He spoke passionately about the altruist cause behind the Todos Santos Music Festival and showed his excitement for this year's festival. LOS CABOS & South Baja

Los Cabos (the capes) is located in the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. In between you will find smaller towns and points of interest such as Santiago and Miraflores, located inland at the skirts of the Sierra de la Laguna, or Migriño and Pescadero which are located on the Pacific side, in between Cabo San Lucas and Todos Santos THE AQUARIUM OF THE WORLD. These are the words that the Jacques Cousteau used to describe the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this “trap” and either stayed in its warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool bottom of the two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez.

THE BAJA SUR LOOP Take a look at the Baja Sur map bellow; you can see that the highways and towns form a loop.

Ongoing road improvements and new highway constructions are making road trips quicker and easier every year. The new highway from Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos is impressively well done, making it only a 45 minute drive.

Cabo San Lucas Also just known as “Cabo,” is a tourist friendly town located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula that’s full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo arch.

Cabo San Lucas has the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

The Corridor The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 25 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities or at the Cabo Real arroyo for a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

San José del Cabo Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district. From November through June, the popular Art Walk takes place every Thursday evening where galleries welcome

guests to sip some wine while they view their exhibits; however, the galleries are open year-round. San José del Cabo’s historical downtown also offers world-class restaurants from Mexican gourmet cuisine to authentic Thai food. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride and explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

East Cape People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast.

Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving and turtle nesting on the beach.

Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and folks who just want to get away from it all.

Todos Santos Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf.

Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the Pacific’s breezes.

La Paz La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches.

This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer. *

USEFUL INFORMATION Exchange rates - Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will most likely get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate.

IMPORTANT PHONE NUMBERS

ATMs - The easiest and most cost effective way to get pesos is not to bring dollars and exchange them, but simply to pull pesos out of an ATM after you arrive in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate) with reasonable fees. Examples include Banorte, Santander, Banamex, and HSBC. If you go to a non-bank ATM, you will pay higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing. Try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

Cash or Card? - Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only places, so always ask beforehand and carry cash.

Tipping - Standard tipping rates are about 15%.

Buying groceries - San José has two major grocery stores; Wal-Mart and Mega. Mega is a higher-end option with more American products, but is slightly more expensive that Wal-Mart. San Lucas has a Wal-Mart and Costco. If you just need to grab something quickly, OXXO stores are small, reasonably priced convenient stores located all over town.

Driving - Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating to some, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna or verde (green) which is regular and Premium or roja (red). Lleno (pronounced yeno) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos (less than a dollar) is customary.

FISHING REPORT All that’s fishy from Lands End to La Paz

BOATING & FISHING

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos.

Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate your needs.

What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost.

Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers and pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day.

THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas, the area’s largest commercial marina, features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos, located in La Playita, just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in the area with 200 available slips 8

for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels.

FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years.

This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is.

What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment.

Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early, and trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours.

Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%.

Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

Holidays are done and New Year's resolutions for 2015 have been decided. Personal bests are always gratifying and it's important to remember that when fishing, you're just a fish away from a perfect day.

In the case of Buzz and Mary Fedorka, East Cape, in early December aboard Dottie B II with Captain Vicente Cosio, one 317-pound yellowfin tuna was just that fish, plus it was a personal best for Buzz!

For the big-game set, striped marlin are here in volume, ready to help you greet the New Year with a challenging catch.

In addition to cow-sized tuna there are some nice-sized tuna to 25 pounds mixed in and some football-sized underneath the porpoise farther offshore. Throw the little ones back and wait for the dinnersized tuna.

Speaking of dinner, the wahoo bite has been one of the best in a decade. Early risers, they are often the first bite of the day so don't be late for the trip.

If less travel and more fishing is your goal, there are dorado inshore and even closer to shore, sierra, roosterfish and possibly an early-season yellowtail. Plus another option is bottom fishing for a couple of additional good eating fish, red snapper and grouper.

With the desert meeting the Sea of Cortez as a backdrop, there is no doubt why Los Cabos has become a championship golf destination over the years. From Tiger Woods to Nicklaus and Fazio, many of the big names in golf have designed courses on this unique landscape.

