LOS CABOS 101
LOS CABOS & South Baja
Los Cabos (the capes) is located in the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. In between you will find smaller towns and points of interest such as Santiago and Miraflores, located inland at the skirts of the Sierra de la Laguna, or Migriño and Pescadero which are located on the Pacific side, in between Cabo San Lucas and Todos Santos THE AQUARIUM OF THE WORLD. These are the words that Jacques Cousteau used to describe the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this “trap” and either stayed in its warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool bottom of the two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez.
THE BAJA SUR LOOP Take a look at the Baja Sur map below; you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. Ongoing road improvements and new highway constructions are making road trips quicker and easier every year. The new highway from Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos is impressively well done, making it only a 45 minute drive. Cabo San Lucas Also just known as “Cabo,” is a tourist friendly town located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula that’s full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo arch. Cabo San Lucas has the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night. The Corridor The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 25 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities or at the Cabo Real arroyo for a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut). San José del Cabo Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district. From November through June, the popular Art Walk takes place every Thursday evening where galleries welcome
guests to sip some wine while they view their exhibits; however, the galleries are open year-round. San José del Cabo’s historical downtown also offers world-class restaurants from Mexican gourmet cuisine to authentic Thai food. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride and explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species. East Cape People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving and turtle nesting on the beach. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and folks who just want to get away from it all. Todos Santos Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the Pacific’s breezes. La Paz La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer. *

FISHING REPORT All that’s fishy from Lands End to La Paz by Gary Graham
Seasonal Fishing Chart:
BOATING & FISHING
With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs. BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers and pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas, the area’s largest commercial marina, features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos, located in La Playita, just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina 4
Sport fishing flags commonly seen in Los Cabos:
in the area with 200 available slips for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing li-
cense, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early, and trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.
If you are confused about what month it is … you are in good company. The entire tip of the Baja Peninsula is shaking its head over the odd weather and the fishing accompanying it, but all are hoping it is setting the stage for an interesting June. In Cabo, the striped marlin arrived and the fleet collectively breathed a sigh of relief as a few boats began recording single, and in some cases multiple, releases a day. More and more and more are being spotted but horrors of horrors -- they won't bite. It seems they are all filling up on squid, thank you very much! However, continuing on with the weirdness of it all, the yellowtail that had been frustratingly scarce suddenly appeared when the water on the Pacific side cooled off. The dorado and tuna have remained among the missing, leaving it to the skipjack, bonito and roosterfish to round out the Cabo Catch list. In San Jose, the striped marlin were taunting while a smattering of yellowfin tuna up to the 40-pound class range, were taken in addition to a few wahoo. While the inshore sputtered along with smallish rooster fish, jack crevalle as large as 25 pounds and a few sierra appeared on the scene as their season comes to a close. East Cape's striped marlin, along with dorado and an occasional wahoo, seem to be on the chew not far offshore from La Ribera. Along the shore, pompano and roosterfish are the best bets. Another attraction from the shore has been the ladyfish that, although much smaller, have the heart of a tarpon and are a blast on light tackle, leaping several times their length into the air when hooked. The summer at Los Arenas is settling in nicely in spite of some late north winds. Large roosterfish are center stage as the season gets rolling, with dorado, yellowfin tuna and wahoo gathering in the wings for a grand entrance as conditions improve. Everyone from La Paz to Land’s End is gearing up … eager for a “fishy” summer. *

SNORKELLING & SCUBA DIVING
Prepare yourself for an incredible show of nature as you swim side by side with colourful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, sea turtles and more. The Sea of Cortez or the “Aquarium of the World” offers many opportunities to experience incredible underwater wildlife.
SCUBA DIVING DESTINATIONS Note: travel time is from the Cabo San Lucas marina. Land’s End Intermediate-Advanced - 50’-60’ Five minutes by boat and you can share the water with sea lions and moray eels, with a sunken boat visible in the Falls. Sand Falls Beginners - Advanced - 30’-100’ Steep sand banks drop sharply into a canyon filled with tropical fish. The canyon runs from the depths of the Cabo San Lucas bay to within 30 feet of the beach. Pelican Rock Beginners - 25’-80’ This large rock attracts many tropical fish and is only five minutes from shore. Neptune’s Finger Advanced - 80’-100’ A spectacular canyon wall dive. Cabeza de Ballena Beginners - 20’-40’ A 25-minute boat ride leads to a dive through large boulders with many fish. Santa María Cave Beginners - 20’-40’ Reachable from the shore or a 35-minute boat ride, the entrance to Santa Maria canyon has a huge variety of fish which feed right from your hand. Chileno Beginners - 30’-70’ This location offers parking, sea turtle sightings, tropical fish, and night dives over a sandy and rocky bottom following a 35-minute boat ride. El Gavilán Intermediate/Advanced - 70’-100’ This rocky ledge leads into a canyon where groupers and larger fish are often sighted; 35 minutes by boat. Blow Hole Beginners/Advanced - 30’-70’ 35-minutes from San Lucas, or just 10 minutes from Chileno beach, this dive
offers rocky valleys presenting a variety of fish. Las Salinas Beginners - 30’-45’ - A sunken Japanese fishing boat attracts a large assortment of fish at this beginners’ dive; about 80 minutes from Cabo San Lucas or one hour from La Playita. Gordo Banks Advanced - 110’-120’ - A seamount provides views of marlin, hammerheads, skip jacks and at times huge manta rays; one hour from La Playita. Cabo Pulmo Beginner-Advanced - 30’-100’ A one hour drive east of San José or five minutes by boat and you’ll find the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez. SNORKELLING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkelling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock
A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock.
Lover’s Beach This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkelling in the area. This eightfingered coral reef is about a 2-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

PUERTO LOS CABOS The only composite course in the area with two different 9 hole courses designed by two legends of golf, Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman respectively. March through May This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

FLYBOARDING
Have you ever had a dream about flying like Superman or maybe swimming like a dolphin? Dreams can come true in Cabo! The FlyBoard is a device connected and powered by a personal watercraft, which allows propulsion underwater and in the air. Users are connected to the board by wakeboard boots, under which, water pressure provides thrust. A certified trainer controls the power and height and you control all the movement. Available at Medano beach or in the Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo.
KITE SURFING
This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December.
STAND UP PADDLING
There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout and while enjoying nature. At Medano beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board. Tips! • Your feet should be parallel, about hip-width distance apart, centred between the board rails (edges). • Keep toes pointed forward, knees bent and your back straight. Balance with your hips and core. Keep your arms straight and twist from your torso as you paddle, you have more strength in the abdominal muscles than in your arms. Your gaze should be level at the horizon and avoid staring at your feet. • If you’re paddling on the right, your right hand is lower and on the paddle shaft. Your top left hand is on the top of the grip. The elbow (angle) of the paddle faces away from you. • Plant the paddle by pushing the blade all the way under the surface, pull it back to your ankle, then out of the water. To go in a reasonably straight line, paddle about 4 or 5 strokes on one side, then switch to the other. When you switch sides, you’ll reverse hand positions. • When you fall aim yourself to the side so you don’t fall the board.
SKATEBOARDING
Visit the Pescadero Skate Park located on km. 64 of HWY 19, in the town of El Pescadero. The park is surrounded by lush gardens. Donations are appreciated for park maintenence.

ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES
Los Cabos is an ideal destination for families with children of all ages. Ask your concierge to help you book any of these activities. Blown Glass Factory Don’t miss this factory located in Cabo San Lucas where youngsters can watch the highly-skilled artisans perform the art of glass-blowing. Adults can shop for that one (or probably more than one) perfect piece to take home. Make sure you visit the factory before 2:00 pm in order to catch the show. Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks and eco-adventure companies in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, back-country ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared
to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Ask your concierge to set-up your adventure. Swim with Dolphins Los Cabos has a few facilities where you and your kids can swim with trained dolphins. By visiting one of the dolphin centres you and your kids will experience a one-on-one connection that will be memorable. You will learn special hand signals and ways to communicate positive reinforcement to the dolphins. Wet Fun Water Park Located about 20 minutes from San José, this water park has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms, a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps
water on the bystanders bellow. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at km 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures
make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends. Horse-back lessons at Cuadra San Francisco This world class equestrian centre was established in 1994 by Francisco J. Barrena M. and is home to about 50 horses. Each one has been trained by professionals to ensure safety and an enjoyable ride. The riding school’s speciality is high level dressage, which is an excellent way to perfect any riding discipline. The staff can accommodate riders of any age and skill level. Cuadra San Francisco is located at km. 19.5 of the main highway between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.
ADVENTURE
Los Cabos offers a number of entertainment options for adventure seekers. From guided bicycle tours to a sunset horseback ride on the beach or a highspeed zipline across one of the many local canyons, pick an adventure that is right for you and get out there!
The Sling Swinger at Wild Canyon - Photo courtesy Wild Canyon
Buggy, Atv, Or Bike Rentals There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid drivers’ license. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike, beach cruiser, or joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Just make sure to wear a helmet! Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something
for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Cactuslovers may also want to check out the nearby cactus gardens Wirikuta, offering a large variety of cacti laid out in an artful outdoor setting. Parasailing, Bungee Jumping, and Ziplines Get ready to shout “Geronimo!” as you leap off a platform in one of the most extreme outings! Several local adventure-parks provide bungee jumping packages and high speed zipline canopy tours are offered in a number of local canyons. If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat!

LOS CABOS 101
Imagine floating in a turquoise bay with pink sand or riding some epic waves: every Baja beach offers something unique. Here is a list of the must-see beaches -- visit them all to decide which one is your dream beach!
Cabo San Lucas
Along the Corridor
If you’re looking for the action, here it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and family-friendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see.
LAS VIUDAS
José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Santa Maria provides no services and hardly any shade. You can rent umbrellas on the beach, but if you happen to have one, bring it anyway. Snorkelling gear will help you get the most of this beautiful beach!
Location:
San Jose del Cabo
MEDANO BEACH
Las Viudas (The Widows) beach is not visible from the road and is possibly the most private beach you will find on this list. What makes it unique are the rock formations which create small pools and coves where you can have a private and peaceful beach day. This beach is swimmable with caution but if you find your own pool you can avoid the waves. Turn right at Km. 12.5 of the corridor and follow the dirt road down to the beach. There is a sign that reads “Las Viudas” but slow down and keep your eyes peeled; the entrance may sneak up on you. You won’t find any services or vendors so bring all your beach essentials with you.
Tips:
CHILENO
Chileno is a very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newly-installed palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. This is the only beach with public restrooms and it has plenty of palapas for shade. Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. If you visit Chileno on a weekend, make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and, if you beat the crowds, you’ll be guaranteed a palapa to yourself for much-needed shade. Bring snorkelling gear!
Tips:
PALMILLA
Palmilla beach is known for its family-friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis.
Location: Location:
In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. This is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador.
Tips:
Be prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No, gracias.” Prices don’t vary much from one water sports rental place to another. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.
LOVER’S BEACH
Getting there is an adventure in itself, due to the fact that it is reachable only by boat or kayak. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Prices are around $15.00 USD per person. Ask your captain to cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive, you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so swim on Lover’s Beach only. Land’s End beside the famous arch. This beach is accessible only by boat. There are a couple of vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services. A good idea is to spend the day at Medano Beach and take an hour or two to go to Lover’s Beach; this should be time enough to explore this natural wonderland.

SANTA MARIA
Santa Maria offers a stunning horseshoe cove with coralcoloured sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. Travelling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San

the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.
Tips:
COSTA AZUL
If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot you can find it here without driving out of town. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where the Cabo Surf Hotel and Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and stand-up paddle boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer, and in the winter this is a good spot for snorkelling and swimming. Exit at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge. Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers.

LOS CABOS 101 LA PLAYITA
La Playita (the little beach) is a long stretch of beach where you will often find locals fishing from the shore and families with children enjoying the beach-front playground. On the right end of La Playita you can find a roped-off swimming area just outside the entrance to the beautiful Puerto Los Cabos 500-slip marina. To the left is the natural open beach where you can swim, skim-board and enjoy a peaceful beach day away from the crowds. Follow the signs to La Playita/ Puerto Los Cabos from Boulevard Mijares in downtown San José del Cabo (across from the fire department). You will find new and well-maintained bathrooms, palapas and fishing charters. There are no food services directly on the beach, but several casual restaurants dot the surrounding area.

On the Pacific CERRITOS
Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day on the beach or, if you want to be active, you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop.
Location: This bay lies about 30 minutes
from the boardwalk in La Paz. Simply follow the main drag along the boardwalk, then through Costa Baja Golf Course and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed. There are palapas, but not many. Kayaks and snorkel gear are offered.

