LOS CABOS 101

LOS CABOS & South Baja

Los Cabos (the capes) is located in the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. In between you will find smaller towns and points of interest such as Santiago and Miraflores, located inland at the skirts of the Sierra de la Laguna, or Migriño and Pescadero which are located on the Pacific side, in between Cabo San Lucas and Todos Santos THE AQUARIUM OF THE WORLD. These are the words that the Jacques Cousteau used to describe the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this “trap” and either stayed in its warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool bottom of the two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez.

THE BAJA SUR LOOP Take a look at the Baja Sur map bellow; you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. Ongoing road improvements and new highway constructions are making road trips quicker and easier every year. The new highway from Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos is impressively well done, making it only a 45 minute drive. Cabo San Lucas Also just known as “Cabo,” is a tourist friendly town located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula that’s full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo arch. Cabo San Lucas has the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night. The Corridor The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 25 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities or at the Cabo Real arroyo for a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut). San José del Cabo Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district. From November through June, the popular Art Walk takes place every Thursday evening where galleries welcome

guests to sip some wine while they view their exhibits; however, the galleries are open year-round. San José del Cabo’s historical downtown also offers world-class restaurants from Mexican gourmet cuisine to authentic Thai food. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride and explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species. East Cape People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving and turtle nesting on the beach. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and folks who just want to get away from it all. Todos Santos Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the Pacific’s breezes. La Paz La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer. *

LOS CABOS 101

USEFUL INFORMATION Exchange rates - Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will most likely get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate.

IMPORTANT PHONE NUMBERS

ATMs - The easiest and most cost effective way to get pesos is not to bring dollars and exchange them, but simply to pull pesos out of an ATM after you arrive in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate) with reasonable fees. Examples include Banorte, Santander, Banamex, and HSBC. If you go to a non-bank ATM, you will pay higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing. Try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees. Cash or Card? - Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only places, so always ask beforehand and carry cash. Tipping - Standard tipping rates are about 15%. Buying groceries - San José has two major grocery stores; Wal-Mart and Mega. Mega is a higher-end option with more American products, but is slightly more expensive that Wal-Mart. San Lucas has a Wal-Mart and Costco. If you just need to grab something quickly, OXXO stores are small, reasonably priced convenient stores located all over town. Driving - Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating to some, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna or verde (green) which is regular and Premium or roja (red). Lleno (pronounced yeno) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos (less than a dollar) is customary. ALTO STOP

FISHING REPORT All that’s fishy from Lands End to La Paz by Gary Graham

Seasonal Fishing Chart:

BOATING & FISHING

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs. BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers and pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas, the area’s largest commercial marina, features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos, located in La Playita, just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina 8

Sport fishing flags commonly seen in Los Cabos:

in the area with 200 available slips for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing li-

cense, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early, and trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

More striped marlin are being spotted feeding on the surface every day, and anticipation for a slightly later than usual striped marlin season arriving in early February is high. The ever popular dorado continue to be crowd pleasers for most boats scoring anywhere from a few to more than a handful. Often a floating object will provide a cover for the dorado … sargasso grass or floating seaweed is their natural home and hiding place, but don’t overlook a log, dead seal, plastic garbage bag, bamboo beach mat or anything else. Most of the time these fish feed close to the surface and their vibrant blue and gold coloring streaking toward a lure or live bait is a visual sensation that will leave you shaking your head in amazement. Humpback whales, named because they have an obvious hump on their backs and for the way they curve their backs when diving, can be seen frolicking in the waters of the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez, usually pretty close to shore. There are only three places in the world the gray whale gives birth … and all three are in Baja. Then there are the largest animals living on this earth growing to over ninety feet in length … the blue whale. Anglers and others who are content with being observers will be pleased with all the options offered on the waters surrounding Baja's tip. Enjoy!

SURFING

Baja Sur has been a popular surfing destination since the ‘50s. The East Cape is popular for kite surfing and the Pacific coast has several surf breaks where you will find less crowds. SEASONS June through November The summer months are known to be the best as the Southern Hemisphere’s swells send great waves to the Pacific, Cabo San Lucas, San José and the East Cape. December through February East Cape and Costa Azul are on the flatter side. The Pacific can be good this time of year because it’s exposed to the west swell. March through May This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

KITE SURFING

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December.

STAND UP PADDLING

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just your paddle and your board. Stand up paddling is growing to be more popular each year and is available all around Los Cabos. It’s a great way to see marine life, to get a great workout and to enjoy nature. At Médano beach you can rent boards in several locations. Paddle along the rocks of Land’s End to make your way to Lover’s Beach and the Arch. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board. Tips! • Your feet should be parallel, about hip-width distance apart, centred between the board rails (edges). • Keep toes pointed forward, knees bent and your back straight. Balance with your hips and core. Keep your arms straight and twist from your torso as you paddle. Think of using your torso to paddle rather than your arms; you have more strength in the abdominal muscles than in your arms. Your gaze should be level at the horizon and avoid staring at your feet. • If you’re paddling on the right, your right hand is lower and on the paddle shaft. Your top left hand is on the top of the grip. The elbow (angle) of the paddle faces away from you. • Plant the paddle by pushing the blade all the way under the surface, pull it back to your ankle, then out of the water. To go in a reasonably straight line, paddle about 4 or 5 strokes on one side, then switch to the other. When you switch sides, you’ll reverse hand positions. • When you fall aim yourself to the side so you don’t fall the board.

