LOS CABOS & South Baja Los Cabos (the capes) is in the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of three main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo and the East Cape. In between you will find smaller towns and points of interest such as Santiago and Miraflores which are located inland at the skirts of the Sierra de la Laguna or Migriño and Pescadero on the Pacific side, in between Cabo San Lucas and Todos Santos.

The Baja Sur Loop If you look at the Baja Sur map you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. There are ongoing road improvements and new highway constructions, so getting from one place to another will only get easier. The new highway from Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos is impressively well done, making it only a 45 minute drive.

Cabo San Lucas Also just known as “Cabo,” is a tourist friendly town located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula that’s full of entertainment for every age and liking.

You will find the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meeting at Land’s End and the beautiful rock formations that create the famous Cabo arch. Cabo San Lucas has the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

The Corridor A 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 25 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready to snap some photos of the beautiful beaches and make a roadside stop at the Cabo Real arroyo for a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

San José del Cabo Walking around San José will be more of a traditional Mexican town experience than Cabo San Lucas. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district.

From November through June the popular Art Walk takes place every Thursday evening where the galleries welcome guests sip some wine while they view their exhibits, however, the galleries are open year-round. San José del Cabo’s historical downtown also offers world-class restaurants from Mexican gourmet cuisine to authentic Thai food. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride and explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

East Cape People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight

fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving and turtle nesting on the beach. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and folks who just want to get away from it all.

Todos Santos Located on the Pacific Ocean side, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the Pacific’s breezes.

La Paz La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer. *

LOS CABOS 101 There is a variety of things to do in the Los Cabos area. Enjoy the water while snorkelling and fishing or stay dry and play a round of golf or take an ATV tour. Here is a guide to the main activities in San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.

SCUBA DIVING & SNORKELLING This is your chance to experience the underwater life in the Sea of Cortez, also known as the “Aquarium of the World.” Prepare yourself for nature to show off as you swim side by side with colourful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, sea turtles and more.

There are a few ways to snorkel in Cabo: book one of the popular snorkel tours, drive to a beach and swim off the shore or charter your own private boat. Tours last around two or three hours and cost around $40.00 dollars per person. If you’re venturing out on your own, stay away from the Pacific side; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports.

SNORKELLING: Pelican Rock This rock attracts many fish and is just an easy five minute boat ride from the Cabo San Lucas Marina. You can take a water taxi from the marina or from Medano beach.

Lover’s Beach Accessible only by water taxi. Be aware that this is a high boat traffic area and it’s not roped off for swimmers.

Santa Maria Bay Santa Maria is a regular destination for snorkel tours. If you choose to drive there, it’s a very easy swim from the shore to the reef on the far right side of the cove.

Chileno Bay This bay is also a common destination for snorkelling tours and has a safe roped off area for snorkellers.

Cabo Pulmo Cabo Pulmo is a Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape that offers possibly the best snorkelling in the area. To get to this eight fingered coral reef you have take about a 2 hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it’s well worth it.

SCUBA DIVING DESTINATIONS Note: travel time is from Cabo San Lucas marina Land’s End Intermediate-Advanced 50’-60’ and just 5 minutes by boat you’re swimming with sea lions and moray eels. Also a sunken boat can be seen in the Falls.

Sand Falls Beginners - Advanced 30’-100’ Steep sand banks go down sharply into a canyon filled with tropical fish. A short boat ride from shore, the canyon runs from the depths of the Cabo San Lucas bay to within 30 feet off shore.

Pelican Rock Beginners - 25’-80’ Just 5 minute boat trip to this large rock that attracts many tropical fish.

Neptune’s Finger Advanced - 80’-100’ Spectacular canyon wall dive.

Cabeza de Ballena Beginners - 20’-40’ 25 minute boat ride to dive through large boulders with lots of fish.

Santa María Cave Beginners - 20’-40’ - 35 minutes by boat, or dive from the beach. The entrance to Santa Maria canyon has a huge variety of fish which feed right from your hand.

Chileno Beginners - 30’-70’ - 35 minute boat ride and a sandy and rocky bottom. PARKING Lots of turtles sighted here, tropical fish, night dives.

El Gavilán Intermediate/Advanced - 70’-100’ - 35 minutes by boat. Rocky ledge leading into a canyon where groupers and larger fish are often sitghed.

Blow Hole Beginners/Advanced - 30’-70’ - 35 minute boat ride from San Lucas, or just 10 minutes from Chileno beach. Rocky valleys present a variety of fish.

Las Salinas Beginners - 30’-45’ - 1.4 hours by boat from San Lucas, or 1 hour by boat from La Playita. A sunken Japanese fishing boat attracts a large assortment of fish.