ISLA CORONADO
A wildlife reserve where visitors may anchor, snorkel, scuba and camp lies on this island. The panga ride usually includes a cruise around the island where it’s very common to see sea lions, seals and even sea otters. The only swimmable beach on the island has pristine white sand and shallow crystal clear turquoise water, which creates ideal snorkelling conditions. Coronado Island is the ideal place for an adventure or to simply immerse yourself in nature and relax.

Location:
Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area. Tips: Lounge chairs, restrooms, food and drinks are available at The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant.
About 7 miles or 30 minutes northeast of Loreto by boat. To get to Coronado Island you must take a boat or a panga. You will find pangas in Loreto’s Marina which you can hire. The best option is to ask your concierge to arrange this for you. There are no services or restaurants on the beach, but there are several large palapas with tables and benches and an eco-restroom. Bring hiking shoes if you plan to explore the area. Snorkelling gear is a plus!
La Paz
BALANDRA
Balandra is a stunning bay that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist-high, crystal clear water with shades of turquoise blue. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock” as well as other interesting rock formations. Pictures just don’t do it justice. You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra!

LOS CABOS 101
USEFUL INFORMATION Exchange rates - Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will get your change in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate.
Cash or Card? - Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only places. Always ask beforehand and carry cash. Your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.
How do you say?
ATMs - The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate) with reasonable fees. Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the street will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees. Buying groceries - In Cabo San Lucas, Wal-Mart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Wal-Mart and Mega. If you just need to grab something quickly, OXXO stores are small, reasonably priced convenient stores located all over town.
Driving - Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. ALTO STOP

“ Sur f in g Sur f in g Sur f in g , o k ay sh o p p in g to o ” is how Anastasia Ashley describes her interests. A relevant career through out time, the ability to surf big and small waves, and social influence are her favorite qualities in a surfer. She is a professional model, a vegetarian, and she has been surfing since the age of 5. At the age of 6, she won a surf contest using a run-down board that she found in a trash can outside of her house, and by the age of 7, a sponsor replaced her run-down board with new ones, and a life of competition started. In 2003, she received the Triple Crown Rookie of the Year award and at the age of 16, Ashley won her first major national title. Later, she also won titles including two National Scholastic Surfing Association championships, the Professional Surfing Tour of America championship, and the 2010 Pipeline Women’s Pro in Hawaii. As of May 20th, 2015, Ashley is ranked 108th in the 2015 Women’s Qualification Series, with 1 heat win and an average heat score of 10.01. In the world of Surfing, Anastasia Ashley is a rookie, she is only 28 years old. People say her personality is brilliant, free-spirited and eccentric, gifted with an analytical mind, she tends to be ahead of her time, and if you ever feel she has a difficult time staying in the present, it is only because she would rather focus on the future. Social, charming, and friendly, her outgoing personality makes her popular. Freedom and space are obviously important to her, and for Anastasia friendship is where everything long lasting starts. Charismatic, and usually the leader of any group she is in, Anastasia has been one of the most visible girls in a sport dominated by men. You can tell she is an Aquarius, because she thrives to not do the average thing that every other surfer has done before, and desires to be the first one to do something completely different. A surf champion, Anastasia Ashley is all about living a clean life, staying positive and trying to do your best in anything you do in life, she will tell you that being a surfer teaches you how to be determined and focused. Surf, surf, surf, and shopping??? Anastasia loves clothes and reading fashion magazines. She has found a calling in modeling, one of the other things she is good at besides surfing. We congratulate her for her recent launch of Gypsy Jet Set, her own jewerly line in collaboration with OK1984. A style that she defines as “beach glam”. She has said before that her ultimate goal -- if she was doing fashion -- would be to be making the cutest clothes at the lowest price you can do it for. Since we believe she is the kind of girl that reaches her goals with success, can we suggest organic cotton and hemp? Beach glam, we like! Until then, you can catch Anastasia jet skiing for Sports Illustrated Swim Daily or better yet, here in Cabo, at the Los Cabos Open Surf, from June 9th to the 14th! Curious about Anastasia? So were we! We asked her a few questions to get to know her better:
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT VISITING BAJA?
I love the food and energy of BAJA, nothing can beat the locals who are so friendly, and the waves!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BREAK IN LOS CABOS?
I love Zippers because its a rippable point break and it's also always fun. Another favorite of mine to surf is Monuments.
WHICH IS THE SCARIEST WAVE YOU’VE EVER RIDDEN?
Probably anywhere on the north shore of Oahu, either Waimea or Phantoms.
BETHANY HAMILTON JUST CHARGED TEAHUPOʻO ON A HEAVY DAY. HOW DO YOU SEE BIG WAVE SURFING FOR WOMEN IN THE FUTURE?
She is really inspiring with everything she’s accomplished in big waves, I think big wave surfing would be great with more sponsors and attention going to the sport of female athletes. I think its a great thing in the past few years that women have really been able to push the envelope when it comes to bigger waves.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE SURFER, AND WHY?
Kelly slater because he has been the most relevant surfer of the last 20 years, he can surf big and small waves and he's also been very socially relevant.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ABOUT THIS YEAR’S LOS CABOS OPEN OF SURF?
I think definitely seeing Donavon Frankenreiter, and all the best women in the world coming to shred Cabo!
To preserve Uli Torre's true message we have included the original interview in Spanish, Uli's native language, as well as the translation into English.