SKATEBOARDING

Visit the Pescadero Skate Park located on km. 64 of HWY 19, in the town of El Pescadero. The park is surrounded by lush gardens, and the cost to enter this pro-park is $2.00 USD. www.DestinoMagazine.com | FEBRUARY 2015

LOS CABOS 101 ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES

Los Cabos offers entertainment for all ages and is an ideal destination for families. Blown Glass Factory Don’t miss this factory located in Cabo San Lucas where youngsters can watch the highlyskilled artisans perform the art of glass-blowing. Adults can shop for that one (or probably more than one) perfect piece to take home. Make sure you visit the factory before 2:00 pm in order to catch the show. Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks and eco-adventure companies in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, back-country ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Ask your concierge to setup your adventure. Swim with Dolphins Los Cabos has a few facilities where you and your kids can swim with trained dolphins. By visiting one of the dolphin centres you and your kids will experience a one-on-one connection that will be memorable. You will learn special hand signals and ways to communicate positive reinforcement to the dolphins. Swimming with dolphins is a very gratifying and joyful experience for people of all ages. Wet Fun Water Park Located about 20 minutes from San José, this water park has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms, a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps water on the bystanders bellow. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at km 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends. Whale Watching Whale watching in Los Cabos is an unforgettable experience for any age. During the months of December through March, it is not hard to find whales breaching just off the shore. Book a private charter or take one of the many whale watching tours available. Horse-back lessons at Cuadra San Francisco This world class equestrian centre was established in 1994 by Francisco J. Barrena M. and is home to about 50 horses. Each one has been trained by professionals to ensure safety and an enjoyable ride. The riding school’s speciality is high level dressage, which is an excellent way to perfect any riding discipline and to become an better rider overall. The staff can accommodate riders of any age and skill level. Cuadra San Francisco is located at km. 19.5 of the main highway between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.

ADVENTURE

Los Cabos offers a number of entertainment options for adventure seekers. From guided bicycle tours to a sunset horseback ride on the beach or a high-speed zipline across one of the many local canyons, pick an adventure that is right for you and get out there! Buggy, Atv, Or Bike Rentals There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid drivers’ license. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike, beach cruiser, or joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Just make sure to wear a helmet! Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Cactus-lovers may also want to check out the nearby cactus gardens Wirikuta, offering a large variety of cacti laid out in an artful outdoor setting. Parasailing, Bungee Jumping, and Ziplines Get ready to shout “Geronimo!” as you leap off a platform in one of the most extreme outings! Several local adventure-parks provide bungee jumping packages and high speed zipline canopy tours are offered in a number of local canyons. If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat!

LOS CABOS 101

Imagine floating in a turquoise bay with pink sand or riding some epic waves: every Baja beach offers something unique. Here is a list of the must-see beaches -- visit them all to decide which one is your dream beach!

Cabo San Lucas

Along the Corridor

If you’re looking for the action, here it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and family-friendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see.

LAS VIUDAS

José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Santa Maria provides no services and hardly any shade. You can rent umbrellas on the beach, but if you happen to have one, bring it anyway. Snorkelling gear will help you get the most of this beautiful beach!

Location:

San Jose del Cabo

MEDANO BEACH

Las Viudas (The Widows) beach is not visible from the road and is possibly the most private beach you will find on this list. What makes it unique are the rock formations which create small pools and coves where you can have a private and peaceful beach day. This beach is swimmable with caution but if you find your own pool you can avoid the waves. Turn right at Km. 12.5 of the corridor and follow the dirt road down to the beach. There is a sign that reads “Las Viudas” but slow down and keep your eyes peeled; the entrance may sneak up on you. You won’t find any services or vendors so bring all your beach essentials with you.

Tips:

CHILENO

Chileno is a very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newly-installed palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. This is the only beach with public restrooms and it has plenty of palapas for shade. Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. If you visit Chileno on a weekend, make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and, if you beat the crowds, you’ll be guaranteed a palapa to yourself for much-needed shade. Bring snorkelling gear!

Tips:

PALMILLA

Palmilla beach is known for its family-friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis.

Location: Location:

In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. This is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador.

Tips:

Be prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No, gracias.” Prices don’t vary much from one water sports rental place to another. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

LOVER’S BEACH

Getting there is an adventure in itself, due to the fact that it is reachable only by boat or kayak. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Prices are around $15.00 USD per person. Ask your captain to cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive, you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so swim on Lover’s Beach only. Land’s End beside the famous arch. This beach is accessible only by boat. There are a couple of vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services. A good idea is to spend the day at Medano Beach and take an hour or two to go to Lover’s Beach; this should be time enough to explore this natural wonderland.

Tips:

SANTA MARIA

Santa Maria offers a stunning horseshoe cove with coralcoloured sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. Travelling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San

Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at Km. 27. Follow

the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.

Tips:

COSTA AZUL

If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot you can find it here without driving out of town. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where the Cabo Surf Hotel and Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and stand-up paddle boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer, and in the winter this is a good spot for snorkelling and swimming. Exit at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge. Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers.