Gordo Banks Advanced - 110’-120’ - 1 hour boat from La Playita, there is a seamount where you can see marlin, hammerheads, skip jacks and at times huge manta rays.

Cabo Pulmo Beginner/Advanced - 30’-100’ - 1 hour drive East of San José on the paved road.

5 minutes by boat you’ll find the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez.

BOATING & FISHING Calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather...some would argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, the options to fit your needs are endless.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate you depending on what you need. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour around the arch, fishing for a couple of hours and a cruise to any of the beautiful bays for swimming. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the main difference between renting a yacht and a fishing boat is the cost.

Fishing Boat Rentals

You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers and pangas are more commonly used.

Pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option, but cruisers will fit more people and will be more comfortable if the sea is rough on a windy day.

FISHING

There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate. No matter what your level of fishing experience is, Cabo won’t disappoint you.

What to Expect It’s recommended to make a reservation at least one day before. Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or can be added at an additional cost. The earlier you leave the better; trips usually begin around 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. 15% to 20% of your charter cost is a customary tip for the crew.

Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait you can buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire can also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

GOLFING With the desert meeting the Sea of Cortez as a backdrop, there is no doubt why Los Cabos has become a championship golf destination over the years. From Nicklaus to Fazio, many of the big names in golf have designed courses in this unique landscape.

There are private courses such as Diamante, Querencia and El Dorado, where you have to be invited to play. For Public courses green fees vary based on the membership status of the golfer, time of day, season and other factors. Many courses also offer a reduced rate later in the day during twilight hours.

Appropriate golf attire is required on all courses and club rental prices range from $35 to $ 65.

Cabo San Lucas Country Club This course was designed by Roy Dye and is conveniently located outside of Cabo San Lucas and is the only one with views of Land’s End. It has more than 80 bunkers and slightly inclined fairways and one of the longest holes in all of Mexico at 610 yards. 18 holes, 7,220 yards, par 72.

June through November The summer months are known to be the best as the Southern Hemisphere’s swells send great waves to the Pacific, Cabo San Lucas, San José and the East Cape.

December through February East Cape and Costa Azul are on the flatter side. The Pacific can be good this time of year because it’s exposed to the west swell.

March through May This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

STAND UP PADDLING

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just your paddle and your board. Stand up paddling is growing to be more popular each year and is available all around Los Cabos. It’s a great way to see marine life, get a great workout in and enjoy nature. In Médano beach you can rent boards in several locations and paddle along the rocks of Land’s End to make your way to Lover’s Beach and The Arch. Companies like Cabo SUP and SUP Mexico offer not only paddling lessons but also a fantastic yoga class on the board while floating in the water.

Tips!

• Your feet should be parallel, about hip-width distance apart, centred between the board rails (edges).

• Keep toes pointed forward, knees bent and your back straight.

• Balance with your hips and core. Keep your arms straight and twist from your torso as you paddle. Think of using your torso to paddle rather than your arms. You have more strength in those abdominal muscles than in your arms.

• Your gaze should be level at the horizon. Avoid staring at your feet.

• If you’re paddling on the right, your right hand is lower and on the paddle shaft.

Your top left hand is on the top of the grip. The elbow (angle) of the paddle faces away from you.

• Plant the paddle by pushing the blade all the way under the surface, pull it back to your ankle, then out of the water. To go in a reasonably straight line, paddle about 4 or 5 strokes on one side, then switch to the other. When you switch sides, you’ll reverse hand positions.

• When you fall aim yourself to the side, so that you fall into the water and not onto the board. Falling onto the board can cause an injury.

KITE SURFING

This sport is popular mainly in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (northeast side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kiteboarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than La Ventana, but the surf is bigger.

You won’t find any services or vendors so bring all your beach essentials with you.

Santa Maria A stunning horseshoe cove with coral coloured sand and an abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family friendly beach is relatively secluded, therefore you rarely run into beach vendors.

Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign that reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area.

No services and hardly any shade. You can rent umbrellas on the beach, but if you happen to have one bring it anyway. Bring snorkelling gear!

Location:

Imagine floating in a turquoise bay with pink sand or riding some epic waves, each beach offers something unique. Here is a list of the must-see beaches to help you decide which one is your dream beach.

Cabo San Lucas Medano Beach

This is where the action is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2 mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and family friendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. All water sports and activities are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the spot to do it. Its stunning view of land’s end and the vast entertainment options makes it a must-see.

In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. You can walk through the east side of the marina or access it via Avenida del Pescador street.

Get prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors.