There are private courses such as Diamante, Querencia and El Dorado where you have to be invited by a member to in order to play. Many public courses offer a reduced rate later in the day during twilight hours. Appropriate golf attire is required on all courses and club rental prices range from $35 to $ 65.

CABO DEL SOL Ocean Course - A Jack Nicklaus signature course with six ocean front holes (1.5 miles). Known for its “3 finest finishing holes in golf” the Ocean Course is said to be one of the most difficult yet beautiful courses in the area.

Baja Sur has been a popular surfing destination since the ‘50s. The East Cape is popular for kite surfing and the Pacific coast has several surf breaks where you will find less crowds. See our map on page 5 and look for this symbol to locate the surf spots mentioned bellow.

SEASONS June through November The summer months are known to be the best as the Southern Hemisphere’s swells send great waves to the Pacific, Cabo San Lucas, San José and the East Cape.

December through February East Cape and Costa Azul are on the flatter side. The Pacific can be good this time of year because it’s exposed to the west swell.

March through May This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

KITE SURFING

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December.

STAND UP PADDLING

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just your paddle and your board. Stand up paddling is growing to be more popular each year and is available all around Los Cabos. It’s a great way to see marine life, to get a great workout and to enjoy nature. At Médano beach you can rent boards in several locations. Paddle along the rocks of Land’s End to make your way to Lover’s Beach and the Arch. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.

Tips!

• Your feet should be parallel, about hip-width distance apart, centred between the board rails (edges).

• Keep toes pointed forward, knees bent and your back straight. Balance with your hips and core. Keep your arms straight and twist from your torso as you paddle.

Think of using your torso to paddle rather than your arms; you have more strength in the abdominal muscles than in your arms. Your gaze should be level at the horizon and avoid staring at your feet.

• If you’re paddling on the right, your right hand is lower and on the paddle shaft. Your top left hand is on the top of the grip. The elbow (angle) of the paddle faces away from you.

• Plant the paddle by pushing the blade all the way under the surface, pull it back to your ankle, then out of the water. To go in a reasonably straight line, paddle about 4 or 5 strokes on one side, then switch to the other. When you switch sides, you’ll reverse hand positions.

• When you fall aim yourself to the side so you don’t fall the board.

Los Cabos offers entertainment for all ages and is an ideal destination for families.

Blown Glass Factory Don’t miss this factory located in Cabo San Lucas where youngsters can watch the highlyskilled artisans perform the art of glass-blowing.

Adults can shop for that one (or probably more than one) perfect piece to take home. Make sure you visit the factory before 2:00 pm in order to catch the show.

Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks and eco-adventure companies in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, back-country ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Ask your concierge to setup your adventure.

Swim with Dolphins Los Cabos has a few facilities where you and your kids can swim with trained dolphins. By visiting one of the dolphin centres you and your kids will experience a one-on-one connection that will be memorable.

You will learn special hand signals and ways to communicate positive reinforcement to the dolphins. Swimming with dolphins is a very gratifying and joyful experience for people of all ages.

Wet Fun Water Park Located about 20 minutes from San José, this water park has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms, a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps water on the bystanders bellow. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at km 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right.

Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends.

Whale Watching Whale watching in Los Cabos is an unforgettable experience for any age.

During the months of December through March, it is not hard to find whales breaching just off the shore. Book a private charter or take one of the many whale watching tours available.

Horse-back lessons at Cuadra San Francisco This world class equestrian centre was established in 1994 by Francisco J. Barrena M. and is home to about 50 horses. Each one has been trained by professionals to ensure safety and an enjoyable ride. The riding school’s speciality is high level dressage, which is an excellent way to perfect any riding discipline and to become an better rider overall. The staff can accommodate riders of any age and skill level. Cuadra San Francisco is located at km. 19.5 of the main highway between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.

ADVENTURE

Los Cabos offers a number of entertainment options for adventure seekers. From guided bicycle tours to a sunset horseback ride on the beach or a high-speed zipline across one of the many local canyons, pick an adventure that is right for you and get out there!