Tell us about Boardwalk Productions and its involvement in Los Cabos Open of Surf. Boardwalk is a private company specializing in the organization and promotion of sports events and entertainment. The Los Cabos Open of Surf is an event owned by Boardwalk Productions, sanctioned by the World Surf League and sponsored by Fiturca and private brands. As proprietors of the Los Cabos Open of Surfing, we are fully responsible for the production, design, promotion and global positioning strategies.
This June, Los Cabos will be hosting another year of the Los Cabos Open of Surf, an event that is anticipated with excitement, both locally and internationally. Uli Torre, co-creator of the LCOS, tells Destino Magazine readers about the inspiration and hard work behind the event, as well as the exciting things taking place this year. SURF'S UP!
How did the idea of the Los Cabos Open of Surf come up? Surfing is a very attractive and desired lifestyle. We watched other events that combined surfing with live music in other parts of the world, mainly in California and Australia, which made us think that it was a great opportunity to bring this type of festival to Mexico. We began in Mazatlรกn by requesting a license from the Association of Surfing Professionals, now the World Surf League, and held our first event in Mazatlรกn in 2011, with great success. Our inspiration is to make the Los Cabos Open of Surf one of the most special festivals of its kind. We then thought about Los Cabos, a world-renowned destination and with good waves where the task wasn't easy. We met with the tourism authorities of Los Cabos in 2012 and our proposal ech-
oed thanks to the vision of business leaders such as Ernesto Coppel and the Secretary of Tourism Ruben Reachi. The project was thoroughly examined by members of the Fiturca committee and was then approved. And now here we are, with our third edition. What is the intention behind the event? The intention behind the event is simple: To promote the destination of Los Cabos through surfing and the appealing lifestyle. Today, surfers are personalities whose recognition goes beyond the sea and the waves. They are athletes with great presence in social media and linking surfing to Los Cabos has given the destination an invaluable exposure. Is there anything special we can expect for this year? This year we faced many challenges. The devastation of Hurricane Odile left us with fewer resources, however, due to the willingness of the Board of Tourism and the consistency that the event has generated in its two editions, we managed to follow through with the event. Donavon Frankenreiter, a musician and surfer with great international recognition, will be performing for the first time in Mexico on the evening of Friday, June 12. For the first time this year we will have worldwide premier of a surf film. In the coming years, we
want to dabble with a specialized surf film festival during the event. Who are the competitors expected for this year? We have confirmation from Coco Ho, who was the champion last year and comes to defend his title. Alana Blanchard is also a celebrity who is beyond the world of surfing. We can also expect Hawaiian Malia Manuel, one of the best in the world and Laura Enever from Australia. Can you tell us about the QS 6000 Women's & Jr. Pro Event, as well as any other competitions that will be taking place? We're very excited to have the world's best surfers under 18 years old competing in Los Cabos Open of Surf. The addition of the JR PRO will give viewers a fresh look for the future of surfing, and is the perfect complement to the QS 6000 Women's, an event that will highlight the best women surfers in the world in a wave that is perfect for spectacular manoeuvres. The Los Cabos Open of Surf became a favourite stop of the women's tour since its first edition. This year the event will run at full capacity, with more than 90 female athletes from around the world. Will we be witnesses again to the only Women's ASP 6 Star event in Mexico? Yes, not only in Mexico, but also in all Latin America. What are some of your favourite moments from past years? There are many enjoyable and memorable moments. Working so many days and hours with your team to achieve your goals is very satisfying; you reach a climax where you think that everything was worth it: when you're on stage realizing that the event gathered around four thousand people at the concert; when you're on the podium alongside award winning athletes… these are the moments when you know it was worth it. Is there anything else you want to add? I would like to thank the media, Fiturca, the municipal authorities and our sponsors for their support. We look forward to seeing all Destino Magazine readers at Costa Azul beach from June 9 through the 14.

Outside the lines
Oil Painting with a Surf World Champion by Adrienne Davis
I was running at this point because the sandy road was burning the soles of my feet, and while I actually love the feeling of searing dirt or sand, this was just a tad too hot. I was quite used to the feeling, as I was always barefoot – my mom finally gave up trying to keep shoes on my feet as I silently protested by losing many pairs of shoes, ‘accidentally’ removing them at restaurants or at the beach, and forgetting where I left them… or that I had them on at all to begin with. I was on my way down to the beach; it was a hot spring day after school. Homework was completed, afternoon snack was done, and I was excitedly running to the beach with my sister and the pups to get a surf in before dark. Our love for the ocean and for surfing came from our dad, and as kids growing up, we were so incredibly fortunate to have a world-class surf break as our extended back yard. Our neighbour and family friend was the legendary waterman, Mike Doyle. When our family became close friends with Doyle, his primary focus at the time and newfound love was art. He was a painter - colourful and bold. But first and foremost, he was still one of the world’s greatest watermen. It was the balance of these two that drove him, his passions. When I was in middle school, we had an assignment in art class to do an oil painting. I was close to terrible at all painting, especially oil, but I wanted so badly to turn out a beautiful piece. I was lucky enough to be able to enlist the help of our friend, Mike Doyle. He had some incredibly cool techniques for creating the illusion of an oil painting using acrylic paint. Mike treated the canvas first with some sort of thick white paint to create texture – this was the trick to mimicking the texture often seen with oil. Afterwards, we painted the background – I think I had taken a clipping from a magazine of the vase of flowers, and we played around with brighter colours, giving it a touch of our own. From there, once Mike got me started, he just let me go with it; he kept himself busy around his studio, just popping over every so often with advice on blending and highlighting – add a little white here, and some turquoise down here. I remember Mike really liking the streak of blue that I painted across the bottom of the piece. I think I left it at his studio to dry, and he may have added some final touches. So, while we kind of ‘thought outside the box’ (cheated?), we did turn out a beautiful painting, to the point where the teacher believed the painting was oil. However, she also scored my piece accordingly, claiming that I had not done the painting on my own (it was too good), and therefore she could not award me the A+ the painted merited. The grade was worth the experience in the end, and I probably learned more from my one painting session with Doyle than I did in the entire course at school. Mike Doyle taught me to be relaxed and free, to be bright and colourful, and to paint outside the lines. * Curious about Mike Doyle’s art? Look for Desierto Verde art gallery.