If you’re not there for the shopping, the only thing you can do is say “No Gracias.” Prices don’t vary too much from one water sports rental place to another. Make a trip to Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

Lover’s Beach

Getting there is an adventure in itself due to the fact that it’s only reachable by boat or kayak. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Prices are around $15.00 per person. Ask your captain to cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll now find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach.

This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so only swim on Lover’s Beach.

There are a couple of vendors that offer beers and water but you won’t find any other services. A good idea is to spend the day at Medano Beach and take an hour or two to go to Lover’s Beach; this should be enough time to explore and enjoy this natural wonderland.

Along the Corridor Las Viudas

Las Viudas (The Widows) beach is not visible from the road and is possibly the most private beach you will find on this list. What makes it unique are the rock formations that create small pools and coves where you can have a private and peaceful beach day. This beach is swimmable with caution, but if you find your own pool you can avoid the waves.

Chileno

A very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newly installed palapas.

You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs for excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. This is the only beach with public rest rooms and it has plenty of palapas for shade.

Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway.

If you visit Chileno on a weekend make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and if you beat the crowds you’ll be guaranteed a palapa for that much needed shade. Bring Snorkelling gear!

San Jose del Cabo Palmilla

Palmilla is known for its family friendly calm waters and mile long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis.

Take the Palmilla ramp exit at Km. 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel.

Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa or bring your own umbrella. No services available.

Costa Azul If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot that doesn’t require driving out of town... this is it. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where Cabo Surf Hotel and Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and SUP boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer and in the winter it’s a good spot for snorkelling and swimming.

Exit at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge.

Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers.

La Playita

La Playita (the little beach) is a long stretch of beach where you will often find locals fishing from the shore and families with children enjoying the beach-front

playground. On the right end of La Playita you will find a roped-off swimming area just outside the beautiful Puerto Los Cabos 500 slip marina entrance. To the left is the natural open beach where you can swim, skim-board and enjoy a peaceful beach day away from the crowds.

Follow the signs to La Playita/Puerto Los Cabos form Boulevard Mijares in downtown San José del Cabo (across from the fire department).

You will find new and well maintained bathrooms, palapas and fishing charters. There are no food services directly on the beach, but there are several casual restaurants in the surrounding area.

On the Pacific Cerritos

Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day on the beach or if you want to be active you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop.

Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas - Todos Santos highway. Watch the markers as there is no sign.

Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area.

Lounge chairs, restrooms, food and drinks are available at The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant.

La Paz Balandra

A stunning bay that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist high water that is crystal clear with shades of blue turquoise. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock” as well as other interesting rock formations. You won’t regret it visiting Playa Balandra!

About 30 minutes from the boardwalk in La Paz. Simply follow the main drag along the boardwalk, then through Costa Baja Golf Course and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach.

No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed. There are palapas, but not a lot. You can rent kayaks and snorkel gear.

Loreto Isla Coronado

A wildlife reserve where visitors may anchor, snorkel, scuba and camp. The panga ride usually includes a cruise around the island where it’s very common to see sea lions, seals and even sea otters. The only swimmable beach on the island has pristine white sand and shallow crystal clear turquoise water, which creates ideal snorkelling conditions.

Coronado Island is the ideal place for an adventure or to simply immerse yourself in nature and relax.

About 7 miles or 30 minutes (on boat) northeast of Loreto.

To get to Coronado Island you must take a boat or a panga. You will find pangas in Loreto’s Marina that you can hire to take you. The best option is to ask your concierge to arrange this for you. There are no services or restaurants on the beach. There are several large palapas with tables and benches and also an eco-restroom. Bring hiking shoes if you plan to explore the area. Bring Snorkelling gear!

Useful Tips Driving Renting a car will let you enjoy the freedom of exploring the Los Cabos area without having to depend on taxis. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating to some, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there actually is some organization within the chaos.

There are two types of gasoline: Magna or verde (green) which is regular and Premium or roja (red). Lleno (pronounced yeno) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos (less than a dollar) is customary.

Money and Currency Exchange rates - Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will most likely get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate of $12.00 pesos to $1.00 dollar.

Cash or Card? - Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted but you often run into cash only places, especially at restaurants, so always or ask before you order and carry cash.

ATMs - There are many ATMs throughout the Los Cabos area. Some only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing.

Try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high commissions. Commissions on the street ATMs are higher than going to a bank.

Part of the esteemed designation of “Pueblo Magico” in the charming ocean village of Todos Santos is the large number of artists living there who have working studios throughout the town. Collectors and the public often marvel at gallery art, but they rarely have an opportunity to actually visit studios and talk directly with the artists in their working environment.