Buggy, Atv, Or Bike Rentals There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun!

Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid drivers’ license.

If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike, beach cruiser, or joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Just make sure to wear a helmet!

Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offer a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve.

Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Cactuslovers may also want to check out the nearby cactus gardens Wirikuta, offering a large variety of cacti laid out in an artful outdoor setting.

Parasailing, Bungee Jumping, and Ziplines Get ready to shout “Geronimo!” as you leap off a platform in one of the most extreme outings! Several local adventure-parks provide bungee jumping packages, and high speed zipline canopy tours are offered in a number of local canyons. If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat!

Cabo San Lucas

Along the Corridor

If you’re looking for the action, here it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and family-friendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see.

LAS VIUDAS

José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area.

Santa Maria provides no services and hardly any shade. You can rent umbrellas on the beach, but if you happen to have one, bring it anyway. Snorkelling gear will help you get the most of this beautiful beach!

MEDANO BEACH

Las Viudas (The Widows) beach is not visible from the road and is possibly the most private beach you will find on this list. What makes it unique are the rock formations which create small pools and coves where you can have a private and peaceful beach day. This beach is swimmable with caution but if you find your own pool you can avoid the waves.

Turn right at Km. 12.5 of the corridor and follow the dirt road down to the beach. There is a sign that reads “Las Viudas” but slow down and keep your eyes peeled; the entrance may sneak up on you.

You won’t find any services or vendors so bring all your beach essentials with you.

Tips:

CHILENO

Chileno is a very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newly-installed palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. This is the only beach with public restrooms and it has plenty of palapas for shade.

Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway.

If you visit Chileno on a weekend, make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and, if you beat the crowds, you’ll be guaranteed a palapa to yourself for much-needed shade. Bring snorkelling gear!

PALMILLA

Palmilla beach is known for its family-friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis.

In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. This is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador.

Tips:

Be prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No, gracias.” Prices don’t vary much from one water sports rental place to another. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

LOVER’S BEACH

Getting there is an adventure in itself, due to the fact that it is reachable only by boat or kayak. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Prices are around $15.00 USD per person. Ask your captain to cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive, you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so swim on Lover’s Beach only.

Land’s End beside the famous arch. This beach is accessible only by boat.

There are a couple of vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services. A good idea is to spend the day at Medano Beach and take an hour or two to go to Lover’s Beach; this should be time enough to explore this natural wonderland.

SANTA MARIA

Santa Maria offers a stunning horseshoe cove with coralcoloured sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors.

COSTA AZUL

If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot you can find it here without driving out of town. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where the Cabo Surf Hotel and Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and stand-up paddle boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer, and in the winter this is a good spot for snorkelling and swimming.

Exit at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge.

Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers.

LOS CABOS 101 LA PLAYITA

La Playita (the little beach) is a long stretch of beach where you will often find locals fishing from the shore and families with children enjoying the beach-front playground. On the right end of La Playita you can find a roped-off swimming area just outside the entrance to the beautiful Puerto Los Cabos 500-slip marina. To the left is the natural open beach where you can swim, skim-board and enjoy a peaceful beach day away from the crowds.

Follow the signs to La Playita/ Puerto Los Cabos from Boulevard Mijares in downtown San José del Cabo (across from the fire department).

You will find new and well-maintained bathrooms, palapas and fishing charters. There are no food services directly on the beach, but several casual restaurants dot the surrounding area.

On the Pacific CERRITOS

Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day on the beach or, if you want to be active, you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop.

Location: This bay lies about 30 minutes

from the boardwalk in La Paz. Simply follow the main drag along the boardwalk, then through Costa Baja Golf Course and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach.

No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed. There are palapas, but not many. Kayaks and snorkel gear are offered.

Loreto

ISLA CORONADO

A wildlife reserve where visitors may anchor, snorkel, scuba and camp lies on this island. The panga ride usually includes a cruise around the island where it’s very common to see sea lions, seals and even sea otters. The only swimmable beach on the island has pristine white sand and shallow crystal clear turquoise water, which creates ideal snorkelling conditions. Coronado Island is the ideal place for an adventure or to simply immerse yourself in nature and relax.