LOS CABOS 101 LA PLAYITA

La Playita (the little beach) is a long stretch of beach where you will often find locals fishing from the shore and families with children enjoying the beach-front playground. On the right end of La Playita you can find a roped-off swimming area just outside the entrance to the beautiful Puerto Los Cabos 500-slip marina. To the left is the natural open beach where you can swim, skim-board and enjoy a peaceful beach day away from the crowds. Follow the signs to La Playita/ Puerto Los Cabos from Boulevard Mijares in downtown San José del Cabo (across from the fire department). You will find new and well-maintained bathrooms, palapas and fishing charters. There are no food services directly on the beach, but several casual restaurants dot the surrounding area.

Location: Tips:

On the Pacific CERRITOS

Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day on the beach or, if you want to be active, you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop.

Location: This bay lies about 30 minutes

from the boardwalk in La Paz. Simply follow the main drag along the boardwalk, then through Costa Baja Golf Course and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed. There are palapas, but not many. Kayaks and snorkel gear are offered.

Tips:

Loreto

ISLA CORONADO

A wildlife reserve where visitors may anchor, snorkel, scuba and camp lies on this island. The panga ride usually includes a cruise around the island where it’s very common to see sea lions, seals and even sea otters. The only swimmable beach on the island has pristine white sand and shallow crystal clear turquoise water, which creates ideal snorkelling conditions. Coronado Island is the ideal place for an adventure or to simply immerse yourself in nature and relax.

Location: Tips:

Location:

Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area. Tips: Lounge chairs, restrooms, food and drinks are available at The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant.

About 7 miles or 30 minutes northeast of Loreto by boat. To get to Coronado Island you must take a boat or a panga. You will find pangas in Loreto’s Marina which you can hire. The best option is to ask your concierge to arrange this for you. There are no services or restaurants on the beach, but there are several large palapas with tables and benches and an eco-restroom. Bring hiking shoes if you plan to explore the area. Snorkelling gear is a plus!

La Paz

BALANDRA

Balandra is a stunning bay that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist-high, crystal clear water with shades of turquoise blue. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock” as well as other interesting rock formations. Pictures just don’t do it justice. You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra!

Whale Migration

February 13 ~ San José del Cabo Jazz Festival - The 2nd Annual San Jose Jazz Festival will once again be held at Plaza del Pescador in the hotel zone, where the free-admission event made its grand debut last year. The SJDC Jazz Fest also entertained hundreds of local jazz, blues, jazz fusion and flamenco music enthusiasts. The first performances begin at 6:00 p.m. with Guillermo Ruiz, Jorge Rodriguez, and Javier Cantu playing traditional jazz sung in Spanish. Local popular favorite Daline Jones will sing her stylish brand of jazz fusion in English, accompanied by her talented band mates Diego Ramirez and Joaquin Gonzalez. Groups perform at every top of the hour starting at 6:00 p.m., and closing at 11:00 p.m. For a complete program please visit www.sanjosejazzweekend.com/Joomla/ or call (624) 154-8510.

February 18 ~ Ash Wednesday - Both Historic Catholic Churches in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo will offer Ash Wednesday services, which is the first day of Lent and this year falls on February 18, 2015. Ash Wednesday is a custom that dates back to the time of the Ninevites, who did penance in sackcloth and ashes. The mark on foreheads with ashes symbolizes that “man is dust and unto dust we shall return,” a Catholic Church custom which recognizes that life passes away in this world, and which helps believers develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice.

Starting in mid-month October, one of the greatest migrations on the planet occurs along the Pacific Coast of North America as the magnificent Pacific Gray Whales migrate from the frozen Arctic, all the way to the isolated lagoons on the Pacific Coast of Baja California, Mexico. Gray whales migrate farther than any whale — or any mammal. Their 18,000-kilometer round trip (11,200 miles) takes them from the Bering Sea down the Pacific Coast of North America to Baja California and back to the Arctic. Pregnant females are in a hurry to get to Mexico, so they arrive first. When January comes, more gray whales arrive in the warm lagoons of the Gulf of California and begin to give birth to their young. By March, mother and baby pairs dominate the lagoons and it’s time for males and newly-pregnant females to start their journey north. New mothers are doing “spring training” for the babies so they’ll be ready for their own first migration; they swim with babies against the currents near the mouth of the lagoon, helping them build strength and endurance. In April, most of the adults and older juveniles are heading north while the first northbound whales may already have reached Alaska. The arctic sea ice has melted and open seas mean huge food supplies are again available, but mothers and babies stay longer in the Mexican lagoons. In Los Cabos, keep your eyes pealed since the whales may travel so close to the coast that people can see them, of course, those who venture for a close encounter will find that it’s quite common for mother whales to bring their babies right up to the boat for a closer look. Book one of the many tour options available in order to take a close look at these gentile giants of the sea.

February 21 - 28 February 21-28 marks the 17th annual Festival De Arte Todos Santos. This week-long celebration of Mexican culture is a diverse and engaging event that features live music, dance and theater performances, painting and drawing exhibitions, lectures on local environmental and social issues, piano and poetry recitals, and more. The festival takes place in the town plaza and Teatro Marquez de Leon. Artisans from different parts of Mexico also set up shop daily next to the church to sell their crafts, and several of the downtown galleries hold special events in conjunction with the festival. So, show your support and come explore the history of this Pueblo Magico’s rich artistic community.