Mexican Food and Wine The next Generation by Chef Tadd Chapman
It's been a long time since I first arrived in Mexico, since my first taste of Mexican culture and cuisine, and even longer since my first “tequila” experience (we’ll leave that story for another day). When I first arrived to Los Cabos, as with many visitors my preengrained picture of Mexico was that of tequila and tacos; never did I think of incredible gastronomy and fine wines! Even with a lot left to learn, after 17 years living in Mexico my perspective has changed dramatically! I have learned a lot about Mexican cuisine during this time, through colleagues, good old trial and error, and expanding my knowledge of Mexican ingredients. Mexico has one of the greatest culinary cultures in the world! Regional cuisines focused on age-old traditions and locally-sourced ingredients have left Mexico with an incredibly diverse cuisine. The world growing smaller and transporting goods from one area to another more easily has made all of these great traditions available here in Los Cabos and around the world. This availability, coupled with a market blessed with numerous talented chefs, both Mexican and foreign, have created a haven for foodies and gastro-tourism in general. Looking back, the variety and quality of Mexican wine was just as limited as my knowledge 17 years ago. Oh, how times have changed! The Mexican wine industry has seen incredible growth both in variety and quality over the last 5-10 years, mostly from Baja California Norte, where about 90% of Mexican wine is produced. For the last couple of years, it would seem that a month has not passed in which I have not discovered a new wine or new wine maker! This, coupled with the aforementioned gastronomy has created the perfect storm for food and wine experiences. Wine pairing dinners have been occurring more and more frequently in the past few years, and if you have not seized the opportunity to experience one, you are truly missing out. I have been blessed to participate in a number of these dinners both under my direction and the direction of others, and I leave each new experience feeling extremely fulfilled. Of course, one might argue that I’m a chef and therefore should be interested in this concept; a justified argument, but one doesn’t have to be a chef to enjoy food, nor a sommelier to enjoy wine, and neither to enjoy these experiences. All you need is a zest for something new, something different! Of course, this experience is not for everyone, and our gastro-community offers many experiences at different levels for foodies and wine aficionados. From the exclusive Men and Wine (Ventanas al Paraiso) or Wine Wars (Don Sanchez Restaurant) to simpler wine (and beer) pairing dinners, there are lots of options to choose from for each preference and budget. So get out of the house, experience a new Mexican tradition with great food and Mexican wines!! Buen provecho. * Tadd Chapman is Cabo celebrity and awarded Chef, owner of Tadd Champman Restaurants® Don Sánchez / Habaneros / Retro Burger Bar.

ART DISTRICT MAP AND GALLERIES:
Sustainable Surf - Co-founders Michael Stewart and Kevin Whilden’s goal is to influence surf culture and the surf industry to protect oceans globally with the “Ecoboard Project.” By creating a standard for sustainable surfboards, manufacturers and pro surfers are beginning to embrace more environmentally sound boards. Through its Deep Blue Life program, surfers also learn ocean-friendly practices, and its Waste to Waves program recycles Styrofoam into new surfboards and other products. Pro surfers Greg Long and Alex Gray are working with Sustainable Surf to raise environmental awareness in the surf industry and encourage surfers to adopt a “greener” lifestyle. Surf industry sponsors are buying on, too: Vans, Volcom, Reef and Quiksilver are supporters. www.sustainablesurf.org Surfers Without Borders (SWoBs) Dedicated to creating projects that teach environmental awareness, reduce ocean pollution and promote sustainable development, SWoBs encourages healthy relationships between surfers and coastal communities worldwide. Now developing sustainable surf camps and permaculture surf retreats, SWoBs is looking to partner with existing and new camps to benefit their local communities. By creating “Demonstration Sites,” SWoBs intends to show sustainable alternatives and encourage innovation for simple long-lasting solutions. www.surferswithoutborders.org Waves For Water (W4W) – Working worldwide on the front lines delivering water purification filters, W4W crushes bureaucracy through “guerrilla humanitari-
anism.” With support from Hurley International, W4W’s Clean Water Couriers is a volunteer program that encourages surfers to carry and distribute water purification filters when surfing third-world countries. (Anyone who travels may volunteer.) Founded by former pro surfer Jon Rose, since 2009, W4W has assisted in disaster relief efforts worldwide and distributed over 100,000 filters. On the ground in Los Cabos just a week after Hurricane Odile made landfall in September 2014, and in Nepal soon after the devastating quake in April of this year, dynamic W4W walks its talk. www.wavesforwater.org Surfers Healing – After discovering the calming effect surfing had on Isaiah, his young autistic son, former pro surfer Israel “Izzy” Paskowitz and wife Danielle created Surfers Healing to allow other special needs youth to experience its benefits. For 16 years, the Paskowitzes have offered free year-round day camps in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada and here in Los Cabos, Mexico. Annually, the volunteer-staffed camps give over 4,500 individuals and their families a fun day at the beach while providing a unique type of sensory integration that calms and instills confidence. Through Surfers Healing’s camps, the Paskowitzes hope it will foster a greater understanding and acceptance of those with Autism Spectrum Disorder. www.surfershealing.org. * Photography by Daniela Fernández. HEALTHY LIVING