Bring hiking shoes if you plan to explore the area. Snorkelling gear is a plus!

BALANDRA

Balandra is a stunning bay that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist-high, crystal clear water with shades of turquoise blue. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock” as well as other interesting rock formations. Pictures just don’t do it justice.

January 11 ~ San José del Cabo’s Colors 5K Run - On Sunday January 11 at 9:00 a.m., the City of San José del Cabo will hold a 5K family run to benefit the fight against autism. The 5K run will start and finish at Plaza Pescador and is sponsored by Solamar Resorts, Costco, The Tribuna Newspapers and the Red Autism non-profit organization. Entry fees are $200 pesos for adults and $100 pesos for children under 15 years of age.

January 1-6 ~ Cleaning Medano Beach - Everyone is invited to help volunteers to clean Medano Beach of debris to keep this beautiful strip of Cabo San Lucas sand in pristine condition, as nature intended. Concerned citizens and visitors to Los Cabos are asked to meet in front of Baja Cantina/Cabo Villas on the beach at 7:00 a.m. Volunteers will be given trash bags and latex gloves to help maintain the beauty of Medano Beach for everyone to enjoy. This is an annual event that takes place during the cool winter morning months of December, January and February.

January 7-11 ~ The 8th Annual Los Cabos Pro-Am Golf Tournament Check in, for this 8th Annual prestigious golf tournament begins on Wednesday January 7 at the Sheraton Hacienda del Mar Resort, located along the corridor. A welcome reception of cocktails and hors d'oeuvres will take place at the hotel's Fiesta Palapa 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening. The first round of golf action begins the following morning, January 8, at 10:00 a.m. on Cabo del Sol's Ocean Course. Friday, January 10, will showcase the competition contested on Cabo del Sol's Desert Course. Each morning will begin with a breakfast buffet at Tomato's restaurant. The field for this event is limited to the first 20 teams who registered and submitted deposits by September 15, 2014.

January 13 ~ Global Mango Supply Chain Conference - A one-day conference by the International Mango Organization (IMO) to discuss several critical issues affecting the mango industry will take place from 10:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. in Cabo San Lucas.

Founded in 2000, the IMO is dedicated to serving the global mango community by addressing issues pertinent to the mango world at large. The first conference was held in 2000 within the city limits of La Quinta, California. The second such mango global summit was hosted in 2003 by Malaga, Spain. In 2004, the Mango Conference was held at the Fairfield Botanical Garden in Miami, Florida. Guests of this Cabo mango conference will visit local mango groves as part of the young and growing worldwide event.

January 15-18 ~ The 4th Annual Lord of the Wind Showdown - Continuing their mission to create the largest international windsurfing, kiteboarding, and stand-up paddle board event in the world, the Los Barriles East Cape Rotary Club has this year garnered further support from the Baja California Sur Tourism Board and Annex Brands.

The four-day ocean side spectacle will once again showcase some of the best kiteboarding and SUPboard athletes in the western hemisphere. Considered by many as the X-Games of the Ocean, the Lords of the Wind Showdown consists of competitive rounds where athletes battle it out on Sea of Cortez waters in windsurfing, kiteboarding and stand-up paddle-boarding before a panel of judges and awestruck fans. Proceeds from the 2013 Showdown helped the East Cape Rotary Club build a Technology Center in Los Barriles. This year's goal is to help initiate a laptop-lending program and create English language courses for the city's underprivileged youth. Awards and prizes for this event have steadily risen from its original $10,000 to this year’s $20,000. The event has enhanced and popularized the multiple categories and varying competitions combining the Sea of Cortez and the Southern Baja California winds provided by good old Mother Nature.

SCHEDULES AND LINE-UP

Starting in mid-month October, one of the greatest migrations on the planet occurs along the Pacific Coast of North America as the magnificent Pacific Gray Whales migrate from the frozen Arctic, all the way to the isolated lagoons on the Pacific Coast of Baja California, Mexico. Gray whales migrate farther than any whale — or any mammal. Their 18,000-kilometer round trip (11,200 miles) takes them from the Bering Sea down the Pacific Coast of North America to Baja California and back to the Arctic.