GOLFING LOS CABOS

by Fernando Rodríguez

It took all of 16 years, after the Mexican government began its infrastructure development of Cabo San Lucas in 1974, to turn the small fishing village into the second most popular tourist destination in Mexico. It was 1990 when legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus helped create the golfing boom that Los Cabos currently enjoys. Jack’s great course designs at Palmilla, Cabo del Sol and El Dorado led to other well-known golfers creating beautifully-crafted layouts of their own. Greg Norman, Gary Player, Tom Weiskopf and Davis Love III were the next prominent golf pros to arrive in Los Cabos and attach their names to courses of their distinct design. Three local courses have been recognized among the world’s Top 100 Golf Courses. Two of them, Cabo del Sol’s Ocean Course, and Palmilla, are of Jack Nicklaus design, whose focus on the region gave credence to Southern Baja California's perfect climate and wonderful landscape for the spectacular game of golf.

Located just north of Cabo San Lucas is the gorgeous, challenging linksstyle Davis Love III-designed Diamante Dunes course, which is ranked 52nd in the Top 100 World List. This course's rolling desert layout features spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, with the Sierra de la Laguna mountains and the El Faro lighthouse visible in the distance. Diamante Dunes has recently been joined by the neighbouring Tiger Woods-designed course El Cardonal. While neither course is open to the public, rounds can be arranged for those with an interest in ownership opportunities at the much-anticipated Pacific Ocean-side development. Diamante's El Cardonal golf course showcased the grand opening ceremony with none other than the world's most famous championship golfer that designed the course himself, Tiger Woods. ''I set up the golf strategy to make golfers think and make choices,'' said the affable Woods at the grandiose event attended by thousands of invited guests and local Cabo San Lucas dignitaries. ''Regardless of your handicap, there are going to be different ways to play every hole. Angles of approach are going to be very important and will dictate the type of shots you should consider. You must be willing to weigh 20

risks and make smart choices. Proper strategy will provide the best opportunity to score. The biggest compliment I can receive after you play my course is that you want to play it again." According to Woods, El Cardonal, "Will remind golfers of the old-style California courses that I grew up playing." It is Woods vision that the course will challenge good players while remaining enjoyable for players of every skill level. Quivira Golf Club is a Jack Nicklaus designed course that was built atop the Pacific

cliffs on 1,850 acres of a planned gated community by resort developer, and avid golfer, Ernesto Coppel. The course features huge Sea of Cortez sandy dunes, and rolling desert landscape foothills. ''We tried to create some excitement on the mountain and in the dunes'' said the ''Golden Bear'' Nicklaus at the course's grand opening. ''I believe we've created a golf course that plays as spectacular as it looks.'' The crashing waves below, and rising holes above, are proof that the challenging course is definitely one of the newest marvels in the fabulous list of golf courses that make Los Cabos. The club house is open to the public.

Just outside of Cabo San Lucas is the Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol, which is considered a true masterwork by designer Jack Nicklaus. Over the history of its existence, the Cabo del Sol course has been on several occasions ranked as one of the Top 100 courses in the world by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest. Jack Nicklaus himself once declared his Cabo del Sol course to be "the best golf property I’ve ever seen." The Cabo del Sol course is considered first-class in every detail, with dramatic desert vistas, mountain terrain, and ocean views. The course plays long at 7,075 yards, and is resplendent with plenty of elevation changes and greens that have challenged both high and low handicappers. Neighbouring the Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol you can find the intriguing Desert Course designed by Tom Weiskopf’s. The course offers layout plays from five sets of tees that range from 5,300 to 7,100 yards in length. The course provides a unique challenge for players of every skill level as Weiskopf’s design tests golfers through terrain that snakes its way through canyons, washes, and arroyos. There is water in play that exists in the forms of waterfalls and a few lakes. There are also plenty of uneven stances caused by the frequent changes in elevation.

conscious players. There is only one major water hazard and the course is mostly flat with narrow fairways, moderate bunkers, and views that afford visitors glimpses towards the Sea of Cortez and Sierra de la Laguna mountains. Purchased by the Mayan Resorts Group in 2004, Punta Sur is currently open to Grand Mayan hotel guests, as well as the general public. Golf gear and rentals are available at the pro shop. Club Campestre, which opened in 2007, is yet another course designed by Jack "The Golden Bear" Nicklaus. Campestre is a 6,966yard layout that is nestled within the desert foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna’s natural beauty. Like other Nicklaus-designed courses, Club Campestre has fairways that are considered quite unforgiving, as well as dramatic elevation changes, and what some have properly referred to as "diabolical greens". The coastal grass provides for consistently good lies, while the putts at Campestre have proven to be most difficult.