Yoga
The hazards of competition
by yoga instructor Bryan Kest Founder of PowerYoga®
Life is transient. Be happy. Awareness and equanimity are at the core of a healthy mind. But without a healthy body, we are mindless. Why? When we lack health, our attention is inevitably focused on the ache we are experiencing, and it becomes difficult to remember how to breathe. Spiritual tradition has evolved by understanding that suffering is the way we learn, though it might not necessarily be the healthiest way of living, pain is a clear sign that something needs to change. To learn how to observe our sensations without reacting to our feelings, without judgement or expectation, is to clear a path to liberate ourselves from suffering. Conscious eating habits, body movement, and quiet time in Nature are essential to nurture the healthiest state of the body which, as a consequence, nurtures the healthiest state of the mind. A healthy mind is a clear mind, a pure mind, a mind free of negativity. It is the magical power of our own free will to choose our experiences for what they give us to succeed in the quest for a healthier life. What is a healthier life? We like to think that a healthier life is a different life than the one we live, but the truth is that the one we live is the only life we have to be healthier. A life without pain is the life we all desire: a healthy life, healthy for me, and healthy for others. May your choices bring you happiness. May your choices bring others happiness. May all beings be healthy, happy and peaceful. Breathe freely, here is where it begins -- in Baja.
Yeye 20
To illustrate the personal nature of a real yoga practice, I have two separate stories to share. The first story has to do with a highly regarded body builder who happened to be in my class. He was close to having biceps bigger than his head. As I had the class in downward facing dog, his arms started shaking pretty badly. He seemed perplexed as to why he was so quickly fatiguing, and the girl next to him was holding the posture seemingly easily and comfortably. Finally, he had to come out of the pose as his arms were about to collapse. As he was on his knees resting, he looked totally perplexed as he gazed around the room at everyone else in the pose. What this bodybuilder did not realize was that although he was very strong, possibly stronger than anyone else in the class, his short, tight, overdeveloped muscles were really restricting his range of motion, and he was expending much more energy just to push his joints straight, and therefore fatiguing faster. The other story is about a hyperflexible young woman who attended my class regularly. She was very proud to always be the mot flexible person in the class. This title of most flexible can only be attained by comparing with oneself with others, so obviously her deeper understanding of yoga practice was missing. One day in class we were doing a seated forward bend. As this girl was looking around the room she noticed the person next to her looked like they were able to go further in the pose than she. Although she could easily touch her head to her legs in the pose, the person next to her actually had their forehead resting on their big toes. This looked much deeper. At this point the proud, flexible girl started desperately trying to get her head to her feet; but she couldn’t, and you could read the frustration all over her face. What her competitive,
distracted mind failed to realize was that she actually might have been more flexible than this person next to her, who looked as if she were going deeper in the pose. It was simply that this person had short legs and a long torso, which made touching her head to her feet easier. She, on the other hand, had long legs and a short torso; she was never going to do it (without serious injury), even though she may have been the more flexible of the two. The point of these stories is to emphasize how the shape of our body has a major effect on how we look in these postures, and no two people on the planet (not even identical twins) have the same shape, let alone the same diet, emotions, genetic linevvvage, injuries, etc. Understanding this helps one begin to see the absurdity of comparing and competing with others. Comparing and competing does not extend beyond our self. We compare and compete with some image or ideal we have in our mind, maybe with past accomplishments or future goals. Maybe we are living out some program implanted in our mind by our family, friends, society, coaches, teachers, or media. We are incessantly told in every way how we should look, how we should act and what we should accomplish, while all of this could possibly be the perpetuation of a great disease or imbalance, a great emptiness that we are trying to fill with outer accomplishments at the detriment to our true health, relationships and environment. If we do accomplish our goals or ideals, certainly there may be some satisfaction, but usually it is not long at all before it turns into wanting something else, and the cycle begins again. If we don’t accomplish this goal or the goal of our program, well that could perpetuate stress, leading to anger and on to depression and desperation. The only way to judge your progress in yoga is in how little you judge your progress in yoga, or maybe judge anything.
Fitness
Surfing basics, such as how
to swim out, stand up, keep your balance, and not wipe out while enjoying your first surf experience are essentially all you need for the adventure. How you apply them in real time will be what surfing is all about, a discovery of the Self through Nature. - Hop on your board, in paddling position. - Center your body (Imagine a middle line dividing your board vertically through the centre; this line should go through the centre of your body.) - Your toes are always touching the back (the sweet spot). - Once a big wave comes, and you paddle yourself into it, you pop up in four steps: 1. Put your hands right next to your chest, palms down. 2. Push up, going back to your knees. 3. Put your front food forward, and activate your back foot to stand up on your board. (The imaginary middle line dividing your board vertically through the centre should ideally be under the arches of your feet.) 4. Bend your knees, arms out (the ‘surfer dude’ look) and shoot the waves! An ideal fitness routine for surfing is rooted in balancing exercises. You can intuitively choose ways to practice balancing your body every time you exercise; the lesson to understand is that to achieve balance, you need an equanimous mind, free of selfjudgement and expectation. All balancing exercises have a clear focused mind at the core of the practice and only one fundamental instruction: breathe free. As a rule, if you are not breathing, you have lost your balance. Surfing is an experience that will change your perception of life in ways that you will never forget.

ECO-Friendly Sustainable SURF
Organic
A surfer’s healthy snack Ingredients: Dates, desiccated coconut, almonds. Method: 1. Place the coconut and the dates into a blender or food processor. 2. Process on high speed for 3-4 minutes, pausing to scrape down sides as needed. 3. Remove from processor and roll teaspoon-sized balls. 4. Insert an almond or two in each ball. 5. Roll in remaining coconut.
Eco boards, sustainable surf camps, and permaculture surf retreats are the new wave in sustainable design. They intend to create ocean-friendly practices and reduce environmental impacts to the global sport of surfing. Sea level rise, ocean acidification, and the loss of the world’s living coral reefs are an important focus on which to place our awareness if we want to protect our oceans, waves, and beaches. To be vigilant against unconscious development, legal access, and pollution has become part of the champion surfer’s profile. The threats to the surfing habitat are now growing exponentially due to the impacts of man-made climate change. What is the surfing habitat? The surfing habitat includes waves, clean oceans, marine critters (fish, seals, whales, sea birds), coral reefs, ecosystem flora and fauna (plankton, kelp), and watersheds on land. What are the direct human impacts on the surfing habitat? Over-fishing, urban pollution (sewage, urban runoff, industrial discharge), plastic trash, coastal development, oil spills, and watershed land-use change all directly affect the surfing habitat. What are the global threats to surfing habitat? The following are global threats to the surfing habitat: Sea level rise - otherwise known as “permanent high tide” at every surf break; Ocean acidification - atmospheric CO2 levels increasing as a direct result of human fossil fuel consumption and forest clearing; Ocean warming - The oceans are the primary heat sink for the planet, and have absorbed roughly 90% of the recent heating of the Earth. The solution All environmental issues facing the world today are the result of poor design. It is possible to grow food without toxic chemicals, and to provide clean drinking water inexpensively. We can utilize waste as a resource. We can ride an eco board. We can be eco-friendly. To learn environmental awareness visit www. surferswithoutborders.org
The health benefits of dates have made them one of the best ingredients available for muscle development. Dates are rich in several vitamins, minerals and fibre, and are one of the very best sweet and versatile foods that can regulate the digestive process. When the body begins to absorb the high nutritional value of the dates, feelings of hunger are satisfied. Also, the nervous system can benefit from consuming dates, since they have such significant amounts of potassium. They can significantly boost energy levels in people within half an hour of consuming them. Anti-inflammatory, good for your brain, heart, bones and immune system, almonds are known to have great medicinal value. The presence of manganese, copper and riboflavin in almonds helps in energy production and boosts metabolic rate. A handful of almonds can get you through the day without filling you up with calories or fat, while boosting your energy. Coconut is considered as one of the wonder trees known to man. One of the names of coconut in Sanskrit is Kalpa-Vriksha meaning an “eternal tree” or “tree which fulfils all wishes”. The water and flesh supply us with essential nutrients that can keep our stomachs full and give us energy to increase endurance.