Pregnant females are in a hurry to get to Mexico, so they arrive first. When January comes, more gray whales arrive in the warm lagoons of the Gulf of California and begin to give birth to their young. By March, mother and baby pairs dominate the lagoons and it’s time for males and newly-pregnant females to start their journey north. New mothers are doing “spring training” for the babies so they’ll be ready for their own first migration; they swim with babies against the currents near the mouth of the lagoon, helping them build strength and endurance. In April, most of the adults and older juveniles are heading north while the first northbound whales may already have reached Alaska. The arctic sea ice has melted and open seas mean huge food supplies are again available, but mothers and babies stay longer in the Mexican lagoons.

In Los Cabos, keep your eyes pealed since the whales may travel so close to the coast that people can see them, of course, those who venture for a close encounter will find that it’s quite common for mother whales to bring their babies right up to the boat for a closer look. Book one of the many tour options available in order to take a close look at these gentile giants of the sea.

This year marks the 4th anniversary of the Todos Santos Music Festival and with the

continued growth and a longer list of performers than ever before, it is guaranteed

to be the biggest and most exciting event yet. The festival has become a coveted destination for an eclectic group of musicians and music enthusiasts from all over the world, and will be taking place on January 16-18 and January 22-25.

With its picturesque setting, collaborative performances, and philanthropic spirit, the festival celebrates the deep cultural roots of the town of Todos Santos by mixing music industry legends and local artists to raise funds for local charities such as The Palapa Society of Todos Santos.

Because it follows so closely on the heels of Hurricane Odile, this year’s festival proceeds will focus on benefitting The Palapa Society’s Hurricane Relief Fund for all those who suffered from the devastation of the epic storm.

“The needs in Todos Santos in the wake of Hurricane Odile are overwhelming,” said festival creator Peter Buck, co-founder and lead guitarist of alternative rock band R.E.M. “Thanks to the cooperation of The Palapa Society and Hotel California, we will donate all of the profits from the 2015 festival to help people in Todos Santos reconstruct their lives, homes and businesses. We also hope that the festival’s return in January will serve as a symbol of the town’s resilience and ability to bounce back from this terrible tragedy.”

It was January of 2012 when Buck’s vision was first brought to life with the help of Vaso Loco LLC and the legendary Hotel California. Buck had owned a house in Todos Santos for upwards of five years and began asking amongst friends how he could help benefit local children and help provide for their education. Buck has a long history of promoting this kind of effort, and he wished to continue his philanthropic efforts in his new home. It was no surprise when it was suggested that he should work with The Palapa Society.

“He first contacted us in November of 2011 saying that he wanted to do a music festival,” said Palapa Society Vice President and member of the festival committee Donna Viglione. “He said that he could have many of his friends come down and play, and that all the money raised would go support The Palapa. This was really something, because we were still really struggling for funds at that point.”

“So we started meeting with Peter right away,” continued Viglione, “And almost immediately the Hotel California said that this could be the venue. It was incredible – the spirit of the way everybody came together to make the festival happen – and immediately there was huge excitement. Amazingly, we all made it a reality only ninety days later!”

Today the festival continues to be inspired by the vibrant artistic spirit of Todos Santos itself, successfully working to add music to the long list of artistic endeavors hosted in this Pueblo Mágico of Baja California Sur, Mexico.

The Todos Santos Music Festival has also been very successful in raising The Palapa Society’s profile, which it certainly needed, and helping to develop what has become a highly regarded and respected operation in the special little town.

“By having this funding each year from the festival to rely on, The Palapa Society has been given the ability to expand its programs and reach out to a lot more students with scholarships, educational opportunities, and medical assistance,” said Viglione. “It’s been a wonderful collaboration and we are very happy to be a part of it. We all work very hard during the festival and all it takes to make it happen. It truly is extremely rewarding.”