The fifth annual Todos Santos Studio Tour, is scheduled for Sunday February 9th, 2014, from 10am – 5pm. The Tour is self guided and after registering and paying an admission/donation of $150 pesos you will be given a studio map and an identification bracelet. An added bonus is the Tour also guides you through many of the hidden neighborhoods of our magical Pueblo.

Proceeds from the Tour are administered through the Palapa Society, A.C., a non-profit charity, and help children in Todos Santos with art education by providing art supplies and training. It promises to be a unique and rewarding experience. Participating artists have been working hard to present new and exciting creations to share. You can view a diverse assortment of work from silversmithing to sculpture, photography to painting, ceramics to mural making, and including such mediums as ceramic, mosaics, encaustic, oil and acrylics, pastels and lathe wood turning. Also it is fascinating to see the many ways artists carve out places to work, from a garage or a palm covered palapa in their yard, to a formal traditional studio space, all serve to enable the process of making art.

This is the signature event for the majority of artists who form the core of the Todos Santos art colony. Some of these artists were born here, while others settled in our small village because of its charming historic and cultural atmosphere, its pure light, and the beauty of a tropical setting bounded by the ocean and the surrounding desert. The Tour is an opportunity to view a wide spectrum how artists interpret living here, and melds their experiences into their unique artistic creations.

Los Cabos will host the Los Cabos Half Marathon with more than 1500 runners. Do you think the Liga MAC volunteers that first started the Jazz Festival believed that they were at the forefront of creating CH A N G E ?

They did! Some of these same volunteers have continued their efforts throughout the past 10 years and are still at the forefront of one of the

most successful events in Los Cabos. Jazz Fest profits enable the organization to expand their already hugely successful programs in education, medical assistance and a basic needs program.

The headliner, Grammy award winner Mavis Staples, began her musical career in Chicago as an entertainer singing in the church and occasionally performing on the radio.

When she graduated from high school, The Staple Singers went on the road led by the family patriarch, Roebuck “Pops” Staples on guitar and including the voices of Mavis and her three sisters. They evolved from gospel roots to become enormously popular spiritual and musical voices of the Civil Rights Movement, inspired by Pops’ close friendship with Martin Luther King, Jr. They continued to evolve and include contemporary pop hits in their repertoire. The Staple Singers hit the Top 40 eight times between 1971 and 1975, including two No. 1 singles, “I’ll Take You There” and “Let’s Do It Again”. Since that time Ms. Staples has had a varied and interesting career, one of several albums a 1996 release “Spirituals & Gospels: A Tribute to Mahalia Jackson.”

She also contributed to a Verve release honoring the great Ray Charles. Mavis Staples was nominated for a Grammy in 2003 for her duet with friend Bob Dylan, “Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals” for their duet, “Gotta Change My Way Of Thinking”. Among many other career events, Mavis performed at the 33rd Kennedy Center Honors, singing in tribute to Sir Paul McCartney.

And finally in 2011 Mavis Staples won her first Grammy award in the category of Best Americana Album for “You Are Not Alone”. That same year she was awarded an honorary doctorate from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts and another honorary doctorate award in 2012 from Columbia College Chicago.

ne must wonder if the whale heart is so big only to pump blood through a massive animal, or also to feel the biggest love for us, human fellows. Los Cabos whale season is one of the attractions that invite travellers around the globe to spend some time here, and February is the peak season to see whales in the Baja lagoons. During whale season, all you need is an ocean view and taste for patient contemplation, or as belief has it, a blessing from good fortune. In Baja you will see a Whale, breathing or jumping in all its grandiosity. If you don’t own your yacht, there are 2.5 hour tours leaving from the Marina in Cabo San Lucas three times per day dedicated to the whales.

One of the great migrations on the planet occurs along the Pacific Coast of North America as the magnificent Pacific Gray Whales migrate from the frozen Arctic, all the way to the isolated lagoons on the Pacific Coast of Baja California, Mexico. Gray whales migrate farther than any whale — or any mammal. Their 18,000-kilometer round trip (11,200 miles) takes them from the Bering Sea down the Pacific Coast of North America to Baja California and back to the Arctic.

The whales may travel so close to the coast that people can see them, of course, those who venture for a close encounter will find that it’s quite common for mother whales to bring their babies right up to the boat for a closer look. Babies play together and they swim close to the tourist boats. There, again, one must wonder about the Universe and who we are in relation to each other, don’t you think?