baja's unknown treasures
NEW FLIGHTS TO LORETO As of April 15, 2015, WestJet will offer weekly non-stop service from Calgary International Airport (YYC) to Loreto (LTO).
Scorpion Bay, located in the small town of San Juanico, is popular for its minute-long ride and is known to have some of the best surf in all of Mexico. This town is still a typical sleepy fishing village of Baja, but when the south swells arrive, surfers flock from all over Baja and California. There are only a couple of small hotels in San Juanico, and camping on the bay is very popular. The Scorpion Bay Cantina is the most popular campsite and restaurant; it’s right on the point and provides restrooms, showers and wireless Internet access. There are a few restaurants and grocery stores in town but no banks, so it is recommended to bring pesos. The closest airport is in Loreto (LTO), which receives flights from LAX and Canada. San Juanico is northwest from Loreto; the drive is easy and the road is in good conditions.
Scorpion Bay has four main points that break to the right. What makes the surf break so unique is the way the points face to the southeast, allowing it to only pick up south swells. Overall the bottom is sandy, but the third and fourth points have numerous lava rocks. This allows for steady offshore winds to perfectly shape the waves and generate the famous rides that can last well over a minute. The ride is so long that surfers are often picked up by ATVs that return them to the start. Because each point is so unique, you can find waves for any surfing level. The first point is a perfect spot for beginners because it provides the shortest, smallest, and slowest waves. The second point is the most consistent wave, and therefore the most popular. This is the wave that most Scorpion Bay goers travel for. The third point is for more advanced levels because it can get fast and hollow. When the swell is big enough, it has been said that the third and second points connect, creating a ride of 3 minutes long. It sounds like a wave that surfers would dream about, doesn't it? * Photos: dblanco Photography

ENTERTAINMENT
EVENTS JUNE 2015 By Fernando Rodriguez
June 1st Día de la Marina (Mexican Navy Day)
In comparison to the United States, Mexico's Navy Day is very similar to the pageantry and pride of the Armed Forces celebration and remembrance that is observed annually on Memorial Day. Naval parades and fireworks highlight the national civil holiday that is dedicated to the June 1, 1917 occasion when Captain Don Rafael H. Izaguirre Castanyares led an exclusively native-born crew of Mexicans aboard the ship "Tabasco" from the port of Veracruz. June 1st is a national Mexican government holiday that is observed throughout the Republic, but is limited in that employees are not entitled to a day off with pay. The holiday is a date that reaffirms the commitment to enhance coordination and cooperation between the government institutions of the Republic, for a peace time accord in Mexico that benefits all of its citizens. While recognized throughout the country, Mexico's Navy Day is especially celebrated in port cities and towns like Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, Loreto and the Southern Baja California Peninsula. Part of the festivities include a show of the Navy vessels fleet, helicopters, volleyball beach tournaments, fishing competitions, gallant Naval ceremonies, parades of serious and dignified Navy men and women, carnival rides, and of course, the much anticipated fireworks show. Mexico's Navy Day and its festivities have been known to last at least three days.
June 9 - 14 Los Cabos Surf Open
This very popular multi-day surf festival, held at Zippers, Costa Azul, in San José del Cabo, is one of the biggest events of its kind. The Surf Open brings together some of the world's best surfers in a competition that also features live music on the beach, which makes for a thrilling, fun-filled few days. Surfing professionals from Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Hawaii, Chile, France, England, Japan, Portugal, New Zealand, and Peru were in attendance last year, competing through elimination rounds of 23 heats that included over 143 athletes from 16 countries. Last year's 2014 winners were 19-year old Matt Banting of Australia and 23-year old Coco Ho of Hawaii, who surfed to victory on the continuous four-to-six foot waves at Zippers. "It’s a long year to go, but to get two 6-Star wins feels amazing," Banting explained to worldsurfleague.com after his big win. "We had amazing waves and I’ve had some fun heats." Coco Ho, was last year's top female seed and was a standout throughout the event. The Hawaiian topped Australian and fellow competitor, 22 year old Dimity Stoyle of Australia. Ho, the current No. 10-ranked female of the Women’s WCT, has had a series of highs and lows throughout her 2014 campaign. Second place finisher Brianna Cope mentioned last year that, "This has been an amazing week. Thanks to everyone for putting this event together, and my sponsors for the support."
June 4-7 The 47th Annual Bud Light SCORE Baja 500
The 47th Anniversary of the Tecate SCORE Baja 500, which begins round three of the World Desert Championships with its off-road 500 mile race adventure, will start and finish in Ensenada, after a straight,one-loop turnaround at the Northern border desert city of Tecate, from June 4th to June 7th. The Tecate SCORE Baja 500 race will be internationally televised by CBS Sports. The world-famous event is an elapsed-time race with staggered starts as the green flag on Saturday (June 6) will drop first for the motorcycles and quads at 5:30 a.m. and approximately 10 a.m. for the cars, trucks and UTVs. Nearly 250 entries are expected at the start line, with entries from 25 U.S. States and 10 countries anticipated. The Baja 500 is part of a Mexico west coast race series that includes the Baja 1,000, San Felipe 250, and the Primm 300. Stock VW's, as well as small and large motorcycles, join the array of off-road vehicles that include production cars, buggies, trucks, and custom-fabricated vehicles that battle the dusty terrain and each other to lay claim to cash prizes and the victory stand in this nearly half-century-old off-road racing competition. Most of the world's best desert racers will be on hand for the popular annual Baja California race, which began on July 26, in 1974. Some of the first to cross the finish will do so in about 9 hours, with the rest of the field arriving anywhere from 10-12 hours later. For more information please go to www.score-international.com.

June 20-21 Coyote 300
The Coyote 300 is one of five races that are taking place this year in La Paz. In its 20th year, the Coyote 300 is a Southern Baja California-endorsed race which Bareño Juan Raul Quiroz, President of the Club Coyote, said "We are clubs that organize races like the Dos Mares and the Coyote 300 that draw little attention from the teams' competition, and that is what motivates us to this project." This year's added participation of the Sur California Motorcycle Association, chaired by Alejandro Serrano Vizcaino, hopes to expand the already popular event to more fans who love a good off-road motorcycle category competition that challenges riders, sponsors and their equipment. On twitter, @coyote300 tweeted that while Dos Mares is the biggest and oldest off-road motorcycle race in Baja California Sur,
the Coyote 300 desert race is the one most liked by the participating riders. For more information please follow twitter.com/coyote300.
June 21 Father’s Day
While Father's Day in Mexico is not the Federal Mexican Holiday that Mother's Day is, the day which recognizes dads everywhere is still definitely a national day of observance. It is a day on which, cards, chocolate, artwork, t-shirts and an assortment of other gifts are given to fathers, in much the same tradition that ties and power tools are given to male leaders of the family in the US. What differentiates Father's Day in Mexico from Mother's Day and Dia de los Niños is that it occurs during the June Solstice, which ushers in the start of summer. In Cabo, many schools hold family-oriented potluck gatherings to celebrate Father's Day, while many resorts and restaurants offer Father's Day brunch specials as well dinner-themed discounts to commemorate the event as well.
June 22 Dia de Corpus Christi
The Feast of Corpus Christi, which is Latin for the Body of Christ, is a religious tradition that celebrates the belief in the body and blood of Jesus Christ. The event in Los Cabos features Mexicans attending Catholic Church services to receive communion of wafers, wine or grape juice in honour of the body and blood of Jesus. A procession of church leaders and their congregation, marching through the main square in San Jose del Cabo, has long been the most recognized feature of this local and worldwide celebration.
June 25 - 28 Annual Stars & Stripes Fishing and Golf Tournament
The Stars & Stripes Fishing and Golf Tournament website proudly announced earlier this year that Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee "Red Rocker" Sammy Hagar will headline the event’s famed dinner and music entertainment on Saturday, June 27,