Since the inception of The Palapa Society in 2003, the basic goal of this multi-cultural, non-profit Mexican Civil Association remains the same: optimizing opportunities for local children and their families. By working with various community entities and through the efforts of many dedicated volunteers, The Palapa continues to be quite successful in achieving their mission. Now in their tenth year, improved financial health has allowed them to broaden the levels of educational and medical support provided, and

has put the group in a position to expand their development to include environmental and cultural programs that further involve and benefit the children of the community.

“We consider children to be the most precious resource of all, and we are constantly working to improve the quality of their lives,” says Viglione. “We believe the secret to the future of this pueblo, and the promise for a better world, resides in the education and welfare of our children.”

A CHAT WITH PETER BUCK

Originally established to make a difference by bringing together various artists to raise funds for many important local charities, the 2014 Music Festival raised $62,000 which was distributed to several of the town’s most invaluable organizations.

While the Festival has grown steadily over the last few years, a big part of the magic of the event is just how accessible it has been kept for everyone.

“It’s been a little daunting watching it grow,” said Viglione.

“We’re wondering how much bigger it can possibly get. With the reserved seating already sold out for each night at the hotel, and The Town Plaza getting just about as full as it can get on the closing night, the festival is about at the capacity of what the venues can support.”

If you missed out on this year’s reserved seats, don’t worry.

General admission tickets will still be available at the door. Access to shows at the hotel is just $50.00 Pesos, and, of course, the final night’s performance in the historic downtown plaza is free for all!

“That’s part of what makes it such a unique experience,” says Viglione, “that these world-class musicians are so close and accessible.

I think that’s part of what the musicians really like about it, too: that intimacy. As big as it’s gotten, it still has such a relaxed and intimate feel. They appear to be having just as much fun as all the people who come to hear the music!”

For the first few years I paid for everybody's expenses myself and all the revenue from the tickets went to the charities. At first, it was just the Palapa Society and then it also went to various other charities that are in town. This year a lot of the money is going to hurricane rebuilding reliefs. I always believed that you should try to do something for the town you live in and pay back your debts in a way. I'm very happy to be involved with these great organizations and to meet all the people that are behind them and that do all the work.

How did you first become involved with the Palapa Society?

Our friends had mentioned the Palapa Society, and I have a lot of Mexican friends whose kids don't get the same opportunities that my kids had because of the education system. The Palapa Society does a great job bridging these kids from the local schools into the colleges.

It was a shame that kids couldn't reach the potential they wanted to. There weren’t a lot of options in some ways and the Palapa Society offers a great alternative and resource for kids and parents, as well.

My wife had been going [to the Baja] for years and her grandparents had been going to Todos Santos since 1985. We started going 7 or 8 years ago and I ended up buying a house. I’ve always loved Mexico. I have a great time down there, and I really like the small-town aspect of Todos Santos.

What's a perfect day in Todos Santos for you?

I usually get up and take a long walk, go to the beach and go for a swim. There are tons of great restaurants to choose from. I know a lot of people in town, so I just wander around and talk to them. I have a few guitars in my home, so I tend to write a lot and work. It's kind of like being retired, except I still work.

You play a lot of different instruments. Do you have a favorite one?

I'm probably best at guitar, I like playing mandolin and I enjoy playing bass, but I'm not particularly great at those. Whenever I do recording sessions with people I play guitar, so I guess that's my main instrument.

How did the idea of the Music Festival come up? What inspired you to develop it?

Partly, it was just selfish. I wanted to play music in a warm weather situation in January. The feeling emerged as “Well, if we're going to do this, let's make money for local charities.”

What can we expect for this year's Festival?

Most musicians in the line-up are friends and acquaintances. We have two great Mexican bands like La Santa Cecilia and NorTec Collective. The idea is to keep it fairly spontaneous with people playing with each other and backing each other up. It's not meant to be a professional lasers-smoke-bomb-type show; it's homier. The shows at the Hotel California are very much low-key and fun and then for the town square shows everyone comes out and it's a great celebration.

Do you have any favorite moments of the past years?

I remember the first one very well because we didn’t know what to expect and a lot of people showed up. Last year Steve Wynn, who played at all four shows, will tell you that his highlight was playing with John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin. It's always been about the interaction of the people in the bands, the audience, the charities, everyone working together. For me it's a way to reach out in a way that I maybe don't do in my personal life.

