empower you to make smart decisions when building a home, a business, and a life here in Baja Don’t Assume Appliance Specs Are Accurate! Sometimes factory provided measurements of appliances such as dishwashers and trash compactors have varied once the item is on site and ready to install. One little millimeter off can cause a mountain of aggravation to make something fit…after the fact…especially if you are planning to use poured concrete countertops. Pulido finished concrete can be beautiful and is so often used for countertops and appliance sidewalls. So, when purchasing appliances that are not in stock or deliverable immediately, it is critical for your contractor to have that item on site prior to pouring. Have a design dilemma or question about living the good life in Baja? Ask Wendy@buildinginbaja.com Wendy Rains is an Internationally noted Architectural Designer. She currently makes her home in Todos Santos and has published the magazine, Building In Baja, and was Editor of Baja Tips Weekly. She hosts the radio program TS Weekend With Wendy on Cabo Miil fm 96.3 every Saturday at 3pm.