In between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo you'll find Cabo Real, the only course in the Los Cabos area to have hosted two PGA Senior Grand Slam Events. It features a gorgeous start of lush fairways, swaying palm trees, towering cactus plants and the typically alluring views of the Sea of Cortez. The Robert Trent Jones II design plays 7,037 yards from the black tees and is highly regarded as a tough loop for both high and low handicap golfers. The front nine is the first brutal test of golf skills thanks to some par fives that are stretched out over the desert wilderness. The back nine, eases off the course difficulty, and actually gets a bit easier in comparison to its challenging start. Further down the tourist corridor are the two private courses El Dorado and Querencia. Mr. Nicklaus personally spent many hours walking the rugged coastline, quiet desert foothills and shaded canyons of El Dorado, envisioning a course that blends the natural landscape. The result is a golf course that links the drama of the coast to the desert in a new translation of golf’s great architectural traditions. El Dorado is a stunning and memorable golf course imbued with a friendly casual ambiance. Querencia, Tom Fazio´s first project in Mexico, is a private course ranked as the number one golf course in the Country by Golfweek magazine. It’s 18 holes carve deep arroyos and rest atop arid plateaus with stunning views of the Sea of Cortez. Harmonious transitions from holeto-hole, subtle breaks, contoured fairways, and uniquely shaped bunkers are what characterise this daunting yet enchanting course. The Los Cabos golf staple Palmilla is considered the crown jewel of courses designed by Jack Nicklaus. The landscape and Sea of Cortez views at Palmilla are truly magnificent. There are 27 holes in all, which stretch over three nine-hole courses: The Ocean Course, the Mountain Course, and the Arroyo Course. The Ocean Course is the most visually breathtaking of the three. There are five sets of tee boxes at the courses, catering to low and high handicappers alike. Punta Sur Golf Course, which opened in 1987, is a body of green landscaping which holds the special distinction as the oldest golf course in Cabo. Punta Sur is still a local favourite whose 3,153-yard 9-hole layout is mostly flat, but is very appealing to both beginner and budget-

In the quiet town of La Playita, just east of San José del Cabo, is Puerto Los Cabos, a course that features a nine-hole layout designed by Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus. The first nine holes, Mission Course, was the brain-child of two-time Majors champion, Greg "The Great White Shark" Norman. The back nine, Ocean Course, was orchestrated by Nicklaus. The two contrasting courses are expected to eventually reach an expansion that will create separate 18-hole styles that could prove to be equally challenging. The highlight of Norman’s Mission Course is the breathtaking views from the 6th hole tee box. The Ocean Course back nine contains the longest par of all of the golf courses in town, a 498-yard 16th hole. Every April, Los Fundadores Beach Club hosts their Puerto Los Cabos Golf Club "Chupacabra Open" night golf tournament. The seminocturnal event starts at 7:00 p.m. and finishes at 11:30 p.m. The first annual tournament was limited to the first 18 teams (36 participants) who signed up on a first-come, first-serve basis. * www.DestinoMagazine.com | FEBRUARY 2015

HEALTHY LIVING

by yeye

Yoga “Occasionally, [I] lose my temper. If someone is never lose temper then perhaps that may come from outer space, real strange. The enlightenment not depend on rank, it depends on practice.” Dalai Lama

What do you do when you lose your temper? Breathe?

Intelligence for the new Millennium “I meditate a lot. That’s a huge tool in trying to calm myself, get away from the crazy circus of it all, have a focused mind as well as be a kinder, considerate person in the world.” Benedict Cumberbatch

In this new Millennium, peace is at the core of a healthy lifestyle design. A clean Biosphere, water projects, music and art, overfishing awareness, living coral reefs, resettling of the forests, time and space travelling, food and nutrition, mindful economy, and the investigation of healthy minds are the future. The evolved individual is consciously reclaiming the right and responsibility to be co-creator of reality. Scientists, magnates, teachers, musicians, artists, writers, athletes, filmmakers, successful entrepreneurs are announcing the need to ‘awaken consciousness,’ because evidently the intelligence needed to create the XXI Century is not only the smart kind, but a conscious intelligence, the kind of intelligence that can only flourish in equanimous and peaceful minds. To be aware, to activate conscious intelligence, to cultivate a pure and calm mind can be achieved through the practice of meditation. An explosion of new research indicates that meditation can physically change the brain in astonishing ways and this knowledge has started to push into mainstream. Several studies suggest that these changes through meditation can make you happier, less stressed - even nicer to other people. It can help you control your eating habits and even reduce chronic pain, all the while without taking prescription medication. Physicians have increasingly started prescribing meditation instead of pills to benefit their patients. A Harvard Medical School report released in 2014 found that more than 6 million Americans had been recommended meditation and other mindbody therapies by conventional health care providers. Meditation is time travelling. Travelling through Baja, we invite you to slow down and embrace natural time. Breathe our clean air, listen to our ocean, relax and detoxify, observe while you take your vitamins from the sun. Align your posture, enjoy stillness, reflect about who you are, and why you are here. If it is true that we see things not as they are but as we are, what else is there more important then, than foreseeing the consequences of being. Be inspired. * 24

It is true that confrontation sometimes is needed when injustice is being served, but also true is that when we get mad, the chemistry in our body changes and literally acts like poison. Have you noticed how ill you feel after a temper tantrum? What about the relationships broken by it? Anger is a natural human emotion. We all feel it at least once in a lifetime. As with any other emotion, we are at the mercy of the sensations it creates in our body, unless we are alert to not allow our emotions rule our judgement. Careful examination of our breath and our volition, helps purify our thoughts before action is taken. Easier said than done? Yoga is the practice to master the mind. A strong determination is needed. Next time mindfulness is lost, I am strongly determined to break the negative habit patterns of my mind. This is adhiṭṭhāna. The practice is to breathe freely while observing body sensations, without reacting to them. “Keep your temper,” said the Caterpillar. And do no harm. Practice the cooling breath