ENTERTAINMENT 2015. The annual charity Stars and Stripes Tournament, which lasts three days, is underway this June 25 and is best known for its benefiting youth charities since 1997. The popular event is a really more of a "fishing, golf, and music festival." This world-class charity fundraiser, held in Cabo San Lucas, "combines spectacular deep sea fishing and golf on Mexico’s finest courses with beautiful accommodations and top-notch musical entertainment," states their website. The hugely popular event has raised and donated more than $20 million to worthy youth charities over the course of its 18-year history. More than just a fundraiser, Stars & Stripes creates lasting memories for the organizations it assists, as well as those participating in the event each year. Real Estate questions asked by you, answered by local real estate expert Blake Harrington, of REmexico Real Estate Group.
Q: What does a Seasonal Market mean for buyers and sellers? A: Summer is now upon us in Los Cabos! Of course this means warmer temperatures, maybe a bit of rain, and for real estate, a bit of a slow market. That doesn’t mean that our market comes to a complete halt. In fact, this summer, we are expecting quite a bit of business. Our advice to buyers is that there are still great deals to be had in the marketplace and getting a deal done in the summer may work strongly to their advantage. Why? Because when our high season returns in October, there may be a recovery underway and those motivated sellers may be less. Sellers are usually a bit more motivated in the summer as they see less tours because of the low season. Summer may be that perfect time to capitalize on a great deal. For sellers, we advise them according to their specific and unique situation. If they are highly motivated to sell their home, we suggest offering bonuses to brokers if they bring a qualified buyer. Another strategy is to do consistent open houses with catering, ice cold drinks and refreshments. This has been successful in creating more interest in a listing during summer. For some sellers, while still interested in selling, they prefer that we withdraw their property from the market and take a few months off before re-listing in the fall. This keeps “Days on Market” down and gives the sellers a chance to make any repairs or cosmetic upgrades that may help the house sell in the high season. With our market showing signs of improvement, we expect a sizzling summer! * Send your Los Cabos real estate questions to: blake@caborealestate.com contact@destinomagazine.com

The beauty of moving to the Baja is that the peninsula has a gift for all of its inhabitants. The gift is unique to each person and there is never an exact delivery date but it is always bestowed. Often, many gifts are received over the length of stay and are meant to teach the recipient more about who they are and why they sought the Baja in the first place. The first gift I received was the ability to walk miles of public beaches and the surplus of readily available fresh fruits, vegetables, and fish. An active lifestyle is important to my family and I have found it directly correlates with our happiness. When living “North of the Border” I found it easy to get caught up in the “noise.” To be so concerned with deadlines and bills and just making it to the weekend that I was forgetting to slow down, check in, and take optimal care of myself. Besides for incredible rental income potential, isn’t that the primary reason to own a Vacation Home in the first place? The Vacation Home buyer of today is living an increasingly fit and socially conscious lifestyle and looking to purchase in areas that offer activities that support this healthy trend. MLS statistics show they are overwhelmingly choosing Los Cabos for the ease of travel access, yearlong sunshine, and huge variety of outdoor pursuits. Between Birding, Golfing, Spear Fishing, Hiking, ATV Riding, Snorkeling, StandUp Paddling, Rock Climbing, Ziplining and World Class Personal Training by Moduvated, there is much to choose from. Whether you are a professional athlete or weekend warrior, rarely will you leave disappointed. The clients that seem to be most particular about their passion and preference for Los Cabos lately have been surfers. With good reason too… Cabo is a year-round Surf destination. Surfing is less of a sport than it is a lifestyle and surf culture has changed dramatically over
the years. The stereotypical “Surfer” as a burntout hippie living out of a van is close to obsolete. Today’s recreational surfers are successful Doctors, Lawyers, CEO’s, and Tech Geniuses that recognize the lifelong benefits of the sport. Some do it for the outdoor exercise, others for the connection to Mother Nature, while many feel a spiritual calling to the rhythm of the waves. Lifetime bonds are formed in the water and surfing has a mystical ability to keep you feeling young beyond your years. In Los Cabos, Surfers are “stoked” with their selection of waves and picturesque beaches to choose from to satiate their adventurous appetite. Throughout the spring and summer the Sea of Cortez provides warm water and consistent swell while the fall and winter is a Pacific side paradise. With so many buyers out in the water, Brokers and Agents often laminate their business cards to network in between sets. Developers have jumped on this trend and have been wise to recognize the growing demands of the surf community. From Todos Santos to San Lucas to San Jose and the East Cape, sustainable homes and condominiums are being built with the water enthusiast in mind. In Cerritos and Pescadero, surf colonies are common where solar panels, recycled water, and low impact building are the norm. After all, surfers believe that connecting with the ocean is their Baja gift and it should be protected to pass along for generations. For the passionate, going from bed to “barrels” in under ten minutes is the ultimate dulce sueño. Los Cabos Coastal Homes with outdoor-showers, secure storage for all the boards, and easy beach access are heavily in-demand features. Designated garages for Dune Buggies and Four Wheel Drives also make a lot of sense for clients that want their ride to the break to be waiting for them as soon as they arrive. Whether it is a beachfront villa or a Smart Eco Home blended into higher elevation for a better vantage point of incoming waves, there are options for all price points. My second and third gifts from the Baja involved eating a mango fresh off the tree and falling in love with a three-week-old abused street puppy that truthfully rescued me. It just goes to show that there is something here for everyone. If you are considering joining us in paradise, the team of REmexico Real Estate Agents are ready to help you find your piece of magic. Before I see you at closing, I’ll see you in the water! Dane Posey is an MLS AMPI REmexico Broker Associate with a passion for all things related to Los Cabos.