Where is the Whale? In February, more babies are being born, and courting and mating continue. Late arrivals are completing their southward migration, but their southward migration starts in early October, when the days grow shorter and northern waters begin to freeze. By December, whales may be seen courting and mating, many are on the migration route, some may be arriving in the lagoons of Mexico. Pregnant females are in a hurry to get to Mexico, so they arrive first. Other whales might take their time getting there. When January comes, more gray whales arrive in the warm lagoons of Mexico and begin to give birth to their young. Whales continue the courting and mating along the migration route and in the lagoons. By March, mother and baby pairs dominate the lagoons and it’s time for males and newly-pregnant females to start their journey north. New mothers are doing “spring training” for the babies so they’ll be ready for their own first migration and they swim with babies against the currents near the mouth of the lagoon, helping them build strength and endurance. In April, most of the adults and older juveniles are heading north while the first northbound whales may already have reached Alaska. The arctic sea ice has melted and open seas mean huge food supplies are again available, but mothers and babies stay longer in the Mexican lagoons. The babies need time to build up strength, as well as blubber for energy and warmth when they reach colder waters. In May, most of the mothers have started the long journey north with their babies. They travel close to the coast where waters are shallower. They stop often to nurse and rest. Meanwhile, most hungry older whales are completing their long migration north to their summer feeding grounds. In June the hungry whales are well into

the northern waters where they find plenty of food and where they feast and start to gain back weight they lost during migration and breeding/calving season. A few whales stop out along the Oregon and Washington Coast and stay all winter, but most whales keep going to the cold, food-filled waters off Alaska and Siberia and many mothers and babies complete their journey north. By July the arctic waters are teeming with food for the hungry whales, feeding and fattening is a whale’s main goal.

With ice melting further north, whales can now reach the northern limits of their feeding grounds in the Bering and Chuckchi Seas. Baby whales will nurse for six to eight months, but mothers teach them to scoop up and eat tiny amphipod off the ocean floor. By the month of August, migration and mating are just weeks away, and whales keep feasting in order to be ready. They must gain blubber enough to sustain them during the months ahead. A 30-ton whale will expend so much energy on the migration to the Baja lagoons that it may lose up to eight tons of its blubber. Little or no whale food is available in the breeding grounds, so this is their time to eat! The whales feast on the arctic feeding grounds from about June through September or October, and the cycle starts again.

Whales are revered in places like Alaska, Canada, Peru, New Zealand, as creatures of spiritual wisdom, and their history is closely connected with their culture, but it is here, in the Sea of Cortez, where the Gray whale have gathered in Ojo de Liebre and the inlets of Bahía Magdalena for centuries to mate, calve, and relax.

Like us, most marine animals rely on sound for survival and depend on unique adaptations that enable them to communicate, protect themselves, locate food, and navigate underwater. Animals change the rate of sound production and the structure of the sounds to send different messages. Communication over long distances is usually associated with reproduction, territoriality, and maintenance of group structure. Communication over short distances is used in social interactions involving aggression, individual identification, and to maintain mother-offspring contact. Most marine mammals use sound to regain contact when members of a group are separated. Similar to sonar systems on navy ships, some whales use sound to detect, localize, and characterize objects, including obstacles and other whales. By emitting clicks, or short pulses of sound, these marine mammals can listen for echoes and detect objects underwater. Some whales and dolphins use sound to locate food. They send out pulsed sounds of high intensity and frequency that are reflected back when they strike a target. This echo helps the dolphin or whale identify the size and shape of an object, the direction in which the object is moving and enables them to estimate how far away the object is. Echolocation is a very sophisticated way of locating prey and can even be used to find prey that is hidden in the sand. For them, as for us, listening is of key importance to maintain peace and balance in their world.

Whales have long captured the imaginations of people around the world, who have hunted, revered, and passionately protected them. According to science, the ancestors of whales lived on land. Once whales adapted to the water about 50 million years ago, they diversified and came to inhabit the world’s oceans. Almost 80 species are alive today. How do skeletons of the whales that lived on land compare to those that were fully aquatic? In aquatic whales, hind limbs are smaller or absent, nostrils move towards top of head, forelimbs evolve into flippers, vertebrae in tail flatten. Today, whales are identified

These massive sharks pose no threat to humans – they are filter feeders, which suck in enormous amounts of plankton and small fish as food. Some of the most popular attractions in nearby La Paz are boat tours on which guests have the opportunity to observe and swim with these beautiful creatures.

either as Mysticeti (these ones have baleen), and the Odontoceti whale who have teeth. Mysticeti tend to be larger, have two blowholes instead of one, and emit lowfrequency sounds than the higher frequency produced by odontocetes. In addition to sight, whales rely on the ability to produce and perceive different sounds in order to navigate, find food, and communicate. The whale finds its prey through echolocation, the process of emitting sound waves and listening to the echoes to locate food and avoid obstacles. Different whale species make a variety of sounds, ranging from throaty rumbles and melodious phrases to squeaks, whistles, clicks, and buzzes.