Anything else you would like to tell Destino Magazine readers about the TS Music Festival?

I'm very excited; we have a great musical lineup. There will be a lot of people that have never been there and everyone is telling me that they’re super excited. I think it's going to be a very special year. *

ART & CULTURE TODOS SANTOS ART WALK

One of the cultural aspects to recover most quickly here in Todos Santos after the destruction of Hurricane Odile has been the historical Artist Community, continuing to attract tourists and art enthusiasts from all over the world. Most of the well-established galleries are once again open and functioning stronger than ever, and several new galleries have emerged for the holiday season. And now we’ve even seen the birth of the new ‘Camanita de Arte’ Art Walk. The event takes place on the first Friday of every month from 4pm to 7pm, and has already grown to include 15 participating galleries.

The tour also gives people the opportunity to explore some of the culinary excellence of this little Pueblo Magico. Attendants can kick off their Art Walk experience with a glass or taste of local Baja Wines at La Bodega de Todos Santos, located right in the middle of the downtown art scene. They’ll get the chance to learn about Mexico's emerging wine industry and begin their walk on the right foot, with vino in hand.

Art Walk attendees can also wrap up their evening with one of the many renowned dining options available, including The Todos Santos Inn, Casa Bonita, the legendary Hotel California, Tequila Sunrises, and the new La Taverna Dominique tucked quaintly in the garden atmosphere behind the recently opened Galleria Ezra Katz.

“We want to do it original and bigger each time,” says Cedric Volon, event founder and owner of Galeria La Sonrisa de la Muerte. “We want people from all over Baja to know about the art community in Todos Santos and to come visit the galleries for this special event!”

Reconstruction Grants The Los Cabos art scene continues to organize Music and Art Benefit events to support the reconstruction of the most devastated areas around Los Cabos. Reconstruction Grants are being given directly to individuals, families, and communities who experienced severe losses in Hurricane Odile. Applications for support are being accepted by the Grassroots Global Development Foundation, an international grant-making foundation that provides financial and strategic support to locally-led, community-based organizations who are serving women and children impacted by poverty. Applications are processed through approved community-based organizations working with the Cabo Hurricane Fund, served by Fundación Sarahuero and Hotel El Ganzo, Patrons of the Arts and leaders of positive change through the higher education of children and youth.

Why do I do what I do?

Regardless of where we are, it is only when we develop discernment from concentrating the mind that we will be able to understand consciousness. Once we make up our mind to do something good, we must focus and persevere until we succeed and feel happy. That sort of thinking is our own real consciousness. Whichever activity you may practice, vow to be a non violent, honest and truthful person, to keep a clear and sober mind, and to harm no one; by focusing on breathing, observing body sensations, finding stillness in everything we do makes any activity a meditation. To see things as they are, this is true wisdom.

When your mind wanders in thought, making it difficult to focus its concentration (an essential quality needed to achieve true insight and cultivate a peaceful mind) don’t worry – be kind to yourself and realize that each moment is just what it is – let it go without judgement; smile, come back to your breath, come back to your sensations, and...

Place your intention in your attention.

That which we pay attention to grows and manifests; that which we ignore diminishes and dies. Align your spine, relax your shoulders, soften your gaze and find stillness in whatever you are doing at this very moment.

Focus your mind by observing your breath. Is it deep? Is it shallow? Has it stopped? Control your desire to make a judgement about yourself or the other. When thoughts arise, observe them, then come back to observing your breath. Here is where life speaks to you. Release your desire to control what is happening. Allow life’s natural flow to show you the consequences of your actions. Your task is only to observe the sensations that arise in your body and how they affect your breath.

You will be amazed at how much wisdom and self-knowledge you get by doing only this. This is how we learn.

Why do I do what I do?