Sheetali and sheetkari pranayama are two cooling breathing exercises that can fade away anger. To practice sheetali pranayama, sit comfortably. Close your eyes and curl your tongue into a tube. Slowly inhale through your tongue. Notice the coolness of the breath. Close your mouth and slowly exhale through your nose. Repeat this about 12 times. If you can’t curl your tongue, you can practice sheetkari pranayama: lightly close your teeth and press your tongue against the back of your teeth. Open your lips and inhale through your teeth, which has a similar cooling effect. Close your mouth and exhale through your nose. Repeat about 12 times. *

Fitness “The most important decision you make is to be in a good mood.” Voltaire

The skin is our largest organ, and sweat is one of the major elimination channels for toxins. A good Detox plan works best when it includes a balanced fitness experience. To detox and cleanse the body, mind, and spirit through juice fasting, plant-based foods, and practicing a holistic lifestyle proves to be a very successful choice to stay fit. A wholesome exercise program, in any style, is designed to stimulate the lymph system, and flush toxins out of the body. You just have to sweat. Baja is the land of wellness. The choices for rejuvenation, relaxation and well being are endless and customized to your most intimate needs. Whether you chose to complement your vacation visiting one of our fitness clubs in town, committing to a Beach Camp adventure, tour our Golf courses, book a private yoga session, or fully dedicate all your energy to experience Baja holistic lifestyle in retreat, we guarantee you will travel back home with an open and healthy heart, inspired to inspire your world. Organic NUTRITION

A portobello mushroom with “blue cheese” made from cashews, an avocado puree with wakame and olives wrapped in nori, or the classic Mexican carrots-cucumber salad with lemon, salt, and cayenne pepper, are just some examples of how exquisite eating Raw can be. A raw diet mostly consists of fruits, veggies, grains, seeds, nuts, and beans - raw meaning they haven’t been heated above a certain temperature, usually somewhere between 104 and 118 degrees. People that live by a raw diet report feeling better than ever, enjoy increased energy, and not only think they stop aging, they declare feeling as if they were actually growing younger. True is that plant-based diets greatly reduce the risk of chronic diseases and conditions, but because some nutrients (like lycopene in tomatoes and carotene in carrots) are better absorbed after they’ve been heated, specialists in nutritional medicine from different traditions recommend eating a mix of cooked and uncooked produce. As with everything in life, exercise your freedom to choose what serves your wellbeing, and in wisdom remember, we are all different, therefore it is very important that you listen and honour how you feel. SUPER FOOD PACKED RAW VEGAN CARROT CAKE RECIPE Ingredients: - 2 cups almonds - 1/12 cups pitted soft dates - 2 cups raisins - 4 cups carrot pulp - 1 tablespoon cinnamon - 1 ½ tablespoons fresh ground nutmeg - 1 teaspoon cardamom - 1 tablespoon lemon zest - 1 tablespoon orange zest - Pinch sea salt - ½ Cup chopped walnuts (optional) Lemon Frosting (to top the vegan carrot cake recipe) - 1 ½ cups whole raw cashews - 1 cup honey - 1 tablespoon maca - 1 cup dried coconut - 1 cup orange juice - 1 tablespoon lemon juice - 1 tablespoon lemon Zest - 1 tablespoon vanilla

Cake batter preparation: - Soak the raisins and the dates, in separate bowls each in 1 ½ cup water for 5-10 minutes to soften. - Drain the soak water and set aside. Using a juicer, juice about 20 carrots in order to acquire the 4 cups of carrot pulp needed and drink the carrot juice ? Grind the almonds into a fine mill. - Add the dates and one cup of the raisins and grind until you have a smooth paste. In a large bowl, mix with the carrot pulp, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, lemon zest, orange zest, sea salt and walnuts, and the remaining one-cup of raisins. Frosting preparation: - Soak the cashews in 2 cups fresh water for 30 minutes. - Drain and rinse. In a food processor or a blender, grind the dried coconut into a powder and set aside. Blend the cashews; honey and ½ cup of the date soak water, orange juice, lemon juice, lemon zest, and vanilla until smooth. - Add a touch more of the date soak water if necessary to aid in blending. - Add powdered coconut and blend well. It may be necessary to help the blending along by scraping the sides of the blender with a rubber spatula and continue to blend. Allow to stand in the refrigerator if necessary to thicken.

To layer the cake: - Split the cake batter in half. Line a serving platter with waxed paper. - Press half of the dough into an even circle. Slip pressed dough on waxed paper off the platter. Press the remaining dough directly on the platter into an even circle for the bottom layer spread just less than half of the frosting on the bottom layer leaving a 1-inch border. - Delicately flip over the layer on the waxed paper onto the frosted layer. Re-shape any mishaps and smooth the sides. - Spoon the remaining frosting on top of the cake and spread evenly over the top and sides. If you wish, this cake can be prepared into one layer. - Press the cake dough into an even circle on a serving platter, and frost evenly. For best results, allow chilling and setting in the fridge for one hour or more. Stencils can be used to create designs. - Cut starts, hearts, and spirals out of cardboard and lay on the cake before sifting, or sprinkle with ground almonds and cinnamon. Golf in Loreto