What are some causes of whale stranding? Parasites, pollution, disease, disorientation, accidents with boats, entanglements with fishing gear. Weakened whales may swim into shallow water where it is easier to breathe.

How have humans responded? They have tried to rescue whales, collected meat and bones, taken samples for scientific research. How have behaviours and attitudes towards hunting whales changed over time? Beached whales were passively gathered; development of commercial whaling reduced some populations to brink of extinction, a global whale conservation movement has emerged.

The lives of many people around the world have been inextricably linked with whales. Whaling traditions in America are seen through artefacts such as a the whale oil lamp, a log book from the New England whaling ship William Rotch that describes two whaling voyages in the 1830s -one across the Pacific Ocean and another to the South Atlantic- or an early edition of Moby Dick. Whale imagery is incorporated into architecture and body art, and whale bone weapons and ornaments are prized.

In the Americas, native people have long utilized and honoured whales, relying upon their meat for food, bone for tools and building material, and oil for fuel — and upon the majestic animals themselves as source of spiritual inspiration.

One must wonder.*

Recently, I was fortunate enough to join a group of six on a tour to swim with these gentle giants.

The tour began 8:30 am with 20-30 minute boat ride from Pichilingue to the whale shark feeding grounds. Within a few minutes of reaching the turquoise blue water, we eyed telltale fins breaking the surface. Soon we could see a dark, spotted hulk sliding through the water. At nearly 10 meters in length and with an aggressively pointed tail and dorsal fins, there was no doubt that this was a whale shark!

The shark swam slowly, and many of us were eager – though a bit nervous – to dive in to see the beast up-close. The captain, however, urged us to be patient. He suggested that we wait to find a shark which was stationary to avoid exhausting ourselves.

We spotted several other sharks swimming lazily around the boat and each time the captain asked us to wait. We were soon rewarded for our patience, as we came across two of the giant fish hovering below the surface. The crew quickly situated us with fins and snorkel gear, and we slipped into the water.

It was colder than expected and for a moment I wished I had rented a wetsuit, but that thought passed quickly as I approached the enormous fish. They were easily four meters long, hanging almost vertically with their tails descending. Their enormous mouths opened and closed, gulping huge quantities of plankton-clouded water. Though we knew they were not dangerous, it was unnerving to be so close to such gigantic creatures. We had been asked by the crew not to hang on to or touch the whale sharks, and we were careful not to interfere as we swam around them, continually impressed by their size and beautifully patterned skin.

Soon we climbed back aboard the boat, each of us smiling. We enjoyed sodas while spying several more sharks on the ride back to the marina.

The encounter with the whale sharks was one of the most incredible and gratifying adventures we’d ever experienced, and I know I will never forget it. I can’t wait to go back next year!

Oaxaca, Mexico, a state in southern Mexico known for its richly ar tistic traditions, has seventeen dif ferent indigenous minorities, many of whom speak languages other than Spanish.

This remarkable array of cultures and folklore provide the major theme in Mar tinez’s works. Fiestas, folk customs and even the tex tiles of the region find their way into Mar tinez’s paintings, contributing to what the ar tist describes as “ figurative magic”.

Leovigildo, born in 1959 in Oaxaca, Mexico, is considered a member of the “Oaxacan School” magical realist style. Apart from numerous exhibits in Mexico he has also exhibited in California and New York.

Leovigildo is the illustrator of three children’s books of Oaxacan folk tales: 25 Mixtec Cats, Uncle Snake and The Moon Was at a Fiesta (Tambourine Books). He studied art in Oaxaca at both the Centro de Educación Artístico de Oaxaca and the Taller de Artes Plásticas Rufino Tamayo.

This artist’s public collections are found at the Latinamerican Art Museum a Punta del Este, Uruguay, as well as in The Mexican art Museum of Chicago. Michoacán Church This Day of the Dead image was shot in Morelia the beautiful capitol city of the state of Michoacán, in central west Mexico.

The people you see are from the strong and proud Purepachecka tribe who hold strongly to their tribal identity and traditions. The altar is a classic representation of a Day of the Dead offerendum adorned with food flowers and candles in hopes of attracting souls of those who have passed on back for a visit. In this case, they are honouring a famous Dr. Quiroga, who had once many years ago helped the tribe survive a deadly epidemic of influenza.

His oil painted portrait is part of the altar. Today altars are often adorned with photos of those who have passed on. The baskets near the women would contain food , drink and other items representing things that he might have liked during his life. There is also the town of Quiroga near lake Pátzquaro named in honour of the good Doctor who helped these people so long ago.