To ‘know thyself’ is the advice of the Sages. To live a life of morality, to do no harm, to be truthful, honest, peaceful, clear, and to cultivate a clean healthy body and mind form the foundation needed for the mind to be able to fully concentrate. The right kind of concentration allows for the right kind of wisdom: to see things as they are, to succeed in freeing ourselves from suffering and purifying the mind from negativity – this is meditation. The quality of my yoga practice is not measured by how I can reach my head to my knees, or by how long I can stay in a pose, but by how happy and peaceful I feel while I am doing whatever it is that I am doing.

This is the goal of a Yoga practice. To be happy.

Incense - Sacred Plant Helpers When the tomb of Tutankhamun was found, they made an amazing discovery. In the Valley of the Kings at Thebes, archaeologists found huge quantities of oils, perfumes, and – you guessed it – incense around his mummified body. Religious documents prove that they considered the scents to be divine grace.

Trading in incense materials comprised a major part of commerce along the Silk Road and other trade routes, one notably called the Incense Route. For many of the early years before Christ, frankincense was actually worth more than silver and gold’s value. Frankincense is now more commonly known because it was one of the gifts brought to baby Jesus in celebration of his birth. The three Wise men brought three gifts: Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh. The gifts of gold and frankincense were considered “fit for a King.” The myrrh, which is bittersweet, symbolized the new Messiah’s fate.

Incense use also has many sacred traditions that are still present today. The Native Americans are just one example of the many traditional cultures still using incense as part of their rituals, especially purification ceremonies. They have used their smudging techniques for thousands of years.

Smudging is the name given to the sacred smoke bowl blessing. This bowl consists of various herbs and resins. In the aspect of Smudging, the aromatic combinations of these materials are used to cleanse any negative energy, to heal the sick, to bless the masses, and to attract positive forces to the area.

Each of the various elements has a specific energy that is related or tied to it. These herbs and plants are also known as “Sacred Plant Helpers”.

Incense is used for a variety of purposes, including the ceremonies of all the main religions, to overcome bad smells, repel insects, spirituality, aromatherapy, meditation, and for simple pleasure.

The aromatic smell that burning incense releases stimulates the olfactory nerves. This stimulation is able to produce effects of various states such as physical, emotional, and psychological, based on the fragrance. Hence Aromatherapy. With the correctly scented incense, you can actually use its healing powers to reduce and calm anxiety, stress, and fear, to alleviate insomnia, and to accelerate healing. You can also help stimulate and renew energy, cleanse the atmosphere, and prepare for meditation and prayer.

A variety of materials have been used in making incense, but historically there has been a preference for using locally available ingredients.

CORONADO ISLAND This Island is located 7 miles northeast of the coast of the town of Loreto. It is a wildlife reserve where visitors may anchor, scuba and snorkel. While each transaction has its own characteristics, here's how it works in most cases and with our buyers at REmexico Real Estate Group....

Deposits: Once the buyer and seller have come to an agreement on price and terms in writing, we categorize the property as "Pending" and/or "Under Contract". The initial deposit is usually between 5-10% of the purchase price, or as had been written and agreed upon in the Offer to Purchase submitted by the buyer, and delivered to an escrow account within 5-7 days of acceptance.

Escrow: There are two commonly used escrow holders in Cabo. Stewart Title and Fidelity both have representatives locally and provide services for safe transfers of purchase or proceed funds for both buyer and seller. Each company, respectively, hold accounts in United States and Mexico so the principals/clients can determine which account best suits their needs. Our clients find piece of mind in using these well-respected escrow companies when purchasing a home and we do work hand in hand with the escrow companies on the closings of each deal.

Title and Closing Time Frames: As we've discussed before in the Destino Magazine Q&A, the two instruments to hold title depend on your citizenship and status within Mexico.

1. For nationals of Mexico, they may use traditional title with "Escritura". This process is a quicker process where titles can be drawn up in as little as 30 days and closing thereafter.

2. For foreigners, the "Fideicomiso" takes a bit longer to draw up within the banks. So, this makes the closing process more of a 60-90 day process, with most closings happening around the 90th day.

Notary and Closing: Once all paperwork, titles are ready for transfer, the buyers and sellers meet with their broker and attorney with a local notary to finalize the deal. At this point, funds are released and all legal documentation transfers are completed.