"A bad attitude is worse than a bad swing." - Payne Stewart

A story says that Jesus and Moses where playing golf together one day. Moses teed off first, the ball flew straight over the fairway, landed in the green and rolled to within a couple feet of the hole. "Great approach Moses." Jesus took a few practice swings, then looked up to the heavens and let loose on his ball. The ball flew off into the rough. Just then, a squirrel jumped over, grabbed the ball in his mouth and started running across the fairway. An eagle swooped down and grabbed the squirrel in its talons, but before it could get too far, a bolt of lightning struck the bird. The ball fell and a sudden gust of wind dropped it directly into the hole! Moses glared at Jesus and said: "Hey, are you here to play golf or just mess around?" Baja gives you the opportunity to do both. Famous for attracting classic icons - such as Tiger Woods, who by the way chose Los Cabos to design his first golf course and presents it to the world in 2015, and Jack Niklaus who welcomed this same year by celebrating the opening of yet another of his Cabo grand golf courses - Baja peninsula is staged for a new Golf era, it is an invitation to continue playing the Sport with the traditional integrity for which Golf transcends as a practice for the Masters, a Zen quality character that is naturally inspired by the grandiosity and the beauty of this land. Baja Golf Courses are designed by champions, still, as in paradise, everyone can play. Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto is sprucing up their already impressive resort with plans for the new 7,400-yard Danzante Bay Golf Course that will overlook the breathtaking Danzante Bay and the Sea of Cortez. Heading the project is world-renowned golf architect, Rees Jones, who has designed or redesigned over 170 golf courses in his career. The main goal is to offer a challenging, yet friendly course that works with the natural beauty and serenity of the surrounding environment. Jones, who is a noted environmentalist, pushes the limits when it comes to environmentally friendly golf courses. According to Jones, “this land is so good it tells us what to do. The holes fit the land naturally.” Owen Perry, co-owner of Villa Group Resorts, has also emphasized the importance of creating an environmentally friendly course and it could be one of the many reasons Villa Group decided to work with Jones on the project. The 18-hole Danzante Bay Golf Course, opening in October 2015, will feature an 18-hole putting course, designed intentionally for family oriented activities, a pro-shop, where patrons can rent clubs and golf-carts or receive lessons from professional 26

golf instructors, and a state-of-theart practice facility, where golfers can practice some shots before hitting the course. A plethora of settings have been planned, including valleys, arroyos, foothills and dunes, as well as a lake, which will be located in the middle of the course, between holes 10 and 11. However, Jones assures that the amazing views from hole 13 will make it “one of the most spectacular par 3 holes in golf.”

Loreto Bay Golf Course is considered to be one of the most beautiful and challenging courses, originally designed by landscape architects, Mario Schjetnan and Pedro Guereca, Loreto Bay Golf Course blends in harmoniously with Baja nature´s elements like the majestic Sierra La Giganta, Punta Nopoló, the Sea of Cortez, the impressive desert

and creatively designed lakes form part of the magnificent surrounding ecosystem where we all can enjoy a course with a rich habitat of wild life. Furthermore, it 9was possible to intertwine obstacles around estuaries and mangroves home. With 18 holes par 72 surrounded by beautiful landscapes, the course has been recently renovated by the 2001 British Open champion, David Duval. Each and every hole has been extensively thought out to create the perfect golfing experience. This course offers stunning views which get better as soon as you make your way through it, the spectacular hole 15 which crosses the tranquil lagoon, offers a challenge that no golfing enthusiast can leave behind. IMAGINE YOU LIVE AND GOLF HERE! A sneak peek into home ownership in Golf Communities in Los Cabos by Blake Harrington

So much of the beauty of Los Cabos is the fun under the sun and the limitless possibilities of activities you can enjoy in the same day. Golf, without a doubt, is one of Cabo’s most desired activity when visiting either short or long term. There is proof of this demand in the continuing development of some incredible private, semi-private, and public golf courses and communities. As a Los Cabos resident and avid golfer, I’ve had the pleasure to be able to tour each of these properties in person, experience the amenities, and talk with members and staff. Golf is not just a game, it’s an experience. I’ve outlined some of Los Cabos’ most attractive and successful developments to further educate our Destino Magazine readership on the amenities of each property, the differences between them, and what each community offers its prospective real estate buyers. There is truly something for every budget and every level of golfer. Querencia – San José del Cabo This private club and residential community, nestled into the mountains in the San José Corridor above Cabo Surf Hotel, boasts a Tom Fazio 18 hole golf course and treats each member with luxury and privacy at each step of the experience. “The Q” provides its residents with a 5 star 58,000 sq ft Club House complete with Valet parking, Spa, Golf Shop, Infinity Pool with Cabanas, fitness center with yoga pavilion, and multiple dining options. Querencia has recently brought some new product on the real estate market including their Las Verandas condos which are 2,3, and 4 bedrooms starting at $695,000. Their Club Villas, both new and re-sale, are in the low $2 million range and offer views east and of the golf