A fundraising art and cultural event to help raise money to support the many children who are residents of Hogar del Niño; a small orphanage where they receive the love and care they so desperately need. In Spanish, ‘’Hogar’’ means home, as in Home of the Kids.

‘’Last year’s Mask Project, was the highly successful Skull Project,’’ said Nancy Serfas, the events organizer and founder. ‘’I was moved to begin fundraising for the children at Hogar del Nino after becoming

Our first two events were food and wine dinners which were sold out. Each time since then, we have raised enough money to support the orphanage for about a month.’’ ‘’Last year I was trying to think of some way to raise money that would be different and fun and the idea of decorating cow skulls popped into my head,’’ added Nancy, ‘’Rounding up 30 skulls was a challenge

that my husband and I spent weeks getting them clean enough to use. I passed them out to Todos Santos’ most well known artists (Michael Cope, Eric Ochoa, Doug West, Jill Logan, Gloria Ruenitz, and many more).

We had a total of 45 skulls and the results were amazing. They hung at Galeria de Todos Santos for a week and were sold by silent auction. I was hoping to average $100.00 per skull but we made $11,000.00 U.S. dollars. Unbelievable!’’ ‘’Topping last year’s fundraising amount is going to be tough,’’ speculates Nancy, ‘’but the project this year is masks. Anyone who wants to participate and donate a mask is encouraged to contact me. We need to have the masks by February 1. They will again hang at Galeria de Todos Santos and be sold by silent auction.

There are currently 27 children in the loving care of Hogar del Nino.’’

Masks must be hand made out of paper, plaster, ceramic gourds, wood, flotsam, jetsam, etc. Paper mache’ forms were available at the end of November for $50 pesos, which is less than $4 US dollars.

A young girl with her first new bicycle; a preteen opening a purse to find barrettes and bracelets; a small boy unwrapping a big box of Lego. The smiles on children’s faces on Christmas Eve at the Centro de Apoyo Liga MAC touched hearts with the spirit of giving.

The annual Christmas Posada marks the culmination of the Liga MAC holiday series of four events. First, at the Christmas Fiesta in the Shoppes at Palmilla, attendees donate toys for children up to 12 years of age. The Fiesta is followed by a day of sorting gifts into appropriate age and probable gender groups and next comes a day of gift-wrapping.

Finally, on Christmas Eve, Santa distributes gifts, in a posada complete with piñatas and candy. “It’s rewarding to see the satisfaction in the faces of parents as they watch the their children unwrap beautiful gifts,” says Liga MAC Executive Director Elva Haro. “The Posada at the Centro brings some ease to the pressure of the Season.”

Recipients of donated gifts are children of families Liga MAC has helped during the year thorough the Despensa or Basic Needs program.

In this program, San José del Cabo residents facing severe financial difficulty are carefully screened to establish need. Families enter the program for a three-month cycle intended as a bridge for achieving financial stability. Vouchers for food at local supermarkets are delivered twice monthly and recipients also receive counsel and tools for living from local professionals.

Planning for the annual series of four holiday events begins in early November. Sponsors including the Shoppes at Palmilla, El Wine Shop, Hilton Los Cabos, Oxten, DalMar Music Studio, ITSA, Palabra de Vida, and choir director Miguel Escobosa are enlisted. Donated items for raffle are collected, home-made appetizers are baked and the Christmas tree is set up before guests begin to arrive, arms laden with toys for donation.

“ A person does not hear sound only through the ears; he hears sound through every pore of his body. It permeates the entire being, and according to its particular influence either slows or quickens the rhythm of the blood circulation; it either wakens or soothes the nervous system. It arouses a person to greater passions or it calms him by bringing him peace. According to the sound and its influence a certain effect is produced. Sound becomes visible in the form of radiance. This shows that the same energy which goes into the form of sound before being visible is absorbed by the physical body. When there is no clarity of mind our relationship with our Self, and others, falls into conflict as we see how our words and actions disappoint our desire to live a fulfilling life. Maybe the most dangerous symptom of an unclear mind is the dreadful feeling of others against I, and that I must be someone who I am not to be liked by others, or even worse I surrender my happiness to the mercy of what others do with it, and I convince myself that others have to change in order for me to be happy. Self importance takes over, suddenly it is all about me and I forget why it is that I am here, in this Universe, which in fact is probably the same reason why others are here, in this Universe.

Why am I doing what I am doing? If no clear answer comes to this question, I must clear my mind. Or like Einstein said, “if you can’t explain it to a 10 year old, you do not understand it yourself.” For those who choose the path of yoga know that the first teaching behind the practice is to “know thyself”. Yoga is a practice of self observation, a practice of equanimity and awareness. The benefit? A clear peaceful mind.

So, I detox. I remember. When I don’t know what to do, I do nothing until my mind is clear. I stay still, observe and listen.*

Thousands of people around the world follow his advice on a daily basis, when he says that there is no healing if you are not honouring what you are feeling. “The healthier my relationship with myself becomes, believe it or not, the healthier my relationships with the people in my life becomes.” Healthy being the key idea here. Think about it, after all, it does not serve me to think I am beautiful, if I do not feel beautiful. Based on this observation, maybe our beauty tip of this month can be that when you don’t feel beautiful, first define what being beautiful means to you, then observe your sensations and ask yourself, how do I feel? Remember your intention and one breath at a time, one issue at a time, one relationship at a time, moment by moment, realign your definition so you can bring into equilibrium the unbalances of your body and mind, until your inner voice answers your question saying...beautiful!

Remember that quantity is key here. That’s why dark chocolate works well for me. I don’t need to eat the whole thing to satisfy a craving and its actually great for my skin. (3-4 squares of 70% Cacao chocolate for best results) Kale: Packed full with vitamin C and iron, kale is a super food which helps prevent skin damage and irritation. It can calm redness and inflammation and is loaded with antioxidants which keep the elasticity in your skin. It’s also super for your eyesight so you can keep sharp laser vision and also great for weight loss. I personally don’t like kale, BUT I found out that you don’t even taste it if you mix it in your vanilla protein shake in the morning. I like to add some natural peanut butter and coconut oil so it tastes pretty darn good.

Berries: All berries are rich in vitamins and antioxidants that combat free radicals and make your skin glow. They also have nutrients that prevent breakouts. Fruit smoothies ( with fresh berries) are the way to go.

A NEW YEAR BRINGS NEW INVENTORY FOR BUYERS In what seems to be just a blink of the eye, 2013 is behind us and now our fresh start to 2014 has begun!

Just like any new start to a new year, there are some things we can all expect…Gym memberships will spike and for us in Cabo, new homes will come on the market. In our seasonal market here in Los Cabos, it is common that Listing Brokers suggest to their clients to bring their new listing active during our high season when the majority of the buyers are in town looking to purchase. Thus, January has brought new listings and new inventory to our market, which is very exciting for buyers.

While most of the new inventory and new listings are re-sales, something we are seeing more of is that developers seem to be adjusting to the market and offering more of a variety products at different prices.

For example, some of the exclusive private clubs and residential communities have now released new condos and townhomes at more attractive pricing, rather than just $2 Million dollar and up homes as they did in the past. This is great for our market because while many of our clients see the strong future in Los Cabos and Mexico, some wish to start more conservative and invest as the years go on.

Being able to offer listings at all different pricing levels is a great service to the buyers we work with at our brokerage. When we first consult with an active buyer, we encourage them to dig into the market statistics and learn about our market and see at what level they feel comfortable investing. Educating our clients on the new inventory, developer offerings, and the different price ranges and amenities that come with them, allows our buyers to purchase with absolute confidence. Our team of agents are heavily involved in the community, attend all open houses and developer events, and are full time Realtors who monitor the movement and sales in our market on a daily basis. This type of commitment is what our clients expect from us, as they should.

What are the most important reasons that people have made their homes in Los Cabos? What is the spirit and background of the local culture? Why do visitors come to Los Cabos? If we answer all these questions and create buildings and environments that put them all together in a respectful way we will create a place that, with integrity, brings people, culture and nature together.

Describe the positive effects that inspiring surrounds have on people’s lives, as you have experienced it.

People who eat healthy food, get plenty of exercise and have a balanced, positive outlook on life tend to flourish and lead happier lives. Our environment is really our extension of our bodies and minds. Harmony and beauty make us feel uplifted and positive. We humans are creatures of nature. We are enriched by being close to nature, sunlight, views and vistas, plants and birds, and so on. We are naturally inspired by tall mountains, vast oceans and beautiful sunsets. Architecture designed to help us focus our attention on these things inspires us and makes us feel a true love of life.

What is your opinion about Sacred Geometry?

I have great respect for classical proportions, including the golden section. These proportions are generally based on the ideal human figure. You can find these same proportions throughout nature. I don’t know why, but people are intuitively attracted to these proportions and they help to define how we perceive beauty.

How would you answer a 10 year old who does not know who you are, when he asks you this question: Who are you and how would you like to be remembered?

I have spent my entire life searching for beauty in the world. When I find it, I try to frame it with my architecture so that others will see the beauty too. I would like to be remembered as an architect who taught people to pause and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us every moment of our lives. I would like to be the architect who helped people see the world through the eyes of the artist within them.