course. And, of course, you can buy your own lot and build a custom home. Quivira – Pacific Side/Cabo San Lucas With dramatic views and cliffside golf holes, this is Jack Nicklaus’ newest course design in Los Cabos. From the developers at Copalla and Pueblo Bonito comes Quivira, a unique experience for those avid golfers. This resort-style course has incredible views at each hole and gives the golfer an experience unlike any other. As a brand new project, most of Quivira’s properties are being sold pre-construction and the first are set for delivery in June of 2015. For buyers, they offer many different options that depend on budget and what each specific buyer may desire. One of the reasons for Quivira’s strong start is their offering of developer financing to qualified prospective buyers. These terms can differ depending on the down payment and length of loan terms. Considering the lack of mortgage lending in Mexico from American banks, developer financing is a great option for those interested in financing their vacation home. With starting prices in the low $400s, there’s a product for just about any budget. El Dorado – Corridor Where the rich and famous live and play, El Dorado, is home to such celebrities as George Clooney, Cindy Crawford, and many other A-listers from Hollywood as well as a variety of businessmen and athletes. As a fully private club, El Dorado gives its homeowners and members an exciting, fun experience with a casual atmosphere amidst world-class amenities. Price per square foot, El Dorado is the most expensive community to live in Los Cabos. Considering your affluent neighbors, you could find yourself with a price tag of $10,000,000 for an oceanfront villa or you can start at a little less at of an entry point of around $3,500,000 for an ocean view townhome/villa.

Puerto Los Cabos – San José del Cabo Grupo Questro’s latest project in Los Cabos boasts a new marina for all sizes of boats and yachts, numerous restaurants and hotels, and an 18 hole championship composite (Nicklaus/ Norman) golf course. Puerto Los Cabos has changed the face of San José del Cabo and brought top brands like Ritz-Carleton, JW Marriott, and their own El Ganzo Boutique Hotel. Puerto Los Cabos offers a variety of real estate products, starting in the mid $700s for fairway townhomes and all the way up to beachfront estates around $7,000,0000. PLC has a lot of properties available and also offers ocean view lots for sale to build your custom home. Club Campestre – San José del Cabo When you arrive to Cabo, the first golf course you see from the toll road highway from the airport is Club Campestre. Undulating greens, pristine fairways, and a desert landscape give the golfer a fun and enjoyable experience. What’s special and unique about Club Campestre are some of the amenities they offer their owners and members; a stunning beach club just across the highway with a full service restaurant and beautiful pool. They also offer prospective buyers a full golf club membership with a purchase of a real estate product. Club Campestre has constantly offered new product and adjusted well to the market. Their full-ownership Pueblo Campestre starts at as little as $237,000 and their Hacienda Campestre fairway homes start at around $450,000, depending on floor plan and finishes. You can also buy a custom home lot and build your dream home, all within the gates of Club Campestre. Diamante – Pacific Side/Cabo San Lucas On the Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas, Diamante has continued to grow at a rapid pace. Most recently was the big news of the opening of Tiger Wood’s first golf course in Mexico, El Cardonal. This championship course is the second 18 hole golf course that Diamante has on property, the “Dunes Course.“ With an emphasis on the family experience, Diamante has built an amazing lagoon with a beach club, SUP classes, kayaking, and a brand new fitness center. Diamante’s real estate portfolio is expanding with many options at many different prices. Originally, they had offered custom ocean view homes at around $2,500,000, however, come Spring 2015 they will be introducing new products including townhomes, condos, and villas at under $1,000,000. Where do you imagine yourself living? *

What is the closing process when purchasing a home in Los Cabos?

A:

At REmexico Real Estate, we understand that this process may be a bit confusing. However, that is why we are here! We take pride in our knowledge of the process and in assisting our clients through the closing process smoothly. Send us your Los Cabos real estate questions to: blake@caborealestate.com

Find paradise an address.

There are thousands of Americans, Canadians, and/or Ex-Pats that reside in Los Cabos full time in their deeded full ownership property. The process of closing a deal on your next Baja dream home has continually improved over the years. While each transaction has its own characteristics, here's how it works in most cases and with our buyers at REmexico Real Estate Group.... Deposits: Once the buyer and seller have come to an agreement on price and terms in writing, we categorize the property as "Pending" and/or "Under Contract". The initial deposit is usually between 5-10% of the purchase price, or as had been written and agreed upon in the Offer to Purchase submitted by the buyer, and delivered to an escrow account within 5-7 days of acceptance. Escrow: There are two commonly used escrow holders in Cabo. Stewart Title and Fidelity both have representatives locally and provide services for safe transfers of purchase or proceed funds for both buyer and seller. Each company, respectively, hold accounts in United States and Mexico so the principals/clients can determine which account best suits their needs. Our clients find piece of mind in using these well-respected escrow companies when purchasing a home and we do work hand in hand with the escrow companies on the closings of each deal. Title and Closing Time Frames: As we've discussed before in the Destino Magazine Q&A, the two instruments to hold title depend on your citizenship and status within Mexico. 1. For nationals of Mexico, they may use traditional title with "Escritura". This process is a quicker process where titles can be drawn up in as little as 30 days and closing thereafter. 2. For foreigners, the "Fideicomiso" takes a bit longer to draw up within the banks. So, this makes the closing process more of a 60-90 day process, with most closings happening around the 90th day. Notary and Closing: Once all paperwork, titles are ready for transfer, the buyers and sellers meet with their broker and attorney with a local notary to finalize the deal. At this point, funds are released and all legal documentation transfers are completed.
